No Dempster tonight unless he pitches for the Rangers.

UNDER for 4.5 hits+Walks for Snider

  10. DemonDachshund says:

100 on the UNDER for line 1 (Thinking that was meant as a multiplayer line, or a reward to play after going through the pain of the deadline today)
100 on the OVER for line 2.

  11. Playoffs by 2012 says:

    @jaxbuc and pattonbb,

I re-listed the line. Typo on my part. Sorry.

  12. DemonDachshund says:

    @Playoffs –

I will stay UNDER for line 1.

  13. diehard says:

The Cubs will be starting Castro, Barney, and the first 7 fans through the main gate.

  14. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Really? Snider one already? You suck (kidding of course)

    Line 1: 100 Under
    Line 2: 100 Over

Fingers crossed that its not a push, but also that its not a double whammy!!

  15. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    that’s awesome…………#13

  16. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Really? #YoureKillingMeSmalls

Change my Line 1 to 100 on the OVAH!!

  17. Playoffs by 2012 says:

  18. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Which post?

  19. JohninOshkosh says:

Just a reminder that game is on WGN America tonight.

  20. Jay Jax Fl via New Castle says:

Playoffs…….100 each on the over. Righting the ship tonight guys….

  21. Kevin says:

    Playoffs –

Line 1: 100 on the OVER, please. Thank you. Gonna order my Snider jersey now and pay with the proceeds from the Window!!

By the way, not sure I like giving up McGeehee.

  22. SlackBoss says:

@playoffs – 100 on the over for both Line #1 and Line #2

Will all of the players for both clubs be wearing name tags tonight?

I am really not sure that the trade deadline feeding frenzy makes a lot of sense from a team sport perspective.

  23. Stickyweb says:

To turn things around, I’m adopting the George Costanza philosophy and fake betting the exact opposite of what I would normally do. Therefore:

100 over on the new revised line 1
    100 under on line 2

  24. Mike C. says:

    Casey leaving left me sad

    @playoffs –
    #1 100 for UNDER
    #2 100 for UNDER
    thank you

  25. I feel for Casey – he now has to shave off the goatee.

  26. Kevin says:

Having said that (#21) I do believe the Buccos made some good moves while protecting their young players.

I just don’t think now is the right time to make the HUGE/BIG SPLASH/MEGA-DEAL (insert your own term here). They needed to bolster the current roster – and did. We knew “someone” would have to go – Lincoln, Owens, McGeehee; all tough losses but nothing devastating to this club.

That’s all I will say about that…for now.

  27. Kevin says:

I HAVE ADOPTED THE SAME STRATEGY!!! Now sitting at EVEN (down as far as -450 at one point)…and as Playoffs said to me…SERENITY NOW!!

  28. cosmo says:

the world must be coming to an end. The Pirates are also sending 250 thousand to the Yankees in the Mcgehe deal. The Pirates sending cash to the Yankees.
    Somebody pinch me I’m dreaming.

  29. stuart66 says:

give me 100 kopeks on the under for #1, and 50 ks on the over for #2.

I would have batted Snider 5th and PRNW second, where he seems to do best. I like what we did especially because I tired of seeing Casey and Gorkys in the lineup.

    Stuart 66

  30. bman says:

Line 1: 30 on the OVER
Line 2: 70 on the UNDER

  31. @Playoffs, Let me have 100 on the UNDER for Line #1 and 100 on the OVER for Line #2. Thanks.

  32. Kevin says:

Could someone tell me what PR is before NW? Apologize for the ignorance…

  33. cosmo says:

    @ Kevin and Stickeyweb

good luck on tonites lines and may you have a Happy “Festivus”

  34. LuckyNKentucky says:

You’ve been traded to the Twins for 2223 and cash for that error. Just kidding. We want to extend you, but Neal sent a quarter of a mil. to the Yanks to take Casey. Your raise will come later when we raise payroll due to increased attendance. Oh wait……..

  35. stuart66 says:

    stickey et al

Be not afraid. I too started way in the hole and have worked my way up the ladder. I haven’t yet sent in my hat size, but I’m feeling a lot better. PS dont forget the first commandment of sports cliches “Play them one at a time”.

  36. pants-n-at says:

Ok…I whined all day on the previous blog. But I’m still behind my Buccos! Thanks McGehee for your contributions…..classy guy.

Now let’s go win a pennant!

Give me 100 on the over for line 1
100 on the over for line 2

  37. cosmo says:

    @ Playoffs

    line 1 – 100 on the under
    line 2 – 100 on the over

  38. pants-n-at says:

Hurdle needs to return yesterday’s crappy birthday present!

  39. Kevin says:

If I get to the plus side tonight it’s time for the “feats of strength”!!!

  40. stuart66 says:

Neil is from Pine Richland High School so PRNW simply signify’s Pine Richland’s Neil Walker.

  41. pants-n-at says:

@ Kevin. Here’s a hint. Where did he go to High School?

  42. Kevin says:

    OOOOhhhhhhhh…got it! Thanks!

  43. Kevin says:

Just listened to Lincoln’s radio interview from 93.7 – what an unbelievable, classy guy.

  44. pattonbb says:

    Playoffs –

I’ll stick with my original wagers.

    Line 1 – 100 UNDER
    Line 2 – 100 OVER

  45. Curt says:

100 on the UNDER for BOTH

I like the moves we made today. MLB Network has praised the Pirates on grabbing Snider and Sanchez at a discount price.

I feel like if both produce at a consistent level/pace it is way better than what we had, plus we kept our young arms!

    Let’s Go Bucs!

  46. Bizrow says:

Although I am sorely disappointed with today’s take

100 sobbing nuclear nuggets on the OVAH for both lines

    As always

    and thanks Playoffs per usual

  47. JRay3 says:

@ Playoffs – Wow out in field all day with work and miss all the excitement. As for the lines:

    Line 1 : 50 on the OVER

Line 2: 100 on the OVER

Have to say people ripping on Gaby Sanchez and I do not get it. He was 4th in rookie of the year voting two years ago. Had 572 AB’s two straight seasons and is durable, OBP of .341 and .352 and two 19 HR seasons to his credit. We gave up all defense no bat Gorkys, great deal and an upgrade over McGehee. Snider far greater upside than Alex Presely and gave up a position of strength in Lincoln. Wandy Rodriguez was a HUGE upgrade to the rotation (how many teams tried to add a top SP and could not get it done?) And who cares about Qualls if he does not pitch well he will get DFA’d and helped get rid of the log jam created with Snider and Sanchez to were able to cut ties with McGehee.

The Reds big move was to add Jonathan Broxton, the Cardinals big move….was there one? LA made a splash but huge market, SF gets Pence at too steep of price for production and pay and the Braves end up with Maholm nothing big.

Great chance to even the series tonight, Let’s Go Bucs.

  48. Thundercrack says:

I am not a big fan of G. Jones’ defense at first base. I wonder if it will hurt us throughout the remainder of the season.

But I can look past it if he hits more home runs

  49. Bizrow says:

    We bought lottery tickets today

    Just sayin

Being this close to a real pennant race

  50. cmat0829 says:

Let’s go OVER on both lines, 100 FUs, por favor.

Time to wash yesterday’s ugly taste out with a raucous win at Wrigley…thinking 3 HR barrage… who gets? Snider, Pedro and Barmes.

  51. radio wave says:

    At playoffs:
30 on the over line 1

75 on the over line 2.

  52. Scrap Iron Garner says:

No matter if one likes the trades or not…the Pirates are buyers in a pennant race for the first time in 19 stinking years!!!!

  53. DemonDachshund says:

    @JRay3 –

Pretty much every complaint I’ve seen about Sanchez boils down to this:

Typically, contending teams do not look to the AAA players of non-contending teams to improve themselves at the trade deadline.

He has struggled, badly, at the MLB level this year. Can he turn it around? Is he a good long term investment? I say yes to both points.

Is he a good option for THIS YEAR? Will he help us THIS YEAR? That is very much in question. And when both hitters acquired today fall into this category, that disappoints me greatly.

  54. DemonDachshund says:

Hurdle’s quote that 24/7 posted on Sulia basically reads to me as, “We decided today that we aren’t trying to contend this year.”

  55. crkkid says:

    @ playoffs

Let me have 75 units on the over for #1 and 100 units on the over for #2.

  56. NMR says:

Every team bought lottery tickets today. Show me a sure bet and I’ll show you a million dollars.

*Note: not currently in possesion of $999,984 out of $1,000,000

  57. tmp444 says:

    50 OVER for line 1
    100 OVER for line 2.

    Thanks as always!

  58. Bizrow says:

    Keep whistlin past the graveyard

Our chance at the NL Central lies with two AAA guys and a guy that has played a week in the majors and as Dejan tweeted, these chances don’t come that often

And obviously our boy Neal wedgied Toronto’s GM, not to mention the Marlins while giving up the 33rd-35th pick next year and 1.5 million in spending money

    We’ll see

Some other clubs went pretty much all in

  59. JRay3 says:

@ DemonDaschund – I get it that some maybe disappointed we did not pony up for a Victorino or Pence for two months of baseball. But Sanchez has been an All-Star, and has two very solid seasons of MLB production, yes this has been a bad year and he fell out of favor with Ozzie Guillen but is that so hard to do? The Marlins have no idea who they are or want to be, new stadium, wacky coach a lot of things could have helped contribute to that.

I just view the trades as Snider is a lot better than Presley, Sanchez is a better bench piece, platoon player than McGehee and Wandy Rodriguez ended up being one of the top pitchers moved at the deadline and was much needed given the cracks in the rotation that have popped up. If either one of Snider or Sanchez lives up to their scouting reports from just couple years ago this turns into a steal.

The other teams in our division did nothing hardly so although the Bucs were not “splashy” I take the position we slightly improved a team that is 3 back in the division and 3 up in the WC with the exception of the bullpen which NH does deserve some credit for being able to put together.

We were one of the most active teams, the Dbacks tried could not get anything done, the A’s, Rays, Orioles, and many in the AL race did not get much done, some teams like the Twins and Padres did not sell anything, given the market and seeing what actually took place today I don’t think we did great but I certainly do not feel the team did bad.

  61. Thundercrack says:

“Our chance at the NL Central lies with two AAA guys and a guy that has played a week in the majors and as Dejan tweeted, these chances don’t come that often”

Biz, those are the guys we picked up. Those two don’t constitute our entire chance at the NL Central. Don’t the players already on the squad factor into this? (Plus I think the Reds and Cardinals will have a say as to who will win too).

And Dejan’s tweeted opinion that these chances don’t come that often isn’t exactly original or earth shattering. We know.

  62. Chico says:

    Line 1: 50 under
    Line 2: 100 over

  63. JRay3 says:

Funny thing to me is go over and read the Blue Jays blog and they are up in arms for giving up Snider for a relief pitcher. Maybe all fans just like to assume their team got hosed.

  64. DemonDachshund says:

    @JRay3 –

And Casey McGehee was great for 2 years for the Brewers and then fell apart.

Make either of those trades in the offseason or even in May (ya know, when I wanted to see a deal like this happen, especially the Snider one) and it’s a great deal.

I’m convinced that the Pirates FO just threw in the towel for this year. Let’s hope the players make a cardboard cutoff of Gollum and peel pieces off of it for the rest of the year.

  65. NMR says:

Easy, Biz. The sun will come up tomorrow. How dare I not wallow in my own teams pity?

Nobody “pretty much” went all in.

And people throw around the “there will never be an easier time to win the division” line constantly. I can’t count the number of times I’ve heard that phrase uttered in my lifetime. If you haven’t noticed, there happens to be a team in Cincinatti thats on pace for 97 wins with an easy schedule remaining. Please, explain to me how that is any easy division to win or for that matter, how the Cubs being bad changes things at all?

When out of arguments, just say the NL Central is weak. Just like last year.

  66. LuckyNKentucky says:

You make good sense, as usual. Hope you’re right over the long haul.

  67. LuckyNKentucky says:

The next time you’re talking to ballplayers on Twitter, please tell Gaby it’s gold and not yellow. Grilli made that mistake last year, but he’s more than made up for it.

  68. JRay3 says:

The top four SP that were dealt at the deadline were – Dempster, Greinke, Rodriguez, Maholm. Where does Wandy rate? I could make an argument for the second best SP amongst the four, some might say third but one of the big ones to be moved and the Bucs landed him….pitching does win championships they say.

The top bats to go today were Victorino, Pence. Yes there were the likes of guys like Soto, Thames, the Johnsons – Reed and Chris, but not all that many splashy names out there.

Top Reliever that were dealt – Broxton, Breslow and Brandon League absolutely nothing in that market.

I ask outside of the LA Dodgers (the two AL West teams Rangers and Angels each added a very good SP) who in baseball SIGNIFICANTLY improved their team?

  69. JohninOshkosh says:

Cubs starting 9 per Cubs MLB beat reporter Carrie Muskat:

#Cubs lineup vs. @Pirates 7/31: DeJesus CF, Castro SS, Rizzo 1B, Soriano LF, LaHair RF, Clevenger C, Barney 2B, Valbuena 3B, Coleman P

  70. Boise Bucco says:

Call me crazy, but I am really, really, really stoked about Gaby Sanchez.

I don’t know why, but something just tells me that for all the players that Miami trades away, they’re all going to succeed for other clubs. The place just reeks of toxic right now. Can’t quite put my finger on it, but there’s gotta be something. But I just look at what happened to Heath Bell–the dude took over for Trevor Hoffman; he’s pretty used to pressure–he’s failing all over the place. Their entire roster has underachieved this year. I haven’t watched any more Marlins games than I’ve been forced to watch, but there’s gotta be something.

    Just my .02.

  71. JRay3 says:

@ JohninOshkosh – Let’s hope this is a lineup that AJ can just mow down tonight and get the team settled back in.

  72. Mike C. says:

    very good points

one could argue, Pittsburgh was the 4th most improved team in all of MLB.
(SF or Atlanta might have an argument as well)

  73. Bizrow says:

@TC – those guys have to produce, and yes, the key is the starters. As you know, I would have been ok with sticking with what we had.

Snider and Sanchez are so far under achievers, and as such, we will see. I’m pulling for them all

As far as saying what Dejan said, OK, guilty, I like the guy, I like his writing

@NMR – each to their own, we will see how the club responds and how much real improvement we have

And disagree, some teams went all in

I hope I am wrong, but I’m sure either you will spin things one way, or remind me, I will gladly take the latter

How much do they pay folks to blog, btw?

  74. OZ says:

    Line 1 Under 100
    Line 2 Over 100

    Thx window.

  75. twentytwo22 says:

No matter what happens tonight what we have to keep in mind is that these guys are getting valuable experience for when we compete in 2014 with two rookies in our starting rota… 2016 after we trade Andrew McCutchen and Neil Walker and those rookies are in our line….. 2018. No matter what happens tonight, keep in mind that this team will win in 2018.

  76. DemonDachshund says:

It is kind of interesting how some of the people who were arguing not to bring Marte up because that’s not what a contending team does in a pennant race…

Are the same people who are now defending trading for other teams’ AAA players who have recently failed at the MLB level and putting them into a playoff race.

    Just sayin’.

  77. Mlrgenuine says:

    Line#1 – 100 on the OVER
    Line#2 – 100 on the OVER

    Lets Go Bucs!

  78. Eric Bowser says:

    1) Wandy Rodrigeuz for Grossman, Owens, and Cain = acquire #2/3 starter = good
    2) Travis Snider for Lincoln = starting RF that is more of a project than 2012 help
    3) Gabby Sanchez & Kyle Kaminska for Hernandez & draft pick = improved bench
    4) Chad Qualls for McGehee & cash = horrible, better options in minors = wasted $

The Pirates improved their starting rotation and improved their depth chart at 1B and OF but I don’t think the team found that guy who is going to push this team further than it was already going.

Really need Jose Tabata to get mentally focused and start killing the ball the other way and play good defense. I really don’t want to see Sanchez, Harrison or Presley in the outfield giving Marte or Snider a day off.

Let’s hope Huntington made the right moves this year.

  79. Thundercrack says:

I like his writing too, but I just don’t always agree with him.

And I’m sorry if it seemed I was ‘jumping’ you. I wasn’t.

I guess I am a bit fatigued with all the talk about what we need to add at the deadline and we need to go all in, and NH has to do this or that.

I still have my reservations as to whether this team is good enough for the playoffs – no matter who they added. And I am one who loves this season, but also seems to realize that they’re going to have to field a team next year and in 2014.

Plus if Cutch goes on to hit .220 or Pedro doesn’t hit another home run the rest of the way, I just don’t think a player like Pence or Victorino is good enough to pick up the slack. All of our players have to perform, just not guys we pick up before the deadline.

  80. manny _sanguine says:

    Line 1 – 100 on the OVER
    Line 2 – 100 on the OVER

  81. NMR says:

Look at the names JRay listed. Now name the “teams” that went all in.

And are you honestly claiming I work for the PBC?

Get a hold of yourself, dude. Grow up.

  82. NMR says:

If you don’t agree with someone that doesn’t like something the Front Office does, you’re a hired plant.

If you don’t agree with someone that likes something the Front Office does, you’re a simple minded idiot who doesn’t know baseball.

Yep. Sounds like the blog, alright.

  83. Bizrow says:

No problem TC, both of our hearts are in the right place, and always will be, I know that now, PBC fanatics

@DD, no Marte wasn’t brought up because “it would diminish his trade value”

    We got what we got

    Lets see what happens

Hope but expect, I always say

  84. NMR says:

You leave out the fact that there was a market at play. Teams do not operate in a vaccuum.

I was one that would’ve rather seen a veteran like Choo, Victorino, or Dejesus over Marte for the reason you listed above.

Victorino is the only one that moved and his price was Brad Lincoln. I’m far from the only one who was against that trade.

With the preferred options not available or too expensive, I applauded Huntington for thinking unconventionally. For improving this team and possibly future ones without getting forced into overpaying.

Why does every single issue on this blog have to be divided to the extremes?

  85. Bizrow says:

No comment, thou doest protest too much

    About everything

Yeah, I wouldn’t be surprised if you aren’t getting your palms greased by someone

    Just sayin

  86. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Good work buddy, way to put all of it into prosective.

the difference is, the teams like the Dodgers, Giants (one guy), Angels, and Rangers all got known high priced commodities and the Buccos went their usual inexpensive routes.

I like the trades, don’t get me wrong……but I think that’s what all the hub-bub is about.

  87. JRay3 says:

@ Ryan – thanks…listen at some point we have to come to the realization we are not the LA Dodgers or Angels…they are even talking about how the Rangers would not trade their top position prospects because they will not be able to pay all their position players in two years and they are a bigger market team than Pittsburgh.

I take a look at what we did compared to the Reds and Cardinals the two teams we are competing with and I think we did more and improved a bit more than those clubs. The Reds desperately wanted a Denard Span, Juan Pierre, or Victorino and could not get it done. It was a tough market and we can not afford to over pay.

We gave up 3 top 20 prospects in our system to get Wandy which is the price for a top SP. At the risk of not upsetting @ Milo we get to keep Wandy another year or two which also gives Cole and Tallion the time needed to further develop. I will take Snider over Victorino when I look at the “whole” for a Lincoln. Just me and my opinion.

  88. JRay3 says:

@ twentytwo22- # 75….I just have to say boy you have missed an exciting 102 games of the 2012 season…the Bucs are in contention, playing winning baseball, competing for both a division and a wild card playoff spot and you would not believe it 14 games above the .500 mark.

I hope the 2014 team plays as well as the 2012 team is playing this year, it will be another fun ride!

  89. NMR says:

I’m counting up the times Biz has any opinion other than repeating exactly what Dejan says. Still got all my fingers and toes to spare.

  90. Mike C. says:

    again good point.
Pittsburgh does seem like the most improved team in the NLC

    will it be enough?
that we’ll have to see, but i’m guessing it’ll be a fun ride whatever happens

  91. RobertoForever says:

Just started following him. Will let him know. I am sure the Wiz Khalifa song confuses many athletes.

Btw, Snider spelled Pittsburgh wrong on his first tweet and Grilli already tweeted that he will take him under his wing and get him strsightend out, lol. Snider apologized shortly thereafter.

  92. RobertoForever says:

Everyone makes mistakes. I forgive you.

And with the Cubs bullpen decimated from last night and who knows who will pitch in Dempsters place. So if Marte can go 2 for 3 in his Bucs debut, so can Snider. 75 units on the OVER.

And AJ is going to assert his alpha dominance to the herd and show these guys how they need to pitch here on out. So lets go 100 units OVER

    Beat em Bucs!

  93. Bizrow says:

We need AJ to be an ace tonight

    Is it gametime yet?

  94. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Well I for one am terribly disappointed by the trades today. Just look at the names that were available that Neal didn’t pull the trigger on:

    Jeromy Burnitz
    Jose Hernandez
    Ceasar Izturis
    Matt Morris
    Shawn Chacon
    Yoslan Herrera
    Tony Armas, Jr.
    Jason Michaels
    Darren Lewis
    Armando Rios
    Bobby Hill

All of them were available and could have helped. Why didn’t Neal Huntington target them?

  95. TDB1977 says:

    @Playoffs No. 94

You forgot to add Aki Imowara on the list.

  96. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    LOL Roberto

He was corrected quickly by someone on this blog……….no mentioning any names or pointing any fingers.

  97. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Twentytwo22 still haven’t said hello to anyone on here. Just blithering away as usual.

DK, in all seriousness I think it’s time to give twentytwo22 the boot from here, or at the very least a vacation from here for a few weeks. They bring nothing to the conversation, and they are bringing the entire blog down. I’m asking you to please intervene here as you have on many other occasions. I know there are numerous others who feel the same way. Thank you in advance.

  98. @93, you’re right. A 3’rd straight blowout could wreck the mental health of every Pirates fan over 40, ballooning the federal deficit, leading to a cascade of catastrophic consequences. In other news, the argument for today’s trades must depend heavily on NH’s proprietary player rankings. Time will
tell whether or not this GM has the capability of evaluating trades for players already in the majors…and whether Hurdle can keep a disappointed clubhouse from going all petulant.

    Go Bucs! Go AJ!

  99. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Well, I like all the changes. Considering what they gave up, they did quite well.
I never thought a young power hitter like Travis Snider would even be available, and neither did most other people. Apparently Toronto fans are just as shocked and more than a little upset.

He’s a gamer, a hard-nosed player and a good clubhouse guy, well-liked by his teamates. Will run through a wall for you.
Also BB America waxed on about his leadership abilities. This I get from my 2009 prospect almanac, which he was on the cover of, and the number one Toronto prospect for 2 straight years. He has since been pretty rushed to the majors, and never spent a full season in any of the levels except for his first level.

Current Pittsburgh sentiments remind me of all the comments after the Bucs traded Ricardo Rincon for Brian Giles. I wonder where all those angry folks went? Never really heard from them again.

  100. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Damn DK throwing down the AXE…

That’s gotta suck…….I don’t want to be on that list…..

    but ya, 22 must go!!

  101. cmat0829 says:

Did anyone see the tweet that Snider sent out? Something to the effect that he can’t wait to “play hard every day for Pittsburgh” and he’s excited to be part of the race.

  102. TDB1977 says:

I’m surprised NBC didn’t force the MLB trade deadline to occur on a 6 hour tape delay.

  103. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I saw it, as soon as he was traded, someone posted his twitter account. Seems like a hard-nosed Pittsburgh type of guy actually.

  104. Bizrow says:

I don’t remember too much of anyone dissing the FO for the Rincon/Giles trade, nor do I remember too much dissing of the Giles/Bay trade

The club was wallowing in the dumpster then, record wise, and I think the Rincon trade was during the off season

There were no blogs that I know of back then though

I do however, have another nominee for a time out

  105. Bizrow says:

    Not you PLR, BTW

  106. DemonDachshund says:

    @NMR –

You leave out the part that the market is negotiated by Gollum. If he couldn’t find a better or an acceptable offer, that’s at least partially on him. The Dodgers got Victorino for “nothing that they’ll miss”, I believe it was put on the other post. I know Lincoln was rumored to be asked for at some point, but I have no idea if they could have been talked out of that.

I get your point that it’s hard to be critical of Gollum without knowing what offers were on the table. At the same time, I would say we sent him to market to buy the pieces to get us to October, and he came back with “magic” beans. A salesman is paid to make sales. A GM is paid to build a team.

I still have no idea what extremes you’re referring to, or how you can applaud Gollum for his “creative” solution of putting 3 AAA players into the starting lineup when you didn’t want one there. We’ll just have to disagree on that.

  107. Eric Bowser says:

infield single to 3B for Travis Snider… the good is a single and he worked the count

  108. Eric Bowser says:

another seeing eye single, this time McCutchen up the middle to Castro.

  109. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

This game really should be a blow out…I expect the pitcher to have the advantage in the beginning……..but the Bucco bats will come alive.

  110. RobertoForever says:

Lol, who is your arrow pointing to? Yourself? Maybe my mobile access to blog causes it to lose something in translation, lol.

  111. Eric Bowser says:

    Grand SLAM by Walker…. YES!!

  112. Pig Legs Robinson says:

    Granny Time!

  113. Way to go Walker!!! 4-0 Good guys on that slam.

  114. Mike C. says:

  115. TDB1977 says:

Granny time!!!! If memory serves me right, didn’t Walker hit another Granny against the Cubs at Wrigley, last year?

  116. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

  117. cosmo says:

    grand salami

  118. Eric Bowser says:

now Pedro lines double to LF, really nice

  119. TDB1977 says:

Some run support for Burnett too. I’ll take that. Lets go Bucs!

  120. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Yes, yes it was pointed to me.

  121. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

this dude ain’t gonna last that long……….

  122. DemonDachshund says:

At least we should get one win out of the trade deadline moves…

  123. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Actually A.J is the one pitcher on the staff who can get by with little run support. They should have done this when the other starters were pitching, but that’s baseball.

  124. DemonDachshund says:

Twentytwo22 would be ranting about that Barajas strikeout.

    Enjoying the silence.

  125. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

  126. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

What? Barmes is terrible……bringing…….OK, I’ll stop.

  127. Drew71 says:

    Wandy was a serious acquisition.

The rest? Whatever. Not saying BAD trades. Just not seeing much help for this year. Or much hurt. Just Whatever.

I don’t get too excited or angry about Whatever.

That’s why we call it Whatever.

    As in, you know, whatever.

  128. DemonDachshund says:

Whatever. :) (Deliberate use of smiley)

  129. RobertoForever says:

Wow, if the clubhouse is indeed ‘petulant’ then maybe ‘Gollum’ (who insults the FO of their favorite team like that, in the middle of a penant race?) Needs to make them petulant every day.

4-0 good guys. And that Triple-A’er acquired last night started the rally with a great AB resulting in a single!

AJ staked to a lead. Mow em down Burnett, you washed up old bucket of bones, lol.

  130. @127 Drew, your opinion is premature! (:@)

  131. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Bizrow – Back then they werent called blogs, just ‘message boards’ & ‘newsgroups’. People were as mean and ornery then as they are now, though.

  132. Drew71 says:

And nothing would please me more than a three run shot in the ninth to provide the winning margin. By Travis Whatever.

  133. Drew71 says:

    I’m meaner than that, Pigsie.

  134. Whoa, Bucs 4 Cubs 0 and I have local TV!

  135. Drew71 says:

Thanks Officer. Now I have to clean up. Thanks for that.

  136. Eric Bowser says:

UGH. Marte hits one to deep left-center and wind kills it.

  137. DemonDachshund says:

    @Roberto –

Fairly certain that Gollum doesn’t care what I call him.

  138. Drew71 says:

Going out with my son; will miss the game.

Thank heavens for NBC. I’ll catch the tape delay in six hours.

  139. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Also, I’m the only person right now where I work who liked the Snider deal, and I wasn’t shy about it. I say it may be Huntington’s best deal ever.

I was also the only one where I worked who like getting Giles. Nobody really knew who he was, but in my fantasy league at the time, I already owned him the year previous. Rincon had a low era that year and local folks I talked with thought he was irreplacable. (I believe he went on to quickly blow out his arm).

  140. cosmo says:

    SD 6- CIN 6 4th inning.

  141. TDB1977 says:

AJ is not being that efficient tonight to getting batters out. He needed 9 in the first and 10 in the second. Come one AJ, just use 3 pitches next inning! *Sarcasm*

  142. Mike Shigley says:

Very nice outing tonight for Gerrit Cole. Through 6, no runs, 6 strikeouts, 3 hits, 1 walk, and 53 of 82 pitches for strikes. Altoona now batting top 7th. That goes with the outstanding outing (7 shutout innings) last night for Taillon and an ok outing for Heredia (more wild now, with a hits batsman and 2 walks to go with 3 strikeouts and pulled with one out in 4th).

  143. I feel more confident with AJ leading after 2 than I
would feel with slow K Bedard.

  144. Drew71 says:

    PS…Hate these BBC broadcasts.

    Can’t understand a word they’re saying.

  145. Eric Bowser says:

Why was Jones at 3B on THAT??

  146. Pathetic baserunning.

  147. JD says:

NMR – just post a city for Biz. Then he’ll love you because he can update his annoying list again.

  148. Pig Legs Robinson says:

They need to do this every so often to get Hurdle & the coaches to teach them how to run the bases.

  149. scapper says:

Hey Garret, remember Little League training? Halfway to third…if ball drops OVER outfielders head, you can pretty much jog home. What a window-licker move that was.

  150. Pig Legs Robinson says:

A Barmes grand slam would calm things down quickly…hey, a guy can dream.

  151. Eric Bowser says:

When Jones isn’t hitting the ball, he’s pretty much useless.

    Bad defense, bad runner…

  152. The Gunner says:

Is Frank Oceak back coaching 3rd base for the Bucs or what??

  153. scapper says:

Wow. Five different men on base and no runs. Keep it up AJ.

  154. The Gunner says:

    Nice going, Barmes

  155. Pig Legs Robinson says:

I think Hurdle assumed that with Tabata off the team the base running would be fine.

  156. JaxBuc says:

Just got back from my son’s YMCA basketball game. I guess you should just throw out my initial wager made on the incorrect line. Now I need to check on the game on

  157. With Bedard you get sterling stats through x innings, but disaster is one hitter away

  158. The Gunner says:

Motormouth Huntington will be on the telecast after the commercials.

  159. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

4-0 is an awesome lead……..should do it, to be honest.

  160. I saved that AJ fist pump pic to my phone a few weeks ago. Might have to view it.

  161. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I haven’t caught many of the games, but has Starling showed off his arm yet?

  162. Pig Legs Robinson says:

We still need a pitcher to get an extra base hit this season. There’s a good thing for betting on. When will the first come? By who?
Could be anybody. Longtime Pirate fans may still remember reliever Enrique Romo hitting a grand slam.

  163. Jay Jax Fl via New Castle says:

All of the old school Bucs could hit. Ban the DH…….Why do we have Dh’s in the minors when we play an NL farm team???………Anyone????…Let them bat, play real baseball..

  164. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

They play AL farm teams……probably agreed on so that the pitching studs dont get hurt

  165. The Gunner says:

NH is pretty predictable with his answers to Brownie’s dumb questions. Of course he is going to say he improved the team.

And, the ol’ Gunner thinks he did just fine. Hopefully, the starting pitchers get back on track.

  166. TDB1977 says:

Make the walk’s count this inning and put up another big number. Its all you Rod. You can do it.

  167. twentytwo22 says:

F this offense. AAA guy still pitching in the 5th after 4 in the first. Loop another swing with the wind blowing in boys. You clueless scabs.

  168. JohninOshkosh says:

Very early but last time Cubs were no hit was, famously, by Sandy Koufax on September 9, 1965. Longest streak of avoiding a no no in MLB.

  169. JD says:

I’m not watching tonight. How did Pedro end up with a 400 ft single earlier with no RBI?

    Playoffs – yes, 22 is a jack@ff and a tool.

  170. DemonDachshund says:

    @JD –

Runners at 1st and 2nd, ball driven to the wall in deep CF, just over the CF’s head. Jones stopped at 3rd for who knows what reason, leaving Walker in a rundown and Pedro with a single.

  171. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Yeah, there were some decent hitting pitchers before the DH. I still am amazed at how good Bob Gibson was. He was a true ninth hitter in the line-up. In 1970 he hit .303 with 19 RBI. He twice hit 5 homers in a season, and had 24 for his career.

Best hitting post-DH Pirates pitchers that I remember off the top of my head were Kenny Brett (he was the best), Rick Rhoden, & Tim Wakefield. Reliever Terry Forster could hit too.

  172. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Just jinxed it…

  173. JD says:

Thanks DD. GI Jones should just stick to hitting homers.

  174. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I know with 22 its easiest to ignore, but I find his ignorant comments hilarious.

Just another yinzer that has no clue…….

  175. pattonbb says:

I agree with you Ryan. I look forward to the comic relief every night.

  176. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Though I thought he was kicked out??!!

Needs to be, or its past his bedtime.

  177. JohninOshkosh says:

I think that jinx rule only applies to players. :)

  178. Jay Jax Fl via New Castle says:

    Pig Legs…..Don’t forget Don Robinson…..

  179. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Nope……….can’t talk about John…….

  180. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

AJ does need some more K’s.

  181. JohninOshkosh says:

If my actions have these kind of powers, then I ought to have done better with the ladies when I was younger.

  182. Bizrow says:

I wish we could add a few more runs.

AJ is being an ACE tonight

    So far

We’ll see what NMR posts once school starts again

    Just sayin

My vote is 2222 takes a nap

  183. scapper says:

Pig Legs….Big yes on Rick Rhoden. Was at a game and saw him hit two dingers in one day. Think it was a Labor Day DH. Might have even had a third hit. Pitch…hit…golf…great athlete.

  184. RobertoForever says:

Not really following the blog tonight. Enjoying George Thorogood in downtown Pittsburgh.

But I see AJ is dominating.

Oh and George shouted to the crowd, ‘how does it feel to be in a pennant race, Pittsburgh’ – crowd went wild. When was the last time a touring group could yell THAT, lol.

    Mow em down, AJ

  185. Jay Jax Fl via New Castle says:

Wasn’t Thorogood in the minor leagues?????,,,,,I believe so…

  186. scapper says:

RobertoForever…to answer your question, I think it was probably Guns N Roses.

And tool that I am, just checked on the Rhoden thing. Only homer for Rhoden…and a double. In another ten years. I’ll have him hitting three homers and a triple.

  187. Boise Bucco says:

I think next year they need Garrit Cole to go ahead and just move in with AJ Burnett, like how Crosby lived with Lemieux and Malkin lived with Gonchar for a while.

    It really can’t hurt.

  188. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Good call. I think Cole will be in the bigs next year………June/July time frame.

  189. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

People still listen to George Thorogood?

  190. JohninOshkosh says:

    At free concerts, they do.

  191. Bizrow says:

Thorogood Marshall was a member of the Supreme Court

    I didn’t follow him….

    We need some runs

  192. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

And line 1 goes to the OVER on Snider’s walk.

    Come on AJ

  193. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

This is the time you start whispering the……….thing we’re not supposed to talk about with a pitcher.

  194. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Yeah, Robby could hit too. Rhoden was a good all-around athlete and I believe he recovered from polio as a child and had a bad leg because of it. Good guy, Rhoden.

I was thinking about Geddy Lee of the rock band Rush tonight, because he’s big Bluejays fan. You can see him in the crowd at their games often. I bet he’s miffed like the rest of their fans after trading a talented young hitter for just one reliever.

  195. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Jones with runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs!

  196. Bizrow says:

I think Rick Rhoden has made a ton of moolah on the golf tour?

  197. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I mean, NW with runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out

  198. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    3 hits for Cutch already??

    Glad he’s a Bucco

  199. Jay Jax Fl via New Castle says:

    Should be an E2

  200. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    5-0 Bucs!!!

  201. JohninOshkosh says:

    Just for fun:

Is there any player in the league any of you would trade Cutch for? Fielder? Verlander? Anybody?

  202. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Fielder and Verlander

  203. The Gunner says:

    @ Pig Legs

Other Pirate pitchers who had a good bat were Vern Law, Harvey Haddix and even Steve Blass had a good bat. They also had a lefty relief pitcher in 1960 named Fred Green – he went something like 2 for 3 for the season and both of his hits were HRs at Forbes Field over the 406 ft. mark in LF.

  204. DemonDachshund says:

Reds win 7-6, 3.5 back for the moment.

    Don’t shoot the messenger please.

  205. Pig Legs Robinson says:

One thing I’ve committed to my memory for the future is that Pedro Alvarez could easily have 30 homers right now, as most of his doubles and even some of his singles were inches from being home runs. Any young guy that does that is almost a lock for a couple of 40 homer years in his future.

  206. JohninOshkosh says:

I think Trout and Verlander. Maybe Harper? But not Fielder. Great player but I just don’t like him. Familiarity breeds contempt, I suppose.

  207. Boise Bucco says:

I’m even trying to think of past guys I’d trade Cutch for…

Assuming they were even allowed to take steroids:
Bonds: nope, couldn’t root for him
McGwire: nope, got hurt too much
Sosa: maybe, but he was a Scrubbie and I really dislike Cubs. It was even hard to like Maholm this year.

I really can’t think of anyone current. Maybe Pujols, but we’re talking like, 26 year old Cutch for 26 year old Pujols.

  208. The Gunner says:

    @ Pig Legs – 206

Pedro is something special – he will be a star. He hits the ball like Stargell & McCovey.

  209. JMB says:

I have Trout & Cutch on my fantasy team and they are 1) T and 2) C, but that is mostly due to Cutch’s SB foibles.

If Andrew can get some good reads/jumps, he will make himself the best overall player in the game.

  210. JD says:

Hey Pig Legs – way to get a Geddy Lee mention in. Huge RUSH fan here. Geddy is huge into baseball. I remember seeing him sing the Canadian anthem before an All-Star game.(should have sung “Tom Sawyer” instead) I think they even dedicated one of their albums to Warren Cromartie.

  211. Boise Bucco says:

Well, on the one channel that I get right now, a bunch of 14 year old girls are wearing tights and doing flips and stuff…wonder how DK’s doin’ over in London right now.

  212. JohninOshkosh says:

Where is everyone? This blog should be lighting up.

  213. Jay Jax Fl via New Castle says:

You guys must be more superstitious than Browny…….,

  214. TDB1977 says:

    Watching in amazement

  215. DemonDachshund says:

It’s fun to listen to Greg Brown dance around saying That Which Can Not Be Named.

  216. Boise Bucco says:

It’s possible they’re out in the parking lot chiseling AJ’s statue…

  217. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

IF AJ stays this way……….Line 2 should be zeroed……..either direction

  218. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    CAN’T BE NAMED!!!!!!

  219. Pig Legs Robinson says:

    JD –
Big Rush fan here too. Was the first band I ever went to in 1981 at the Arena. Last saw them in ’98 at Starlake. My older brother saw them open for Kiss in 1974 and came home and said they blew Kiss of the stage. He seeked out their first album and the rest was history. Favorite song is still ‘Workin’ Man’.

  220. Eric Bowser says:

    interesting box score tonight

  221. TDB1977 says:

What’s happening in Wrigley has gotten DK out of bed at 2:30 AM in London. Just posted on twitter.

  222. JMB says:

  223. Eric Bowser says:

    some loser hits a pinch-hit single….. ugh.

  224. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

  225. TDB1977 says:

  226. pattonbb says:

nice ovation from the Cub fans

  227. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I jinxed it, sent a text to the wife while I’m stuck in class to

    I swear, that’s all I said.

  228. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Haven’t you noticed, DK doesn’t sleep…….

  229. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Still, he better not get taken out, you hear that Hurdle?

  230. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    He’s close to 100 pitches…….

  231. Nice job by AJ. Ump made some tough, but good calls on that AB. Still a shutout, though, so you can’t complain about that. Go Bucs!!

  232. pattonbb says:

DK is to blame! He jinxed it.

    Kidding, of course.

  233. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

And Line 2 Goes to the OVER as well…………

I just now realized that it included walks.

got some of my points back

  234. Boise Bucco says:

Colin Dunlap jinxed it like 35 times on twitter…I think he’s secretly twentytwo22…

  235. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Neverett & Walk (radio) scared me a couple times, but they never straight out mentioned it. Somebody is to blame though, somewhere!

  236. DemonDachshund says:

    7K + 2W = 9 = OVER?

  237. JMB says:

    Marte shows the wheels!

  238. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Yea………its was 8.5……….9>than 8.5

  239. JMB says:

    Is that true?
We have 4 SBs this entire month, and Marte has 2. WOW

I guess we turned into an AL team — just waiting for the 3run bomb or in tonight’s case a granny.

  240. JD says:

    Bummer about no-hitter.

Pig Legs – I’ve seen RUSH over 20 times. They still rock it. Going to see them this fall in Detroit and Columbus. I’m pretty sure they are at Consol in Sept.

  241. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Well, this I’ll remember right up there with the Karstens’ first start. A.J. has come close to many others. He first became famous with his high-walk no-hitter as a rookie. Been drafting him yearly on my fantasy teams ever since. When Schilling retired, Burnett became the pitcher I’ve had the most over the years.

  242. Eric Bowser says:

    Shudda bin a no hitta

  243. JohninOshkosh says:

Dejan’s tweets are great. He must wake up with his phone on the pillow next to him, throw out a tweet and go back to bed. It is incredible how he never seems to sleep. The CIA and the Army ought to study him.

    Undefeated since the trade deadline.

  244. TDB1977 says:

Raise the Jolly Roger. Great job Neal and AJ! Lets go for the series victory tomorrow.

  245. pattonbb says:

    ….fear the Bones….

  246. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    RTJR baby!!!!!!!

    Great game AJ

  247. Drew71 says:

Pigsie – Blame me. My fault.

I returned from dinner, checked on the game, and that very moment, base hit.

    It’s me. It’s always me.

I think Dejan banned the wrong guy.

  248. DemonDachshund says:

    59-44, 59 games left.

    22-37 needed for 81-81.
    29-30 would mean 88-74.

3 back of the Reds for the division.

0.5 up on ATL for the home WC (leading MIA 6-1 B6)
3.5 up on LA (trailing ARI 2-1 B3) and SF (leading NYM 2-1 B3) for away WC
4.5 up on STL (leading COL 9-5 B7)

  249. Eric Bowser says:

Drew71 – You should probably turn in your Bucco Badge and enter the jinx protection program.

  250. Drew71 says:

Where was that program when I needed it twenty four and a half years ago?

Yep. That’s right. Big anniversary in January.

  251. JRay3 says:

Behind the dominant pitching of Cy Young candidate AJ BURNETT who earns is 13th win in a one hitter (though he should have gotten that call in the 8th) and another Grand Slam in Wrigley by Neil Walker the Bucs route the Cubs 5-0 in the middle game of the series and there was nooooooooooooooo doubt about it!

With the win the Bucs are once again 15 games above the .500 mark and remain just 3 back of the Reds in the Central and currently 3.5 up in the WC race. Jeff Karstens takes the hill tomorrow afternoon as the Bucs will look for another series win on the road.

  252. JRay3 says:

Looking ahead to the Reds series we have Rodriguez and J-Mac scheduled to throw the first two games. This is a big series so I ask do you pitch AJ Burnett on normal rest for the last game of the series on Sunday and push Bedard back or keep the rotation in tact and let Bedard pitch that game?

I vote push Bedard back and let AJ pitch the series finale versus Cincinnati!

  253. Thundercrack says:

I think DK just blamed Kyle Stark for jinxing the no hitter.

    I blame Drew.

  254. Drew71 says:

    Let him pitch all three

  255. Milo Hamilton says:

That was awesome. Figures it was some no name, just like Sil Campusano. Can’t wait to watch it tomorrow night on NBC.

  256. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Or in 2042

  257. Drew71 says:

You’re wrong about Dejan. He blamed NBC.

But sadly, right about me. Bad luck for almost 25 years.

    Freaking arranged marriages.

Tho it worked pretty well for Dejan.

(Only possible explanation. Talk about marrying out of your zip code.)

What’s the matter with me? Great game, great night, and I’m still mean.

  258. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    You’re rambling……..sounds like you’re having a conversation with yourself.
