Oh, and if you guys haven’t seen this yet, you’re welcome …

Also, here is the chat transcript from earlier this afternoon.

  1. Oh man! Bud Norris? He is like the bucs new nemesis! Gotta keep those bats hot!

  2. OO-RAH! 5 runs, 11 hits, Barmes homers. Now for my next act…

  3. buggee you are on fire today. remind me of a little kid who just had too much sugar!

  4. Great video! Let’s Go Bucs! Let’s go for the sweep tonight and bring on SF.

  5. Forget Pringles, I gots me some of that Bucco’s Fever n’at. Ain’t no cow bell gone cure it

  6. right on AJS! everybody… together now… let’s RAISE IT (ya jagoffs) ‘n’ den we’ll go dahn to da bar ‘n’ git some ahrn ‘n’ mebbe some chipchop ham ‘n’ ‘at, right after we git aht some brooms fer dem jagoff astros

  7. Fleury Flakes aint bad

  8. OK. Am I the only one that thinks the Zoltan thing is kinda stupid?

Its cool that the guys have their “thing” but really? The Zoltan?

    Who came up with that?

  9. @Playoffs

I’ll take 250 on the OVER BTW, for the wins.

  10. Bud Norris is exactly the type of guy who would own the pirates early this season and in seasons of the past (or at least it seems like it to me).

It seems to me like they always have trouble with guys who are having sub par seasons ERA-wise, but who have good strikeout arms.

Liriano, Scherzer early this season, Bud Norris in the past, Homer Bailey off the top of my head. I don’t know if there’s any data to back my claims up, but it just seems like i can predict when the pirates will get owned because of this.

But this is a different Pirate offense these days!

  11. Ryan–I’ve heard others criticize the Zoltan thing, but, really, who gives a crap what they do, as long as they are winning? I don’t. More power to them that they are having fun with it. Lots more other things that are important to worry about, or cheer. And watch the movie with the dog scene, and you may change your mind. :-)

  12. @ Ryan – No worse than the Brewers doing the “monster” thing to each other last season. According to something I read Neil Walker was saying early in the season they could not find anything to watch in the clubhouse and came across the movie “Dude Where’s My Car”, many had not seen it in a while and they watched. The players were commenting on how silly it was then they saw the Zoltan and started doing it and it stuck.

To me the best part of it is it seems to bond the team, a rallying cry of sorts I guess, to that I say whatever works.

You sure you did not want the under on that? Second place stinks.

  13. The Window lost power there for a few hours. Thank the good Lord it is back. Let’s open the window!!

  14. @Ryan

No it’s not stupid at all. They watched the movie, and in the movie Zoltan Z was done by ‘losers’ no one respected. I think it fits admirably to the Pirates.

  15. After watching that video, tonight’s game can not get here quick enough….NICE!

  16. Great video…really love the clips of Cutch rounding the bases on a triple. Ridiculous speed.

Presley is on the 7 day DL and, don’t tell anyone, but Jordy Mercer is officially in the witness protection program again.

  17. @JRay and AW

I’m not exactly worried about. Just find rather annoying I guess.

J-I agree that if it works for them, then keep doing it. And yep, you read that wrong……..keep playing catchup buddy!

  18. @playoffs.

Tough one….thanks again. I actually have to think on this one a little, I usually dont.

  19. @mayhay…

Witness protection! Priceless! What ticks me off is that they have essentially shortened their bench by two players between Gorkys and Mercer. At least Gokys is a good late inning defensive sub. I’m sure mercer will only see the field if barmes, j-Hay, and Sutton all come down with the flu.

  20. Well if karstens strikes out 10 guys that is at least 30 strikes…ya right. I’m going to continue to stay away from the window. My luck in betting is terrible and my heart wouldn’t let me pick against the pirates in any way. So my optimism plus bad luck would mean betting the Pirates favor all the time and losing, which likely would mean the team would lose so ya, i don’t want a bucco colapse to be on my head.

    Man, I sound ridiculous!

  21. Playoff, you never cease to amaze me

I’ll take the OVAH for the max for all three lines – 100 golden nuggets for Line 1 and 2
250 golden nuggets for Line 3

Its good to be back at home, couldn’t get on yesterday and not until now today.

It will be interesting to see if DemonDachshund bets the OVAH or UNDAH on line 3, he used to tell me, he missed the Stillers glory years, then he gets to go see the Stillers win Superbowl No. 6. He got me a ticket, but I chickened out.

Somehow, I got the feeling the Gunner is smiling up there

  22. Bucs went from a “potential” great fielding, speed OF (Cutch, Pres, Tab) to this tonight. Cutch will need to cover line to line on defense. Like Sutton’s and Jones’ bat but their defense/speed leaves a little to be desired, especially towards the notch. Go bats.

  23. Playoffs, I have a technical question regarding those 63.5 strikes; what if a batter fouls off ten pitches – do they count as strikes?

  24. Playoffs –

Gonna need 100 on the UNDER for Line 2 please. Thanks, as always.

  25. @Playoffs…

Special Line: 250 units on the over 36.5 wins

  26. Well tonight we get a first hand look at one of the pieces of the Carlos Lee trade as Dominguez is in the lineup batting 8th and playing 3B.

Lee today with the Marlins in his first game with them is 2-4 with a R as they lead the Brewers 4-0….I will take that swap given we play the Astros 11 more times including today.

  27. @bob

Good question. But foul balls are tracked against the pitchers pitch count. I would assume they would be counted as strikes.

  28. @ Bob – yes those count as strikes, anything called, or swinging or fouled off is considered a strike pitch from the total pitch count. Hope that helps

  29. @ playoffs

I would like 100 units on the under for prop #1, 100 units on the under for prop #2, and 250 units on the over for prop #3.

  30. Playoffs, I would like 50 on the OVER 8.5 on Line 2
And I have already submitted for OVER 36.5 for 250 as of yesterday.

Line 1 is too abstract, yet if you note my performance thus far, it would be accurate to say, Every has been abstract for me.

  31. If you haven’t signed into the Lunatic Nation, just post where you currently reside.

If you are Zach Parise, don’t bother ;-)

  32. @playoffs

    Line 1: 100 under

Line 2: 100 on the over

  33. @Playoffs

I’m going to take 100 on the under for line 1, 100 on the under on line 2, and 250 on the over for the special line.

  34. Meaning ALL 10 if a batter was able to do so. In other words, it is conceivable to get 4 or more strikeson numerous batters.

i.e. If they get 36 batters to the plate and each got just 2 strikes that’s 72.

Just considering 27 outs, @2 strikes per batter is 54.Hmmmm!

  35. But, the Buccos still win tonight. Way too much momentum on their side. Helps that Carlos Lee won’t be in the lineup.

  36. @bob

    You got it.

  37. Playoffs–I’ll go 50 on the UNDER for Line # 2. Can’t pick Line # 1 because I’ll be there.

  38. @Ryan and @JRay3

the wager is for Karstens only. I knew Playoffs was shrewder than me.

    Too abstract – I pass

  39. Hit pitches are strikes

    They add up

  40. @Ryan, for the special line, you got it and good luck!!

@AJS, The Window is a firm believer in karma, mojo, and hexes, The Window understands what you are saying 100 percent.

@Bizrow, thank you sir, you got it and good luck!!

@bob, yes sir, all foul balls will count as strikes, The Window will go off of the official box score for official strike count.

  41. @ Playoffs – Good afternoon on potential sweep day for the Bucs. Boy have your lines gotten interesting at times. So a two play Thursday is in line, time to try and tackle these and make up some ground as I have become the Cincinnati Reds of this contest.

Line 1 – What a line to attempt to pick. My research shows that in his three considered full starts, Jeff Karstens has thrown 54,60 and 62 strikes most recently. Those all came in games he threw between 85-95 pitches which appears to be his max 95 ish range. So a slight up trend. But how bout this for a cool stat, exactly one year ago today on July 5, 2011 Jeff Karstens started against these same Houston Astros. In that game he threw 95 pitches, 72 for strikes in a 5-1 win earning him his seventh win of the season. I believe he attacks the zone against a weaker opponent again tonight.

I will take 100 on the OVER for Line 1

Line 2- Well looking back at the past 10 games or so the Bucs have struck 8 times a few times and over the number a couple of time including earlier in this series against the Stros with 13 K’s on Tuesday night. In addition Bud Norris struck out 8 in 6 IP in his only other start versus the Pirates this year and comes into the contest with 82 K’s in 79 IP.

The Bucs have had their share of problems with strikeout pitchers…so for line 2…. I will take 100 on the OVER.

Also 250 on OVER 36.5 second half wins.

Thanks so much, get your broom out and Let’s Go Bucs!

  42. It’s so good to see my Buccos doing well and the Zoltan thing is hilarious!

  43. @ playoffs

    line 1- 50 under
    line 2 – 50 under

  44. Remember when everybody loved Nats GM Mike Rizzo because he seemed to be the antithesis of Neal Huntington?

“We’re never going to do a knee-jerk reaction to win now,” Rizzo said.
    -per MLB Trade Rumors

  45. And THANK YOU!! GOOSEBUMPS on the video, Dejan!

    God, I love baseball (again)!

  46. @Kevin, you are welcome, you got it and good luck!!

@Naje, you got it and good luck!!

@crkkid, you are welcome, you got it and good luck!!

@bob, The Window likes the vocab word “abstract”, you got it and good luck!!

@Ryan, fearless leader, you got it and good luck!!

@TDB, good to see you again, you got it and good luck!!

@Arriba, have fun, you got it and good luck!!

@JRay, you saw the same stat about Karstens that The Window did, love how you do your homework, you got it and good luck!!

@cosmo, you got it and good luck!!

  47. At playoffs:
100 under on both lines tonight.
Previously poxted for 200 ober on the special.

  48. Playoffs:

line 1: 50 on the under
line 2: 50 on the under
    special: 250 on the over

  49. @Jray

Good analysis. I agree, I think Karstens will go right after the hitters tonight.

    Line 1: very tough call.

  50. To clarify a little bit………

A STRIKE is a legal pitch when so called by the umpire, which –
    (a) Is struck at by the batter and is missed;
    (b) Is not struck at, if any part of the ball passes through any part of the strike zone;
    (c) Is fouled by the batter when he has less than two strikes;
    (d) Is bunted foul;
    (e) Touches the batter as he strikes at it;
    (f) Touches the batter in flight in the strike zone; or
    (g) Becomes a foul tip.

  51. 100 on the over for both, please

  52. Playoffs

    Apply at a Nuke Plant

Good description of the rules ;-)

  53. DK, didn’t get to “bust” you on this the other day, but….

“So, the Minnesota Wild pulls off the double-double, landing Zach Parise and Ryan Suter in what now very clearly was a package deal: Both signed for 13 years and $98 million.”

    DK: Nice.

  54. @Evan, you got it and good luck!!

@Bizrow, took it directly from MLB’s rules page.

  55. DK:

BTW, I won’t throw anything at you for mentioning Philly, but SF is an amazing city, when you can see it through the fog.

My 2nd favorite city I have been too.

  56. OK Playoffs, give me 50 on the under on line 1, 50 on the over on line 2, and 250 on the over for line 3!

  57. DK,

Quick question for you. Any word on the fates of Moskos or Slaten? Have they cleared waivers yet or have they even been posted? Also, when is a decision needed on Leroux and whom does he replace in Pittsburgh? Thanks as always.

DK: No, and that word only comes from the Pirates after the 10 days are up. Leroux’s decision is due very soon, per what Neal Huntington told Rob Biertempfel today.

  58. @Playoffs

Moskos is catching tonight for Baltimore; oh wait that’s Wieters, I always get them mixed up.

  59. Playoffs – You’re killing me with these.

Line 1: 100 on the UNDER.
Line 2: 100 on the UNDER.

Second half 36.5 wins line: 250 on the OVER

  60. Playoffs by Infinity,

Today is Leroux’s day——they have to put him on 25-man roster by tonight or DFA him. His 30 day rehab assignment runs out today. (Designated for Assignment——have 10 days to put him on waivers or trade him or release him. Can retain him and send him to Minors after 10 days only if no one else claims him and he agrees to go.)

    Nor Cali Ryan,

I’m with you . . . . . . San Fran is the only city that give the ‘Burgh a run for its money. To see it from Alcatraz is amazing! Certainly #2!!!

Philly is for phools and philanderers and phlakes!

  61. December 1983 Dan,

Good call——nay, GREAT call——on the “package deal” NO SOUP FOR YOU call out on Dejan!!

  62. Thanks DK, appreciate that.

  63. @Groat, thank you as well.

@pattonbb, The Window is both fair and balanced :) , you got it and good luck!!

  64. For those that love a good baseball story, this is a must read.

It’s not a Pirates player, but I couldn’t help but read about it.

  65. @Playoffs

Special line – 250 on the OVER
Line 1- 35 on the under
Line 2- 35 on the OVER

  66. Line 1 100 UNDER

    Line 2 100 OVER

    Go Bucs!

  67. The Brewers lost to the Marlins today…….

  68. @Playoffs -

    Line #1 – 50 on the OVER

    Line #2 – 50 on the UNDER

Special – 250 on the OVER (just repeating my entry from yesterday)

    Let’s Go Bucs!

  69. Deal Leroux, Hanny can’t go anywhere right now

    Bring up Clement, a stick

  70. @playoffs – #1 – 100 over; #2 – 100 on the over & #3 – 250 on the over-

    Lets go Bucs!

  71. Its still too early

    Hope but expect

No magic numbers right now, put your head down, PBC and do what yu are doing

    Grind it out

  72. @Playoffs

    - Line 1 => 80 on the OVER
    - Line 2 => 30 on the UNDER

I put my 250 on the OVER for line 3 last night. As said in that thread, the Bucs have a very friendly second half schedule. I’m not saying that they’ll make the playoffs, but you have to absolutely LOVE their chances of getting to 82 wins.

  73. Checking in from Sec 204, with broom in hand!!

    Playoffs, we’ll go:

    #1: 50 on the UNDER
    #2: 50 on the UNDER
#3: 250 on the OVER to break the streak!

  74. Line 1 – 50 on the under

    Line 2 – 50 on the under

  75. @playoffs

100 on the under for line one
50 on the under for line two

  76. Finally able to see the video. Very cool. Thanks DK.

  77. @MarkV, Milo66, Mlr, Slack, Demon, tmp444, and Nate

  78. @Chico, you got it and good luck!!

  79. @playoffs

Line 1: I’ll take 75 on the UNDER
Line 2: I’ll take 100 on the UNDER

  80. So far we have 36 participants for the SPECIAL LINE!!

All 36 have the Pirates winning more than 36.5 games in the 2nd half of this season.

    Time to believe!!!!

  81. Playoffs: Can I have over on all three lines for the max please. Thanks.

  82. @bman, you got it and good luck!!

@cmat, you got it and good luck!!

  83. Alright Window is officially closed. Thank you to everyone who played. LET’S GO BUCS!!

  84. Seems as if this knee thing is lingering quite a bit for Barajas, second time he has been a late scratch from lineup in past few days. Don’t mind seeing the Fort back there with as hot as he has been though.

  85. @all

Jon Hey-man! just tweeted that Matt Garza was a more valuable commodity than Greinke or Hamels……

  86. If anyone gets a chance to check out the Nats / Giants game tonite, they are wearing uniforms from the 20′s. Kinda neat to see.

  87. @Ryan,

My guess is because Garza still has one year of control left, whereas Greinke and Hamels are UFA’s after this season.

  88. @Playoffs

And his price tag is cheaper as well.

  89. @Ryan,

very true, plus he has shown he can win in the AL East

  90. I think Karstens is my favorite Pirate, though that’s an answer to a silly question. Rock on Jeff, Go Bucs! Did I mention that DK’s blog rocks?

  91. Karstens looks silly tonight, his stuff is crisp and his pitches have great down and in movement. I really think he is the key piece to this rotation as he has shown in flashes he can be a # 3 type guy.

@ Ryan – maybe tonight he grows on you a little more!

  92. How many dents have Pirates hitters put into the Clemente Wall of late? Lead off double by GI Jones, time to take an early lead tonight.

  93. Those who think the Zoltan thing is dumb, I understand. I never saw the movie and so it means nothing to me. The only chance I really have of ever seeing the movie is if the legendary ‘Mystery Science Theater 3000′ (and alumnus) features it on one of their dvds.

But I also had no love whatsoever for disco, (late 70′s), and thought that ‘We are Family’ was a dumb song. Heck, I was listening to Deep Purple & Led Zeppelin in those days (and still am). I would have thought ‘Smoke on the Water’ or ‘Dancin’ Days’ would have made for a much better anthem.

But, if it keeps the players united, and loose and playing better, they can have whatever they want. I’ll play along like I did with Sister Sledge.

  94. Garrett keeps on rollin’ and Casey clubs him home!

  95. I’ve always like Karstens, especially after that day in Milwaukee a couple years ago.

    1-0 Buccos. Here we go!

  96. RBI double for McGehee….how about this stat- 10 of Casey’s 26 RBI’s on the season have come in the last 10 games. Nice to see him heating up!

  97. Nothing like a 5 pitch 1-2-3 inning…that was quick.

  98. Playoffs – Got on too late for tonight’s action, but I’ll take the max on the over for the 2nd half line.

    Go Bucs!

  99. They joke about who can toss the slowest breaking pitch in the locker room. It’s Jeff. He also doesn’t complain if assigned bullpen duty. A working man. Perfect for Pittsburgh, or any squad that’d give him an audition with no preconceived notions.

  100. Neil Walker with a double opposite field, his 17th of the season. In the last 14 games he has raised his avg. from .258 to .277 thanks to a 18-48 clip or .375 stretch!

  101. I hate to say “told ya so”, but the McGeHee aquisition looked brilliant at the time, to me at the time. NH is looking better than Theo Epstein, but he’s got a head start. I’ll take it.

  102. Game of inches, so close to a slam! We’ll take the sac fly though.

  103. GI Jones with Sac Fly to give Bucs two run lead…Jones now has 7 RBI’s in his past four games, 38 for the year.

  104. Casey is smart too!

  105. Hi Y’all.

Listening on SiriusXM and looking forward to a sweltering Saturday afternoon at PNC Park this weekend.

Getting the crew packed up and will be on the way to PGH tomorrow! Can’t wait.

FWIW – we’ll be taking it all in from the GA section.

Let’s get those runs across – take it easy all.

  106. Bob Walk said it didn’t actually hit McGehee, but he acted like it did and the ump bought it. Bill Robinson pulled the same stunt in game 7 of the ’79 world series.

  107. @ Vette60 – Enjoy the game, should be a good one, has been quite awhile since two top division teams have played in the ‘Burgh in July. J-Mac versus Vogelsong should be a good pitching matchup as well!

  108. Sutton is still bangin’ away.

  109. Drew Sutton is going to need a nickname if he keeps this up.

  110. And Sutton hits one off the Clemente Wall to lead off the inning with a double….Walker a walk and now two runners on for Cutch, chance to try and put this one away.

  111. Drew Sutton always makes me think of Frank Sutton, who played Sgt. Carter on Gomer Pyle. Whenever Drew Sutton gets a hit, I always say “‘Py-Le!!” in the same annoyed way Sgt. Carter used to say it. After that pick-off, you can bet I said it again.

  112. Championship teams do not let that stuff happen. They are smarter.

  113. @Playoffs, any chance to get in on the second half wins before this game is over? I haven’t been able to read the above, yet. If I can, I would like to go OVER for 250. Thanks. If not, my loss. Go Bucs!!!!!

  114. I see that now the blog’s fixed, the Bucs are back to their low-scoring ways…

  115. 8 very strong innings by Karstens, 8 Strikeouts too! Only 1 walk & 4 hits given up.
Love to see him get a CG.

  116. He’s only made 89 pitches, I say let Karstens come back out.

  117. Don’t need many runs with this type of pitching on the mound. Jeff Karstens has just carved the Astros hitters up tonight.

  118. I think I’m sending in the Hammer if I’m Clint. That’s the only way the under on line 1 wins…oops…I mean….I don’t want them to take any risks with Karstens’ arm. We’ll need it in September.

  119. Nice job by Karstens so far tonight – great that he is under 90 pitches…

I’d say let him come out…

  120. A guy pitching a shutout deserves to at least start the inning. Bring in a reliever if he falters, but at least let him go for the shutout.

  121. Where’s Karstens???

  122. Would have liked Clint to give Karsty the chance at the CG shutout, now we use Hanrahan for third consecutive game and make him unavailable for first game of Giants series.

Karstens wasn’t even at 90 pitches, don’t get that move.

  123. Hanrahan 3 straight nights instead of letting Karstens try to finish?

    Hope this works out.

  124. And now a lead off walk…hope this move does not back fire.

  125. Matt Capps is back!

  126. Ok, double play ball helps.

  127. All kidding aside, I absolutely agree with you. Karstens should have taken the mound to start the 9th. Hanrahan has been shaky.

  128. Ok…let’s see if the Hammer can drop them. I’d still would have had Karstens come out…

  129. I like Clint but I totally disagree here. Now I’m not even nearly as comfortable with Hanrahan in there. The Astros can’t solve the starter, I keep throwing him at him.
The double play though just helped me breathe again. Good defense!

  130. Wow – the under on the Karstens line won by two pitches.

  131. Geez….SiriusXM is really lagging with the whole deal since you guys are all posting what has happened and I am listening to the Hammer face the first batter!

  132. Hanrahan is done. Ugh.

  133. I’m only listening on the local fm radio network, ‘the fan’. I got rid of my cable last year, can’t afford Comcast’s high prices.

  134. And behind 8 terrific innings turned in by Jeff Karstens tonight the Pirates complete the four game sweep of the Astros and move 10 games above the .500 mark with a 2-0 shutout victory and there was noooooooooooo doubt about it.

The Pirates will begin the final series before the All-Star break tomorrow night against the Giants with Erik Bedard taking the hill in game one of the set.

Let’s Go Bucs and Let’s go Padres and move 2 games up in the standings!

  135. ….fear the Bones….

  136. “Raise it baby!”
Gotta love Greg Brown on the call!

  137. Love the Hammer, glad he got the save, but Karstens should never have been pulled. Bad move by Hurdle.

  138. Playoffs… great line on Karstens’ number of strikes thrown… well done!

Major league best 27-13 home record… team’s good.

  139. NIce job tonight – especially from Kartens! Great home record and how about 10 game above .500!

Looking forward to the Giants series and being there on Saturday!

    Let’s go Bucs!

    Randy via Richmond, VA.

  140. “Hammer Time” has been gradually raising my blood pressure the last couple weeks. Might be time to rest him for a few days.

  141. that home record is really impressive. best in the bigs.

  142. I tend to assume we’re all local Pittsburghers on here. But I see that is not really the case at all. It’s so cool to see the widespread love for baseball and the Pirates in places far from me. and it’s fun to share our mutual enjoyment on Dejan’s blog in real-time.

  143. Got wins from our 4-5 starters for the second straight turn. The Pirates really making a move here. Huge homestand in process. Bedard, McDonald and Burnett coming up. Bedard is due to win one even if It will take 3 1/2 hours.

  144. I think Hurdle had the under on line 1. That;s why Karstens didn;t pitch the 9th.

  145. Ask Teke question from Matt, Shaler. Does he think he is Titleman now? He’s everywhere.

  146. I think the last game Karstens pitched in that awful heat actually toughened him up and got him back to the shape he needs to be in to pitch like he normally does when he’s going good, which is often.

  147. “Bedard is due to win one even if It will take 3 1/2 hours.”

So 22. You’re saying he will only make it through three innings?

You don’t get credit for a win for that.

  148. And so much for the Bud Norris nemesis. He pitched well, but Jeff Karstens pitched evenb better and Garrett Jones & Casey McGehee continue to do what good teams need – guys picking up each other and helping out the big bombers McCutchen & Alvarez on a night when they are just human.

  149. We won, but I get nervous lately when Hanny comes in to pitch. I don’t know why they lifted Karstens anyhow. He deserved to finish the game. Hanrahan couldn’t find the strike zone, and even threw a wild pitch, which put a runner on third. I still think he should throw a few curve balls, if he knows how to throw a curve. GO! BUCS

  150. No humans, Pigsie. N-O H-U-M-A-N-S

    Humans lose occasionally.

  151. KKKKarstens is bacKKKK

  154. Alen Hanson is a 19 year old SS in our system….Maybe you’ve heard a bit about him….Just looked him up….He has 15 homers and is 5’11″and weighs 152 pounds….Are you kidding???….Brock Holt is a smaller dude, as well and is raking in AA……Lots of decent postition players scattered throughout the minors……

  155. Bases loaded for the Padres, bottom of the ninth, tie game…….no outs……Could be 2 games up on the Reds………………..

  156. 2 games up……Good job Padres…………………….
