  2. Bizrow says:

From what I’ve read, Atlanta thinks they might have a pretty good shot of resigning Dempster, that could add value to the trade on the Braves side

  3. Bizrow says:

    CRAP! Good lines once again

I’m thinking we stay on the roll

100 nuclear/dilithium nuggets on the OVAH for both lines

    You know, hope but expect

  4. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

100 for the OVER on both lines……

    Let’s Go Bucs!

  5. JMB says:

    100 DK’$ on the OVER for lines 1& 2.

  6. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

The good news with the Dempster trade; Buccos won’t face him on Wednesday

  7. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    @Biz

It could, but doesn’t really matter honestly. They got him for this year, an extension is bonus for both.

Cubs get a good young arm.

Good trade for both sides, just wish he went to the AL if not the Pirates.

  8. JMB says:

More Dempster trade talk — I think the term “all-in” gets thrown around waaaaaaaaaaaay too loosely. A

In poker, “all-in” is wagering everything on one hand. If any baseball team truly went “all-in,” they would gut their entire system for a one shot deal at a championship.

    http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/07/23/in-dempster-for-delgado-the-braves-are-going-all-in-for-this-year/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

  9. CraigWilson'sRevenge says:

Kevin Goldstein and Keith Law are two guys i tend to trust in their evaluations. KG said that Delgado is a future #3, and KL had Delgado at #98. Maybe the price for Dempster wasn’t so bad. and he has the best stats of any pitcher on the market.

  10. JRay3 says:

According to Baseball America Delgado was the Braves # 3 prospect entering the season. That is the equivalent of our Starling Marte to get Dempster.

  11. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

It was costly of the Braves.

However, the Braves can afford the free agents and don’t need to rely on their farm system, though it is usually one of the best in the business.

  12. Bizrow says:

MLB Trade Rumors is now saying Cubs are talking to Dodgers Garza for Zach Lee, Lee is another good prospect and there may be more in that offer

  13. Dave G says:

    Dempster says he isn’t traded.

  14. JMB says:

Since Grossman was 86/100 on Law’s list, I wonder if RG would have gotten Dempster. I don’t know if I would like that deal, but it’s interesting to think about.

I read that the Cubs wanted Zach Lee from the LAD, and he was 41/100 on Law’s List. So it just shows that every team has wildly different valuations.

  15. cosmo says:

    Playoffs,

100 on the over on both lines

  16. cmat0829 says:

Please give me the OVER on both lines… Bucs due for a real offensive outburst….

  17. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Cubs have some good chips………will get great returns.

  18. JRay3 says:

@ Playoffs – Good afternoon, time for a six game winning streak! Want to tackle the lines. So here goes…

Line 1 – I will take 100 on the UNDER

Line 2 – I will take 100 on the OVER

Recipe for a great night – a Bucs win coupled with an Astros win behind Wandy Rodriguez. Let’s Go Bucs!

  19. Bizrow says:

I wonder if Dempster is playing that, well give me a million more and I’ll approve the trade card?

  20. Evan says:

    @Playoffs

100 on the OVER of both, please

  21. Bizrow says:

RE – Cubs have some good chips………will get great returns.

Wait, doesn’t Littlefield still work for them? ;-)

  22. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

It seems as though the Cubbies want MLB ready talent, rightfully so.

Robbie Grossman probably wouldn’t have nabbed Dempster because of that. Probably would’ve taken one of the AAA lefties, Rudy Owens more likely

  23. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Ew…good call Biz……however I think he’s low level.

  24. cmat0829 says:

DK: re your article today and reference to NH’s quote about “not needing to add anything necessarily”…. peruse quotes from almost any “buyer” team GM today and recently and they will have said something fairly similar. Not defending NH and certainly agree that the Pirates NEED to add pieces, but just pointing out that the alternative of NH saying that would be something that would translate to : ” OMG, we absolutely NEED to overpay to acquire what teams are willing to sell us (short-term rentals, horrible contracts, malcontents) because that is what you do when you are in a pennant race”

It is kind-of like politics at this point… I”m not so much interested in what they say but in what they DO. The reason why most trades go down the wire is that the “asking price” needs to moderate and be a reasonable fit for both buyer and seller…right now sellers can set their price as high as they want and hope for a team desparate enough to do it. When time is running out, sellers tend to “take what they can get” and the price gets lower.

  25. JD says:

Playoffs – 100 on the over for both please.

    Go Bucs!

  26. tmp444 says:

    Playoffs:

RHP means yum yum for Pedro, GI Jones, and PRNW.

100 on the OVER for both lines!!!

    Fear the Z!

  27. JHadar says:

Getting to everything late today —

    DK – Yankeenomics! Inspired.

Along that line, is it me or does there seem to more dissatisfaction among the national fan base with the whole business of economic imbalance in baseball. Especially since a few of the small market overspenders are having to rein it in a little, it seems that I’m running across more and more of a call for caps and floors and so for to level the playing field a bit. Also a lot more grumbling about ESPN’s large market bias.

Whether those perceptions are accurate or not (I think they are because internet coverage has led more fans getting into their teams’ player development strategies and front office issues) I would like to see a more reasonable balance.

Wild speculation here, but could the reason we’re not seeing Marte and Clement, or Owens and Locke be that they are on the trading block?

We’re still even in the loss column with the Cincinnatis.

Someone, I don’t remember who, this morning was making the argument that the Central Division is doing well because it’s top 3 teams are doing well — but the division as a whole is 18 games below .500 — having the Cubs and Astros to beat up on makes the rest of the division look good.

When will we get to see if Meek is cured?

Small sample, yes, but Mercer is out-hitting Barmes .238/.304/.476/.781 to .207/.234/.293/.527 That’s right Mercer’s BA is Barmes’ OBP! Somehow I look for Mercer to improve a bit, too. FWIW he’s outhitting Harrison, too.

When was the last time we actually had a five-game winning streak? Or a six for that matter?

It’s amazing how few players that the Bucs have actually used this far into the season isn’t it?

McCutchen is young, will he be the guy who finally hits .400 again?

Not only are we winning. We are exceeding expectations, which adds to the fun. If we had thought that we had the talent at the beginning of the season to run away with the division, we’d be sulking about being a half-game behind. As it is we get both the fun of having backed the underdog for so long and seeing them win, and the fun of backing a real contender.

  28. bman says:

    @Playoffs

Line 1: 100 on the OVER

Line 2: 50 on the UNDER

  29. SlackBoss says:

@playoffs – 100 on the Over for both lines.

  30. Mike C. says:

    @playoffs
    line #1 I’ll take 50 UNDER
    line #2 I’ll take 50 OVER
    thank you

  31. JMB says:

    JonHeymanCBS
#orioles #athetics #indians, #pirates, #dodgers all among many interested in chase headley. amazin a’s are the new 1.

I don’t see why we want Headly unless we flip him to Zona for Upton. Headley has been virtually 3B only for two years (and good at it), so he won’t be a natural LF for us. And El Toro moving to 1B during a pennant race seems crazy.

  32. Bizrow says:

MLBTradeRumors is saying the Diamondbacks “adore” Rangers Mike Olt, like many have said, doesn’t appear to be a good match with the PBC.

    Just sayin

  33. DemonDachshund says:

    @Playoffs -

    100 on each OVER please.

  34. RobertoForever says:

    @Playoffs

1st line – this one is a toss-up. Pirates have been averaging more than 4.5 runs per game at home, and most of the games are more than 4 runs. But the Cubs haven’t allowed too many games with over 4.5 runs. I think I will go with the Buccos offense at home. So I will go 60 on the OVER.

2nd line – Walker has had very few games recently where he has not had 2 walks/hits. You have to go all the way back to July 3-4 to find a period with 2 games in a row of less than 1.5 hit/walks. And since he did not go over the line in yesterday’s games, I would have to believe he will be over today. So I will go 90 on the OVER.

    Thanks!

  35. MarkV says:

    @Playoffs

    Line 1 – 50 on the OVER
    line 2 – 75 on theOVER

    Thanks as always!

  36. Kevin says:

    Playoffs –

100 on the OVER for both lines please. Thanks.

  37. JaxBuc says:

    Line 1 OVER for 50
    Line 2 OVER for 50
    Thank you.

  38. Playoffs, I would like to take 100 on the OVER for BOTH lines. Thanks. Go BucZ!

  39. pattonbb says:

    Playoffs –
    Line 1 – 100 UNDER
    Line 2 – 100 OVER

  40. pants-n-at says:

@ Playoffs: 100 on the over on both.

@JHadar: I was about to make the same point about beating up on Astros/Cubs. Also, getting conflicting reports on the Dempster trade. If true, this is an awesome pickup for Atlanta. Dempster is a 10/5 guy and he is the one who says there is no trade.

  41. pants-n-at says:

As a former teammate, AJ needs to walk across the field and sell the Bucs to Dempster.

  42. Bizrow says:

    @pants

There are reports out there that Dempster is indeed the hangup right now, some are saying he wants to go to the Dodgers

  43. pants-n-at says:

Think positive Bizrow. If not, let me dream a little. ;-)

  44. Boise Bucco says:

I need to get in the win column over here Playoffs…

Put me down for 100 on the OVER for both lines please! Feelin’ good about the Buccos tonight. Thanks!

  45. bobhasis says:

    Playoffs and/or substitute

I would like to place a friendly wager on Line 1 OVER 4.5 for 100,
    and Line 2 Over 1.5 for 100.

    Thank you

  46. manny _sanguine says:

    @playoffs,

100 on the OVER for each line pls
    thanks

  47. jeffsbar says:

    @Playoffs-

    Line 1 – 100 on the OVER
    Line 2 – 100 on the OVER

    Thank you!

  48. Curt says:

    I will go….

Line 1: 100 on the UNDER

Line 2: 100 on the OVER

    Let’s Go Bucs!

  49. cosmo says:

Tigers picked up Omar Infante and Annibal Sanchez from Marlins for minor league pitcher Jacob Turner (9th overall pick in 2009)

  50. bobhasis says:

Cosmo, are you serious? Our announcers were just yesterday talking about Anibal if he was available, and the Marlins let him get away – along with Infante – for Jacob Turner?

There has to be more. Yes? No?

    I am surprised!

  51. Curt says:

Cutch getting some love on PTI on ESPN.

Question who will be the better shot to stay hot? Cutch or Mike Trout

Good debate. Kornheiser says he loves Cutch. A little shout out from ESPN for our Buccos!
    REGARDLESS…. MLB Network is KING

  52. dcpinpgh says:

    line 1
    100 on the over
    line 2
    25 on the over

  53. cosmo says:

    Bob

Just read it on MLB Trade rumors.

  54. cosmo says:

    Bob

now reporting 2 other prospects going to Marlins and they are swapping competitive balance picks.

  55. twentytwo22 says:

Tigers are on a roll and filled their biggest hole (2B) along with a decent SP. Strike while the iron is hot. That is what we need to do and not wait til we cool off.

  56. JRay3 says:

Come on NH things are starting to happen, the Braves trying to make their move, you know the Dodgers will not be far behind and I am sure the Reds and Cardinals will make some noise before it is all over.

Corner OF and a top line SP who can beat out Bedard or Correia if possible is on the agenda, let’s make this happen.

  57. DemonDachshund says:

Wow, that Turner trade is not good news. Infante is nothing special and Sanchez is a rental.

Turner was their top pitching prospect who struggled in his first start, but picked up his first win in the majors on Sunday.

  58. Boise Bucco says:

Has anyone posted yet that the Yankees traded for Ichiro? If not, then…

The Yankees have traded for Ichiro, gave up 2 RHP’s in return.

  59. cosmo says:

just saw now that the Yankees have aquired Ichiro and cash srom Seattle for 2 pitchers. DJ Mitchell and Danny Farquhar.

  60. Bucco_Jax says:

    @Playoffs

    Line #1 = OVER 100

    Line #2 = OVER 100

  61. JohninOshkosh says:

Ichiro was a 10 and 5 guy so he had to approve deal to NYY. Will wear Bernie Williams number, #51. Likely will bat in lower part of order.

  62. bobhasis says:

Did Mercer do anything yesterday that warranted him NOT being the starting lineup today?

He did everything perfectly. We know what Barmes is about; let’s find out about Mercer

  63. JohninOshkosh says:

Curse my father for making me a Pirates fan. If he truly loved me, he would have raised me a Yankee fan. They have a problem in the lineup-they go out and address it. And all the rules of the game allow them to make mistakes in addressing such problems.

  64. bobhasis says:

I guess Swisher and the leftfielder whose name escapes are banged up more than was foreseen

  65. Boise Bucco says:

Jeez, one of the pitchers traded for Ichiro was a waiver claim by the Yankees less than a month ago too…I mean, Ichiro’s seen better days, but still.

  66. radio wave says:

    At playoffs:
100 on the under line 1

100 on the over line 2.
    Thanks

  67. Karen22 says:

    100 on the OVER—both lines.

WAKE UP, Mr. Huntington! Stuff’s happening!

  68. DemonDachshund says:

I wouldn’t pay Taillon for Infante and Sanchez, and that’s pretty much what the Tigers did. They’re in a different place though, so I understand why they did what they did.

And I would be extremely surprised if Ichiro would join the Bucs. So he was also not an option, even if the money worked out.

Nothing for me to complain about quite yet. Honestly, if this is the price of doing business, I can’t blame NH for sitting it out.

  69. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Big THANK YOU to JohninOshkosh. The Window greatly appreciates your help today. To everyone who has placed a (fake) wager so far……YOU GOT IT & GOOD LUCK!!!

Also, the English Beat concert last evening was fantastic. Very small venue. Even got to hang out with Dave Wakeling after the show for a little while. Very cool guy.

  72. pants-n-at says:

Ichiro may bat 9th ahead of Jeter. look for ichiro’s numbers to go up. And it sounds like the Marlins are just getting started. Hanley Ramirez may be next to go. Busy Monday!

I thought Sanchez pitched well against us yesterday. He is now a Tiger.

  74. Milo66 says:

    100 Over #1
    100 Over #2

    Go Bucs!

Passan thinks we should stand pat. (sorry if already posted)

    http://sports.yahoo.com/news/10-degrees–buy–sell-or-hold-dilemma-paralyzes-trade-market.html

I heard a KLaw podcast where he expects us to fade.

I’m guessing we will end up w. either Maholm, Wandy, or Joe Blanton. And we will get either Pierre or Victorino, depending on price.

At this point, I’d be happy to see Marte in LF, Jones in RF, and Clement platooning at 1B.

  76. JohninOshkosh says:

    @Playoffs:

My special beat bets for tonight:

    Line 1: 100/U
    Line 2: 50/O

Was Ranking Roger at the gig last night? That band has such an odd American/English split-not sure who jams with who anymore. Did see some photos of Dave Wakeling recently-looks like he aged well. Cool you got to meet him-did you ask him his thoughts on Neal Huntington?

  77. pants-n-at says:

watching mlb network. Ichiro isn’t even at the stadium yet and all his stuff still in his locker. Teamates were watching MLB network and saw the news as we did.

  78. Arriba Wilver says:

    Playoffs-

Line #1. 50 on the Under

Line #2. 50 on the Over

  79. Eric Bowser says:

Teams are making their moves now…

    - Ichiro asked for a trade and Mariners dumped him to Yankees for 2 “prospects”.
    - Tigers get Infante and Sanchez for Jacob Turner and 2 other prospects
    - Braves are rumored to have deal for Dempster
    - Padres & Quentin agreed to deal yesterday

..Pirates might want to join the fray and actually, you know, acquire a bat.

  80. twentytwo22 says:

All things considered I’ll any scoreless inning Bedard puts up. Three 3 ball counts.

  81. JMB says:

    @DK

I was hoping to be balanced since both Passan & KLaw were not optimistic about our chances this season, and Neyer thinks the “baseball gods” owe us.

It is definitely ramblin’ and full of fallacies, but I liked the part where we might win in the end. I’m a sucker for a happy ending.

  82. twentytwo22 says:

I’m not reading that article. The Pirates record vs .500 teams is fine. They are leading the season series with 5 of the 8. The majority of the Pirates remaining schedule is against sub .500 teams. The Cardinals stink against good teams. The Pirates have nothing to fear. Your not supposed to believe in them because they are the Pirates. *yawn*

  83. twentytwo22 says:

    You’re*

    damn

  84. twentytwo22 says:

Cardinals lead the NL in Run Differential… I think. They are 13-22 .371 versus .500 teams… I know.

  85. Playoffs by 2012 says:

    @JohninOskosh

Dave Wakeling is the only original member who tours in the USA. Ranking Roger and Everett Morton tour throughout Europe as The Beat. The guy that Dave Wakeling got to replace Ranking Roger is pretty close to authentic. They still put on a great show. If they ever come up around where you live, it’s definitely worth checking out.

  86. JRay3 says:

Nice second inning of work for Bedard but boy watching him pitch is a rollercoaster ride…pitch to pitch not sure what you are going to get just up and down.

  87. Boise Bucco says:

C’mon Dempster, approve the trade already! You know if you gotta pitch against the Bucs on Wednesday they’re gonna light you up!

  88. twentytwo22 says:

In June the Pirates played 9 home games and 18 road games. Nobody remembers that because they went 17-10.

In August they play 17 home games and 11 road games.

  89. Bill Born says:

Yankee injured leftfielder is Bret Gardner.

  90. twentytwo22 says:

The Reds don’t play well against Philadelphia. They haven’t played their 7 games yet. I’m optimistic that sub .500 team will help the Pirates.

  91. likeabugonarug says:

Don’t know if it’s been said in any other threads, but I think Marte is stuck behind a trade. If Bucs pick up an OF, then Marte sits so it makes no sense to call him up right now. You can’t bench Jones now since he adds power to the lineup and has been hitting relatively well lately. If Bucs pick up OF, then Marte waits til September call ups (though as of now Indians will be in their playoffs) unless there is an injury. If no OF traded for, then Marte gets called up.

Personally, I’d rather get a pitcher to solidify the starting rotation. Especially if there is something wrong with J-Mac. Or maybe he’s trying too hard since he got left off the AS team.

  92. Eric Bowser says:

Why does Jones have to sit if Pirates acquire a LF and promote Marte for RF? Jones can play at 1B and sit against lefties.

  93. Eric Bowser says:

How many outfield bats are on the market that fit the Pirates payroll limitations?

Juan Pierre is probably the one guy who won’t cost much in terms of trade value or financial investment but addresses a big need, a leadoff hitter.

  94. Another walk scores. Offense needs to get it going the second time around. 1-0 the bad guys.

  95. Officer Mancuso says:

    Cutch!

  96. Are they looking past the next 10 games, or something? They look flat on offense tonight.

  97. Eric Bowser says:

Seriously, why is McCutchen so bad at stealing bases? He’s getting bad jumps and with his speed on that attempt, it wasn’t even close with the catcher’s throw beating him to the bag.

    Where’s Rickey Henderson???

Someone needs to teach these guys techniques.

  98. Kevin says:

    Caught stealing??? Uh oh

  99. Officer Mancuso says:

    Cutch?

  100. Eric Bowser says:

Maybe go get Juan Pierre to help teach McCutchen

  101. Officer Mancuso says:

I’ve never seen a soft tosser put up the k’s like Bedard.

  102. Eric Bowser says:

Time for Pirates to get some runs for Bedard, he’s tossing a good game.

  103. JRay3 says:

10 K’s thru six innings of work and only one hit allowed…Bedard is dealing, time to get a couple of runs on the board come on Barmes lead us off!

  104. Eric Bowser says:

frustrating to watch this team hit pop up after pop up.

  105. JRay3 says:

Nicely done Erik Bedard! 113 pitches he battled tonight good to see him pitching well. Time for some late inning magic…let’s go Bucs!

  106. Eric Bowser says:

    Bedard – 7 innings, 11 K, 2 BB, 2 H, 1 R, 113 pitches

  107. Come on offense!! Get off your Arsses.

  108. JRay3 says:

Reds up 2-0 can any team take advantage of Votto being out?

  109. JRay3 says:

Make that 3-0….Wandy getting roughed up.

  110. radio wave says:

    Bedard’s best game with bucs?

  111. Unless the offense can do anything, that AB by Walker looks like the UNDER will win for that line tonight. Line one is also looking like the UNDER at this point.

  112. Playing into his hands tonight. They have no clue. Can we get some smelling salt please.

  113. Boise Bucco says:

Man, Samardzija is making the Bucs look silly tonight. I don’t even think he’s past 90 pitches yet.

Yes, I had to look at his name while I was typing it.

  114. twentytwo22 says:

Pirates swinging at balls all night. They made his job easy. No fringe player stepping up yet. Need Barajas, Barmes, PH, or Presley to spark the O.

  115. Eric Bowser says:

What was wrong with that pitch Joe West?

  116. Arriba Wilver says:

Radio —hard to say; he was great opening day, too. Certainly best in a long time.

  117. JRay3 says:

Middle of the lineup need to scratch out one!

  118. JRay3 says:

Have not been able to put one good swing on him all night.

  119. MadTurk says:

    @Eric Bowser

Hard to steal a base when you don’t take a decent lead of first base.

  120. Officer Mancuso says:

Credit where credit is due, Samardzija, his catcher, scouts and pitching coach are putting together an awesome pitching performance against a Bucs team that’s hit very well lately.

  121. Bedard deserved better from this April offense. This is going to suck losing 1-0 to the lowly Cubs after getting one hit and only two baserunners through 8. I don’t have the best feeling now facing Ex-Bucco Maholm tomorrow.

  122. Arriba Wilver says:

OM–excellent observation. You want to take it back? :-)

  123. Ballgame. Get them tomorrow.

  124. Against a team that scored 1 run in the last three games, we are the ones who can’t score.

  125. The Gunner says:

This freakin Soriano kills the Pirates all the time. What a wasted effort by Bedard tonight.

  126. Boise Bucco says:

Aw crap, is it April again? Does this mean I have to start my deployment over from the beginning?

  127. The Gunner says:

    Aaaaaaah crap!!!

  128. twentytwo22 says:

You’re down 1-0 in the ninth, guarantee yourself a chance to win by using your best relievers. Lincoln or Grilli.

  129. JRay3 says:

What is Watson doing? unraveling tonight.

  130. Eric Bowser says:

    9th inning is all Hurdle.

  131. Officer Mancuso says:

Arriba RE #124, nah. I have confidence in this team, which leads me to believe that Theo’s guys did a heck of a job tonight…or hacked NH’s computers…or both.

  132. Boise Bucco says:

Barmes, whoever PH’s for Watson and Presley up to bat in the 9th…

…maybe the Cubbies will let them walk in 5 runs like the Marlins did??? GO BUCS

  133. JRay3 says:

Tough loss tonight…Stros only down one maybe will get some help. Get em tomorrow against Maholm.

  134. Eric Bowser says:

Can’t have Harrison, Sutton, and Presley in the 9th inning of a game.

Starling Marte needs to be here… now.

  135. JD says:

Bedard sharp tonight. Oh well, can’t win them all. Get ‘em tomorrow.

  136. twentytwo22 says:

Bad game. Looked likey learned nothing from facing Nolasco and Sanchez. Scratch out 2 runs tonight and it’s a win. Maybe the switch to Maholm will do the Pirates good. Need 2 wins here. 1 won’t kill them so there’s that.

  137. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Very tough night at The Window. It’s only 1 game. It’s only 1 game……UNDER wins all around tonight. Thanks as always to everyone who played, and big thanks to JohninOshkosh for posting the line for me. See you all tomorrow.

Line will be up in this thread by 8AM. Just need an assist from someone to post it to the Tuesday thread. Thanks again.

  138. RobertoForever says:

On a related note, the Pittsburgh Pirates get a mention in the season premiere of the show, Alphas, on the Syfy network.

One character says to a second character, take it easy on the FBI agent, he’s a Pittsburgh Pirates fan, he’s suffered enough. The second character replies, well, that’s a self-inflicted wound.

Indeed it is. Tonight, indeed it is.

  139. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Ah, one game, so what……tip your hat to BOTH pitchers tonight. Great job by them both.
