700 some folks at the chat today, there’s gotta be more of us to sign in

    Oh yeah, LETS GO PENS

From Apollo 13, Scott Glenn, a Burgh guy was the actor, I think thats his name, “Gentlemen, this is our finest hour”

One of my favorite lines and a first rate movie, and you know what, he was right!

  3. David W. Hannen says:

Chris Harlan, from the trib, in his lead of the game, writes, “Both teams are missing a key defenseman. The injuired Nicklas Grossmann will not play, Flyers coach Peter Laviolette said after his team’s workout. The Penguins will be without Paul Martin, who also missed Game 4.”

I bet DK would not refer to Paul Martin as a “key” defensemen. :)

  4. Eric Bowser says:

    Kunitz – Malkin – Neal
    Sullivan – Crosby – Dupuis
    Cooke – Staal – Kennedy
    Tangradi – Adams

    Orpik – Letang
    Niskanen – Michalek
    Strait – Despres

    Fleury – Johnson

    Scratches: Vitale, Park, Martin
    Suspension: Asham

  5. Eric Bowser says:

Crosby and Malkin to double-shift on the 4th line with Tangradi and Adams.

Score early, score often, and most importantly, stop the puck.

    Let’s go Fleury!

  6. Eric Bowser says:

Oh yeah, no Jeffrey or Lovejoy tonight as well.

  7. Poz says:

I haven’t checked much today. Is it true Rinaldo didn’t even get a phone call? Then the NHL wonders why people think it’s a joke the way they hand out fines and suspensions..

  8. Eric Bowser says:

Poz – I just got home a little bit ago and haven’t read much on it but if no call, it wouldn’t surprise me. NHL is a joke, that includes the players lack of respect for each other, NHLPA’s lack of leadership. Not enough is made of about the NHLPA’s total and complete complicity in this issue.

In fact, NHLPA did a bang up job in November by complaining to NHL about the length of suspensions. League won’t admit it on the record but it happened and once that happened with the owners, GMs and coaches whining, it forced Shanahan to reduce the suspension lengths.

He’s done a bad job with even handing out the short-term ones… like Shea Weber.

  9. Poz says:

Eric – I read some of what Rinaldo said. U r right about lack of respect. He said he did it pretty mcuh cause he was angry.

  10. Poz says:

    Bad turnover – lucky post.

  11. Poz says:

    Do not give up a short-handed chance…please….

  12. Eric Bowser says:

post to cross-bar for Flyers Coburn on first shift, good bounce for Pens.

5:50 into game and going to first PP for Pens and no goals yet.

  13. Eric Bowser says:

PP didn’t move the puck well enough or have Sullivan QB the movement and it showed.

Malkin and Crosby far too often want the same sheet of ice. Players need to learn to share the whole ice.

  14. Eric Bowser says:

    1-0 Flyers

PP goal by Matt Carle with Daniel (flopping) Briere in front

  15. Poz says:

    Flyers PP is deadly…

  16. Eric Bowser says:

Poz – Pens PK is 3rd and 4th liners against 1st and 2nd liners, one more adjustment that I think Bylsma should have done much earlier is getting Crosby, Malkin, and Neal involved on the PK units.

  17. Poz says:

Pens PP looks lethargic – so far. Big save Fleury.

  18. Eric Bowser says:

As I had said on Twitter, get the PP through Sullivan and boom, one-timer!

  19. Poz says:

Little Stevie on some nifty passing as the PP wakes up.

  20. Eric Bowser says:

key to 1-1 is Fleury’s HUGE save

  21. Poz says:

Cross check by flyers not called.

  22. Poz says:

Stupid penalty by Malkin…..can’t have this.

  23. Eric Bowser says:

Malkin has been wreckless on the ice, over doing everything and now just gets sucked into another DUMB penalty against Schenn after whistle.

  24. Poz says:

Agree with Eric. If this was one of the first three games the Flyers would have three goals by now. A few great saves by Fleury – one when the Pens were on the PP.

  25. Poz says:

Geez — cannot take these stupid penalties….

  26. Eric Bowser says:

    Adams to penalty-box for slashing

5on3 PP for Flyers, Briere to Hartnell for easy one-timer, 2-1 Flyers and still PP time for Flyers

  27. Poz says:

Pens fine 5 on 5. But stupid penalites help Flyers build on their impressive PP stats.

  28. Eric Bowser says:

    2-1 Flyers after first period.

Penguins have no one to blame but themselves with bad penalties. You can’t have Malkin taking a post-whistle penalty, or Adams slashing a stick on the PK, or Engelland putting his arm across faces of a flopping Briere.

First PP by Penguins wasn’t good at all, second got going with the puck moving around and Sullivan banged it home with a nice one-timer setup by Letang. When things go through Sullivan on the PP, good things happen.

Wasn’t too pleased with the team defense, too many problems getting the puck out of the zone a few times. Penguins are lucky Fleury stopped two or three point blank shots and two others hit the posts.

Discipline is name of game, if Penguins stay out of the box, play solid team defense, and outwork the Flyers down low, they can work it back to their advantage.

  29. Poz says:

Pens simply cannot take penalties. I’ve never seen a PP score like the Flyers. They pass the puck crisply across the top, get the Pens to sag off, then fire a shot at a screened Fleury who, if the puck happens to hit him, it rebounds out to a Flyer without a Pen in the same area code.

  30. Poz says:

    Great save Fleury.

  31. Eric Bowser says:

    another bad PP by Pens

  32. Poz says:

Sleepy PP for the Pens…nothing generated….far different than the Flyers PP.

  33. Poz says:

Wow! Hear that stat? Pens gave up 33 PP goals all season. But 11 in this series..

  34. Poz says:

Staal with a lazer. Long stretch pass by (Kennedy?).

  35. Eric Bowser says:

If this is the last we are seeing of Jordan Staal, he’s earned his money for this team.

  36. Eric Bowser says:

Hartnell knocks Dupuis from side/behind and no penalty… this is how games deteriorate into out of hand messes. What a garage league.

  37. Poz says:

Don’t say that Eric! And I know this is blasphemy, and I know he is so talented he can take a game over in a snap, but I’d like to see a bit more focus and energy out of Malkin. Gosh, play with Crosby’s energy….

  38. Poz says:

Pens pressure from the top line.

  39. Eric Bowser says:

Malkin has got to score on that backhander…

  40. Michael says:

Watched the Bradenton Marauders tonight with a start by G Cole as a an added bonus.
He was dominant in the first…struck out the side, didn’t throw a ball until batter #3.
After that, pretty ordinary from my eyes….3 runs through 4, some well hit balls including a bomb off the top of the scoreboard.

  41. Eric Bowser says:

What a great shift by Penguins, TK with long-range slap shot, wide open,

  42. Poz says:

Play five on five! Kennedy with a “come on the ice and shot the puck” goal!

  43. Eric Bowser says:

That goal is result of great chip by Staal and awesome forecheck by Cooke to win the race to puck and finds wide open Kennedy.

  44. Poz says:

Anybody who says Crosby is “soft” has too much hatred and bias in their soul to see clearly.

  45. Poz says:

Malkin with another penalty. This one in the Flyers’ end.

  46. Eric Bowser says:

Malkin’s mental game isn’t there, he’s taking too many bad penalties. Team cannot afford to being taking ANY penalties.

  47. Eric Bowser says:

Best PK by Pens all series

  48. Eric Bowser says:

through 2 period, Pens lead 3-2 against Flyers

  49. Poz says:

Eric – on that last rush, did I see a Flyer put is hand over the puck in the crease? And it wasn’t the goalie.

  50. Eric Bowser says:

    Poz – I think so

  51. Poz says:

Thanks Eric. It happened fast, and seeing how they miss cross-checks I can see how they would miss a hand over the puck in the crease. But if they saw it, I think it’s a penalty shot….(if it’s not the goalie).

  52. Eric Bowser says:

Poz – Yeah, not sure about timing of the whistle

  53. Poz says:

With these stretch passes, this might be the Pens doing to what the Flyers identified as a weakness in the Pens scheme….depending on how this game goes, I might ask DK about it. Ithink hee wrote about it (again, I think – it’s red wine night for me ;)

  54. Eric Bowser says:

Poz – Jealous with red wine, been suffering through a kidney stone, passed one and x-ray results show I have another left to pass, which explains the issues I’ve been having and pain but I’m a hockey fan and I’m taking no meds.

These tight games, I need a drink

  55. Poz says:

U r right about the whistle, Eric. I can’t replay it, but they might have blown the whistle when losing sight of the puck. Doesn’t matter at this point. What matters is solid, responsible play – and Fleury.

  56. Eric Bowser says:

    1. Stop the pucks
    2. Stay out of the penalty-box
    3. Play defense

    Simple as that

  57. Poz says:

God love ya, Eric. Know friends who have suffered through them. Get rid of that thing soonest!

  58. Poz says:

Bry with great save on Neal.

  59. Poz says:

I know Barry Melrose said the worst lead is two goals…but I got to tell I’d take it now. I’m gulping red like I’ve been in a desert for a month (sorry Eric, about mention about red)

  60. Poz says:

Another bad penalty – this time Kennedy.

  61. Poz says:

    I’m speechless watching Fleury….

  62. Eric Bowser says:

This team is getting blown out if it wasn’t for Fleury.

  63. Milo Hamilton says:

What’s worse, the kidney stone or watching us try to kill a penalty ?

  64. Eric Bowser says:

refs call everything in game 4 and tonight, some really bad non-calls.

  65. Eric Bowser says:

@Milo – LOL, pain is kidney stone. Water, water, water. This game though, not good for the blood pressure.

  66. Eric Bowser says:

    Pens win, Pens win.

  67. Eric Bowser says:

As I said for game 4, Fleury needed to steal a win… tonight Fleury stole a game. Great great performance by Fleury to win this game.

  68. Eric Bowser says:

Up next: Score first & early in Philly, it will put the Flyers fans into a tizzy and all of Big Mo should be on Pens side then.

  69. Bizrow says:

“Gentlemen, this is our finest hour”

IMO, sweet history can be in the Pens grasp

  70. Robert Kistler says:

I think the coaches read my comments the other day and let Staal-Cooke-Kennedy line obliterate their weaker bottom 2 lines.

    Fleury is back too!!!

    GO PENS!!!

  71. Milo Hamilton says:

I really think they’ve got this 5 on 5. They just have to stay out of the penalty box.

  72. Dave G in Liberty Township, OH says:

    16 = Cup

  73. Poz says:

Computer died in the man cave with about seven minutes to go. Watched Fleury save the rest of the game while throwing up in my mouth….often.

Plugged it in upstairs for some closing thoughts.

So now it is Sunday. I see no scenario where the Pens win after being down 3-0. But it is always about a hot goalie….

    See you then, my friends.

  74. Steve A in Yorktown, VA says:

Great win tonight. It is interesting that so far the team that has scored first has lost every game of this series.

  75. Nate says:

Game 6. Only halfway up the mountain.

  76. Vette60 says:

    Checking in from Richmond, VA.

Wow. That was fun and trying all at the same time.

Two down…one more in Philly and one more at home! MAF looked good in the 2nd and fantastic in the 3rd and the Flyers haven’t scored a 5-on-5 goal in a bout two games…but geez, the PP is killing the Pens.

So…Malkin. Yikes. Reckless is the best word, IMO, to describe his play tonight. From the silly, selfish penalties to running over Sid, etc. Geez. Calm down. The group overall was really good tonight though.

Sunday afternoon can’t come soon enough. Let’s go PENS!

  77. mayhay22 says:

Brian Strait needs to stay on the squad and Martin needs to remain in the press box. Excellent game by 37.

  78. DaveDigsDKsblog says:

I went last night. First playoff game I attended in the new arena.

Can’t imagine there has been a better atmosphere.

Electric from late second period to the end and the irony is the Penguins didn’t score anymore. It was all urging the defense and Fleury.

  79. Danch70 says:

I said the other day that I hadn’t seen enough to be convinced maf was back. Now I’ve seen enough.

  80. likeabugonarug says:

20 hours to faceoff and counting. Let’s bring this back home for a game 7.

Even the CSN Philly announcers were impressed last night with the noise level at Consol.

  81. likeabugonarug says:

On the website, there is a poll for the rest of the series. The current standings:

    Flyers in 6 games – 678 votes
    Flyers in 7 games – 63 votes
Penguins in 7 games – 2 THOUSAND 3 HUNDRED and EIGHTY votes. Yes fans, that’s right. 2380 voters(76.3%) at believe it will be the Pens in 7 games!

  82. Danch70 says:

I wonder what the predictions would be here. I would probably go with the flyers – in 6.
