  1. Interesting lineup, lets get another W

  2. Interesting lineup with Pedro batting 7th, Snider getting the start against the lefty and The Fort behind the plate.

  3. I’d rather Jones than Snider, but no big deal.

  4. According to the broadcast last night Walk was told by Hurdle that Jordy Mercer will be getting some playing time during this 20 in 20 stretch. I guess that won’t be tonight.

  5. Anyone know what the attendance was last night? It should be another beautiful night again.

With Mercer, I think Clint has said that several times now.

  6. Over 24,000 Biz.

  7. Biz:

    24,213.

  8. Biz,
It was 24K. I was at the game last night and it looked right to me.

  9. Lucky:

Didn’t catch your post before I sent mine.

  10. @AJS #4

Words mean everything. Did Hurdle say Jordy will get “playing time” or “starts”, because he could pinch run tonight and technically get “playing time”.

To sorta quote Bizrow #5, We’ll believe it when we see it (and we’ll all rejoice!!!)

  11. BTW Biz, I think it was over 24K

  12. Just stating with the theme! ;-)

  13. Of course Barmes has a massive 2 game hit streak going, and had an XBH last night, so we can’t take him out now. That would be crazy. Did you hear the announcers last night say Barmes is warming up and we’re hoping he gets to his career avg…of .240? Way to shoot for the stars, eh?

  14. Caught a bit of the one and only Henry Schulman of the SF Chronicle on MLBN. He was discussing Hunter Pence’s slow start with the Giants and suggested that part of it might be the pressure to be the “big bat.” Interesting stuff. I wonder how he would have started here. With Andrew, Jones and Walker, maybe he would have fit in nicely with the Pirate hitters, much more so than anemic SF. Oh well, wish him well.

  15. John,

Yours was more accurate. I just remember from last night after looking at the highlights on Gameday. I always check the home attendance, especially on Monday, which is supposed to be a tough day for BB in the ‘Burgh. Wonder if Roberto has the running total for the season or where that can be found. Neal has probably had him get that in one of their staff meetings.

  16. Sticky,

    I like your style.

  17. Lucky:

Lot of talk in Milwaukee about how the Crew will draw next year. They are used to raking in 3 mil per year and that has definitely allowed them to boost their payroll. Maybe things are flipping between Milwaukee and the ‘Burgh. Interesting to see how the winter sales will go irregardless of the Bucco’s finish.

    Yuck, thinking about winter.

  18. @Stickyweb -

At the risk of sounding like Roberto, if Barmes could hit .240 and get his OPS up around .650, he’d be of great value to the club, given his above average defense.

Problem is, of the 4 months with meaningful statistical data, Barmes has come close to that once.

  19. @Demonpuppy #18

Agreed. And can you imagine the tear he’ll have to go on to drag his current numbers up to those averages? We could bat him 2nd if he gets that hot!

  20. Thanks Lucky.

  21. I like the lineup. Jones could use a break.

Would like to see Gabby blister the ball tonight.

Am I the only one that thinks Gabby looks like Pujols?

Check him out tonight. He looks similiar and his batting stance/approach is similiar, except his hands are held differently.

Now, if he can produce HALF of what AP does……think that will work out just fine.

  22. Biz…you are so correct…Clint has stated many times that may times about Mercer.

It is a shame they are making him wate away on the bench. He must feel like a Rule V draft pick!

    ————

Thanks to all for welcoming me over here. At least I know it’ll be safe (sorta) to venture into the water….unless it really IS pee! Lol

Just not sure how much I wanna post. I think I need the break.

    Watery Foo

    .

  23. #FREEJORDYMERCER

  24. By no means am I asking for JM to take over full-time, but some playing time would be awesome.

  25. Looking forward to my daily dose of Foo-sdom.

  26. Last night at the game I mentioned to someone that I haven’t seen Sanchez hit any ball hard. Nothing deep to the outfield, and it doesn’t seem like any of his hits have been line drives (lots of dribblers).

Someone pointed out that the same could be said for Snider.

  27. @Thunder

In reality, as long as those guys are getting on base…….that’s cool, but I would like to see some hard hit balls from time to time, especially on FB swings.

Hell hit one foul 450 ft.

  28. Re: #15

According to Espn.com’s MLB attendance report, through 49 dates, the Pirates have attendance of 1,289,984, for an average of 26,509. This ranks 16th. According to the ESPN standings, the Pirates have played 50 home games (34-16), so the figures may not include last night’s game.

  29. @Thunder

Didn’t Gabby Goo have a line drive that almost took Miley’s head off last night? Not the hit-n-run with Cutch on 1st, but his other hit. If that was him, you really can’t hit a ball much harder.

And if I’m misremembering and it was actually someone else, I’m blaming it on the Captain and Cokes

  30. I thought that Gabby did a nice job of hitting the ball to the right side.

Not sure if that was him that almost took the pitcher’s head off.

  31. Foo Eschewing!

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Disney . . . . . I mean, Dejan!!

    .

    .

    Foo to Mr. Strangeglove

  32. Hey Oshkosh b’gosh!

After the Pirate game last night, I watched the replay of the USA/Canada [blank] match from the 60 minute mark.

    All on your recommendation.

Just don’t tell anyone else———it will ruin my image!!!

  33. Sorry for the late start, it has been the day of never-endings meetings.

Tonight’s OVER / UNDER (always for fun of course)

Total Hits + Walks by Pedro Alvarez
    Line is 1.5

*** MAXIMUM IS 100 (FAKE) UNITS ON ANY SINGLE LINE ***

  34. @Playoffs

    100 on the UNDER

    Thank you.

  35. Tom,

Thanks for the figures. That doesn’t sound bad to me with 30 more home dates left. Should break 2 million easy then, with playoff games, with higher ticket prices, we could maybe afford some extensions.

  36. Playoffs. 50 on the over. Go Bucs.

  37. @playoffs

Let’s go 50 on the under. Thanks!

  38. @Sticky #10

I believe the words Walk used were “get a shot” and he was saying it in reference to the starts being given to JaHay the past couple of days. I did not hear a direct quote from Hurdle only what Walk was saying.

  39. @ playoffs

let’s go pedro after a couple days off how about a 2 hit night.
    100 on the over.

  40. WOW!

Pedro batting in front of only Home Run Baker Barmes and the pitcher.

Even Derek Bell and Joggin’ George Hendrick batted higher than that!!

Maybe tomorrow night he bats 10th!

  41. 50 on the UNDER, but I hope I’m wrong.

  42. At playoffs:
    50 on the under.
    Thanks

  43. @Playoffs

    100 on the OVER

    Thanks

    Let’s Go Bucs!

  44. @ groat

Joggin George, nice, I’d forgotten about him

  45. Hey Groat;

I appreciate the notice, my man!

Heading to the county fair with the kids tonight. Go Buccos!

  46. @Playoffs -

    40 on the UNDER please.

  47. Playoffs –

100 on the OVER please. Thank you.

Just let those folks holding all the meetings know that you have other, more important things to take care of…!

  48. Playoffs…..have to go 100 on the under and then root that I’m wrong.

  49. Oshkosh b’gosh!

Make one attempt at knocking down the milk bottles with those mushy baseballs——for me!

And don’t throw up on the Tilt-a-Whirl in front of the kids. They’ll be embarassed.

  50. @ Playoffs – I am going to go 50 on the UNDER.

    Let’s make it 3 straight…Go Bucs!

  51. @ Playoffs –

    100 on the UNDER. Thanks!

  52. @Playoffs

Let me get 100 units on the under.

    Thanks!

  53. @Tom P et al., there was a doubleheader during one of the homestands, so that is why there is one less attendance date.

  54. @playoffs – Pedro is rested, I’m betting 100 dingers on the OVAH

leefoo, welcome, the only problem IMO with this site is that you have to refresh, but we do have a leader and a newspaper that gives a ratspatoot about us

What with you, Jandy and Drewmeister here, well, us burghers love laughing and love fireworks

  55. 100 on the OVER

    Thanks playoffs

  56. Playoffs: 50 on the UNDER, please, and like everybody else, I hope I’m wrong.

  57. @Playoffs, I would like to put down 100 on the OVER for tonight. Thanks.

  58. Playoffs, 100 on the UNDER

    Thanks.

  59. Playoffs

100 on the under tonight please. Thanks

  60. Two dingers for Pedro tonight

Crap, its only 6:30, easy Biz

  61. @playoffs please consider me for 75 double eagles on the over. My glass is half full tonight.

@Foo Nice to see you here. Completely understand wanting to take a break from regular posting. Post when you want to. There are really no expectations here.

    Sympathetically Stuart

    Stuart66

  62. @playoffs,

    50 on the UNDER pls

    thanks

  63. 50 on the over please

  64. @Playoffs

I am going with 75 on the over. Why ? I have absolutely no clue, as I’ve proven here all season.

  65. Fidty on the over

  66. 100 on the UNDER

Like the changes in the lineup!

  67. Watch out fish, swimmers, birds and boaters on the Allegheny

    Just sayin, Pedro is due

  68. That darn Goldschmidt!

  69. Marte with bat, Marte with wheels…nice rip by Snider…chance to get one right back.

  70. What happened? Espn game center says goldschmidt grounded out to the pitcher and yet the run scored.

  71. Last night, I noticed that Jason Grilli bends over and writes some letters on the mound when he enters a game.

I traced down this tweet from 7 weeks ago about why:

“Just a tribute in the dirt to some of the important people in my life.”

  72. Never noticed the PNC Park sign on the limestone wall behind home plate before.

  73. Goldschmidt lined the ball off Karstens and it richocheted over to Pedro who had no play.

  74. Not a good start to the second

  75. Reading—me neither now that you mention it, at least not that sign.

  76. Nice homerun by Drew considering he was struck out on the pitch before. This is seriously getting ridiculous.

  77. hitting him hard

  78. Tough play but have to come down with that catch

  79. foo, check your + email

  80. Where is 22 ? I need him to vent for me.

  81. C’mon Karsty, let’s get outta this. Strikeout, popup.

  82. @JRay

Garrett Jones is our best defensive rightfielder. Snider’s a hack out there.

  83. Good thing we did not give up the farm on that Upton stiff. Drew, given that he went yard, maybe we should have gone all in and gotten him.

  84. Nice job by Karstens to avoid further damage.

  85. JUST LIKE THAT WAY TO GO KARSTY

  86. Lost my MLB.com video feed for a few minutes…

Reds will retire Barry Larkin’s number #11 on August 25th.

  87. @ Milo Hamilton

#83- That is a scary thought….I remember not too long ago talk of us potentially having the best defensive OF…how things can change.

At least Snider stroking the ball today…single, double

  88. Cutch given a sac fly on dropped fly ball in first: RBI, no dent in his average…

  89. Cutch comes thru……….AGAIN!!!

  90. Can’t believe they pitched to Cutch he is only hitting .440 versus LHP….nice tie game!

  91. Karstens, like Burnett, seems to me too feel unusually free to throw 2 feet inside of home plate. I’m convinced that *this* freedom is the team’s controlled response to the Cincinnati situation. At a pitching level, it works. Is it good for the game? Dunno. George Will’s diatribe about American football being a guilty pleasure is tangentially relevant on this. http://m.herald-zeitung.com/mobile/opinion/columns/article_b4bec1cc-ddbf-11e1-a130-001a4bcf887a.html .

    Go Karstens!

  92. IMO, this could be a big inning for Kartsy

Shut em down, or get lit up

  93. G2M—don’t know if you’re here, or still watching Soccer replays, but I got my Stargell stamps today. They are now selling them on sheets with just Wilver at the PO. Trouble is, I don’t want to use them. :-)

  94. Love Marte’s arm. Reminds me of Jason Bay. (duck)

  95. I have those stamps too AW — pretty cool!

  96. So. When they coming out with Jason Bay stamps?

  97. @AW -

I do think Bay and Marte have the same number of MLB outfield assists.

  98. C’mon Pedro!

    Daddy needs a new car!

  99. Milwaukee up 2-0 on Ramirez HR.

  100. Jason Bay stumps?

I got two of them in the back yard

  101. I tried to trade the stumps, all I got was four stinkbugs

Two quick outs in the 5th

  102. @ Steve – 102

Good news about Stinkcinnati & Milwaukee. Let’s hope it continues.

    Great inning for Karstens.

  103. Lots of good looking scores around the league early…Braves down 3-0 to Phils, Brewers up on Reds 2-0, and Giants plate three in first and lead Cards 3-0.

  104. Now THAT’S a Karstens inning.

  105. @Bizrow -

But did the stinkbugs have years of control?

  106. “7 Minutes that Changed Biz’s Backyard.”

  107. Nice hit, Elmer!!

  108. Barmes with lead off double now time for Karsty to get him over!

  109. Barmes has done much better since people started calling him Elmer Fudd.

  110. Jeff needed to take the bat back and swing away and knock the ball off the first baseman to get them back for hitting him earlier.

  111. @ Arriba Wilver – 112

    Thank you AW

  112. Two things this club needs to focus on next spring in Bradenton:

    Execution of sacrifice bunt
    Throwing base stealers out

  113. Let’s go Duke!

  114. Gaby needs to bail out Karstens x2.

  115. And the failed sac bunt is a killer.

  116. Why would bat a 200 non hitter clean up protecting your best hitter.

  117. Because Neal traded for him?

  118. I live in South Florida and have seen quite a few Marlins games this year. Sanchez hasn’t hit to many balls hard all year. Definitely not a clean up hitter.

  119. Biz #55, glad I’m appreciated :)

Karstens settling down. Happy to see that…Time for OUR bats to get busy!

  120. Come on Pedro!!! Bring Mikey home.

  121. Fort rakes a double…come on El Toro

  122. More runners stranded on base ::sigh::

  123. Getting all the right at bats… Just not in the right order.

  124. Yet another rookie shutting down this line-up.

  125. Lets pull this dam thing out

This one is ours for the taking ;-)

  126. Sing it Biz!

  127. Well the reds cards and braves are all losing its time to get our bats going for another come from behind win

  128. Top o’ the order. LETS GO BUCS!!!

  129. BOMB for MARTE!!!

  130. MARTE PAAAAAAAAAAAAAARTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

  131. He hit one to the backwards Z in center! Nice shot Starling!!! Tie ballgame at 3.

  132. It’s a Marte Par-Tay….solo Bomb! that was clobbered.

  133. Snider having a great game with another hit.

  134. They have to pitch to Cutch now.

  135. and the new kids in town are taking charge

  136. How about Travis Snider with a three hit night? He is hitting .350 with the Bucs.

  137. There you go Cutch!!! 2nd and 3rd with NO out!!

  138. and Cutch keeps it going!

  139. MVP! MVP! Double for Cutch!

  140. Marte goes deep & here come the Big Bad Buccos!!

  141. Cutch rips a double down third base line…2nd and 3rd 0 out…MVP

  142. lol afraid of G I Jones

  143. lol intentional walk to face PRNW

bases loaded 0 outs…go get ‘em!

  144. Garrett Jones should have started. I have way more confidence in him than Gaby Sanchez. Garrett has been knocking in tough, important runs all year and has been a huge part of the Pirates success this season. You can’t sit him down for a guy who hasn’t been in this thing all year like Jones has.
    Jones should be playing everday.

  145. Wouldn’t it be nice if Snider turns into the new Brian Giles? I know it is a small sample size in the Burgh, but he is starting to get it done for us the past couple games.

  146. Hey Playoffs, got a good over/under line for this situation? ;)

  147. Steve, I am REALLY liking Snider

  148. Marte-Snider-Cutch 7 for 9 tonight with two walks. Amazing.

  149. You know folks, Zoltan type years don’t happen that often

    I lived one in 60

    Anything can happen

  150. Another Z pitcher. Let’s do what we did to him last night. Zoltan!!

  151. Sac fly scores Snider with a hard slide.

    I hear you Jandy!

  152. Walker plates Snider on sac fly… BucZ winning!

  153. Has Marte learned the Z sign yet?

I’m so glad his plate discipline is terrible.

  154. Nicely done Walker! first lead of night time to tack on!

  155. I just hope Snider is easier on the eyes than Giles, who always reminded me of a little old lady with a big head.

  156. @ Pig Legs – 148

You are 100% correct. Garrett Jones has definitely earned his stripes and deserves to start every game!

Buccos up by 1 – is Stinkcinnati still losing??

  157. Battlin’ Bucs

  158. 4-3 Good guys now with ATL losing to PHI. The other two poser teams are still losing as well. ADD ON!!!

  159. Maybe we are seeing why so many Blue Jays fans were upset to lose Snider…has the look of gritty ballplayer.

  160. Pig Legs, take my word for it, Snider is easy on the eyes ;)

  161. 2-0 Milwaukee over Cincinnati, middle of the 6th

Fiers for Milwaukee is pitching a *ahem* heck of a game right now

  162. Greg Brown just mentioned that the Reds are getting NO HIT tonight into the 6th.

  163. My bad Boise, I hope I didn’t just blow it on the Reds game.

  164. @Jandy –

Snider was a GREAT pick up for the Buccos…hard charger! Glad you are on board.

  165. Game alert- Michael Fiers has been perfect versus Cinci through six as Brewers still lead 2-0 B 6.

Giants lead Crads 3-1 B 5 and Hunter Pence is 0-3.

  166. @Steve haha wouldn’t break my heart, either way

  167. Incredible as it seems, that was only the 66th GDP (by McKenry) for the Bucs this year, which is the FEWEST in the NL.

  168. Reds and Cards losing tonight………

  169. Why is it that there is usually one guy in every series that we can NOT get out. Goldfish is the one this series. Need to hold them Grilli.

  170. I starting to worry that Grilli is getting overworked.

  171. Barmes pulled a Cedeno.

  172. Need a K real bad now

  173. We get out of this pickle…

  174. How about a flyball to Marte that he gets a chance to gun out Goldfish at home.

  175. @ AW – 176

Don’t you mean Fudd pulled a Cedeno? Also, Grilli is in trouble tonight.

  176. Awesome……..I guess Grilli wants a win. Another comeback time for the Buccos

  177. Did they not learn anything from when Johnson was with Houston. @#$$%^$%

  178. Or not…………Well, at least the other guys are losing too

  179. Should have gotten Grilli out there sooner then that.

  180. Absolutely sickening for us diehard Bucco fans!

  181. They probably should have took out Grilli after that first hit, and definitely after the second one. Don’t know why Hurdle left him in.

  182. Jandy

    So many jokes

  183. Yeah, Grilli not making ANYONE look silly tonight. As Clint said there’s two types of players, humble ones and ones that will be humbled (or something like that).

  184. There goes that streak of 40-some and 0 after 7 or 8 innings. Grilli not with it tonight. Beat on an 0-2 pitch when he could have wasted a few to see if he would offer, then starts off the next guy with a ball.

  185. At least we have 2 more chances to get this game back into the good corner.

  186. Where is Jared Hughes??

  187. Substandard.

  188. @Pigs

Because guys get hit. If he threw a double play there, everyone would be cheering.

8th inning specialist don’t get pulled like a LHP specialist.

  189. Seriously, put Hughes in rather than Grilli then let Grilli pitch the 9th?

    Not a hater, just sayin’….

  190. Not good

Many games left, and this is not quite OVAH

  191. Where is the reset button for this inning?

  192. If Fudd covers 2nd on Grilli’s pick off attempt, Goldfish is probably out and the momentum shifts.

What a crappy throw by Pedro!!

  193. Unfolding……..

  194. Just like that we give up the lead and Cincy and STL score a run each. They are both still losing, but closer games now.

  195. Ryan, jokes? This is sad :(

  196. Still speechless from the Grilli homer. He’s such a gamer. I feel terrible.

We gotta get back to the top of the order in the bottom of the ninth to have a shot…

  197. Why not Mercer instead of Presley?

  198. Pedro’s gonna put me in the poor house

  199. On the bright side, SF and MIL both got their runs back.

  200. Psycho strikes out Goldschmuck. Bout time.

  201. Lurch is taking control!

  202. So this loss, assuming they lose, will be a wash with the other guys……….No big deal.

  203. Ryan, it’s just disheartening.

  204. Another arrow thru the heart. 8-4 D’Backs.

  205. Drill this Jihnson guy since he owned us in Houston also.

  206. Eh, it happens……..

  207. These games happen. Win it tomorrow and they win the series…….

  208. Come in Man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  209. I guess we weren’t meant to win tonite

  210. Well that’s all folks. 10-4 D’Backs. Bullpen just miserable tonight.

  211. Leave Hughes out there……….let him take one for the team.

  212. @Ryan, unfortunately this is a 4 game series. Need to win the next two.

  213. Walker still wants this thing. Nice play.

  214. 27-27 still gets 89-73.

Did anyone expect them to go 54-0 to end the season?

    0-1, that’s it.

  215. There is still a long way to go

ATTN rookies, and no offense intended.

In a week or so, WE (Jandy, I said WE) just might be in a pennant race for keeps

One of the best parts is the up and down of it, and now its on cable

WE (Jandy, please see WE) are winning this dam thing.

I am all in (Demondachsy knows I won a dollar betting Jeff King would drive in 100 runs)

    CRAP, sucked in again, naturally…

Good night DD and all, good tidings

  216. opps, my bad……..I figured as I was typing that it would be.

I’ll be OK with a split as well, prefer the series though.

  217. Another wasted effort. Everybody loses and we can pick up a game and we collapse. There’s that word again. Missed opportunity. Reds and Cards probably come back and win now. Disgruntled

  218. Biz, lol…I see the WE =)

  219. Cutch goes yard here…….

  220. Tomorrow is another night. with that, G’night all :)

  221. Or………….not

  222. Get ‘em tomorrow.

  223. The UNDER wins tonight.
