(1) BRAND NEW PITTSBURGH PIRATES FITTED NEW ERA 59FIFTY HAT
Second Place at the end of the season will win:
(1) BRAND NEW PITTSBURGH PIRATES EARTH DAY GIVEAWAY HAT
Third Place at the end of the season will win:
Leading off, #64 Starling Marte. Come on. We need to get him, Jordy and Gorkys some BB numbers instead of offensive guard ones. Guess they have to earn those, right? Who cares what their numbers are if they produce.
Let the Wandling Era begin!
Playoffs,
Line one 50 on the OVER
Line two 100 of the OVER, pls
Thanks
Window
Please wager 50 drachmas each on the over for both. A good start for the Marte “ERA”.
Stuart 66
@ playoffs – 75 on the over on both lines please. Here’s hoping that Mr. Marte gets off to a good start!
Seams to be all quiet on the trade rumor front. Anyone hearing anything? We still need a bat and we need a couple (PH) bench players.
@Playoffs
Please sir, 50 Batting Cage Tokens on the UNDER for Line 1.
75 Tokens on the OVER for Line 2.
I am amazed——nee appalled——that some, who have never even seen Starling Marte play in person or on TV, are beginning to say McCutch should move to left to make room for The Birdman in center field.
I just want to enjoy them both patrol the outfield right now!
Let’s leave the Strato-baseball for the Hot Stove League. I guess that’s why we are called FANatics!
Playoffs–50 on the OVER on both lines.
@Playoffs:
Someone posted your lines on the Wakeup Call thread so some made fake wagers over there. I tried to sift through the comments and as of 4:23 EDT these are the fake wagers from that thread:
pants-n ant: L1 100/U L2 100/O
stickyweb: L1 100/O L2 100/O
Absolute59 L1 100/O L2 100/O

Kevin L1 100/O L2 100/O
cmat L1 100/O L2 100/O
Curt L1 100/U L2 100/O
NOTE; IF I AM IN ERROR ON ANY THESE PLEASE POST THE CORRECT FAKE BETS ON THIS THREAD
Playoffs, I was involved in so much blathering earlier today, I am deeply concerned that the most important thing I can impart to anyone here are my choices for the window may have gotten lost or muddled.
So I repeat I would like 100 “hickies” for OVER on Line 2.
And as an afterthought, 25 “doo-dads” on the OVER for Line 1
Thank you
Playoffs by Infinity,
Your betting line got mistakenly placed on the earlier thread by a guy who couldn’t wait to lose his imaginary dracmas. He is presently attending a Gamblers Anonymous meeting.
You will have to go through the morning thread to cull out your list of imaginary winners and losers.
G2M–a man after my own heart . . . Er . . . In other words I agree with you.
Wilver Dornel,
I smiled broadly when your stamps arrived in my mail Monday!
@Playoffs:
Gotta get in on the Marte love even though work will prevent me from enjoying it live:
LINE 1 50 Rookie Nerves on the UNDER
LINE 2 50 This series makes me nervous on the UNDER
On the anniversary of Jerry Meals finest shining moment as a major league umpire
I choose the OVAH, 100 nuclear Drew nuggets on both lines
Thanks to all that are helping this effort
BEAT EM BUCS
@Playoffs -
100 on each OVER please.
The Marte one makes me nervous, but he ought to get 5 appearances or so, so I’ll roll the dice.
Playoffs………I’d like to jump in and say 100 on the over on both items….Just got back from PA….Went to game on Monday…The game sucked big time, but being at the stadium and soaking it all up was great….It was cool getting to listen to Pittsburgh talk radio….Except for the PSU b.s. UGGGHHHH……
@playoffs
Line 1: 50 on the under
Line 2: 100 on the over
Thanks!
Oshkosh b’gosh,
I did not get to see the Spain game, but I noticed that Krzyzewski is playing your boy mostly at the off guard. What a difference comparing when Chris Paul or Derrick Williams have the ball!
I still think he’s a driver, not a point guard.
@ Playoffs
Line 1: 50 on the OVER
Line 2 : 100 on the OVER
Thanks and let’s gain a half game on the Reds tonight!
Let’s Go Bucs!
I’m goin 100 on the over for both 1 & 2
6 man rotation yea….
Don’t need no stinkin bat now….
Is this a fun team or what?
@playoffs
#1 – I’ll take the 50 on the OVER
#2 – I’ll take the 100 on the OVER
thank you
I’d rather prefer Marte at RF and G Jones in LF and have a slight shift with CF & RF to the left all game to compensate for Jone’s range in “spacious” left field.
Just seems like a waste to put Marte’s canon arm i’ve read all about in RF.
Not sure who’s faster, but couldn’t Cutch play LF and Marte in CF for a few games?
Might help the rookie acclimate the bigs faster if he played in the position he’s most comfortable with.

@Playoffs
I will be rooting for Marte. But batting leadoff in the show is different than batting 3rd or 4th in triple-a. So it is natural to expect some jitters. So for line 1, I will go 25 on the UNDER.
On line 2, I can’t believe that we would lose more than 1 to a team that has only won 2 games out of the last 24. If they do, then I will have more to worry about that 100 fake units. So let’s go max bet of 100 units on the OVER for the 2.5 wins.
Beat Em Bucs
Congrats to CH for starting Jonesy against another LHP. Hoping the Legend will reward him with some serious contributions tonight.
@JHadar and CMAT
I like Barmes for his defense as well, not as bad as people point out by stats. Just going by what I see. I would like Jordy get more playing time as well though. Maybe two or three games in a row. I say play both and see what happens.
Jordy has batted pretty well and has speed to boot.
Line #1: 50 on the under
Line #2: 100 on the over.
Let the Fort play!!
At playoffs:
Line 1 100 over
Line 2 77 over
Thanks
For what it is worth, the Astros are 24-24 at home and a stellar 10-41 on the road (according to MLB.com). Given that the Pirates are 4 games under .500 on the road for the season, tonight’s game shapes up as more of a fair fight than the records indicate. I would still take the Pirates and AJ Burnett.
Pants-Fort will never play on days when Jmac or Burnett pitch. Just isn’t going to happen.
@Groat:
i saw all 4 warm up games. A couple of things of concern. International refs are calling traveling when the NBA’ers start their drives with a step (like they are accustomed to doing during Association games) instead of putting the ball on the floor. They will have to adjust to that (like NHL’ers had to adjust to stop substituting and dilly dallying before face-offs during the winter games). Chandler is going to be in perpetual foul trouble. They have a tendency to go into defensive lapses. However, you can tell that the Americans are taking these games seriously, and I do have to say there are no human beings on earth that can play with and handle James and Durant when those two are on fire together on the court. It was fun to watch James and Serge Ibaka duel in the exhibition. It will be very fun if the two meet again in the medal round.
The team is loaded but vulnerable when the big men are out. Westbrook will need to hit the threes when he plays, especially when he plays with the smaller lineup. The NBA’ers are loving that shorter 3 point line-hope they don’t fall too much in love with it.
Month of July stats
W-L with Barajas starting: 6-6
W-L with McKenry starting: 7-1
Bottom line is wins!
@playoffs
#1 – 100 on the OVER
#2 – 100 on the OVER
thank you!
In Hockey news…
Semin signed–1 yr, $7M with the ‘Canes.
@ playoffs
seems to be a pretty even divide on Marte on line 1. here’s hoping he makes a splash
tonight. 100 over.
line 2 go with the majority, 100 on the over.
as always thank you sir.
@ Boise Bucco
# 35 , is that a crazy amount or what. The man has shown signs of being a good goal scorer, but he also has shown signs of bieng somewhat of a slacker.
I guess thats why the pens weren’t really in on him.
Well, looks like I will get to see at least the 1st inning tonight.
@John
Thanks for reposting our wagers, much appreciated.
Bob, don’t take things so personal..we’re only messing with ya
From Brewers.com:
“General manager Doug Melvin took the rare step Thursday of saying that Greinke will be dealt before Tuesday’s 3 p.m. CT non-waiver Trade Deadline”
Why do I see him in a Redbirds uni? Hope Melvin does the Bucs a favor and deals him to the AL.
Things are tightening up, kids.
@cosmo–if he can pull it together for a year, Semin could be looking at a pretty nice contract next off-season. He’s got some pretty good skills, just a terrible reputation. Wish the Pens could’ve got him, and I’m sure Shero looked into it, but I’m glad they didn’t get him for $7M.
Either way, Pens still look good going into next year, I’m not worried.
@Playoffs, I’m going to go with 50 on the OVER for Line #1, and 50 on the OVER for line #2. Thanks.
Groat@#9
Your reference “amazed – nee appalled” as relates to switching Cutch to left could be aimed at me, and you are right that I have never seen Marte play.
Others had stated just today that Marte is much better in center than in the corners. I said if that is true perhaps – and I emphasize perhaps – Cutch would have no problem going to left.
I don’t advocate that, and I wouldn’t approach him on that – he is in the midst of a landmark season, a career-maker year and you don’t tamper with perfection.
I too can’t wait to see them TOGETHER in our outfield
In my opinion, Cutch would need to volunteer, otherwise Marte will have to just play better and measure up. That’s an extra large period!!!
Just signed on and jumped to the lineup.
Didn’t see him at first cause I thought he might be buried in bottom third for his first few starts.
He’s not there???
Waitaminnit, waitaminnit…
What’s that at the top of the lineup?
I think I’m in love.
@John – re – Things are tightening up, kids
And IMO we are still not yet in a pennant race, its early
OK, I know a few that like to ridicule this, but I like doing it

Well, the bandwagon is fuller.
On Dan Lebartd is Highly Questionable today, Dan’s dad, Gonzalo, said he is intrigued and wants to watch tonight’s Pirates game for AJ Burnett. And he is said he wants to see every Pirates game for the rest of the season.
Dan was not convinced, LOL.
sorry,
*more full.
Ryan @#39
I doubt that I am offended or take “some barbs” personal, but rather I thoroughly enjoy point counterpoint alot and I love defending myself. (You’d want to be in a foxhole with me in wartime if push came to shove).
Just bring it, I mean verbally at least. This is great fun, like doing crossword puzzles helps to fend off dementia and senility. It’s a mind exercise basically
Here’s hoping that Barmes remembers how he hit several homeruns into those Crawford boxes last year. Go Bucs!
@ playoffs
Let me get 100 units on the under for #1
and 100 units on the over for #2
Thanks!
Good point SJS
We need four bombs from Barmes this weekend!
My only problem with these roster moves, etc. is the mental state of one, Kevin Correia. The guy has won six straight and everyone talks about him going to the pen or being traded. I know he causes consternation in us all when he pitches and his ERA is still over 4, but he’s 8-6. Probably at peak trade value now, and won’t be back, but how do you maintain a positive mind set in his situation? Nonetheless, the same “experts” named Karstens as trade bait and that seems even more foolish. Of course, BB is a business and all the players know that, but still…….
@Bob
Good, wouldn’t want to offend and I always like hearing other people’s views, whether I agree with them or not.
No foxhole for this guy!!
@Lucky
I would assume CH is keeping him abreast to the whole situation. One thing CH has is expert leadership skills. He’ll handle it appropriately.
I would hope Kartsens will not be traded
“No one is untouchable” though…..
Unless Karstens is in a package for Willingham, I say keep him.
Rod Barajas has a chance for a few homers.
100 on the OVER for both lines please!
Ryan@#54
So it’s you who is so impressed with CH’s leadership skills. Can you give me a small dissertation then why Barmes is still unquestionably his starting SS?
Would you be able to concede that with Mercer around, we MIGHT have a better option? But we won’t know unless we see, ala Marte playing in the bigs.
To win this thing, we MUST get more from our SS.
Huge THANK YOU to TK for the early posting of the line on the Wake-Up Call Thread. Huge THANK YOU again to JAL and JohninOshkosh for posting on this thread and tallying up the (fake) wagers on the other thread. I appreciate all your help immensely.
As a side note, my routine is pretty much set at work now, so I will begin posting the lines as I did before last week. Some nights they may not get posted til around 5:30, but I will do my best to get them posted by 4pm at the latest.
To all who have helped and re-posted for me the past week. THANK YOU!!!
Now to everyone who placed a (fake) wager for tonight’s game, it has been recorded. YOU GOT IT AND GOOD LUCK!!
33 yr old Jay Bell laughs at 33 yr old Clint Barmes…also, he might have something to help Clint out with his AHEM swing…

Playoffs -
Could I get 100 on the under for line 1 and 100 on the over for line 2.
This day has been long waiting with anticipation tonight for the game. Glad the power never went out with the storms.
@Playoffs
Line #1 – 100 on the UNDER
Line #2 – 100 on the OVER
Let’s Go Bucs!
Why Barmes? At this point, not sure, however I trust the actual scouts/coaches more than I do us armchair scouts.
Pitching and defense wins games. His stick isn’t as valuable as his glove. Though I would like to see Mercer play more.
Playoffs… 100 fake units on each of today’s lines on the OVER.
@Playoffs
Line 1: 100 Over
Line 2: 100 Over
Playoffs–
There should have been a big Thank You at the end of my fake units post (#65.).
I see lotsa talk about Barmes on the blog tonight. Lucky, Milo, Bob and the other Pirate lifers on this blog will remember Jackie Hernandez play SS for the 1971 World Champion Pirates. That team, with the likes of Clemente, Stargell, Oliver, Hebner, Robertson, Sanguillen, Cash/Stennett, could afford to have a good field, no hit SS in Hernandez.
Barmes is OK for now but, it would be great to give Jordy Mercer a few starts. This kid looks like he might be a keeper, a much better option than the D’Arnaud experiment of 2011.
@Playoffs
Line 1: 70 on the UNDER
Line 2: 50 on the UNDER
@Ryan
Just fyi, here’s the list of SS in the NL hitting worse for the month of July than Barmes (.232) -
Ronnie Cedeno
Stephen Drew
Starlin Castro
Jimmy Rollins
Zach Cozart
Jed Lawrie
So 3 of the 5 SS in the division are hitting worse than Barmes this month, including the division leader. Kinda puts it in perspective.
TDB, Mlr, Naje, Bucco Jax and bman….YOU GOT IT AND GOOD LUCK!!
BIG THANK YOU TO Naje!!
Big thanks as well to Naje and JoshnOshkosh as well for takin’ care of business…love this place…
@bobhasis do you know who the ss was for the Pirates 1971 WS team and his BA?
Barmes’ OBP is still terrible in July; he has one(!) walk for the month.
http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/batting/_/position/ss/split/43/league/nl/sort/onBasePct/minpa/50
For NL SS’s with over 275 PA’s in 2012, CB has the worst OBP in the NL. He has five (?!) walks for the entire season.
http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/batting/_/position/ss/league/nl/sort/onBasePct/minpa/275
Speaking of perspective, the July OPS for the SS’s listed in #70:
Cedeno. .727
Rollins. .654
Laurie. .616
Cozart. .607
Drew. .588
Castro. .569
Barmes. .491
It does put things in perspective.
Gunner,
I remember Earl Weaver said “Hernandez is a dog. You can’t win with him.” Guess he missed on that one.
Jackie Hernandez hit .206 after taking over for an ailing Gene Alley in 1971. My first memories of Bill Mazeroski were playing 3rd base that year while Richie Hebner was off for his 2 weeks in the reserves & Jose Pagan had a broken arm.
Well, less than 24 hours before the big Opening Ceremony in London. The organizers are being tight lipped about the music but here is my British music dream lineup:
OMD, the great British synthpop band plays “Electricity” with a stellar light show by artistic director Danny Boyle.
Oasis plays “Acquiesce” with the Gallagher brothers jamming together singing the appropriately Olympic refrain from the tune “We need each other/We believe in one another”
The Sex Pistols yowl “God Save the Queen” while Boyle’s director cuts to an awkward Queen Elizabeth (I know, Johnny Lydon said he would not perform).
Many days I wish the great Joe Strummer was still with us, but I would love to see the surviving Clash members reunite to play “London Calling.”
Oh, I suppose Paul McCartney can play too. But if the pompous Elton John comes on, I am going to switch to check out the Bucs.
Off to work
Lets Go Bucs and all thanks go to Playoffs!
@ slackboss – 73 (and you too, Lucky – 76)
Jackie Hernandez played the majority of the games at SS for 1971 Bucs – he batted .206.
http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hernaja01.shtml
A big difference versus the 2012 Bucs was the caliber of the supporting cast around Hernandez: Clemente, Stargell, Oliver, Hebner, Robertson, Sanguillen, Cash/Stennett,
@#70, that’s an absurdly small sample size for a batting average comparison. Are you suugesting that were you Theo Epstein you’d be begging NH to take Castro in exchange for Barmes? If not, what’s your point?
Go Bucs!
@ Arriba – yes that puts it in perspective, Barmes is HORRIBLE!
Excited to see Wandy in Bucs uniform throwing a bullpen session and for Marte’s debut. Time to break out the bats this series.
@Gunner
You forgot Charlie Sands.
WOWOOWOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
Impressive…………………..
at least Marte has a decent number and a HR to boot!!!
HOLY S*(&^*&*(^&*(&!!!!!!!!!!! Starling Marte with the BOOM!
WOW!!!!!!!
Welcome Starling Marte….one pitch, one swing BOMB, let him swing!
The Marte ERA indeed!
Boom
Marte is #6 on the uni. HR on FIRST PITCH!!!!
Better trade him now while he is at peak value!!!
I’m glad I didn’t miss that! =D
Better send Marte out. He wasn’t selective enough.
Can you guys think of any recent number 6′s???????
On Tuesday between 2:00 and 2:15 Ronny Cedeno had more hits than Cutch. Trade Cutch for Cedeno and move Tabata to Center! Oh, never mind.
Funny in a chat today Keith Law said the Pirates did not think they gave away much in Grossman and he disagreed, also is not high on Marte at all, hope Starling shows him this is only a sign of things to come.
#AboutTime
Unbelievable!! Glad I settled in to watch the game on time!
Marte!
Cannonballs are being launched tonight in Houston! Jones with a 2 run blast
Wahooooooooooooooooo!!!!!
GI Jones going deep now for a two run bomb!! 3-0 good guys.
@ Roberto – post #26
I’d call that “serious contributions” from Jones!
@ Milo – 82
Ha ha – Charlie Sands. His claim to fame is warming up the most pitchers that year. He sure didn’t get to play much with Sanguillen and Milt May in front of him.
Wow Jones jumps on one and bats are out early staking Burnett to nice lead!
Great season for Jones…..After the breakout season a few years back when he hit 20 homers in 3 months, he’s been marginal at best…..Good job G.I.
And Garrett ‘the Legend’ Jones with a bomb of his own. Off a LHP to boot!
Now if we could just get that CF to contribute something, lol.
Sorry, Marte must work on his plate discipline. One pitch, one home run not good enough.
Hahahaha Lucky!
#6 Rennie Stennett
I sure hope Dejan saw that first blast…it’s 1:15 AM in London
@JMB, the times they are a changin!
@bman
Agreed! SERIOUS against a lefty.
@Jandy
Dejan tweeted about 4 minutes ago – Dejan Kovacevic @Dejan_Kovacevic
I have no snark for you tonight, Pittsburgh. I just hope you’ll enjoy watching Starling Marte play for a lot of years. Good night. #Pirates
Thanks TDB … appreciate it.
Kyle Stark unimpressed. Should have seen mor pitches. Still no plate discipline!
#6 – Jeff Clement
#6 – Orlando Merced
@OM
This is def FUN!
Nice way to start a career.
Should have been called up a month ago, but better late than never.
Who’s that hitting leadoff, Mario Lemieux? Scores on his first AB?
And I’m sure that the Garrett Jones bashers are in hiding again.
Barajas with a walk
BB lol, good comparison!
All right Barmes, it’s time for an HR (or a walk — I aint greedy).
@Slackboss #73
I certainly do; why do you ask? Oh I know you want to draw a favorable comparison for our current SS.
There is a major difference; Jackie Hernandez was a fill-in for the injured Gene Alley. Barmes was the ordained starter, and specifically brought for that.
But I should ask – what was your point in raising the question?
YeeeHAW!
Bombs away for Barmes?!?! I think I’m dreaming.
wow..another bomb
three more HR’s to go this weekend CB….HAHA.
PERFECT TIMING huh MR. SLACKBOSS
Did I really see that correctly, Barmes a HR? Wow route is on!
I really hope Marte is not up just because some potential trading partner wants to see how he hits big league pitching before pulling the trigger. But if so, I hope it’s giving Huntington second and third thoughts about dealing him.
Barmes BOOM
Too small of a sample size though. He must have really looked off balance swinging at that pitch.
I hope Dallas waits until it’s about 10-0 until he gets his head out of his hinter parts. Talk about up in the zone.
Well, he saw 8 pitches that time and his BA dropped .500 points. So much for being selective.
Since Barmes hit one out tonight…all the other starters should be able to hit one out.
he gang… don’t want to be a wet noodle, but this pitcher Keuchel is throwing some really fat, juicy beachballs to the plate. He’s a really bad version of Zach Duke right now.
Ok AJ, there’s 5, go get #12! See if you can get a standing O in Houston!
You’re right, Naje. I saw that one he threw Marte and the one he threw to Jonesy wasn’t much better. I think I could have hit the one out. But, it sure was fun to watch them do that.
Now, give the Bucs some credit. Lots of pitchers throw hittable meaty fastballs, but until they are actually hit and hit well, they don’t mean a thing.
You’re so right, Pig Legs.
@JayG
#6′s that I remember – Rennie Stennett, Tony Pena, Orlando Merced, Mike Benjamin, Jeff Clement
There’s a reason why Houston is 2-22 in its last 24 games.
They weren’t good, and then they traded off about 5 mediocre to good players.
If the Bucs can’t take 3 of 4 or better this weekend, they’re in trouble.
I’d like to think of this as a good spanking for the way the Astros let the Reds jump all over them and didn’t help the Pirates at all in the standings during this past series between them. Take that, Houston!
@bobhasis – I think you get my point – and yes, Clint did kinda make it for me,lol. I think a lot of us bucco fans are suffering from ‘the grass is greener’ syndrome after all these years of losing. While I would love to see an upgrade at SS, Barmes can help his team by being a steady presence up the middle. Would you rather have Cedeno back?
Lucky….
I won’t complain about those home runs… you get a juicy pitch up and out over the plate at about 87mph and you send it a long way. So good to see that from these guys now. How many times in the past 4 years would we have seen those home runs just be fouled back or popped up?
Some nice swings being put on the ball tonight…
I just got home, unreal major league debut for Starling Marte!
Dejan has to be going insane to have missed that! LOL
Pirates 5-0 against the Happ-less Astross (get it, JA Happ)
Thank you, thank you, please tip your waitress on the way out.
@Arriba
You might want to update your stats – Barmes OPS is now the same as Castro – .569
DK may have caught it on the web
I wouldn’t expect a sweep of them. Back in the mid 70′s the Pirates had lots of problems with the lowly Astros, Braves, Mets & Expos, who were four of the worst teams in the national league those days. For various odd reasons, lousy teams can be an awful thorn to a condending team. I have learned to never underestimate the opposition.
Correia going to the bullpen to make room for Wandy
I am maybe the one guy in this blog who liked Cedeno. Just as you point out, as long as Barmes doesn’t do anything to hurt us he’ll be all right. Cedeno was more or less that kind of a player, he had his moments both, good and bad, and didn’t kill us
BUT, this year we are fighting to win the pennant and his continued presence in the lineup is more likely to hurt. Conversely, last year nothing much mattered so Cedeno or not we weren’t going anywhere.
Check out Mercer, let him play 4-5 games just to see what is there. I actually have seen improvement with Barmes, so I’m less adamant than in April, May and June
That was for Slackboss @#143
Marte is now averaging a more agreeable 4.5 pitches-seen/AB.
Still though, he could stand to work on his stolen bases. What, with being a leadoff hitter and all.
They said on the broadcast that Don Leppert was the last Pirate to homer in his 1st AB in 1961. Leppert was the 1st base coach for the 1971 team, keeping with the theme.
Pitcher settling in now.
Astros starter has retired 9 in a row since Barmes HR’ed.
Burnett cruising. Only 32 pitches thru 3 IP, only 1 hit allowed.
Bucs still lead 5-0.
@ Bob. I didn’t have an issue with Cedeno either. And I’m for Mercer getting more playing time too. Barmes has been a weak spot offensively most of the season…tonight is an exception.
They do have a few decent looking ballplayers in Altuve, J.D. Martinez & Justin Maxwell. they are dangerous enough to pitch to carefully. But they definitely are being gutted. Still, if I’m an aAstros fan, I’d be happy they are bringinging in some prospects like they have been. It’s easy to put myself in their shoes after all the grief the Pirates have given me the past 20 years, not to mentions the painful Pittsburgh drug trial era of the ’80s.
H or E?
Hey, who’s the new guy ?
another hit for Marte
Burnett goes 1-2-3 in bottom of 4th. 46 pitches 30 stikes, 1 hit, no walks 3 k’s
just wow
just got to sneak a peak into the game
just wow
gotta admit i wasn’t sure about the kid, and it’s only 1 game so far, but what a debut.
a question to the gallery, how did his 2nd at bat look like? How’s he looking in the field?
thanx
JEEZ THIS GUY…
haha I swear, if I would’ve wagered on Line 1, Marte would be 0-3 with 3 K’s right now
Another hit for Marte very nice debut, should help settle the nerves a bit and give some confidence….and he makes the OVER a winner!
I saw Marte in low-A a few years ago when he was with the Power. He looks stronger and stockier now. Just looked like a kid then. Looks like a man in that #6. Thank God they didn’t give him 64.
And with that infield single in the top of the 5th, Marte wins the OVER with a HR and a single.
@Mike C– 9-pitch at-bat, fly-out to center
@ Boise. I hear ya!
@ Mike C – Marte saw eight pitches in his second AB fouled some off bepfre skying to CF, camera showed Clint Hurdle give him pat in dugout and saying nice at bat!
not many plays in field….had one bloop fall in front of him but no chance to get to it.
Leppert was around coaching right up until ’77 when Tanner took over…Barmes hitting has been bugging me lately and I’d like Mercer to play while he’s still hot, but it may be too late now.
Still, I wouldn’t want Cedeno back ever. Mercer should be playing at least 2-3 times a week from now on unless we bring in a better hitting shortstop. I still would try to get Starlin Castro if possible. I wouldn’t give up Marte though. Taillon, yes.
They’re still the sloppy baserunners
Youth is wasted on the young.
Since we’re talking SS’s tonight, d’Arnaud is starting to make his case. His BA is up to .232 and he’s 2-4 tonight with a triple. Plus, a leadoff guy if you want Marte down in the order. They’re higher on him than they are on Jordy.
That was a weird ending. Also took the RBI chance away from a hot hitting Jones.
McCutchen got picked off that’s why Marte ran home.
Milo,
You’ve seen “It’s a Wonderful Life”.
@Lucky
And neither are the answer (Chase or Jordy).
thanx guys
mental lapse by the kid. cant help but be expected by the rook.
he just needs to settle down, especially after his big hit imo.
Roots feed just showed the infamous Meals game
just threw up a lil in my mouth.
ugh
@bobh 150 – look at Barmes since from June on and the stats do not support making a change – April and May are long gone – along with the Pirates sub .500 record at that time. If he slumps, then make a change. But it is hard to argue against success, both on a team and individual record. We got Mandy, we got Marte, let’s see how this works before changing out a currently productive position player that is a plus defensively. (although I do sometimes wonder who makes up some of these defensive stats, Dr Strangeglove, perhaps?).
The thing about Barmes is that he’s playing outstanding defensively right now. The way they’ve hit since that horrendous start, all they need him to do is catch the ball.
Come on Bucs, get this guy outta here so we can tax their bullpen. Get them all worn out by the weekend………Keuchel has settled down a bit….Let’s go!!….Mcghee and his weak grounders to the left side….
Weren’t our announcers calling McGehee McGayhee earlier this season….And now they pronounce it McGee?????
Didn’t see it mentioned, but the last Buc to hit a HR on his first pitch in the big leagues took place in 1922. Can’t remember the name they mentioned on the telecast.
That guy gave up 5 runs with the first 3 outs and then 0 runs the last 15. They should have done better than that.
@ Jay: They’ll pinch hit for the starter this inning.
Reading a tweet from Old 24/7, Kevin Correia is not at all happy about his demotion. The Pirates are actively shopping him & the Angels might be interested. Can’t imagine much in the way of return. Maybe a lefty reliever is out there somewhere.
@ Milo. Yes, its tough especially since he’s been pitching better. I hope it doesn’t turn into a distraction.
Atta-boy Starling. The OVER finally wins one this week. Thanks to all who played today. See you all tomorrow night for THREE LINE FRIDAY!!

I’m glad the Pirates have A.J. Burnett going tonight and I like the shock value of their early offense but I would like to see them develop to the point where they can turn a 5-0 game into a 10-0 game where everybody can relax. Those games are like extra days off. This game could have been one. I thought McCutchen had a chance to put the game away in the 5th and he watched an 88 mph fastball thigh high middle in and ended up having a weak at-bat.
@SlackBoss -
Let’s just look at Barmes’ OPS from June, .632. That’s by far his best month.
Now let’s compare JUST the June numbers with the season long totals for qualifying shortstops. Assuming he had enough at bats to fit on the list, Barmes would be 9th out of 11… .003 above the 10th place guy, and .050 behind the 8th place guy.
Even at his best, Barmes has been significantly below average offensively. Given that Mercer has been, with the exception of one game, a decent SS from what I’ve seen, the stats certainly point to at least giving Jordy a few starts a week to see what he can do. I’m not suggesting they hand him the job. But I’d love to see them give him 2-3 starts per week and see what happens.
all right AJ!
I felt like Correia was just starting to come around too. It’s actually starting to look like maybe JMac could use a break. The last couple times out he’s got hit pretty hard.
24/7 quoted Clint as saying informing Correia he was being removed from rotation was one of hardest decisions in career but best for team. kind of fell bad for KC and it may be best all around to trade him at this point.
Lost in early runs and now lifeless bats is the job AJ Burnett has done mowing down the Stros and how he is saving our bullpen with another solid effort.
2222,
Thank you for your constant and never ending wet blanket-ness.
And @ Milo Re: Barmes:
I can understand that assessment, that Barmes has played excellent defense recently and thus should remain the starter.
I simply cannot agree with any argument that mentions Barmes’ offense in anything remotely approaching a positive light. If you’re doing it for the defense, fine, I disagree with the decision, but I accept the argument as valid.
Saying “But he’s hitting better!” in this case is meaningless, because better is still horribly bad.
@ Boise. I agree. JMac needs to turn it around. He has looked very average as of late.
JRay and Milo,
I feel bad for Correia, also. He’s won 6 straight decisions. He’s a P to C guy, but he battles. A good lefty reliever would be Bedard. I’d rather see Correia in the rotation than Bedard at this point. But, again, they didn’t ask my opinion.
Double Play!!
@ PigLegs – 170
Don Leppert was always good to have around especially when there was a fight. He was an ex-Marine and a pretty tough guy even when he was a Pirate coach.
I remember listening to his 1st game when he hit the HR on his 1st AB – the Gunner and the Possum doing the call.
Great to see the Bucs strapping it on the Colt .45s tonight. Let’s hope they wear their 1962 throwbacks tomorrow night.
@Demon
100% agreed.
@Lucky
Bedard can’t be a reliever. With all the problems he’s had, I just can’t see him getting up & down 3 or 4 times a game in the bullpen.
Cutch??
McCutchen’s in a funk and they are still winning more than losing. I don’t think he has had an extra base hit since that HR in Colorado and I don’t think that is a coincedence.
From listening to Hurdle talk about Jordy Mercer, and the way he has used him as a late inning replacement at shortstop, I believe he is higher on Mercer than he is on D’arnaud. He has confidence in Mercer’s fielding at the position in late dangerous innings, and he says Jordy could be the Pirates everyday shortstop of the future. He DID say that just last week on one of his pregame interviews.
I like Mercer better for his extra-base hitting ability. I see Chase a singles hitter. I think if Mercer is brought along slowly, he could be a good hitter eventually. I don’t expect a flashy shortstop, but an adequate one at least. You can see how he adjusts slowly to each level he’s been brought up to. I believe Hurdle is smart in using him the way he has cause Mercer needs longer to adjust to the Majors. But I think he WILL adjust because he has at every level, before being jolted again for another rise. At least this is the last level-rising for him and now he can finally get comfortable.
They’re talking about Styx….The game is that exciting…..Suite Madam Blue, fave Styx song, by the way……….
I like Renegade, but only in the 4th quarter of a close game.
@DD #189 – I am confused as to the relevance of Barmes vs other teams SS = Mercer is a better option! What has Mercer done at MLB level to support your argument? Be honest – your argument is that what you imagine Mercer can do is better than what Barmes is doing. Apparently CH and Pirate management do not agree. Compare apples to apples not oranges. Your argument supports a trade, not promoting Mercer. Jeez, your making me defend Clint effin Barmes! At least give me an argument that some fact somewhere supports. You are making me feel used and dirty! Lol.
Chrystal Ball!
2222–I totally get your point. If you look past the first two innings, they look like they did against the Scrubbies. The Bucs still don’t look like the pre-All-Star-break Bucs.
(at the same time, they’re winning and we’re complaining about a SS who bats 8th, so I guess we’re not too bad off…)
Oh…and Snowblind!
Lady
I whole heartedly believe McGehee is pronounced ‘McGay- Hee’.
My first grade teacher had that name and spelling, and thats what we were instructed to say by her.
My feeling is that McGehee has given up correcting people after dealing with it his whole life, and some people just arent coordinated enough to pronounce it correctly.
So they allow the “McGee”. I still say McGay Hee.
Am I the only one nervous ?
Yeah, it’s so funny the songs they call the Styx greatest hits on those radio commercials. If those are their best hits, I’d say they stunk. You gotta love history revisioning.
When I was young the best Styx songs were Light up be happy, Suite Madame Blue, Grand Illusion, Come Sail Away, Fooling Yourself, and some others I forget. Pittsburgh was rockin’ to those tunes.
3 outs to go for an ugly win.
@SlackBoss -
You from #178 – “look at Barmes since from June on and the stats do not support making a change”
I took this to mean that you consider Barmes’ offense stats to be decent since June. I compared them to other NL SS’s to show that no, they are not. I have no clue how you believe that the “stats do not support making a change”. What exactly were you referring to then?
Your argument against Mercer seems to be… He hasn’t proven anything at the major league level, so he can’t possibly be any good. I’m asking for a few starts a week so we might actually see if he’s any good. Not really sure why that’s unreasonable… Not like he’d be replacing a ’27 Yankee. His limited stats are decent, especially recently.
Milo hush! ;X
Styx songs. I loved them while I was growing up.
They’re a chicago band and they started with the classic “Lady.”
Some of my favorites besides the ones listed above are Queen of Spades, Rock and Roll Shoes, Half Penny-Two Penny, Crystal Ball, Lorelei, and Miss America. Not very well known but great songs.
Still trying to forget Mr. Roboto though, darn you Dennis DeYoung!
We’ll hang on, I’m not totally nervous yet. Hammer Time.
2222, how is this an UGLY win??
From Mr. Roboto and on, they completely lost me. ‘Jump the shark’ is the proper term I believe. Mr Roboto is as ‘jump the shark’ as Fonzie’s actually shark jump, it’s that bad.
wow Pedro looked great there!
@Playoffs -
If the Pirates don’t win 10-0 with a no-hitter, it’s an UGLY win.
Alvarez is officially ‘perfectly fine’ in my book. I don’t ever complain about him anymore. I can live with his shortcomings, and I believe they will diminish anyway. What he brings easily makes up for them.
I think any time you can hit 3 HR’s in the first 2 innings, manage 7 scoreless afterwards and your closer qualifies for a save…yeah that’s not pretty. But I’m not complaining!
Speaking of Styx, how many of you guys remember Hershel from DVE????….
Maybe Correia + something for Bourjos?
Supposedly the Angels are looking to move Vernon Wells and pick up most of his salary too, but I don’t think I want him.
@Demon,
Even the “The Wet Blanket” would find something to complain about.
The Hammer is having a rough time
Big Deal 5-3. Were going to win.
Hammer is going to kill Barajas
2 strikes
Vernon Wells could get rejuvenated here, it’s intriguing.
I like ugly wins
What a nice Grand Illusion
I’m off to bed. 4am comes very early
In the post-season we will fondly recall July 26th 2012 as ‘Starling Night’.
Behind a nice debut from Starling Marte and solid pitching from AJ Burnett the Bucs hold on for a 5-3 win in game one of the four game set versus the Stros and there was nooooooooo doubt about it.
The Bucs move back to 14 games above .500 and will look for their third consecutive win tomorrow night when Jeff Karstensbtakes the hill.
Whew a win is a win, hope for a little better tomorrow, let’s go bucs!
They started the roadtrip with a win they had to have to get back to 14 over. They win the game in hand on the Reds. Other than that, that game was pathetic. 8 innings of slumbering offense against the worst team in baseball.
64 games to play.
2 games back of the Reds for first.
2 games up on ATL for the home wild card.
3.5 up on STL for the road wild card. Dodgers now 4 back.
Shocked Marte has not yet gotten the pie in the face from AJ.
Barmes hit the ball well tonight. Maybe if he’d just swing for the fences all the time he could run into one here and there and redeem himself to a small degree. Whatever he’s been swinging for up till last night hasn’t worked at all, what does he have to lose?
2222,
You have made pathetic and slumbering posts for 3 full months now. Give it a rest. Seriously.
14 games up and only 2 out of 1st. If you don’t like that, please find another team or better yet find another blog.
The verbal diarrhea you post every day is beyond boring.
One thing I love about A.J. is he always gives a quality start. I never had any doubts about us winning from the first inning on because of A.J. pitching and knowing what he’d do.
Twenty22 – consider this….the reds took two games against the pathetic Astros because Cordero blew two 9th inning leads and suffered blown saves, a win on the road against any MLB team no matter how bad is big. The Bucs had this game won after two innings.
#EnjoyingTheRide
Procrastination is a wasteful way of life.
They did that with Marte and BANG, he lived up to expectations.
There is a growing need to rid our team of a .206 hitting SS and give an opportunity to one of two guys now – Mercer or d’Arnaugh – without waiting another minute.
We will soon be up to our butts in alligators aka Reds and Cards, and mediocrity will not suffice. Use today as a starting point and count the games you needed a better SS.
I’ll spot Barmes this game because of his HR.
If you concede the pitching is more than adequate, and a corner outfield spot has improved offensively, then the spotlight should be on SS first, then C, and some intermittant relief at 3B. We need help at those locations, unless you are content with what we have.
Good luck
More credit to Garrett Jones I must give. I said for years he was never being given anything to hit because basically he was easy to pitch around, but no longer. With Cutch ahead and decent bats below with McGehee & the always dangerous (for pitchers), young Pedro Stargell lurking,… pitchers are now giving Garrett Jones the best pitches he’s seen since he was an unknown rookie the first year with the Pirates.
Garrett’s always been among the team leaders in slugging pct and total bases, the two most important stat categories for a hitter to me. Personally I’ve never cared what his batting average was.
Just got home from work, got to see the replay of the Marte bomb…
Reaction from what I think was the press box was awesome. Neverett was still announcing his first MLB at-bat and all you hear is OHHHHHH!!!!!
How long until Greg Brown says MartePartay during a game and makes it official?
GO BUCS RAISE IT
Greg Brown was great and exciting on the call. Bob Walk felt the magic of this year and was matter-of-factly about.
I wonder how well a 1B would fit into the lineup… You could move Jones to be a full time RF, especially with Cutch and Marte to roam the rest of the OF. I know he’s not great, but he’s seemed a lot less lost this year.
Basically would mean McGehee losing playing time, but he seems to have cooled off significantly, so not sure that’s a big loss.
Cincinnati plays at Colorado this weekend. They are 3-14 there since 2007.

Let’s hope they hit the baseball and Jim Tracy manages to squeeze 2 of 3 from the Reds.
On the other hand those guys on ‘The Fan’ after the game are atrocious. The one guy talks non-stop and is annoying. The callers get to say about 6-7 words and then he just goes on a motor-mouth binge for 10 minutes.
Whatever happened to that one guy a couple years ago, he was likable and always gave the callers time to talk? The guy that got hit with the baseball and was out for a long time? I forgot his name, but compared to the ones now he was a breath of fresh air.
