Looking ahead to first pitch …
Game: Pirates (36-32) vs. Detroit Tigers (34-35)
Time: 7:05 p.m.
Site: PNC Park
TV, radio: Root Sports, 93.7 The Fan
Here is the live box score.
And here is the Pirates’ lineup vs. Detroit RHP Doug Fister …
- Alex Presley, LF
- Neil Walker, 2B
- Andrew McCutchen, CF
- Garrett Jones, RF
- Casey McGehee, 1B
- Pedro Alvarez, 3B
- Rod Barajas, C
- Clint Barmes, SS
- A.J. Burnett, RHP

Barmes needs to get on track…One of you said awhile back if he ends up for the year hitting .230 or something crappy like that it would mean he would have to hit .280 from here on in………….Let’s get it moving…………Or why not let Harrison play….or Mercer………….???????????????……………Go Bucs…….
Where is Harrison? I love how hurdle has turned the mentality of this team around, but he does make some puzzling personnel decisions. His love affair with Barmes must end. How do they know Harrison is only a utility player if they don’t give him an everyday chance? They thought Walker and Sanchez were role guys too. At least Tabata is not playing over Presley.
Honestly, Tabby and Presley are interchangeable.
This is the best run producing lineup available. J-hay needed a break, he’ll probably be back in there somewhere tomorrow.
Time to explain the deal with Mercer. Not suggesting he takes over at SS for Barmes, he’s coming around, but 2.3 starts a week to relieve Barmes, would make sense.
This series is going to be very interesting for the Bucs. They Tigers lineup is too good to have the record that they have and has a lot of power in it.
Let’s see how it goes….Fister is not an easy opponent.
Good to see Tabata is not starting again tonight. We are a far better team without his sulking ways and “I’m afraid I’ll get hurt” attitude in the lineup.
It’s time to “strap it on” our good friend Jim Leyland and his team – we have a good shot tonight with this lineup. Let’s hope Pedro has a big Series.
Gunner,
Don’t forget to say “Plenty of good seats still available” right before the game tonight. I think you forgot it last night. Your namesake would never have missed that.
Would really help this team immensely if either Presley or Tabata could get going or get hot in the lead off spot. Certainly appreciate the effort Harrison gave the past three nights in RF/SS, at the plate and with his legs. Hope Clint does utilize him some more.
Barmes plain and simple needs to pick it up, I stated a few days ago he would need to go 55 for 180 in his AB’s or .305 to get to his career BA totals. He needs to be a consistent contributor or this team must not be afraid to give Harrison and/or Mercer a few starts a week. Clint has sat down Jones, McGehee, Tabata, Presley, Alvarez for extended periods but has been shy to do so with Barmes, at this stage where the race is heating up it has to be about play on the field.
I think tonight is a very important game in this series with Burnett on the mound. Looking ahead to the next two games we have Lincoln and Correia going against Scherzer and Verlander and might be lucky to get a split. Need to win tonight.
Every time I see Barmes name in the starting line-up, I go into a funk. What will he provide to the team in this series – absolutely nothing. And CH has removed the spark plug from the engine – that would be JHay.
Wait til’ Verlander gets at him on Sunday.
This is a huge series to us; two out of three from these guys would be very important, while Cincy is sweeping the Twins.
Time for the window’s THREE PLAY FRIDAY!! Let’s open the window!!

Clint Barmes is hitting better lately but Harrison should be getting the majority of playing time.
Harrison is much better run producer . His XBH% is higher. His SO% is lower. His AB/RBI rate is much better. He puts balls in play at a better rate (79% to Barmes 70% in 2012). The numbers that matter to a lineup are much better. Not to mention that he’s hitting .278 in May and June (well above Barmes).
I think it’s time for the Pirates to settle in on a lineup vs. RH and vs. LH. And that would then settle the utility spots as well. A lot depends on what TRADES wlll be executed as it is obvious Clint and NH have had their meeting where they have defined the acquisition targets.
Seems to me with both Casey McG and GI Jones picking it up in June that we have a basic platoon of Tabby and The King… this mirrors what would happen if the Bucs were to acquire, say, Josh Willingham to play right field.
The only other real decision point is whether they are going to just go with Barmes or make a bold move and plug in Jay Hey, Mercer or a bold acquisition like a Jed Lowrie to play SS. I think they are going to give him the next 2 weeks to either play himself into or out of that spot.
No real issues with JayHey being a utility player because on a GOOD TEAM (and the Bucs are becoming one of those), he really isn’t much more than that.
I think it might be time for Hague and Mercer to go to Indy and to pick up real bench pieces for a playoff run.. need some experience and versatility and those two offer neither of those.
@Playoffs:
I dig the Three Play Friday. Its like when they have 2 Daily Doubles at the track.

Thanks, Playoffs. Puts a lot of fun into watching the games. Even though its been pretty fun watching them in the first place this year.
Playoffs:
Line 1: OVER, 100
Line 2: OVER, 100
Line 3: OVER, 100
Thank you sir and everyone have a fine safe feckless weekend and…
go BUCS
@ LuckyNKentucky #6
Lucky
You are correct. Plenty of good seats still available was one of his favorite phrases. It has been 37 years since we last listened to the real Gunner on a full time basis. I still riled up when I think about what Westinghouse did to him and Nellie King.
We need to resurrect the Green Weenie and aim it at Verlander on Sunday just like the Gunner used to aim it at Don Drysdale, the great Dodger pitcher. Supposedly, Drysdale was really upset at the Gunner and his Green Weenie antics.
@ Playoffs – Three play Friday back in action and there are some interesting lines being tossed out. Here we go:
Line 1 – Boy this is a tough line as there really is no rhyme or reason in trying to find an angle. The Bucs in their past 6 games have left 7+ men on base four times, however in their last series versus the Tiger they only left 7+ on in one of the three games. Doug Fister who throws for the Tigers tonight has not had a game where the opposition has left 7+ on base since May 17th against the Twins when they stranded 9. His last three starts have seen 5,6,4 LOB.
Tough number to play so I will limp in on this one with 20 on the OVER
Line 2 – The two guys that hopefully the Pirates pitchers are smart enough to not let beat them. Diving into their numbers indicates a little surprise to me. Cabrera on the year has 14 HR’s in 280 AB’s. He is hitting one every 20 AB’s. He has just one HR in his last 10 games and has gone four consecutive without hitting one. Fielder (A Pirate killer) has hit 11 HR’s in 259 AB’s, or one every 23.5 AB’s. He, too, has hit just one in his last ten games but his came in the Tigers last game yesterday versus the Cardinals. The numbers would indicate based on the amount of bats they get this series they each hit one.
Now with the Bucs you have Lincoln who has given up 4 HR’s in his last 3 starts, Correia who has given up a team high 12 HR’s including four starts where has given up two and Burnett who has given up six on the year including two last start after going four consecutive starts without allowing a HR.
I will play the trends of the hitters on this one and go 80 on the UNDER.
Line 3 – The Bucs are playing some really good ball right now and have rebounded nicely from their trip to Baltimore (the last time both Lincoln and Correia pitched in the same series) by winning 4 of their last 6. Verlander one hit the Bucs earlier in the season so it is tough to imagine a win in that game. Putting faith in Lincoln at this point as a starter is also a scary proposition making tonight a virtual must win to have thoughts of taking the series.
I will gladly accept being proven wrong here but I do not like the match up and will go 60 on the UNDER
@ playoffs – also not like I am competitive or anything (or that I really would like that hat) but Slack Boss who is nipping on my heels I believe would be at 585 after last night?
Mr. Playoffs. I would like 25 units on the following;
Line 1 OVER
Line 2 UNDER
Line 3 UNDER
Thank you!
@cmat0829 #13
With all due respect, Barmes has already played himself out of the lineup; perhaps you haven’t noticed. He does nothing that this team needs, that others don’t do much easier and more often.
@Jray, from what the window has in it’s records, Slack was at 735 going into last night, he had a net loss of 50 units, dropping him to 685, if someone can back up the window’s math it is appreciated, the window admits it makes mistakes
Heredia, Taillon, and Cole:
“The Firm”
@Playoffs
30 on the over for line 1, 100 on the under for 2, and 100 on the over for line 3. I just can’t bet against the Buccos winning a series
Bob Hasis:
Fair enough. It’s tough to argue Barmes has been a positive for the Pirates this season. Not sure he still isn’t the best defensive option and with the Pirates brand of baseball, dependable defense is critical. That said, JayHey has surprised me a lot by his defense at shortstop…not sure if that would hold over the long run and at least for now the Pirates coaches seem to doubt that. I have to say I do tend to wish JayHey would get more time at SS (I do NOT believe Mercer is any where near ready to be a starting MLB shortstop so to me he isn’t an option)….. but with his bat picking up I think Clint Hurdle is giving him a chance to either keep it going (and earn the spot) or cool off (and earn the bench).

@playoffs – love the idea of two lines on Thursday -
I will go line 1 – over for 75
Line 2 – under for 75
You might want to consider an exacta sometime – these will both be close tonight.
Let’s go Bucs!
I copy/pasted from yesterday and had net loss of (150) on 75 and 75….thanks and we all appreciate all the effort you put into this!
Remember Drew Sutton? He’s available again! Seems his hot start flamed out.
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/06/rays-designate-drew-sutton-for-assignment.html
The Rays designated infielder Drew Sutton for assignment, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune tweets.
Now, maybe the whole Sutton situation can be put to rest.
@Jray,
The window thanks you, as that was some brutal book-keeping and accounting on the window’s behalf. Thank you. The window wrote down an incorrect wager. It has been updated in the book, and will be reflected in tonight’s final total. Thank you again for catching that.
I believe DK called it a few weeks ago….Drew Sutton will be the Player To Be Named Later in the trade. Basically he’s going to be traded for himself.
Ralph,
Roberto F. will be all over that.
Gunner, (#16)
Sounds great. I had one of those for many years, but it finally fell apart. We could point it at Ryan Braun from all over the country.
Will this weekend be the last time we see Leyland in uniform in Pittsburgh?
I’m getting tired of the same conversation every day. barmes vs JHay vs mercer
tabata vs everyone not named McCutchen
Tomorrow we get to rehash lincoln as a starter again
Yawn. I think it is time to kick back and enjoy the ride until some real news happens around this team
Likely going to be a low scoring affair tonight and, in such an environment, having Barmes playing SS behind Burnett makes more sense than having Harrison back there.
Playoffs –
Put me down for 75 on the over for Pirates LOB tonight
And 75 on the under for HR by Cabrera and Fielder
Please and thank you
@AJS
Obviously by “real news” you mean the imminent (OK, possible) return of the prodigal utility man – Drew Sutton.
Line 1: 40 on the over
Line 2: 100 on the under
Line 3: 40 on the over
Thanks.
@ AJS–
Thank you for your post (#30). I was just about to write: when did this blog turn into whiner’s anonymous? Every day it’s a repository for the same droning demands on personnel and that’s just sad.
Definitely time for all to understand and believe that this team is good… with the potential to win a good deal more than last year.
Something special going on with this group… and it’s only going to get better. Hurdle’s the right man, in the right place at the right time and these guys are coming around to him. They’re starting to think they can win, even after a completely awful 4-day stretch of road losses at Balt and Cleve.
Playoffs – The window is getting pretty brutal. No easy lines today.
Line 1 – I don’t like this one at all, but lets put 50 on the UNDER.
Line 2 – Can’t see these guys getting much to hit. Another 50 on the UNDER.
Line 3 – Don’t like these pitching match ups at all. Tonight might be the best chance for a win. 75 on the UNDER. Hope I lose this one.
Thanks for keeping this going. If you ever need a break from the window, I’m sure several of us would be more than willing to sit behind the glass for you.
@Kevin, you got it and good luck!!
@Nate, you got it and good luck!!
@pattonbb, thanks for the offer, but the window (for now) is strong like bull, for the game tonight, you got it and good luck!!
Just saw the lineup, why isn’t Harrison starting at shortstop ?

It is time – right now – to find out if JHay is to be trusted with the SS position. Throw him out there. One thing you can rely upon, is he will hustle his butt off, in the field and on the bases. And I will take his arm against that of Barmes all day long.
He seems to have a good idea which pitches to swing at and which ones to let go for a ball.
He brings an energy that no one except Cutch, Presley and The Fort bring.
He has greater range than Barmes because he is quicker. Will he make ALL of the routine plays that must be made – LET US FIND OUT! Will he work well with Walker, LET US FIND OUT!
Perhaps it is JHay that needs the chance to be successful, or play himself out of the lineup
@ JRay3 & playoffs – I haven’t even made a wager yet and I am down 100! – lmao
glad you caught the error.
as for tonight’s lines:
#1 – 50 UNDER
#2 – I have them hitting 3, but with both Lincoln and Correia – I am think I will second guess myself and go 50 OVER
#3 – 50 UNDER – taking a chance at regressing to the mean…
@Playoffs
Hoping for some 2-out lightning tonight. Please sir, may I have 55 undefined units on the UNDER for line 1.
Traveling the next two weeks. I hope to be able to check in with all of you a few times, but not sure how well that will work out.

Oh, if when I get back on July 9 (the All-Star) break, you all have figured everything out and Lincoln is back in the pen, Tabata is in Indy, Barmes is on the bench, Mercer and Marte are everyday players and the Buccos are in first place, then I might just decide to go back to full-time lurking.
All the best!

3. 50 on the over, why not?
@Bob
For your energy, J-Hay brings something different. I don’t see any energy coming from Presley at all. Actually, I’d say he’s the only one (JH) that shows his emotions or energy. I wouldn’t even call Cutch or Fort an energy setter. Cutch brings energy, but doesn’t seem to show it to me.
As far as Barmes, from what he’s been doing this June so far, he’s getting the majority of the AB’s at SS.
Something needs to happen with Mercer though, give him a start or two a week or send him down………ridiculous mismangement on the CH’s part. I dont think NH has much to say about the lineup, this isn’t JR managing.
Double for Presley to lead off the first
Walker promptly drives him home with a single
1st two hitters produce a run
For the month of June, Barmes and J-Hay are batting .280. Barmes with more HR’s (3) RBI’s and JH with a higher OPS.
Apples and Apples people. I’m going with the experience of Barmes over moving JH to an everyday SS position. Use JH as a super-utility guy all CH wants, but not as an everyday SS.
Walker to second on a wild pitch
Liking the start of this one so far…..
Single for Cutch. First and third no outs
Walker scores on Jones double play grounder. 2-0, 2 outs
Bucs up 2-0 after one.
@Ryan,
#62 makes perfect sense.
@Roberto
Thanks. Granted, Barmes has more AB’s than JH and I was actually surprised to see JH’s average at .280. I thought it would’ve been higher but I guess only hitting as of the last few games.
Awesome sliding catch by Presley for third out of top of second.
I admit, I’m still not a Presley fan……….but, I can appreciate what he can bring/do to the game.
Leadoff hit for Pedro in bottom of second
Barajas singles. 5th Pirate hit already. First and second, no outs…
They just flashed up this great stat:
Barajas batting .333 while hitting in the 7 hole. Sounds like Hot Rod needs to stay hitting in that spot.
…And another hit from him there.
2′nd night in a row I get home from work, find Bucs staked to an early lead, with a starting pitcher I expect to hold the lead. I could get used to this!
ahhh, thank you Mr. Fister.
Acccck! Burnett is bunting… pitcher throws it away down third base line. Two runs score. 4-0 Bucs.
Thank you Mr. Young too. What a goof.
When you put the ball in play you never know what will happen. Might be an out 99% of the time but you get something good every so often
JAL
Tigers look like Little Leaguers tonight……..Leyland’s gonna go nuts!
G morning to all my fellow psychos out there. too bad i’m too late for the triple crazy friday =(
a Great weekend for baseball and a great start so far
How did that double error play go? I’m only watching gameday and they don’t really explain much
Fister’s MLB mug shot looks like he was cloned from Verlander.
@Ash
Bunt by AJ right back to pitcher, overthrow to 3rd, LFer fumbled ball after picking it up.
Thanks Ryan
Cutch singles to lead off the third
NP Jeff
After three,
Tigers 0-0-2
Bucs 4-6-0
OK, why was the fastest man on the planet still standing on 1B? I understand situations when you run, but the K pitch on Jones was set up for him to go…..
Fastest man on the planet (or baseball, anyways) is Billy Hamilton in the Reds minor league system. He has like 62 stolen bases so far this season…
i was wrong. He has 82 stolen bases this season!
Doesn’t make him faster than Cutch……….though I haven’t seen him play at all.
Nor am I saying he’s slow………
Pens have traded Jordan Staal to Carolina.
Tigers finally get a hit with two outs in the fourth.
Wow just getting in and see Burnett is looking sharp again…and with some help from the opposition defense and an early six hits have a nice lead.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the team I despise the most the Yankees for giving up on Burnett as he has been a great addition to this team.
surprise, surprise….Staal is traded.
How about that speedster Barajas scoring from first on that bunt-error-error. Looks like having his kids in town put a spring in his step
Dave G
That’s nothing to Sliding Billy Hamilton, he stole over 100 four times in the majors–1889, 1890, 1891, and 1894
VERY sad to see Staal go. He’ll be hard to replace.
@Roberto……
I thought it was a belly flop…..
Penguins trade Jordan Staal to the Hurricanes for First Rd. Pick, Brandon Sutter and a prospect.
Cincy’s Billy Hamilton has done it in just 67 games so far at Bakersfield. He’s hitting .331 as well. He’s a gem!
Barmes strikes out and hits into a double play. Will Hurdle ever give up on him?
LOL @ Steve Blass confiding that the famed LSD no-hitter by Doc Ellis was just a joke on the press. He wasn’t on anything that day!
And Burnett stares down both Cabrera and Fielder to escape the jam in the sixth. Another quality pitching performance being turned in tonight, tough to remember when our pitching has been this good.
What JRay said @ #106
@Ryan,
Lol – If Hot Rod makes it all that way, he can do the Iced Tea plunge at the plate if he wants.
Stetson Allie was 3 for 6 tonight, and is now 5 for 16 in his 4 games. He is batting cleanup. How long before we see the ironic #FreeStetsonAllie from those who were ridiculing him.
@ashevillejeff
I am guessing Barmes will continue to run out there everyday while his relevamt stats stay up. He’s batting well over his career BA this month
Uncharacteristic tough night for Hughes, but Watson comes in and steps up big with the K of Jackson.
Great pitching line for Justin Wilson tonight in Indy going 5.2 innings of no-hit ball….brings me to this question if the Bucs were to cove one of their AAA arms as part of a deal to get a bat who do you think or want it to be – Owens, Locke or Wilson as they have all done equally as well?
Grilli on the mound for the 8th.
Barmes is hitting .258 in the month of June, his career number is .249. I would say Barmes is at least performing better than the .149 he hit in April and the .189 he hit in May I would not call .009 way over his career numbers this month more like right at his career number.
Great job by Grilli! 1-2-3 8th inning.
Backend of our bullpen has been absolutely lights out this season….nice work by Grilli, next up the Hammer.
Minnesota leads Cincy 5-4, bottom of 6th.
Hague now 4 for 10 as a pinch hitter as he singles in the 8th
I’m getting a weird double-audio feed as I watch the Bucs game… hearing the Milwaukee audio at the same time…
Hammer slams the door! Bucs win, 4-1
AJ Burnett pitches six shut out innings to earn his seventh straight win and the Hammer nails it down in the 9th to earn his 18th save as the Buccos trip up the Tigers 4-1 in the opening game of the three game set and there was nooooooooooo doubt about it.
The Bucs move to five games above .500 for the second time this year and will look to go six above the .500 mark for the first time this season tomorrow afternoon when Brad Lincoln will attempt to get back on track.
Let’s Go Bucs!
Burnett wins 7th straight game, first Buc since 1974 to do so.
Twins 5, Reds 4 … bottom 7th.
Great Win boys!
tough 2 pitcher matchups coming up, great way to start the series
Nice job tonight Bucs! Can’t wait to get home at the beginning of July and go the a game with my 6 year old and my Dad! AJ has been been great and so has the backend of the pen!
Randy from Richmond, VA.
Sandusky found guilty on 45 counts.
Reds trail 5-4, top of the ninth now…
@JRay
Barmes June numbers were better before his 0 for 4 tonight. His pregame June numbers were. 283 – Definitely significantly above his career numbers.
For those continuing to clamor for Tabata/Presley platoon should know that Joggin Joe NEVER catches that foul fly which Alex did, and let’s not overlook the leadoff double which triggered the offense tonight.
Tabata should be a bench player; he has done very little to warrant being a starter.
And then we have the Harrison/Barmes debate which posted another definitive picture tonight
Twins hold on for the win!
Bucs one game back!
@pattonbb:
I’m waiting for it….don’t leave me hanging buddy!
…..fear the Bones…..
@pattonbb
Thanks, man. All is well with the world.
Only 4 left on base tonight. The UNDER easily wins along with another solid Bucs win. Thanks to all who played. See you tomorrow afternoon.
