Pittsburgh sports talk with the Trib columnist

Final: Phillies 8, Pirates 3

By Dejan Kovacevic | Trib Total Media

Looking ahead to first pitch …

Game: Pirates (38-33) vs. Philadelphia Phillies (34-40)

Time: 7:05 p.m.

Site: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia

TV, radio: Root Sports, 93.7 The Fan

Here is the live box score.

And here is the Pirates’ lineup vs. Philadelphia RHP Joe Blanton

  1. Alex Presley, LF
  2. Jose Tabata, RF
  3. Andrew McCutchen, CF
  4. Garrett Jones, 1B
  5. Neil Walker, 2B
  6. Pedro Alvarez, 3B
  7. Rod Barajas, C
  8. Clint Barmes, SS
  9. Jeff Karstens, RHP

  1. It feels good to see Jeff Karstens’ name back in the line-up.

To paraphrase Drew——”Live long and prosper, Jeff Karstens!”

Or, to quote Lucky——”Live long and be proper!”

  2. JAL says:

Be interesting to see what Karstens does.

  3. I’ve seen Lindsey Buckingham a number of times recently on Saturday Night Live.

    What’s up with that?!?

  4. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Philly makes me nervous.

  5. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

If Karstens goes 5 with minimal damage, I’ll be ok with that.

  6. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I don’t know that he will be better off in the rotation than Lincoln.

  7. Evan says:

    I love Jeff Karstens.

  8. Bill Born says:

The Philadelphia Inquirer states this with the Phillie lineup.

If the postseason were to begin Monday, one team from Pennsylvania would qualify. Yes, the Pittsburgh Pirates have a slim lead on the second wild card spot. They are 38-33 on the strength of decent pitching and timely hitting. They have won six of their last eight.

Charlie Manuel has made one Phillies lineup switch, inserting Mike Fontenot at second base. It’s Fontenot’s first start since June 15. He’s hitting .333 (18 for 54) in limited action.

The next two days could decide the fate of Fontenot or Michael Martinez. (That’s the sort of drama these Phillies are currently reduced to.)

With Chase Utley’s return likely Wednesday, one of those players will return to triple-A Lehigh Valley. Both have options and can be demoted without passing through waivers. Martinez plays better defense and can man shortstop if needed. Fontenot is a better hitter.

The lineup against righty Jeff Karstens:

    1. Jimmy Rollins 6
    2. Juan Pierre 7
    3. Hunter Pence 9
    4. Carlos Ruiz 2
    5. Shane Victorino 8
    6. Placido Polanco 5
    7. Ty Wigginton 3
    8. Mike Fontenot 4
    9. Joe Blanton 1

  9. Black n Gold (not yellow) says:

Karstens is the definition of “pitcher”.

Second Place at the end of the season will win:

Third Place at the end of the season will win:
    (1) 2012 Topps Roberto Clemente Card

  11. Bizrow says:

Put me down for 100 units on the OVAH for both.

Gonna be a high scoring game

  12. Evan says:

    More tough lines.

Give me 100 on the under for the Karstens line.

  13. Kevin says:

    Playoffs –

Line 1: 100 on the UNDER…Line 2 is a tough one, but I gotta make up some ground…soooo

Line 2: 75 on the OVER…hmmmm. Yes, 75 on the over for runs above 4.5

C’mon Bucs, don’t let me down!!

Oh, and thanks for keeping the window up and running Playoffs…much fun and much appreciated!

  14. Nate83 says:

I think it’s awesome that our best starter last year is returning to a team that would probably list him as their third or even fourth starter behind Bedard. That reason alone makes me more confident in this years team as compared to last seasons. We also probably get to move resop off of the major league squad and that leaves a bullpen that doesn’t have one single guy that makes me nervous when they come in. I trust every single guy in the bullpen to get the job done a majority of the time they come in.

  15. crkkid says:

    @ playoffs

Let me have the over on both for 50 units each.

    Thanks again!

  16. Milo Hamilton says:

Drew Sutton won’t arrive in Philly until tomorrow at which time someone will be removed from the bullpen, according to Clint Hurdle.

“Don’t question it, small minds like ours are quite simply incapable of keeping pace with this MENSA-like front office. Just sit back, relax, and watch the magic unfold.”

  17. AJS says:

Hoping Karstens comes out effective. I don’t expect him to look like the karstens that we saw last June and early July or the one we saw in his first couple of starts this season before the injury. But 5 solid innings allowing no more than 2 or 3 runs would be a good return.

  18. Bizrow says:

    Jake Fox was released

  19. stuart66 says:

Window, I’ll take the over on both lines for 50 imaginary Rialls each. By the way, I think I may have confused the issue a bit. My official handle is “stuart66″ (to recognize my former childhood idols’ achieving 66 homers in one year at Lincoln Nebraska), but I frequently just sign off with “Stuart”.

Could you just take the minus 30 listed under “stuart66″ from the plus 75 under “Stuart” and give me just one score for either one? plus 45 is looking good for me and I feel a roll coming on.

  20. Arriba Wilver says:

Is Sutton arriving via Australia, or what?

  21. Bizrow says:

Is Sutton arriving via Australia, or what?

What do they say? You can’t get there from here?

  22. bob hasis says:

Playoffs, are the pierogies filled ONLY with mashed potatoes, and will you prepare them in a skillet with butter and onions, for the better part of an hour medium heat. Don’t be skimpy with the onions.

If so they will be perrrrfect.

I hope you’re not simply going to microwave a dozen of Mrs.T’s. That’s borderline sacri-religious, but I have committed that sin myself – only in desperation.

In the meantime, I would like 50 pierogies for the UNDER 4.5 at Line #2

    Thank you and bon appetit!

  23. Milo Hamilton says:

The Pirates gave him a day to be with his pregnant wife…

“Can’t you see it’s all in the plan. We couldn’t possibly know what will happen between now and his arrival tomorrow. But rest assured, it’s been thoroughly hashed out behind closed doors on Federal Street. And whatever it is, it will surely stun & amaze even the most snide of Pirate fans.”

  24. dcpinpgh says:

50 ducats on over 2.5 and
50 ducats on the under 4.5

  25. Bizrow says:

Maybe they are telling Sutton not to show up until they make a deal?

You cut Resop, he will be picked up, IMHO

  26. JHadar says:

    Biz —

    You can’t there from here.

You have to go somewhere else and try from there.

Sums up Sutton quite well, eh?

  27. The Gunner says:

    @ Nate 83 – #15

The ol’ Gunner is with you and definitely not a fan of Mr. Resop. He is this year’s Jose Veras. I suspect he will be on the way out of Pgh. shortly.

I see Tabata is in the lineup tonight, maybe the Bucs are trying to showcase him. How about Tabata and a couple middle tier prospects to Minnesota for Josh Willingham? The Twins shed some salary and pick up Tabata, a guy who has some upside and might fit in with their rebuilding plans. And the Bucs get a big bat to help us conquer the Central Division.

  28. Arriba Wilver says:

Playoffs-I’m with bob—50 on the UNDER for Line # 2.

  29. Milo Hamilton says:

Joe Blanton has allowed 17 homeruns in 91 innings.

  30. tmp444 says:

Took the weekend off from the window after a tough couple of days. Put me down for 50 faux-Euros on the OVER for both, as the Bucs get back on the winning track with a 6-4 victory.

  31. manny _sanguine says:

Line #1 50 on the over – Jeff may be a little rusty
Line #2 50 on the over – More timely hitting, please.

These lines (and all the previous ones as well) make my brains hurt in a good way.

  32. cmat0829 says:

Please give me 100 fake units on the UNDER for Karstens (he will only go 5 innings) and 100 fake units on the OVER (longball, anyone?).

  33. jeffsbar77 says:

    Line 1 – 100 on the under
    Line 2 – 100 on the over

    Thank you.

  34. Nate83 says:

I’m ok with resop getting picked up. We have meek, moskos, McCutchen and Morris who I all think are better options in relief if someone gets hurt/traded. It also opens a spot on the 40 for Clement or Leroux. Wow can’t believe the pirates have difficult personnel decisions to make.

  35. JohninOshkosh says:

    An attempted CYA wager:

Line 1 Book me for 50 fake American on the over
Line 2 Book me for 50 fake American on the under

Closest I can get to box these well thought out lines

Thanks (Hope the hangover is gone. Hope there weren’t any tigers in the bathroom.)

  36. Bizrow says:

@Nate83 – I’m OK with that too, but if you can deal him, why not?

Not that one would get much at all.

@JH – yeah, something like that (no emoticon in honor of Drew)

  37. Bizrow says:

Resops 40 man spot would go to Sutton, I’m thinking, not Clement or Leroux

  38. Milo Hamilton says:

Sutton is already on the 40 man.

  39. JRay3 says:

@ Playoffs – Welcome back. Well I am out in Vegas with work so very little time so I will have to go with my gut here.

Line 1 – 50 on the UNDER…Karstens is coming off of his best bullpen according to him so he must feel good, and his last start at AAA he was attacking with minimal damage. And although some do not appear very high on him, I truly think he is a solid pitcher and will surprise tonight.

Line 2 – Since I am in Vegas I took a peek at the Over/Under for runs in tonight’s game which stands at 8. The Phillies are actually favored tonight according to Vegas. Which means an under would have a 4-3 Phillies win a over a 5-4 win. I, however, do not agree with Vegas on the winner but do on runs.

So give me 50 on the UNDER for line 2. If the Bucs win I feel it will be on the team’s mantra of pitching and defense.

Also, as for Sutton no real surprise as they probably want the extra bullpen arm available with Lincoln still not ready after throwing on Saturday. So I say take your time Drew.

  40. cmat0829 says:

I’m not entirely sure it is Resop who goes…. I could definitely see Slaten sent down instead or even Hughes… I think this would be temporary as the Pirates are trying to trade Correia and if they can, Lincoln back in starting rotation and Hughes back up to the Bucs.

  41. Ol’ Gunner,

If you think you can get Josh Willingham for Tabata and a couple of “moderate prospects,” you have been spending too much time at your old Beer Distributorship down in Meadowlands.

    Quit testing the products.

If you were the Twins, would YOU make that trade? They just chose to sign Willingham in the offseason!!!

  42. cmat0829 says:

Take it to the bank. Willingham WILL GET traded. That said, I doubt the Twins give him away for less than LEGITIMATE PITCHING PROSPECTS. One thing the Twins aren’t shy about saying: “WE NEED PITCHING BAD”.

They already have Span and Revere, so Tabby (while he ain’t too shabby) is not who they would want from the Bucs.

  43. Milo Hamilton says:

Don’t forget Jared Hughes is a CL candidate.

If they can trade Resop that’s one thing. But Neal would really have to be backed into a corner to just DFA guys like Resop or Slaten. A spot also has to be made for Leroux soon and he too is out of options.

  44. radio wave says:

    At playoffs:
Line 1 60 on the under
    Line 2
    60 on the under

  45. cmat0829 says:

You know, it’s a GOOD THING for the Pirates to have such good pitching depth that they now have the challenge of having to risk losing good pitchers like Resop and Slaten. Forced to choose between the two and I think they’d DFA Slaten before they’d do with Resop.

  46. Nate the Wide Receiver,

Meek, Moskos, and McCutchen have done nothing to prove that they are better than Resop, either last year or this . . . . . . . and Morris has not thrown a pitch in the Major Leagues.

Let’s slow down before we start cutting anyone/everyone.

  47. Arriba Wilver says:

Sorry, just read DK’s column about the NHL. But to blame Donald Fehr for the 19 yers of Pirates losing? Surely you jest. I’m not going to do the research, but it’s pretty well established that lots of low revenue teams won while Fehr was in charge. It was incompetence, not finances, that led to the Streak.

  48. JD says:

Playoffs – 50 on the over got both please.

    Go Bucs!

  49. Dan1283 says:

50 on the OVER for both lines, please!

  50. Milo Hamilton says:

I see you’ve “overserved” us 2 lines today. Ha Ha.

    Line #1 – 25 Under
    Line #2 – 75 Over

  51. JohninOshkosh says:

Since 1997 (prior 15 seasons) 18 different teams have played in the World Series. So for an entire generation over half of the fan bases have seen their team in the Fall Classic. I didn’t bother going through the playoff participants in my head but off hand the A’s Dodgers Cubs, Twins and Brewers come to mind and that pushes the postseason participants in that time frame into the twenties.

There is a imbalance to be sure but Donald Fehr didn’t stop those organizations from at least getting to the postseason and World Series.

  52. bob hasis says:

Playoffs, I forgot one thing; make certain the edges are a little browned, if not slightly crispy.

    You will not be disappointed.

  53. JohninOshkosh says:

Oh, for what draft ratings are worth (next to nothing, probably), USA Today’s Kevin Allen rated the Pens draft/trade/acquisition maneuvers number two. Tops on the list? You might have guessed it-Carolina.

  54. Nate83 says:

Meeks done nothing? He was an all-star. McCutchen did it for longer then resop. Morris has been excellent this year. What has resop done?

  55. Nate83 says:

50 on the under for line 1 and 50 on over for line 2. Thanks

  56. Arriba Wilver says:

John—thanks for that. Supports what I remember reading.

People love to blame the Fehrs and the Borases (pun intended) for our failures, but all we need is for the owners to look in a mirror.

  57. The Gunner says:

    @Groat2Maz2Strangeglove – 42

LOL – you’ve got a good point, my friend. All that product testing I do must be making me hallucinate. Maybe the Twins don’t want to get rid of high salaries. Remember all the good bats the Pirates gave away for nothing (Jason Bay, Ararmis Ramirez) – I thought maybe the Twins might just be in that mode. Let’s hope they are for the Buccos’ sake.

Now, let’s strap it on those guys from Philthadelphia!!

  58. pattonbb says:

Playoffs – As much as I’m hoping Karstens comes out dealing, I think he gives up some runs tonight.

    Line 1 – 50 on the over
    Line 2 – 50 on the under

  59. Arriba Wilver says:

Whoa, radio—for being late to the party you have really quietly risen in the Window’s ranks. 525? Look out JRay!

  60. DemonDachshund says:

    @Playoffs – 50 on each UNDER.

    Thank you.

  61. Bizrow says:

Demon is one sharp cookie, he knows to bet the exact opposite of me

Taught him well, except for the dollar I won when Jeff King drove in a hundred runs one season….

  62. Arriba Wilver says:

Interesting interplay between Rollins and Pedro at third.

  63. dcpfjr says:

Another weak effort by Tabata costs the Pirates a run.

  64. bob hasis says:

Tabata continues not to hustle, and further proves he is a useless dogger

  65. Milo Hamilton says:

    Bad News Bears.

  66. JohninOshkosh says:

Its little league ball. Geez, Tabata.

  67. twentytwo22 says:

Those first two games in Philadelphia were started by Halladay and Lee, but they played the ugliest defense they’ve played in those 19 years. The Pirates are embarrassing themselves like that again.

  68. bob hasis says:

And they brushed aside Lincoln for this

  69. Kevin says:

How does Alvarez even THINK he should make that throw???

  70. JohninOshkosh says:

Playoffs Is that run total for Karstens, earned runs? Cuz if not the Ovah wins line 1 just like that.

  71. Arriba Wilver says:

    Keystone cops.

  72. Eric Bowser says:

My goodness, Jones can’t get the ball off Rollins hit and then all hell breaks loose with Tabata and Alvarez airmailing two balls on the same weak hit to RF. 3-0 Phillies and 1 out, this isn’t a good sign for Karstens.

  73. Chico says:

And there’s the over on the first one. Glad I didn’t make it online in time to lose on this one…

  74. Kevin says:

And to think I was looking at Line 2 as the tough choice…whoda thunk it?

  75. Arriba Wilver says:

Is it too late to put 100 on the Over for # 1? :-)

  76. bob hasis says:

He’s not missing any bats so far

  77. Eric Bowser says:

another Tabata throw to 3B gets by Alvarez and Victorino scores…. unreal

  78. Milo Hamilton says:

Any update on Tabata’s request to wear #21 ? Just wondered.

  79. Eric Bowser says:

@Milo – He seems to think he’s Clemente in RF, he’s not even Jose Guillen.

  80. JohninOshkosh says:

    Jose Tabata=Timmy Lupus

    Morris Buttermaker would be proud.

  81. Kevin says:

    Thanks Pedro

  82. Kevin says:

    Timmy Lupus…LOL. Nice.

  83. twentytwo22 says:

The Phillies are a last place baseball team. They are coming off a doubleheader sweep on a Sunday where they threw their two best pitchers. They are ripe for the picking and the Pirates brought the circus to town. Immature.

  84. bob hasis says:

How soon can we get Tabata to Indy? He is in way over his head and really needs some training!

  85. Bizrow says:

    Its still early folks

The PDogs are not as bad as their record

The question is, is the PBC as good as theirs?

  86. Milo Hamilton says:

    He almost got Engle-puke killed.

  87. Arriba Wilver says:

Are we allowed to talk negative when the Bucs are playing like bad little leaguers?

  88. Kevin says:

Knowing that I lost already on line 1, just want to clarify in the hopes of salvaging something in my miserable gambling career…earned runs or just runs?

  89. Kevin says:

    I am in tears laughing…seriously.

  90. Matt says:

That effort from Tabata on the fly ball was terrible. The 2 errors. Clint should actually think about pulling him.

  91. Milo Hamilton says:

    Kinda salty right now.

  92. Matt says:

  93. bob hasis says:

Barmes here comes your routine 6-4-3

  94. bob hasis says:

  95. Keith says:

    Barmes is killing me.

  96. pattonbb says:

Larry Bowa commenting on this game “Man, that’s just some really bad baseball. Pirates have been playing good, then a game like this pops up and makes you think they’re just not that good”.

What a genius. He’s going to look at one half of an inning being pitched by a guy that’s been out for a while, and make that kind of “in depth” analysis. He was overrated as a player, definitely overrated as a manager, and he stinks on mlb.

Sorry, back to your regularly scheduled entertainment. I just can’t stand the guy.

  97. Arriba Wilver says:

Personally, I think Tabata should have caught Pence’s ” hit” but I don’t get the 2 errors on him.

  98. Bizrow says:

Are we allowed to talk negative when the Bucs are playing like bad little leaguers?

Yes, just not on that other site

The PBC pays more people to post there….

  99. JAL says:

Just because the game is Pennsylvania doesn’t mean they have become the Keystone Cops

  100. Arriba Wilver says:

Kinda funny that the issue earlier was bad mouthing the # 8 hitter.

  101. Chico says:

Who comes up if Barajas is really hurt?

  102. Arriba Wilver says:

    What would Gardy do?

  103. Bizrow says:

The system is “flooded with talent”

Not to worry if Barabbas is hurt

    Ze Plan is in place

Gardy would take a knee and punt

  104. Bizrow says:

@Chico, one would think Morales would come up, but one would think Mercer would have played more, the BMTIB would have had more balance in drafts, ie, HITTERS

And by now, Huntington would have passed at least one Dale Carnegie class…

    Just sayin

    Its early, BEAT EM BUCS

  105. twentytwo22 says:

Good moral support for Tabata. That embarrassment turned into anger and he hit a HR. Don’t give up the ship and find a way to win and this will be a springboard for the roadtrip.

  106. bob hasis says:

Have you ever seen a better display – and successfully so – of hitting the ball where it’s pitched?

  107. Kevin says:

Love your enthusiasm…with you all the way. 1 bad inning…LET’S GO BUCS!!

  108. Milo Hamilton says:

This stolen base stuff is ridiculous.

  109. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Ug……….as in Ug-ly……

    Now THAT’S in-depth analysis.

  110. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I missed the beginning of the steal Milo, but alot is contributed to the pitchers….

  111. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I see why Blanton gives up a lot of homeruns…….4 seamer seems very straight, though good movement on 2 seamer, not alot of gas though.

  112. JohninOshkosh says:

    Agree with you guys-

To reference another great movie from the 70’s: “Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?”

  113. Milo Hamilton says:

I’m not assigning blame. It just needs to stop.

  114. Officer Mancuso says:

A memory from my avid fantasy baseball days – NEVER start a pitcher, on your fantasy team, who in the real game is making his first start after a stint on the DL. It’s the most predictable thing in baseball. Karstens rocks and he will be fine. But not tonight, and iffy next time. These starts just have to be gotten through, more time in AAA doesn’t eliminate the “starters stink when coming off the DL” effect. On the flip side of this equation, the Phils may be dysfunctional so far this season, but make no mistake, they are one of the perrenial championship contenders in this sport for reasons which include the potency of their lineup. GO BUCS!

  115. Kevin says:

So Blanton can be had…who is gonna take him? Apologize for the delay, remember I am the guy who can’t watch so I have to wait for MLB Scoreboard and TribLive to get the updates…

  116. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Can’t argue that

  117. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

How come nobody’s calling for McKenry’s butt?? Like the guy, don’t get me wrong, but producing at the plate is not his game.

For all that’s said about Barmes and Tabata, 2 guys that have RBI’s tonight, The Fort has been the worst hitter of all.

Time for a change, hopefully Barajas’ injury isn’t serious. I think its about time for a Jose Morales sighting……….

    Off to All star practice.

    Let’s Go Bucs!

  118. bob hasis says:

Well there’s a pleasant surprise; I thought for sure we were the only ones unable to bunt

  119. bob hasis says:

No matter they just steal second anyway

  120. Milo Hamilton says:

Looking like a Doug Slaten night.

  121. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Sorry, the great peirogie endeavor has consumed my last 4 hours.
To answer many questions all at once, Yes, Line #1 was for total runs, not earned runs, so the OVER has Line #1 already.

For the record, John Russell would be very proud of this game.

  122. RobertoForever says:

Agreed. Been a fan of Jose’s for a while. Interesting background with the Twins. Seemed like everytime he got promoted, he got hurt. When he made his major league debut, was 0 for 2, then ripped a double. Tore up his knee sliding into second. Worked his way back and over .300 2 seasons later. Hope he gets a chance.

Is anyone hearing whether Hot Rod is hurt enough to hit the DL?

  123. Milo Hamilton says:

Barajas has a bone bruise to the left knee. Happened on a foul tip.

  124. RobertoForever says:

Thanks. Was listening to Phillies radio in the first and they talked about Rollins clipping him on the slide in the first. Not listening since then so wondering.

  125. Milo Hamilton says:

That’s the 9th error for Barmes this year. He made 12 all last season.

  126. bob hasis says:

There is your veteran defense on display. Even if he fields it cleanly, he never throws him out.
Just a humble opinion wrapped in a bold statement

  127. Keith says:

Did I mention that Barmes is killing me?

  128. The Gunner says:

I see many negative comments about Tabata tonight. Good to see a lot of you are agreeing with me about his lousy attitude. As far as the possibility of him wearing #21, surely you jest. That would be sacreligious to say the least. The truth is he shouldn’t even being wearing Pirate uniform #31. A trip to the minors is truly in order for this headcase and the sooner, the better!

As my namesake would say Tabata needs to get on the noon balloon to Saskatoon.

  129. JRay3 says:

@ Milo – And to think many think Barmes is a solid defender at SS. Should have been credited with an error yesterday as well.

Well I thought it would take some pitching and defense to pull this one out, and it appears we will receive neither tonight.

The more and more I see of our corner OF situation the more and more I truly hope NH is working to add Willingham to this club.

  130. bob hasis says:

    @Ryan #118

I know your at All-Star practice, but the story with The Fort is exactly the same as with Barmes and hopefully Tabata, and that is until we get someone better we are stuck. The Fort’s failings at the plate do not in any way minimize Barmes and Tabata futility.

With regard to the rbi’s generated by Barmes and Tabata tonight, you have heard of the blind squirrel and the acorn? Right?

I will leave you with the “cheering” for The Fort, if you so desire.

  131. Milo Hamilton says:

If you look at the stats from last year, Barmes & Cedeno both had 12 errors and identical .978 fielding percentages.

  132. The Gunner says:

It is looking more like NH is going to have to eat Clint “the $10 million dollar man” Barmes contract. This guy makes Ronny Cedeno look like Dick Groat, Gene Alley, Tim Foli, Jay Bell, and Jack Wilson combined. I even think Sammy Khalifa looked better than Barmes even though his big league career was rather short.

What do you think the chances are the Bucs will give up on this loser?

  133. Milo Hamilton says:

Before the end of this year ? A 0% chance.

  134. bob hasis says:

The stats and facts you are always able to instantly dredge up, are most helpful. But I know you and I are among an ever increasing bunch here that can tell he (Barmes) is very ordinary just by the way he handles the chores required.

The rest is up to NH

  135. Arriba Wilver says:

    Biz—:-) (the hell with Drew)

  136. Milo Hamilton says:

Joe Blanton had allowed at least 5 earned runs in 6 of his last 7 starts.

  137. twentytwo22 says:

Phillies bullpen is worn from a DH yesterday, Blanton is over 100 pitches and the 4th time facing him by the lineup go 1-2-3 out at the old ball game. They will never win anything if they don’t hold themselves up to a higher standard. This is a garbage performance.

  138. Milo Hamilton says:

We’re in 100% agreement here. I was just pointing out what the Pirates thought they were getting as opposed to what they actually got. I never thought the guy would hit, but I thought he could at least field the position.

  139. The Gunner says:

    @ Milo – 139

And to think, they could have signed Cedeno for under $2 million. Heck, Jack Wilson at 50% is much better than Barmes & I think he is only making around $1 million with the Braves.

    2012 Barmes = 2011 Overbay

  140. Milo Hamilton says:

Best thing about the Phils loading the bases is that they can’t steal.

  141. Milo Hamilton says:

Pretty obvious Slaten will go to make room for Sutton.

  142. bob hasis says:

. . . . and Cedeno is hitting a respectably consistant .245 – .250. Everyone likes to draw from the blunders that Cedeno pulled (I witnessed a few myself), but they allow that to provide a smoke screen for the overall value he was to a real real bad team.
He’s 29, perhaps turned 30, but Barmes is a way over the hill 33.

    Great job Mr. Huntington

  143. twentytwo22 says:

Sometimes I get the feeling that this team needs a kick in the ass and that Clint Hurdle isn’t the type of person to provide it, it has to fall to a player.

  144. JRay3 says:

With Slaten at 40 pitches in a relief role tonight I think we have our answer to whom will be optioned tomorrow to open a spot on roster for Drew Sutton.

  145. JRay3 says:

@ Bob – That is the most frustrating part about the discussion on Barmes, everybody wants to mention he was listed as a top 5 FA SS, but nobody mentions it was considered a very WEAK crop after Reyes and Rollins. I just fail to let people try to convince me we upgraded immensely in the position, when in my opinion we have maybe taken a very small step backwards.

The true problem to this though is the organization just has not done a good job in developing somebody to handle the SS position for us from within thus having to put a band aid on the situation.

  146. Better Days Coming says:

Check out the “E” column in the box score. There’s been enough kicking tonight. ;-)

  147. Jay G -Jacksonville FL via New Castle says:

Strange game indeed……Everything looks better this year than last….Our squad in PGH and our depth in the minors…..We need Marte and Sanchez to pick up their game in AAA…..Brock Holt in AA putting up decent numbers for a SS……All aspects of the PBC are looking up….Youk traded to Chi-sox…good….

  148. Milo Hamilton says:

    No convenience list for Lurch.

  149. bob hasis says:

Not so fast (a little assist from my friend Lee Corso; haven’t you ever seen a triple steal?

We are capable of allowing one.

  150. Officer Mancuso says:

Krimeny. The team leads MLB for 5 weeks, has one bad night, and the vultures are out.

  151. bob hasis says:

Yeah that’s right, we’re allowed to rest on our laurels; you know what Vince Lombardi, Chuck Noll, Bill Parcells would say to that.

It’s ok to play like amateurs because in truth we’re real pros – for five weeks.

  152. bob hasis says:

That’s two of those professional DP’s for Barmes tonight. Man he is great

    Pathos, Pathos Pathos

  153. twentytwo22 says:

The Phillies are a team that used to be good but aren’t anymore. They still know how to win. Bring your ‘A’ game to the ballpark you win, bring your ‘F’ game to the field and you get taken out with the trash by the trash.

  154. The Gunner says:

Hey, we have 3 more games against the Philthies – let;s put this one behind us and go at ‘em tomorrow night.

Now, it is time for Monday Night Raw.

  155. JRay3 says:

@ OM – I don’t feel the vultures are out as it is the same players with the same sub standard performance I think most of us are concerned with. If we do not make improvements in a very competitive race both for the Central and the Wild Card we could let this very solid first 72 games go by the wayside.

I know I have been singing the praises of CH, the starters, the bullpen, Cutch, Walker, and the improvements from Barajas, McGehee etc. But tonight is further proof this club is weak at SS, corner OF could use a catcher with the ability to throw out a base stealer.

  156. JAL says:

just call it a night to forget

  157. Keith says:

    Barmes = killing me.

  158. Jay G -Jacksonville FL via New Castle says:

2 out of 4 from the Phillies in Philly won’t be so bad………Let’s do it………..

  159. Drew71 says:

My wife says that too, Arriba

  160. JohninOshkosh says:

I had the opportunity to hear some Chicago sports talk while driving around today. Both the hosts and callers were very pleased that Kenny Williams made the move for Youkilis. They didn’t think Youkilis was the greatest player by any means but they appreciated the GM’s aggressiveness to address the ChiSox glaring deficiency at third base (even the incumbent the O-Dog said he didn’t belong there). they also appreciated the move in light of the Sox having a good chance to surprise folks and take the AL Central.

I think most of us similarly appreciated NH getting D=Lee last year. I’m not suggesting that Youkilis would have been a good fit, but JRay and others are right: it would be a shame to waste this pleasantly surprising run without a move.

Kenny Williams knows somewhat what he is doing. Ge has a ring to prove it.

  161. Drew71 says:

I know I’m 4 hours late for this, but how do you punt when you’re on your knee?

Somebody call Huntington. He’ll be able to explain it.

I won’t understand it, but he’ll be able to explain it.

    (Freaking Barmes)

    What was I saying?

  162. Playoffs by 2012 says:

So The Window spent most of the afternoon and evening preparing and cooking pierogies. They were magnificent, if I do say so myself. The Bucs on the other hand….not so much. Karstens really never had a chance and the OVER took the first line. The Bucs put guys on base, but that was really about it and the UNDER won the second line. Thanks to everyone who played. See you tomorrow.
