Comments

  1. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I’d like to see either a RF or 1B get picked up. McGheheheee back to the bench.

Hopefully, Jones’s trip, fall, snipe attack won’t happen again…..yup, still laughing, poor guy.

  2. Bizrow says:

    McKenry again, interesting

  3. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

gotta figure he’ll get most of the starts, except for AJ.

  4. Bizrow says:

Yup, I must admit Fort was a heck of a pickup, who’d a thunk it?

  5. pants-n-at says:

The Pirates are 8-2 in McKenry’s last 10 starts. He deserves more playing time. Nothing against Barajas, but playing that position in this heat at his age may be getting to him. Give the younger guy a shot, he’s earned it.

  6. Neal is a last minute, look for the bargain kind of guy. He probably doesn’t buy his wife’s Christmas present until Christmas Eve, when whatever is left is marked down.

Last year Derrek Lee and Ryan Ludwick popped up in the last hours, for almost nothing in return. He seems to be taking the same tact this year.

Let’s hope he has his finger on the trigger for a hitter that can also catch the ball.
Soriano will always be there, even after the deadline!

We’ll know tomorrow, shortly after 4:00.

  7. pants-n-at says:

@ Ryan. I guess I spoke too soon mentioning his appearance on plays of the day last week against the Cubs!

  8. NMR says:

‘Nother big start for Bedard. Let’s hope Searage works his magic again.

  9. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    @Groat

Even if he doesn’t, he’s put together one heck of a team so far……..except for SS, though Barmes as done well at the position lately.

  10. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    @pants

Nah, he’s done well for the most part……but that sure was funny yesterday.

  11. Lawnbeaver says:

    Lawnbeaver’s Trade Deadline Haiku

    Kendrys Morales
Would look great in black and gold
    Pull the trigger Neal

    .

  12. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

If the Pirates were in the AL, sure…..

  13. Lawnbeaver says:

Barmes has been great in the field after a rough start, but is offense is just plain awful.

  14. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

.226 over the last 10 games…..I don’t think there’s any SS available that could help this team though. That’s a bit of a problem.

  15. Barmes could cross the .210 mark with two hits tonight.

I’m not Range Resources, but I smell a gusher coming!!

  17. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    100 on the UNDER

  18. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Man, I lost 300 points on this weekend….

  19. Kevin says:

    Playoffs –

Gonna have to take the UNDER on this line, please. Thank you.

  20. crkkid says:

    @ playoffs

Let me have 100 on the under.

    Thanks!

  21. Lawnbeaver says:

There are SS available, but who would we have to give up to acquire them. Yunel Escobar’s name has been out there.

  22. Stickyweb says:

    Playoffs

    100 on the over please

  23. Lawnbeaver says:

Shouldn’t Playoffs be responsible for having an 800 # for all of the compulsive gamblers on this site?

I’ll take 100 on the under. Make me pay, Jonesy!!

  24. Stickyweb says:

    Ryan

At least you had 300 points to lose. Some of us haven’t even sniffed 300 points yet. Or a positive figure for that matter!

  25. Bradster says:

If Neil doesn’t pull the trigger I could see a move to bring up Clement as he has decent splits between RHP and LHP. Not sure though who they would take off of the 40 man.

  26. Kevin says:

Well said, Stickyweb…well said. -100 is the closest I’ve ever been to ZERO!

  27. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    @Sticky

Ha, true, but I had a good lead there for awhile……..I went with my heart instead of my brain this weekend…freakin’ Astros.

  28. TK says:

    100 on the over please.

  29. @Playoffs, I’ll see how close I can get to the even mark by going 100 on the OVER for tonight. The UNDER has been killing some of us the past week, but I think Wrigley may change that tonight. Let’Z Go BucZ!!

  30. DemonDachshund says:

    @Playoffs

    100 on the OVER please

  31. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Funny, Escobar has roughly the same contract as Barmes, but with 2 additional team options.

Batting average is about 50 points higher than Barmes. .273 over the last 10 games as well.

Can’t find anything on the asking price, though the A’s seem to be a team that’s after him.

  32. DemonDachshund says:

The issue with getting a better shortstop is… They aren’t going to pay $10M+ to fill one position next year.

  33. Just read this headline on the mothership site:
    http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/8215439/ex-world-series-mvp-jose-rijo-charged-dominican
Oh, Jose Rijo, how far have you fallen. Laundering money for a drug trafficker.

  34. NMR says:

The Red Sox are getting great contributions from their backup shortstop.

    That would be Pedro Ciriaco.

  35. My bad on that story above. I think the Bucs faced Rijo too much in the 90′s that I thought he played for the Bucs for a brief time too. Either way, interesting story.

  36. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Yup……..the other Pedro.

  37. Kevin says:

    @NMR

    BURN!! Nice. Good point.

  38. bman says:

    @playoffs

I’ll go with 100 on the UNDER

  39. Hal Smith says:

I will take 50 on the UNDER. And I hope I’m wrong!

  40. Lawnbeaver says:

    @NMR
Yeah, I’ve noticed that too. I wonder how we could have landed him?

How is his D? I don’t remember him really doing anything but pinch running last year.

  41. Lawnbeaver says:

Are the Pirates still using the same talent evaluators from the Littlefield Era, or are they all gone? I seem to recall that Huntington kept a bunch of them.

  42. radio wave says:

    at playoffs:
    Will the Reds ever lose?
don’t expect the Padres to help much.
I’ll take 75 on the under tonight.
    Thanks

  43. Naje says:

    Playoffs… 100 fake-ies on the OVER tonight please… and thank you…

  44. Mike C. says:

i was -400 or early on but slowly creeping up =)

@playoffs – I’ll take the UNDER for 100 please. thank you

thank god Cutch is back in the lineup.
Bedard, here’s hoping you prove that you’re waaaay better than Correia, and it’s You that doesn’t belong in the bullpen.
Barring injury, I do still believe he’s going to be good enough the rest of the season.

  45. LuckyNKentucky says:

Wasn’t Ciraco all field, no-hit? He’s around .360 with his BA. Oh well, the Indy to Pgh. transport had to knock off a run because of him not being with the Bucs. Guess it balances out. I know, small sample size.

  46. Milo Hamilton says:

When the Braves got Alex Gonzalez for Yunel Escobar a few years ago, the Braves players gave Gonzalez a standing ovation when he first arrived in the Atlanta clubhouse. Not because of anything he did, but because he wasn’t Yunel Escobar. True story. The guy’s a clubhouse cancer.

  47. Bizrow says:

Well, I’ve been getting Kevin Correa’d on the OVAH

100 nuggets on the UNDAH pleeze?

  48. JRay3 says:

@ Playoffs – Good afternoon. Well leg two of the road trip begins tonight and with as hot as the Reds are we have to keep pace or this race could start slipping away from us and have us shifting gears to the WC race. Bedard has thrown a couple of nice games and going against a recent call-up we should have the advantage this evening.

As for your line. Ok so I took a peak at Jones’ line for all games in the month of July to see what trends I could spot. In the 23 games he has played in the month of June he has only netted 5+ H+BB+R+RBI’s three times his most recent at the game I was in attendance for back on July 18th in Colorado when he pounded three hits, scored twice and had 3 RBI’s. He is currently on a streak of ten straight games without 5+ in those categories. I actually think the Reds win streak has a better shot of ending tonight against Volquez.

That said I will take 100 on the UNDER!

    Thanks and Let’s Go Bucs!

  49. NMR says:

Ciriaco certainly wasn’t tearing the cover off the ball in Indy last year, but never got many MLB at-bats, either.

Stories like his bother me when people make statements like, “the Pirates have no other choice but to play Barmes. Hurdle doesn’t even have enough confidence in Mercer to give him starts.”

Well, if Hurdle was a flawless talent evaluator, then that logic would hold water. If he’s human like the rest of us, then Pedro Ciriaco is your perfect case study.

Not saying Ciriaco would’ve broken out with the Pirates if given the opportunity, just that nobody struggling to hit .200 deserves the unquestionable benefit of the doubt. Honestly, what do the Pirates have to lose?

Oh well, they’re 10-6 since the break, 15 games over .500. I’m enjoying Pirates baseball, as always.

  50. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    @Milo

Current reports on Escobar say that he’s matured since his Atlanta days and that the attitude issue is overblown.

Who knows really, could be just a Blue Jays way of getting rid of him.

  51. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

So who hits the HR for the Buccos tonight?? Make it 20 in a row on the road.

  52. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    According to MLB.com

The Pirates lead all MLB teams in road HR’s, with 72. Amazing how far they’ve come, really.

  53. Milo Hamilton says:

    @Ryan

To quote the great Yogi Berra, I’ll believe it when I believe it. Hey, maybe they’ll take Tabata for him. Trade headache for headache. Neal couldn’t have been more complimentary of Joggin Joe yesterday. Same as you said about the Jays.

  54. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I missed the Neal quote…….I bet is was a typical one by NH though.

Who knows, but I don’t see the Pirates making a trade for a SS and having $10M of their own money devoted to one position…….

  55. Stuart says:

    Playoffs,
Please wager 50 rialls on the under.

    Stuart66

  56. Curt says:

I will take 100 on the UNDER. Missed the last few days on vacation.

Now lets please grab Victorino at a discount or pony up a little for Hunter Pence and I will not complain!

    One more bat.

  57. DemonDachshund says:

Actually, looks like Tabby’s sick of the bus rides… Has his average up to .276 at least, hitting .324 in the last 10 games.

IF the light has gone on and IF it stays on… Well, I still can’t excuse them doing nothing before 4PM tomorrow.

  58. Bizrow says:

NMR, there are 10 million reasons why Barmes starts. Lately his lack of stick hasn’t hurt us and his defense has helped.

But with the sticks seemingly cooling down, Barmes has to produce

If he doesn’t, we are toast

    Just sayin

  59. Chico says:

    100 on the under, please.

  60. Bucco_Jax says:

    @playoffs

    100 under

  61. RobertoForever says:

Still confused by the focus on Barmes. Iirc, many said if he hit around .250 and played good D, then that was fine. He has done just that in the months of June and july. I could care less how much he gets paid. I did think we should have signed Jamey Carroll in the of season. But I see little issue with playing him most days. Course I would love to have Furcal or Jeter, but that’s not reality.

  62. pants-n-at says:

Playoffs. Give me 100 on the under, I hope I lose

  63. Arriba Wilver says:

Playoffs—100 Kevin Correia gold stars on the UNDER, please.

  64. DemonDachshund says:

    @RF -

Why is it confusing to want to replace a player who has posted OPS numbers of .632 and .553 in his GOOD months?

    Are you his agent?

  65. piratemike says:

After watching Mercer with his finger up his butt yesterday he would be playing in the GCL today. I hate having Barmes in this lineup but at least he gives you full effort in the field. I just can’t stand seeing a young player given a chance to prove himself after years in the minors and he nonchalants it on the field like he has it made.

  66. DemonDachshund says:

    Lyle Overbay DFA’d.

    I’m not even going there.

  67. Kevin says:

    @ Demon –

Just stole my thunder! Was gonna say Lyle was available!!

  68. bobhasis says:

For a guy who has been in next to last place most of the season, since I went into a Barmes, I mean slump, I have the perfect analysis for tonight’s window; Jones hits a home run his first two times at bat, leaving him to need .5 more to cover the over. His third at bat produces nothing. We get to the bottom of the seventh and he is replaced for defensive purposes. Hence the UNDER prevails, so I’ll take UNDER 4.5 for 50 zloties.

This is why I’m in next to last place.

    Thank you Playoffs

  69. RobertoForever says:

    @Playoffs

I am one of Jones biggest proponents. And I would love to go all in. But, this isn’t the Bucs offense of June. I think the Bucs win, but with contributions from a variety of sources.

So I will take the UNDER for 100.

    Let’s Go Bucs

  70. RobertoForever says:

    @Demon

    You misread my post.

  71. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Read today that the Astros are saying they will now trade shortstop Jed Lowrie if they get a decent offer. Lowrie is out right now with a sprained ankle (and he seems to get hurt quite often, which is his only real drawback). He has 14 homers this year and was on pace to hit 30 homers before his injury. He’s always been more noted for his hitting, but is pretty good defensively, and has never made many errors. Of course, he’s been hurt so often it is hard to guess what he would do in a full season. I’d take a shot on him if the price is right.

  72. RobertoForever says:

    @Demon,

Sorry, I didn’t answer your question.

No I am not Clint Barmes agent. I am Garrett Jones agent.

  73. jeffsbar says:

    @Playoffs

    100 on the UNDER

    Thank you.

  74. RobertoForever says:

    @Pig Legs

Who would you offer for him. What is the Max you would consider reasonable?

  75. Mlrgenuine says:

    @Playoffs

Wow, Did not expect to see my name at the top of the standings!

Let’s keep the positive vibe going

    100 on the OVER please.

    Let’s Go Bucs!!!

  76. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Couple of semi-prospects. That’s probably what they want.

  77. LuckyNKentucky says:

So, if we got Lowrie, what about Roberto’s 10-million dollar man? Does he become a utility guy and JHay goes or some other senario?

  78. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Actually probably a prospect like a Justin Wilson or Tony Sanchez and maybe a throw in semi-prospect. Theyre always seemingly looking for catchers and pitchers.
Jed Lowrie is a better hitter than Yunel Escobar, and at least he’s not a clubhouse poison.
Like I said, he definitely spends the majority of most seasons on the DL, so that would be the only main drawback. But seeing what he did in his first taste of the national league this year, his hitting would be quite welcome. I’d take him over Stephen Drew, he has more power and they both get hurt about the same frequency.

  79. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Got home from work a few minutes ago, hopped on here and started reading and jotting down the (fake) wagers for tonight. You guys absolutely crack me up. The analysis and then the analysis of the analysis never ceases to amaze and entertain me.

    THANK YOU

….and to everyone who has placed a (fake) wager for tonight, you got it and good luck.

I realize today was supposed to be MULTI-LINE MONDAY, but work got the better of me and all I could get was one line up in time for everyone. I’ll do a double line either for tomorrow or Wednesday.

  80. Cmat0829 says:

Playoffs….can I please have the OVER for 100 FUs. Thank you

  81. I think the Bucs let Pedro Ciriaco go last Fall because:

1/ They were struggling for space for the first time on the 40-man
2/ They were pretty convinced that they had their shortstop of the future in Chase D’arnaud. He just needed to develop some seasoning and consistency at AAA for a year. D’arnaud makes the sensational plays, then screws up the basic plays. I think they saw Chase spending a whole year at AAA, then either starting 2013 at AAA with an early season call-up, or maybe even making the 2013 club as a back-up, eventually to replace Barmes during the 2013 season. D’arnaud has a really exciting skill set for a dynamic shortstop.
3/ The Pirates thought also highly about Jordy Mercer, but his schedule would have been a year behind D’arnaud——2014 would have been his step up season if D’arnaud did not work out. He was set to play 2B at Indy this year.
4/ D’arnaud’s schedule got thrown all out of whack because he got hit in the head in his 3rd game. He missed 2+ months with a concussion, and then had to start all over again, like Spring Training when he came back. He has just been rounding into stellar shape as a player in the last 3-4 weeks.
5/ Remember: in Spring Training the Pirates had a Rule 5 shortstop, Yamico Navarro, and that little Dominican (can’t remember his hame right now). They thought one of the three would make the roster as the needed back-up middle infielder/shortstop. None panned out. Navarro can’t play short. They tried Harrison: he is inconsistent at short, to be kind. Sutton can’t play short. While Mercer was playing so much short at Indy in D’arnaud’s absence, he became their only back-up option for the Major League club. That’s why he’s here, but Pirates apparently still don’t feel he’s ready to play.

I think Bucs felt they had their next two years worth of shortstops at AAA in D’arnaud and Mercer. Injuries and lack of viable short backups at the Major League level messed up those plans.

Will Chase D’arnaud be ready to compete at shortstop in 2013 . . . that is the question.

  82. Pig Legs Robinson says:

That’s probably the scenario if they get any shortstop. Barmes would be that veteran bench guy, unless they want to eat his contract. Maybe he can pitch?

  83. Nate83 says:

    100 on the under. Thanks

  84. Playoffs by 2012 says:

    @Kevin,

how many units on the UNDER??

  85. Playoffs by 2012 says:

cmat and nate, you got it and good luck!!

  86. LuckyNKentucky says:

    Groat,

I think the top-notch shortstop evaluators in the FO saw Pedro as a utility player at best, and he may well be. I hope, for his sake, he keeps up the pace or at least keeps hitting in the clutch as he has. He won’t hit .360 for a season, and he is streaky, but hope he continues to at least hit in the clutch. That’ll keep him off the freeways.

  87. Eric Bowser says:

    “great” bunt Presley…

  88. Kevin says:

    Geez…sorry…100.

  89. How much of Correia’s execrable outing last night is due to petulance?

DK: Five stars, man, for elegant use of ‘execrable.’

    Cheers!

  90. twentytwo22 says:

    3 weak at-bats.

  91. twentytwo22 says:

Nice first inning. They have 2011 ringing in their ears.

  92. twentytwo22 says:

    Pirates’ record for SP
    Correia 11-8
    Bedard 7-12

  93. DemonDachshund says:

IT’S THE END OF THE WORLD!

  94. DemonDachshund says:

Was that a 5 on the SD line in Cincy?

Wait, are they allowed to be trailing?

  95. DemonDachshund says:

    Actually, it’s now a 9.

    9-3 Padres, T3.

Of course, since we’re clearly going to go in a tailspin since we’ve made 6 whole outs in this game, we should probably start discussing all the salary dump trades NH should make by the deadline tomorrow.

  96. twentytwo22 says:

Pathetic offense. 0 games of good offense, good pitching, and good defense. I’m starting to think they are incapable of it.

  97. 92, even so, who among us hasn’t faced that at work? The solution is to soldier on and show what you’ve got, not to lay an egg on your co-workers. This is what I respect most about Karstens. His question to management is, “What does the team need me to do?” and his answer is ALWAYS to give it his level (or ridiculously sharp breaking slow curving) best.

  98. Kevin says:

Although not as seemingly downtrodden as twentytwo22…should I consider this an “uh-oh” moment?

I think I need talked off the ledge again…someone help.

  99. Jandy says:

Kevin, give me your hand….get ur butt over here,, dude!!!! :p

  100. DemonDachshund says:

    @Kevin -

It’s 1-0… And their run scored when the batter reached base after striking out.

The Bucs were no hit for the first time through the lineup on Friday. That game turned out ok.

And Cincy is not doing well tonight. Of course, much like this game still has plenty of innings left, so does that one.

Oh, and if that isn’t enough, remember that the Bucs still have a 3 game lead for the 2nd wild card.

  101. LuckyNKentucky says:

    Barmes! Our hero!

  102. Jandy says:

dayum, had Bedard RAN he’d have been ON! Grrrr!

  103. Jandy says:

    WOOT!!! marte!!!

  104. The exact reason why these pitchers need to start running the plays out. If he is running even decent speed he may beat out that bunt since the third baseman is on his can and almost threw it away anyway.

  105. Way to go Marte with a single for the two out RBI. Tie game 1-1.

  106. Jandy says:

OK boys, now hold ‘em….Bedard, some more K’s please :)

  107. 10-4 now in Cincy.

  108. DemonDachshund says:

    Oh, hey, lookie dat.

    1-1.

I’m going to go play the lottery. I must be psychic to predict that a comeback was possible.

  109. Jandy says:

    Way to go Dachsie ;)

  110. Bedard grew up in the junior circuit under the DL. Has body made of glass.

  111. RobertoForever says:

    @Pig Legs

Houston would probably take that deal. I would also give up Wilson, but I would probably not offer Sanchez. Hopefully NH does inquire.

By the way, isn’t it usually the deals you don’t hear about that get done. Let’s hope this deal, or maybe a deal for Span gets done.

  112. bobhasis says:

That HR per game average for Pedro is taking a butt-kicking lately. I’d settle for a line single, or even a line drive out, instead of K-k-k-k-k time after time and looking overmatched in the process.
Now there is a guy who I wouldn’t mind getting a maintenance WEEK off, to rethread his head onto his neck. I have seen the power and love it, but as in golf 100% of putts that are short do not go in. Such is the analogy to Pedro, 100% of the swings and misses never become HR’s.

He’s becoming more frustrating than Barmes. Nice work for ole Clint so far tonight

  113. Kevin says:

    Jandy, friends, et al –

    THANK YOU!!

  114. Keith says:

    Mancuso:

“Bedard grew up in the junior circuit under the DL.”

    Was that a Freudian slip?

  115. Jandy says:

Hey, kevin, don’t mention it ;)

  116. Keith says:

And, if Bedard took a Freudian slip, would he land on the DL? (Or DH?)

  117. Jandy says:

    lol

  118. Pig Legs Robinson says:

I am not so sure that the Correia situation is complete truth. The Pirates have been trying to trade Correia all year. He only had a rotation spot because first Morton was hurt, then Karstens, then Morton was out for the year. If any of that hadn’t happened, he would have been in the bullpen long ago. I think him saying that he wants to start is more of a way for the Pirates to drum up bigger interest in him and get a wider audience of GM’s to notice that he’s on the block and has won 5 straight games. They know his value looks good right now, if only GM’s would take the time to look at his stats. Having Correia get vocal about a trade is helping the Pirates AND Correia get more publicity, so I think there is some mutual working together going down between them.
I think him getting knocked around yesterday was certainly not his desire, he was pitching to the best of his ability. It just didn’t work out.

  119. Bedard gets the k/9, but that elevates his pitch count, he needs rescued after 5 or 6 innings.

  120. Jandy says:

    Intentional walk….it starts

  121. Jandy says:

Bedard: See GI run…see GI reach first safely…

  122. If this is a plot to drum up trade interest in Correia, I want to know who was dumb enough to believe in the plan.

  123. RobertoForever says:

    @lucky,

He’s not my 10 million guy, he’s the PIRATES 10 million guy. I am sure if you donated 10 million, they would give him to you to send to any team of your choosing.

As I have stated, I would have signed Jamey Carroll for 7 million. Of course, his OPS is only .515 this month, so the armchair GM’s would be declaring him an abject failure, I’m sure.

  124. JohninOshkosh says:

Interesting that Ryan Dempster is scheduled to start for the North Siders tomorrow against AJB. Don’t know if the Cubs are planning to use a Triple A starter but the Iowa Cubs are in New Orleans so they will have to let someone know early in the morning to catch the flight from the Big Easy to Chicago.

  125. JohninOshkosh says:

Second time around the lineup for the Bucs against this young pitcher. Lets put up some runs!

  126. Kevin says:

    @ Jandy –

Just wanted to mention, it is nice to see you on the Pirate thread…I always enjoy your Penguin contributions. Seems as if you have drank the Pirate Kool-Aid! Very nice, indeed.

  127. Jandy says:

    shouldn’t Pedro be safe???

  128. Jandy says:

Kevin, why thank you, sir! =D

  129. Pig Legs Robinson says:

It not any kind of plot, but they arent exactly working against each other. Correia certainly isn’t doing any kind of Operation Shutdown like Blyleven did.

  130. DemonDachshund says:

Thank you Barney for the lead.

    And good hustle Fort.

  131. Pig Legs Robinson says:

I was never really big on Jamey Carroll, but that’s mainly because he has two girl’s names.

  132. Jandy says:

Poor hubby, he thinks I’m nuts lol

  133. Jandy says:

Pigs, don’t forget, the blog’s author’s name is Lisa ;)

  134. @Jandy, I think the 2nd Baseman had caught the ball, but then dropped it during the transfer to throw. Runner is usually out on those. With today’s umpires, who knows, though.

  135. Still 10-4 good buddies in Cincy in the top of the 5th. San Dog still up.

  136. Jandy says:

Steve, thanks for the reply, I saw he dropped the ball, and expected Pedro to be given a safe at that…oh well…

  137. JohninOshkosh says:

I contribute the Pirates success to Jandy. She decided to follow the Bucs closely this year and, voila, they are having a winning season.

  138. JohninOshkosh says:

    should be “attribute” Long day.

  139. Jandy says:

See? You guys are the best! OshKoshB’Gosh, you’re makin’ me smile =D

  140. Jandy says:

well, it’s official, hubby is bored…he’s suckin the paint off the walls LOL

  141. Jandy says:

    Crap!

  142. Pig Legs Robinson says:

    Yuck.

  143. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Who doesn’t think “as the beaver” everytime the announcers say “Joe Mather”?

  144. JohninOshkosh says:

Darwin proves to be fit, if not the fittest, with that blast.

  145. Jandy says:

OK boys we need some RUNS!

  146. twentytwo22 says:

Bedard is the anti-Ray Searage pitcher. He’s afraid of the bat. The Pirates players know they have a chicken on the mound and that’s why they do so poorly behind him. Get rid of this bum.

  147. Kevin says:

    Jandy –

As much as I appreciate the talk…STILL ON THE LEDGE.

Been with this team since 1979 (and before)….HELP!

(FYI to all) No response necessary.

  148. Correia is jealous of Bedard. I’m guessing Clint is not sympathetic, and senses potential toxin in the clubhouse.

  149. Playoffs by 2012 says:

  152. Jandy says:

    Marte is on!

  153. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Can we here on the blog trade twentytwo22 for Overbay?

  154. Parrothead01 says:

Everybody keeps writing that Correia needed to be removed from rotation. Ecause he would implode in second half. Hasn’t Bedard already done that? Worst record on team and probably in National League, higher ERA and frequently walks bad hitters to get himself in trouble.

  155. Jandy says:

Kevin, I followed the Pirates with my Dad when I was a young girl. Always watched them to some extent…as hockey is my passion. But with the long off-season the past couple years, I needed to reach out to baseball to keep from going crazy….lost cause!

  156. Jandy says:

In all fairness, Bedard has had some bad breaks tonight. Then our guys do boneheaded things to cost us runs. ::shakin my head::

  157. Jandy says:

twnetytwo22, tell me, does anything the Pirates do make you happy? or are you just naturally unhappy?

  158. Pig Legs Robinson says:

I kind of enjoyed that last remark by 22. Made me laugh. I could see my Mother making a comment like that. She really gets passionately angry at times with the Pirates. She used to hate John Milner. “Oh here comes “to the Fence” Milner! He’ll hit it all the way to the fence and it will be caught! He does that every time!” She even stll brings him up. “Who was that guy who always hit it to the fence? Milner? I couldn’t stand him!”

  159. Playoffs by 2012 says:

twentytwo22 is a neckbearded troll, who only shows up to sh!t-stir.

  160. Jandy says:

See? Poor Bedard can’t get any help…

  161. twentytwo22 says:

That is on Presley. Unless it’s a hit-and-run the #2 hitter is supposed to take pitches to let the leadoff guy to steal.

Clown baseball by a team in a pennant race. No end in sight.

  162. Jandy says:

Playoffs, easy, man….don’t lower yourself to trolldom level ;)

  163. Jandy says:

    you gotta be kidding me…

  164. Jandy says:

we’re doing as well as the Reds tonight, I think…

  165. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Hang in there Correia, things are looking up for you.

  166. Reading says:

Can we get Bedard out of there? Reds losing for first time in a week and a half and this stiff is getting shelled. Come on Man!!!

  167. The Gunner says:

    Sufferin catfish!!!!! Geez!!!!!!!!

  168. The Gunner says:

Make the deal for Maholm NOW!!!!

  169. Jandy says:

Gunner, I thought it was sufferin’ succotash????

  170. Pig Legs Robinson says:

I’m still surprised the Bucs havent made a bigger play to get this Starlin Castro. He probably won’t be this close to being available ever again.

  171. Reading says:

Let’s just let them get some more guys on base! Where is the hook? What is going on? Are we trying to win or not? Might as well get Correia up so they can put up a dozen.

  172. Jandy says:

    There’s a K :)

  173. Reading says:

    Correia and Bedard for Choo.

  174. The Gunner says:

    SOB!!!!

  175. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Wind blowing out at Wrigley tonight. No lead is safe.

  176. Kevin says:

Now I am truly in an “UH OH” moment…This is not acceptable

  177. Jandy says:

    Sweet relief!

  178. Reading says:

Quality effort there. Maybe he can pitch the one-game Wild Card playoff.

  179. Parrothead01 says:

What is more likely to happen? A.J. win 20 or Bedard lose 20. Doesn’t look like we should trade Correia.

  180. The Gunner says:

    @ Reading – 76

Add Scabata and it should be a done deal. And, if the Tribe needs a batting practice pitcher, we’ll include Bedard.

Man, all of this is making me despondent!!!!

  181. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Kendry Morales has 2 HR’s and 6 RBI’s tonite. Mkae it happen Neal.

  182. Jandy says:

Parrothead, that’s a good line for Playoffs ;)

  183. twentytwo22 says:

They haven’t looked this bad since last summer. If they don’t get it straightened out it is going to start reflecting in the W/L column. When I see them giddy after ugly wins I know they have a long way to go. Championship teams know when they get away with less than their best and work to get better. Right now every game is substandard. Who is going to snap this team to attention? Being embarrassed in Houston and Chicago in back to back games should be the last straw.

That 2011 team is still in uniform. They have to kill it to get rid of it or it will keep coming back. I’m seeing the same loser habits returning.

I hope I never see Erik Bedard in a Pirates’ uniform ever again.

  184. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Am I the only one now that won’t be upset if this team finishes up 82-80?

  185. Sorry, but yet another game where a long time scrub JUNK pitcher can be called up just in time to face our Bucs and shut them down at the same time. This team just does not fair well against these slow junk pitchers. No patience at the plate doesn’t help either. Hopefully they can wake the hell up over the last four innings and have one heck of a come back. Oh, and it’s now 10-5 in Cincy in the bottom of the 6th with 2 on base.

  186. The Gunner says:

Enough of this comedy – might as well put on Monday Night Raw, maybe Bob Backlund will be on it again tonight.

  187. Playoffs by 2012 says:

twentytwo22, why don’t you volunteer for the job. Why sit in this room when you could be snapping the team into shape? Seriously, get on a plane right now, I’m sure everyone in that locker room would love to hear your motivational speeches.

  188. Reading says:

I guess I’ll watch the 1972 U.S.-U.S.S.R. Gold Medal Basketball Game. Supposedly that Belov is a force on inbounds passes.

  189. Did we just trade to get Reed Johnson? He is shaking hands in the dugout.

  190. Playoffs by 2012 says:

twentytwo22, I love that you never respond to anyone on here. You just sit there and spew the same garbage night after night. Never talking to anyone in particular, just blah blah blah. Well it’s time to man up. Don’t be so shy. You have my full and undivided attention. Say hello.

  191. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Well, somebody just got Reed Johnson.

  192. Jandy says:

Can Clint call a team time out? Sheesh, these guys really need to get a grip. GI Jones just got sniped again…

  193. The Gunner says:

    @ Steve – 192

I hope we got Johnson. Is Resop going to cry like he did last year in Atlanta??

  194. Now we have seen the Bad News Bear moment of the game as the ball was rocketed off the first base bag and two more sorry runs score.11-freaking 2 now and they are still batting as a two run homer clears the fence for a 13-2 lead. Good Night all!!!

  195. RobertoForever says:

    Is 2222 really 24/7??

24/7 just tweeted that we should all just start paying attention to the Steelers.

Oh and is Chris Resop tanking it? Maybe he wants to start.

  196. Jandy says:

Well, hubby just turned the channel. lol…he can’t take it anymore…

  197. Reading says:

Resop not trying to show up Bedard. This will guarantee a Reds comeback win.

  198. Jandy says:

    Steve, sorry man :(

  207. bobhawaii says:

Wow! I can see the wheels falling off the bus the whole way from Honolulu. Ouch!

  208. Pig Legs Robinson says:

I doubt that the Pirates got Johnson. More likely is he went to the Dodgers in a possible Dempster deal, but you never know.

  209. Jandy says:

    Yup, Occifer, it’s a blow out :(

  210. Jandy says:

    Anyone seen buggee lately?

  211. Playoffs by 2012 says:

I wonder if Reds fans are panicking because they are losing tonight?

  212. Pardon me, but here we go again.

  213. Jandy says:

Playoffs, somehow I don’t think panic is the word for the Reds fans

  214. Jandy says:

    FORT!

  215. Jandy says:

YES! the little guy shows them how to do it…

  216. Playoffs by 2012 says:

They would still have to lose 14 more games after tonight JUST to be back at .500

    Don’t forget that.
    Like Frankie said…..RELAX!!

  217. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Aaaa, we can afford a loss tonight. It’s not gonna kill them. Maybe it will knock some sense into them.
Bruce Levine of ESPN Chicago reports Four teams made offers today for Reed Johnson including Pirates, Tigers.

  218. Jandy says:

It’s disheartening but not the end of the season…embarrassing too but oh well…maybe it will build intestinal fortitude

  219. TDB1977 says:

Now at bat – Casey “Double Play” McGeehee

  220. Eric Bowser says:

Forget this game as far as the win possibility but I want to see this team battle for the last four innings and better pitching than what they got from Bedard and Resop.

  221. You don’t suppose that this team has issues, do you? It’s a good team, but not good enough to have issues. Epic fail, year 2.

  222. DemonDachshund says:

Oh noez, our #5 starter might take a loss.

It’s going to be hard to make up this 10 run deficit tomorrow.

Wait, tomorrow’s game starts at 0-0 regardless of how this goes? Could’ve fooled me.

  223. RobertoForever says:

    @playoffs

Wouldn’t it be awesome if the Bucs could come back tonight! That would be like a reverse meals-game, huh.

    C’mon bats!

  224. Playoffs by 2012 says:

    Good call TDB1977

    [tip's my cap]

  225. Eric Bowser says:

McGehee is trying to pull everything right now and like clockwork, 6-4-3 double-play to end a promising 6th inning. The approach by McGehee and some others is just downright horrible.

Take the first pitch from an incoming reliever, make him throw a strike or get ‘your’ pitch.

  226. Playoffs by 2012 says:

    @Roberto

Yes it would. But even if they don’t. They will at worst be 14 games over .500 in late July. I’m not complaining.

  227. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Cubs put up 13 runs….then trade half their team.

  228. TDB1977 says:

Looks like Soto was traded also?

  229. Eric Bowser says:

I have the perfect plan, Cubs are trading players left and right.

Maybe the Pirates should bean the next few hitters and start a brawl,

  230. Boise Bucco says:

Looks like I missed a heck of a game…so is Bedard on the DL as of the 5th inning and did Correia just backdoor himself back into the rotation?

  231. Jandy says:

    Eric..sounds like a plan!

  232. JRay3 says:

Wow, at first I was upset with the game, left the BW3 here in Denver. But log onto the old blog and I am madder at the verbal assault tonight.

The team will be 10-7 post AS break after tonight, and 6-5 on the road and will have played 11 road games to 6 home games during this stretch.

The team will still be 14 games above .500.

The team will still be at minimum 2 games up for a playoff spot.

Hey 24/7 why don’t you quit being a comedian and actually report something, trade deadline tomorrow and you have not reported one scoop other than Correia is upset and asked to be traded, now that is a surprise thanks for the investigative reporting.

This is baseball all teams will have a bad game. anyone check the Reds score 11-5 Padres and the Reds are at HOME.

Now I will agree the Pirates need to make a move or two before 4:00 EST tomorrow. I think NH saw this team needed a top 3 in the rotation pitcher and went out and got one of the best LHP on the market. Let’s see what else he has in store.

Might get a break and not even face Dempster tomorrow, if the Cubs feel they are going to move him no way he pitches.

  233. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Mets had been discussing a deal for Soto earlier this week, if Soto is indeed not playing around with the hugs.
Everybody should hug everybody in every dugout. That would really freak out some reporters.

  234. JRay3 says:

And Marte right back up to hitting .318 with his third hit of the night.

  235. Eric Bowser says:

Nothing personal with the young man but I hope this is the final game for Alex Presley in a Pirates uniform. This team needs a real hitter in leadoff spot so Starling Marte can move down to 5th spot in the lineup.

  236. Playoffs by 2012 says:

    JRay, thank you……seriously, thank you.

  237. Jandy says:

    well said JRay :)

  238. JRay3 says:

Ken Rosenthal has tweeted both Soto and Reed traded to unknown teams. Reed can replace Presley and give Alex some ore time back in Indy and that would be an updgrade as Reed can get on base.

  239. Playoffs by 2012 says:

24/7 is reporting from the buffet as usual…….

  240. pattonbb says:

RB tweets it doesn’t look like Pirates got Reed

  241. Eric Bowser says:

GET Presley out of there, he’s AAA player.

  242. RobertoForever says:

    @Playoffs,

    Agreed, no complaining here either.

Half heard some state about the Pirates 2nd fewest games with more than 6 runs allowed. Cubs gave up 17 to the Mets a few weeks ago. It happens

  243. The Gunner says:

Presley looked like a real horse’s rear on Barney’s triple

  244. Reading says:

It seems to me that if the Cubs are ever in a big game again they ought to fire up a recording of Harry Caray doing the 7th inning Take Me Out to the Ballgame. That would get everybody going better than some celebrity.

  245. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Poor Marte. So much to learn. Glad he’s okay.

  246. Jandy says:

A lot of Buccos looked like donkey butts tonight…

  247. JRay3 says:

What 24/7 is at the game? I’m surprised he didn’t gripe about traffic and hit the restaurant across town.

  248. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Man I’d like to see Castro get some hugs tonight (and then walk to the other clubhouse).

  249. The Gunner says:

    @ Reading – 248

You are right, Gloria had trouble hitting the notes and she didn’t even know the right lyrics.

  250. Jandy says:

    JMac still looks shell shocked…

  251. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Getting to read DK as the beat reporter for so many years spoiled me and many others.

24/7 you are no DK and you never will be. Now go get your shine box.

  252. Jandy says:

I’m off to bed….4am comes much to soon. G’night and don’t give up the ship!

  253. Playoffs by 2012 says:

….and twentytwo22, still waiting to hear from you buddy. Don’t get all shy now. Say hello.

  254. DemonDachshund says:

Soto to the Rangers, say a few tweeters, Tim Brown of Yahoo the first that I see.

Haven’t seen any official word on Johnson yet.

  255. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Cincy getting clobbered in the 9th, no harm no foul in losing today.

  256. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Everybody is saying who Reed Johnson DIDN’T get traded to. Only team not reported on now is Tigers. Maybe they got him.

  257. DemonDachshund says:

And now, I’m off to watch some Game of Thrones.

Because as positive as I’m trying to be for the long term, this particular game is far more gruesome than that will be.

  258. Eric Bowser says:

I must be missing something here, who is 24/7?

  259. DemonDachshund says:

Morosi tweets that Maholm and Johnson appear to be headed to Atlanta.

  260. TDB1977 says:

    @Pig Legs

Jon Heyman is reporting that its not the Tigers per Twitter

  261. Reading says:

Getting beat by the Nats, Braves, Dodgers, Giants, a Reds is one thing. Getting sand kicked in our faces by the Cubs for the second week in a row is a cause for some concern and a potential red flag. Not to mention the less than stellar starting pitching against bottom dwellers lately. Hopefully, the concerns are ultimately unfounded, but these are not the early 70s Pirates that we grew up with.

  262. Eric Bowser says:

Maholm and Johnson traded to Braves according to Jon Morosi

  263. JRay3 says:

Soto went to Rangers for AA pitcher Jacob Brigham, 6th round pick in ’06 draft. Actually if the pitcher the Braves acquired is Maholm, not too upset with that, I know he has been hot but he could just as easily fade a bit down the stretch.

  264. pattonbb says:

That could be huge for the Braves. Wonder what they gave up?

  265. TDB1977 says:

Is Soranio traded also? He has been pulled from the game as well.

  266. Pig Legs Robinson says:

As one who’s been reading daily 1970′s Pittsburgh Press’s for a while now at google books, I can say that the 70′s Bucs got their butts whipped by last place teams plenty of times. There were some real ugly ones. I am appalled at some of the games in 1970 alone, the current year I am reading right now. They won their division still.

  267. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Johnson, Maholm and Soto NOT going to the Pirates

    Best news of the night!!

  268. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Oh, I hope we got Soriano! You mean nobody wants to hug Alfonso? Poor guy.

  269. Eric Bowser says:

Drew Sutton is not a second baseman, this team’s bench is a underwhelming

  270. Reading says:

Of course, the 71 Pirates got no hit. Wondering if the teams in 70 beating the Pirates were doing so while simultaneously dismantling. The early 70s Pirates I would guess had a few more veteran players than the current squad.

  271. Naje says:

24/7 is the moniker for Rob B., the PBC beat writer for the trib… whose work leaves much to be desired.

10-7 since the ASB isn’t bad, but the way they have played–the below average pitching, the lackluster at bats, the high strikeout rates, the baserunning flubs and the some shaky fielding–should cause concern.

The team is in flux… they’ve not handled the pressure very well against some teams where they should be more competitive, more ready to take advantage of the matchups.

They need an injection of leadership right now… from all levels. From management: a bat and an arm; from the coaches: getting the team back to basics; from the players: re-focusing and re-calibrating across the board so that pitching and defense get back to being solid and don’t allow cheap runs… and that the hitters work towards better approaches and better at bats.

  272. Naje says:

    PigLegs…
There were a lot less teams, and a lot more talent spread around the league in the ’70′s… yeah, good teams got beat

  273. Pig Legs Robinson says:

The 1970 Pirates actually were pretty young. Al Oliver & Bob Robertson were in their first year at an everyday position after platooning the year before, Hebner was real young, Sangy was in his 2nd or 3rd full year, and lots of injuries were hitting, with Blass & Clemente both out during early August where I’m at right now.
Maz wasn’t playing much, As young Dave Cash was getting most of the time. Cash had just returned stronger from 2 weeks in the Marines, something quite common in those days.
Gene Clines had been called up from double A just to pinch hit, and other odd names like rookie Johnny Jeter were getting playing time. The starting staff was in big trouble with Moose & Blass hurting, and young Jim Nelson was in the rotation.

  274. Eric Bowser says:

Not sure I agree with the assessment that Rob Biertempfel is a bad beat reporter based on the number of rumors “reported” by other national media members. There’s a whole lot more to being the beat reporter than tweeting or reporting about unconfirmed single sourced trade rumors.

  275. Naje says:

    Eric,
He’s just an incredibly average writer… nothing to get thrilled over, ever… not even when DK tries to tell us how fantastic a story he wrote… it’s like watching a game that Joe Morgan commentates: all he does is tell us what WE saw… what most of us already know… we’re talking about a work-a-day type of writer… nothing special at all… never read his game stories.

Spoiled, like so many here have mentioned recently and in the past, by DK’s incredible beat reporting.

  276. JRay3 says:

@ Eric – what beat writer tweets about how bad traffic is and he is surprised anybody goes to games and than decides to not show up to work because of it, instead opting to grab lunch somewhere and than takes photo of lunch spot.

In my profession the excuse traffic is bad I can’t make it in does not fly.

Tonight he should stick to reporting and not wise cracks, that usually is not in the job description, just my opinion.

  277. twentytwo22 says:

Worst loss of the season. That wasn’t Matt Garza, it was Justin Germano. They traded 3 guys during the game and won by 10. 8 straight games of s—– baseball. Is anyone mad? Is anyone going to do something about it?

You ain’t making the playoffs with the league leader in losses in your starting rotation. I know that.

  278. Eric Bowser says:

@Naje – We’ll agree to disagree about RB, though on same page about DK, no one is comparable in Pittsburgh and few if any stand against him in other media markets.

  279. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Twentytwo22, come on, I really want to talk to you. Don’t be so shy. Say hello to one of us on here. Or are you just typing to yourself?

  280. Naje says:

    EB…
Hockey, baseball… didn’t matter…DK head and shoulders above the competition. My point about RB is that there are more prescient and insightful comments HERE than anything i’ve ever read from him… you know the game and i know you know your hockey… and the sign of a good beat writer is at least a nugget or two every week in their work…just not getting that from RB… get it from a lot of posters here, though.

But DK did that while covering some of the worst teams in Pgh history (both the pens and bucs). Consistently came up with great stuff for his readers.

  281. JRay3 says:

@ twentytwo22 – I know this I have been happy 58 times this season, 44 times not so much. The team is playing at a pace to win 92 games, will that happen we will see over the course of the next 60 games.

Long season there are ups and downs and this team has provided way more ups. During the course of 162 there will be a best win and a worst loss just a fact of playing out a season.

  282. JRay3 says:

@ Playoffs – I am staying up until I see the updated posting, could I be the clubhouse leader again? Where is @ Ryan I told him I was not going away!

  283. Playoffs by 2012 says:

As the late great Harvey Korman said in Blazing Saddles, “Gentlemen rest your sphincters!” Still 14 games over .500, and still only 3 back of the Reds. Better yet, the Pirates have the 5th best record in all of baseball. Relax dammit. Chill. By the way the UNDER wins tonight. Thanks to all who played, and BIG THANKS to twentytwo22, every village needs it’s idiot.

Congrats to JRay3 on re-claiming the clubhouse leader position as the logjam increases at the top.
