Pittsburgh sports talk with the Trib columnist

On location: NHL Draft, Round 1

By Dejan Kovacevic | Trib Total Media

What: NHL Draft, Round 1

When: 7 p.m.

Where: Consol Energy Center

TV: NBC Sports, NHL Network (before and after)

Here is the official Central Scouting Bureau prospect pool from

UPDATE 6:41 p.m.: Won’t be long now until the Oilers/Bengals get on the clock.

6:47: NHL veep Jim Gregory’s been doing roll call at draft since before forward pass was allowed. By second day, he pretty much punts on the Russian names.

6:49: Boos for the Flyers were even louder than cheers for the Penguins. Not even CLOSE. Had to hold up the roll call for about a minute.

6:50: Only teams that got cheered were the Kings and, to a much lesser extent, the Jets. I get the former. Show of respect. Not sure about the latter.

6:56: Some of the brass at the table, from the Penguins …

7:15: The Oilers take Nail Yakupov, the dynamic winger out of the OHL. Amazing group of forwards in Edmonton now. Pressure’s going to ratchet up before long. When you have Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Jordan Eberle and now this kid … the excuses have got to end. But they still need a long-term goalie and a D-man or five.

7:38: Stupid, senseless booing for new Habs GM Marc Bergevin when he started speaking French. Like anyone here has a dog in that fight.

8:15: WOW. Penguins trade Jordan Staal to Hurricanes for No. 8 overall pick, Brandon Sutter and Brian Dumoulin.

  1. Milo Hamilton says:

Can we get this out of the way early ?

I’d like to congratulate the Los Angeles Kings on winning the Stanley Cup.

Now that that’s been established, can we get on with business ?

DK: Nice and respectful of you, Milo.

  2. cosmo says:

Listening to the fan and they mentioned that the Sens may be interested in trading
for Z. Do you see any truth to this?

DK: No question about it. The brother thing can get overplayed, but Milan Michalek just became a huge part of Ottawa’s future, especially with Daniel Alfredsson near the finish. Keeping him happy is paramount.

  3. diane says:

Pittsburgh looks great when they show clips!

Good to see former head coach M Therrien and Mario shake hands.

DK: We’re good at what we do!

  4. RobertoForever says:

    Re: Cheers for the Jets.

Must be a lot of DK readers at the draft.

DK: I am so thoroughly positive that isn’t it. Most likely, it’s that Winnipeg still strikes a sympathetic reaction from a lot of hockey fans for having been without the Jets for 15 years.

  5. Milo Hamilton says:

Could we have one important hockey event that doesn’t involve Pierre McGuire annoying us ?

  6. diane says:

Pittsburgh booed a french canadien speaking french; what is wrong with that crowd?

  7. Milo Hamilton says:

Let me guess, Morgan Reilly’s not from Ontario.

  8. cosmo says:

    Stall to Carolina

  9. aglebagel says:

  10. diane says:

once jordan said “NO”, shero was going to jettison him fast.

  11. Milo Hamilton says:

Wow. That had to hurt Ray Shero more than any of us will ever know. He looked stunned. But unlike other GM’s, he’s not afraid.

  12. cosmo says:

Pierre Maguire keeps insisting that the trade of Staal frees up money for Pens to go after Zach Parise.

  13. Milo Hamilton says:

Jimmy Rutherford was my 1st favorite Penguin. He once was backed up by Cam Newton.

  14. RobertoForever says:

Just a little humor from the cheap seats. Somehow i doubt that the new Baltimore NFL team or the 2nd version of the Cleveland Browns would have gotten cheered had that NFL draft occured in Pittsburgh, lol.

But thats why I enjoy going to hockey games, even in Columbus Ohio. Most hockey fans are very respectful of the game.

  15. Dave G says:

I’m a big Staal fan. This hurts badly. I wish him well but—wow— he’ll be hard to replace…

  16. bob hasis says:

Milo, may I assume we still retain pick #22? I missed the announcement details.

  17. RobertoForever says:

I will miss all of Jordan’s quiet, hard work on the penalty kill the most. So much to love about him but that tops my list

  18. Milo Hamilton says:

Now that he’s gone, was he in the meeting ?

  19. bob hasis says:

I just got the answer. Thanks anyway. So we have two 1st rounders

  20. Vette60 says:

    Holy Cow!

I just turned on Vs…grrr NBC Sports…just after they announed the Staal trade. This AM, I said that I hoped they could keep him, but it was not to be. Thought Sutter would be coming, Pens draft a D-man with the 8th pick and don’t know too much about Brian Dumoulin.

Anybody fill us in on him?

Again, quite the wedding day for Jordan. Traded to play with your brother.

Should be interesting to see what happens the rest of the way.

    Randy in Richmond, VA.

  21. crkkid says:

    @ vetted

Just read he went to a BC….big frame 6-3 to 6-4. Was runner up for the Hobey Baker award was drafted in the 2nd round….20 yrs old? His contract if he plays in the NHL runs from 700k to 800k….sorry no info on style or how big of a prospect.

  22. Milo Hamilton says:

The definition of irony ? PK Subban in the building waiting for his brother to get drafted as Jordan Staal is traded.

  23. Justin Werth says:

Very excited about the prospects of Parise coming to the Pens. Although a big hurdle must be overcome, unloading Martin and that big stack of paper that comes with him. But at the same time, I feel the Pens should be upgrading the blue line. If the playoffs taught us anything, it’s that the Pens defense isn’t up to snuff currently.

  24. Stuart says:

Nothing here in last 25 minutes. Did the site crash?

  25. Dave G says:

I think everyone’s still stunned by the Staal trade. Or they were watching the Bucs beat the Tigers, 4-1

  26. Bunch of fair weather fans... says:

Parise and Crosby together would be ideal.

  27. Bunch of fair weather fans... says:

The Penguins project to have $10 million in cap space with Martin, $15 million without. Moving him may prove to be difficult, though — in addition to having a no-movement clause and a limited no-trade, Martin is coming off a disappointing year and his contract isn’t up until 2015.

  28. Bunch of fair weather fans... says:

    According to NBCsports

  29. Tim says:

  30. Dave G says:

Sandusky guilty on 45 of the 48 counts against him.

  31. Dave G says:

Sports desks must be going insane in Pittsburgh tonight.

  32. Milo Hamilton says:

Rob Rossi tweeting something may be up with Nashville. Possibly rights to Ryan Suter. Similar to Hamhuis.

  33. JohninOshkosh says:

Kudos to the Jury. Jailhouse justice will likely make the rest of his life very unpleasant.

  34. Stuart says:

It is indeed a strange night in the ‘burgh. Sorry to see Jordy go, but can understand the family thing. Getting a Sutter has to be a good thing. I count three new young defensemen today, and 2 or three waiting in the wings. Maybe Parise rumor is true, with our surplus at (young) defensemen.

Bucs looked good tonight. Was that Pedro’s first Intentional pass this season?

  35. Milo Hamilton says:

    Sather = Smug.

  36. Milo Hamilton says:

Again from Rossi – Shero now talking to Donnie Maloney about Keith Yandle. Apparently not able to work anything out with Nashville.

  37. Patrick N> says:

I can’t believe Pittsburgh traded Staal and we didn’t even get a hard-hitting first baseman in the deal. That would have solved several problems.

Sad to see the guy go, but impressed with the return. I think Sutter will do well, and his numbers will bump up a bit on a better team.

  38. JohninOshkosh says:

The Sandusky story in my opinion ranks with the events of the ’72 Munich games as the most horrific story from the realm of sports. It will never end for those children, now adults. But the Commonwealth can be reassured that the rule of law prevailed, and that whatever earthly justice is possible in a horrific story like this, can be administered.

  39. Milo Hamilton says:

Yandle signed a 5 year $26.25 million extension last summer. Money would have to go back to Phoenix.

  40. Milo Hamilton says:

I’ll certainly never forget this night. And to think a great Pirate win is way down the list.

  41. LuckyNKentucky says:

    Well said, John.

  42. Black n Gold (not yellow) says:

Zbynek Michalek has been traded to Phoenix for prospects and a 3rd round pick

  43. Milo Hamilton says:

NHL Network reporting the Pens have traded Zbynek Michalek to Phoenix for 2 prospects & a draft pick.

    Where’s Jandy ?

  44. pgherinfl - Carl says:

    Wow!! Penguins going crazy tonight!!!

  45. Black n Gold (not yellow) says:

That’s a ton of cap room now with Staal and Michalek gone. I’d be calling Ryan Suter and Zach Parise TONIGHT.

  46. Black n Gold (not yellow) says:

If not Parise then Dustin Penner.

  47. Black n Gold (not yellow) says:

It would strictly be a personal, “how ya doin” phone call. haha

  48. Black n Gold (not yellow) says:

    July 1st

  49. aglebagel says:

One of my first impressions watching the draft tonight: the NHL draft prospects are much better dressed than the prospective NFLers. Must be the heavier European influence in hockey.

  50. Eric Bowser says:

    1) Let’s get this out there now, Staal was going to be traded and had to be traded after he turned down a 10-yr deal, reportedly for around $60 million.

    2) Penguins have one of, if not, the best crop of defensive prospects in the NHL with the likes of Despres, Morrow, Harrington, Samuelsson, etc. through solid scouting, drafting, and development.

    3) Staal to Carolina for center Brandon Sutter, Brian Domoulin, and 8th overall pick was not what I was hoping to see for the former Penguins center but I can live with it.

    4) When the time came for the Penguins to pick in the 8th slot, their selection of defenseman Derrick Pouliot was a big time head scratcher for me because he wasn’t even the top rated defenseman on the board and let’s get real, there were some real nice forward prospects available like Filip Forsberg, Mikhail Grigorenko, Radek Faksa, Zemgus Girgensons and Teuvo Teravainen.

    5) Then came the Penguins own first round pick 22 and once again, another defenseman is drafted, this time Olli Maatta from Finland. They passed on comparable forward prospects drafted in the first round like Henrik Samuelsson, Stefan Matteau, and Tanner Pearson.

    6) I would have felt a whole lot better about this draft if they had drafted Forsberg and Samuelsson to have address the lack of skill at wing.

    7) Night wasn’t over as Shero dumped Zbynek Michalek back to Phoenix for a 3rd round pick, defense prospect Harrison Ruopp, and goalie Marc Cheverie. Penguins save $4 million in space as part of the deal. Ruopp had 9 points in 62 games while playing in the WHL with over 120 penalty minutes, so he’s not exactly a wimp but is he NHL quality, we’ll see. Best thing is the team saved $4 million and get another pick.

    8) Rumors are already flying about Zach Parise and Ryan Suter as unrestricted free agents on July 1 but I think the Devils do all they can to resign Parise and I expect Suter to end up in Detroit with the Red Wings as the anchor to their defense with the retirement of Niklas Lidstrom.

    9) This leaves some other options, most notably Anaheim right-handed sniper Bobby Ryan. No idea what the price would be but I’m guessing Tyler Kennedy, Scott Harrington and second round pick is a starting point for the Ducks.

    10) I know some fans seem to think this was a good night for the Penguins, I do not subscribe to that thinking with the selection of two more defensemen in the draft while good quality prospects were on the board at forward and goaltender. It will be a busy and important Saturday for Shero and his staff with 8 picks. If history is any indication, don’t expect an impact forward on day two.
