  1. Bizrow says:

Its been a good day on the blog, but theres also been a poster or two looking for an argument,

Thanks to everyone for not taking the bait

  2. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Quit looking for an arguement……..

  3. LuckyNKentucky says:

I’m sure glad to see Jones in there against a lefty again. I don’t know how you can take him out as consistent as he’s been. Snider and Gaby can grab the pine when necessary, but GJ needs to stay a fixture, at least until he proves differently.

  4. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Would’ve liked to have seen Mercer………just sayin’

But Barmes had a couple of hits yesterday………played defense well….

Eh, still don’t see the point on leaving him there to watch.

  5. Playoffs by 2012 says:

The mob has spoken and the PICK ‘EM will remain. Thanks to everyone for their feedback.

  6. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

If we say it, it will happen………maybe

  7. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I’ll take 100 OVER on both lines please.

    5-4 Buccos

  8. T.S. says:

No reason Barajas should be in there as long as Mike is lighting the world on fire.

  9. JRay3 says:

Based on the lineups last couple games maybe the platoon will be Gaby and Snider with Sanchez starting versus the LHP and Snider versus the RHP.

I just want to know what more can the Fort do to get more playing time? I understand he does not throw out runners but neither does Barajas.

Going to be a tough four game set. The Dbacks (whom are only 4 games out in the West) play the game like this Bucs team, they will battle you the full nine innings and are made of a lot if interchangeable parts, blue collar type ballplayers and a gritty team mentality, definitely have taken on the Kirk Gibson identity.

  10. JAL says:

That is mystery, does seem a waste to have Mercer sitting on the bench instead of developing more in Indy

  11. LuckyNKentucky says:

I know you don’t care, but you’re going to stir up Roberto. He’s Barmes’s agent. (kidding, RF)

    Free Jordy and Mike!

  12. RobertoForever says:

Alvarez has actually done well the last week. 5 for 17, including 2 for 5 against the LHP he faced.

Wonder if there is something else going on? Pedro sat yesterday vs Righty, now today vs Lefty.

  13. dcpinpgh says:

    50 over for line 1
100 over for line 2, if you please

  14. Bizrow says:

Playoffs 100 on the OVAH for both lines

    @Ryan – not me ;-)

I was seriously thanking the lunatics for not getting into stuff today.

Lineup wise, we got three hitters very close to the mendoza line

Best thing to happen is to start this 11 game homestand off with a W.

  15. JaxBuc says:

My “account” has been moving on a downward plane toward zero. Time to go ALL IN.
100 on the UNDER for oft-injured EB
100 on the OVER for the hits for the top two hitters (in the lineup).

Glad you’re doing better. Maybe a hit parade by the Pirates will help tonight.

  16. AJS says:

Have to wonder if barajas is getting more starts again in response to the tailing off of some of the pitching. burnett won’t throw to anyone else. Maybe the other pitchers are asking for Rod now? Back in April and May when the pitching was lights out Barajas got the bulk of the starts. When Fort started hitting and grabbing a few more starts piching started to slide some. That may all be perception and not backed up by any statistical measure.

In no way am I suggesting this IS what is happening, just one scenario that came to mind.

  17. Jandy says:

JacBuc…thanks, friend. I will coerce the hubby into watching. I’m all fired up!
Free The Fort! Free Jordy Mercer!
    Let’s beat ‘em Bucs!

  18. RobertoForever says:

Another set of barometer o/u lines.

Line 1 – Bedard. Do you believe in the good Bedard of early in the season, and 2 of the last 3 starts. Or do you think the struggling Bedard will show up again. This is a 50/50 line to me. I think I will hedge my bet and go 25 on the OVER.

Line 2 – Harrison/Marte hits. Its very interesting on Harrison. He had only 2 starts in the entire month of July when there was plenty of opportunity. Now with 2 upgrades to the roster at the All-Star break, Harrison makes an move and now has his 4th start in 6 days in August. But he has been very good in his starts, and he hits LHP ok, and Marte VERY well. Marte also has multi-hit games in 5 of his 8 starts. I think with Marte getting 2 hits and Harrison adding 1, I like the OVER for 75 units.

Let’s get this winning streak started!

  19. RobertoForever says:

By the way, anyone watching this women’s soccer game between the U.S. and Canada? The Canadian women are bringing the hockey thuggery to the pitch! One Canadian just stomped on the head of an American player while she was down. OUCH!

  20. AJS says:

Prior to the break i looked at the line up and thought how in the world are they scoring so many runs. Post break I thought, this run production looks more like expected, we need a bat. Post deadline I look at the line up and see Jhay, barmes, Barajas, and Gabby Sanchez all in on eline up and think, this team is only going to score if Walker, Jones, and Cutch ht balls over the fence. Can we just get a couple of guys who hit for decent average around this joint? A 1b hitting .210, a SS hitting worse than that and a catcher, who at one point raised his average to .235 is now back down in the .200s.

But yet I bet they find a way to scrape together 5 tonight and win.

  21. RobertoForever says:

Indy Indians with another pitcher named as the IL pitcher of the week. Rick VandenHurk went 2-0 with 2.08 ERA and 14k’s

  22. JRay3 says:

@ RobertoForever – Nice week for arms in the Bucs system and Jameson Tallion was named the Florida State Pitcher of the Week.

  23. Glad to hear the Canadian women are going all Christian Laettner!

    GO DUKE!!!!!!

  24. RobertoForever says:

WOW Jose Mijares, a player discussed as a possible Pirates trade pick-up, was just claimed off waivers by the Giants. Mijares is making less than $1 million, 27 yo with a 2.56 ERA as a Lefty reliever. 2 more years of control.

I guess this is one bad thing to having the 3rd best record in the NL. Near last on waiver claims.

  25. TK says:

    Line 1 – 100 on the under

    Line 2 – 100 on the over

  26. RobertoForever says:

Did anyone mention that AJ Burnett was named NL Player of the Week for last week?

Going 2-0 with a 1-hitter CG and 8.2 IP with a 4 hitter will do that for ya!

Congrats to AJ – on the CY track.

  27. JRay3 says:

@ Playoffs – Good afternoon. Multi-line Monday is back and time to try and recapture the top spot.

Line 1 – Well I am going to go with a trend that I just spotted, in 4 of his last 5 starts at PNC Erik Bedard has gone under the number with 1,4,1,2,0 runs allowed.

I will take 75 on the UNDER

Line 2- I think one needs to take a look at the opposing pitcher Wade Miley who was an All-Star and is a very difficult assignment. In his last three starts Miley has given up 3, 9 and 4 hits. Josh Harrison actually has better splits versus RHP than LHP where he is hitting .238.

I will take 75 on the UNDER

    Thanks and Let’s Go Bucs!

  28. Bizrow says:

Maybe Clint is giving some guys some breaks/days off.

I don’t know though, as soon as I heard they were going to give Snider “every chance”, I figured, heard that one before.

    Just sayin…

  29. radio wave says:

    At playoffs:
50 on the over line 1.
    75 on the over line2.

  30. Jay Jax Fl via New Castle says:

Playoffs…….100 on the under (1)…..100 on the over (2), Thanks. Go Bucs. This is a weird lineup. Nothing against Barajas/Barmes, but it starting to get hard to justify not playing others……this .190 crap is hard to keep throwing at people. Sure Barmes had a couple hits early in the game, but bad K’s toward the end of the game with guys on looked really bad…….hope they both go 4-4 tonight…..but jeez…..

  31. RobertoForever says:

Yes it was. Good catch on Taillon. Bradenton involved in their own pennant chase, just 1/2 game back of the division leader.

Hoep Bedard is inspired by the pitching prowess.

  32. JRay3 says:

    Tonight’s Dbacks Lineup:

Bloomquist SS, Hill 2B, Kubel LF, Goldshmidt 1B, Upton RF, Montero C, Johnson 3B, Young CF, Miley P

  33. NMR says:

Jones in against a lefty seems odd until you see that Snider’s left on left splits aren’t much better. Yikes.

I’m not opposed to Pedro getting some platoon work, either. He still is just plain bad against lefties and Harrison made good of his opportunity over the weekend.

I have faith in Bedard. He posted two quality starts after the break and lost it last time out to one (really) bad inning. I think he can, I think he can, I think he can…

  34. On July 31, Neil Huntington announced that he had obtained the outfield bat, the magic “piece,” that would help the Bucs get over the top in their drive to win the National League Central Championship. Both he and Frank Coonnelly deemed it a perfect Deadline deal.

On August 6, that “magic piece” sits for a second straight game because a lefty is pitching.

I think the magic has gone out of our relationship!!!

  35. Kevin says:

    Playoffs –

Line 1: 50 on the UNDER

Line 2: 100 on the OVER. I think Marte is getting more comfortable…no idea why I think that, but I think he’s due for a solid, multi-hit game (hoping 3/4 tonight).

  36. I guess the ALL IN Coonnelly claimed on the radio [obviously referencing Dejan’s column] was only good for 5 days!

  37. NMR says:

The LA Dodgers took on approximately $90m in payroll at the deadline and Ned Coletti looks like a genius.

How can you blast Huntington and Coonely while the man who signs the checks is forgotten?

  38. DemonDachshund says:

This is another one of those games where I look at the matchups and think there’s just no chance.

Which probably means a win is in store.

  39. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I would not want to stir up anything.

  40. JRay3 says:

Congrats to Brock Holt and Kyle McPherson both promoted to AAA Indy both making first trip up to Indy.

  41. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I am not against Clint Barmes, completely.

I just think its stupid to bury a guy on the bench when he was producing at the AAA level quite well.

I’d rather have a vet on the bench that can play multiple positions (Drew Sutton, J-Hay) than what appears to be a one trick poney of Jordy Mercer. He doesn’t pinch hit, pinch run, come in late in the ball game for defensive purposes………WTH is he there for?

  42. NMR says:

    Thanks, JRay

Pretty quick climb for McPhereson after being stuck in A ball through half of last year.

  43. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Brock Holt….pretty cool name for a baseball player.

  44. bobhasis says:

AW, I don’t know who you purport yourself to be, but if someone without prior provocation says to you “Bite me”, what do you derive from that? I attacked no one while stating my opinion of Hurdle.

If I have an opinion that is different than yours, is that automatically “over the top”?

An opinion comes from ones perception (it could be based on fact) of a thing, an idea, a person, a fashion trend, music, etc., etc.

I don’t intend to belabor the issue of Hurdle today or ever in this space, but here are reasons (facts perhaps) why I disagree with Hurdle. But first, I would be remiss if I didn’t say that he is far, far better than any of his most recent predecessors.

    1. He insists on putting mediocrity (Barmes) into the lineup every day, with no justifiable reason as I see it. He has options but remains adamant against trying Mercer, JHay.
    2. Lately Barajas has fallen into that level of non-productivity, offensively, as well.
    3. He insists on letting Cutch run (steal), instead of teaching him how.
    4. Earlier in the season, he insisted on trotting Tabata out there in the face of Tabata’s ineffectiveness, inability to bunt, laziness in the field, blunders on the bases and in post-game pressers, overlooked, or at least never explained it.
5.Just recently since we have acquired Snider and Sanchez, he has found the opportunity – maybe it’s necessity – to get them in the lineup. Mercer and Harrison were treated a bit differently. He even put Sutton in ahead of Mercer and Jhay only to find – as many of us had already known – Sutton was no answer to anything.
6 I totally disagree with his treatment of Correia.
    7. His insistance on bunting (sacrificing) early in the game with people who he never taught how to bunt (as if he should have to) only to screw up the bunt and snuff out a potential rally, wanting to play for one run instead of a game-breaking monster inning – ala John Russell.
8 In my opinion, I doubt that he is a good in-game strategist.
9 He hired the worst 3rd base coach in baseball, and possibly worst hitting coach – though I don’t know that.

Look, ironically and perhaps unbelievably to you, I actually like Hurdle mainly because he was replacing Russell. But the objections stated above that caused my alienation to Hurdle are basically my opinions, which based on yesterday’s exchanges, do not concur with your’s and others.

It is your opinion that “I’m over the top” , I suppose because we disagree. Some presumption
    on your part.
If everything was simply and purely black and white, now that would be boring. With accountants, tax people, bean-counters (and no offense is intended here, just using an example), opinions matter not. Facts and figures are necessary only.

You like Chevy, others may like Nissan; does that have to be substantiated with fact.

IT’S AN OPINION! There may be reasons, but it doesn’t matter – it’s an opinion.

And OM, I’ll disregard your “over the top” greeting from yesterday.

  45. Hal Smith says:

I find it necessary to vote for over on both wagering 75 on both.

    Thank you

  46. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I find this a little over the top………nobody prefers Nissan over Chevy’s……c’mon man!!

  47. NMR says:

bob is clearly getting paid to post by the anti-Hurdle group. :)

  48. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Must be by character also……….I don’t think that last post was long enough OR, he just retired on it

  49. What’d I do? I’d be honored to have Ossifer tell me to bite him.

  50. NMR says:

For what its worth, I didn’t really think bob’s post was out of line until the Chevy comment…;)

  51. NMR says:

Duck and roll, Arriba. Duck and roll…

  52. DemonDachshund says:

Interesting thing about Holt moving up, imo, is that it crowds the infield a bit at AAA and makes it harder to send Mercer back down to get some playing time. Assuming they keep D’Arnaud at SS and put Holt at 2B, forces Navarro to the bench or to the OF.

Only a month left in the minor league season though, so not like Mercer would get a lot of action even if he were sent down.

  53. NMR says:

    I had similiar thoughts, DemonDog.

It would really be a shame if the Pirates can’t produce a serviceable MLB shortstop out of D’Arnaud, Mercer, and Holt.

  54. Stickyweb says:

Let’s go UNDER for 100 on line 1

and OVER for 100 on line 2

  55. MadTurk says:

No collapse yet and haven’t really seen one coming. What’s a couple of games in baseball? nada. time will tell. will sweat it out more after another 40 45 games.

#46 and others, Pedro had some bad calls but even the anoucers the other day were commenting on how Presley never gets the outside call.
In this past series witht the REDS all our players were getting bad calls off the plate.

So much fun to still be in the hunt, looking foward to every game now.

  56. MadTurk says:

so far behind in reading the posts, #46 in the previous post was for the earlier thread

  57. crkkid says:

    @ playoffs

Let me get 100 units on the under for #1 and 100 units on the over for #2.

  58. DemonDachshund says:

    @Playoffs –

Line 1 – Going to hope for Good Bedard, though I really fear Bad Bedard. 20 on the UNDER.
    Line 2 – 100 on the OVER.

  59. I like Hurdle.
    I like the bunt.
I like Hurdle’s loyalty to his players, that he allows them to work out their woes.
I like Barmes’ consistency at short. The field matters more than the bat at SS.
I like Jordy Mercer. I wish he would play one more game per week at SS.
I never like Josh Harrison at short, even when it works for a game. He’s like sex without protection!
I like Hurdle’s winning attitude. On a young team without elders, he has established this team’s winning approach.
I like Ritchie as hitting coach.
I like the Fort and wish he would start more.
    I like Hurdle.

  60. RobertoForever says:

For all of those hanging on the edge of their patriotic seats, the U.S. women’s soccer team defeated Canada 4-3 with a goal in extra time in the 2nd extra time period, narrowly avoiding penalty kicks to decide it. The U.S. now face Japan for the Gold. That is all. We now return you to your regularly scheduled Pirates programming.

  61. Curt says:

100 on the UNDER for BOTH.

    Where is the Fort?!?

    Let’s Go Bucs!

  62. NMR says:

Hahaha, Groat wins the blog today…

  63. RobertoForever says:

You didn’t address Barajas, Cutch stealing or the 3rd base and hitting coaches, lol

  64. Playoffs–

75 on the UNDER for line #1

75 on the OVER for line # 2.

And I tell Arriba to bite me! I don’t know who I purport myself to be, either. Well . . . other than me.

BTW, bob, you have a long history of attacking Hurdle for this, that and the other thing, so let’s not pretend its a one time thing or opinion. I just got tired of it. My opinion. They’re 61-46. That’s the fact, Jack.

  65. DemonDachshund says:

Also from the other thread… My belief that the division was weak was based largely on an underestimation of the Reds. If you had told me that Cincy would roll off 22 of 25 without Votto, I would have thought you crazy. I’ve always been more afraid of the Cards putting together a big winning streak and running away with it.

It has nothing to do with the Pirates. I speak of the division’s strength with regards to how it impacts the Bucs and how it affects them competing, and relative to where I expect them to be. The Brewers, Cubs, and Astros are all down. The Cards lost Pujols and Carpenter, and have missed Berkman for large portions of the season. And the Cards are almost always good because they have a terrific organization.

I didn’t just blindly go by what the media was telling me. I saw plenty of reasons to believe there was a window for this year. I misjudged the Reds, badly, and thus… No weak division.

  66. Devil Dog,

The article JAL wrote {that I mentioned on the previous thread} addressed that very topic about the division, with aplomb!

  67. scapper says:

If every soccer game was half as exciting as that one, I might even relent and read DK’s long-threatened soccer column. REE-diculous game from start to finish.

  68. Bizrow says:

    Dejan’s Lunatics Fantasy Football

    League ID 362238

    Password 1203

  69. Really sorry I’m still at work and therefore missed the soccer game.

Now that you tell me it’s over, it’s safe for me to go home and turn on the TV.

  70. OZ says:

    Line 1: 100 under
    line 2: 100 over

  71. Drew71 says:

    Arriba – Bite Thunder.

  72. DemonDachshund says:

    @Groat –

Yes, and my post is basically a counter argument to that article, with the acknowledgement that there was a single misjudgement that has made the counter argument incorrect.

  73. Drew–in all seriousness, I can’t bite Thunder the cherry picker.

  74. JohninOshkosh says:

Your views on soccer are well known, my friend. But you are as a wrong as a Tar Heel cheer at Caneron here. That was a game for the ages. Marvelous drama unfolding against the historic venue. Everything to love about sport.

  75. Milo Hamilton says:

I must have missed something. Who is bob biting and why ?

You mean they haven’t fired Hurdle yet ? What can they possibly be thinking ?

Wait a minute, there’s a game today ? I thought the season was over after the Cincinnati series ?

  76. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

That post (#60) is over the top…

    I like Hurdle…..

  77. Milo Hamilton says:

Heck, I like Hugo Chavez ’cause he’s not John Russell.

  78. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    wait, wait, wait…..

Bunts are rally killers? I thought double plays were, my bad……..

I feel more educated on the details of baseball.

    Or, as Don Sutton (I think it was him on TBS) would put it;

    1. Get em on
    2. Get em over
    3. Get em in

Sounds like a winning formula to me.

  79. cosmo says:

    @ biz

thanks for the codes for ff league. I’m in.

  80. Naje says:

My goodness, that list of anti-Hurdle stuff… wow… shows what you don’t know about the game.

Just wonder how many wins a bobhasis managed PBC team would have right now… and if they’d be anywhere close to .500, let alone 15 games above .500.

Whatever you despise about Hurdle’s moves, BH, he knows damn well how to coach THIS team, THIS year.

  81. cosmo says:

    @ playoffs

    100 on the good Bedard(under)

100 on the over on line 2

    Keep em coming my friend

  82. Naje says:

You might as well go all-in and bite me too…

    (though really, I’m not asking)

  83. Milo Hamilton says:

I hope everyone’s had their tetanus shots.

  84. Naje says:

A major league team coached by a certain coach goes from 57 wins in 2010 to 72 wins in 2011 to 61 wins ON AUGUST 5TH… and with 55 games remaining that team is 15 games over .500 and that coach doesn’t know what he’s doing?

    That’s beyond comprehension.

  85. Drew71 says:

Well. It may not be cherries but I think he’s picking SOMEthing.

I just hope he’s not picking Wallace to outrace Bolt.

Cause that would be arrogance beyond belief.

  86. Naje–forget the logic, my friend, just bite me.

  87. Chico says:

line 1: 75 on the over

line 2: 50 on the under

  88. Naje says:

Drew, are you all in with your convictions about that arrogance?

  89. Milo Hamilton says:

Maybe if they only go something like 5-6 on this homestand they’ll fire him then. There’s still plenty of time to salvage this. Maybe Pat Corrales or Jim Fregosi is available.

  90. Naje says:

    (and still laughing)

  91. JohninOshkosh says:

…Jim Tracy will likely be available soon as well. LLoyd McClendon would likely take the job. What is Pete Mackanin doing?

  92. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Jim Tracy

How is that guy still employed?

75 pitch count on his starters? Bet they can’t wait to get out of Denver……….

  93. Boise Bucco says:

100 on the OVER for both lines please. Also, thought you’d like to know that 22 was being positive this morning!

  94. DemonDachshund says:

Who let the vampires into the asylum???

  95. Milo Hamilton says:

    Mackanin’s getting Charlie his Maypo.

  96. Naje says:

Bring Jack McKeon to the team… he knows how to win a world series…

  97. jeffsbar says:

    Line 1 – 100 on the UNDER

    Line 2 – 100 on the OVER

  98. Milo Hamilton says:

    Line #1 – 100 – over

    Line #2 – 100 – under

Is that Bedard line for the 1st inning ? :)

Thanks. Hope all is well with the new job.

  99. Mlrgenuine says:

    Line #1 – 50 on the UNDER
    Line #2 – 100 on the OVER

    Let’s Go Bucs!

  100. LuckyNKentucky says:

What about Danny Murtaugh? Joe Brown brought him back several times. He’d literally have to be “brought back” this time, like only 1 person in history.

  101. manny _sanguine says:

    Line 1 – 50 on the under
    Line 2 – 50 on the over

  102. McG says:

100 on the under on line 1
100 on the over on line 2

  103. pattonbb says:

    Playoffs –

    Line 1 – 100 UNDER
    Line 2 – 100 OVER

  104. RobertoForever says:

I was wondering where you were today.

I was afraid you went to Cincy to mete out your own retribution to the Reds, lol.I know your are all in like that.

And Lucky, you keep making that mistake. I am GARRETT’s agent. And I get a bonus if I can get him to 500 PA’s.

  105. Milo Hamilton says:

I’m am “all in” with you on Garrett Jones. He’s having a really good season.

  106. Milo Hamilton says:

Only 2 former Pirate players are currently managing in the big leagues – Kirk Gibson & Dale Sveum. Am I missing anyone ?

  107. cosmo says:

Good Bedard showed up for the first inning

  108. JRay3 says:

That may have been Bedard’s quickest half inning of work this year.

What a difference in pace between Bedard and Miley, Miley just gets the ball back and fires.

  109. LuckyNKentucky says:

I’m trying to get you some more clients. You and Clint are the only 2 people in Pirate Nation that want Barmes in the lineup every day. GJ will get 500 AB’s.

  110. DemonDachshund says:

    @Lucky –

I guess Roberto just serves as a publicity guy for Barmes.

  111. DemonDachshund says:

    Nice recovery by Good Bedard.

  112. RobertoForever says:

I am also Jamey Carroll’s agent so I am rooting for Barmes to get DFA’ed so Jamey can get a fat 2 yr $10 mil deal.

The facts I point out are just reality. Funny story, the Twins had a guy just like Barmes named Nick Punto. Twins mgr Gardenhire used to run him out there with a. 200 in spite of all the howling from the Twins fans. Strangely, right after Punto left, the Twins started losing.

  113. Milo Hamilton says:

Didn’t Punto get himself a World Series ring last year ?

  114. Parrothead01 says:

What ClInt has done as far as changing the mindset of the Pirates Team and helping to turn them into winners is great and every Pirate fan should should be very appreciative. That said, it still amazes me that he continually starts a catcher that is hitting under .150 since June over a catcher that is hitting over .300. We won’t even talk about the home runs and RBIs.

  115. cosmo says:

    Good Bedard thru 3.

  116. LuckyNKentucky says:

That he does. No question about it. But that’s OK. Barmes is a good guy. Just needs to get it to his career ave. Not Mendoza’s.

  117. Milo Hamilton says:

Wade Miley’s pitching like he’s double parked.

  118. Milo Hamilton says:

Bedard can barely contain his emotions.

  119. Dave G says:

Good Bedard at the plate, as well!

  120. Way to get those hands in Bedard!! First hit for the team is from the Pitcher!!

  121. Let’s go JHay!!

  122. Milo Hamilton says:

2 more singles & we have a run.

  123. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

JHay is terrible……..Glad he’s not a regular starter. Don’t mind him as a fill in, bench guy, but imagine how bad it would really be if he was an everday guy, at like, SS or something…….

  124. NPR’s saying the USA/Canada match was one of the best womens matches ever. And if you don’t trust NPR, you can bite Arriva. Bedard is an enigma, soft tossing K artist who can go from ace to goat faster than Bob Hasis can find a new reason to criticize Hurdle. I never like to see a non-power pitcher face a lineup for the 3’rd time in a game. Go Bucs!

  125. Jay Jax Fl via New Castle says:

EB is looking good so far…..

  126. JAL says:

Astros are not worse than last season, they have a better record on this date than they did last season on this date. Cubs about the same. Pirates flipped with Brewers. Cards lost Pujols but got Beltran who has been excellent with 25 HRs and 77 RBI. Reds also better.

  127. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Tough play by Barmes……part of the reason he’s run out there everyday.

    CH’s confidence in his defense.

  128. cosmo says:

Ok, let’s score a couple runs for Good Bedard.

  129. JRay3 says:

Bedard is dealing tonight just 50 pitches thru four, time for Cutch to start the inning off and get him some runs.

  130. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I really wanted to go with the UNDER on line 1 in tonight’s game. I have a feeling EB is turning the page, except for his last outing.

Who knows, still a lot of game left to play, hopefully the Buccos seeing this pitcher the 2nd and 3rd time around in the lineup will cause a problem for the Dbacks.

  131. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

  132. Cutch got lucky at second on that error, but I’ll take it. Now make them pay!!

  133. JRay3 says:

Flash the Z….that was awesome hustle! Way to start it off Cutch.

  134. cosmo says:

Now that is how you turn a bloop into 3 bases.

    get him home now!! Gaby

  135. Gaby got him home. 1-0 good guys!!

  136. JRay3 says:

Gaby Gaby doo…RBI and Bucs take early lead.

  137. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Yes, Cutch should’ve been thrown out at 2nd. But I’ll take the aggressiveness even if he gets thrown out.

Good AB by Gabby to get the run in.

  138. JohninOshkosh says:

Not a fan of the Rivers Casino marketers. The way in which the logo is designed makes the upper half of the ad on the backstop look wrinkled.

  139. Bedard is rocking with a lower than his normal K/9, which is keeping his pitch count down.

  140. JAL says:

Could have been thrown out at 2nd but sometimes making the other team execute leads to errors

  141. cosmo says:

    Let’s get some insurance runs.

  142. Jay Jax Fl via New Castle says:

They said AJ only had one season in which he had only 14 wins?????…….That gets you 14 million dollars a year……wow……I think he’s awesome, but how did the money get so far out of hand. I remember Parker getting a million dollars a year, but he had monster stats and was a top 5 guy in the league….

  143. cosmo says:

I’ll take 2 more innings of Good Bedard.

  144. JMB says:

RB thought he was Cutch for a sec!

  145. cosmo says:

Note to Barajas, you’re not Cutch

  146. JRay3 says:

Hey what do you know the Killer B’s strike…Barajas and Barmes and we are in business.

  147. JAL says:

Jay Jax Fl via New Castle

AJ won 18 in 2008, that offseason he signed the big contract with the Yanks. Next highest win total was 13 in 2009

  148. cosmo says:

    that hurt

  149. The Gunner says:

    @ Ryan – 124

You are right about JHay, at least this time

  150. JRay3 says:

Have to be able to plate one in that situation, wasted chances

  151. Keith says:

Doggone it! DP = only bad result from Harrison’s at-bat! No Cutch with men on base.

  152. Boise Bucco says:

    Wow, that sucked.

In other news, I’m looking at losing 100 points on this game

  153. The Gunner says:

JHay is a poor imitation of Pirate utility man of yesteryear, Jose Pagan. If he could be half the player Pagan was, the Bucs would have something in JHay.

  154. RobertoForever says:

Yes. Yes Punto did. And the Twins received 99 loses, lol.

  155. DemonDachshund says:

    @JAL –

Are you seriously arguing that 36-73 is not a “down” year for the Astros simply because last year they were 37-73 on this date? Last year was a “down” year. This is also a “down” year.

Your statement: The NL Central as a whole is not a weaker division than normal. True.

My statement: The competition the Pirates face this year in the NL Central is weaker than normal. False, but solely because the Reds are performing far better than I expected.

  156. cosmo says:

Good Bedard pitching like he pitched on opening day minus the K’s

  157. Wow. The Pirates taste a little success for the first time in twenty years, and suddenly some fans feel compelled to conclude that half the men who helped it happen are cockraches. I’m talking to you, Gunner.

  158. The Gunner says:

iPlease give me an example of what you are trying to say, Officer – it would be appreciated

  159. JAL says:

No I am saying they are no worse than last year–of course they are down, they were down last season too. Thus they they are not making the division worse than it was last season.

  160. DemonDachshund says:

Good thing Bedard didn’t start in Cincy. He would have been Badard.

  161. Jandy says:

    bahaha Goldschmidt blew it!

  162. Great arm in left for Marte. No soup for you Goldfish!!

  163. Jay Jax Fl via New Castle says:

There’s the arm we’ve been waiting to see.

  164. JRay3 says:

Must not have read the scouting report on Marte’s arm.

Wow what an effort Bedard has put in tonight, but let’s turn this over to Grilli and Hammer and let Erik off of this performance.

Bedard this year’s Correia in that he pitches much better at PNC versus the road.

  165. DemonDachshund says:

Tremendous throw by Marte… Expected a standup double on that.

  166. The Gunner says:

    Nice arm, Marte!!!!

  167. cosmo says:

Why did it take so long to get Marte up here??? Nice throw.

  168. Reading says:

Great rocket throw by Marte! Been a J-Hay advocate but certainly not coming through tonight. But he’s not the first Bucco to ground into a DP with the bases juiced, and he won’t be the last.

  169. Jandy says:

Hot Rod does it again lol

  170. Dave G says:

    Barajas is on again.

We got a slug on the rug! (Apologies to Bob Prince)

  171. cosmo says:

    infield hit for Hot Rod.

  172. DemonDachshund says:

    Nice sac by Barmes.

He’s put together a few nice games in a row now.

  173. Reading says:

    Unfortunately Barajas has glacial speed.

  174. cosmo says:

    great line.

  175. Pig Legs Robinson says:

All right, Barmes, getting ‘Speedy’ Barajas to scoring position!

  176. Jandy says:

I hope it’s safe to come in here n ow…I don’t want to get bitten ;)

  177. Reading says:

They ought to pinch run Presley and pinch hit McKenry.

  178. JMB says:

    Scarface Mancuso!

  179. Pig Legs Robinson says:

    Reading is Right!

  180. The Gunner says:

    @ Reading – 169

Some of the best have grounded into double plays with the bases juiced (even #21 did). I like JHay, though, he’s a gritty player.

  181. cosmo says:

we got the cross and garlic and lucky provided some holy water.
    you’re safe

  182. JMB says:

The Marte Partay was a dud. Bummer!

  183. Jandy says:

cosmo, thanks, man, I was sweating it….Lucky, you rock!

  184. Boise Bucco says:

Catching up to Minnesota one GIDP at a time

  185. Pig Legs Robinson says:

I’m happy to be facing the Snakes. The Pirates couldn’t get away with this kind of crappy hitting against the Reds. The only batter that really worries me on this team is Kubel.

  186. Who said bunts were the rally killers? Two DPs with one out tonight and men in scoring position. Need better ABs in those cases. Why not try and bunt in that case? Marte has excellent speed and we may need two hits to get Hot Rod home anyway, so why not get him to third on a bunt?

  187. RobertoForever says:

The GREAT Bedard showed up today.

And the bottom of the order produced, but the top of the order let them down. Thank goodness for Cutch’s aggressiveness. Here come Grilled Cheese and the Hammer to close out our 24th 1-run win.

  188. Jandy says:

next guy disses JHay is gonna get a slap!

  189. Dave G says:

JHay with the D! Awesome stop and throw!

  190. How about that EXCELLENT play by JHay there!? He may not be having a great game at the plate, but he has made plays.

  191. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Kubel is more dangerous in his home park though. PNC neutralizes a lot of hitters.

  192. JRay3 says:

JHay makes up for the stick by flashing the leather with that play

  193. JMB says:

    JAY-HAY w. a great stab!

  194. The Gunner says:

    @ Steve – 191

    Fabulous play by JHay

  195. Pig Legs Robinson says:

For his short time in the majors, Josh Harrison has been a fine hitter. He hasn’t even played one full season yet.

  196. The Gunner says:

    Great job, Grilli

  197. cosmo says:

need a few more games pitched like this by Good Bedard down the stretch.

  198. Dave G says:

I absolutely love Grilli’s game this season.

  199. DemonDachshund says:

Is it just me or have there been a ton of hard hit balls by opposing batters where you get concerned as they leave the bat… But it turns out that the defense is shifted exactly right, so it’s an easy out.

  200. JohninOshkosh says:

It is really special what this bullpen is doing this year. Truly shorten games with Pirate leads.

  201. Jandy says:

Demon Dog, yeah, so that means someone is doing something right ;)

  202. Dave G says:

Noticed that Grilli scribbled some words into the dirt with his index finger as he took the mound in the 8th. I tweeted him asking what that was…

    Hope he answers…

  203. JohninOshkosh says:

No score down the highway in Milwaukee with the Brewers and Reds as that game goes to the fifth.

  204. Reading says:

Not trying to dis J-Hay, as I am on record here as saying he should be our starting SS. Just felt that I should “man up” and admit that he has had a few chances to plate some runs tonight and did not, since I am always saying he should be playing.

  205. Jandy says:

    Dave G…seriously?

  206. Jandy says:

Reading, it’s all good. I appreciate everything JHay does, as i am sure you do :)

  207. That’s the way to hit and run! Wish they would do that more.

  208. Dave G says:

Clutch hit by Gaby! Cutch all the way to third.

  209. Reading says:

I think Grilli writes his grandmother’s name or his Mom, not sure. That was discussed on IPB a few weeks ago.

  210. cosmo says:

is Gaby coming out of his funk? Could turn out to be an excellant pickup.

  211. Dave G says:

Yes. Grilli clearly wrote something with the tip of his index finger.

  212. JRay3 says:

Perfectly executed hit and run and quietly Gaby has put together back to back multiple- hit games.

  213. Pig Legs Robinson says:

He needs to learn how to spell his own name. Gaby should be pronounced Gay-Bee, like ‘baby’.
To spell it like it’s pronounced it should be ‘Gabby’.

  214. Jandy says:

    Dave G & Reading, that’s cool!

  215. JohninOshkosh says:

Agree with you, Steve. H and R just are not done that much in today’s game. Beautiful to see when executed well!

  216. JMB says:

    THX BloomQ

  217. Reading says:

    We’ll take that!

  218. Jandy says:

Is that error #4 for the D-backs?

  219. JMB says:

    Thank u too Hill!

  220. JRay3 says:

Snider with a rocket…and the Bucs break it open

  221. Jandy says:

    Nice Snider!

  222. cosmo says:

Snider rips rbi single off a lefty. Flashes the Z

  223. DemonDachshund says:

C’mon, gotta get back to Marte and JHay to go for the OVER…

  224. Reading says:

And that! I’ll also acknowledge that Snider barrelled up that line shot pretty good.

  225. cosmo says:

What is Gibson thinking, bringing in relievers whose names begin with Z.

  226. Jandy says:

  227. JRay3 says:

Gaby and Snider making big contributions this half inning! Nice to see from the new additions.

Fourth run means we will see Qualls for a second time.

  228. JohninOshkosh says:

How dare Hurdle call a risky hit and run that allows Cutch to score on the infield dribbler. Very irresponsible managing. Amac could have been hurt scoring that run.

  229. Jandy says:

    OshKosh ;)

  230. Dave G says:

Gaby’s first name is Gabriel (Gab-ree-el’, Hispanic pronunciation)

  231. Jandy says:

    Great inning!

  232. JRay3 says:

Brewers take 1-0 lead on Reds in 5th

  233. DemonDachshund says:

Milwaukee scores B5, 1-0 over the Commie Reds.

  234. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Well they should spell it Gabbriel then. It would make it easier to know that we are to use the spanish pronunciation. If I see ‘Gabriel’, I instinctively say Gay-Bree-El, being that I speak English and live in America. ;)

  235. ATL up 6-1 over the city of NO brotherly love in the 9th.

  236. Jandy says:

    JHay with another great play!

  237. Jandy says:

    one more out!

  238. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Wade Miley shows why only amateurs use a pitcher’s won-lost record to judge how well they pitch. Miley pitched very well.

  239. Raise the Jolly Roger, Baby!!!

  240. Pig Legs Robinson says:

I say that because the Yankees fans ran a great pitcher out of town by doing just that.

  241. DemonDachshund says:

Do the Yankees have any other pitcher who aren’t working out for them?

They seem to do well for us.

  242. JRay3 says:

Behind seven shutout innings from Erik Bedard, the hustle of Andrew McCutchen and contributions from the trade deadline acquisitions the Bucs down the Dbacks 4-0 in game one of the four game set and there was nooooooooo doubt about itl

The Bucs will look to make it three straight in the second game of the series tomorrow evening with Jeff Karstens set to take the hill.

Back to 16 above .500….Let’s Go Bucs!

  243. Dave G says:

Second straight masterful pitching performance by the Bucs.

  244. Jandy says:

    RAISE IT!!!!!!

  245. Jandy says:

Demon Dog..I thank the yanks every day ;)

  246. Pig Legs Robinson says:

Were just lucky that the Yankees fans don’t know what stats to use to judge how well a pitcher pitches.

  247. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Yeah, Reds finally are facing some competive teams (beginning with the Bucs). Now they aren’t so at ease like when they were playing the Padres & Astros. I can see a fall-off coming for them. Pirates just need to take advantage by beating all comers.

  251. JRay3 says:

  252. Drew71 says:

    Nice win.

Could you imagine what this team could do with a manager who doesn’t, you know, bite?

  253. Playoffs— not to be a pain in the arse, but 280 + 75 = 355 for me. Of course, the person I purport to be still says “bite me” to BH.
