Final: Pirates 4, Braves 2

Looking ahead to first pitch …

Game: Pirates (8-11) vs. Atlanta Braves (13-7)

Time: 7:10 p.m.

Site: Turner Field, Atlanta

TV, radio: Root Sports, 93.7 The Fan

Here is the live box score. Rob Biertempfel can’t hit, either.

And here is the Pirates’ lineup …

  1. Alex Presley, LF
  2. Jose Tabata, RF
  3. Andrew McCutchen, CF
  4. Garrett Jones, 1B
  5. Neil Walker, 2B
  6. Pedro Alvarez, 3B
  7. Clint Barmes, SS
  8. Rod Barajas, C
  9. Erik Bedard, LHP

  1. RobertoForever says:

Based on the current roster, this is the lineup I would run out there most days vs RHP’s.

  2. Karen22 says:

    NOT with Barajas in it!

  3. JRay3 says:

Let me preface what I am about to say with I am a huge Clint Hurdle fan and think he is a very good manager for our squad, however, very much disappointed with him coming to the defense of the Barajas bat last night with the bases loaded. This is the BIG leagues not everybody gets a ribbon, he makes millions and needs to be held accountable.

With that here’s hoping he gets out of his funk tonight. Leadoff hit, let’s stake an early lead tonight boys! Bedard deserves a win, the toughest luck loser in the bigs.

    Let’s Go Bucs.

  4. JRay3 says:

Nice job to manufacture a first inning run…great for Bedard to go out with a lead!

  5. Eric Bowser says:

LOL, Pirates are 8-2 when scoring 2 or more runs.

Pirates lead 1-0 after RBI sacrifice fly to center by Jones, good tag up by McCutchen to go from 1B to 2B.

  6. Eric Bowser says:

So much for Pedro Alvarez ditching that in-between pitch practice swing, lol.

    Strikes out on high fastball

  7. JRay3 says:

@ Eric – that stat just defies logic.

If this team could just hit a little better it would sit atop the NL Central. Easily 8-11 could be 11-8 or better.

  8. Dave G says:

Bedard pitch after pitch nipping at the left side of plate, just missing. But he comes up clean after one inning.

  9. JRay3 says:

And Bedard wiggles out of the first…time for the Killer B’s – Barajas, Barmes and Bedard to tack on…ok staying positive!

  10. Dave G says:

Braves TV announcer: “Barmes, Barajas, and Bedard up for the Pirates— the killer B’s”

    And then Barajas singles…

  11. Dave G says:

Delgado looks to second at Barajas. Catcher Ross yells at him “Hey… don’t weorry about him! Pitch!”

And Presley drives Barajas home with a double. 2-0 Bucs

  12. JRay3 says:

And Presley continues to produce from the leadoff spot, he seems to be a guy who has just continued to prove a lot of people wrong as until last year I don’t think the Pirates organization felt he could be an everyday player at this level.

  13. Dave G says:

Tabata drives Presley home. 3-0. Tabata to second on the throw.

  14. JRay3 says:

And Tabata with the RBI single!! Good bounce for the Bucs as throw beat Presely…3-0 Bucs! Now let’s watch Bedard work!

  15. Dave G says:

Error charged to catcher on the throw.

  16. JohninOshkosh says:

I don’t think Barajas gets enough credit for his handling of the staff. AJB had his best season with Barajas catching. Kershaw won a Cy young. Now the Pirates staff is off to a killer start. Major League catchers that can hit and call a good game are really not that common. His AB last night was horrid but he is earning some of salary by calling good games.

  17. Dave G says:

    Berdard two strikeouts.

    Thru two innings:

    PIT 3-4-0
    ATL 0-2-1

  18. Dave G says:

    Bedard, scuse me…

  19. Dave G says:

Walker singles. Bucs are 5 for 10 tonight, team average up to .225

  20. JRay3 says:

Pedro opposite field double, his approach getting better and better.

  21. JRay3 says:

Poor AB by Barmes chasing a pitch in the other batters box…definitely need to improve on runners in scoring position less than 2 outs.

  22. JRay3 says:

And Bedard gets Heyward to get out of the inning, 3-1 Bucs…Delgado at 68 pitches, top of the lineup time to do some more damage.

@ John – can not disagree with that assessment in regards to Rod’s handling of the pitching staff and game calling abilities, don’t need him to be a great hitter just a somewhat decent hitter.

  23. JRay3 says:

A 1-2-3 4th for Bedard as he now has 7K’s thru the first 12 outs. So nice to have Burnett and Bedard for both the experience and K an inning ability.

  24. Dave G says:

Bedard now mowing down 7 batters thru 4:

Error to catcher Ross earlier now taken away.

    PIT 3-6-0
    ATL 1-4-0

  25. JAL says:

Since Barajas’ AB is topic, here a view from Pirates Prospects

Barajas’ first-pitch swing not as foolish as it seemed

  26. Dave G says:

Walker, 2 base hit. His first of the season.

  27. Dave G says:

Alvarez a rocket to the wall in right. Walker scores. 4-1 Bucs.

  28. Eric Bowser says:

Good to see Pedro with two doubles tonight, gotta keep it going.

  29. Dave G says:

Pedro is 2 for 3, hitting .180 and climbing fast.

  30. bob hasis says:

If Pedro continues that kind of hitting, I will rescind ALL of my criticism starting tonight.

  31. Eric Bowser says:

If Pedro can hit .250, 25+ HR, 85+ RBI, I’ll be happy

  32. Dave G says:

Bedard walks Livian Hernandez on four pitches~~~~!!!

  33. Dave G says:

Infield hit by Bourn and there are Braves at first and second, no outs in the 5th..

  34. Eric Bowser says:

leadoff walks kill you, one to a pitcher is just deadly.

Bedard just cannot walk Livan Hernandez to start bottom of 5th, just can’t happen.

    Now Bourn gets infield single

    ….hate walks, hate them.

  35. Dave G says:

Passed Ball on Barajas. Runners move up

  36. Eric Bowser says:

this 5th inning is like so many others we’ve seen from many other Pirates pitchers who get a lead and can’t handle it.

  37. JRay3 says:

Huge K for Bedard…just get through the 5th and be eligible for a W.

  38. Huge K right there by Bedard to end the 5th. Let’s get some more hits and runs!!

  39. Dave G says:

Bedard strikes out nine thru 5 innings. Bucs lead 4-1 after 5.

  40. JRay3 says:

Great escape by Bedard…9 K’s through 5 will aid gettting out of a jam from time to time.

  41. Eric Bowser says:

Bedard strikes out Freeman and Uggla to get out of the jam.

Man, it really is nice to have two pitchers (Bedard & Burnett) who can ring up some K’s.

  42. Eric Bowser says:

That’s what they call a Bedard (5 inning quality start)

  43. I hope the bullpen doesn’t implode like they did last night. Has not happened much this year, but I don’t want it to become the trend.

  44. Dave G says:

    Bedard, 5.0 IP 1ER, 6H, 9K, 2BB… ERA: 2.48

  45. When the pitchers don’t even bother looking runners back, then that causes the catchers to not have any chance to throw people out.

  46. Dave G says:

Heyward doubles, steals third, scores on grounder to first. Bucs lead 4-2 with 2 down in bottom of the 6th.

  47. Karen22 says:

Not one iota impressed by Resop this year. Wish Bedard had started the bottom of the 6th.

  48. Dave G says:

Pastornicky providing lots of souvenirs to fans in right field stands

  49. JRay3 says:

Resop certainly has made it hard on himself by having to throw the same 90-92 MPH fastball with no confidence in any other pitch.

  50. Dave G says:

Single to right, Tabata misplays it and Pastornicky to third on error.

  51. Clearly Resop didn’t want to throw some slow pitch to try and get the SS. Nice for Tabata to keep that in front of him. He wants to be like Roberto, he needs to watch him on video.

  52. JRay3 says:

Outfield defense has hurt tonight, Cutch diving earlier cost a run and now Tabata asleep.

  53. Eric Bowser says:

At what point does Tabata get benched?

  54. Dave G says:

Bucs had gone 59 innings without an error…

  55. Dave G says:

28 pitches in the inning for Resop. Side retired.

  56. JRay3 says:

And finally Resop brings the off-speed stuff to retire Jones. Labored through 28 pitches to get us to the 7th. The Braves will make us earn this.

  57. bob hasis says:

The annoying Braves War Chant is a cheap imitation of the Florida State Seminoles, and they usually only use it when a rally is about to start, making it more irritating.

  58. Dave G says:

    After 6:

    PIT 4-8-1… 8 LOB
    ATL 2-7-0… 7 LOB

  59. Dave G says:

    Bucs down quietly in 7th.

  60. Eric Bowser says:

another 1-2-3 inning for Pirates, heading to bottom of 7th. Did not like that 2-strike approach by Pedro.

  61. Don’t know why the Braves just don’t throw Martinez against the Bucs every game, we can’t hit him at all.

  62. Dave G says:

Cruz pitching the 7th for Bucs

    Resop: 29 pitches in 1IP, 1ER, 2H, 0BB, 0K… ERA now 3.24

  63. I may be behind here as my system may be showing me the game slowly, but if Bourn walks, you can expect the third run to score.

  64. AJS says:

The Tommahawk chop actually started in Atlanta as far as I know. Back in 1991 when they went from worst to first and beat the bucs in the NLCS. Florida State stole it from them…the Braves have since changed the piped in music to be the FSU band, but I ma pretty sure it was originally the Braves.

What a lucky break there to get the double play. Could have been first and third.

  65. I’m glad Cruz didn’t screw up that ball headed to Walker. Nice play by Walker to keep his foot on the bag.

  66. JRay3 says:

Fortunate DP, I’ll take it….our bullpen could certainly make things less nerve racking if we could get the lead off guy.

  67. Dave G says:

Bourn singles, erased on a double play. Freeman grounds out to short. Bucs lead 4-2 after 7 innings.

  68. You think they would have a better scouting report or game plan against Martinez after the 5 innings of shutout ball last year during the 19 inning fiasco. Poor swings against him for the second inning. The offense continues to keep the pressure on the pitching to be sharp at all times. Hope they get it done.

  69. Dave G says:

Grilli pitching bottom 8th for Bucs.

    Cruz: 1.0 IP, 0R, 1H, 0BB, 0K

  70. Dave G says:

    Cruz’s ERA: 0.00 for the season…

  71. Dave G says:

Grilli K’s Uggla. Grilli K’s Heyward. Grilli K’s Ross.

    Perfect 8th for Grilli.

  72. Dave G says:

Bucs pitchers now at 12 K’s thru 8 innings.

  73. Dave G says:

    Attendance 34,086 at Turner Field

  74. Dave G says:

Cutch with a double. Two outs in the ninth.

  75. JRay3 says:

How many doubles does Cutch have that have hit the top of the wall this year? I can recall at least three.

  76. Dave G says:

Hammer on to pitch the 9th.

    Grilli: 1.0 IP, 0R, 0H, 3K… ERA now at 3.38

  77. Dave G says:

Hanrahan K’s Francisco. Hanrahan K’s Pastornicky. Tabata at the wall grabs third out on Hinske drive. Bucs Win!

  78. JRay3 says:

On a great catch by Jose Tabata you can Raise the Jolly Rodger…the Bucs even the series up and provide enough run support to give Eric Bedard his first win of the season!

  79. Tabata makes up for that over running of the ball earlier, and Eric Bedard gets his first W. Lets have a rude greeting for Tim Hudson tomorrow and keep it going. Go Bucs! Night all!

  80. Dave G says:

    PIT 4-9-1—-9LOB
    ATL 2-8-0—7LOB

    WP Bedard 1-4
    LP Delgado 2-2

Bucs pitchers rack up 14 Ks tonight, 5 of them on the last 6 batters!

  81. Dave G says:

    Hanrahan, 4th save: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 2K: ERA 2.57

  82. bob hasis says:

According to FSU’s web site, it began in 1984 and became a permanent entity in 1985 including the “chop motion”.

When the Pirates play major league baseball, they seem pretty good. We just need more repitions of tonight’s game

  83. RobertoForever says:

Wow, lot of misplaced frustration on here.

First attack Barajas. Even though he’s a veteran game-caller that Burnett and Beard speak very highly of. Oh and he was 1 for 2 with 2 BB’s and contributed more than Clutch tonight.

Then attack Cruz, he of the 0.00 ERA.

Oh, and all the cheap cracks are hilarious. Praising Braves relievers, while not even praising our Grill I who struck out the side. Great fans there.

Also still picking apart, Pedro, huh. Guy is 2 for 4 with 2 doubles, and we nit-pick his K’s. Awesome.

All I can say is, Raise the Jolly Roger! Another great win by our Buccos. Keep winning anyway you want or can. Lets win the series tomorrow.

  84. @ Roberto, this is a four game series. One of those stupid wrap around ones. Dude, you need a hug. We all want this team to win very badly. At times we do like to vent frustration when they continue to do the same thing over and over. I enjoyed watching Grilli punch out the side, but he has been doing that this whole year so far (and I hope he keeps it up). Let’s go get them tomorrow, one game at a time.

  85. RobertoForever says:

@Steve – I don’t need a hug. I am able to watch the Pirates and see a guy strikeout and not react like the world is ending.

People that need a hug are ones who conclude after a strikeout for Pedro in his first ab means he has regressed from his progress in the last 5 games. Oops, he was 2 for 4 with 2 doubles.

I expect constant cheap shots from the mother ship and opposing announcers. Excuse me if I don’t appreciate the constant, uncalled for cheap shots from ‘fans’ of the team I also root for.

And yes, thanks for the loving reminder of the series being a 4 game series.

  86. RobertoForever says:

Thx for the link to the Barajas article. They use my favorite website,

Its a slight disappoint though that Brooks changed the site from being able to see all the pitches in game, to waiting until after the game. That whole delayed gratification thing.

    Good stuff.
