  2. JMB says:

    Victorino talk —

    Buster Olney ‏@Buster_ESPN
Shane Victorino would fit many teams –CLE, PIT, maybe NYY, etc — but it’s unclear whether anyone would give PHI value equal to draft pick.

    Buster Olney ‏@Buster_ESPN
Rival teams say the Phillies’ asking price for Shane Victorino is very, very high right now.

I actually hope the Reds overpay for him.

  3. JMB says:

Victorino doesn’t really appeal to me.

@JMB, I wonder if the Reds have any good prospects left to able to get Victorino.

    DK: Ha!

  4. Thundercrack says:

JMB Your comment is awaiting moderation.

Victorino doesn’t really appeal to me.

@JMB, I wonder if the Reds have any good prospects left to able to get Victorino.

    OOPS. :-)

I typed the wrong name in. Who am I?

  5. JRay3 says:

Where is Marte? Presley back Tuesday that helps a little….Sutton can’t be expected to play everyday. Dempster throws another very good game today…could use another top of the rotation SP….where is our bat NH? Tied for first need to make a move games start to get a little more tense now.

Ok deep breath…let’s get our first win of the second half tonight! Go Bucs!

  6. Mike C. says:

Philly must be out of their minds, according to the asking prices of the players they’re trying to sell. Especially with the new CBA.

Question : Who are you rooting AGAINST this weekend, Cinci or St.Louis?
for me the redbirds scare me more for some reason, especially with guys like Berkman coming back.

  7. JMB says:

I thought Drew said that you were really DK’s other side a la Harvey Dent, and now you’re trying to be me. HAHA.

I don’t really love the flyin’ Hawaiian either, but I know a bunch of posters want him — thinking he is easily, cheaply acquirable.

  8. LuckyNKentucky says:

Cards have more .300 hitters in their lineup with double digit HR’s than the law allows, but their pitching isn’t as good as ours right now. Cincy has some holes, but if Rolen picks it up, they could be dangerous. A stick and arm is really all we need for the stretch run. I say THIS IS OUR TIME!

  9. JRay3 says:

@ MikeC – interesting question….looking at schedules the Cards have a much more difficult back half than the Reds in my estimation so I’m rooting for the Cards.

  10. Thundercrack says:

If we’re going to trade for a hitter I probably would like a guy who has more power than Victorino.

  11. Boise Bucco says:

Guess I can’t really complain about the lineup, they did put up 7 last night against Greinke. Here’s hoping McGehee found his slumpbuster, I know he had to have been ticked off after last night. Glad to see Hurdle threw him right back in there.

  12. radio wave says:

    Reds 1-0 in fifth.

  13. JRay3 says:

In an ideal world either Presley or Tabata would seize the lead off spot and the team could focus on a power bat to give protection to Cutch and bolster the middle of line-up as not sold McGehee and Jones can carry that load through season’s end.

    Playoffs –

Stickin’ with the OVER for 100, please.

  18. Chico says:

100 on the over – thanks!

  19. Mike C. says:

@playoffs – 100 for OVER for me. thanx

Tabata and Presley as a whole has been a disappointment this year. and personally I had high hopes for both of em.
I wouldn’t have minded an OF consisting of 3 guys with low power but high speed + high OBP.

  20. radio wave says:

Reds 2-1 still top of 7.

  21. T.S. says:

What a defensive outfield. A prime strip steak between two butchers.

  33. JRay3 says:

    Mr. Playoffs,
100 fake units on the OVER pls

  36. bob hasis says:

Let me have 50 on the OVER 4.5 runs

    Thank you

  37. Drew71 says:

Cincy and St Louis tied at 2 in the 9th.

    Don’t care who wins.

Just want it to go 20 innings and turn their bullpen arms into silly putty.

  38. Playoffs by 2012 says:

  39. RobertoForever says:

50 on the under if not too late, please.

    Miggy says Hi.

  40. Bizrow says:

Well, that kinda stunk for a start

  41. JRay3 says:

Needed to put the ball in play there Pedro…hope the Fort picks him up.

  42. That K of Pedro aided by a horrible 2nd strike call by the ump. Ball didn’t even curve into the zone, and he called it a strike. Come on Mikey!

  43. JRay3 says:

1st and 3rd and 0 out and it is now up to Barmes after Fort swings at ball 4

  44. JMB says:

  45. Mike Shigley says:

Well a bad start to the evening. Taillon got whacked tonight. Only 4 2/3 but 6 runs (all earned), 6 hits, 4 walks, and 2 strikeouts. 99 pitches and 55 strikes. Cole is starting tonight too — 23 pitches in his first (shutout) inning.

  46. JRay3 says:

Wasted inning to get nothing after runners on corners no one out…have to be able to chip in something there.

  47. Mr. Pop-up at least breaks the K streak for Estrada. Way to go Clint! Didn’t see much of the first inning due to forgetting that it was a 7:15 start, but this ump has a big zone for the Brewers 0-3 pitcher.

  48. Reds walk off in bottom of 10 to win 3-2, now we are .5 game back.

  49. radio wave says:

    Reds win

  50. Slick says:

When is the free preview again?

  51. JRay3 says:

Ludwick walk off HR for Reds have to win to remain tied for first.

  52. twentytwo22 says:

Why is Kevin Correia our #2 starter?

  53. I’m going to try my negative reinforcement technique and say game over after those back to back extra base hits after we can’t even score from third with NO out. Come on Bucs, get your heads, bats, and throws in the game. Now down 2-0 AGAIN in Milwaukee.

  54. JRay3 says:

Well how many times do you see this, fail to produce in your half of inning and than opposition makes you pay. Down two early, where are the first half Bucs?

  55. Eric Bowser says:

Second half of season had to start in Milwaukee didn’t it?

  56. Kevin says:

Direct TV has it this weekend as I understand it, Slick

  57. Eric Bowser says:

Pirates can’t hit a straight fastball tonight

  58. JRay3 says:

How do you make an 0-2 mistake to Cutch? thanks Marco we needed it!

  59. Eric Bowser says:

Why are you throwing anything near the plate 0-2 on McCutchen?

Teams and pitchers are not learning.

  60. Bizrow says:

Thats 20 for him, right? Whats his career high?

  61. bob hasis says:

Anybody care to defend Alvarez on that pathetic, lazy effort. He HAD to be sure that ball stayed in the infield, and hope to get one out. I thought Vandy grads were scholarly

  62. DemonDachshund says:

Eh, it was Aramis running and the bag was right there. Knock it down and keep it in front of you, and you’ve got a reasonable shot at 2. 1 for sure, and that likely keeps it a tied game.

  63. Bizrow says:

    Nine strikeouts isn’t helping either

  64. RalphM says:

    23 last year

  65. Bizrow says:

    Thanks Ralph

  66. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Something tells me (let’s call it a hunch) that Pedro is beginning his March to the Mendoza.

  67. Anyone know Estrada’s career high in Ks in a game? I think it is tonight, but I don’t know. Haven’t been watching for the last couple innings. Had to put the little one to bed after playing a game. In any case, at this pace and probably the way the Bucs are approaching the ABs, he will have his career night for Ks in a game.

  68. From the “They Never Learn” Department, there have been two walks total in the game – one for each team. Both have come around to score. Our’s was Walker who scored on Cutch’s HR. Their’s was Cry Baby Braun after a Sac Fly. Walks Kill. Bad Defense also kills, and that is why we find the Bucs down by two now. Come on Bats!

  69. Bizrow says:

    His career high is 12

  70. Bizrow says:

    Estrada is at 90 pitches

  71. Bizrow says:

    Thats 10

  72. JRay3 says:

Good gosh that pitch was a foot outside come on! High is a strike, low is a strike and obviously in the other batter box as well. horrible.

  73. twentytwo22 says:

Here is the team W/L record for McDonald-Burnett back-to-back starting June 9-10 when they were 30-27.

    June 9-10 2-0
    15-16 1-1
    21-22 2-0
    27-28 2-0
    July 2-3 2-0
    7-8 2-0

    18-10 record.

We’ll see… but their best pitchers started 41.7% of those games. Smart.

  74. Bizrow says:

101 pitches, get this guy NOW!

  75. JMB says:

    nice job!

  76. Come on Pedro, Hit a dang breaking ball FAR. Or McKenry if they walk Pedro.

  77. Bizrow says:

If Estrada pitches to Pedro, except to throw 4 wide ones, they just hired JR as their manager

  78. Bucs fighting the Umps now.

  79. Bizrow says:

  80. JD says:

Man, Pedro is getting squeezed tonight. Come on, Fort!

  81. Bud must be making concessions to the Umps Association. Why else would they be giving so generously to the Brewers tonight. We need to get to their bullpen now that Mr. Cy Young (with aid from the umps) is out of the game.

  82. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Pedro with 3 K’s already tonight. Not to mention. Watch out Mr. Mendoza, the correction is a comin’

  83. JRay3 says:

Pedro having a night to forget, twice failing to get runner in from third less than 2 out….this Ump is awful.

  84. Eric Bowser says:

amazingly, Correia gets through 6 innings

  85. Poz says:

The strike zone has been wide all game. All the more reason to be up there swinging with two strikes. And it looked like the pitch that got Pedro was close. Should have been swinging.

  86. JRay3 says:

Typical Correia start, nothing flashy, not dominant but just enough o keep us in ballgame.

Barmes with lead-off hit and second on error, get him in!

  87. Drew71 says:

I was just going to post something about waste-of-a-bat Barmes due up and, well, ummm…

    Go Barmes!

  88. Drew71 says:

    (He’ll probably get picked off)

  89. Thanks you Brewers for YOUR Error to tie the game! JHay with a much better bunt this time. Must have (hopefully0 practiced over the break. 4-4 game with no out and Jhay at first for the top of the order.

  90. Bizrow says:

So, we are now EYEBALLING EM, snicker, guffaw, snort, snort

  91. Drew71 says:

    Barmes SCORED?!

    My favorite Pirate.

  92. Bizrow says:

    And thank you Cryin Ryan

  93. Kevin says:

    Drew –

You’re a riddle wrapped up in an enigma

  94. Drew71 says:

I don’t use enigmas. I eat plenty of fiber.

  95. JMB says:

There’s a full of stuff joke there for the making, but I’ll refrain.

  96. JMB says:

The OVER wins it, and we take the lead!!

    (Not in that order)

  97. Eric Bowser says:

walk to McCutchen, they wanted nothing to do with him and ball goes off Maldonado’s glove and Harrison scores….. don’t see that everyday.

  98. Thank you Brewers, now put the nail in the coffin, Jones!

  99. Poz says:

I’m a geezer, and I can’t remember seeing a waste pitch like that go off the catcher’s glove. Even if you are crossed up, it was a lollipop. Did I hear Brewers’ fans booing?

  100. Eric Bowser says:

terrible baserunning by Walker, can’t allow that.

  101. Sorry, internet is being goofy on my end, so i didn’t see Jones being replaced by The Hague. Walker needs to get his head out his you know what and not get picked off there.

  102. Kevin says:

    Drew –

    My point exactly

  103. Luck and help from the umps is the scene from Milwaukee. Hague had a shot up the middle but speared by the pitcher. Would have easily scored Cutch.

  104. Kevin says:

Look, the beauty of this season is that our Bucs can NEVER be counted out of a ball game…Not over yet, I know, but we will battle til the end

  105. Poz says:

Let’s just hope leaving runners in scoring position doesn’t come back to haunt.

  106. The Gunner says:

    @ Eric Bowser – #86

It is amazing Correia scrapped his way thru 6 innings. Pedro misplaying that ground ball resulted in 2 unearned runs which really helps Correia’s numbers look good tonight. However, as of late, Correia has been pretty lucky and getting the breaks.

But he is usually pretty shaky performance wise and so is Resop. NH needs to bring in a good arm or two if the Bucs are going to be serious contenders this year.

  107. Reading says:

    Just about broke something.

  108. Poz says:

Wow. I’m watching on the little TV at the moment. Not the best picture, but that fly ball had me worried.

  109. twentytwo22 says:

6 outs to go for Grilli & Hanrahan.

  110. Poz says:

  111. Eric Bowser says:

McGehee got all of that one.

    6-4 Pirates

  112. Zoltan from Casey McGehee with a dinger to Left!!

  113. Boise Bucco says:

Haha Greg Brown says that McGehee has gone “zoltanning”

I swear the only reason he gets away with this is because of his unbridled enthusiasm…

  114. Wow, only 10 behind the Brewers in the HR department with Casey’s dinger. Who saw this explosion coming when watching the offense in the first two months?

  115. Kevin says:

Greg Brown has found a home in Pittsburgh – Prince, Cope, Lange…Brown??

  116. bob hasis says:

Have you ever seen a more pathetic swing and miss for a K than Barmes? He tries to make it look graceful by waving his arms and steeping over the plate, but it still is an UGLY swing and K

  117. Eric Bowser says:

    Hate leadoff walks

  118. Kevin says:

    Oops, forgot Frattare…

  119. Eric Bowser says:

terrible defense by Sutton… uncalled for

  120. The Gunner says:

    @ Kevin – #117

Your comments alluding to Greg Brown being in the same class with Lange, Cope, and the great Bob Prince (aka The Gunner) make me wonder why you left Lanny Frattare out?

Brown does an adequate job but he is not in the same league as any of the gentlemen mentioned above.

Now the bullpen needs to slam the door on these Brewers. My God, did Sutton go to the Jose Tabata school of outfield defense?

  121. Again, why is Sutton still being used in the outfield? He has NO speed, and not the greatest of defenders there. This better not bite us like the other runs we left on the bases tonight.

  122. Reading says:

Time to focus. Need a K.

  123. Reading says:

Hopefully this Maldanado guy is not a former Pirate.

  124. Eric Bowser says:

Can’t be a playoff team with Sutton in the outfield.

Get Marte up here and find out what you have with the kid. It can’t be any worse than what they’ve got defensively from Tabata and Sutton.

  125. Kevin says:

    Gunner –

I realized as I posted those other names that Greg Brown has a LONG way to go to be mentioned with the others….However, his enthusiasm and style have him working toward the ultimate goal.

Lange stands apart from ALL others (IMO), Frattare is the guy I grew up with, and Cope…wow, there will never be another.

  126. Reading says:

  127. Eric Bowser says:

    McCutchen makes the catch!

    Now that’s defense!

  128. bman says:

Now that’s how you play outfield – CUTCH!!!

  129. The Gunner says:

Cutch is the real deal, folks!!

  130. JRay3 says:

Cutch with a huge grab and Grilli gets out of it….three more outs Bucs!

  131. Drew71 says:

    Jason Grilli. The Man.

    Give the Man some fiber.

  132. Nice to hear their fans boo them and see their frustration. Great catch by Cutch. Sorry if any of my posts are behind. Some network slowness on this end.

  133. bob hasis says:

Maldonado throws his down in disgust, saying in effect the MVP is not allowed to catch his soft line drive in the gap

  134. Reading says:

Seem to recall Brown wanting to be Cubs announcer several years back.

  135. Where was Sutton on that smash by Cutch? They showed the replay, and he wasn’t even in the scene for several second before the ball got to Weeks.

  136. Reading says:

Announcer wise, I like Hillgrove on Steelers games. For Pirates, prefer Brown to Neverett.

  137. Drew71 says:

    That didn’t hurt at all.

Good thing Rod is, what, 300 pounds.

  138. McGehee went 0-5 with 4 Ks last night, Hopefully he can go 4-5 tonight!

  139. Drew71 says:

Very few are announcer wise, Reading.

  140. Reading says:

    2.65 bills maybe.

  141. Reading says:

Announcer wise is similar to game used.

  142. Jandy says:

    Hammer time~!

  143. The Gunner says:

    @ Kevin – 127

As I am sure you know, I grew up with the great Bob Prince giving the Pirate play by play – I assume you know The Gunner is enshrined in Cooperstown (the broadcasters wing). A lot of people used to complain about Prince’s style but the guy made the broadcasts entertaining and he lived and died for the Pirates. Lanny, although mentored by Bob, had a totally different style and he evolved into an excellent Pirate broadcaster. However, he never had The Gunner’s charisma. I am just glad The Gunner wasn’t broadcasting for the Bucs the last 19 years; the frustration of all the losing may have prompted him to jump out of the booth.

Let’s go Hammer – get this goofball Morgan out.

  144. Eric Bowser says:

Hanrahan’s control is a bit concerning but two outs and Braun on deck.

  145. The Gunner says:

We had ‘em all the way!!!!!!!!!

  146. JMB says:

    0-4 4 k’s!

    great matchup!

  147. Jandy says:

    The Hammer gets it done!

  148. Eric Bowser says:

High strike called, game over….the Pirates win!

  149. Sit Down baby!! Raise the Jolly Roger!! Tied with the Reds still and back to 11 games above .500. Let’s take the series tomorrow with AJ on the bump.

  150. JRay3 says:

Behind Kevin Correia’s six effective innings and the offense plating four runs in the last four innings the Bucs take game two of the series over the Milwaukee Brewers 6-4 and there was noooooooooooo doubt about it. With the win the Pirates remain tied atop the NL Central with the Reds and move back to 11 games above .500.

The Pirates will go for the series win tomorrow afternoon with AJ Burnett taking the hill for the Bucs.

  151. Arriba Wilver says:

We had ‘em all the way.

  152. Kevin says:

    Gunner –

I WISH I could have grown up with the GREAT Bob Prince. My only point of reference is my neighbor listening to his transistor radio with Lanny Frattare on air. I have nothing but respect for Prince as the only broadcaster I know to compare is Cope.

My point was simply that Greg Brown is finding a place here in Pittsburgh with his enthusiasm and style…

  153. The Gunner says:

    @ Reading – 136

You are correct about Brown going after the Cubs job while Lanny Frattare was still the #1 guy with the Bucs.

Brown is adequate but he doesn’t have Prince’s charisma or Frattare’s staying power (33 years).

  154. The Gunner says:

    @ Kevin – 154

FYI – if you Google “voices of the game Pat Hughes” you’ll find CDs of all the great broadcasters and Bob Prince is one of the CDs. You should buy it and listen to the Gunner in action calling games Clemente, Stargell played in. It’s great!

  155. Reading says:

The Cubs radio announcer now- Pat somebody- who put together announcer CDs and has one for Prince. I ordered it a few years ago and it was interesting to hear Prince announcing Hadfix’s almost perfecto and Clemente’s last hit.

  156. Reading says:

Sorry Gunner. Didn’t mean to duplicate.

  157. Reading says:

Also, Prince did the first four and one half innings of the TV for game seven in 1960. Also, you can get a CD of game 7 in 1971, where he did the radio I believe.

  158. Pig Legs Robinson says:

I kinda like how the Brewers basically gave away the game tonight with bad defense. Now they have to feel terrible all night and going into tomorrows game.

There’s no reason the Pirates can’t take this series now. Were still getting the longball when needed, and A.J. is a professional who’ll keep the Brewers in check.

  159. LuckyNKentucky says:

I’m with you. Loved Bob Prince and Jim Woods. Never heard Rosey Rosewell, but heard about him. But Prince and his Princisms is not unlike Lange and all his sayings. He loved Clemente, too.

  160. JD says:

What a nice win. I happen to be a big Lanny fan. I was 7 when they won the series in ’79 and grew up listening to him. I’m out of town now but have the MLB package on Sirius and the Extra innings deal on Directv. Let’s go Bucs!

  161. Slick says:

and of course ‘Field of Dreams’ is on HBO (507 on DirecTV)… God I’ve missed baseball.

  162. Pig Legs Robinson says:

When it comes to good baseball announcing, one of the main factors is that the announcer be a true fan of the team he is announcing for. It makes a world of difference in how they come off sounding.
This is what the Pirates have had in guys like Rosey Rowswell, Bob Prince, Nellie King, Lanny Frattare, Jim Rooker, Nellie Briles, Steve Blass, Bob Walk, Greg Brown.
I even enjoyed Milo Hamilton during his years here, and I don’t know how but he really came off sounding like a true fan of the Pirates.

  163. Boise Bucco says:

Rob Biertempfel is reporting that the Angels had a scout at the game tonight, and they’re talking about swapping Correia for a high-end prospect.’s Angel’s top-10 prospects list:

    Let the speculating begin!

  164. Bluto says:

Greg Brown is only tolerable now because the Pirates are winning. Period.

  165. Black n Gold (not yellow) says:

What is everyone’s fascination with a power bat? 2 more HR tonight. 5th in the NL in HR. Up to 10th in Runs after being dead last at the end of May. 8th in SLG and climbing.

15th in OBP from the leadoff spot.
15th in Runs from the leadoff spot.
14th in Batting Average from the leadoff spot.
    14th in OPS from…

You get the picture. It’s the position in which they need the most production.

They need a true leadoff hitter.

Sure, Alex Presley slugs .409 from the leadoff spot but a .281 OBP is unacceptable.

Tabata was getting his groove back at the plate (.356 OBP in June) when they sent him down for being a head case. I wish I could say I see that situation getting better. He seems like an overly sensitive kid.

  166. Black n Gold (not yellow) says:

I could see a Correia for Kole Calhoun deal. Not a “top 10″ prospect… 25 year old who looks a Giles-type in the OF blocked by Trumbo, et. al.

Possibly a perfect fit for PNC…

  167. Pig Legs Robinson says:

By the way, I would be remiss if I did not mention once again that KDKA FIRED BOB PRINCE AND NELLIE KING.
It was the ultimate stupid move and one I will never let the stupid people who made that stupid decision hear the end of.

  168. twentytwo22 says:

If they win today, that’s 2 of 3 in a place they always lose despite playing mostly mediocre baseball. Tune up their game for Colorado and they could be flying home after a 4 or 5 win roadtrip.

I know they play day to day and all that but I hope they looked over their schedule because they would come away with a real feeling of optimism with an opportunity to bury their competition, chase down and pass Washington, and see if the Reds can keep up.

Look for the Pirates to start winning on the road. Conservative – 50 home wins and 41-40 on the road is 91-71. It should be more like 52 and 43 for 95 wins, maybe more.

They have the look of the Brewers from last year, unbeatable at home and sub .500 on the road. The second half, they started winning on the road and they ran away with the division. They won 96.

  169. Playoffs by 2012 says:

The OVER takes the win last night. Thanks to all who played. See you in a few hours.

  170. DemonDachshund says:

With all due respect, getting a “high end prospect” for a rental pitcher with a 4.25 ERA in the NL seems a bit unlikely.

A “high level” (meaning AAA) seems possible, as #169 suggests. The Bucs could certainly use another bat on the bench.
