BRADENTON, Fla. – The Pirates this morning made their first major cuts of spring training, paring the roster by 10, including the optioning of shortstop Chase d’Arnaud.

The camp roster is down to 48.

Well Locke’s chance at the #5 spot in the rotation didn’t last long. And sending Chase down so soon says to me that they are turning their focus on who is going to be the back-up SS / middle infielder. (and it ain’t going to be Chase)

  2. tk says:

DK, are you in myth busting mode with the mentioning of a John Lannan trade possibility?

DK: Not following you at all, TK.

  3. LuckyNKentucky says:

Relatively cheap (baseball cheap), opening day starter the last 2 years, maybe a better bet than EJ. (Not AJ).

  4. Drew71 says:

I don’t think Locke’s chances lasted beyond last season’s deer in the headlights audition with PBC. Especially when they have Lincoln who did not look overwhelmed, albeit for only 8 starts. And especially since, unless they lose another to injury, they were battling for the sixth rather than fifth spot; ie, long relief. And seventh spot when Burnett returns.

And while I understand Morton may not be ready, he does not appear to be far. With the days off within the early schedule, the Pirates can go with four starters for about three weeks.

Based on all this, I think Locke was absolutely destined for Indy.

  5. Milo Hamilton says:

Wait a minute. I thought the Pirates franchised Duke Welker.

  6. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

These demotions shouldn’t be any surprise.

I’d rather have Chase get full time playing time than bench time.
