Looking ahead to first pitch …

Game: Pirates (8-14) vs. Philadelphia Phillies, Grapefruit League

Time: 1:05 p.m.

Site: Brighthouse Field, Clearwater, Fla.

Here is the live box score. Rob Biertempfel is tanned.

And here is the Pirates’ lineup …

  1. Alex Presley, LF
  2. Josh Harrison, SS
  3. Jose Tabata, RF
  4. Andrew McCutchen, CF
  5. Casey McGehee, 1B
  6. Yamaico Navarro, 2B
  7. Pedro Alvarez, 3B
  8. Matt Hague, DH
  9. Michael McKenry, C

Reliever Chris Resop will be the Pirates’ starter in Clearwater. Back at Pirate City, Jeff Karstens will pitch in a minor-league game.

  1. According to my TIVO guide, the game will be televised live on MLB Network at noon (central)

  2. Bats, they are sick. I cannot hit curveball. Straightball I hit it very much. Curveball, bats are afraid. I ask Jobu to come, take fear from bats. I offer him cigar, rum. He will come…

  3. Jandy,

In case you don’t go back to the prior thread, the answer to the Juniata question is yes. Most think it’s the college. You’re the first to recognize it. Now I’m intrigued…

  4. @Pedro

Hats for bats. Keep bats warm.

  5. @Pedro and @Milo

Don’t reenact scenes … with Charlie Sheen:

  6. @ Juniata ~ being from the area, I think Juniata the town first…then the college ;)

@Pedro, better throw in some chewin’ tobacco too, or Jobu won’t answer your prayers!

  7. Maybe Cerrano should have considered Allstate to insure his bats.

  8. This comment thread is spectacular.

Keep me updated on the game, boys!

  9. @Pedro – watching last night’s game, straight ball seems to be giving you fits too.

Now… ball on tee, I’m sure you can beat the snot out of.

  10. It’s both unbelievable and wonderful that the Major League baseball season starts for real in less than 24 hours! Even if it is the A’s and M’s.

  11. This is a test of the emergency broadcast system.
No posts showing up on my end since 12:35 pm and it’s now 1:39 pm.

  12. Not much to report unless anyone wants to talk about Pedro’s K with a man on second and 1 out or Resop’s 8 pitches in the first inning to 6 batters. Talk about efficiency. Only one batter saw more than one pitch and he saw three strikes for a K.

  13. Ok. Make that 15 pitches for Resop through 2 innings with three, three pitch Ks. I don’t believe he has thrown a ball yet.

  14. Fillet, thanks for responding…I was wondering if the site was down.
Good for Resop. Happy to see him pitching well.

  15. I always heard that Clint Hurdle was supposed to be a good hitting coach. Here’s my question.

That last strikeout, AGAIN, proved it. He was on plane, on time, and COULDN’T REACH THE BALL!!

A batter should be able to cover the outside corner and HE CAN’T. Someone find a direct line to the dugout and say something. PLEASE!

  16. Something tells me MLB Gamecenter may not be showing everything in the pitch-by-pitch section. Not sure my previous posts are valid pitch numbers.

    Sorry folks.

  17. Fillet_Mimnaw

MLB gamecenter is never right in the spring. They should not even show pitch counts because they just mislead people.

  18. Pedro is up. Top of the fifth. Fouled 1-2 pitch off foot. Not hurt. Base hit. Liner 5th hit of spring

  19. Thr 4.5 innings. Phils 3-0.

  20. The closer is in for Buccos. PA lined a 1-2 fastballl straight down Federal street in the top of 5

  21. Alvarez boots a Polonco grounder with a lot of top spin

  22. Abreu, running for Polonco steals 2d

  23. Now he steals third!

  24. Force Abreu in run down. He was going on contact. 2 outs

  25. Thome grounds out 4-3. Would have been a base hit if Raymond Burr was running, but it was Thome 3-0 Phils through 5

  26. Hanrahan looked good. Not rattled at all by the two steals.

  27. Some nice D after the error

  28. Presley leads off 6 with a very soft flare. 3 hits off Lee

  29. Double play. Sarge uses cliche “Pitchers best friend.”

  30. Tabata up. Pretty blonde sitting above 3 base dugout. Groundout. Inning over. Lee looked very solid today.

  31. 3-0 Phils thru 5.5

  32. Igarashi now pitching for Bucs. Gives up lead off double to Nix

  33. Pedro’s new “walk up” music for the 2012 season, courtesy The King -

  34. Base hit and error by Fox in left lets run score. 4-0 Phils

  35. Double play on line drive to first. Doubled up runner on 2d

  36. Phils going to let Lee hit. Will not pitch in top half. Doubles! Runners now on 2 and 3

  37. Victorino grounds out 3-1. 6 complete. 4-0 Philly bata**s

  38. I see the Bucs have 2 errors. And only 3 hits to Philly’s 9.

  39. Day done for Lee. Kyle Kendrick now pitching for Phil

  40. J in Oshkosh
thanks for the pbp, I came in late.
And thanks for the mention that the mlb season officially starts tomorrow at 6:00 a.m. with A’s vs. M’s in Japan. Can’t believe between the 2 of them, they lost 3 of four to the Japaneese league teams.

  41. Cutch with infield hit. He was smoking down the line and made Abreu pay. What a player

  42. No prob RW DJ Jazzy Jeff will be at Phils opener. No Will Smith per Phil announcers

  43. Navarro hbp on elbow

  44. PR (Singer whoever that is) for Navorro PA is up

  45. Sorry about misspellings

  46. PA looks at strike 3. Very fooled. 2 0uts

  47. Lookin at ‘em again…

  48. PA struck out on 1-2 pitch that came back over the plate. GI Jones up

  49. Pay-dro gets caught loitering at the plate…again

  50. the Legend looks at strike 3. 2 are LOB. Phils have some pitchers! Still 4-0

  51. Wish they had left Hague in…

  52. Hughes in for PBC. Gets a pop up after possible throwing at batter for Navarro (doubt it though)

  53. 1 out hit for Scotty Pods.

  54. So 2K’s and an error for Pete for the second game in a row?

  55. Through 6.5. 4-0 Philly Bastar**

  56. @John

Scotty Pods ? I thought Hawk Harrelson snuck in here for a minute.

  57. Speaking of which, Bastardo is now pitching for Phil

  58. They are almost the hitless wonders again. Looks like a lot of last years issues have resurfaced in 2012.

  59. Milo; I was busy looking for his wife in the stands. Slipped into Hawk mode. Nate is up. Lefty against lefty

  60. McClouth Takes a walk Good as a hit according to JAL stats that he gave me last week

  61. Nate to second. Fox with groundout to first, unassisted

  62. Harrison golfs a pop up to the aforementioned Scotty Pods. He gone!

  63. Nick Evans drives in Nate on 2-1 pitch. 4-1 Phils. Leadoff walk scores again

  64. Woah! That’s two runs!

  65. Well, Osh Kosh B’Gosh, the Bastardo is gone ;)

  66. Fryar doubles. Play at the plate but Abreu’s relay well up the first base line. Evans scores. 4-2 Phils. New pitcher coming up for Phil

  67. Meant Fryer. Damn fast typing. Anybody else as sick of the Kate Upton/Justin Verlander ad as me?

  68. What do they call this, a rally?

  69. McGehee doubles. Now 4-3

  70. Whot is Curt Singer?

  71. rw ~ sumpin like that ;)

  72. Is Kirk Singer old enough to shave. Geez.

  73. Lordie a tie game lol

  74. LMAO Osh Kosh, if he hits, who cares?

  75. Gets a base hit and the kid gets an rbi and we are tied. 4 run 8th for the Good Guys

  76. OK, Kirk, Curt, whatever, he got an RbI, and our regulars have a hard time doing that.

  77. And all this on two outs? Amazing.

  78. PA the rally killer.

  79. Pay-dro caught loitering…again…and again.

  80. Oh a stolen base too. love this.

  81. And PA strikes out looking! 3 K’s

  82. LOL PA killed it.

  83. @John

    “He gone”. LMAO.

  84. Pedro acted like the call was wrong. Big sign of a frustrated hitter. I gotta pick up my kids at school so signing off. I’ll leave the house with the image of Pedro looking at strike 3

  85. Another unknown Chris Johnson pitching, hope he gets 3 k’s.

  86. Thanks John, great stuff.

  87. Ground out to Singer, one out.

  88. Eric Kratz hitting, base hit past first.

  89. This spelling will be wrong, Freddie Galvece hitting.b

  90. Pay-dro or K-dro, can’t decide which one I like better.

  91. Grounder to Harrison, out at first. Kratz moves to second. John Mayberry jr. hits next.

  92. Harrison snares it behind second, thrown out at first. After eight, we are tied at four all.

  93. Papelbon in relief for Phils. He can’t use the dropkick murphy’s music anymore, I wonder what he will choose?

  94. signing off, thanks.

  95. Singer is 29th round draft choice last year, played at State College and didn’t hit much but pretty good defensive player.

  96. Nothing quite like watching one 1st Round pick get k’ed 3 times and another give up the walk-off winner. #stopdraftingnow

  97. Two out homer by a guy who rarely hits home runs, had to be a bad pitch
