  1. Like it……….

  2. Yikes!! That old habit of not hitting with men on base haunted the Bucs again. Just a single in the seventh by the Fort, it might have been a different ending. Instead, McHenry hit into a double play-end of story. We’ll make ‘em pay today. Glad the Reds also lost.

  3. Pick ‘em time!!

Today’s PICK ‘EM (always for fun of course)

What Will Kevin Correia Get In Tonight’s Game?
    WIN
    LOSS
    NO DECISION
(All you need to do is pick one of the above choices, and put a fake wager on it)

*** MAXIMUM IS 100 (FAKE) UNITS ON ANY SINGLE LINE ***

  4. Wow, took the day off, went and parked at the Casino (and spent some time there) and stuff happens

Could anyone please post what happened regarding the Coonelly stuff/new Pirates blog?

IMO we need more newspaper men like Dejan

  5. @playoffs

    You are truly evil

    Wonderful line per usual

100 on no decision, but Bucs win in a high scoring game

  6. Should be the best line-up Pirates have, if you substitute the Fort for Barajas.

Over/under on how many more times we see this line-up or the one with Fort there? 3

  7. @ playoffs…

    “no decision” for 75 please

  8. Playoffs-

100 on WIN (he keeps his winning streak alive…)

    Thank you.

  9. Playoffs –

Going with 100 on the WIN tonight, please. Thanks!

  10. @ Playoffs – Time to make up some ground on the Reds this evening. Interesting but very appropriate line tonight.

In his last five starts KC has earned a win, you have to go back six starts ago to find a ND and you have to go back eight starts to find a loss. This is a tough play as he has not thrown since that two inning fiasco in Houston on July 29th.

Going to make a gut play here and take 50 on the NO DECISION.

  11. I can’t decide on this one……….not sure if I’ll wager tonight.

  12. @J

That’s kinda what I’m leaning towards as well. I guess I don’t always have to wager 100….though I like being “all in”

  13. piratesfanadvisor.com is currently down for a “redesign.” I have a feeling we have DK to thank for that.

  14. @playoffs

48625 Kwacha on NO DECISION, please

  15. @Playoffs

Let’s go with 100 on the WIN

    Let’s Go Bucs!

  16. Playoffs, 100 on NO DECISION.

I see the bullpen being busy tonight, unfortunately.

  17. Can anybody sum up the roster moves for Biz…..Presley down, AAA pitcher Justin Wilson(?), I believe to the bigs.

    @Playoffs……80 points on the Win……

  18. @Playoffs–

    100 on the NO DECISION…Thanks!

  19. @Playoffs -

    80 on the OVER.

Nice of the Reds to make it 4 in a row for us. Would be even nicer to be 2 back around this time tomorrow.

  20. @Playoffs -

    Long day of work.

Make that 80 on the WIN.

  21. @Jay Jax it is Loche coming up for the night with Presley down.

@Playoffs, I am going to go WIN on this one. He does better at PNC, and he may be mad enough to throw a gem to show management they put the wrong guy in the pen. My bet is for 100 Kennywood Bucks (if there even are such things).

  22. Wow really?

AP down, Jeff Locke up…..This has only been out since about 1PM…my time.

At least. Locke was mentioned as being promoted last night.

  23. Can they trade Presley without putting him through waivers if he’s in the minors?

  24. Playoffs

Please give me 100 fakers on the WIN tonight. KC keeps up the recent string of good starting pitching

  25. Well, it’s taken me hours to refocus after Jandylicious started mentioning threesomes or some such craziness.

@Playoffs: Got to stay optomistic: Give me 100 shuttlecocks on the WIN for KC.

  26. @Jax

Whoa, I missed that……..last night she mentioned needing a DP during the game thread……

  27. At playoffs:
    60 on a no decision.
    Thanks

  28. Chico

That’s a great question. I would think they could trade him without clearing waivers since he’s a minor leaguer now. But I don’t think that’s their intention or that the market would be too hot for him right now

  29. Just was surfing MLBTraderumors for no real reason, but stumbled on a little pole they’re having.

Question was about where the Pirates would finish, that’s neither here or there.

The thing that shocked me was, that the Pirates only need to go 28-25 for 90 wins….

    90-freakin-wins!

That record seems attainable to me……..love it.

    Let’s Go Bucs

  30. Biz…don’t you know better than to park at the casino?

    I’m telling the Dog Man!

    .—————-

Correia will not make it out of the 4th. I am praying Clint comes to his (yeah right) and starts Locke (and Mercer while he’s at it).

Hey! I got one of the two. Still not too late to start Jeffy, Clint!

    Foo

    .

  31. Ryan….I can see stumbling on a pole, but not a poll….lmao

    .

  32. @Lee

Thanks…….I knew it looked messed up

  33. What’s all this about the fan advisor stuff ? I was just catching on the afternoon’s discussion. I just went to the site & the guy has a letter on there just crushing Dejan. What a jabrone.

  34. Who was it that said the Reds would not cool off?

Who knew the Pirates would start a 4 game losing streak for the Reds?

  35. @Playoffs,

these pick’em lines seem much harder to decide. So I did process of elimination.

Been along time since Correia lost. And he wants to prove himself, so I eliminate the Loss option.

Between a Win and a ND seems about a 50/50 proposition. And there’s always a chance the game is tied or the Bucs come from behind. So I will go 40 on the NO DECISION, please.

Thanks again for all of the work on this. Much appreciated. Hope the shine is still on the new job.

  36. Just did some more catch up. BUSTED. Way to go DK, exposing this fraud. Now I can see why this clown is so fired up. What I can’t see is how Coonelly got sucked in by this guy. Oh wait a minute, yes I can.

DK: Always leery of first-timers whose very first post is some bashing thing. That one was more transparent — and dumber — than most.

  37. @Playoffs

A consensus play tonight – I polled the room. I’ll take 50 on No Decision.

  38. I’m going with Milo’s scientific poll (despite the fact he didn’t charge for it), so

    Playoffs—50 on the No Decision.

  39. Rumor has it FC encourages us to participate in the pick ‘em, but says no more videos for now.

  40. 50 on the WIN tonight…but I have now feel for this game at all.

  41. “No.” Where’s the “edit” button??

  42. @playoffs,

    50 on the WIN pls

    Thanks

  43. How many times in one season can Pedro miss a ball barehanded? May see Locke very early.

  44. Well I really wish we could have a do over this half inning, maybe we should scratch the six man rotation idea.

  45. The Pittsburgh Kid strikes with a three run bomb!

Kennedy at 30 pitches in first.

  46. There’s your mulligan KC. Don’t give it up.

  47. Anybody else that has the MLB.TV and/or Audio having issues in not being able to get any games to display or listen to? I was only able to get one game and that one is now over. Sucks, because I only got to watch as the slow Gameday mentioned that Walker hit a three run dinger to right for a 3-2 Bucs lead.

  48. Is anyone else having trouble with MLB.TV tonight?

  49. @Steve Smith

No audio for games are showing up except for the early games. Some foul-up by the tech folks at mlb. Very disappointing.

  50. FM radio is good tonight if you are local, especially since Greg Brown (with Bob Walk) is on the radio side tonight.
Boy th Pirates really turned this game around nicely since that first inning. Even Correia seems to have it together now.
I though with Ian Kennedy on the mound, things looked real bleak.

  51. I hope Hurdle learned his lesson last night by having Garrett Jones not start. All those times Gaby Sanchez couldn’t come through with guys on base, I bet Jones would have.

You have to play the heart of your team everyday, and that means Cutch, Jones and Walker must start every game. Alvarez too, but he needed a reboot to get back to his good hitting ways. There is no reason to ever sit a guy who is hitting consistently like Garrett Jones though. Leave Gaby on the bench until he’s needed.

  52. Nice to see KC locked back in….has rebounded nicely from shaky first.

  53. Thank you, Star!

  54. Second night in a row….Marte Par-Tay! that was a jack…what did we wait so long to bring him up?

  55. DAMMIT!

What a night for the mlb.com audio to be down.

Looks like another deep HR for Marte

  56. Man, Starling hits them farther then I thought he would. He’s a strong dude!

  57. Boy Snider with another rip…now batting .348 for the Bucs

  58. I’m also having the MLB.com issue with the game.

    Hopefully it slears up soon…

  59. Clears up even

  60. They are putting a hurting to Ian Kennedy. It seems that the Pirates are better against team’s aces than their mediocre & rookie pitchers.

  61. Come on Barajas, it’s time to get back on one of your HR binges.

  62. Walks to Jones and Alvarez and Barajas has chance with bases loaded.

  63. Anybody think McKenry would have at least hit the ball with the bases juiced? I do.

  64. And that my friends is why I wish we would see a little more of the Fort…Rod swings right through a change up middle of the plate.

  65. The 4 earned runs off Kennedy already breaks a string of 4 consecutive quality starts for Ian Kennedy.

  66. Marte was delayed in being brought up because his walk to strikeout ratio was unsatisfactory. What a crock that is.

  67. Checking in from Baltimore–as to Presley–any player on the 40 has to go through waivers to be traded now. Majors and minors irrelevant the 40 is what counts.

  68. @JRay

Not to be negative, but to be fair, the Fort had his chance at that pitch last night and grounded into a Double Play with the bases loaded. He cost his chance and Pedro’s chance at it.

  69. I still get temporary braincramps when I hear the name Snider on the radio, thinking “I thought we got rid of Chris Snyder” and then “Oh yeah, TRAVIS Snider!”

Right on, Reading. That walk crap is the stupidest turn this game has taken in years. All these supposedly intelligent baseball minds worrying about a player not walking enough is the most ridiculous thing to come down the pike. I think it started with that ‘moneyball’ book. The real joke is that Oakland, the team the book is based upon, never did anything special. All that worrying about walks got never got them anywhere.

  70. Nice throw by Snider? Or did the runner fall asleep?

I hate not having mlb.tv to watch.

  71. As bad as this offense seemed in April and May, it keeps amazing me that I can *expect* them to battle back from a reasonable deficit. This is not your father’s Oldsmobile.

  72. MLB certainly has no technical difficulties when it comes to taking their payment.

    I want my video, dammit!

  73. Runner fell asleep.

  74. Dare I suggest that Marte was brought to the majors at exactly the right moment in his development? Lay out your evidence to the contrary!

  75. @Officer Mancuso

I second that. Seems like he spent the perfect amount of time in Triple-A, huh?

  76. Two walks this iinning, three to the last five batters, Clint can not give him a long leash tonight.

Giants take early 1-0 lead on Cards.

  77. MLB.TV just worked for me. Fire up the video!

  78. Big patch of rain coming quickly on the radar. Looks like some thunderstorms involved.

  79. Got the pic now.

Unfortunately, bad timing as Arizona scores on the first pitch I see…

  80. Roberto, I agree. On another note, from what I can tell from the online box score, it looks like KC is not getting calls that are borderline low.

  81. I bet on the no-decision but I really want Correia to get thru 6 IP with the lead.

  82. So much for forcing his way back into the rotation. Two-run lead no more.

  83. The weather channel predicts rain and then thunderstorms to hit PNC Park right around 9:20-9:30 pm and to last for about a half hour to 45 minutes..

  84. Every time I think Pedro has it figured out defensively… E5.

  85. Someone at MLB woke up and activated the rest of the games. Idiots. Come on Garrett, untie this thing.

  86. Snider slips a lot. Has anyone checked the quality of his spikes?

  87. PRNW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  88. YeS! Neil Walker does it again!

  89. Walker notches one! Bucs up, 6-4

  90. Walker comes through again and now with 5 RBIs!!! Great shot to the Notch.

  91. What a night for Walker and Snider continues to impress! Nice bounce back after allowing Dbacks to tie it!

  92. 65 RBI for Walker now. Hurdle knew from his first days as manager that Walker was a good RBI man. His insight is paying off well.

  93. Philly fighting back to a 6-3 deficit and still two on in bottom of the 5th.

  94. Still haven’t seen much power, but I’m loving seeing someone get on regularly ahead of Cutch, Jones, and Walker.

  95. 2-3, 2B, HR, 5 RBI, R

    Oh yeah Neil Walker!

  96. Pedro…..uggghhhh

  97. Maybe if Marte makes the big club out of Spring Training, he has 25+ jacks and 80 RBIs right now. Unfortunately, we’ll never know.

  98. I always think they are saying ‘Fat Albert’ when Matt Albers is pitching.
    Hey Hey Hey!

  99. Good thing we took the lead again with that rain coming.

  100. Need at least a sac fly out of Barajas here…

  101. Why did walker go back to 2nd?????

  102. They ought to know that by now, those balls always come right back.

  103. Jones, if you’re gonna get tagged out, do it running TOWARD the plate so the other guy can advance.

  104. Unreal any bounce off that wall except right back to Montero and than Barajas K’s again. Happy to retake lead but should have gotten more.

  105. Horrible end to the inning.

  106. Damn that hard brick wall behind the plate. I think instead of that PNC Park sign, they should have put padding to deadin’ the ball. And Rod is not hot right now unless striking out is hot.

  107. At least it’s an official game now just in case the coming rain drags on too long.
5 full innings IS official, isn’t it?

  108. Jones’ baserunning cost them a run. He should have been at second base when the ball dropped in the gap but was 25 feet shy. Those 25 feet kept Leyva from sending him home. Should be 7-4.

  109. And with KC pitching… LET IT RAIN!

  110. Twentytwo22, do you have any children? If so, I pity them.

  111. Alvarez is struggling and so is Barajas. It is painful to watch them both when they are on this mode. We need to get more runs with KC on the mound.

That was a close play at 1st!

  112. Phillies tied the Braves at 6 after 5, SF up on STL 2-0.

  113. At least we got 6 out of KC. The bullpen better do the job tonight.

  114. Phillies have tied the Braves at 6….Giants lead 2-0 on Cards.

Have a feeling we will need a couple add-on runs have to get to their pen.

  115. OM

90% as good as an ‘A’ for you?

  116. 9 outs from a win from our 6th starter.

  117. Nuns giving the Zoltan sign – Awesome!!

  118. I was just going to say Jordy is about due for his first longball.

  119. Nice shot Jordy! You only need a couple more to out produce good olde Barmes.

  120. #FreeJodyMercer

  121. Mercer will be back on the pine tomorrow night

  122. A Mercer shot for a 7-4 lead. First one in the majors. Way to go Jordy!!

  123. Gogo Cardboard Cutout!

  124. Fudd is our $10 million dollar SS

  125. I distinctly remember Josh Collmenter killing the Bucs last year, as a starter.

  126. Uh, why is KC hitting?

  127. Yeah, Hurdle has screwed up more than one hot hitter this year by not playing them when they were zoned-in. Barajas was on roll when Clint kept benching him, and Mercer was going well with extra-base hits and then never saw an at-bat again for a couple weeks, it seemed.

  128. @22 that might just be the death nail for you buddy (#117). This is a family friendly blog, so you may want to refrain from that stuff.

@DK, you may want to put 22 out of his misery.

  129. @22–I’ll definitely take 9 wins from our 6th starter (and losing 100 points…ugh)!

Remember when 9 wins counted as the staff “ace”?

  130. Gotta run out to do an errand – need all you bloggers to hold off these damn Snakes!

  131. I want the WIN, I am all in

Losing 100 nuggets will make me smile

  132. Are we not allowed to swear on here? Or is it a difference of opinion? I see #117 as a response to #111, which was a response to #109.

Personally, #111 is much worse than #117. Kids?

  133. All right lets get this Goldfish.

  134. These umps blowing calls again, walks, and bad errors on third baseman are making this game too interesting now.

  135. Okay, the error was on Jones, but that was a bad throw by Pedro to make it into the runner’s path.

  136. Lets get the W folks, two down

  137. Twentytwo22, sorry you lead such a sad life. Be well. My question meant to suggest that you might be a toxic parent. Apparently it hit a nerve.

  138. Man, Goldschmidt’s killing the Bucs this whole series…they ought to trade for him in the off-season :)

  139. @Boise, I really don’t know about the swearing on here. I figured it might be a way to get 22 kicked off for the greater good. I’m a former sailor myself, so swearing is engrained in me. That’s usually why I just go all characters at times when I’m mad as hell.

  140. Good grief can’t give teams five outs an inning…just butchering it up in the field…brutal

  141. @OM, do you remember JJ?

    That is toxic

2 cubed has the same reputation

  142. Goldfish & Johnson too. They should have gotten Chris Johnson that night he almost hit for the cycle against us when he was with Houston.

  143. Don’t look now, but the freakin’ Phillies gave up a bases clearing double to ATL and ATL now leads 9-6 in the top of the 6th.

  144. That was cute. Clint Hurdle out fake-arguing for a SS he knows will sit on the bench for the next week because of the high throw.

  145. Sorry, ATL leads in the top of the 7th.

  146. If there was any doubt that Correia was odd man out among Pirate starters, he settled it tonight, and not in his favor.

  147. ATL now 10-6 with another double.

  148. @Steve, I take each post in and of itself; it’s the internet. That said, I know he’s got a reputation, but in the past week, he’s actually had some positive things to say about the Pirates. No reason to call out parenting skills.

  149. Did the Bad News Bears just show up with the rain? They have no hits this inning.

  150. THIS BULLPEN’S TOXIC

LOOK WHAT YOU DID OM YOU MADE THE BULLPEN SAD WITH YOUR POST

  151. Geez, Mercer already sits out a week just because. We may never see him again now.

  152. Pirates may have finally gotten a strike call and Young blows his top at the ump. then gets tossed.

  153. This game is a circus. Unbelievable.

  154. According to the pitch tracker, all 3 pitches to Young were at least very close.

As was the 2-2 pitch to Drew, which would have kept the score 7-4.

  155. Finally we get a call our way.
Oh great, now their best homerun hitter comes in place of Young.

  156. Young goes ballistic over the strikeout. Crowd singing “Take Me Out To The Ballgame” in a driving rainstorm. Lightning over the city. Wow.

  157. Maybe they will just keep tossing players out of the game and the Pirates win by default.

  158. Upton tossed as well…

  159. Haha. Young gets ejected. And then Upton gets thrown out in the dugout before going out to the field.

  160. Was it raining hard enough in that inning to think that some of the 3 errors were caused by the rain?

  161. @Roberto -

I was surprised, especially with the lightning, that they kept playing.

Not sure the 2nd Jones error could be attributed to the rain, but Pedro’s throw and Mercer’s throw, maybe.

  162. Got to give Kevin Correia credit: from the 2nd batter on, when Pedro screwed up that bunt that they graciously ruled a base hit, the Pirates have played terrible defense all night. There were extra guys on all night from plays that should have made, including Mercer at short early on and Walker not getting that double play. This might be Pedro’s worst night of the year in the field, to go with his 2 Ks.

    Defense, defense, defense!

  163. @Roberto, maybe Jones error was rain related, he seemed to maybe slip slightly then kneed the ball or something. Pedro’s tailed on him to Jones and went into the runner’s path. Jordy’s just looked like a high throw all the way, and Jones was slightly in the air as the runner hit the bag.

  164. Upton tossed for throwing a helmet toward the umpire

  165. Garrett Jones defense tonight proved he is the best right fielder on the team.

  166. No. 32 Lincoln coming in.

  167. Were getting tons of lightning here in Plum Boro, but very little rain, if any. Maybe lightning scared Mercer into making a high throw? It’s made me jump several times while I was reaching to close windows.

  168. Gabby Sanchez in at 1st for defense.

Qualls in to pitch the 8th. I would have rather Grilli got back on the horse.

  169. @Groat — Me too, Grilli’s still the man.

  170. I want to say before Qualls throws a pitch that I am not confident in him.

    Prove me wrong, Chad!!!

  171. I am impressed with Qualls.

  172. Qualls lollygaggin

  173. Goodness gracious…are you kidding me….this is absurd are we trying to give the game away? Qualls what is he thinking?

  174. Defense, defense, defense!!!

The defense keeps trying to give this game away!!! And that’s our GOOD defender!

  175. @Groat

Not so fast on that defensive judgement, lol.

  176. @PLR -

Game looked pretty wet on my screen, and I can definitely see a little rain causing a slight slip in grip that could lead to a high throw.

  177. Bucs fielding is atrocious tonight.

  178. Qualls gets the ground balls like he’s supposed to, and has pitched several scoreless innings already. I don’t care about his past, just what he does for the Pirates.

  179. Can the first basemen on this team wake the Hell up. No excuse for that. if he runs hard to the bag, he doesn’t have to worry about the pitcher being late. The pitcher should have also run harder to realize his first baseman needed some help on the play. Mental mistakes.

  180. I’m not sold on Gaby Sanchez’s winning efforts. He plays like he’
s still on a last place team.

  181. Radio guys are disagreeing about that play.

Greg Brown says that that should have been a Sanchez play by himself the whole way. Bob Walk says that Sanchez thought that it should have been an underhand pitch to Qualls, but when he looked up he thought Qualls couldn’t get there, so he tried to go himself.

  182. @ Steve – 181

Dick Stuart would have had made that play

  183. Last night all over again. Come on Man!

  184. Mr. Strangeglove would have definitely made that play!! {if he was paying attention!}

  185. 3 walks have come around to score for them and now one error comes around to score.

  186. Hope they keep hitting it to Walker… He’s the only infielder I feel confidence in right now.

  187. Greg Brown insists that Bob Walk will agree with him once he sees the replay.

  188. Bullpen will hold.

    Probably.

Man, WHYGAVS is gonna be maaaaddddd tonight…

  189. Gave away a run…another inning guying extra outs away…just sloppy….just get the game to Hammer.

  190. ATL up now 12-6 in the bottom of the 8th, so that game is likely over.

  191. Not sure why we keep our relievers in for the entire inning. Mix and match. Bring in Hughes to get the last out. Heck, Bring in the Hammer for a 4 out save.

  192. Never mind.

  193. Get into the barn!

  194. Whew….even pop ups are almost dropped….now let’s get a run or two here.

  195. I agree with Bob Walk: Sanchez should have underhanded it over the bag, and Qualls would have sped up and caught it.

I will repeat now that a run has scored——I have no confidence in Qualls. Even after the mess up at 1st, he gave up a big 2-out hit to score the run.

  196. 7-0 SF over the Redbirds though, so hopefully that holds up.

  197. Beat em Bucs

Pennant races, its early, you folks have to lighten up

    We’re gonna do it

  198. Need this W. Can’t let it slip away two nights in a row.

  199. @ Groat2Maz2Strangeglove – 186

LOL – I forgot about the paying attention part about Big Stu

  200. It’s good they are beating the Cradinals, but SF is a wild card team and we need them to lose too.

  201. Giants up 7-0 on Cards have a chance to move within 2.5 games of Reds and 3.5 games up in WC standings if we can finish this off.

  202. Hiit a homer, Jordy!

  203. My nominee for the guy who should have “stood in bed” tonight——Pedro Alvarez. His glove has been embarrassing. 0 – 3 at the plate, twice with runners in scoring position.

  204. Let’s go Hammer – 1, 2, 3 with no hiccups!!

  205. SF is leading their division at the moment. They only end up as a WC if the Dodgers or Dbacks catch them… And STL is closer right now than either of those teams.

Plus I fear STL going on a long winning streak a lot more than any of the other WC teams.

I’ll take a SF win right now, even if long term it doesn’t end up being the best. Someone’s got to win.

  206. Alright Hanny…let’s have a nice, easy, 1-2-3 inning…

(I feel like Bob Barker when I say that)

  207. @ Groat2Maz2Strangeglove – 205

I agree – Pedro looks like he is in some kind of foggy state.

  208. Johhny Ray III,

I still refuse to even consider that Wild Card crap!

I’m playing to win the Division——I’ll worry about that stupid play-in game only in the last two weeks. I do NOT want to be involved in a 1-game farce. That’s not how baseball works!

  209. @Groat -

And sadly, they can’t leave him out of the lineup, because any night may be the night when Pedro jacks 2 out.

  210. If there’s anything about Hanny that I know for sure, it’s that he’s about to make me VERY NERVOUS.

  211. Come on Hammer! Put the final nail in this one and get the save.

  212. Devil Dog,

I agree with you. As bad as he is at times, Pedro needs to play every night.

Hanrahan has figured out how to tighten up the Pirate defense . . . . . don’t let the other team hit it!!!

  213. Thank you Hammer for ending this one.

  214. TWO games out in the loss column!!!!!

  215. We had em aaaaaaallllllll the way!!

  216. Hammer on the money tonight!

    Raise it high!

  217. BOOM RAISE IT

Correia gets the win and makes naysayers out of all of us :) good for him

  218. Hard fought, more like hard fought against themselves with the defense tonight. But a win is a win. Nice home run hitting by the young guys tonight though, with Jordy making the difference with his first homer and RBI.

  219. Good morning, Good afternoon, Good night!

Behind Neil Walker’s 5 RBI’s and the Hammer shutting the door the Pirates escape with a 7-6 victory in game three of the four game set and there was noooooooo doubt about it.

The Bucs will go for the series win tomorrow afternoon when Wandy Rodriguez takes the mound for the Bucs.

  220. Either Kevin Correia is very good . . . . or he is very lucky! Seven wins in a row.

    Either way, I’ll take it!

    ______

4 errors tonight, and it could have been 7!

  221. Thank you Joel Hanrahan. You were at your best when your team needed you the most.

Deja vu from yesterday except the Pirates won. We’ll take it.

  222. Just something to chew on tonight. Pirates record 63-47. Yankees record 63-46.

  223. I have been looking over Wandy’s career and by-season stats, and he has a WAY better stats and ERA in day games. He’s like a pitching version of Pedro Alvarez in day games.

  224. Correia actually had a quality start again. it was on the lowest side of one, but still a quality start with 3 earned runs in 6 innings.

  225. Dejan’s article is up for tomorrow on the reporters decathlon and he notes that Doc Emrick flashed the Zoltan at the water polo match for the Pirates.

  226. That’s a Lanny Fratterre quality start.

I agree with Steve Blass. A quality start for him is 3 runs in 7 innings, or 2 runs in 6.

  227. 63-47, 52 games remaining.
    18-34 needed for 81-81.
    26-26 gives 89-73.

2.5 behind CIN for the division.

0.5 behind ATL for the home WC.

3 up on STL for the road WC (trailing SF 7-0 B7)
4.5 up on LAD (leading COL 3-2 B1)
    7.5 up on ARI

    Everyone else 10+ back and/or under .500.

  228. I agree with Blass too, but the officially recognized stat is ’3 earned runs or less in at least least 6 innings’.

The only stat though that I think is a real joke is the ‘indifference’ instead of ‘stolen base’. If a guy moves to the next base on his own, its a stolen base. This ‘indifference’ thing is illogical.
How do you know there is indifference unless you attempt to steal the base? You must make the attempt to steal it first. They don’t just give it to you.

  229. The WIN…wins tonight. DOUBLE DOWN THURSDAY tomorrow!!

  230. @ Pig Legs — totally agree. It’s not like the dude’s walking to 2nd base completely unchecked. THAT would be indifference, and it would probably be cheating.

  231. @Playoffs–what’s the prize for biggest loser? I mean, it’s just like winning except opposite, right? :) haha I gotta get positive before the end of the season…

  232. @Boise

I need to start losing more since your catching up to me. I cannot have that happen.

  233. Mr. Piggy,

The quality start was discontinued as an official stat of baseball about 6-7 years ago. Lanny just kept bring it up because he liked it.

If the 1st baseman plays behind the runner, and/or neither the 2nd baseman nor shortstop move from their defense positions to cover 2nd, it’s pretty obvious that the defense is not trying to get the runner out. Ergo “defensive indifference”——the defense wasn’t trying to stop him from taking the base. “It’s yours if you want it.”

  234. @Boise

Either a Lyle Overbay autographed baseball or a pamphlet about problem gambling. Choice goes to the winner.

  235. @Playoffs

Now I definitely need to finish in last.

  236. That still makes no difference. Unless the runner is told go to the next base, we wont stop you, and then he goes and they don’t stop him, he has attempted to steal it, and has stolen it.

Think of it this way. If someone breaks into my house and steals a dead chicken out of my freezer, and then I say “well, I didn’t want that chicken anyway, and if someone wants to come into my house uninvited and take it, I don’t mind, it doesn’t take away the fact that the person broke & entered, and left with a dead chicken that wasn’t his. He still stole it.

  237. The defense is caught offguard and has no way to get the runner out in those instance. You can’t tell me that if the pitcher was standing by the base holding ther ball when runner attempted to move up, that he wouldn’t reach out and tag him out.
They were just so off-guard that th runner easily advances. They only make no attempt to stop him because they have no way of stopping him. It’s still stolen.

  238. The major stat services and publications still tabulate quality starts, and most fantasy baseball leagues that I have been a part of continue to use it. My original league has used it since 1987.

It’s a much more informative statistic than, say, ‘won-loss record’ for a pitcher. (Just because someone was a pitcher of record when his team scored the winning run tells me nothing about how well a pitcher pitched). Quality start gives me a ton of information without even seeing the box score.

  239. What an ugly, ugly game for such a pretty win. Let’s not look like that tomorrow, eh boys?! Bring out some magic Wandy…

  240. Mr. Piggy,

You sound like you played ball.
I can tell/you can tell if the infielders are going to give you the base. To stop a steal the middle infielders play closer to the bag to take a throw, almost at doubleplay depth. The 1st baseman holds the runner on.

When the 1st baseman, 2nd baseman, and shortstop are all back visibly, and the catcher doesn’t even come out of his crouch to throw the ball to 2nd, the team is not trying to get the runner out. They are GIVING him the base if he wants it.

You CAN’T STEAL what someone is already GIVING YOU FOR FREE. If you take your chicken out of your house and put it on a chair by the sidewalk, with a sign that says “Free,” it’s not stealing.

  241. But the act of advancing to the next base happens. So it’s stolen. It doesn’t matter how the other team feels about it, whether they were indifferent or not, the runner advances by taking the base. Hence he ‘stole’ it.

Just because the other team shows no care about him advancing has no bearing on his advancement of a base that he did earn. If he attempts to steal it, it doesn’t matter that the other team felt okay with him attempting to steal and don’t try to stop him. He was successful in attempting to steal. If you are successful in attempting to steal something, you’ve stolen it. Regardless of how the victim feels or felt about it.

They are not going through the trouble to try to stop him like you say, but only because it is inconvenent and they can’t stop him without risking throwing the ball away or screwing up what the pitcher is trying to do with the batter. I still say if the pitcher had the ball and was standing by the bag he would attempt to stop him since he could easily tag him out. It’s convenience being on the other foot now. So if he did tag him out, would you say that the runner advanced on ‘indifference’ but the team changed their mind and had ‘difference’? So he is tagged out on ‘difference’?
No, you would say ‘caught stealing’.

I didn’t put my chicken on a chair and say free please take. If I had done that it wouldn’t have be stolen. The perpetrator had to come in my house and take it in order to find out how I felt about him taking it. He had to attempt to steal it in order to find out that I’m okay with it. His attempt was successful.

Besides, they don’t change stats anyway after the fact. Have they gone back and taken away all of Lou Brock’s stolen bases where the opposition didn’t make an attempt to stop him? no. It would change the whole recordbook. So now you have to have ‘modern’ stolen bases and ‘old era’ stolen bases if you are going to be consistent.

  242. Yikes what are you doing DK…this was yesterday’s thread and you put today’s line up in it! DO the Limeys have you all back asswards?

  243. Where is everybody? DK has us all confused today.
