Looking ahead to first pitch …

Game: Pirates (46-36) vs. San Francisco Giants (45-38)

Time: 7:05 p.m.

Site: PNC Park

TV, radio: Root Sports, 93.7 The Fan

Here is the live box score.

And here is the Pirates’ lineup vs. San Francisco LHP Barry Zito

  1. Josh Harrison, SS
  2. Drew Sutton, RF
  3. Andrew McCutchen, CF
  4. Casey McGehee, 1B
  5. Neil Walker, 2B
  6. Pedro Alvarez, 3B
  7. Rod Barajas, C
  8. Gorkys Hernandez, LF
  9. Erik Bedard, LHP

Couple quick pics from this afternoon …

Cutch? Nope, that’s Harrison at Cutch’s stall, sporting fake dreadlocks in trying to lure reporters his way.

You know where this is going, right?

You know the ONE DUMMY who fell for it?

Anyway, a little later, out on the field, it was 100-plus degrees while pitchers warmed up …

Which explains why most guys were hanging in the dugout shade until absolutely needed …

Third Place at the end of the season will win:
    (1) 2012 Topps Roberto Clemente Card

  2. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Line 1: 100 OVER

    Line 2: 100 UNDER

    Line 3: 100 OVER

  3. JRay3 says:

Well Jones sits versus the LHP and Harrison replaces Barmes in the lineup this evening. Sutton has certainly made an immediate impact and is being thrust into an everyday role.

Sure will be nice after the AS break if we can send Fryer back down, send Mercer back to Indy as he just keeps a seat warm up here and get Marte up and Presley back healthy. Would certainly improve a very weak bench that we carry currently.

STAT OF THE DAY: With the win last night, the Pirates have won four straight a feat they have now done four times this year. Tonight they will look for their first five game winning streak of the year as they are 0-3 when going for the fifth consecutive win.

  4. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

looks like Gorkys and Jones will swap out after the Buccos take it to Zito.

Sutton will switch to LF and Jones in RF, after a pinch hit appearance in the bottom of the 6th.

I better slow down with predictions.

  5. DemonDachshund says:

    @Playoffs –

Line 1: 100 on the UNDER. He’s rocking lefties, but a .600+ OBP is a lot to ask.
Line 2: 100 on the OVER. Tough one, but I think they’ll score a ton on Sunday.
Line 3: 100 on the OVER. I beZieve.

  6. RobertoForever says:

I would have left Jones in. Very good track record vs Zito, 4 game hitting streak, and 2 for 4 against LHP on Wed. Moves like these tend to result in Jones cooling off, maybe shaking his confidence.

Lets hope this is one of those correct pulls of the levers by Clint. Beat em Bucs!

  7. JRay3 says:

@ Playoffs – Good afternoon. Three Play Friday is back on a night the Bucs go for their fifth straight win.

Line 1 – Cutch has only manufactured 3 H + BB in 3 of his last 12 games…in his last game versus a LHP he ended up with one hit. Just going to play the odds here:

    75 on the UNDER

Line 2 – In two of their last three series the Giants have gone UNDER….they are known for having one of the best pitching staffs in baseball and are constructed much like the Bucs of today on pitching and defense. I think this series is going to be a lot of close low scoring affairs.

    100 on the UNDER

Line 3 – In their last six series the Pirates are 5-0-1 with the split being with Philly in a four game set. The Pirates are playing with a confidence and swagger not seen in quite some time. Gotta believe their focus is to finish the first half strong and the 27-13 home record speaks volumes. Packed housed expected at PNC helps.

    100 on the OVER

Thanks so much and Let’s Go Bucs!

  8. tmp444 says:

Very intrigued by the pitching matchups this weekend. Vogelsong returns to the Burg. Does Lincecum have Steve Blass disease? The curveball master himself, Zito, goes tonight.

    With that……..

Line 1: Cutch goes 1 for 4 tonight with a walk. 75 on the UNDER
Line 2: Buccos avg. 5 runs a game this weekend. 50 on the OVER
Line 3: Bucs take Sat and Sun after losing tonight: 100 on the OVER

O/U on attendance this weekend at 110K?

  9. Bizrow says:

Playoff another excellent line that keeps kicking my keister (and CRAP! I note that AW is doing the same right now…..)

100 nuclear chips on OVAH for all three lines

  10. crkkid says:

    @ playoffs

Line #1: 50 units on the under…..per Demon + I think he cools down a little.

    Line #2: 100 units on the over….I think we score 5,3 & 6.

Line #3: 100 units on the over….2 out of 3.

  11. Evan says:

    1 – 50 on the over
    2 – 50 in the under
    3 -100 on the over

  12. manny _sanguine says:

    Line 1 – 50 under
    Line 2 – 50 under
    Line 3 – 100 over

  13. Kevin says:

    Playoffs –
Much tougher than Houston (goes without saying, I know). I still think we take this series as well, just not sure enough to put anything on that line!

Line 1: 100 on the UNDER

Line 2: 100 on the UNDER

    Thank you.

  14. MarkV says:

    Line 1 – 50 on the UNDER
    Line 2 – 50 on the UNDER
    Line 3 – 75 on the OVER

    Thanks. Beat em Bucs!

  15. Milo66 says:

100 on the OVER on all 3

    Go Bucs!

  16. pattonbb says:

Well, well, well….look whose name is at the top of the list. How in the world did that happen?

Don’t worry, I won’t be there long. Way too emotionally invested with may make-believe wagering.

On that note, Playoffs, if I may..

    Line 1 – 100 OVER
    Line 2 – 100 UNDER
    Line 3 – 100 OVER

I don’t care what their numbers say, the Giants pitching staff can be flat out filthy. Timmy looked good against the Dodgers before getting rocked by the Nats. Zito’s curve tends to hang a little higher than it should, and Vogelsong…oustide of Cain, he’s probably their top guy. I think we can take 2 of 3 but these should be tight games.

  17. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Either way, you and I will have no separation…….

  18. SlackBoss says:

    @playoffs – line #1 – 100 over

    Line #2 – 100 under

    Line #3 – 100 under

    Let’s go Bucs !

Anybody going to the game on Sunday?

  19. Arriba Wilver says:

I’m going away from my time tested strategy of being conservative on the amounts of fake units (which has me at -35), and betting the farm on my uneducated picks.

    Line # 1. 100 on the UNDER

    Line # 2. 100 on the UNDER

    Line # 3. 100 on the OVER

No longer will I play Not to Lose ! (at least until tomorrow)

  20. radio wave says:

    at playoffs:
I’ll take 100 on the under for line 1.
I’ll go with 100 on the over for both lines 2 and 3.

  21. bob hasis says:

Lines 1 and 2, I would like to go UNDER on both for 50 each

    Thank you

  22. pattonbb says:

@Ryan – Cheater? How can the guy in 1st place be a cheater? :)

I know what you mean, though. I almost went over on line 2 just to make things interesting, but couldn’t bring myself to do it.

    Line #3
Total Pirates Wins This Weekend Against San Francisco
    Line is 1.5

    Under for 100

  24. dcpfjr says:

    after considerable tarot card reading…

    line 1: 100 fake units on the over (1 H, 2 IBBs)
line 2: 100 fake units on the under (this is July, not June)
line 3: 100 fake units and 1,000,000 virtual units on the over.

  25. Naje says:

    Line #1: over …. Line #2: over

    Thank you!

  26. Bradster says:

    What is up with Leroux?

DK: Hurdle said the team will announce it at some point soon. Said it was settled, whatever that meant. I’d expect maybe you’ll hear later.

  27. Naje says:

Well, that would be 100 fake units on each line… sorry. And thank you.

  28. stuart66 says:

Please give me the over on #1 and #3, and the under on #2. I will wager 25 rubles on each.

    Stuart 66

  29. Bradster says:

DK – thank you and saw Moskos to the White Sox, next is Slaten’s move.

  30. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I was just kidding on the cheater part….

  31. Mlrgenuine says:

@Playoffs – Gotta go big this weekend.

    Line #1 – 100 on the OVER
    Line #2 – 100 on the OVER
    Line #3 – 100 on the OVER

    Let’s Go Bucs!

  32. Nate83 says:

Line 1: 100 on the under

Line 2: 50 on the over

Line 3: 75 on the over

  33. JAL says:

    Thanks for the pictures.

    DK: My pleasure, Joe!

  34. Chico says:

Line 1: 50 on the under
Line 2: 100 on the under
Line 3: 50 on the over

  35. Jay G -Jacksonville FL via New Castle says:

We can take 2 of 3 from them this weekend…..We will get Marte up and Presley back after the break….We will be stronger, for sure…..Was looking at our AAA starting line up the other day….Tabata, d’Arnaud, Marte, Hague, Clement, Navarro, Sanchez and Brian Friday…..It wasn’t that long ago that that was the equivilant to our starting 8 in PGH…….And the pitching has been great in Indy, as well…….Looking up, for sure….This is why we are winning….Talant at all levels…..and positions……

  36. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

This heat could be the Bucs 26th man.

SF, for those that don’t know is ALWAYS cool, 50-60 degrees year round and the wind makes it even more colder.

SF just got swept by the Nationals in this type of weather and…..Mr. Timmy did not fair so well.

  37. RobertoForever says:

Would love to go with the emotional play, but the trends look tough this weekend.

Line 1 – I think Cutch gets 2 hits, but that leaves me 100 under.

Line 2 – Bucs offense is hot. Giants pitchers are very tough, rivaling the Bucs.I think there is a fair chance the Bucs offense blows a game open. But this trends to 3 tough low-scoring games. I’ll take 50 on the under.

Line 3 – Much as I like to think the Bucs will never lose again, this bet is 50-50. The Bucs are due for a stumble, before they tear through a bunch of teams under .500, so I will go under 25, hoping the Bucs make me waste these units.

    Beat em Bucs!

  38. bman says:

Line 1: 70 on the UNDER
Line 2: 80 on the UNDER

  39. jeffsbar says:

    Line 1 – 100 on the under
    Line 2 – 100 on the over
    Line 3 – 100 on the over

    Thank you.

  40. Mlrgenuine says:

I just wanted to send a big thanks for doing the Over/Under everyday. It has really made watching the games a lot of fun. Your efforts are truly appreciated.

DK—I know you really can’t, but you really should join Playoffs’ over/ under. Last night I was at the game with a couple of blog initiated friends, and while I didn’t bet on the line on Karstens’ over / under because I didn’t want to be watching it, I was still totally aware of it, especially in the 8th. If you do good, it would burnish your credentials, and if you did bad, we could make fun of you. Win-Win!

@AW, its bad enough that you, DemonDachshund (and believe me Buddy is a DemonDachshund) and the venerable Ossifer are kicking my keister. Dejan doing the same would be too much ;-)

  46. Arriba Wilver says:

Biz—you’re still ahead of me, my friend. Not that that’s anything to brag about.

  49. Playoffs by 2012 says:

    @Mlr, DK and ALL,

Thank you. It’s been a lot of fun for me doing the OVER / UNDER every day, and I’m glad everyone has enjoyed it just as much as I have. I’m hoping to be doing the OVER / UNDER well into October this year. Thanks again for the kind words.

  50. Jay Jax Fl via New Castle says:

Good start Bedard. Let’s go lumber…..!!!!!

  51. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Window is officially closed. Thank you to all who played.

    GO BUCS!!

  52. JRay3 says:

After lead off walk, Bedard settles in nicely inducing the DP ball and another ground out. Big start for Bedard this evening would like for him to go into break with some momentum.

@ Milo Hamilton – welcome back…hope you enjoyed the Bucs win that you were in attendance for the other day!

  53. Milo Hamilton says:

Thanks. Two wins, saw last night’s game also.

  54. JRay3 says:

JHay taking advantage of the spot start by lining a lead off single to left. I actually like Clint giving Jones the night off with LHP to give Harrison some AB’s as Josh is a regular on the bench and need to keep him sharp as it appears he will be a bench piece all year.

Three straight hits as Sutton and Cutch lace singles and Bucs all over Zito early.

  55. Milo Hamilton says:

Good sign with Walker, seems to be walking a lot more lately.

  56. pattonbb says:

C’mon Pedro. Time to add to that rbi total.

  57. Drew71 says:

Hurdle just signaled to get Hanrahan ready to come in next inning.

  58. TDB1977 says:

Ugh. Needed to have more then just one run this inning. At least Zito had to pitch close to 30 that inning.

  59. JRay3 says:

Takes Zito 27 pitches to get thru the first.

  60. pattonbb says:

oh well…Zito needed 26 pitches to get out of the 1st. Make him work.

  61. pattonbb says:

  62. JRay3 says:

Clean inning for Bedard and he looks very sharp early, breaking ball looks especially tough.

  63. TDB1977 says:

Nice to see Bedard not working the count that high through 2. Only 26 pitches thrown. Would be excellent if Zito threw another 20 to 25 pitches this half inning.

  64. Officer Mancuso says:

The way I like to get the stripped down version of the live box score is by going to It’s broken. I’m guessing the traffic’s unusually high, Friday night, two games up.

  65. TDB1977 says:

    Nice catch by Gorkys.

  66. JRay3 says:

I think that catch by Gorkys fully demonstrates his value to the team…the organization was not kidding when they stated he may be best defensive player in system.

  67. RobertoForever says:

    Welcome back, Milo!

Hope you had a great 4th. Ring any cowbells at the game?

  68. Officer Mancuso says:

Ah, Bedard rocking so far, and Cutch really looking like the future hall of famer I thought I saw when he was first called up, and later decided I’d had a naive over-reaction to rookie success.

This winning is just too confusing.

  69. pattonbb says:

good Lord….just amazing. Why is anyone pitching to Cutch?

  70. TDB1977 says:

The lumber company is at it again tonight!

  71. Naje says:

One of the great gifts of baseball of any era: McCutchen taking three bases.

So many words to describe it… perfect is one of them.

  72. TDB1977 says:

I see the D’backs are open to a trade for Justin Upton. Any thoughts about adding him to the Pirates? He would be under control until 2015.

  73. twentytwo22 says:

  74. RobertoForever says:

Right?! Good lord, how can anyone not think he is the most dangerous hitter in all of baseball right now.

  75. pattonbb says:

    Tied game….sheesh….

  76. Drew71 says:

    NOW we’re gonna see Hanrahan

  77. RobertoForever says:

    Beard, ouch. Just ouch

  78. JRay3 says:

For as good as Bedard was the first three he has been equally as bad in the fourth as he giveth the three spot right back…another lead off walk sets the tone for inning.

Two walks in same inning just not acceptable.

@ TDB – having seen a lot of Justin Upton out here in AZ I would gladly take him in a Pirates uniform…just the thought of a Cutch, Upton OF one can imagine.

  79. RobertoForever says:

    Bedard, that is. Stupid auto-correct.

  80. twentytwo22 says:

The Pirates aren’t in a position to have to carry a 30 something pither with a 4.50 ERA anymore. I am sick of looking at Bedard and feel like he doesn’t want to be on the mound pitching. I would be happy to oblige him. 9 losses on a team 10 over doesn’t lie.

  81. Milo Hamilton says:

Thanks Roberto. No cowbells, but plenty of fireworks after victories.

  82. pattonbb says:

@TBD – Count me as one who’d love to see Upton in a Pirate uniform. Just can’t imagine what the D’backs would want in return.

Bedard is really struggling. Needs another double play right here.

  83. DemonDachshund says:

    @TDB1977 –

While I’d love to see a guy like Upton in RF for the Bucs, not sure they can afford the $40M+ over the next 3.5 years plus the prospect haul it would take to get him.

Before anyone says it, that’s not a “OMG these guys are cheap” accusation… The reality of the team’s market is probably somewhere in the neighborhood of $70M/year salary max, and committing 20% of that to one guy not named McCutchen may be hard to do.

  84. TDB1977 says:

Bedard is responsible for a quarter of the Pirates losses this year. 9 out of the 36 belong to him.

  85. Milo Hamilton says:

    Bullpen ? Anyone ?

  86. twentytwo22 says:

Bedard is this team’s Walt Terrell. He is the black cloud hanging over the team. They found Randy Tomlin to replace Terrell and I would look to a naive rookie like Owens who throws strikes. You can brainwash a rookie to just get the ball, take the sign, and throw.

  87. Reading says:

  88. TDB1977 says:

From – Rosenthal says GM Kevin Towers is open to any type of deal, meaning they could buy, sell, or make a veteran-for-veteran swap that helps now. So maybe it wouldnt take much to make that deal?

  89. TDB1977 says:

But they would target a third baseman in return.

  90. twentytwo22 says:

You want your fielders to stand around for 20 minutes and then play spotless defense. Not gonna happen.

  91. pattonbb says:

Might be time to make a call to the pen.

  92. twentytwo22 says:

This better be the last game this SOB ever pitches with the Pirates. I’m sick of his act. It’s not that he pitches bad, it’s that it takes him soooo damn long just to suck. GO AWAY You don’t belong here. Go back to the AL.

  93. JRay3 says:

Thank you Clint….that was painful to sit through…I hope we can add or call up a SP as he is a weak link.

Upton was quoted as saying he did not care what the fans think of him and it has caused quite the stir out here, he may have just worn out his welcome in AZ…I hope at least we make a call.

  94. DemonDachshund says:

No, they’ll consider moving Upton if they fall out of contention, and try to pick up a 3B if they think they can compete.

Maybe the Bucs could take him for the next 1.5 years when he has reasonable salaries and move him along if needed in 2014 when he jumps up to $14M/year.

Just figuring by then, you’ll be paying Cutch and need to find the money for JMac and Pedro in arbitration.

  95. Milo Hamilton says:

It must be like night & day playing behind Karstens one night, then Bedard the next.

  96. RobertoForever says:

Haha, somehow I think if Barmes had made that error, it wouldn’t have been shrugged off or blamed on the pitcher. ;)

  97. Boise Bucco says:

@twentytwo22…if I recall correctly, they called up Randy Tomlin from AA too…guess who else is in AA…RUMOR TIME GO

  98. Jason81 says:

That error should be blamed on Bedard for making his fielders stand around while he looks at the signs like he’s never seen them before.

  99. twentytwo22 says:

The Pirates are going to win this game despite their SP.

  100. pattonbb says:

Lots of runs to be scored yet.

Nice sac by Resop. Almost forgot what those look like. Haven’t needed them lately. :)

  101. Boise Bucco says:

Not really about the Bucs, but the Orioles are crazy if they think they can get Greinke and not give up Machado or Bundy. Milwaukee’s gonna pull some top prospects if they trade him. Same with Seattle and Felix Hernandez. There’s no such thing as “off the market” with those guys.

  102. DemonDachshund says:

It’s strange seeing a 2 run deficit and thinking that there’s still plenty of time left.

  103. pattonbb says:

Bedard’s first start after the break will probably tell the tale for him. Lets see what he can do then. But I agree, might be time to give Owens or Wilson a shot. Or maybe look outside the system.

  104. pattonbb says:

    there’s one back!

  105. Milo Hamilton says:

Chris Leroux & Doug Slaten have both cleared waivers and been sent to Indy. Didn’t lose either of them.

  106. JRay3 says:

Resop 7 up 7 down….way to come in and steady the ship.

  107. Boise Bucco says:

    Wow, way to go Resop!

  108. JRay3 says:

@ Milo – thanks for passing that info along good to hear of the three we made moves with only Moskos gone.

  109. RobertoForever says:

Resop great tonight. 7 outs, 22 pitches.

    Lets go bats.

DK: No one ever remembers anything good that Chris Resop does. He’s become the modern-day Brian Boehringer.

  110. pattonbb says:

    We have a Mercer sighting!

  111. Arriba Wilver says:

Thinking back to DL starting his last year picking Moskos over Weiters and ending it picking up all of Morris’ salary when the most recently hired PNC North Shore employee knew the Giants were willing to pick up at least some of Morris’ remaining contract, just makes me wish they could fire him again.

  112. Milo Hamilton says:

One at bat for Garrett Jones in the 6th inning ? Feh.

  113. Drew71 says:

Did SOMEone mention the GM Who Shall Not Be Mentioned?

Did SOMEone mention the Orioles Catcher Who Shall Not Be Mentioned?

Milo. I need to borrow your “Feh”.

  114. RobertoForever says:

I figured that Cruz would be the first one traded. I’ll bet that NH wishes had traded Juan back in May.

Man I hate how he has fallen off.

  115. RobertoForever says:

And they are STILL pitching to him. C’mon Casey and Neil, make em pay!

  116. JRay3 says:

Bullpen doing its job tonight….now how about a bloop and a blast?

  117. Mike Shigley says:

Not to cast more gloom but Rudy Owens got pounded tonight. Lasted fewer than four innings and gave up 6 earned runs.

  118. Drew71 says:

    DFA him

  119. Milo Hamilton says:

Sure like this Lopez. We could use a guy like that.

  120. pattonbb says:

El Toro gets one back! Where did that one land?

  121. Milo Hamilton says:

    Oops. :)

  122. JRay3 says:

    Well there is the blast!

  123. Arriba Wilver says:

Wonder what Smizik will say about Lopez tomorrow?

  124. RalphM says:

How about a blast, a bloop, and another blast!

  125. Milo Hamilton says:

This George Kontos was one of the guys originally slated to come to Pittsburgh in the Xavier Nady trade.

  126. Milo Hamilton says:

457 feet for Pedro. Wasn’t that left-center at Forbes Field ?

    DK: To the millimeter.

  127. JRay3 says:

If you remember, Kontos we almost had along with Phil Coke…instead opted for Karstens and Daniel McCutchen in that trade couple years back with Yankees.

  128. Milo Hamilton says:

Of course we did have Chris Kontos, unfortunately.

  129. Milo Hamilton says:

Gorkys doing that, and Garrett Jones has already showered. SMH.

  130. twentytwo22 says:

Don’t be doing the wave with your team down 6-5 in the 8th inning. Noobs.

  131. Milo Hamilton says:

Frankly, Brad Lincoln’s the best option to pinch hit here.

  132. TDB1977 says:

Pinch hitter gets on and Drew Sutton comes up with another walk off home run. :)

  133. Arriba Wilver says:

Hughes still looks like he’s thinking about a nice chianti and fava beans when he’s pitching.

  134. JRay3 says:

Tough loss tonight…to have that five run half inning back…Pirates now 1-6 in Bedard’s last seven starts something definitely to keep an eye on.

  135. pattonbb says:

@ Arriba post #135 – My wife (who knows very little about baseball, much less Pirates) said, “that guy looks like he should be in a movie chasing teenagers with a big knife”.

  136. Arriba Wilver says:

Playoffs —feel free to take 200 off for me betting against Cutch against a lefthander.

  137. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Time to give Cruz his walking papers. He should have gotten the loss, even though Bedard stunk it up and deserved to get the loss as well. Cruz should have been awarded a runner-up loss.
It’s in these games where calling up Gorkys instead of Marte (and even Fryer instead of Clement) really shows to be the bad management that it is.

Bounce Cruz outta here and take Gorkys with him.

  138. Arriba Wilver says:

A little harsh, Pig Legs, IMO. We’re gonna lose some games, even by one run, even after Marte gets called up after the All Star break.

  139. twentytwo22 says:

Looked up Walt Terrible. His last start for the Pirates was July 7, 1990. I remember watching his start on tv June 15 against the Mets at Three Rivers. He was BOOOOED off the mound.

Before tonight, they had identical 16 Games Started and 82.2 Innings Pitched.

    STAT Terrell Bedard

  140. Arriba Wilver says:

Pattonbb– make sure you show your wife some scenes with Son of, I mean Hughes, in the club house, he’s a sweetheart of a guy. :-)

  141. twentytwo22 says:

They turned to Rick Reed after that, and then there was a DH where Reed and Tomlin started. From that point on Randy Tomlin took over. He gave them a legitimate .500 starter. That’s all the Pirates need right now. Bedard gives them no chance of winning.

  142. pghboyinca says:

Cutch is other worldly, Pedro is maturing and looks to be ready to stay , Walker is solid. The pitching is outstanding. Now explain this, 2 games up going into the all star break and all the momentum on our side. 1 run game and the best we can do is in hte 8th and 9th is Gorky’s , Mercer, and Fryer??? That is a disgrace. There is not one of them that belongs on a contenders roster. We have ar eal chance to get into the playoffs and we have that bench? Seriously?

  143. Drew71 says:

    I don’t understand.

I thought we agreed that the Pirates would never lose again?

  144. Drew71 says:

    Where’s Dejan.

(You can never find a Kovacevic when you need one.)

Dejan. You need to explain this to us.

You were on board with this never-lose-again thingee, weren’t you?

    Weren’t You??

Geezum Crow, it was your idea, man!

  145. Drew71 says:

    Somebody go poke the bear.

By the way. Is this thing on?

  146. Naje says:

Hearing you loud and clear Drewsie….

You know, some people just forget that Gorkys is here because of an injury to Presley. And Fryer’s here because of a mild injury to Barajas. And Mercer is here because no one wants Tabata.

You get what you get right now. At least for two more games… changes will be made and soonishly. Bedard, Cruz and probably a few others may well be moved in the near future.

  147. Drew71 says:

    Ah. Fresh meat.

BTW, I get your baseball points. Not so sure they’ll move Bedard anytime soon despite recent performance. He’d probably have to be pitching better, AND not be needed, to be of much value to another team (pitching better), and for the Pirates to be willing to part (not needed). But the Pirates will be buyers this year, not sellers, and no one is going to give up what the Pirates need for Bedard.

But otherwise, yes, I may not VALUE Fryer and Mercer and Gorkys. But I understand them. As long as I understand them leaving soon.

  148. Naje says:

Drew, please don’t come at me with any Hughes-type stares and demands for chianti and fava beans (copywright AW from above)…

I don’t think Bedard will be traded as much as he might be released if his next two starts continue trending like his two month spiral. Cruz is another DFA candidate with the arms available on the farm. Could be a Hague or Clement sighting after the ASB in place of Fryer. And Marte on the horizon as well. And all indications are that an arm or two (I’m guessing a starter and a reliever) are being sought as well as a bat…

So there won’t be 54 guys getting time with the big club this year. And that’s good.

  149. Drew71 says:

Don’t worry about AW. It’s 8:58. He won’t be up for another four hours. At least.

I would put Marte to the front of your list rather than the back.

  150. Drew71 says:

Diamondbacks GM Kevin Towers appears to be fanning the flames that he’d consider moving 24 yr old Justin Upton. The right fielder is wrapped up through 2015 and while not cheap, it is not outlandish. And there is cost- and time-certainty with the contract.

Upton is having an off year so far (.267 BA, .350 OBP, 7 HRs) but the two time All Star came in 4th in last season’s MVP voting after hitting 31 HRs with 21 stolen bases. Also has a career .832 OPS.

    Ok. Dreaming.

  151. Naje says:

What is this, Smizik’s blog? How dare you propose an outfield of Cutch, Marte and Upton…wake-up silly man, it might could happen.

  152. Drew71 says:

Oh, does Smizik have a blog?

You’d never know it by me.

  153. LuckyNKentucky says:

So who do you trade for Upton? They aren’t gonna take Drew’s ceiling for the guy.

  154. Drew71 says:

Let’s send them Cruz and Bedard.

    That oughta do it.

  155. LuckyNKentucky says:

I think your ceiling, before it was fixed, may be of more value. Seriously, who do we send? Rudy Owens got pasted last night, really for the first time all season. Locke is still pitching well, as is Wilson, but we may need them all soon. What other trade chips do we have? They probably don’t need Clement, although he would be attractive to an AL club.

  156. Drew71 says:

They supposedly want an impact 3B, but that’s not gonna happen.

Everyone wants pitching. That’s the area of strength within the organization.

Upton will be chased. A decent young AAA pitcher with potential but a limited, um, ceiling won’t get it done. Think SERIOUS prospect pitcher.

Yes. One of those two or three guys.

Plus someone who can play outfield now to fill their gap. They’d ask for Marte but that would be ridiculous. Pirates would offer Tabata but that would be ridiculous the other way, especially at that price. Maybe something in between.

Not interested now? Understand if that’s the case. But that’s about what it would take.

  157. LuckyNKentucky says:

That’s how this farm system was supposedly built. Might be a good time to see if it holds true. Nice to talk about buying for 2 years in a row, especially a guy with a high, um, ceiling like Upton instead of a 38-year old rental. I wouldn’t give up Marte or any of the 3 musketeers, Taillon, Cole or Heredia.

  158. Drew71 says:

    Josh Willingham? Carlos Quentin?

Quentin is a half-year rental who is, so far, not having a banner year. Would take less.

JW is 33, in the beginning of a three year contract and playing very well. Doesn’t fit the Pirates’ mold. In any sense of mold. They like acquiring older guys, but only when they are 3-4 years past effectiveness. (Or injured. Or fat.)

  159. Bizrow says:

Drew, there is an article about PSU on ESPN.

Didn’t read it, but the headlines/lead in does not look promising.

Just letting you know there is newer info out there, not trying to start any discussion.

Are you going to let me pledge to your Altzheimers fund this year?

  160. RobertoForever says:

Willingham is off the market. The Twins are not entertaining offers on him. Span is available, if you want to give up Hanrahan.

Personally, I think that had Jones been in there behind McGehee, that we would have won that game. Or maybe even if he had left Jones in, instead of only PH once. How do you take your second hottest hitter and sit him. Oh, and J-hay cost us the same run that Cruz did.

Need J-Mac to be the stopper today. I hope they set up the rotation as J-mac, AJ then AJ, J-Mac after the break.

  161. JRay3 says:

Still feeling the sting of the loss last night, the best cure a win this afternoon. Looking back Bedard has some serious issues, an ERA hovering around 8 in June and July and the Bucs just not winning any game he starts. We have now been unable to win five straight four times and the weak link is surfacing. I don’t know how much more time we can give him. But I feel it is time to recall a AAA arm of externally find an available SP as you can not throw games away in a pennant race of they will come back to bite you.

A lot of talk about the bench…hopefully we all get some answers after the All-Star break. Fryer and Mercer have to go, as for Gorkys I am ok with keeping him as a late inning defensive replacement as he offers value there, especially if we add Marte and get Presley back than we OF bats.

JHay did cost the team a run last night but let’s also remember he was 2-2 with a walk and scored two runs last night and was very productive with the bat.

  162. Chuck H says:

The way the Pirates are playing, Bedard does not belong . He carries 1/4 of the Bucs total losses. You must also blame Hurtle for staying with Bedard too long. As the manager, he should see that the Giants were teeing off on him in the fourth inning, and as good as we have been lately, we’re not a shoo-in to come back with enough runs to win. We still have way too many automatic outs on this team. Let’s turn it around and take two from the GIANTS this weekend.

  163. bob hasis says:

I think our offense is showing it can handle the job, providing the manager – that would be one Clint Hurdle – utilizes them correctly as was mentioned just above that he didn’t.

JHay is a player, but with VERY little time to react, if he had taken just one step forward, he would have caught a line drive. With his natural aggressiveness, I am surprised he didn’t. That was a HUGE play in the game

JHay adds so much more to the lineup than does Barmes, in any situation. And HIS bat might be the one everyone seems to think we need.

I agree about Gorkys and his defense – keep him. Remember he caught a ball in “the notch” that Cutch couldn’t catch up with, so it seemed on TV.

We lost a game in which we scored 5 runs. A rarity for this team.

  164. LuckyNKentucky says:

Correct as usual, Mr. JRay. The Bucs must at least consider a change with Bedard. Everyone is ready to eat Correia alive, but he’s given us a better chance to win than Bedard lately. I think I’d leave Lincoln in the pen and bring someone up or in.

  165. Drew71 says:

Biz, read it, along with the SI coverage. Waiting for the Freeh report before getting worked up about the stories. I am sure there will be plenty of bombs, plenty to discuss.

Also, yes, will get my Walk to End Alzheimer’s Virtual Team fired up again next month.

  166. Drew71 says:

I just gotta call from Smizik. He took exception to my earlier post. Although he said I made a valid point.

He said that my comment was nasty. But said some might disagree.

He said I spend too much time on blogs. Then he said he appreciates that I do.

He told me to go pound salt. Then said have a nice day.
