Site: PNC Park

TV, radio: Root Sports, 93.7 The Fan

Here is the live box score.

And here is the Pirates’ lineup vs. Minnesota LHP Francisco Liriano

  1. Jose Tabata, LF
  2. Josh Harrison, RF
  3. Andrew McCutchen, CF
  4. Casey McGehee, 1B
  5. Neil Walker, 2B
  6. Pedro Alvarez, 3B
  7. Clint Barmes, SS
  8. Michael McKenry, C
  9. Erik Bedard, LHP

  1. TJA says:

like this line-up card…same as last night except for “fort mckenry”. pirate bats are as hot as the weather!

  2. JAL says:

Will it the Liriano of his last 4 starts (good) or his earlier starts (bad) ?

  3. bob hasis says:

I’m such a hopeless junkie, I just watched the replay of last night’s game on ROOT. We won again!

One observation I can make is Harrison amped up the pulse and the atmosphere in this game. There was an energy we should have every game.

He needs greater consideration from CH, even if it bothers some people/players.

He stole two bases and would have had three but that inconsiderate Cutch had to go and homer.

  4. JAL says:

    Bob H

Amazing how things never change in those replays :)

  5. Baywatch says:

Update from Bradenton where the Young Bucs – Gulf Coast League Pirates – are back to their big bat ways, just finishing up an 11-4 win over the Tigers. Our second-rounder Wyatt Mathisen went 3-4 with 2 RBIs, including a base-loaded walk. He came around the same inning when Jesus Vasquez hit a grand slam.

Stetson Allie did not play today. All the pitchers used were serviceable except for Neverauskas, who gave up two runs in three innings, and also walked 5.

  6. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Here’s a video I just posted in the last blog to kinda show what I was talking about from the SS position. Not trying to ridicule your techniques, just once you get above a certain level, every little step increases the odds of a safe/out call.

  7. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Here’s another one. This video is quit awesome actually and some terms used are ones that you hear at a higher level.

  8. LuckyNKentucky says:

Great news, Bay. Allie was hitless yesterday and had a K, but still encouraging news from there.

  9. Playoffs by 2012 says:

  10. Hey. i think Tabata needs a few days to get his head straight. why not put Harrison in left and give Jones a try against his old team?

  11. JRay3 says:

A great chance for the Bucs to win their fourth consecutive for the third time this year. Facing another LHP (the Bucs have only lost one time in games started by lefties) in Liriano. In his three starts in the month of June, Liriano has not pitched more than 6 innings, and has 8 walks in his 17.2 IP. He does have 20 K’s this month as well. Hopefully these streaky hitting Pirates display a little patience this evening in getting their pitch and making Liriano work.

@ Bob – could not agree more on your assessment of Harrison, he is just a little spark plug and injects energy into the lineup.

And where are you @ playoffs, I took a beating from the window last night and am sitting at the Denver airport about to board a flight back home and need to rebound from yesterday.

    Let’s Go Bucs!

  12. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    100 on the UNDER Playoffs

  13. buggee says:

@PLAYOFFs, put me down for 100 OVER please

  14. crkkid says:

@ Playoffs…put me down for 50 units on the under, please. Very interesting o/u.

I think the o/u goes to 11….I don’t think Liriano gets out of the 6th today.

  15. JRay3 says:

@ Playoffs – spoke to soon. OK will quickly try and tackle this number after the window foiled me yesterday.

In 57.2 IP this year, Liriano has 36 BB’s and 59 K’s. In the month of June he has pitched 17.2 IP in three starts and has 8 BB’s to go with 20 K’s. His numbers suggest he is a K an inning pitcher. His control problems have peaked a bit of late with 4 BB’s,. and 3 BB’s in his last two performances. Liriano is probably a safe bet to pitch 6 innings with at least 6 K’s and 2-3 BB’s.

Now Pirates hitting has 539 K’s in 66 GP this year to go with 158 BB’s. On average the Bucs strike out 8.16 times a game and walk 2.39 times a game for a per game average of 10.55. In their past five games however the Bucs have gone: 4-2, 3-6, 8-9, 3-10, 1-7, 2-11, 3-8 (BB-K). Going over the number in three of their past seven games but increasing their BB per game to a recent avg. of 3 per game.

A tight number this evening, but a strikeout pitcher with recent control problems facing a Bucs team taking more walks of late leads me to a play on the OVER for 75.

    Thanks and go Bucs!

  16. bman says:

I’ll take 55 on the UNDER

  17. tmp444 says:

Very tight line tonight, playoffs. And JRay’s stats show that it is as accurate as anything to post at 11.5.

Seeing as I’m just barely over the EVEN mark, we’ll go low tonight at put 20 on the UNDER….4 walks, 6 Ks.

  18. JohninOshkosh says:

    Tonight’s Twins lineup:

#MNTwins lineup vs #Pirates: Span CF, Revere RF, Willingham LF, Morneau 1B, Plouffe 3B, Dozier SS, Carroll 2B, Butera C & Liriano LHP

  19. nate83 says:

    50 on the under. Thanks.

  20. Milo Hamilton says:

Clint Hurdle says that Brad Lincoln will start Saturday. SMH.

  21. Evan says:

Tough line… 30 on the under please.

  22. JohninOshkosh says:

There was a time when Francisco Liriano was coveted by many well regarded baseball minds. Hope JAL is right and Bad Liriano shows up tonight.

Lets sweep these guys and send them back to Minnesota where none of the walleyes, perch or pike are biting because its just too damn hot in these parts.

  23. JaxBuc says:

It’s hard to make a big move only wagering 20 to 50 units per night, but I’m trying to play the role of the turtle while others are clearly happy being the rabbits. That said, give me a wager of 30 units on the UNDER, for tonight.

  24. NMR says:

@Milo – Brink hinted at VandenHurk today in his beat. I thought you tipped him off. Or maybe…

  25. OZ says:

Liriano on the bump tonite…….100 on the over window! Thx

  26. Boise Bucco says:

I’m gonna put some thought into today’s wager…

Over the past 4 games, the Bucs have had a combined 13, 14, 9, and 6 BB/K’s, for a 10.5 BB/K/9 rate. The high-rate games were the 2-0 game against Justin Masterson, and the next day against Ubaldo Jimenez. The 6 was yesterday against Scott Diamond, whose rate this year is at 6.1–right about where he had the Bucs.

Today’s starter, Francisco Liriano, is another high-K/high-BB pitcher–he is combining for a 14.8 K/BB/9 this year, and for his career he sits at 12.7. I think his rate this year might be a little inflated because of his 5 relief appearances this year…but I could be wrong. I don’t have individual game stats right in front of me.

So, in the face off all these stats, I think I’m just gonna go with my gut here and go with the “UNDER” for my wager today. It feels weird not being in the negative anyway.

So, if you could, put me down for 50 on the UNDER please!

  27. Playoffs by 2012 says:

@Ryan, you got it and good luck!!

    Go Bucs!

  29. AJS says:

–Hey. i think Tabata needs a few days to get his head straight. why not put Harrison in left and give Jones a try against his old team?

    LHP = no Jones. Ever.

  30. bob hasis says:

A huge thanks for the video. I responded in the last blog from yesterday. Your video supports my position quite well. Again thanks.

  31. Kevin says:

    Playoffs –

Put me down for 75 on the UNDER, please.

  32. manny _sanguine says:

    @playoffs – 50 on the under pls

  33. SlackBoss says:

@ playoffs – JRay3 has it nailed – over for the full monty – 100

  34. bob hasis says:

I just watched your second video. Thanks it was as you said even more detailed.

I do hope Groat and any others who have dissented will at least watch the proper way of playing short and throwing the ball

  35. radio wave says:

    At playoffs:
This is follow the leader’s advice, give me 70 on the over.

  36. Evan says:

ESPN is doing a battle of the ballparks and our top rated PNC is facing the evil stadium in Milwaukee. Do the right thing and vote against the dark places and vote for our gem! ttp://

  37. DemonDachshund says:

    @playoffs – 80 on the OVER please.

  38. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I have no idea how that supports your position. Please explain? There’s nothing about a plant and throw.

  39. Bizrow says:

    Playoff, 50 on the UNDAH

Thanks, once again, you are the best

  40. Milo Hamilton says:

MLB has informed the Pirates that Bill Virdon & Bill Mazeroski aren’t permitted in the dugout during games. OK, then I want every other straggler on every other bench treated the same way. Does Dusty Baker still have a 3 year old nearly getting run over at home plate ?

  42. Thanks for the link Evan. Voted for PNC all the way.

  43. @Playoffs, I’ll go 50 on the UNDER for tonight. Thanks.

  44. @Milo, I’m pretty sure they would allow any of those old Yankees and Red Sox, or Brewers to be in the dugouts. They’re still mad that Maz got in the Hall, so they don’t want him around. They were wearing uniforms and blended right in, so I don’t see the harm. Are they going to stop letting the minor league coaches from getting a look see at the Show later on in the season?

  45. Bizrow says:

Well, what would one expect from the budmeister?

    Tie games?

    Poor drug testing criteria?

Having those two guys in the dugout and in uniform had no negative impact on the game.

Budmeister likes to micromanage, its not like when Charlie Finley wanted to raffle off “Manager of the game”

This is the guy that recommended Slick Frank,

    Just sayin

    bud and Slick must go

  46. Chico says:

    @playoffs – 40 on the under, please!

  48. Bizrow says:

The Yankees got permission for BILLY CRYSTAL to hit in a spring training game for goodness sakes

Now, two stellar, popular idols of a franchise are not allowed?

Ok, I’m done, guess they were stealing signs or something.

Hey bud, how about dealing with competitive balance, teaching folks about the rights and wrongs regarding legal control of body fluids when taking drug samples and not catering to the big markets?

  49. cosmo says:

Let me have 75 on the under please.

  50. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Where did you guys see that MLB won’t allow Maz and Virdon in the dugout?

  51. MarkV says:

I’ll take 25 on the UNDER. Thanks!

  52. bob hasis says:

They went out of their way to explain the proper footwork, to be balanced, to field the ball, to get into the “throwing circle”, then step and throw.

Did they use the same terminology as I have. Maybe not. But a picture – your video – is worth a thousand words. When I learned the game, just as the video emphasizes, get set, be balanced, field the ball correctly, then step and throw. Did you not see the step with the front leg, which means the back leg is planted, then the throw.

Are you implying to me you don’t understand your own video evidence?

And nowhere did I see in those two videos where they said to throw off of the wrong foot

  53. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I don’t know what you are referring to as far as throwing off the wrong foot. Don’t think I’ve ever said that.

I know exactly what the video’s implied.

Footwork is key to the throw, from any position. The way the described it I have also heard it referenced as “gaining ground.” Not a term that I use or even like, hence the throw through it.

Those were also routine plays. On a softer roller then, they won’t have to set themselves. SS’s more times than not must charge the ball, except for seeds of course. Many of middle infielders take extra steps after the throw as well, in a continuation of the “throwing through” concept that I use and refer to.

Body position and footwork is the key though.

  54. NMR says:

Not gonna bite on the Chapman story?

The other paper has a lot more detail. She now claims she was robbed in the CVS Downtown, gave said robber her room number when demanded, and then went back to said room until said robber came in, tied her up, and stole all his jewelery.

    Um, what?

  55. Milo Hamilton says:

All I know is this, MLB had better have a close eye on this clown. Too many shady characters around this guy. Not to mention the shadiest of all, Castro. Barmes & McKenry ? OK.

  56. Mlrgenuine says:

    @ Playoffs

I hate when my pick for the over/under seems like I am picking against the Bucs.

I’ll go 25 on the Over please.

    Lets Go Bucs!

  57. Playoffs by 2012 says:

@cosmo, you got it and good luck!!
@MarkV, you got it and good luck!!
@Mlr, you got it and good luck!!

  58. JAL says:

had a feeling there more to that Chapman story that was reported at first, made no sense to me. Still think there is more to come.

  59. pattonbb says:

Playoffs – can I get 100 on the under?

  60. Milo Hamilton says:

I’ll go with 75 on the under. Thanks.

  61. NMR says:

Cinci paper is making it out to be a crazy girlfriend story. Ain’t that the truth.

The police report threw me off when they only arrested her for lying and not theft.

  62. NMR says:

    20 on the under, please.

  63. Milo Hamilton says:

Don’t you think MLB needs to be concerned with the gambling angle in regards to Chapman ?

  64. Arriba Wilver says:

Playoffs — I’ll take 50 on the over.

  65. JohninOshkosh says:

    Long 1st inning for Bedard.

  66. JohninOshkosh says:

The NHL Award show is pretty Hollywood. Looks fun.

  67. JAL says:

Long first aided by a popup McKenry should have caught.

  68. JohninOshkosh says:

Award show banter is just brutal. Painful.

  69. Milo Hamilton says:

Is all access night super annoying all the time, or just when we’re losing ?

  70. JohninOshkosh says:

I think I saw Dejan at that Marquee Nightclub footage in the Cosmopolitan. :-)

  71. JD says:

Hey Osh Kosh, award shows in general are brutal.

  72. JD says:

Milo – they are especially annoying when sitting at a BW3 with no sound. Tonight I’m in Ohio. I had them change a screen from Reds-Indians for me.

  73. JohninOshkosh says:

True that, JD! They woul be a blast to ridicule in person, though.

  74. Milo Hamilton says:

Big BW3 fan here. You seem to be getting closer to Pittsburgh.

  75. nate83 says:

Does anybody know the score. I’m stuck at work and have no access to any websites that show scores. Thanks.

  76. Milo Hamilton says:

It’s 1-0 Twins going to the 4th. We’ll keep you updated.

  77. Officer Mancuso says:

    Good to see Bedard rocking.

  78. Milo Hamilton says:

Gerrit Cole through 3 perfect innings in his 1st Altoona start.

  79. JRay3 says:

After a rocky first Bedard has settled in nicely retiring ten of the last eleven batters and spotting his pitches very well. Just need the offense to figure out Liriano second time through the lineup now.

  80. Officer Mancuso says:

Or at least not tanking. 63 pitches but only 2 h, 2bb, 1 r through 3.2. Lots of pitches. Comes with the 4k, I guess.

  81. Milo Hamilton says:

Pirates come to bat in the 4th trailing 1-0.

  82. nate83 says:

Thanks Milo. I appreciate it. It’s a silver lining in an otherwise unexpected busy day that has ended with me working a lot more hours then I had planned.

  83. Officer Mancuso says:

    @Milo re #80 yes!

  84. JohninOshkosh says:

No way the Twinkees win this 1-0.

  85. Officer Mancuso says:

Harrison, Cutch, McGehee, Walker, Alvarez is some tough real estate for opposing pitchers based on recent performance. Also, based on my most recent coin flip, everything always comes up heads.

  86. Milo Hamilton says:

1-0 Twins through 4. Harrison & McGehee singles are the only Pirates hits against a suddenly decent Francisco Liriano.

  87. JRay3 says:

Good news in Cleveland…the Indians take an early 5-0 lead on the Reds.

    Now let’s get some runs!

  88. Milo Hamilton says:

Half way home, still 1-0 Minnesota. 85 pitches for Bedard through 5.

  89. JAL says:

Not Suddenly decent–3/04 ERA last 4 starts and only gave up one hit to Brewers last start in 6 innings.

  90. Milo Hamilton says:

Still 1-0 after 5. Pretty poor effort so far against a pitcher who just refused a demotion to the minors. Looking like the Jake Arrieta game last week.

  91. nate83 says:

Milo, thanks for the updates again.

I’m calling it a night and just coming in early in the morning.

  92. Officer Mancuso says:

Bedard has pitched an excellent 6 innings. I wasn’t sure he was still up to it. He was. Need bats.

  93. Eric Bowser says:

That was not a 2-strike swing by McGehee, ugh.

  94. Hey JohninOshkosh and everyone else, I finally loaded the photos from our two days in Baltimore. Here are two links:

The photo of my daughter (now 5 years old today) during the game:
She apears to be praying, but I think she was just wishing for something good to happen as the Bucs were down 10 or 11 to 3 at the time.

    The full amount of photos:

  95. Milo Hamilton says:

Liriano came in averaging 5.6 walks per 9 as we routinely swing at pitches on the ground. No walks tonight.

  96. Eric Bowser says:

Evgeni Malkin wins Hart Trophy (MVP)!!!!

  97. Typical game with very large ERA guy shutting us down, but Liriano has done this to this team before, so it really isn’t unusual. It just sucks that they can’t have some better at bats against him.

  98. Milo Hamilton says:

Make him bring the ball up !!

  99. twentytwo22 says:

Pathetic approach all night. Walker 1-1 swung at two pitches down and out of the zone. A pitcher like Liriano, you have to have faith that his low pitches will sink out of the zone. Even if he throws a strike or two you can’t waver in your gameplan. I hope they win. They only need 2 runs. Immature performance so far.

  100. We need a base hit Fort!!

  101. Eric Bowser says:

When Pirates don’t stay to the plan, are the coaches just this stupid to not pull the whole team in and get them to wake up and follow the plan? This game is really bad from an approach perspective.

  102. Milo Hamilton says:

    Awesome photos.

  103. Sac fly at least Rod!

  104. Thanks Milo.

I’ll take a walk too, Rod!!

  105. Officer Mancuso says:

Uh oh. Bases loaded one out.

  106. Eric Bowser says:

    That’s defense!

    game tied 1-1 though.

  107. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Smart pitching around Alvarez by hitting him. Another effective way to “Adam Laroche’ a hitter. Walk or hit the guys who can do any damage.

Are Presley and Jones hurt? I havent been able to listen to the games lately and can only track the box scores. I’m wondering why Jermaine Allensworth, oops I mean the guy who isn’t even as good as he was, Jose Tabata keeps playing everyday. Heck I’d even rather see Mercer or McKenry in his spot.

  108. On my feet clapping for the run and that catch. You got to give it to him. I thought that was a gap shot at least. Dang! 1-1- though.

  109. Milo Hamilton says:

Good work by the pinch hitters tonight, a hit and a sac fly. Advantage of watching what Liriano has been doing to the hitters.

  110. JRay3 says:

Barajas gets the job done with Sac Fly that easily could have been a double and multiple RBI’s. New game and Liriano chased.

  111. bob hasis says:

I know CH told Presley to get a bat and pinch-hit for Tabata, I guess Presley didn’t feel like it

  112. JohninOshkosh says:

Sorry, I had to deal with some work. Thanks for sharing the photos. Those ships look magnificent! It’s crazy stupid how close those jets fly to each other, too! Looks like a great event. Nice family. Happy Birthday to your daughter! She lucked out with a June 20 birthday. On a lot years it falls on a very cool day, the Summer Solstice, and she will never have to go to school on her birthday! Thanks, again. Too bad the Buccos did not cooperate!

  113. Burnt Grilled Cheese when we could have had more the bottom of the inning. 2-1 not us.

  114. Eric Bowser says:

Ticks me off to see a reliever have a Maholm inning.

Just can’t give up the go-ahead run after your teammates battle back to tie game.

  115. DemonDachshund says:

@Pig Legs – Lefty starters the last 2 nights for Jones not playing, might be the explanation for Presley too.

  116. @John, thanks. The other cool thing is that her birthday sometimes also falls on Father’s Day. Happened a couple years ago when she turned three. We went home to the Burgh for it, and celebrated by inviting about 15-17 family and friends to come out to the Bucs game that day. Good thing is that they won the game 5-3 over the Indians and made us all happy.

  117. pattonbb says:

I guess Grilli actually is human after all. I was beginning to have my doubts.

  118. Must have used all the runs and hits up last night. Need at least one more to tie it up, though. Come on Casey!

  119. Milo Hamilton says:

I guess trying to steal there made no sense. SMH.

  120. Walker swinging at everything low and out of the zone. Helping the pitcher too much. And stares at strike three.

  121. Milo Hamilton says:

On the telecast they say that Josh Bell “has resumed light baseball activities”. Same could be said of Tabata I suppose.

  122. JD says:

Osh Kosh – heckling award shows would be fun. Especially the AVN awards.

Milo – yep, closer to Pittsburgh. In Dayton tonight. Unfortunately I live in Toledo now. Only make it back a few times a year.

  123. Cole pitched 5 innings of 5 hit 2 run ball and the Curve have him in line for the win with an 8-2 lead after 5 innings.

  124. Barmes back to not bunting properly.

  125. The word of the day boys and girls is “undisciplined.”

  126. Milo Hamilton says:

  127. bman says:

Wow, @playoffs has these lines pegged; currently at 11 (3 BB, 8 K) with 2 outs in the ninth

  128. Boise Bucco says:

After that Barmes K, we were right at the wager threshold…

  129. bman says:

And the line goes OVER on the last pitch of the game – UGH!

  130. And with that K, the OVER barely wins. Josh Willingham beats the Bucs tonight on his 2 out 0-2 double in the first that eventually had him score the first run. The homerun and Span’s catch sealed the loss. Hopefully we don’t lay down for the 7+ ERA guy the Twins will throw tomorrow night. Need the series win. At least Cincy lost, so we stay 2.5 out of first. 1 up on the Cardinals, and now 1.5 out of the 2nd wild card spot.

  131. Chuck H says:

That was another game we should have won. Mr. Barmes doesn’t even know how to bunt. All we needed was one run to tie, two to win, but alas, we still need hitters to improve our position. Smart move, putting a pinch runner in for Alverez, but no one was able to move him around. Maybe the guys will find their bats for tomorrow”s game.

  132. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Well, the OVER wins in an absolute squeaker. Too bad it was in the final at bat. Thank you to everyone who played. See you tomorrow.

  133. bob hasis says:

    I like an would like an explanation;

    1. Why did CH pinch run with Mercer for Pedro
    2. Why didn’t Mercer pinch hit for the freakin Barmes who can’t yet bunt
    3. Why didn’t Presley pinch-hit for Tabata with a runner on second against a right-handed pitcher.
    4. Why did Presley pinch-hit for Harrison
5 When Barajas liner into left-center was miraculously caught, why didn’t Barmes who was on second, tag up and make it to third as our run was scoring.

These are questions that should have CH a little closer to needing his resume updated.
Forget about Leyva he’ll be gone anyway, but shouldn’t he be giving a directive to Barmes – who always seems in need of such on that miracle catch. If it isn’t caught he could have strolled in from second.

How do you continually pencil Tabata and Barmes into the line-up in good conscience?

  134. JRay3 says:

Well certainly a disappointing loss this evening, not many chances tonight against a very tough Liriano who looked like the pitcher from his pre-surgery days. Barajas gets robbed and Span’s catch was a run and game saver for the Twins, and boy they have a speedy OF.

Nice bounce back for Bedard so that is at least encouraging. Big game tomorrow as we absolutely have to take the series from the Twins, also a chance to gain a half game on the idle Reds.

@ Playoffs – I said earlier today your line was super tight and you were spot on just glad to be on the right side!

  135. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Well ain’t that OVER bummer……….
