  1. pghboyinca says:

Huge game for the Pirates, Jmac did his job last night and hopefully Burnett can come through as well. If the Bucs don’t score it is all irrelevant. 3 marginal starters to follow so A.J. needs to put his finger in the dike.

  2. raddio wave says:

Will the losing streak stop today?
    Will they score a run?
    Is the window open today??

  3. Playoffs by 2012 says:

The window isn’t exactly thrilled to see the same crap-tastic lineup go out there again, but the window is a professional and the show must go on…….

Today’s OVER / UNDER (always just for fun of course)

Total Combined Hits + Walks by Pedro Alvarez, Jose Tabata and Clint Barmes
    Line is 2.5

Anyone can play!! Everyone should TRY!! What’ll ya have!! What’ll ya have!!

  4. SlackBoss says:

@playoffs – 100 on the over – I have inside info that Hurdle is making all 3 bat blindfolded!

  5. radio wave says:

    At playoffs:
I’ll take 60 on the under.

  6. Nate83 says:

    100 on the over. Thanks

  7. @Playoffs, I’ll go 100 on the OVER. Thanks.

  8. JRay3 says:

@ Playoffs – Well is today the day the Pirates restore any semblance of hope? If so it will take an awakening by the bats from their slumber. So frustrating to watch in less than a week’s time the team go from first place to now being closer to fourth place. But today is a new day so time to tackle the Over/Under-

So today we look at Alvarez, Tabata, (and my favorite Bucco) Barmes. I will open by saying there is a better chance today’s game will be postponed by snow than there is of a Clint Barmes walk so that will not be of any assistance.

Tabata in his 10 full games in June surprisingly has 13 hits, 5 multi-hit games and adds four walks to the equation this month, two of which came on days he did not have a hit. He seems a very safe bet to get at least one hit/walk and an outside chance at two. His avg. in the month is 1.7.

Alvarez (they still start him?). Well he is 4 for his last 34 and only has three hits in the nine games he has started this month, He does not walk often, just four times in the month and 17 times all year. His average hits + walks per game in the month is .77- not a lot of faith in him.

Barmes- well as I mentioned up top he never walks just twice all season. He has 11 hits in June in 11 games this month giving him an average of 1 hit a game. He has gone three games this month without a hit and has three multi-hit games. Tough to put faith in him.

On average the numbers say these three players will net 3.4 hits and walks in a contest giving the Over the advantage. So I will play the numbers and take 50 on the OVER.

I don’t want to think about these three not meeting this number so nothing but positive thoughts… let’s get this win!

  9. SlackBoss says:

@JRay – you forgot to factor in the blindfolds. I think that might help Barmes the most, although all 3 have had terrible command of the strike zone.

  10. Bizrow says:

    @Playoffs 50 on the OVAH,

I just went about 100 mph from Robinson cause I didn’t know the game started at 4:05

I need to taste a win tonight

  11. MarkV says:

I’ll take 25 on the OVER. Thanks.

  12. Chico says:

    20 on the over

  13. Playoffs by 2012 says:

@Slack, radio, nate, Steve, JRay, Bizrow, MarkV and Chico

You got it and good luck!!

  14. The Bucs have somehow forgotten how to make any contact with that small orb being thrown at them.

  15. All except for McCutchen, of course.

  16. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Somehow we all knew McGehee was going to do that. This has been an utterly listless and unmotivated team since Sunday.

  17. JRay3 says:

@ Playoffs – isn’t that the truth it has gotten to the point that it is less disappointing because we all expect the outcome before it comes to fruition.

AJ better throw a shutout today.

  18. Playoffs by 2012 says:

I fear that was the ball game……

  19. JRay3 says:

Should have been a strikeout the pitch before on missed call and instead a solo shot followed by Barmes showing lack of range.

  20. Dave G says:

AL teams are successful against Burnett, as evidenced by his record in recent seasons.

Woeful start as Cabrera homers for the Tribe.

  21. Dave G says:

    It’s DAVE’S fault!

(Just getting that out of the way!)

  22. RobertoForever says:

Hopefully not too late since none of the 3 have batted. I’ll go with 60 on the over, please. Thanks!

  23. Playoffs by 2012 says:

@Roberto, way to sneak in, you got it and good luck!!

  24. JRay3 says:

Circle that catch by Neil Walker, tremendous over the shoulder catch. Thankfully we have two bona fide major league ball players in Cutch and Walker.

  25. Dave G says:

Great catch by Walker, over the shoulder in shallow right field to bail the inning.

Cleveland 1, Bucs 0 after one.

  26. Playoffs by 2012 says:

WOW!! Did not see that coming!!

  27. Playoffs by 2012 says:

  28. JRay3 says:

And Pedro smacks his ninth HR of the year and was able to do so by turning on a 92 MPH fastball.

  29. Dave G says:

Way to go, Pedro! Game tied after line-drive home run to right!

  30. Dave G says:

Bucs showing better patience at the plate today. All 3 hits on 2-0 counts.

  31. JRay3 says:

Maybe had a call go our way with Walker steal….now first and third less than two outs, this is where you have to be able to produce a run!

  32. Playoffs by 2012 says:

All Jones needs to do is hit a fly ball to the outfield…….

  33. Playoffs by 2012 says:

    and he does just that.

  34. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Correct me if I’m wrong, but this is the first lead since early Tuesday, right??

  35. JRay3 says:

WIth two strikes Jones had to protect and is able to line a low pitch into RF for RBI….and the Bucs lead!

  36. Dave G says:

Jones delivers Walker for a 2-1 Pirate lead

  37. JRay3 says:

@ Playoffs – correct, first lead since 1-0 in first inning Tuesday vs. Baltimore.

McGehee having a rough afternoon, strikeout leaving two men on and now inning ending DP.

  38. Playoffs by 2012 says:

McGehee is the OFFICIAL RALLY KILLER today.

    2 – AB’s
    1 – K
    1 – GIDP
    4 – LOB

  39. T.S. says:

Drew Hutchison hurt today, third Blue Jays starting pitcher to go on the DL in a week. Neal, time to pick up the friggin’ phone and get a bat.

  40. Playoffs by 2012 says:

You think they’d do Jose Bautista for Michael McKenry?

  41. JRay3 says:

@ T.S. – I would be more than happy to give the Blue Jays a SP for Edwin Encarnacion.

  42. Mlrgenuine says:

@ Playoff – I’ll take 50 on the Over please.

  43. JRay3 says:

Wow down 0-2 Pedro draws a leadoff walk!

  44. Bizrow says:

Pedro might give us the OVAH by himself

  45. Bizrow says:

I think the Jays have some pretty good catching depth, but what do we currently have to trade?

  46. Bizrow says:

What a crappy AB by Barmes. Pedro might have to do it himself

  47. PgherinLev says:

Am I hearing things? I could have sworn one of the Pirates TV announces said the words Brad Lincoln and positive trend in the same sentence.

  48. JRay3 says:

And Casey McGehee makes amends for his earlier AB’s with two run bomb on a hanging curve ball to give the Bucs the lead back!

  49. JAL says:

Nice homer with a runner on.

  50. Playoffs by 2012 says:

@Mlr, too late for today’s line. Sorry, man.

  51. JRay3 says:

Nice job AJ to get out of that bases loaded situation, only nine outs to get back into the ‘W’ column.

  52. JRay3 says:

Alex Presley with a solo shot and Bucs lead by 3…sweet!

  53. T.S. says:

I think McHenry and a bag of balls would do the trick.

I’m with you, brother. I’d take Encarnacion in a heartbeat. Brad Lincoln, anyone?

  54. JAL says:

    6 outs to go

  55. Dave G says:

Grass is mowed. Hedges trimmed. Back for the finish of this game,

  56. JRay3 says:

Barmes – 0 for 4 with 3 K’s and 3 LOB. Hey Clint it is OK to play Jordy Mercer, I promise.

  57. JRay3 says:

Great work by Jared Hughes once again. He is quickly becoming one of my favorites with the intensity he brings and bulldog like attitude on the mound.

  58. Keith says:

Pedro officially out of slump again?

  59. Officer Mancuso says:

Playoffs, I’ll take the under for 100 now. Go Bucs!

  60. JRay3 says:

Wow Alvarez with a two HR day hitting his 10th of the year and McGehee a 4 RBI day, El Toro 3 RBI day, oh if it could just be a little more consistent.

  61. JAL says:

4 RBI for Casey and 2 homers for Pedro

  62. Officer Mancuso says:

Re 59, I don’t think so. The rap is that the only thing he can hit is the fastball, and today’s HR was a 92 mph specimen of his favorite.

  63. Officer Mancuso says:

Oh…(in best Lily Tomlin voice)…never mind.

  64. radio wave says:

    Having fun yet?

  65. Officer Mancuso says:

Let me check. Mrs. Mancuso will know.

  66. Boise Bucco says:

So have the Bucs “drawn” 8 walks today, or was the pitching really that bad?

  67. JRay3 says:

@ Boise Bucco – Early in the game I would say the Bucs did a nice job of drawing the first 4-5 walks, with better approach. Bad pitching just gave them three more in a hurry.

  68. Bizrow says:

I got two tickets for Thursday, me and AW were going to go, but due to stuff, we are not.

And two tickets for Saturday vs the Tigers, my son and family are coming in and we have seats elsewhere,

I can’t see to well right now, but with the family coming in for the weekend, I will be gabbing and playing with the grandkids, the game is secondary.

    Any lunatic interested in them?

The trouble would be getting them to you.

Thursday is in the 200 section, freebies for being a partial ticket plan person

Saturday, I could give to Tickets For Kids

You folks have first dibs, again, if we can figure out how to get them to you

  69. Officer Mancuso says:

Quite the fantasy wrecking 9’th from CLE reliever Hagadone. 1 IP 3H 4R 4ER 4BB

  70. JRay3 says:

Behind 6 2/3 strong innings of work from AJ Burnett, earning his seventh win of the year, and 12 hits including two HR’s from Pedro Alvarez the Pirates earn their first win since last Sunday 9-2 and there was nooooooooo doubt about it!

Tomorrow, in a start that I think we can classify as pretty important for Brad Lincoln. the Pirates will try to earn the series win.

  71. Officer Mancuso says:

AJ now 7-2. I know that’s a stone age stat, but in his case with what he brings somehow it seems to tell an important truth.

  72. JRay3 says:

@ Bizrow – what a nice offer, this would be a time I wish I was out that way. I certainly hope somebody is able to take advantage of the generous offer and enjoy some Bucco baseball is one of the most majestic ballparks in the land.

  73. RobertoForever says:

Wasnt Barmes 2 for 4 yesterday when the rest of the lineup looked off?

  74. RobertoForever says:

Correction, he was 2 for 4 on Thursday, when hitting didn’t matter.

DK: Have you ever actually enjoyed a victory?

  75. RobertoForever says:

That was a thoroughly good game to listen to, while walking around the Smithsonian – Natural History Museum. Great afternoon game. AJ with 6 straight wins. The veteran is the teams stopper.

Bucs can go for the series win tomorrow!

DK: Did you have a chance to check the Newseum?

It’s tremendous, one of the best I’ve ever visited, though I’m biased having spent my life in the news business.

  76. JRay3 says:

@ Roberto – Here are the stats you should be focusing on when it comes to Barmes-

.192 BA in Mid- June with 181 AB’s a LARGE sample size. An OBP of .216 and an awful SLG%. He has just three walks to go along with his 46 K’s.

Excuse me if I am not going to pay much attention to one game he goes 2-4 and fails to score a run or to drive in a run in that game you mention on Thursday.

FACTS – He is awful, and the team needs to address it. #FreeJordyMercer or #FreeAnySS

  77. twentytwo22 says:

Wow! The Pirates were the cigar store Indians today. They saw 173 pitches. Resulted in 12 hits + 8 walks. We need that approach EVERY game and it will result in many more extrabase hits.

  78. Better Days Coming says:

If you want to look at sample size I’d suggest the past four years rather than the past three months. Barmes has been bad. Horrible even. But I still would suggest that he’s going to rise to the mean at some point and the Bucs will benefit by having him in the lineup. Just as they did with Barajas.

  79. Officer Mancuso says:

I don’t believe anyone’s said “Raise the Jolly Roger,” so as one who felt we were sinking beneath the waves in Camden Yards, I’m happy to type it. At this point I have high hopes but low confidence in Alvaraez,
    Bedard and McGehee.

JMac and AJ, and AMac are the rocks. I sure hope Karstens comes back as amazingly good as he’s been the past 2 years.

    Go Bucs!

  80. JRay3 says:

Clint Barmes over the last 4 years:

    BA – .192, ,244, .235, .245 career – .249
    OBP – .216, .312, .305, .294 career – .297
    SLG – .300, .386, .351, .440 career – .395
    OPS – .520, .698, .656, .734 career – .692

Add to that he has just scored 10 runs and added 14 RBI’s this year last three year averages R- 53 and RBI 55. His current pace is to score 26 Runs and 36 RBI’s well below averages dating back the past three seasons.

For him to get back to the norm just in BA he would have to go 55-180 AB’s, a pretty tough task for a guy ho struggle to get two hits every ten AB’s.

The numbers are the numbers and we can go three months in or three years back. My opinion in all of this is we have enough to start forming analysis and it is not good. The goal each day should be to get the best players on the field, and in my opinion (and my interpretation of the numbers suggest) he is not one of them. Management sometimes has to be able to admit mistakes.

  81. RobertoForever says:

I have heard great things about the Newseum but have never visited. It is on the list as I too have some newspaper background in my college background.

First time to DC for the teens with me, so we focused on the basics – Am History and Natural History today. Yesterday the monuments and Bureau of Printing and Engraving ( The teens requested to see all the money, lol).

Based on a recommendation, we did go to the International Spy Museum and do the 1 hr cloak and dagger interactive event. VERY well done.

  82. JAL says:

More interesting things to do in DC than possible over a few days. If interesting buildings visit the National Building Museum, Spies real and fictional, the Spy Museum, intense history the Holocaust Museum, in art, several places, and on and on.

  83. Mlrgenuine says:

@Playoffs…. sorry didn’t realize it was an early start today!

  84. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Pedro alone covers the OVER in today’s game. But AJ Burnett and James McDonald only combine for 12.67 innings and the UNDER takes that one. Thanks to everyone who played. See you tomorrow.

  86. JD says:

@Roberto – Spy Museum is indeed a blast.

Wife, kids (12,14) and I went to today’s game. What a blast it was! It was especially great hearing the Lets Go Bucs chant take over the stadium after Pedro’s 2nd blast. It reminded me of sitting in Browns Stadium and hearing “Here we Go Steelers, here we Go!” take over after we’re up by 3 or 4 touchdowns. Let’s win tomorrow to remind Cleveland that we own them.

  87. Drew71 says:

There is something terribly wrong with your accounting system.

In particular, there is something terribly wrong at -230.

Well. If not wrong, at least scary.

    Brrrrrrrrr. Scary.

  88. twentytwo22 says:

One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest on AMC dialogue
Nicholson: “I’m going to put a bug so far up her *blank* she isn’t going to know whether to *blank* or wind her wristwatch.”

Mike Lange: “He doesn’t know whether to cry or wind his watch.”

    That was news to me.

    DK: Wow, seriously? Me, too.

  89. John Lease says:

Great win. Now, let’s see if Lincoln is ever going to be a starter today. I didn’t like them tacking on 4 runs when it was over in the ninth. Save those runs for today!

  90. Drew71 says:

    Thanks Dad.

  91. RobertoForever says:

    Great tips for DC. Thanks.

@JD – Love it when Pittsburgh dominates Cleveland!! Thanks for representing!
