By Dejan Kovacevic | Trib Total Media

Looking ahead to first pitch …

Game: Pirates (49-40) vs. Colorado Rockies (35-54)

Time: 8:40 p.m.

Site: Coors Field, Denver

TV, radio: Root Sports, 93.7 The Fan

Here is the live box score.

And here is the Pirates’ lineup vs. Colorado LHP Christian Friedrich

  1. Alex Presley, LF
  2. Drew Sutton, RF
  3. Andrew McCutchen, CF
  4. Casey McGehee, 1B
  5. Neil Walker, 2B
  6. Pedro Alvarez, 3B
  7. Michael McKenry, C
  8. Clint Barmes, SS
  9. Erik Bedard, LHP

  1. Dan Finnegan says:

Let’s hope they start a winning streak tonight.

  2. twentytwo22 says:

    If only that was…

  3. Lawnbeaver says:

I think the idea of keeping Marte at Triple-A to protect his trade value is ludicrous. All teams will already have scouting reports on him, and even if he struggles for 2 weeks in his first MLB experience, it is not going to greatly affect his status as a prospect.

The focus should be on winning games, every game counts, not just the ones in September. He would be an asset to the team now.

DK: Yes, yes, yes, yes and yes.

  4. Chico says:

Do you think this is close to Bedard’s last chance?

  5. manny _sanguine says:

I hope Starling masters the Art of the Sacrifice Bunt soon so he’ll be allowed to don a Bucco uniform. It would be nice to watch someone who doesn’t look like Mikhail Baryshnikov on crystal meth tracking down flies in the corner outfield spots.

  6. JRay3 says:

@ Chico – if it does not go well I can only hope, but seeing the slowness of some decisions around here am not holding my breath.

Well off to the ball park and taking a co-worker who is a Rockies fan. Hope it goes better for us tonight and that Bedard does not take two minutes between each pitch.

Still would like to see three “real” Outfielders in the lineup but against the LHP I guess this what will do.

Time to get back in the win column, Let’s Go Bucs!

  7. Milo Hamilton says:

Still 2 games ahead for the last wild card.

  8. Bizrow says:

Has anyone in the FO actually said that is why Marte isn’t up yet?

What, is he like “good china” that you put somewhere that people can see it but you never use it??

Ridiculous, every stinking game counts NOW

    Just sayin

  9. Naje says:

    @Lawnbeaver and DK –

“The focus should be on winning games, every game counts, not just the ones in September. He would be an asset to the team now.”

Should we just call you guys Neal and Clint?

  10. Thundercrack says:

So there is a risk. If you bring up Marte now and he stinks for 2 weeks, not only has he not helped the Pirates but he has potentially DECREASED his trade value.

All teams have scouting reports of him against MINOR league pitching.

I would like to see him up here and remain a Pirate. But I also don’t think this is a very easy decision. Or at least as not as easy as some others think.

  11. Reading says:

The only logical option appears to be a callup after tomorrow’s matinee game, as that would give him two days to drive to Pittsburgh for Friday’s game.

  12. Naje says:

    BIz, Lawn and DK….

If every game counts NOW, what did the first 89 games count as?

  13. MadTurk says:

    July 17th, 2012 – 6:02 pm
    BIz, Lawn and DK….

If every game counts NOW, what did the first 89 games count as?

It is a what have you done for me lately world.

  14. Arriba Wilver says:

Biz in answer to your first question, I think the answer is ” no,” that’s just speculation.

  15. Denny says:

    @ Lawnbeaver

I heard a similar statment in another forum today and I can’t agree more.

  16. MadTurk says:

not agreeing or not agreeing, just having a bit of fun.

  17. Naje says:

Easiest way to stir the pot: bring him (insert any AAA prospect name here) up NOW! And DK is well aware of that… yawn.

Seem to remember similar demands in 2010 for Alvarez.

  18. Naje says:

gotcha Turk… no worries. I understand the want and the desire… just not gonna scream for him… sorta trust the people who are around him the most… the ones with decades and decades of experience at their jobs.

  19. Bizrow says:

We have a weakness both on the bench and with the guys playing the corner spots, putting infielders in the OF maybe cost us a game last night

The FO started the season with two question marks in the OF, Presley and Nate (I had no problem btw with that), but they were gambles, cross your fingers, close your eyes and roll the dice

But now its obvious that the PBC needs help out there

Right now, today, what is the real harm in bringing him up?

Same with the AAA pitchers, why not now?

Unless the other 29 FOs are extremely stupid, that is

  20. Thundercrack says:

Indians president Mark Shapiro says the trade market is slow because of the new rules regarding draft pick compensation and the abundance of teams in contention, particularly in the American League (mlbtraderumors)
Of course that is just Shapiro covering for his old buddy NH, because he hasn’t made a deal yet.

  21. Reading says:

Maybe they’ll hide his September call-up as a form of double-secret probation designed to test whether he really likes baseball.

  22. Bizrow says:

Thanks AW, I kinda figured that folks were just trying to figure out NH’s logic

  23. Curt says:

Hoping for a win and maybe some changes later this week.
Anyone else have that same feeling again much like last year at this time?
Pirates rumored a bunch of places and nothing happens…..

  24. Arriba Wilver says:

I think how Bedard pitches tonight will be very important. They have said they think they have found and corrected the problem. Doesn’t mean he has to win or have a quality start, but he has to be measurably better than his last several starts. Could be important to what moves they are going to make.

  25. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

You’re right, he needs to keep the team in the game. If he goes 6 or 7 and gives up a couple of runs, he’s done his job.

  26. Naje says:

    @NMR –

Forecastle Fest is a great event here…was there on Saturday for a while…good times. The local boys, My Morning Jacket, rocked it…

As Julys in the Ville go, this was one of the more tolerable Festivals in regards to the heat.

  27. Naje says:

What’s he been lacking? Location? Movement? Seemed like early in the year he was busting guys inside more often than he has been during his slide… not sure if that’s a velocity thing or a trust thing, but he was pounding the inside zones early this year and getting an awful lot of swing and miss Ks.

  28. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

On behalf of Playoffs, I open the window for today’s match up.

Tonight’s OVER / UNDER (always for fun of course)

Total Strikes Thrown by Erik Bedard in Tonight’s Game
    Line is 59.5

A STRIKE is a legal pitch when so called by the umpire, which –
    (a) Is struck at by the batter and is missed;
    (b) Is not struck at, if any part of the ball passes through any part of the strike zone;
    (c) Is fouled by the batter when he has less than two strikes;
    (d) Is bunted foul;
    (e) Touches the batter as he strikes at it;
    (f) Touches the batter in flight in the strike zone; or
    (g) Becomes a foul tip.

  29. Chico says:

    @Ryan for @playoffs….

    100 on the under.

  30. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

This is a tough line. Depends on which Bedard we get tonight.

I’m going with 100 on the OVER for tonight’s line. Bedard gets the job done, goes 7 strong. Buccos win.

  31. Arriba Wilver says:

I’m going to go with 75 on the OVER.

    Tough line as usual.

  32. Kevin says:

This is getting dreadful – channeling Costanza again and saying:

100 on the OVER please. Thank you.

  33. Curt says:

    Let’s give it a shot.
I’ll go 100 on the over.

  34. Bizrow says:

    Ok, shakily

75 nuclear nuggets on the OVAH

We need this one, well, we need em all, relatively speaking

  35. Black n Gold (not yellow) says:

I just spent some time reading some of the comments from last night and this morning. They make me laugh, sometimes. Bunch of fair weather fans can be prickish, no doubt.

I have to comment about something though. Part of the criticism he/she received was because he shows up “a few times a week”. That’s hilarious. It’s funny to watch people criticize someone who doesn’t spend 9 hours on a given day commenting on a newspaper’s online discussion thread like Milo Hamilton (first post today at 8:32 am, most recent post 5:42 pm, with 13 posts in between).

And then going to work was made a joke… Really Jandy? By a person who accounted for 13 posts on this morning’s thread alone?

Again, the “Bunch” person can be a jerk, but at least he/she doesn’t spend their whole day worrying about some discussion thread. Of course, I don’t post much either. It must make my opinions invalid too. Oh well, I tried.

Good day everyone. Enjoy the game. LET’S GO BUCS!

  36. jeffsbar says:

    100 on the OVER

    Thank you Ryan and Playoffs.

  37. Milo Hamilton says:

Ruling please. Balls put into play do not count ?

  38. Bizrow says:

I’m pretty sure a home run is a strike

  39. Milo Hamilton says:

    @Black & Gold

Thanks for counting. I’m short on my quota.

  40. Bizrow says:

Considered a strike anyways, the guy swung

  41. TDB1977 says:

I’m going to take 100 on the under. He won’t last the 4th inning tonight and the Pirates lose tonight again.

  42. Naje says:

“This is getting dreadful – channeling Costanza again and saying: 100 on the OVER please. Thank you.”

Are you channeling Costanza as in doing the opposite? Or are you the “Kevin” from Jerry’s Bizarro World episode?

Either way… pretty funny… good luck!

  43. cosmo says:

    @ Bizrow

You are correct sir, the outfield as currently constructed is basically unacceptable.
There is only one legitimate major league outfielder(Cutch) on the roster.
Jones is better suited for 1st base.
    Pressley is so-so
Harrison and Sutton are utility men at best.
Hernandez has a decent glove but has shown no hitting ability yet.
Then you have your basic head case in AAA (Tabata)

Marte clearly offers more at this point than the invisible man (Mercer) does.

  44. radio wave says:

    At window:
    75 on the under.

  45. cosmo says:

    @ Playoffs/Ryan

Put me down for 100 on the over please

  46. Kevin says:

    Naje –

If you look at the current standings you’ll see that it is me doing the opposite of what I normally do…but I hadn’t considered Bizarro Kevin…nice!

    As Playoffs has said…SERENITY NOW!!

  47. Arriba Wilver says:

BnG—as long as you’re keeping track, Bunch began his “prickish” comments at 11:27 pm last night. I don’t know his work schedule, but . . .

  48. Dcpinpgh says:

    75 over please

  49. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I will do my best in keeping track of everybody’s wager. Playoffs does a phenomenal job at these things….I’m just good at waging.

  50. tmp444 says:

Don’t have a good feeling for tonight….75 on the under, if you please Ryan/Playoffs. Hopefully I’m proven wrong….

  51. LuckyNKentucky says:

If we’re counting posts, I’ve got 13 in my front yard. Is that unlucky? Or, is that a different kind of post? Maybe I should be

BTW, Milo has his PHD, which means “post hole digger” so he can post as much as he wants to. Jandy, too. Her PHD means “piled higher and deeper”.

  52. JohninOshkosh says:

If you are out there. I provided that link you requested on the morning thread.

  53. RobertoForever says:

    Thanks for subbing.

@Playoffs, that’s a sneaky good/tough line you got there. Are you the kind of person who believes Clint and has faith in their fixing ability. Or are you the kind of person who thinks its a lost cause?

I guess since Clint has us somplace we havent been in years, i think i trust him. I’ll go 80 on the OVER.

    Lets get one today, Bucs.

  54. Chico says:

After looking at some numbers, I’d like to change my wager.

Instead of 100 on the under, I’d like to go:

    100 on the over

  55. Kevin says:

Appreciate the substitution…I don’t think I could do it, so THANK YOU.

  56. cosmo says:

Royals DFA’d Jonathon Sanchez today. Is he a pitcher we might be interested in
    looking at ?

  57. Thundercrack says:

Thanks for the link. ( I was joking by the way). Sorry you had to interrupt your real work.

And I don’t even understand his answer to Guest’s question. At least not then. As of today I do….I think

  58. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

No…….not at all. He’s struggled over the last couple of years. Has good stuff, but no control.

I would add him to the AAA roster if one of the current AAA lefties gets the call.

  59. Thundercrack says:

A year or two ago wasn’t there a trade rumor involving the Pirates and Giant for J. Sanchez? I can’t remember who the Pirate was that was rumored to be involved in the deal.

I do remember a few giving NH ‘the business’ for not pulling the trigger on that deal.

  60. Piglegs Robinson says:

I hope they don’t trade Marte. I’d easily give up Taillon before Marte. But not for Upton, who I’ve never been sold on.

  61. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I believe it was Freddy Sanchez.

  62. Bunch of fair weather fans... says:

So much for Marte being “ready”…

    Rob Biertempfel:

Today’s “When will Marte be ready?” question was posed to Pirates manager Hurdle: “He’s improving upon things we’ve asked him to improve upon: walk-to-strikeout ratio, swing and chase, aggressivenes on bases, stealing bases, getting good leads. You did see him struggle in right field in spring training, so we’re finding ways to get him more games on the corners (at Indy).”

This response just struck me because of a couple of points. 1. walk-to-strikeout ratio 2. swing and chase

I believe some “prickish” person brought up those points (SO:BB ratio & discipline) in this morning’s post and was criticized for it. Thanks BnG for the backhanded support, by the way. Back to work, my 15 minutes is up.

I am the jerk, and I approve this message. 7:43 pm

  63. cmat0829 says:

WOW this one is a coin toss…. head says UNDER, heart says OVER…. we go with HEART baby.. just like the Bucs do tonight….

please give me 100 rubles on the OVER please. and thanks.

  64. Thundercrack says:

Guess who struck out after one at bat tonight?
    Starling Marte !!!

    He is clearly not ready.

  65. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

It wasn’t a new concept that Marte was struggling with this. I believe most recognized that this is a part of Marte’s game that he struggles with.

Its the little things that make the difference between big leaguers and minor leaguers, winning and losing.

  66. Kevin S says:

Not doing so well.. 100 on under…

  67. cosmo says:

    @ TC

if he struck out, he clearly fits in.

  68. Piglegs Robinson says:

Jonathan Sanchez pitched a no-hitter on the night that speculation was at it’s highest that the Pirates would obtain him in a trade. After the no-hitter, The Giants wouldn’t trade him.

  69. Arriba Wilver says:

Bunch—you left out the “he’s improving” part. Don’t think your earlier post answers the question. But, hey, that’s not your point, right? What time do you get off?

  70. JohninOshkosh says:

I thought you might be joking but what the hey!

  71. Thundercrack says:

I thought the same thing. But that doesn’t prevent me from nominating you for POST OF THE DAY

  72. Hal Smith says:

    Let’s go Bucs

    50 on the under.

  73. cosmo says:

    @ TC

  74. Arriba Wilver says:

I’m not going to do a JRay in depth analysis, but one of the things that struck me was Bedard.’s strike count on the over/under was pretty much the same when was doing good, and lately, except for his last outing, when it was only 44. For example, in his first start, which may have been his best, he threw 58 strikes. Dastardly choice.

But if we lose tonight, I think we need to convince JRay not to go tomorrow.

  75. jaxbuc says:

I’d like 50 units on the OVER please.

I’d like to ask an honest (no disrespect intended) question. Why do I see a number of posts disparaging Pressley as an inferior outfielder? I know he doesn’t hit like Dave Parker-but doesn’t he field quite well, throw well, and run very well? He also does okay at the plate. Maybe I am missing something. I am willin to be enlightened.

  76. DemonDachshund says:

    @Ryan/Playoffs –

    100 on the UNDER please.

Happy to lose this one, but… Yeah.

  77. The Gunner says:

    @ jaxbuc #75

Presley is the fastest white guy I have ever seen the Pirates have. I like him but wish he was more consistent. Unfortunately, I think he could be running out of opportunities here.

  78. Thundercrack says:

Marte just struck out again. Swinging on 3 pitches.

That sound you hear is either the evil laugh of Kyle Stark….or his head exploding.

  79. twentytwo22 says:

Bauer was 4.6 BB/9 in the minors. He’s getting killed with walks in the majors. Cole is at 2.5 BB/9 and 1.1 BB/9 at Altoona.

  80. cosmo says:

    @ Jaxbuc

Presley’s obp is lower than Alverez and Tabata. That doesn’t speak well of your lead off hitter.

  81. twentytwo22 says:

    Send Marte down to AA!

  82. DemonDachshund says:

Personally, I like Presley and what he brings to the team. I just feel that he is best suited to a 4th or 5th OF role. Asking him to start everyday is asking too much, IMHO.

  83. Bizrow says:

    A win changes everything

    The sky is bluer

    Food tastes better

    You sleep well/better

You wake up with a smile rather than a groan

The crap at work seems beatable

Its like having grandkids that you love, only a win is the last thing on your mind when you get that good sleep.

    We will sleep well tonight

Might be dicey, but if I was a bettor I would say a blow out for our PBC

    Just sayin

  84. @Playoffs, I’m going to go 50 on the UNDER tonight. Thanks.

  85. twentytwo22 says:

Ok Mr. Positive. Win today win tomorrow (that’s two in a row) and they are even since the break.

  86. Mlrgenuine says:

@Playoffs – This one feels like a complete crapshoot, but I think I’ll stay positive since thats what got me to this point.

    100 on the OVER.

    Let’s Go Bucs!

  87. DemonDachshund says:

ESPN Insider has an article that suggests Marte, Heredia, and Hanson for Upton as the #1 NL trade that must happen.

Pretty sure that NH’s head would explode if that offer were suggested to him.

  88. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

So much for Votto injury hurting the Reds, they’re up 4-0 on the Dbacks in the 4th.

  89. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    I’m cool with that trade

  90. bman says:

    @ playoffs

    100 on the UNDER

  91. twentytwo22 says:

Pirates missed the boat on Youkilis. So much for him being a washed up malcontent. We’ll take another Boston malcontent – Jon Lester! And an Arizona malcontent – Justin Upton. We’ll be the isle of malcontent baseball players. I’d rather have insulted talented players than complimented untalented players.

  92. manny _sanguine says:

    100 on the OVER pls

  93. Eric Bowser says:

and just like last night, Pirates are showing zero patience.

  94. jaxbuc says:

Wow that was a FAST half inning.

  95. TDB1977 says:

How many pitches was that…5? 6?

  96. Eric Bowser says:

    6 pitches, 5 strikes.

  97. Bizrow says:

    Its early

If we lose, Opie will not sleep well tonight

I read something that said NH continues the PBC tradition, back to DL, that he overvalues his chips too much

Upton ain’t gonna happen, NH has more years on his contract, and I don’t want to see him doing something stupid

  98. Eric Bowser says:

very nice bare hand grab and throw by Barmes

  99. Jandy says:

@Lucky(not UnLucky)NKentucky ~ thanks for the support, friend. Some yellow-bellied critters in here just don’t get it. But no worries. There’s always WORK to be done ;)

Milo, better get your numbers, up, dude, no slackin’ off!!!!!

    C’mon Bedard, get to work!

  100. Jandy says:

    AW #74 lol!

  101. Bizrow says:

  102. Eric Bowser says:

    Pedro, Pedro, Pedro – E5

  103. Eric Bowser says:

    They gave him a hit?!?

  104. twentytwo22 says:

    Ugly game #5.

  105. Eric Bowser says:

I’m not liking the mound presence of Erik Bedard…

  106. Mike Shigley says:

Our minor league pitching prospects are getting hit hard. Last night it was Rudy Owens, and tonight it was Jeff Locke. And down in AA, Tim Alderson got battered (8 runs in less than 3 innings).

  107. Bizrow says:

I hope I misread the over under and it was 59 pitches…..

  108. Eric Bowser says:

Bedard has to be having oblique or back issues, he’s not bending at all and the follow through sucks.

  109. twentytwo22 says:

Ugly first inning overall and it’s still 0-0. Pirates hitters swinging early to hit weak grounballs and Alvarez can’t field competently.

  110. Eric Bowser says:

@Mike & others – Are people still considering Alderson a prospect at this point?

  111. Boise Bucco says:

Thinking back to DK’s article about how Nutting poured money into the Bucs’ DR facilities, it’s really going to start providing dividends in the next few years and you only need to look at that ESPN Insider trade to see how. Marte and Hanson are direct results of it. And that doesn’t even count Gregory Polanco, who would be having a great year, if it weren’t for Hanson having an even better year on the same team. And then, as the DR facility starts producing more and more good prospects every year (this is pie-in-the-sky thinking), high-level prospect trading won’t be so far-fetched, because there will always be another prospect standing in line to take his place.

  112. twentytwo22 says:

Bedard, pitching like it’s Game 7, works around Cuddyer to face the rookie and he gets the last out.

  113. Bizrow says:

@Mike – Alderson does not impress me much, IMO not a top prospect

Owens and Locke, AAAA pitchers right now

  114. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Just opened the Gamecast.

Did the Rockies have bases loaded?

Not good…….but the good thing, got out of the inning.

  115. Eric Bowser says:

@Ryan – Yes, single, single (should have been E5) and walk

  116. The Gunner says:

El Toro needs to go DEEP………………now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  117. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Thanks Eric

    Sounds fun

  118. Jandy says:

    Fort does it again!

  119. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

The Pirates will blow this guy up in the 3rd or 4th inning……..

  120. Jandy says:

    That’s it Ryan, positive vibes!

  121. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    You know me Jandy…….

They don’t have to score in every inning…….

  122. Jandy says:

    Nice SO

  123. Jandy says:

Yeah I know they don’t…but too many runs left on base kinda gets to ya too.

  124. Jandy says:

    OK who’s counting the strikes???

  125. Boise Bucco says:

Thru 2 innings Bedard has thrown 34 pitches, 22 for strikes.

  126. Arriba Wilver says:

    32 strikes through 2.

  127. Arriba Wilver says:

    My bad—22.

  128. TDB1977 says:

I’m showing 22 strikes on 34 pitches for Bedard so far.

  129. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

sure it does, but everybody leaves guys on base……its no big deal.

We got spoiled before the break.

  130. TDB1977 says:

When did we go back to April?

  131. Jandy says:

TY guys, and again, you’re right Ryan.

  132. manny _sanguine says:

Starling would have had that one, I think.

  133. twentytwo22 says:

The Pirates are collapsing. They look terrible. They look like they don’t want to be on the field.

  134. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Looks sloppy……..awesome

  135. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Boom…..what inning is?

  136. Reading says:

No way Marte makes that catch until he improves his walk to strikeout ratio.

  137. TDB1977 says:

The shot looks like it is in outer space. What a shot by Cutch to tie the game!

  138. twentytwo22 says:

Because of the Pirates pathetic zombie like effort on defense, that HR by McCutchen doesn’t mean much. They are still capable of losing and he is Brian Giles and Jason Bay. The Pirates will continue to go through the motions like playing the game is a scary movie and lose again. No idea, why the All-Star break is over and they switched off. I don’t know what changed. I am not in the clubhouse.

  139. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

  140. Jandy says:

holy cow 22 why so much doom and gloom????

  141. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

You figured out what that was all about??

Made no sense to me, but what do I know.

  142. twentytwo22 says:

McCutchen hits a titanic homerun to lead off the inning and the Pirates are so inspired that they go out 1-2-3 against a crap rookie pitcher and Alvarez swings at a 3-2 curveball nowhere near the strikezone. Somebody roll a grenade into their dugout and see if anyone is alive enough to react. I’m sick of this Mickey Mouse BS.

  143. Boise Bucco says:

@2222, I know what you mean. Let’s hope that The Era Of Crooked Numbers isn’t quite over yet…

  144. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Ha Ha Ha……….

Keep it coming 22, I need the laughs

  145. twentytwo22 says:

The pirates tie the game and then BEDARD WALKS THE LEADOFF HITTER. Christ.

  146. twentytwo22 says:

Yeah. stick a fork in them they are done. Make a trade. Fire the manager. Start a fight. This team is on auto-pilot. Braindead heartless baseball team right now.

  147. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Oh no, the Rockies scored again……..this game’s over.

I’m glad we can all get back to April/May……..I feel much better this way.

  148. Boise Bucco says:

Lol I can see Randy Quaid out in the bleachers as we speak…

“Wild Thing!? More like Mild Thing!! BOOOO”

  149. twentytwo22 says:

I’ve seen this before way too many times. When the losing starts nothing is done to nip it in the bud and it snowballs. 5 games of terrible baseball and the camp counselor is fine with it. He hasn’t been here for 19 years. He’s only seen how it happens once. I’ve seen it 19 times.

  150. JD says:

Nice work by Bedard to strand that runner.

I’d prefer 22 posts in a row by Bunch of Fair Weather fans than 1 more by twentytwo22. What a tool.

  151. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I think we all have, but the difference is, we also know what this team CAN do..

    Calm down

  152. Pig Legs Robinson says:

I hate when the Pirates play in Colorado and Greg Brown is not doing the play by play (on radio, the only way I access games). I can handle Tim Nevrett, but I always get the feeling that he is a bigger fan of the Rockies than he is of the Pirates.

  153. RobertoForever says:

Oh that Friedrich! His batters get him the lead and he walks the leadoff batter! What an idiot.

  154. Drew71 says:

    Keep posting, 22.

It’s the only way we know your head hasn’t exploded and you’re still with us.

Somebody buy 22 a blood pressure cuff for Christmas.

    And some valium.

    But nothing sharp.

  155. Milo Hamilton says:

This should be the last inning for Friedrich.

  156. Arriba Wilver says:

22–you’re going to make me join Bunch and Roberto. But let’s have Penn State lead the charge against the evil NCAA. (oK, I’m exaggerating with that first sentence). Are you at work?

  157. Jandy says:

ouch…c’mon 22, lighten up dude, you’re jinxing us!

  158. JD says:

Wow, a walk by Barmes. I’m sure 22 can find something to gripe about that.

  159. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I think PSU should make their own football league.

  160. Boise Bucco says:

Bahaha he walked Barmes on 5 pitches…

  161. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

That’s terrible, he should’ve hit a grand slam!!

    Quick, pinch hit for Bedard!!!

  162. Arriba Wilver says:

38 strikes through 4. Not looking good on the Over/Under.

  163. Drew71 says:

How did Barmes not swing at a ball in the dirt?

I can’t tell you how many times he’s swung at Ball Seven in some ABs.

  164. Milo Hamilton says:

    He can’t do that.

  165. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    What a waste……..another run.

    They need to stop this…

  166. Jandy says:

22, question for you….hypothetically, just play along with me here, what if the Pirates were to score 3 runs in the next 2 innings, and the rockies none. what would you post then??

  167. Boise Bucco says:

Holy crap what’s that weird lookin’ number in my box score under the 5!?

  168. DemonDachshund says:

Bedard always looks to me like he’s about to cry.

Good bunt by him though, and they got the run in.

  169. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    No more runs!! This sucks!!

    I guess I was an inning off…

  170. Jandy says:

  171. DemonDachshund says:

Can we have the team hold their own Home Run Derby, so they can all screw up their swings like McCutchen’s?

  172. Drew71 says:

The best news is, this will keep 22 alive. At least for another inning.

Who knows CPR? Somebody’s gotta give 22 a lip lock.

  173. TDB1977 says:

Oh no! It’s 5-2 by the Bucs. What is the world coming to tonight?

  174. JMB says:

At least JRay is seeing some offense tonight!

  175. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Nice, keep hammerin’ don’t let up.

  176. Boise Bucco says:

Too bad there’s not a rule where we could veto a pitching change once a game. Like this game for instance; Friedrich’s about to get WRECKED, and Tracy’s gonna pull him here pretty soon. Hurdle could call PARLAY or something, and he would have to stay in the game. But the Bucs would have to give up an out or something.

  177. Drew71 says:

And why do I have the feeling that there are at least 12 more runs to be scored tonight.

    By each team.

  178. DemonDachshund says:

Can tell the Rockies pitcher is struggling. He’s starting to Bedard.

  179. Pig Legs Robinson says:

I know this sounded way better on tv, which I’ll thankfully get to watch the highlights on Poor Tim Neverett, he just sounded depressed the whole inning with his Rockies stinking it up.

  180. Jandy says:

    ahhhhh keep it rollin Bucs!

  181. twentytwo22 says:

    I’m sorry.

Bad defense, bad baserunning, pitchers walking people and falling behind, hitters flailing at pitches out of the strikezone all conspire to make your team look bad regardless of results. Each game has featured some part of those things and they are 1-3. It’s very alarming to me and I hope that it can correct and they can win despite themselves. Short-term maybe they can skate, but 70+ games left they will lose eventually. I cannot believe for the life of me why they are looking so sloppy on defense. It was one of the reasons they played so many games where they won while scoring 2 runs. It’s been 4 straight games of brutal defense. I hope they are good enough to overcome the Rockies in these two games but this has been an ugly roadtrip.

  182. Lawnbeaver says:

I wrote that the games before September count just as much in the standings as the ones played late in the year, including the first 89. In my opinion Marte would be an upgrade over the current crop of corner OFs. I wanted to point out how stupid the idea that calling up Marte could hurt his trade value.

If I were Neal or Clint, Barmes would not be starting and Hague would not have spent much time on big club. Also Matt Capps would have been traded instead of non-tendered, but that was a long time ago and I am almost over it.

  183. Jandy says:

dayum! Quick, someone pull Pedro’s hat down over his ears!

  184. Drew71 says:

Kyle Stark reminds me of Doug Niedermeyer.

    Just thought I’d share.

  185. Jandy says:

Easy 22, don’t give it up that easily dude

  186. JohninOshkosh says:

    Hey JD

Can I be sure it’s you?

Any other posts from the other JD? I haven’t been counting posts.

  187. Jandy says:

Drew, share with us whatever it is you’re smokin ;)

  188. Lawnbeaver says:

I liked Wehner’s reaction to Cutch’s bomb. He laughed like Beavis and Butthead until Cutch touched home.

  189. Milo Hamilton says:

Atlanta lost tonight. A win puts the Pirates in 1st in the “Wild Card Division”.

  190. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    No way

  191. DemonDachshund says:

    @2222 –

Will all due respect, this is baseball. No, the Pirates have not looked good since the ASB. But it’s 4.5 games. There’s plenty of time left to straighten this out. And it looks like they might be starting about 15 minutes ago.

  192. Jandy says:

    45 strikes for Bedard

  193. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

One pitch, play, AB, inning, game at a time………

  194. TDB1977 says:

    What a double play!

  195. Jandy says:

    Nice defense there!

  196. twentytwo22 says:

I disagree with John Wehner there. You’re down 3 runs. You need baseruners. If teams are going to play infield shifts, and bunt vulnerable defenses then taking advantage of them is smart hitting. Bunting isn’t a macho thing to do though but I see it as mocking the other team. I think it’s a dirtball Pete Rose thing to do. :)

  197. Arriba Wilver says:

That was a heck of a DP by Barmes and Neil.

  198. Milo Hamilton says:

Barmes has been playing some great shortstop.

  199. DemonDachshund says:

Barmes is starting to actually play the kind of defense that can justify his horrid bat in the lineup.

  200. Milo Hamilton says:

From the falling like flies category – Ryan Braun has left the game in Milwaukee. Pulled something in his leg.

  201. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Just a few days too late.

  202. TDB1977 says:

Injuries are starting to take their toll on the NL Central. Yikes! I hope the injury bug stays away from the Pirates for another 3 months.

  203. TDB1977 says:

And I know we lost Morton already to injury.

  204. Lawnbeaver says:

I will admit that Barmes has been excellent in the field lately. His offense is still atrocious.

  205. JD says:

Yo OshKosh, this is your pal (the real) JD. The happy hour loving, BW3 frequent guest and RUSH loving fool. I hit a BW up near OshKosh every so often. It’s right off the highway. You know where I’m talking about?

  206. RobertoForever says:

Maybe alot of people’s prayers will be answered and the Bucs injured player will end up being Barmes.

  207. Milo Hamilton says:

    74 pitches / 51 strikes for Bedard.

  208. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Did I read that right, Bedard with 7 pitches that inning?

Tracy should be blowing his top on that approach.

  209. RobertoForever says:

Bedard with 51 strikes, 74 total pitches thru 6 IP.

And Bedard just batted for himself in the top of the 6th, so the Over is looking better.

  210. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Could be tough to get that OVER for tonight

  211. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Bedard’s line for the night so far:

    6.0 7 2 1 2 4

Not too shabby, maybe CH found something after all.

  212. Lawnbeaver says:

Hopefully we can end this inning with another Pedro whiff!!

  213. RobertoForever says:

Agreed. But it was probably Searage or the Bullpen coach who found it, no?

  214. RobertoForever says:

I can root for that outcome – ending this inning with a Pedro whiff!

  215. Lawnbeaver says:

Oops, I was thinking they batted around last inning.

  216. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I don’t care who found it…….Though I thought I saw somewhere that CH took the credit, or he said “we” found it………either way, great coaching.

  217. RobertoForever says:

I miscalculated as well. Need to get a few runs before an inning ending K.

  218. Lawnbeaver says:

Too bad Cutch did not hit a couple of HRs in April. He’d be in serious triple crown contention.

  219. Arriba Wilver says:

Cutch didn’t look too happy with McGehee swinging at that pitch in the dirt to rob him of a steal.

  220. Lawnbeaver says:

This blog is causing me to lose focus.

  221. Drew71 says:

    You have focus?

How do I get me some?

  222. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    3 more strikes

  223. Arriba Wilver says:

    Drew—think of your secretary.

  224. TDB1977 says:

Bedard is up to 57 strikes tonight.

  225. JohninOshkosh says:

    Hey JD

Sure, I know the place. Give me a heads up next time you’re up this way. I’ll try to sneak away and do a Jagerbomb with you,

  226. JMB says:

    Tom ‏@Haudricourt
#Brewers announce that Ryan Braun leaves game with right thigh strain. That explains the limping.

  227. Lawnbeaver says:

HAD focus. I’ll let you know if I regain it.

  228. RobertoForever says:

Woah, what’s with the Gorkys sighting mid inning? Did Sutton misplay that single?

  229. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    OK, who’s keeping track??

    I can’t, I’m actually supposed to be studying…….which I am, I can multitask

  230. TDB1977 says:

    Bedard is now at 59

  231. RobertoForever says:

Darn, a strikeout there gets the OVER. Now I hope after that walk Bedard is not replaced. Need a 1-pitch pop-out

  232. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    sweating it!!

  233. Milo Hamilton says:

    It’s the OVER.

  234. TDB1977 says:

    The over wins!

  235. Arriba Wilver says:

    The Over wins, I think.

  236. TDB1977 says:

Another fake 100 units down the drain :)

  237. Jandy says:

    lol good job Bedard!!!

  238. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

The big picture, Bedard kicked butt tonight…..

The even bigger picture…..I increase my lead

  239. RobertoForever says:

Now THAT is maddening. Two outs, and then 3 straight walks! That is maddening.

C’mon, Jerry, save us! And the game.

  240. RobertoForever says:

    *Jared, not Jerry

  241. JohninOshkosh says:

Pedro didn’t give that foul ball to the Dead fan.

  242. Jandy says:

Oh man i was holding my breath on that one!

  243. JohninOshkosh says:

Way to use the park, Jared. Yess!

  244. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Does someone have the official strike count?

  245. RobertoForever says:

Wow, I’ll bet JRay thought he was at Kennywood riding the Jack Rabbit! What a roller coaster ride that inning. Way to go Jared! Let’s close it out, Grilli and Hammer

  246. RobertoForever says:

It was 60 strikes exactly out of 94 pitches.

  247. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Wow…….nailed it

  248. Jandy says:

    The Fort does it again!!!!!

  249. Jandy says:

  250. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

BTW, the offense put up a 4 spot on the board.

    This is the June/July offense.

  251. Jandy says:

    i can’t stay up, off to bed…night all :)

  252. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

West coast time Jandy is awesome for sports

  253. RobertoForever says:

How about these lines by @Playoffs. He needs to get a job in Vegas. The Wise Guys could use a fella like that, lol.

  254. JD says:

OshKosh – sounds good. I’m heading up to Waupaca in late August. I’ll let you know when.

  255. Milo Hamilton says:

Chris Resop’s gotten a promotion over the break.

  256. bman says:

Hope the new job you got is as a bookie!!

  257. RobertoForever says:

Guess I hadn’t realized that Grilli had pitched significant pitches 2 of the last 3 days. Makes sense.

  258. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Oh NOOWWWW they Giambi out…….

  259. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    No kidding

  260. PGH2WPB says:

That was the most painful 9th inning I have witnessed in quite some time.

  261. JRay3 says:

Well just getting back and I can say definitively we never make it easy. What a bomb Cutch hit, that maybe one of the hardest hit balls I have seen in person. Encouraging to see Erik Bedard shake off a shaky first and pitch into the seventh, nice win for him.

Have to give a quick recap of my evening, first a women in attendance asked if I could get Mike McKenry’s attention for an autograph I yelled out to him and he came over to sign her ball and I got a chance to speak with him which was great, super nice guy. Later Jason Grilli threw me a ball from the OF when I told him I agreed he should have been an All-Star and that I read his quotes from the Syracuse paper he made, he laughed.

So I went over to the OF and tried to get J-Mac to sign the ball and he told me he could not during BP, to which AJ Burnett said that is his line everywhere. So I than said what about you Jeff Karstens and he had me throw the ball to him. J-Mac told Jeff that is a fine, I said J-Mac if you sign I will pay your fine. Karstens than got J-Mac, AJ and Kevin Correia all to sign before tossing it back, really classy guy and much appreciated. Told him he had a good start and to shake off the one half inning and he kind of shrugged like no big deal.

Later AJ Burnett came over and I got him to sign a ball for a 3 year old whose Dad asked me if I could. When AJ signed I got a chance to tell him how much he means to the team and appreciate what he is doing for the team after 19 long years. He looked up and told me it was his pleasure and he enjoys doing it for you fans. Nicest moment I have seen from him in the few games I have attended.

Great night all around lots of Bucs fans out in attendance, and good to get back in the win column, hope we can take the series tomorrow and close the road trip at 3-3.

    Go Bucs!

  262. Cmat0829 says:

Raise the jolly roger. Was among the 42k fans at coors field and at least a few thousand bucco fans were cheering at the end. Cutch shot was C O L O S S A L…. One of the longest blasts I’ve seen at coors.

  263. Playoffs by 2012 says:

First off big thanks to RYAN for subbing in for me. I really appreciate that. THANK YOU!!

Fellow fair weather fans, The Window spent the evening in our nation’s capital taking in the Nats / Mets game. Nothing like watching two horrific bullpens blow leads in the 9th and 10th. I was able to catch the Bucs game on the DVR and came away with 3 things I really enjoyed seeing. McCutchen’s bomb was amazing, Barmes walk was astounding, and the line was spot on tonight. Sometimes the window can pick ‘em. The OVER wins by the closest of margins. Thanks to all who played. See you later today.
