  1. Let’s Go Bucs!!

  2. Time to take a series today, let’s carry the offense over from last night. Really would like to see Karstens get back on track today as I feel he and Bedard will play a huge part in whether the Bucs have a strong second half as well.

The Pirates have question marks with their #5 guy in rotation need some innings, consistentcy and a chance to win with our three, four arms.

  3. Just gotta grind them out, one game at a time

  4. Should be an interesting weekend, what with the start of Free Agency in the NHL, just got a tweet from Dejan Niskanin (spelling awful) signs for two years at 2.3 per

  5. Supposed to be 104 degrees with dew point near 70! Once again it proves that it is always miserable in St. Louis.

  6. Someone cue the Buster Poindexter cause it’s hot, Hot, HOT!! Let’s open the window!!

Today’s OVER / UNDER (always just for fun of course)

Total Innings Pitched by Jeff Karstens
    Line is 5.75
(If Jeff Karstens pitches 6 innings the OVER wins, anything less than that the UNDER wins)

    49 Current Participants!!
If you haven’t played yet, what are you waiting for??!!??
Anyone can play!! Everyone should TRY!!

First Place at the end of the season will win:

Second Place at the end of the season will win:

Third Place at the end of the season will win:
    (1) 2012 Topps Roberto Clemente Card

  7. A Drew point near 71?

    I know that guy.

DK: Drew’s on the bench today.

  8. Another good line Playoffs

With the heat and all, I’ll go 50 UNDAH

Need Pedro to get a couple of hits for weekend line 2

  9. Why in the world are Tabata and Presley still getting starts at the top of the order when neither one has shown any willingness to take a walk or inclination to improving their on base abilities and what in what bizarro reality that is Clint Hurdle’s mind does Clint Barmes hit ahead of McKenry?

Even if they feel that they have no other choice than to play these free swinging, out machines they should be buried as deep in the lineup as possible to keep them from hindering the offense.

  10. Too many Drews ;-)

No McGeehee today too, he’s been swinging a decent bat lately

  11. @ Paul – Tabata last night 2 hits 2 BB in 6 PAs

    Presley 2-3

Hurdle goes with the hot hand

  12. Don’t forget to post where you are currently residing, still stuck at 205 confirmed lunatic locations

  13. @ playoffs – 75 on the under – back to the pool

  14. Wonder how many gallons of sweat Jim Bibby would have put out today if he was pitching in St Looie?

  15. at playoffs:
Because of the heat factor, 100 on the under.

  16. @Playoffs:

    50/Under, please.

Stay cool, everyone. I think the whole nation is hot!

  17. Karstens went to Texas Tech where 106 in the summer is a relief. I’ll take 75 on the Over. Come on Jeff!

  18. 25 on the over, if you please

  19. @Playoffs

100 on the UNDER plz — thanks!!

  20. @Playoffs:
Staying positive hasn’t helped me at all, i’ll give it another shot.
70 for the OVER 6 innings.

I completely agree. AJ or J-Mac being who they are, and Correia being who he is, how Karstens and Bedard perform might just decide the fate of the Buccos this year.

Lance Lynn has been consistently good this year (especially the 2 games he had vs us early this year), though a bit shaky in his last 2 starts, so today’s game’s gonna be good test for this hot offense.

  21. Playoffs

    Please, 50 UNDER.

    Thank you

  22. Playoffs –

Let’s keep the win streak alive (my personal streak, that is) !! 100 on the UNDER please.

  23. Playoffs – 100 on the under.

  24. @ Playoffs – good day from 112 degree Phoenix summer is definitely upon all of us.

Tough line today. Karstens has only pitched 6 innings in one of his four starts this year and made it through just five in his return from the DL. Couple that with he was pretty equal in 2011 with hitting the six inning mark but failed to do so in his two starts versus St Louis last year. Trends and the numbers indicate the under may be the play.

However for some reason I believe in Jeff and think he can be a solid contributor to the rotation. I will never forget watching him a few years back and nearly throwing a no hitter against the Dbacks while I was in attendance. Couple that with the pen having to cover four innings last night and I believe he will be on a mission to prove something.

So give me 50 on the OVER on what I admit may be an emotional play.

  25. @Playoffs

Good line again today. I was hoping the heat would have affected the “computers” at the window today and we might get a mistake line, lol.

But its right at that tough spot, as usual.

I was going to go for the under because of the heat, and Jeff coming back from the DL. But Evan informed us that he went to college at Texas Tech, and I am sure he has pitched in some heaters.

Just not sure, but hate to sit out, so I’ll go conservative with 25 on the Over. Would love to see the Buccos win the series today and make my under bet on the series wins a total throwaway! BeatEmBucs

PS – must have been alot of #Zoltan’s thrown around yesterday. Wish I could have seen the feed, but somehow, where I was in Ohio yesterday qualified as the “home market” for the Indians, Reds AND the Pirates. Go figure. Thanks Bud!

  26. Playoffs 50 on the over please. Logically they only got 5 out of Correia last night so they should want to get at least 6 from karstans but logic goes out the window when betting on a line made by the window.

By the way how good does Lincoln look as a reliever. I would start him once a month just to make him mad.

  27. Playoffs-

    100 on the over.

  28. @playoffs,

    50 on the under pls

  29. 100 on the under. Thx!

  30. @playoffs: 25 on the over

  31. Play Ball!!

    Let’s go Bucs!!

  32. @Playoffs -

Bucs are batting, but Karstens hasn’t pitched yet, so can I still get 60 on the UNDER?

  33. Cutch and Jones with back to back singles, Walker with another chance to get some two out magic going!

  34. Let’s go Pedro! Let’s empty these bags and put the Bucs up.

  35. c’mon Pedro…keep that day game success going!!

  36. See Ya!!!!! 4-0 good guys!!!

  37. HOLY S*&^%&^%$&^%$&^%$!!!!!!

  38. Pedro with his first career grand slam

  39. GRAND SLAM Pedro Alvarez…are you kidding me! El Toro strikes again! All this damage with two outs.

  40. PEDRO 1st inning GRAND SLAM!

  41. I think we need to send Pedro down to AAA.

  42. ElToro LOVES day games!!

First career Grand Slam. Haha. I love when the trend lines make my predictions look clairvoyant, lol.

4-0 lead in the top of the first. 482 FEET bomb.

    Lynn, an All-Star? Naaaaah.

  43. Oh Yeah Pedro! Great start. Shut em down Jeff.

  44. The Pirates force Lance Lynn to throw 31 pitches in the first inning, maybe able to get to the Cards pen early again and we all saw what happened last night with that unit!

    Great start.

  45. Heading to PNC to vandalize the stadium lights. We need a full season of day games.

  46. That guys a bum. Why can’t he hit it 500 feet.

  47. Cutch and Alvarez each with 15 HR’s on the season, when Pedro gets going it makes this lineup a little more scary….twice in two days Walker pitched around and Alvarez makes the Cards pay, may want to rethink that strategy Matheny!

  48. There is some run support for Karstens. Let’s keep piling it on and make sure Cincy knows that they NEED to run tonight to keep a one game lead in the Central.

  49. Per Cardinal radio:

Franchise record for Pirate dingers in month of June!

  50. @Evan – Can we just cut them down. It will take longer to replace if they are cut down and go missing.

  51. Evan, whatever you don’t get today, I’ll get on Monday! Day games for #ElToro. Let’s petition for all Saturday games moved to 415, lol.

And a correction – The radio team was wrong – Pedro had a grand slam in Milwaukee in 2010. TWICE as good.

  52. @bizrow, slack, radio, john, evan, dcpin, jmb, mike c, bob, kevin, pattonbb, jray, roberto, nate, jeffsbar, manny, oz, chico, demon, YOU GOT IT AND GOOD LUCK!!

  53. @John

Yep, ties the franchise record for HR’s in June, set back in 1975.That team had Pops, Manny Sanguillen, Dave Parker, Richie Zisk, Al Oliver and Richie Hebner.

Interesting parallels – The 75 team also struggled in April and May, hitting only 14 and 12 HR’s, batting .236 and .266, and only got .207 out of the SS position that year.

Let’s hope this team matches the 92 that the 75 team achieved!

  54. @Nate83 –

Seriously. When is he going to man up and really hit some bombs, lol.

  55. Playoffs – I’m at a golf scramble, missed the line. Been drinking beers since 9:00. Go Bucs!

    Roberto – where in Ohio?

  56. Wow, that’s only the SECOND successful base stealer all season. prior to that only 1 in 5 was successful.

  57. @JD

Visiting Columbus, OH. You from the Buckeye State?

  58. I’ve been saying for awhile that the Bucs are two or three bats away from being serious contenders. However, it’s starting to look like Pedro has become one of those bats, and McGeeHeeHeeHee looks like he’s continued the new Pirate 1B tradition of being terrible in April/May before heating up.

I’m also on record as saying that the April/May Bucs looked just like last year’s version. The June Bucs have looked NOTHING like the 2011 team… They’re losing close ones and winning decisively. They’ve pushed into positive run differential, which given the ground they had to make up to get there, implies that they’re playing some very good ball.

I don’t think I’ve ever been so happy to be wrong.

  59. Jeff Karstens looks zeroed in today….3 K’s through the first two innings and mixing his pitches very well.

  60. Darn! I keep missing these afternoon starts!!!! Didn’t get to the window in time!

  61. That was some game last night, and let’s not forget the terrific job of relief by
    Lincoln. GO BUCS!!

  62. Cutch is hitting .371 with 7 HR’s and 26 RBI’s in month of June, thank you NH for at least locking him up to a long term deal, he has a chance to be one of the best Pirates ever.

And with that just another hit to raise his average to .349.

  63. Another hit for Cutch. Absolutely locked in right now.

  64. uh oh….walks continue to hurt us.

  65. The inability of this staff to hold runners at first is going to really become an issue in the 2nd half of this season. It really needs to be addressed soon.

  66. and now Cutch is hurt…………#whygodwhy?

  67. Unreal catch by Cutch, but hold my breath at the sight of seeing him grimace and holding his wrist.

  68. Hope his wrist is okay.

  69. Please be ok, please be ok, please be ok….

    clicking my feet like Dorothy….

  70. The Fort showing some pop in his bat of late….could really use getting him in here.

  71. At least he is back in the dugout and looks like he is going back in.

  72. @ TDB – That is a relief, you could make the argument that there is no single player that means more to his team than what Andrew McCutchen means to the Pirates.

  73. That hurts, tailor made double play ball and Walker with poor throw only gets one. Hope that does not come back to hurt us this half inning.

  74. That wrist isnt right. He can’t swing a bat.

  75. Pretty safe bet Cutch gets a rest tomorrow.

  76. And the Pittsburgh Kid pokes a double down the third base line to give the Bucs another run! Lynn over 100 pitches let’s tack on!

  77. no way they pitch to Pedro here.

  78. When was the last time the Pirates hit two grand slams in the same game? Not saying Barmes is going to do it, but just out of curiosity.

  79. Thankfully Barmes beats out the potential DP ball and the Bucs retake a four run lead.

  80. @JRay3

You may want to rethink that – it was a perfect flip by Walker to Barmes who gave you his best lollipop to first, which pulled Jones off

  81. @ TDP – The Pirates have hit two grand slams in a game four times in their history, the most recent on April 16, 1996 against the St. Louis Cardinals.

  82. @JRay

    Re: Cutch

Isn’t that the definition of MVP?

  83. @bob hasis

Barmes wasn’t involved in the play that JRay was describing. It was Pedro to Walker to Jones. And Walker blew the turn. It lead to no runs however, as Karstens buckled down that time.

  84. A very nice quick 10 pitch 1-2-3 inning for Karstens and now the Buccos have a chance to add more against the Cards pen.

  85. Great productive out by Barmes. Hustling all the way to first so the jones run counted. And he gets his 18th RBI. Not bad for a #8 hitter. I’ll have to look up how much production other teams are getting from the #8 spot.

  86. @ Roberto – Absolutely…if his play continues at this level all season and the Pirates remain in contention Cutch should get serious MVP consideration.

Regardless, I already believe he is.

  87. @TDB

Don’t give up on that 2 Grand Slams. With this Cardinals bullpen, we may get a few more whacks at it.

  88. GIants and Reds underway from AT&T Park, come on Barry Zito.

  89. Production from the 8 spot:

2nd most RBI, #1 in HR’s, lowest in walks. middle for K’s

  90. Tip of the hat to Jeff Karstens who turns in a quality start. He gets through the sixth making the OVER a winner!

  91. And Karstens doing well, gets a 1-2-3 6th inning and the OVER wins. Karstens only at 84 pitches thru 6 IP, but I am guessing he comes out the next time AB, since the bullpen is fully rested.

  92. Congrats to all who took the over today. I happily give 100 units back to the window. Lets get Karstens a couple more runs right here.

  93. Is there a link showing Pedro’s grand slam?

  94. Is that Jeff Karstens or Greg Maddux out there?

  95. That’s Karstens. The Karstens we know and love.

  96. @RF – Let’s break that down a little further, shall we?

    Pirate 8th hitter—RBI—HR–BB–SO
    Other Bucs———-21—–8—18–40

So yes, the other Pirates have hit very well in the 8 slot. That doesn’t make Barmes an average 8 hitter.

  97. @ The Gunner: If you go to, click scoreboard, then click on the Pirates/Cards gameday box they have the video in there.

  98. @ DemonDachshund – I would imagine a lot of the credit for those stats was the recent play of Mike McKenry hitting in the 8 spot when Barajas went down.

  99. I am very happy to lose my 50 unit bet

I will not doubt Kartsy again

I will still beat AW ;-)

  100. Karstens final line – 7 IP, 4H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K’s….I believe….great start today!

  101. Anybody watching the Pirates feed and have they said anything about pulling McCutchen from the game? I hope this wrist thing does not become a problem.

  102. Reportedly, he was pulled due to a sore wrist, hopefully its just precautionary

  103. My guess is that he sits out tomorrow’s finale.

  104. So much for getting Hammer another day off today.

  105. We need 4 outs, grind it out PBC

  106. Hughes is my favorite goon. Nice Job!!!

  107. Tabata gets the bunt down to get Presley to third, very good execution, chance to get the run right back.

  108. Speedy Presley gets the run back.

  109. Behind an opening inning Grand Slam from Pedro Alvarez and seven strong innings turned in by Jeff Karstens the Pirates win their fourth consecutive game 7-3 and their was nooooooooo doubt about it.

The win gives the Buccos the series win versus the Cardinals. The Pirates move to a season high seven games above the .500 mark at 42-35.

The Pirates will attempt to go for their third sweep of the season tomorrow afternoon with Erik Bedard taking the hill.

Now fingers crossed we receive a good report about Cutch!

  110. Can’t complain about these first two games. Time for a sweep.

  111. @DemonDaschund

I was not looking at Barmes – only production in the 8 spot.

  112. WOW

Did our 4th and 5th starters just BEAT the Cardinals??? LOVE IT!!

Raise that Jolly Roger and drink some AB beer in Busch stadium!! Would LOVE to see a sweep tomorrow behind our #3 starter.

Pedro did hit the HR in the day game (someone foresaw that, hint, hint, lol). Hope he hits another day game HR tomorrow! He will however need 3 hits to get to the over.

Pirates win 2 of 3 and that OVER wins, and I happily donate my 50 fake units back to the window for that loss.

Pirates also match last year’s season high of 7 games over .500 – Let’s go Zito and the Giants. Get it together. Giants being 1 hit today by normally terrible Mat Latos, after getting only 1 run while Mike Leake stole the shirt off their backs in a complete game. Geez Giants. Do something!

  113. …fear the Bones…

  114. Wow, Votto just left the Reds-Giants game with an injured knee. Cutch out with an injured wrist. Both team’s MVP banged up. Hope ours is fine and there’s ends up on the DL. With all due respect, lol.

  115. @ Roberto – What happened to Votto? Did you see the play?

  116. Jim Thome traded to the Orioles.

  117. If Cutch is injured enough and needs to go on the DL…Marte will likely be called up, yes? Does Huntington go out and finally make a deal for an added bat also?

  118. @pattonbb

Didnt see it. Reds radio said he hit a grounder to third and couldn’t run it out. They called it inflammation in the knee. No other word. Giants scored 1 run in 9th, like last night, but probably going to lose 2-1, darnit

  119. Cutch tweeted that he is fine.

Also reporters tweeted that Hurdle will be giving Cutch the day off tomorrow anyway.

Latos set to pitch 2nd straight complete game for Reds. That’s one way to get around Chapman’s struggles, lol

  120. Wonder if Playoffs can throw something in for LAST place? Heading there FAST…Still love it, though – GO BUCS!!

  121. NH for Emperor. Nutting deserving of at least a cargo cult in Etna. Go Bucs! Great to see Karstens back in the groove, he’s part of the secret recipe of this team’s success.

  122. @Kevin

I’m NOT giving up last place. That’s mine…all mine! If playoffs allowed larger bids, I would go all in.

  123. The Emperor Chaz Neal.

    Is that mixing metaphors?

  124. Flipped over to the Cin/SF game just in time to see Votto tweak something on a very awkward looking swing. His facial expression looked a lot like Cutch’s on the check swing. He hit a weak grounder on the next pitch and clearly wasn’t comfortable running to first. He came out of the game after that.

  125. TDB—let’s not even talk about Cutch on DL. No way we’re a better team without Cutch no matter who you bring up or trade for.

  126. Good game. Been without power in DC since 10 last night and then traveled to Chicago, where I am now–with power.

  127. JUNE. Seriously.

  128. Well what do ya know? June is now over and the Buccos put together quite an impressive month. Also, congrats are in order for DCPINPGH for taking over the lead in the current standings.

Jeff Karstens easily covered the OVER today with 7 strong innings, and by winning the first 2 games, the Bucs covered the OVER for wins this weekend. Thanks as always to everyone who played. See you later today.

  129. From the AP story, probably as Andrew was icing his wrist:
“I’m not trying to get days off,” McCutchen said. “I get days off in the offseason.”

(any comment i add would be superfluous. just go back and read that again.)
