  2. JMB says:

    100 on the OVR!

  3. Chico says:

    50 on the over, please.

  4. tdb1977 says:

    100 on the Under

  5. likeabugonarug says:

I’ll take 100 on the over please. Gotta go for the day game heroics here.

    Beat ‘em Bucs!

  6. bman says:

I’ll go with 80 on the UNDER

  7. JD says:

Playoffs – 100 on the over please.

    Go Bucs!

  8. cmat0829 says:

wow, hard to keep the faith after two zzz-inducing games against the Cubs (as opposed to Z-inducing)…. but since it is daytime and Dempster might be distracted, let’s go the OVER for Pedro for 100 units.

    Let’s go Bucs!

  9. JRay3 says:

@ Playoffs – Well good morning from out west. Nervous as the team really needs a win today and wish Dempster would have accepted a trade by now. Here’s hoping the Wandy Rodriguez deal is just the start of NH putting some touches on the club.

As for today, need to see more so I will take 75 on the UNDER.

    Thanks and Let’s Go Bucs!

  10. Boise Bucco says:

100 on the under, but it’ll be a big one…

    Go Bucs!

  11. radio wave says:

    at playoffs:
    Reverse psychology here;
I’m usually wrong, so I’ll go with 75 on the under which in reality will mean a big day for PA and a Bucs win.

  12. Mike C. says:

I’ll take 50 for the Under. thanx
    I’ll say 1 HR + int. walk

It’s a long season folks. no need to get too flustered over 2 losses to the cubs.
    Believe in Zoltan

  13. DemonDachshund says:

    @Playoffs –

The team will show today that they have more intestinal fortitude than last year’s team with a win over Dempster and the Cubbies.

    #DAYDRO with a 2B and a HR.

    100 on the OVER.

  14. Bucco_Jax says:

    100 OVER

  15. Mike C. says:

I’m wondering what it would have took to get Hanley Ramirez. I know his salary isn’t cheap. 15 mil or so for 2-3 years.
AND LA didn’t give up much in prospects to get him
PLUS we could move him back to SS.
I know he’s been down the past 2 years or so, but how could he have not been an upgrade to Barnes?

  16. Curt says:

    100 on the UNDER

    Zoltan in the house!

Let’s not get swept. I cringed as I typed that out. Yikes.

  17. Mlrgenuine says:

Pedro + Day Game = 100 on the OVER

    Let’s Go Bucs!

  18. JMB says:

Sounds like Dempster isn’t going anywhere.

Cubs are supposedly just going to take the comp pick in the off-season.

He has Theo in a box by implying LAD or bust.

  19. JMB says:

    Per Jim Bowden
Rangers focusing on Greinke; Angels on Shields….

  20. tmp444 says:

1 run in 2 games….I don’t see it improving today.

50 on the under. Please prove me wrong.

  21. Evan says:

100 on the OVER for Kal-El Toro

  22. TK says:

    50 on the under, please.

  23. Bizrow says:

Playoffs, here I go again getting sucked in with optimism 100 nuclear nuggets on the OVAH

  24. Stickyweb says:

I’m new to the party but can I have 100 on the over? El Toro loves all that sunshine out there

  25. Boise Bucco says:

There are not NEARLY enough Hunter Pence rumors today…

    Pence for Lincoln

Get it done Good Deal Neal!

  26. LuckyNKentucky says:

I promised myself I wouldn’t mention Pence more than 50 times today, but you go, please. (Just not for Lincoln. He’s the future Hammer).

  27. Stuart says:

Please allow the wagering of 50 sheckles on the under.

  28. Boise Bucco says:

Pence for Presley or Tabata plus either Kingham or ZVR

no money changes sides–they can save some cash for Hamels’ mega deal

  29. Boise Bucco says:

lol THAT’S the window we need tonight…during which inning will a Bucco trade go official, and triple the fake winnings if you can call which player gets traded to the Bucs!

We’d need a pretty good Windoweer(?) for that one.

  30. LuckyNKentucky says:

You could trade all four of those guys for Pence for my part, but he’s not held in such high esteem by some and maybe rightfully so. And, Neal didn’t ask my opinion. Thank heaven for this blog. Opinions are allowed, even if overdone.

  31. crkkid says:

    @ playoffs

Let me have 100 on the over.

  32. RobertoForever says:

With the Zoltan actor in the house to throw out the first pitch, I think the offense returns.

And Day-dro doesn’t just go OVER, he goes 3 for 4!! So Give me 75 fake units on the OVER

    Beat Em Bucs!

  33. SlackBoss says:

@ playoffs – 75 on the under – hoping for a Bucco win today!

  34. JohninOshkosh says:

50 Sherman Hemsleys on the UNDER

NOTE: Game is on WGN America television

  35. Jandy says:

    BB make that WindowMaster ;)

  36. JohninOshkosh says:

Wow, what a gorgeous day in Pittsburgh. Still hot and humid here.

Jones has become a solid major league ballplayer.

  37. JohninOshkosh says:

Rizzo drives one way out. 1-0 CHI

  38. Reading says:

Two thirds of an inning and already losing. Come on Man!

  39. Jandy says:

    Reading, it’s early…the Buccos will score…

  40. The Gunner says:

Hope we have our hitting shoes on today – with KC on the hill, we need a big time offensive explosion.

  41. jeffsbar says:

    100 on the OVER

    Thank you.

  42. The Gunner says:

    Walker must have heard me

  43. Jandy says:

    See!!!!! =)

  44. JaxBuc says:

50 Wandys on the OVER, please

  45. Bizrow says:

Don’t forget you newbies, sign into the Dejan’s Lunatic Ledger, just post where you are currently residing. 219 confirmed infected locations as of last night, haven’t checked last nights thread yet

  46. Stickyweb says:

Oh no, Pedro strikes out swinging. bye-bye 100 fakes ones

  47. radio wave says:

    I’m listening to Cubs radio.
They’re talking about the Bucs acquisition of Rodriguez.
They’re saying Hurdle may be thinking of using a six man rotation for the next month.

  48. Jandy says:

radio, I don’t think that would be a bad idea…might give the arms some longevity down the stretch.

  49. DemonDachshund says:

Somebody buy that fan a beer… That was a homer.

  50. LuckyNKentucky says:

I think we should ask the Gunner. They had 4-man rotations when he and I started watching baseball. Then we can phone Bob Gibson, Bob Veale, Bob Friend and some of those old timers and see what they think about a 6-man rotation. Five days “rest” or “rust”?

  51. radio wave says:

Cubs radio crew said it was a homer too.
But they also said umps hate to reverse their calls.
And it’s joe West, so what do you expect.
    Time to strand that baserunner.

  52. Zack says:

Very lucky for us, that was gone. We have to take advantage though

  53. RobertoForever says:

Does that fan get kicked out?? I hope not.

  54. DemonDachshund says:

Point becomes moot, since the run scores anyways.

  55. DemonDachshund says:

My guess is that they stick to the rotation and push Wandy back to replace KC’s next start (Monday?), then push KC into the pen or move him to the Angels.

  56. RobertoForever says:

So 24/7 tweeted that he was stuck in traffic, and then couldn’t find a place to park. So he gave up covering the game and is having lunch with his daughter (I believe)

So no DK at the game. no 24/7. Is anyone from the trib covering the game?

Hopefully, Milo is at the game and can fill in the gaps.

  57. Jandy says:

    OK Cutch, your turn!

  58. JohninOshkosh says:

Nice to know 24/7 is dedicated to his job.

  59. radio wave says:

Wherever he is, he’s posting on facebook.

  60. twentytwo22 says:

I can’t hear the game through the schtick. It’s either babbling, promos, or scoreboard updates.

  61. Jandy says:

Where are our bats? It’s not siesta time, guys!

  62. JohninOshkosh says:

    radio wave:

Was listening to Cubs radio while driving around. Sounded like Moreland and Hughes liked the Wandy trade, especially with the years of control aspect.

Funny, I’m kinda flipping around the cable to the various games and everyone seems to be talking about how disfunctional the Marlins are right now.

  63. radio wave says:

    John #62
I don’t think the Marlins or their fans ever thought they would be having a fire sale this year. With the new stadium, increased crowds, revenues, etc., this is the last thing they expected.
You hire Ozzied, and this is what you get.
They’re laughing on the south side of Chicago.

  64. radio wave says:

    The Fort with another cannonball.

  65. twentytwo22 says:

Have to find a way to win this game.

  66. Jandy says:

    the Fort rocks!

  67. DemonDachshund says:

I’m thinking that Barajas should be catching Burnett and JMac and that’s it at this point.

We’re through half the season and the Fort is standing strong. Ride the hot season until he gives you a reason not to.

  68. CraigWilson'sRevenge says:

who needs tony sanchez when you have Fort Mckenry knockin dingers!?!?

but seriously, they could be a nice young duo for years if Sanchez can make the jump next year.

  69. radio wave says:

Hate to bring this up, but…
isn’t tomorrow the one year anniversary of the infamous extra innings loss to the Braves?

  70. NMR says:

I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to hear that the owner is bleeding money.

San Fran Chonicle reported that the A’s were offering better prospects, but wanted Miami to cover half of Hanley’s contract. They took two borderline prospects for total salary relief instead.

Couple that with them apparently wanting to trade Josh Johnson, who is signed through next season at around $14m.

Jose Reyes’ contract will only get worse. Heath Bell was ridiculous from the start. And they have what will likely be a $60m+ extension for Stanton a year or two away.

Lotta dough to gamble on a market that has a questionable history of supporting pro sports teams.

  71. The Gunner says:

    @ radio wave – #47
    @ LuckyNKentucky – #50

Thank you for allowing me to get involved in the 6 man rotation discussion.

Based on the way the game is played today and how the pitchers are handled with kid gloves, I would be very supportive of Clint using a 6 man rotation. Now, if we had pitchers of the Bob Friend, Vern Law, Bob Veale, Steve Blass caliber, we wouldn’t need to entertain a 6 man rotation – these guys were animals and outside of Law, none of them were ever on the DL. But that was then and this is now.

My vote is yes for the 6 man rotation and let’s minimize the likelihood of having to shut anyone down like we did in 2011.

  72. JohninOshkosh says:

The United States Women’s National Soccer Team beat France 4-2 in their opening game at the Olympics. They were down 2-0 early to the French.

Bob Brenly mentioned that the Fort probably looks very attractive to other teams as a solid backup with power at catcher.

  73. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    100 on the UNDER, unfortunetly.

  74. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Does NH acquire a bat today??

    Probably not…

Is everyone still wanting Pence? Victorino?

    Any knew names out there?

  75. Jandy says:

    they can’t have the Fort!

  76. radio wave says:

    at john #72
Brenly was our team captain at Ohio u back in the dark ages.

  77. tmp444 says:

JHay, yes the one w/ the .228 BA, as a PH in the 6th in a 2-2 game that is as important of one as the Bucs have played since the Break. Isn’t that enough right there to convince NH to make a blasted move?

  78. radio wave says:

    at Ryan #74
new name I heard today was Borges from the Angels.

  79. SeanAY says:

Following the pitch tracker, it certainly appears that Dempster determined the best way to attack Cutch was to go to the outer half of the plate.

    Let’s bring ‘em in, Garrett.

  80. Zack says:

Pence, Victorino, and Choo names out there as far as I know. Not much on Choo, just an idea I believe.

  81. JohninOshkosh says:

For me, Brenly is one of the best analysts in the biz. Not afraid at all to critique Cub players, but very fair in his analysis. Pretty clear how he was successful at managing a club to a World Championship.

As I write, Jones doubles 3-2 Bucs, first lead of the series. Two out hit!

  82. Zack says:

    @tmp444 #77

It should be enough to call up Marte at least… seriously and yeah the Angels’ Bourjos.

  83. SeanAY says:

    I’m a prophet.

  84. Zack says:

Someone held a match to the ice cube that was the offense, nice

  85. Jandy says:

    Yeah! GI Jones!

  86. tmp444 says:

Is anyone actually watching this game? I have gametracker only …. curious how w/ 2 outs Cutch doesn’t score/at least get sent home on a double?

  87. The Gunner says:

By the way, this McKenry kid has quite a stick. DemonDachshund might be on to something here.

And how about Correia?? He scuffles and at times, it’s not pretty or conducive for the faint of heart. But he has another pretty good line so far today. Gotta keep him in the rotation if J-Mac goes on the DL as mentioned on the Fan this AM.

Incidentally, GI Jones just came thru again!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  88. RobertoForever says:

    Jonesy comes through!

    Bucs leading 3-2

  89. twentytwo22 says:

    9 big outs left.

  90. Zack says:

    @The Gunner #87

J-mac to the DL? Did they have a reason? He hasn’t looked himself, I was thinking he might have a minor injury or something.

  91. JohninOshkosh says:

It wasn’t much of a double. LeHair kinda dogged it in rightfield. Jones did not slow down at all and when straight to second. Ball was not off the wall or anything.

  92. RobertoForever says:

It was a bloop hit down the line, so the RF did not have to go into the corner to get it, but could run forward to cut it off. WGN did not show a good view of Cutch running.

When the cutoff man caught the ball, they falshed to Cutch rounding 3rd but slowing down. With only that info, it didn’t look like he had a chance to score at all. But limited camera work, and no discussion on it.

  93. tmp444 says:

    @John — thanks!

  94. tmp444 says:

    You too, RF!

  95. LuckyNKentucky says:

What’s JMac’s problem? Is it arm fatigue, the Convenience List or something else? That would keep it a 5-man rotation.

  96. twentytwo22 says:

    6 outs to go.

  97. twentytwo22 says:

Now that that inning is over, I am surprised they went to Hughes there over Lincoln.

  98. Jandy says:

    Let’s do it Pedro!

  99. RobertoForever says:

The producers at WGN chose this half-inning to come back from commercial playing the song used as the Jefferson theme song, “Movin on up”. Right AFTER the Cubs gave up the lead.

And their next camera shot was of Dempster throwing a tantrum in the dugout for blowing the game. Throwing things, including a notebook, a cooler with a bunch of ice and bottled water in it, and a gatorade bottle against a plastic door.

  100. The Gunner says:

    @ LuckyNKentucky – #95
    @ Zack – #90

The J-Mac thing was something one of my co-workers told me he heard on the Fan this morning. Maybe they are going to wait until the trade is made to bring in some type of bat(s) and it’ll be a piece of the related roster changes.

Looks like Hughes slammed the door – do I smell a Grilled Cheese cooking??

  101. Milo Hamilton says:

The Marlins are officially in the tank.

  102. RobertoForever says:

The Cubs coaches were really working over the home plate ump that inning after the called 3rd strike on Valbuena. Hope that doesn’t negatively impact the Pirates and calls against them coming up, in a 3-2 game.

  103. RobertoForever says:

Oh no. If you are not at the game. And 24/7 bagged the game cuz of the traffic and no parking. And DK is on his way to London. Who will provide the Trib coverage today??

  104. Jandy says:

    A Milo sighting!

  105. twentytwo22 says:

I hope they don’t go to a 6 man rotation. It dilutes the advantage gained by adding Rodriguez. It spreads out the appearances of their best starters. If there is a guy they want to skip, then they should just skip them. I want Burnett, Karstens, and Rodriguez going every 5 days. They can’t be tired.

  106. JohninOshkosh says:

Manny Corpas shook off Clevenger several times in the strikeout of Fort. Don’t see that much anymore.

  107. Milo Hamilton says:

No way I could be a newspaper writer. My biases would seep into my stories & I can’t spell.

  108. radio wave says:

    at roberto #99
thanks for the visual on Dempster, between the no trade and today, a tough week.

  109. JohninOshkosh says:

Casper and Brenly were talking a few innings ago about how Soriano has become a decent, if not good, leftfielder. Traditional statistics and advanced metrics support and advance their argument. Not sure why he has always been maligned but he puts up good numbers across the board year in and year out. It would not upset me if, given the right players involved, the Pirates made a move for Soriano.

  110. LuckyNKentucky says:

You don’t have to worry about spelling. DK can’t spell either. That’s what editors are for. Now biases, that’s another thing.

  111. JohninOshkosh says:

I’m with you. I’m not very objective. Can’t spell or type very fast. Don’t have real thick skin either so, unlike Dejan, the blog community with people like me would drive me batty. :)

  112. SeanAY says:

Jayson Stark saying, for those who haven’t seen, that the Pirates are floating the possibility of trading an ML starting pitcher. Goes on to say that Correia or Karstens are the most likely possibilities. I’m not sure if that means he’s been told they’re the ones being offered around, or if he simply speculates those to be the best fits.

Personally, I’d rather they not trade not either at this point, but if you’re going to clear anyone out I’d pick Correia. If they moved Karstens – who when he’s healthy is as good a pitcher as they have on staff, IMO – they had better get a HUGE return.

  113. The Gunner says:

    @ twentytwo22 – #105

I am sure it will remain a 5 man rotation.

  114. JohninOshkosh says:

Righty Grilli vs lefty Rizzo. This is the game here, boys.

  115. NMR says:

    I got your joke, Milo.

  116. JohninOshkosh says:

Nasty backdoor breaking ball freezes the kid with a strikeout. Great afternoon drama.

  117. twentytwo22 says:

    3 outs to go.

  118. Jandy says:

NMR, don’t get him started! ;X

  119. JohninOshkosh says:

I think the Mets have joined the Marlins in that tank.

  120. twentytwo22 says:

Clint Hurdle makes no sense, he brings Hernandez and Grilli into the game and hits Hernandez 9th even though Grilli is a 1 inning pitcher. Gotta get Hernandez an at-bat!

  121. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Whoa..didn’t realize it was an early game..

  122. Jandy says:

    OK I’m biting my nails.

  123. Jandy says:

Hey Ryan, glad to see you!

  124. Milo Hamilton says:

What do you all think of Shin Soo Choo ? I think he’d be perfect, if the price is right. Lefty hitter, he walks, can hit leadoff or in the middle of the order. Control him next year. I think I like him better than Pence.

  125. JohninOshkosh says:

Last licks for the Cubs coming up against Hammer.

  126. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    What are you talking about?

  127. RobertoForever says:

Did I just hear them say the attendance was 33K for a midweek day game???

Awesome! And no wonder the traffic and parking was a mess. Get used to it 24/7. This is the scene for your summer day games going forward!

  128. Jandy says:

  129. JohninOshkosh says:

I agree. Just don’t let Choo and Frank Coonelly go out to the bars together.

  130. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Thanks for bringing his name up, I remember hearing about it last night.

Honestly, I would rather have Choo instead of Pence. He can fill the need. Lead off, get on base, some power and hits for a nice average.

  131. JMB says:

GORKYS w. the Jetpack strapped to his back!

  132. JohninOshkosh says:

One up one down. Hernandez speed prevented the double. That is why CH put him in.

  133. Jandy says:

Ha! just remembered, my daugher is at the game. She’s having a blast.

  134. JohninOshkosh says:

Clevenger grounds out. 2 up 2 down

  135. JohninOshkosh says:

Raise it before the long road trip!

  136. RobertoForever says:

I have seen Soriano a number of times in different ballparks. He was a terrible fundamental player. I was at a game in the Nationals old ballpark against the Rockies. He threw to the wrong base/player on THREE occasions in the first 4 innings. It was all good, because it allowed me to explain the cutoff man, and the impact of ignoring him to some folks attending the game with me who had never been to a baseball game.

But throughout the years, he may be an athlete, but he has dogged it WAY more than Tabata has, and messed up most of the fundamentals.

He may be different this year. But I would have to see him over a period before he would lose the well-deserved label.

  137. tmp444 says:

    *huge sigh of relief*

  138. JMB says:

That catch by Gorkys changed the whole inning.

  139. Jandy says:

    Raise it high!!!

  140. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

NIce game, wish I knew it was on earlier………guess I can’t read.

  141. RobertoForever says:

Great win by the Bucs. UNDER wins, but the Pirates end the short-lived “season collapsing” 2-game losing streak.

On to beat up on the Astros again.

Pirates STILL with the best home record in the major leagues.

  142. Reading says:

    Back on Track!

  143. The Gunner says:

    way to go, Bucs!!

  144. pattonbb says:

    ….fear the Bones….

  145. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Gorkys makes a very nice defensive addition late in the ball game. He’s not a starter, obviously, but he increases the chances of holding on to the win, especially at PNC with defensive skills. He’s an asset to the team.

If Marte comes up, or they add another bat, I think Gorkys should stay and AP gets sent down.

  146. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

And that, my friend is the important part…….

  147. Milo Hamilton says:

Far be it from me to engage in hyperbole, but that might have been the most important game of the year.

  148. LuckyNKentucky says:

Yet another comeback win. I’ll fill in for JRay just today. There was nooooooooooooooooooooo doubt about it.

  149. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I’m riding this Choo idea the more I look into it. He would cost much less, I would think, than either Victorino or Pence.

  150. likeabugonarug says:

22, it does make sense (Gorkys batting 9th). You know you’ll need a batter for Grilli, and you know you want Hernandez in the field. If you switch, you don’t have to waste a PH for Grilli. Not that Gorkys is a great hitter or anything, but should the game get tied up in the 9th you’d want that extra bat coming off the bench instead of having wasted it for a player you knew was going to be out of the game anyways.

  151. Jandy says:

Milo, post 147…you’re onto something there. Being swept by the Cubbies could have been bad…

  152. Jandy says:

    Lucky, good job!

  153. twentytwo22 says:

6 home games of impotent offense resulted in a 4-2 record. I’ll take it. Now is the time to recall Starling Marte and trade for a hitter.

I agree, keep Hernandez for his defense. Hurdle never plays the 25th man anyway. It’s not like Gorkys is standing in someone’s way.

  154. JohninOshkosh says:

Milo, take it from me (guilty as charged), hyperbole is this blog’s middle name. But this was a big game.

  155. twentytwo22 says:

McCutchen isn’t driving the ball to right field. Minute Maid Park could be the last thing he needs right now or he could be tested to stay inside the ball and not be overanxious to hit the LF porch.

  156. pattonbb says:

Choo is an interesting name, but if they’re looking at the Tribe, I’ll take Michael Brantley. I like watching that guy play ball.

  157. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I think it was important also….but I think its viewed as important games, only to us. The players don’t see it that way, I’m sure. Just another game.

Do you ever go through your day and when its all said and done think to yourself ” whoa, that was an important day in my life, my career might take off after today.”

  158. twentytwo22 says:

Yeah it was. You can’t be swept at home by the Cubs. Sweep teams and avoid being swept and those games add up over 162. That’s how you get separation in your record. 3-0 +3, 1-2 -1 It’s always huge, especially today considering the location and opponent.

  159. Bizrow says:

    Now I can breathe…..

  160. twentytwo22 says:

On the radio it sounded like Hernandez saved that 9th inning.

  161. NMR says:

    Solution to gameday traffic: walk

  162. Jandy says:

    NMR, LOL!

  163. DemonDachshund says:

Have to think that the plane ride to Texas is a heck of a lot longer if you got swept by the Cubs at home and fell 3.5 back.

Now if the Reds would just freaking lose at some point…

  164. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Reds losing would be awesome……..was hoping they’d drop off a little Votto out, but not happening, solid team.

  165. LuckyNKentucky says:

Craig Hansen signed a minor league contract with the Mets. Thought he had nerve damage to his neck. Wasn’t he part of the Bay trade?

  166. JRay3 says:

Wow busy day at work, but I see the W….and there was nooooooooo doubt about it!

Can’t wait to watch the DVR tonight, hopefully by than we have added our BAT!

  167. cmat0829 says:

Seems to me another reason why teams don’t make deadline trides WAY IN ADVANCE of the deadline is that teams that are selling fluctuate… and you might get better deals close to the deadline…. case in point, the Marlins firesale has really only been a one-week wonder at this point, no chance to trade for any of them in May/June…. and now the Indians, Brewers and perhaps even Mets may join the sell parade. Opens up many more opportunities to match up, get the piece you need, and limit what you need to give up….. what say all you folks who derided the Bucs front office as being cheap or incompetent because they wouldn’t or couldn’t make a move in May?

  168. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

The same thing I said then…..wait. The waiting game is almost over. Not saying something needs to get done now, but within the next few days it will.

  169. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Though I admit that I was already looking at the needed upgrade….nothing really gets done in May.

  170. Bizrow says:

Yes he was. Must be feeling better?

  171. AJS says:

So I was thinking about why Marte isn’t on this team right now. My personal thoughts are that it has nothing to do with mental fortitude or a little slump right now. The Bucs are keeping him in the minors because they are trying to trade him. As a AAA guy tripple A slumps don’t matter if you have shown that you can mash AAA pitching. If they bring him to the big club and he goes 2 for 20 he becomes somewhat untradable and probably has to be sat down for a bit. If Marte is still on the Pirates 40 man come August 1 he will be wearing a Pirates jersey that night.

  172. twentytwo22 says:

    The Brewers imploded again. #29ToGo

  173. Arriba Wilver says:

I was at the game today. I thought there might be a crowd, and with the day game parking is always an issue, so I had this apparently novel idea to leave a little earlier. I am proud to say my idea worked, and I didn’t even have to walk very far. I couldn’t find a place on the North Shore, so I drove back into the city, parked at the First Avenue Station garage and took the T all the way there for free. ( Biz—I did pay to park.). It was like packed sardines on the way over, but on the way back it wasn’t bad at all. My first experience with the North Shore extension, and I was very impressed. The station kind of looked like something out of Epcot Center.

The game was great, somehow it didn’t seem as close as the final score, but Gorkys did kind of save it with that catch. I missed that he’d been put in, so off the bat it looked like it was going to the wall, and Cutch wasn’t going to get to it, and bam, Gorkys stabs it. Then I knew it was Gorkys. Amazing play in person.

One little note about the much maligned Kevin Correia. 2 runs and four hits in 6 innings and he’s still a “bum?”. Seemed like it on the Fan on the drive home. Looked like a pretty good outing, even with the solo home runs.

  174. RobertoForever says:

It was just tweeted that a source said that Marte will join the Pirates in Houston.

  175. NMR says:

Maybe if DK would stop combing his hair with a shovel he would’ve gotten the scoop before Tim Williams attractive sidekick, Kristy Robinson.

DK: Was first to confirm callup. Let’s not let the Penn State stuff carry over into everything, NMR. I can promise you that I won’t.

  176. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    I like that tweet…..

  177. RobertoForever says:

I thought he combed it with a pitchfork ;)

  178. LuckyNKentucky says:

    Wagon wheel.

  179. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Either way, he’s probably in the air on a long journey to London……….

  180. JRay3 says:

@ Roberto – great scoop, maybe they have seen enough of Alex in LF, have come to terms that Tabata most likely will not be of help remainder of this year and have decided it is time to see what we have.

Still holding out hope that the team is looking for a proven corner OF to help in this race. But excited to see what Marte brings to the table!

  181. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I agree with ya…..does AP or Gorkys go down?

I’m guessing Gorkys, but I consider him a “closer” on defense if you will. Much better than AP, but he has a better bat. Which is a sad state of affairs.

  182. JuniataKid says:

The Houston series seems like a good place to let Marte get his feet wet in the bigs. Could build some confidence.

  183. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Simliar to Strasburg starting against the weak Pirates lineup when he came up.

  184. JohninOshkosh says:

All you Brewer haters-you know who you are-make sure you see the clip of Chris Gomez running around the bases after he hit a foul ball that he thought was a homerun. Then he tripped coming out of the dugout to take the field after the Brewers half of the inning ended. Hilarious.

  185. RobertoForever says:

The more I think about the Shin Soo Choo idea, the more I like it. He has some pop, could bat leadoff. Wish he was a switch-hitter or righty though.

I look forward to the next add by the FO.

  186. JMB says:

    nice write-up!

  187. RobertoForever says:

    I am confused.

Didn’t Kristy_Robinson tweet it first? About 20 minutes before DK. And then he tweets he CONFIRMED it thru a Pirates source. Who’s to say that Kristy’s source was not a Pirates source?

Seems to me that Kristy_Robinson scooped the Marte promotion. Good for her.

DK: Honestly, RF, I had about 10 minutes between flights at the Charlotte airport. I got a text, put it up when I got inside the airplane cabin, and I couldn’t care less who got what first or parsing between “Hearing that” or “CONFIRMED” or whatever. My issue with NMR was separate of all that.

  188. NMR says:

Last post was not meant to be taken seriously and certainly wasn’t intended to be derogatory. My appologies if it was.

Looking forward to seeing your take on the Olympics, as I do with all matters of sport.

    DK: Understood and appreciated!

  189. NMR says:

Just to be clear, I’m not even following DK right now on Twitter so I had no clue whether or not he broke the Marte story first. My comment was meant completely tongue-in-cheek.

He doesn’t need to explain himself any further. It’s not a big deal.

  190. Milo Hamilton says:

Wonder what team wants to see Marte against big league pitching ? Indians ? Phillies ? Pirates ?

  191. LuckyNKentucky says:

Taillon and Cole both on the mound tonight. Taillon gave up 2 in the 2nd. Cole’s OK so far.

  192. JohninOshkosh says:

Isn’t he debuting against the Astros? I thought you said “big league” pitching.

  193. twentytwo22 says:

I did go to and watch the Phillies-Brewers highlights and see Carlos Gomez’ act as he rounds the bases after a HR. Big 7 HR guy. I forget the name of the guy who used to have a limp right arm homerun trot. You gotta check out Gomez Monday & Tuesday. It was great to see the Phillies come back and win all 3 games. Where is the other highlight?

The Orioles pitcher tonight hit 2 guys in the first inning. Dock Ellis pitched a game against the Reds where he hit the first 3 guys. Ellis wasn’t thrown out of the game. He was pulled after walking the next guy.

  194. Eric Bowser says:

@22 – Wasn’t it Jeffrey Leonard that did the limp arm thing?

  195. Milo Hamilton says:

Pirates make the Marte promotion official. They have already seen enough of Evan Meek, as have I. He’s been optioned.

  196. Milo Hamilton says:

    One flap down.

  197. Eric Bowser says:

    @22 – It was Leonard

I can remember doing this in Little League

  198. Eric Bowser says:

@Milo – Didn’t Jack Clark do something that year too that ticked off people?

  199. Milo Hamilton says:

Other than kill the Pirates I can’t remember. Surly fellow though.

  200. JohninOshkosh says:

Great call and link on Leonard.

My favorite home run trot is Adam Rosales, of the A’s organization. Runs around the bases at near full speed.

  201. Bizrow says:

@AW – Parking at the casino, only the parking is free ;-)

Marte is up? Meek is down? (My cell phone is charging, haven’t seen any tweets)

They have to add Wandy tomorrow, or so I read, so another move is coming

Wonder why they waited to the road trip to call Starling up?

  202. Bizrow says:

2222, Doc was hallucinating, he had no idea what he did. I remember we were playing pinochle while listening to the Gunner call that game.

Even the Gunner was a bit floored

  203. JRay3 says:

@ Milo – So if Meek is down which takes a reliever away does Correia, Karstens go into long relief role? Interesting.

  204. JRay3 says:

@ Ryan – just saw 24/7 tweet he believes Gorkys will be sent down if no trades materialize. Appears AP becomes 4th OF.

Hope Marte can handle the lead off spot tomorrow night! Exciting time to be a Bucs fan lots of activity and playing as if the FUTURE IS NOW!

    Let’s Go Bucs!

  205. twentytwo22 says:

First good game with the Pirates, holding that flaming stick to the back end of the back end of the rotation.

    Good control.

Way to use the hard stuff.

  208. Officer Mancuso says:

Nice win. I think the Bucs will contend. I can remember World Series teams where guys who were never heard from again excelled. Groat. Face. This team looks to me like it *might* be a contender. I am checking the standings and box scores every day, and am frequently surprised in a good way. I thought that the Bedard and McGeehe pickups were brilliant. I hope I was right.

  209. Arriba Wilver says:

Correia is on a 6 game win streak. But Clint said something along the lines of usually you have to pitch well to win games at the MLB level . . . But not always. If I’m Kevin, I’m not taking a lot of comfort with that.

  210. Boise Bucco says:

So who’s this Sterling Marte guy? Hope he’s better than the last guy they stuck in left.

  211. Redus says:

Huntington was quoted as saying that he was waiting until DK was in London to call up Marte

  212. Mike Shigley says:

    Minor League report.
Cole was ok – 64 of 95 pitches for strikes, but he only lasted 5 innings: 5 Ks, 2 walks, 5 runs (3 earned), and 1 home run. He is on the hook for the loss unless the Curve rally.
Taillon was mediocre – 6 innings (play by play rather than gameday), 4 runs (all earned) on a 2 run homerun, a single after a stolen base, and a wild pitch to score a run. He had 4Ks and a walk and gave up 8 hits.
Clay Holmes had another spectacular outing for the Spikes: 5 innings, 3 hits, 2 walks, 4Ks and no runs (to lower his league leading ERA to 0.80). Oh yes, he is now 4-1.

  213. Drew71 says:

Who’s got Correia praying to heaven
Calling a name we can’t say on air
Who’s bending down to drop trou to Kevin
    Everyone knows it’s Wandy

    (Bom, Bom, Bom, Bom, Bommm)

Who’s Bedard wish they never did trade for
Smilin’ in public, then punching the wall
Who’s forced Bedard to the bullpen he’s made for
    Everyone knows it’s Wandy

    (Bom, Bom, Bom, Bom, Bommm)

    And Wandy has Erik’s spot
If not, he’s got Kevin hot
    Chased Dejan to London Fog
He’ll love the blog (he’ll love the blog)
He’ll love the blog (he’ll love the blog)

Big THANK YOU tonight to BMAN for posting the line onto this thread. As always, The Window appreciates all the help. Couldn’t do this day in and day out without you all. THANK YOU.

Line will be posted in this thread by 8 AM. Just need another re-post from a dedicated soul to the Thursday game thread.

I do remember that game. Dock was quite the character and a very good pitcher. Marte just has to be an upgrade to the imposters CH has been running out to LF.

Now the Bucs have got to sweep the Astros and hope the Reds lose a couple games.

Astros plate 3 in 8th to take lead just close it out and chance to gain game back.

  220. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Francisco Cordero leads off the 9th by giving up a double to Xavier Paul

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…Cordero is by far the WORST closer in the majors.

  221. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Francisco Cordero…..that’s all I can say

  222. Ossifer Mancuso’s Pizzeria,

What do you mean you never heard of Dick Groat and ElRoy Face again?

Groat appeared in 2 more All Star games with the Pirates and 2 more again with the Cardinals, 4 total. He led the whole National League in doubles one year. He batted .319 and toyed with another batting crown with the Cardinals in 1963 while finishing 2nd in MVP race. He helped lead the Cardinals to the 1964 World Series Championship over the dreaded Yanquis.

ElRoy led the National League in 1961 & 1962 in Games Finished, precursor to the Save (if saves were counted then as now, he would have also led the National League in saves). Face went on to win 40 more games in relief for the Pirates after 1960 in his career, an extremely high amount.

Dick Groat and ElRoy Face continued to be valuable Major League players after 1960. Groat got another World Series Championship.

  223. JRay3 says:

@ Playoffs – two nights in a row just brutal…..have the Reds even lost since Votto went on DL? Unreal

  224. What’s the update on the Reds game? Did Xavier Paul get picked off?

  225. @Groat, 5-3 Reds with one out in the bottom of the ninth and a man on 2nd. Reds got 3 in the top of the ninth of of Cordero.

  226. Reds committed 4 errors tonight and are STILL likely to win the game. Houston better roll over for us this weekend like they did for the Reds.

  227. Two out now and Altuve is our hope for at least a tie.

  228. Playoffs by 2012 says:

This Reds team isn’t going to roll over. They are the real deal. But if we can stay within 3-5 games of them into September, I like our chances.

  229. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Man, Houston ain’t helping us at all against the the Reds. Who plays the Reds next? I hope a better team than the Astros!
Meanwhile Headley continues to rake outside of the hitting enemy called Petco Park, with another homerun tonight. Wonder who will crack first on him. Probably the Yankees now with ARod out. As an outfielder He’d fit in the Pirates lineup, but I’d still take Pence, Victorino, or Soriano ahead of him.

Nice showcase of Hughes today. I’ll hate to lose him if he indeed gets traded, he’s a good one. Phillies could do way worse than to pick him up.

  230. Game over, Red 5-3 winners again. Still 2.5 back. I’d be nice if LA can beat the Cards to give us one more game on them, though.

  231. I’m OK if we pick up a game——even two——in the next 7 games. Then we play the Reds head-to-head!

Just got to keep winning series. Reds are due to lose. Hidden vigorish!

  232. JRay3 says:

@ Pig legs- Reds at Colorado for 3 game set starting Fri. Cards one more with Dodgers before going to Chicago for 3 game set against Cubs while battle Houston.

  233. Pig Legs Robinson says:
