  8. JAL says:

Theme this week is the Broadway musical. Although music had been on Broadway since 1860, the first true Broadway musical show was Showboat, 1927. Written by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II it is considered to be the first musical play. A number of songs from the show have remained popular. The show has been filmed twice, 1936 and 1951. The show is also periodically revived. The show has also had its share controversy due to the theme. This version of Ol’ Man River is from the 1936 film. Although this was only 9 years after the Broadway debut, some of the lyrics were changed for the film. They would be changed again for the 1951 film. The 1927 lyrics and original score are on a 1988 album conducted by John McGlinn.

  9. John in Ross says:

I think for once for once the Pirates may have the upper hand on Scott Boras. I believe they will make (or may already have made) one good solid offer within the restrictions of the new draft rules. Boras will do his usual dance holding his breathe, not returning calls until 10 minutes before midnight on the last day at which point he will find the Pirate brass in bed fast asleep and dreaming of having the 9 th round pick in a much better draft. None of which is in the best interest of his client but when it comes to the baseball draft his client’s interest fall a distant second to his ego.

  10. Eric Bowser says:

Heading to the game today, Section 140, Row H, Seats 19 & 20. I’ll be wearing black Pirates hat, mostly white McCutchen #22 jersey . My 6-yr old son (Perry) will be with me as well. If anyone wants to stop and say hello, please do, I don’t bite.

Will be first time trying out the new subway T line from First Avenue Garage to the Subway at North Shore. Did I mention I have a phobia of being underground?

Anyway, was hoping to see Alvarez in the lineup against Bruce Chen in order for some HR power potential out in CF.

AJ Burnett, let’s keep this moving.

An old game tradition at a site I used to go to, I’ll file a game report when I get home tonight on my thoughts and hopefully those of my son.

Until then, get in the batter’s box and dig in, the old ball game is ready to go.

  11. Aaron says:

I know Burnett is pitching but I’m still shocked to see Barajas catching a day after night game.

  12. likeabugonarug says:

Today’s line: Please give me 50 on the under.

AJ is going to go 7.2 innings today, Bucs are going to score some runs to give the Hammer and Jared and the rest of the pen some rest. Bucs pull off the sweep, which will make me a happy loser of the 30 I put down on Friday that they wouldn’t sweep.

    Thanks!

  13. I’ll take 50 on the UNDER. Thanks.

  14. DemonDachshund says:

    @JAL/Playoffs – 80 on the UNDER.

Burnett makes me lose for the first time, as the Bucs break out the brooms today, moving into a tie for 1st place.

  15. Drew71 says:

    What’s the vig?

  16. Officer Mancuso says:

Today’s line: 20 on the Under.

  23. JRay3 says:

Have to believe AJ is going to do all he can to make it at least seven innings after the bullpen has had to cover a lot of innings the past few games.

So I will bank on the arm of the veteran here and say 40 on the UNDER.

    Let’s Go Bucs!

@ Eric – enjoy the game today and look forward to your recap.

    Thanks for manning the window.

  32. JohninOshkosh says:

Saw an interesting bit in this week’s SI. In an MLB Players Poll, A.J. Burnett finished second to C.J. Wilson as the most overrated pitcher in the game (14% to A.J.’s 10 %). It was based on 227 MLB player responses, but I am not sure when the survey was taken.

Remember that guy 5 or 6 years ago who sold his Royals “loyalty” on ebay? This was supposed to be a decent year for the Royals. I feel bad for them. Their fan base deserves a winner just like the pirate fans. Still hope they get swept today, though.

JAL please change mine to 20 on the under. I originally was betting like the over meant Burnett going more then 6.5. Sorry and thanks.

JAL – thanks for stepping up for the window, in addition to all the links as well.

I always get a little leery when I’ve made up my mind, and then I come to the blog and the action is heavy that way. But I gotta go with the data, lol.

Burnett has been very good, but not 8 IP good lately. Could dominate today, but 7IP is probably the max in the projected 90 degree heat today.

I will take 50 on the under.

Rooting for the sweep, even though I will lose a big lay on the sweep o/u. fake units well spent, lol.

  41. RobertoForever says:

    JAL

just realized I read the o/u wrong. Its a line on 2.5 IP for bullpen. I will go OVER. I turned it into a line on AJ, accidentally.

so to correct. I will take 50 units on the OVER for the bullpen going 2.5 IP.

    Sorry for the confusion

  42. SlackBoss says:

    @playoffs under for 65

  45. JRay3 says:

cutch 0-16 versus the Royals no more with a RBI double to the gap and Bucs jump on top early! Always big when Alex gets on from the leadoff position.

  46. Cutch ends his hitless streak and gaps a double to right-center for a Bucs 1-0 lead and one out.

  47. JRay3 says:

AJ with a very efficient two innings of work throwing just 17 pitches to retire first six batters he has faced.

  48. JAL says:

First pitch strikes usually help pitch counts.

  49. Big day for Cutch with that two run dinger. 3-0 now.

  50. JRay3 says:

The 51 M dollar man strikes again…Cutch two run bomb his 11th gives Pirates 3-0 lead…get him to the All-Star game.

  51. JAL says:

I think that $51 million is a good investment in several ways.

  52. likeabugonarug says:

And A.J. wants to get out of the heat quickly. 44 pitches through 4. Pretty good so far.

  53. JRay3 says:

AJ Burnett is in total command today…just 44 pitches thrown and has faced just 13 batters to secure first 12 outs.

Too much success by opposition stealing bases on our backstops, something that will need to be addressed or that may hurt down the road.

  54. JRay3 says:

I will at least give it to Rod in that he was running as hard as he possibly could to get back. Tough break as it looked like he wanted to be able to score had it dropped in.

  55. likeabugonarug says:

And I had to jinx A.J. Fifth not going so well for him. 2 walks so far, lots of pitches.

  56. Boise Bucco says:

So that hit-by-pitch was all part of the plan…hmm…..

  57. JRay3 says:

And just what the doctor ordered…quick visit to the mound, than one pitch to get out of the inning, half way home Bucs still up three!

  58. likeabugonarug says:

And then he goes and gets the DP ball out. 64 through 5 is still a good number (13/inning).

  59. JAL says:

    likeabugonarug

You certainly did–5 minutes in the corner for you :)

  60. RobertoForever says:

Wow, Alex Presley is 0 for 5 on steal attempts?? That needs to be corrected. Can’t have a leadoff guy getting erased like that.

  61. twentytwo22 says:

Inexcusable to get picked off with McCutchen on deck. If Walker doesn’t hit into a DP McCutchen is guaranteed an at-bat with a man on base. He has a double and a homerun. They got lucky.

  62. RobertoForever says:

Forget it, MLB Gameday is showing 1SB, 4 CS. The real stats are 6 SB, 4 CS.

  63. Officer Mancuso says:

The 2′nd most overrated pitcher in the game seems to have somthing to say today. Rock on AJ!

  64. likeabugonarug says:

JAL – is my 5 minutes up yet?

  65. twentytwo22 says:

Burnett’s pitching and McCutchen’s hitting get an A++ so far.

  66. Officer Mancuso says:

Two more outs by Burnett and I can retire a wealthy man!

  67. Jay Jax Fl via New Castle says:

Storming here in Jacksonville. I’ve missed the last inning or so. Updates……?????

  68. JAL says:

    likeabugonarug

Yes, 5 minutes well up post at will :)

  69. JAL says:

    Officer M

No guarantee until game over. AJ could go 8, Royals tie it in 9th and pen pitches a few extra innings

  70. Officer Mancuso says:

JAL, I hadn’t thought of that, which may explain why I don’t work on Wall Street!

  71. Nice 7 innings so far for AJ. How about some extra runs from the offense to make it a better cushion.

  72. JAL says:

Surprised AJ back for the 8th

  73. JRay3 says:

Could not ask for much more from Burnett today, time for Watson and Cruz to finish this one out!

  74. JAL says:

Another tight game–Pirates just don’t score enough to have many easy wins

  75. JRay3 says:

    Juan Cruz!!! Marbles.

@ JAL – good thing we have the number one NL bullpen….backend has been phenomenal protecting the lead.

  76. JAL says:

That was tense 8th. Now 1 run game heading to bottom of 8th

  77. RobertoForever says:

Would like to see an insurance run. C’mon Casey, Jose and Hot Rod

  78. JRay3 says:

Looks like Jason Grilli will have chance to become fourth Pirate pitcher to earn save this year.

  79. Officer Mancuso says:

Burnett’s finding his way into my pantheon of admirable athletes. Great showing today. DK tweeted that he got a standing ovation when pulled. I’d have been on my feet.

  80. likeabugonarug says:

I was close. I said A.J. would go 7.2. Come on Jason……just like your name (my youngest child is named Jason)!

  81. Chico says:

Why no Hanrahan? I mean, I like Grilli getting the chance, but is it solely performance based?

  82. Officer Mancuso says:

I’ve already rented my place in the retirement community in Aruba although I have no pension and my 401(K) is worth $0.02. Grilli, my fate is in your hands. Go Bucs!

  83. JRay3 says:

This strike zone has turned absurd.

  84. likeabugonarug says:

@Chico – Hanrahan has pitched last 3 games, and Hurdle doesn’t like to have pen go more than 3 days in a row.

  85. JRay3 says:

@ Chico – Hanrahan has thrown three straight days so shutdown today.

  86. Chico says:

    Thanks for the info guys.

@JRay — yeah, i’m watching it on the MLB app. He threw two definite strikes that were called balls on that walk.

  87. JRay3 says:

Behind seven plus solid innings from AJ Burnett and three RBI’s from Andrew McCutchen the Buccos down the Royals 3-2 to earn their fourth straight win and second sweep of the season and there was noooooooooooo doubt about it!

    let’s go Tigers!

  88. likeabugonarug says:

And we had ‘em ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLL the way! Nice job Jason! Glad to lose on the wins under. Best non-30 that I ever lost!

  89. jaxbuc says:

Wow. Cant believe he didnt even swing.

  90. twentytwo22 says:

If you weren’t sweating that one then you should be a surgeon.

  91. Bucco Brooms are out and happy to be waving with those Jolly Rogers!! Now lets keep it up on the road. I’ll be there on Thursday for the third game of the series.

  92. Officer Mancuso says:

Aruba here I come! 3 called strikes! Here’s to the Detroit Tigers at 8.

  93. TJA says:

It’s going to be a fun summer in the ‘Burgh! I like what I am seeing from this team…

  94. twentytwo22 says:

    McCutchen 3 Royals 2.

  95. JAL says:

Pen only pitched 1.2 innings so the under wins today

  96. RobertoForever says:

Great outing by AJ!! Buccos win another 1-run game, now 17-10 in 1-run games.

Also 19-11 at home. And who said that going to a Pirates game was not exciting or little chance to win??

Much deserved day off tomorrow. Win another 1st of a series in Baltimore on Tuesday, Bucs!

  97. DemonDachshund says:

Also, under 30.5 hits and over 2.5 wins for the series, I believe.

  98. JAL says:

    DemonDachshund

Playoffs will handle all the data when he gets back. Probably will have something here later tonight or tomorrow.

  99. Bizrow says:

I needed those weekend bets, else I would be a bit lower than whale doo-doo ;-)

  100. JRay3 says:

A little more good news…after escaping a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the eigth, the Indians just hit a three run HR to take 4-1 lead on St Louis in the 9th, great chance to gain another game on the Cardinals.

  101. cosmo says:

The window will have the updated standings shortly.

JAL, seriously thank you again for everything!!

  104. Officer Mancuso says:

At this point, it seems to me indisputable that NH is *the* guru of stringing together pitching staffs on a budget. He learned faster than his old Cleveland team that you can’t to that by taking low velocity pitch to contact guys as your whole strategy.

  105. Officer Mancuso says:

In a perfect world the Pirates and Indians would be in the same division.

  106. Bizrow says:

For being the 200th confirmed lunatic locality, Mad Turk will get a 1971 Danny Murtaugh Topps Card

A lunatic from Manitoba, something special

Heroes in the military, same thing

DK: Just put out a notice for Manitobans on Twitter. We’ll see.

I might send that person a Jagr Rookie Card ;-)

    Thanks for helping Dejan

  111. Eric Bowser says:

I’ll post more later but that was the best baseball game that I’ve ever attended, obviously for far greater meaning as a father with his son who connected on so many levels about the game. So proud!

Go Bucs and more later tonight.

  112. Milo Hamilton says:

    DK,

So you were finally able to sneak up on me & get a picture. I’m actually hidden by Honus Wagner standing next to a guy in a sweet George Brett jersey. Just glad to see a win on a beautiful day.

    DK: For real?

  113. Bizrow says:

    @Eric

Glad you had a great time

I remember our little one dancing behind the Cobra sign in 79

He may not remember it, but I do

I want to talk to him, coherently, when they do it one more time

  114. Eric Bowser says:

It isn’t often that a baseball fan sitting in attendance at PNC Park fails to realize his hometown team’s starting pitcher has a no-hitter for five innings but when your team is winning 3-0 thanks to an RBI doublee and 2-run homerun by Andrew McCutchen while seated next to your six year old son, today was one of those days. Pitcher A.J. Burnett was dynamite striking out six and walking two over 7 1/3 innings on what felt like 100 degrees in the sun.

My son Perry is six years old and today we had a great father-son game to experience together thanks to the gift-giving Kansas City Royals. What else is there to think after the Pirates’ leftfielder Alex Presley was standing at second base in the first inning and one out with McCutchen, the team’s lone offensive threat, at the plate. Royals pitcher Bruce Chen made a mistake and McCutchen lined an RBI double to right centerfield for an early 1-0 Pirates lead.

If once you don’t succeed, try, try again. That must have been the failing thought running through the mind of Chen in the third inning. This time Neil Walker was at first base and two outs, McCutchen at bat and boom goes the dynamite with a line drive two-run homerun just over the left field wall. Sitting in the stands in section 140, Row H, seats 19 & 20 in right center was as good a seat as any to hear the murmur of the fans when McCutchen walks to the plate.

I haven’t heard that legitimate expectation, excitement and respect for a Pirates hitter since outfielder Brian Giles was belting homeruns over the Clemente wall at PNC Park. It is why I purchased an Andrew McCutchen jersey this morning, he’s earned my respect as a player to put him into the conversation about this team, rather than just a plain Pirates shirt or jersey.

While McCutchen was tossing the ball back and forth with Josh Harrison between innings, I explaind to my son, that’s the best ball player on the team and he asked why, I said, he’s not a big guy but he keeps his head still and lightning quick swinging the bat through the zone. After the McCutchen homerun and high five celebration, I got the, “dad, you’re right, he’s good”.

If a six year old can grasp the understanding of McCutchen’s success, shouldn’t every team?

Though after the third inning, Pirates offense managed to do virtually nothing but collect one single, which made viewing the game in that sun all the more worrisome with the home plate umpire appearing to have a strikezone the size of a grapefruit. Did I not suffer enough in my youth watching Randy Marsh shrink the zone on Stan Belinda in the 9th inning, did my son deserve to suffer the same by Derryl Cousins?

The bullpen held it together but it was intense in the 9th inning as Jason Grilli had runners at first and second with one out and finished the game striking out the last two hitters. None better than a good battle with Alex Gordon.

Listening to my son yelling “Let’s Go Bucs” throughout but really intense in the 9th, what a dream to experience that as he admitted in the car on the way home, I really like baseball.

Today, Pirates earned themselves a new Pirates fan, not just one who was born to be one.

    What a day!

    Pictures

  115. @Playoffs, are you and the Mrs planning on any of the Orioles games? I think it was you that said you may try and get to one. If so, I will be at the third game of the series. Let me know.

  116. bob hasis says:

I’m not sure if anyone commented on this earlier, but another very irresponsible call by an umpire was made, when RF Maier flipped over the wall and robbed Cutch.

ESPN clearly showed the ball was under Maier’s back and he reached around with his bare hand to pick it up as the 1st base ump was late in getting there running down the line waving his right hand to signal an out.

In my opinion, the umpiring has deteriorated this year. I won’t even mention their diverse interpretation of the strike zone. I’ll bet Bud Selig is running baseball – Mr Incompetence himself.

  117. Milo Hamilton says:

    @Bob

I saw the highlights of Mitch Meier’s non catch on Baseball Tonight. And to think I gave him polite applause. I hereby rescind my polite applause.

  118. bob hasis says:

    @milo

he was undeserving of your kindness.

But some of these rotten calls are so blatantly open and obvious, they should not be missed.

Like the call in Atlanta last year which “helped” destroy our momentum

  119. Eric Bowser says:

@Milo and Bob – Yeah, kinda disgusted that I stood up and clapped for that “catch”, now that I’ve seen the ESPN video replay.

By the way, really poor job by the Pirates for not showing anything remotely close to being controversial on the scoreboard.

What’s the use of the stupid thing if you aren’t going to use it.

  120. LuckyNKentucky says:

Nice post, Eric and nice pix of you and your son.

  121. bob hasis says:

    @Eric
I think there is some “unofficial” rule inspired by the “wisdom” of Selig and Major League Umpires Assn. not to show such plays.

The controversy would be too demeaning for the fragile psyche of the umpires.

  122. Eric Bowser says:

How long does Dave Dombrowski sit and wait for this Detroit team to turn it around?

    Tigers need pitching.

  123. cosmo says:

On the Pirates postgame on ROOT, Rob King made a comment about the catch/noncatch and Teke went into a story about a play at 3 Rivers in which Stargell, Parker and Stennet were chasisng after a popup. Stennet pull up at the last second and Stargell and Parker ran into each other crashing to the ground. He said that Stennet quickly picked up the ball and shoved it in Stargell’s glove and the ump made the out call. As Teke said a head’s up play. It happens. Fortunately it didn’t affect the outcome of the game.

  124. JAL says:

    Eric

    Nice pictures

  125. cosmo says:

    @ Eric

I think Bob is correct. Don’t want to stirup and contraversy and rile up the home crowd

  126. @Eric, great photos and what a great pre-Father’s Day event for your son to go to the game with you. Many more to come, and hopefully a lot of them wins.

  127. Milo Hamilton says:

    DK,

No kidding. I was standing at the gate waiting to get in from about 11:45 until the gates opened at 12:00. Pretty much the same thing I do every Sunday. If I would have seen you back there, I would have come over to say hi.

  128. MadTurk says:

    @Bizrow

“confirmed lunatic locality, Mad Turk” I think I’ve that before…

  129. twentytwo22 says:

    #25 Derrek Lee.

  130. JohninOshkosh says:

Perry Bowser. What a great name. With a name like that, the kid is destined for greatness! Nice post.

  131. Milo Hamilton says:

When is someone going to tell us what Robbie Grossman did ? Somebody has to know, or could find out.

  132. likeabugonarug says:

@Eric and Bob regarding replays: Actually, that “rule” has been around for quite a few decades, ever since video boards came into being or not long thereafter. Basically teams aren’t allowed to show anything controversial as far as calls when it comes to showing a play. Not in catches/noncatches, safe or out calls, close pitches, etc…. Nothing having to do with Selig in this case. And it may actually be in the umpires’ labor agreement, but am not positive on that.

  133. JohninOshkosh says:

    @Milo:

I’m glad Dejan’s camera did not catch you. I have an image of you in my head and I would hate for that to be shattered!

  134. Eric Bowser says:

Thanks all for the nice comments about the pictures and post.

@John – He’s got a good arm, just needs to concentrate on where he’s throwing. If my son turns into a baseball player, it would be fun.

@Milo – Going to be hard to find out as Grossman is probably not in a position to talk about it and no one from team would be dumb enough to talk, so I think it leaves teammates to talk off the record or maybe even someone within the team’s affiliate group that isn’t happy about losing services of one of the top prospects.

  135. Milo Hamilton says:

    @Eric

Great stuff today & loved the pictures.

  136. bob hasis says:

    @likeabug

I’m certain it’s in the Labor Agreement for Umpires. My point in mentioning Selig is, has that subject ever been discussed under his tutelage.
You know in the context of “full disclosure”, why shouldn’t the grubby ticket buying public be privy to the truth. They are the hard core fan.

They have dugout interviews with the manager during the game – which nobody is interested in – what info of real interest will the manager divulge.

However a play on the field should be fully shown to the fans in attendance!!!

  137. Eric Bowser says:

How far and wide are the Pirates searching for hitting help?

Team needs a #4 and #5 hitter in order to move down Alvarez to a more comfortable role in the #6 spot in the lineup.

Presley, Walker, and McCutchen is a nice top of the order when all three are playing well and Alvarez, Barajas, and Barmes/Harrison is alright in the 6-8 spots.

What would the Twins want for 1B/DH Justin Morneau and possibly OF Josh Willingham? These two guys would fill the two needs quite well, I think.

Does anyone want Alfonso Soriano invading RF with this team? He seems like a pure me type player.

OF Carlos Quentin could be another to fit the need for a RH bat

  138. JohninOshkosh says:

Soriano has been on a tear lately. Today, Bob Brenly said he was auditioning for an American League team for DH. His outfield play this year has been better, too. I’ve seen him carry a team, offensively, when he is hot. H

  139. Playoffs by 2012 says:

    @Steve

Mrs. Playoffs isn’t sure she can finagle her work schedule to accommodate going to a game so the window may have to stay grounded. I’ll let you know as soon as I know.

  140. JohninOshkosh says:

Sorry, I messed up there. Wanted to finish by noting that his contract is horrible. He is signed through 2014. The Padres love Quentin. Not sure they would part with him since their year is already over. They would want more than what he is worth. I’m still intrigued with Youkilis.

  141. TDB1977 says:

It’s getting good in Cincy. Baseball loaded with no outs and Chapman just hit in a man in with the bases loaded. 6-4 in the 8th with the Reds in front.

  142. TDB1977 says:

    6-6 in Cincy!!!

  143. JRay3 says:

Dusty Baker is always good for blowing a couple games a year…Chapman looks shaky…bases loaded 0 out Cabrera up tied at 6 already four in, come on Tigers!

  144. TDB1977 says:

Wild pitch scores the go ahead run! Can you believe that the Pirates could be tied for first place before this night is out?

  145. bob hasis says:

    @johninOshkosh

Have you seen Soriano play lately? His legs are gone, but he certainly can swing the bat. He needs to go American League

  146. Playoffs by 2012 says:

I normally don’t like getting involved in perspective trade talks but here goes……..

Morneau – Pretty sure he has 5 and 10 rights now, so it would be up to him if he wanted to come here. I think his swing would do real well at PNC and he would easily be the #4 in the lineup. But he’s one tap to the forehead away from retirement, and I just don’t see him coming here.

Quentin – Another big time injury risk player. If he stays healthy he can be a real good RBI machine, but again that’s if he can stay healthy. Wouldn’t mind seeing him, only if the price is right.

Youkilis – Always liked him. He’s the type of guy a winning team needs to have. Gritty, gets on base, hates to lose. He could play 1st and 3rd, as well as draw a ton of walks. But again, he’s gotta stay healthy. He’s another I wouldn’t mind if we was had for the right price.

Soriano – Negative, ghostrider, the pattern is full. We strikeout enough already. Plus I think he’s still got 2 more years on that brutal contract.

Derrek Lee – Not coming back ever. Too bad, I liked what he brought to the team, but he ain’t not never (triple negative word score there) coming back.

Josh Willingham – Guy puts up some good numbers. Never really been a fan of his, but can’t really complain about his production. However, I believe he’s got 2 more years left on his contract with the Twins, and it’s at 7 million per year. Don’t know how motivated they are gonna be to move him or what it would cost to get him.

Chase Headley – This name really intrigues me a lot. The guy has good numbers, not great but good. He’s under team control for 2 more years I believe, and he can hit from both sides of the plate. San Diego is gonna want a bunch for him, and rightly so. Would he in fact be an upgrade compared to Alvarez? If the Padres want Alvarez in return, would you make that trade?

Kendrys Morales – The Angels still seem to have a log jam at 1B/3B/RF, and you’d have to imagine that Morales is going to be the odd man out in the long term. He is older than Mark Trumbo, and is arbitration eligible again after this season. I really see him as the odd man out in Anaheim, and I think he would be a great addition in Pittsburgh. He has shown he can hit for average and power, and would fill a need at 1B. But again, he has injury concerns, and he would definitely cost more to get than some other on this list. I wouldn’t mind at all seeing him in the black and gold though.

Torii Hunter – Definitely on the decline as far as skills are concerned, but could possibly be had on the cheap. Would make a real nice defensive outfield, but don’t know how much sense acquiring him would be for this team.

Mark Trumbo – I can’t see anyway possible that the Angels offload this guy unless they get a ton in return for him.

Brian LaHair – I really see him as “The Legend Part Deux.” Plus, I think he has problems hitting lefties (I may be wrong on that), but do we really need another left handed hitter who can’t hit lefties? Again if he can be had at the right price, I don’t think it would be a bad move. But I don’t think he’s really that big an upgrade over what is currently here.

Again, these are just my opinions on a few name that “might” be out there. I am by no means an expert. I am only a window. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next 7-8 weeks as far as transactions are concerned.

DK: Hang on a bit, man, and put this on the Wakeup Call so it’s at the top of a thread. Good stuff here. Don’t want to lose it.

  147. TDB1977 says:

Can the Tigers put Verlander in to finish this game tonight? :)

  148. JohninOshkosh says:

    @Playoffs:

Great post! Yes I give up Alvarez for Headley. Absolutely spot on about LaHair. I would put the cross hairs on Youkilis and Headley from the group you analyzed.

    @Bob:

Agreed. Soriano belongs in the AL. Plus, his contract makes me nauseous.

It’s fun to even be thinking about trades that are made with the post season in mind.

  149. Jay Jax Fl via New Castle says:

Anyone notice how Brandon Phillips swiped at a ball earlier instead of getting in front of it. Leading to a run????…He sure has helped us out this week…..

  150. bob hasis says:

    @JohninOshkosh

It’s gettin’ scary man, we are starting to agree a lot. Youkilis YES, Headley Y-Y-Y-YEs and give them PA. I started to stutter a bit when I thought of PA – going to SD

  151. TDB1977 says:

Bucs are tied for first place with the Reds! #SlapPhillipsinFace

  152. bob hasis says:

    Hello First Place

  153. JRay3 says:

And 59 games into the season we can all say it….”your first place Pittsburgh Pirates”.

@ Playoffs – interesting write up….I would take Headly, Youk, or Morales amongst those names. One would have to imagine with rumors that the Pirates are talking to multiple teams about adding a corner infield bat the next few weeks will be very interesting. I find the timing of this heating up to be ironic as we are close to getting Karstens back, a decision on Morton will be due soon so maybe one of these clubs is interested in getting an arm.

Should be a fun few weeks nonetheless.

  154. Playoffs by 2012 says:
