  1. tdb1977 says:

Cannot wait to head down to the game tonight. Really looking towards a Bucs win to help push the Dodgers further behind. Will be located approximately 3 boxes down from FC’s box. I’ll try not to bring up the Pirates Fan Advisor thingy or the lack of self control with a bottle if I see him wondering the hallways. Too bad I will be looking directly down the first base line with a clear shot of the Pirate’s Charity sign. Would be nice to see someone take a ball deep and long, just slightly foul to knock it out for once and for all. Beat ‘em Bucs tonight.

  2. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Today’s MULTI-LINE MONDAY OVER / UNDER (always for fun of course)

    LINE #1
Total Combined Hits + Walks + Runs Scored + RBI’s by Clint Barmes in Tonight’s Game
    Line is 1.5

    LINE #2
Total Innings Pitched by the Pirates Bullpen in Tonight’s Game
    Line is 2.75
(If the bullpen pitches 3 innings or more the OVER wins, anything less the UNDER wins)

  3. tdb1977 says:

I’ll take 100 on the under for line 1 and 100 on the under for line 2.

  4. crkkid says:

    @ playoffs

Let me have 100 units on the over for line #1 and 50 units on the over for line #2.

  5. Bizrow says:

Playoffs, 100 OVAH for line 1, 100 UNDAH for line 2.

    As always

These darn lines though, just give me more stuff to worry about…..

  6. Drew71 says:

    Arriba and tudsbee77,

Just post for us EVERYthing that happens at the game.

And I don’t care where you park. Just don’t jaywalk.

  7. Jandy says:

    and don’t grind your teeth!!!!

  8. Playoffs by 2012 says:

By the way, I will update the standings this evening. Thanks to all for the patience.

  9. Leefoo says:

Tudsbee and Arriba….don’t forget that drinking game….esp if we’re losing or Clint bunts with our cleanup hitter!

    Take the T, too.

    Sudsy Foo

    Jandy……….she got in somehow………pls help!!!!

  10. Jandy says:

Lee, quick, go out the back too, and go hide at James’ Jewelers…while you’re there, buy her a nice “bauble” to kiss and make up!

  11. Bizrow says:

@Playoffs, no the thanks go all to you

  12. Kevin says:

    Playoffs –

Please may I have 100 on the OVER for Line 2. Thanks as always

  13. Bizrow says:

More shootings, now in College Station Texas

WTH is going on in this world?

  14. bman says:

Line 1: 40 on the OVER
Line 2: 80 on the OVER

  15. Cmat0829 says:

Can I please have 100 FUs on the over for line one and on the under for line 2. Let’s go bucs.

  16. Drew71 says:

Here’s hoping the Pirates harang this one-armed fat man.

  17. RalphM says:

In case you haven’t seen this catch yet, here is a play involving 3(!) former Pirates…

  18. Drew71 says:

    Tudsbee – Enjoy the game.

    But avoid Arriba. He mewls.

  19. Jandy says:

Biz, #13, I don’t begin to know, but it sure is scary, eh?

  20. Jandy says:

Drew is at it again! lol

  21. Leefoo says:

RalphM….Rajai saved our former reliever some runs…lol

  22. Leefoo says:

Rule 5 draft pick Gustavo Nunez will begin a rehab assignment with the GCL Pirates today. He has missed the whole season recovering from ankle surgery, and the pins inserted in the ankle eventually became an irritant and set back his recovery.

He has 20 days of rehab before he must be activated. If he experiences a setback, though, the Pirates can stop the rehab assignment. He could join the club when rosters expand in September, allowing the Pirates to keep him on their active roster through the end of the season and retaining him for future years.

Here’s some info….base stealer and Southern League All Star

  23. Jandy says:

    Ralph M, that’s a helluva catch!

  24. Bizrow says:

I don’t know if Nunez can accrue enough time on the Major League roster to be retained, I thought someone, JAL maybe, posted the rules about it and it appeared to be dicey as to whether or not he could do it.

    I’ve been wrong before though….

  25. pattonbb says:

    Playoffs –

    100 units on BOTH OVERS.

  26. Drew71 says:

I wonder if Dejan’s ship has made it to the North Sea yet.

And if he’s in steerage, how would he know?

Do you think Leonardo is drawing a picture of him?

    Or is that too disturbing?

DK: In Charlotte. EYE am headed home.

  27. JaxBuc says:

Tonight’s prediction: An extra inning win with Barmes hitting a solo shot in the 11th to make a winner out of Qualls, means the OVER wins for both lines.

@Playoffs: 100 on the OVER both, please

  28. Jay Jax Fl via New Castle says:

100 on the over on both please…..thanks……….Go Lumber Co.

  29. radio wave says:

    At playoffs:
    100 over on line 1
    100 under line 2

  30. Leefoo says:

Biz…I’m pretty sure the DL counts as service time. He is OURS until we move him.

DK: It counts, as long as it’s the major-league disabled list.

  31. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Line 1: 100 UNDER

    Line 2: 100 OVER

  32. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Can you please change my line 1 to 100 OVER

    thanks in advance

  33. Karen22 says:

Line 1: 100 on the OVER
Line 2: 100 on the UNDER

    Merci beaucoup!

  34. Drew71 says:

Welcome back, Dejan. Maybe you can post the Leonardo drawing tomorrow.

I’d like to say I behaved in your absence.

    But I can’t.

PS – I’ll let the EYE thingee go (just this once) because at least you don’t use stinking Emoticons.

  35. Drew71 says:

    Oh. One more thing.

How about a column tomorrow about the Pirates’ collapse.

  36. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Would like to see Gabby do something, but I sure do like what Snider has brought to the table.

  37. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Not much longer DK… travels.

  38. Milo Hamilton says:

Burnett is now starting Thursday & McDonald has been pushed back to Friday in St. Louis.

  39. Drew71 says:

I see Ryan has seen the drawing.

(Even EYE can’t believe I wrote that.)

  40. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

From ESPNLA “The Dodgers have won 12 of their last 14 meetings with the Pirates heading into Monday night’s opener of a four-game set at PNC Park.”

Ruh-Roe………don’t like the sound of that at all.

  41. JRay3 says:

@ Playoffs – Greetings from steamy Dallas. Just landed here and wanted to get in on multi-line Monday. I see we are piggy backing on the feel good story Clint Barmes today.

If you take a look at the month of August for Clint Barmes you will see tonight’s line is a virtual toss up. He’s gone over three times and under four times this month. He had a career day yesterday and I think that means he is headed back to his mean.

Line 1 – I will take 50 in the UNDER

Line 2 – I like Jeff Karstens and think he pitches more than 6 tonight….so with that
I will take 75 on the UNDER.

    Thanks and Let’s go Bucs!

  42. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Barmes is 4-9 with a HR against Harang….

Did I mention change my line 1 to 100 OVER?

  43. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Thanks for the update…….

  44. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    @ Drew

EYE have no idea what you are talking about.

  45. Stennettorian says:

Please give me the under and 75 on both lines tonight.

  46. NMR says:

I tried to get everyone on the Chase Headley train, Dejan.

Apparently no love for any more trade deadline talk.

Fantastic job all around for the last few weeks, by the way. Truly a prolific body of work.

DK: Thanks! Gotta go. Plane taking off from CLT.

  47. Milo Hamilton says:

Frankly, McDonald should be pushed back to Sarasota against the Orioles.

  48. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Sarasota is awesome………but I think he just needs a few extra days off…….not a demotion

  49. Milo Hamilton says:

    He’s soff.

  50. Milo Hamilton says:

I like Sarasota too, except I’ll never go to that idiot dog track again.

  51. jeffsbar says:

    Line 1 – 100 on the OVER
    Line 2 – 100 on the UNDER

    Thank you.

  52. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    No, no…….must avoid the track!!

I used to live 30 minutes south of Sarasota……..beautiful area.

  53. DemonDachshund says:

I’m all for getting Headley, but… Where would he play? Who does NH look at replacing as a starter?

    1B – Jones/Sanchez
    RF – Snider/Tabata
    3B – Pedro
    LF – Marte

Only thing I could see happening there is Jones moved out for someone with more YoC and Headley or Pedro moved to 1B. Otherwise, I don’t see the FO seeing a need for a move. I wouldn’t expect any help beyond the bullpen.

  54. Hal Smith says:

Line #1 How about 50 on the under and hope I’m wrong.

Line #2 50 on the over and also hope I’m wrong.

    Thanks for doing this.

  55. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

That’s the issue I’ve had with Headley as well.

    Where do you put him?

His production is well worth a look though, especially after what he did this weekend at PNC.

I think the best fit would be at 1st. Keep Pedro at 3B, Jones in RF, Headley at 1B.

  56. NMR says:

I, too, feel the position change would’ve been a deterant in trading for Headley.

I believe Dejan has previously insinuated he could go back to playing outfield, which he has done before in the majors.

I just don’t know how easy something like that can be done mid-season. I think we were all sick of the Drew Sutton/Josh Harrison outfields, and I’ve read a couple places that Headley was fairly bad out there while he lasted.

It think I tend to lean towards making the trade just from a pure numbers standpoint, but I really hate puting defense at little or no value. I do think Headley would blow up outside of Petco, though. 30 HR production wouldn’t surprise me. I wouldn’t be opposed to revisiting the talks this offseason with the understanding Pedro would move to 1st for something like Taillon, Josh Bell, and a 10-15 range prospect.

  57. nate83 says:

Line 1: 50 on the over
Line 2: 50 on the under

  58. DemonDachshund says:

    @Ryan –

Prior to getting Snider, I thought Headley could play RF. He played LF for the Padres when he first came up, though supposedly poorly. But really, is Jones any better out there?

Now though, I can’t see NH spending the resources to get Headley when it means committing guys like Snider and Tabata to the bench.

  59. Boise Bucco says:

Line 1: 100 OVER (I think BARRRRRMMMMMEEEESSSSSS is heating up)
    Line 2: 100 UNDER

    Thanks, and GO BUCS!!

  60. DemonDachshund says:

    @Playoffs –

100 on the OVER on line 1. (Did I just bet on Barmes?)
100 on the UNDER on line 2.

  61. cosmo says:

    @ Playoffs

line 1 100 on the over

line 2 50 on the over

    thanks as always

  62. Boise Bucco says:

Lately I’ve been “betting” the under on these guys, it’s not as fun…even though I make fun and shake my fist every time I say BAAAARRRRRNNNNNEEESSSSS I really do like the guy and I hope that he goes 5-5 with 5 jacks every game. Plus it really is nice to have him at short–nothing’s getting by him. So it’s more fun to “bet” the over.

  63. AJS says:

Big series here against the Dodgers. And I’m sorry if I am not buying into Dejan’s current resiliance assertion.

This team has looked worse and worse since the ASG. Drop a couple at home vs the Cubs. Go to Chi-town and witness that god awful blow up by Bedard. Innings like that happen, no big deal. Then you come home and drop 2 to the Snakes and in one of the wins you some how manage to win despite 4 errors. But those things happen, no big deal. Then you drop 2 of 3 to the Padres and blow a 6 run lead in the first game and total 2 hits in the next game. By some miracle you return the favor and overcome a 5 run deficit to take the 3rd game despite the fact the third baseman was asleep for half the game.

Spread these occurences out over the course of 162 games and its no big deal. Plop them all down in a 3 week span and it spells trouble.

50ish games left and a 6 man rotation for part of that means less than 10 starts for each pitcher. Can’t throw AJ every day and some days he is going to take an L. Bedard and JMac have got to battle back. REALLY need JMac to get sharp. Maybe he skips a start.

  64. dcpinpgh says:

line 1 – hundred on the under

    line 2 – 75 on the over

  65. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

No, Jones is terrible out there (swan dive)

I agree with NMR, I don’t know about doing the switch in mid-season.

@NMR-The price tag in the offseason may be less. Just like any other business, they jack the prices up when the demand is higher.

I really have no clue what SD is doing over there, they just extended Mark Kotsay for crying out loud!

I’m usually on the mindset that if you’re going to rebuid and sell, freakin rebuild and sell.

Doesn’t mean dump EVERYBODY if you have a few that are worth hanging on to, but c’mon

  66. Boise Bucco says:

Diving a little deeper into Harang’s record…he’s 7-7 on the year, but the Dodgers are 10-12 in games in which he has pitched. Harang’s averaging 5.9 innings-pitched per game, not great but not terrible. He’s not really a high-strikeout pitcher, although he’s got a 13 K game this year against the Padres, to go with a 0 K game against the Angels. Interestingly enough, he pitched 6 innings in both games, and got no-decisions in both. Harang’s last game on the East Coast was a 7-6 win over the Mets on July 20. He went 5 innings, gave up 3 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits and struck out 5 with 3 walks.

  67. Bizrow says:

We have to face Headley next week, hopefully he will get the flu or something

Just wondering if the club will pay the Legend 4-4.5 million next year?

With Barmes line, hits, walks and runs, a double and a run pays the over.

Forgot though that he seldom walks

That Playoffs is one clever fellow

  68. Bizrow says:

    At Yahoo

    Dejan’s Lunatics (ID# 362238)

    Passwword is 1203

    Still seats available

Dejans Lunatic Nation stands at 223 locations

    Sign in, you lurkers ;-)

  69. pants-n-at says:

    @ playofs

I’ll take 100 on the over on both!

  70. NMR says:

I’m not so sure trading Headley would be a “selling” move IF you could get two for one. I think I said in the last thread that it would only make sense for SD to want a player like Marte who is MLB ready because they just extended Quentin and Street. Getting Marte and Lincoln would almost surely make their team better right now.

Then again, no specifics were made about that “top 5 prospect” request, so who knows what they’re thinking.

I had that thought regarding Jones and arbitration when they traded for Sanchez.

I think Jones is a steal at that much, even for a platoon player. Give Gabby a year to figure it out before deciding to extend Jones or let him walk.

  71. Curt says:

    100 on the UNDER

    100 on the OVER

  72. Bizrow says:

I just read Dejan’s column, that guy is outstanding.

I would like to suggest we add Lisa from London as an honorary member of the Lunatic Nation.

    Separate category of course

Without her, Dejan might still be trying to get home, well he’s still on the way, but he survived London?

@NMR, I don’t know, PBC spending that much for a platoon player?

Legend has had a nice season so far though, just sayin

  73. The Gunner says:

I agree with Milo on JMac — Sarasota works for me. Every time he pitches now, it is pretty much a loss. Apparently, he isn’t thick skinned enough.

Remember folks, we are in a pennant race / this isn’t the time for experimentation like it used to be around here so don’t experiment with James.

Also, the Buccos better get their swagger back tonight and beat these freakin Brooklyn Bums!!!

  74. Milo Hamilton says:

How are they ever find time to fit the game in around this auction ?

  75. Chico says:

Line 1: 100 on the under
Line 2: 100 on the under

  76. RobertoForever says:

Thanks for keeping this up. Its a long season, and you have been solid. Much appreciated.

Line 1 – Barmes has really heated up. In the period covering his last 10 starts he is batting .316, OPS of .797 and 2 BB’s vs 8 K’s. I think he is regressing to the mean – his career mean. But its hardly a lock. So I will go 50 on the OVER.

Line 2 – Karstens has been pretty solid, and you put the line right at the quality start line. The Dodgers are not an average team, so I guess I go the OVER for 75 and count on our solidfying bullpen to put in those 3+ innings.

    Beat em Bucs!

  77. manny _sanguine says:

    Line one 50 UNDER
    Line two 50 OVER

  78. Thundercrack says:

Can someone offer up some proof that JMac is thin-skinned or that he is soft?

    Please expound on those theories.

And please explain how he can be so darn good in the first half…then turn into a soft, thin skinned pitcher so quickly.

  79. Milo Hamilton says:

I think you just did. I knew you’d come around.

  80. Thundercrack says:

No Milo. I didn’t come around.
I want to know why some people think these things? How can you tell? How come it isn’t that he just isn’t pitching good enough?

  81. Milo Hamilton says:

    OK, he just stinks then.

  82. JRay3 says:

Just an FYI for any out of town Bucs fans the game tonight is the free game of the day, do not know if that has been mentioned.

    Go Bucs!

  83. JRay3 says:

What? Just when I was about to write how refreshing it is to see a 1-2-3 inning, we witness that lapse, Jones has to get to that ball.

  84. Reading says:

    Ridiculous Bush-League play! Ballgame!

  85. Milo Hamilton says:

    Extra out #1.

  86. JRay3 says:

Way to bear down Jeff! Pitches 1 1/3 in the first.

  87. Playoffs by 2012 says:

    1) Wandy Rodriguez never sits with the other starters in the dugout. Wonder why that is?

    2) Is Reading serious or just the new neck-bearded troll I shouldn’t bother listening to?

  88. Milo Hamilton says:

I heard an interview with the Astros play by play man (not Milo) after the trade & he said Wandy really likes to keep to himself. When they asked him if he knew anyone on the Pirates, he didn’t even know Barmes’ name.

  89. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Milo, thank you for the info. That makes sense now. I figured it was one of the following:
    a) He’s a pr!ck
    b) He has bad breath
    c) He’s a pr!ck with bad breath
    d) He likes to keep to himself

  90. Milo Hamilton says:

    Or, he’s soff.

  91. JRay3 says:

Wow that was quick work turned in by Karstens in the second. Boy if there was ever a team in need of a starter putting in a gem of a performance it is us and Jeff is more than capable when on.

  92. pattonbb says:

    out…but we’ll take it.

  93. Reading says:

Playoffs, come on Man! I’ve been here since the old PG Days from Day One. Obviously kidding.

  94. Reading says:

With Karstens dealing fast, the auction might have been better scheduled yesterday.

  95. Milo Hamilton says:

I’ll bid $350 for the Macy’s shopping spree with Nick Leyva.

  96. Reading says:

No biggie. Just one. Strong throw by Jones to second.

  97. JMB says:

    Great catch Jonesie!

  98. JRay3 says:

That might be a game saving catch by Jones…showed a willingness to give up the body and went all out, maybe will provide a spark.

  99. Reading says:

First wall catch in a while. Great play by Jones!!

  100. pattonbb says:

That makes up for the booted ball earlier……my opinion.

  101. Reading says:

Don’t care how many times Marte walks or strikes out. Awesome that he goes up there to hit the ball!

  102. Reading says:

    Need a jack here.

  103. Reading says:

  104. Milo Hamilton says:

I think Garrett Jones has put a foot down.

  105. JRay3 says:

@ pattonbb – That 2 RBI hit by Jones makes up for the booted ball….in my opinion!

    Right back in it!

  106. The Gunner says:

Garrett comes thru again!!! Way to go, my man!!

  107. Milo Hamilton says:

Karstens just did what Harang couldn’t do after his team scored.

  108. pattonbb says:

I know he looks bad in the field sometimes, but Jones goes all out, all of the time. I’ll take that.

  109. Dan1283 says:

    Poll for the asylum:

If Garrett Jones were a free agent at the end of the season, what kind of a contract do you think he could realistically command? What is his market value?

  110. JAL says:

There were some questions earlier on Nunez–if he come off the DL and spends Sept. on the roster then the Pirates still would have to keep him on the 25 the first two months of next season, give or take a couple of days.

  111. Parrothead01 says:

How can Barmes, who never draws a walk, take so many first pitch fastballs for strikes. If your not going to walk, you should step in ready to hit.

  112. cosmo says:

    @ Dan 1283 # 110

Considering that people were comparing Jones’ numbers with those of Hunter Pence’s
up to the trade deadline, at least 10 mil. lol. Realistically in todays market 4-5 mil.

  113. Milo Hamilton says:

Any truth to the rumor that they’re actually auctioning off Frank Coonelly tonight ?

  114. Milo Hamilton says:

Boy those veteran deadline acquisitions can be so important in a pennant race.

  115. The Gunner says:

    @ Milo – 114

Who would want him? He’s nothing but an empty suit.

  116. bobhasis says:

Terrific observation. That thought occured to in his last AB – a K

  117. Milo Hamilton says:

Yet another poor performance by a starter.

  118. The Gunner says:

    @ Milo – 118

The Bucs need to add some pitching real bad / the ones we have are really running out of gas

  119. Drew71 says:

Milo – My wife said the same thing this weekend.

I’m sorry. Really. Very very sorry.

    I won’t do it again.

At least until the next time.

  120. Milo Hamilton says:

    Try the veal.

  121. Reading says:

Pedro’s slumps seem to coincide with him stepping out of the box and taking that slow practice swing between pitches. Also, why did we trade for Sanchez again- to set a record for double plays hit into?

  122. twentytwo22 says:

Disgusting homestand so far. They are lying down to teams they are better than. No swagger at all. They look intimidated.

  123. Chuck H says:

Can anyone tell me why we have Gabby Sanchez in our lineup? He is not only an automatic out, but an auto two outs. We have better players sitting on the bench. It shouldn’t take long to figure out that he has to go.

  124. Naje says:

DK, the two guys you’ve touted the most here, Alvarez and Karstens, haven’t really responded to their backs–and, more importantly, their teams’ backs–being up against a bit of a wall. Alvarez’ last home run? Karstens last shut-down performance?

On the other hand, when was Alvarez’ last “he lives for these moments” moment? How about Alvarez’ last 2K+ game? Or Karstens’ last quality start?

I can count on maybe three fingers the number of those big moments from Alvarez… in his 2+ year career. It is NOT time to give the guy the #4 spot in the order…he has to earn it… now, and for the future. Striking out at a rate of 1.2 Ks per game. Last home run (and from your blog entry this morning, “he’s a home run hitter”) was more than 20 days ago.

Slumps are one thing… I’m tired of the lack of contribution… the caught looking Ks… the lack of putting a ball in play… the 18 errors in 102 games.

  125. Milo Hamilton says:

But Chuck, stop focusing so much on 2012. It’s about years of control.

  126. DemonDachshund says:

Terrific, Gaby will be grounding into DPs for years to come!

  127. Reading says:

Wow, a walk by J-Hay. Marte time!

  128. JMB says:

That was a smash –give him the hit!

  129. Reading says:

That was blistered. Need a jack

  130. Milo Hamilton says:

Neil Walker is not going to be allowed to bat left handed in these kind of situations. Hitting only .252 with no homers & 5 extra base hits vs. lefties.

  131. JMB says:

    Choate saved his own life!

  132. Reading says:

Tough one there. Would have gotten one in.

  133. DemonDachshund says:

Theme of the last week seems to be “Players who were rumored to be Pirate trade deadline acquisitions killing the Pirates.”

    Drew, Headley, Victorino, Choate…

  134. Milo Hamilton says:

Good thing we don’t play the Giants anymore.

  135. DemonDachshund says:

    @Milo –

    At least not until October.

  136. Chico says:

Time for mcCutchen to break out of his funk next inning. He’s the difference between our August and our June/July.

  137. Milo Hamilton says:

I seriously doubt you have to worry about that.

  138. Milo Hamilton says:

Chances the score’s still 4-2 the next time we bat ?

  139. Reading says:

    Timely drilling of Ethier there.

  140. DemonDachshund says:

    @Milo –

I’d be more than happy to have Pence light the Bucs up in October, since it would mean the Bucs would be playing in October.

  141. DemonDachshund says:

I have to admit, I’m really tempted to switch over to the Dodger broadcast right now.

Sadly, I don’t have $4K sitting around to throw at the things they’re trying to convince me to buy.

  142. Reading says:

    Might be Lincoln time.

  143. Boise Bucco says:

So this walk, HBP, walk inning has me thinking about Jared Hughes right now…is it that Juan Cruz didn’t have any options left, because honestly, I thought that Hughes was a lot better out of the ‘pen than Cruz was. Idk, just my opinion…

  144. Milo Hamilton says:

I watch the auction game muted. It really cuts down on the annoyment.

  145. Boise Bucco says:

And correct me if I’m wrong, but Grilli hasn’t pitched in like a week…I’m sure he’s itching to get out there

  146. JMB says:

Since I’m in the LA rights range, the Root broadcast is blacked out for MLBEI for these games.

I guess I’m lucky to have missed auction night w. the numerous Frankie C. shots.

  147. Reading says:

I’m going to wager 100 fake units that this loser grounds into a DP.

  148. The Gunner says:

where the hell is Grilli, folks??

  149. Reading says:

  150. Milo Hamilton says:

Grilli only pitches when they’re winning.

  151. Boise Bucco says:

If Hurdle ever called on Hanny to come in in a situation like this and it worked and Hanny got out of the jam, Sports Illustrated would write a Sportsman of the Year article on him. Fact.

  152. JMB says:

That’s a hit, and Marte’s rocket was an error?

  153. Reading says:

Since we got six outs left, I’ll repeat the quote from the other night: “That’s what you can’t do in baseball. You can’t run a few plays into the line and kill the clock. That’s why this is the greatest game of all. You gotta give the other man his chance at bat.”

This is the quote at the end of the Pirates Post-Game Show on the radio. I might be a few words off, as I tried to write it down as quickly as I could. Hope it helps tonight.

  154. DemonDachshund says:

Gaby tater would make up for the pair of DPs imo.

  155. JMB says:

    Jones — 4-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI

Awesome night w. a great catch too!

  156. Milo Hamilton says:

How big does that lousy effort by Cruz look now ? Completely lost his composure when he didn’t get that strike call to Kemp.

  157. Can Barmes be the Hero tonight? Come on Clint!! 5-4 now bad guys still winning.

  158. You let great pitches go by all the time, and you swing at that crap on the first pitch, Come on!!!

  159. Boise Bucco says:

wasted no time grounding out on that one…

  160. Boise Bucco says:

Jeez, what in the world were we all thinking with the OVER with him…PRNW had us all fooled

  161. Milo Hamilton says:

Luis Cruz has more RBI than Cutch since the All Star break.

  162. Milo Hamilton says:

    Here you go, Gunner.

  163. Boise Bucco says:

    Ok Grilli, I’ll take a strikeout and a pop-up, please…

  164. Jay Jax Fl via New Castle says:

Love the fact Grilli isn’t walking Kemp intentionally.

  165. Milo Hamilton says:

Had to strike him out twice.

  166. RobertoForever says:

    Sorry, Boise

He can only get ya 2 K’s, lol.

Now its up to Marte, Walker and Cutch. Time for the “big boys” to show up.

  167. Boise Bucco says:

  168. Reading says:

Hopefully, we get that same strikezone.

  169. Reading says:

We cannot be shutdown by a dude named Kenley.

  170. Milo Hamilton says:

That doesn’t say a whole lot about your bench right there.

  171. JMB says:

The team battled, but this one just stayed out of reach.

  172. DemonDachshund says:

Eh, good game. Get them tomorrow.

  173. Reading says:

    Ballgame. No, really, game over.

  174. Milo Hamilton says:

Other than a good night from Garrett Jones and gratuitous shots of Jacki McKenry, not much to write home about there.

  175. The Gunner says:

Now the Bucs better win 3 straight from these Bums from Brooklyn – nothing else is acceptable!!!

  176. Walks are a killer again tonight. The winning run was walked, then the HBP, then the walk. Too many times this year, you would think they would learn something. They need to step up and take the next three games. Going to be difficult. The momentum needs to be taken back and then some. The Reds are just laughing all the way to the division title right now.

  177. Parrothead01 says:

It’s sad when you have to use a .197 hitter to pinch hit with the game on the line. Management has not supplied Clint with enough weapons.

  178. AJS says:

I hate Juan Cruz. In fact I hate most of the bullpen right now. Walks everywhere, But Cruz…Ugh. The utter stubbornness of Hurdle to not use Grilli when they are down unless it is the 9th inning is ridiculous. Use your best pitchers when they are needed most. Can’t afford to drop another run in the 8th? Go to Grilli. Need to keep it a one run game when you come up in the 9th? Hammer time.

And it is hard to say that Cutch is in a slump when he is hitting .360, but he just doesn’t look as dialed in lately(of course how can you expect anyone o stay as dialed in as he was for an entire season?)

This team needs to put together a solid game start to finish on both sides of the ball and get some confidence back.

  179. Thundercrack says:

I blame Arriba. He probably didn’t follow our instructions about going to the game.

I bet you he did the wave.

  180. Playoffs by 2012 says:

I meant no offense to you. That is why I asked the question. Thank you for properly correcting and educating me. If I did offend you, I apologize, and it will not happen again. Thank you sir.

  181. Reading says:

No problem Playoffs. Apology accepted. I try to hopefully bring a little humor to the game threads, and some frustration as well as I feel it slipping away. Lately, I guess I’ve been rubbing people the wrong way. I tried to keep it positive tonight.

  182. Drew71 says:

Thunder – Probably as he was jaywalking.

    He needs to be punished.

  183. Playoffs by 2012 says:

It’s all good. Do what ya feel. We all just want a winner!!

  184. twentytwo22 says:

Had they played this homestand at any time during the last two months they would have stomped these teams. The calendar turned to August and they changed. They look like they have the self-confidence of a 90 loss team. Whatever it is they need to get over it. They owned PNC Park for 4 months now they’re getting owned by the likes of Joe Saunders, Jason Marquis, and Aaron Harang. Their two most fearsome players, Andrew McCutchen and Pedro Alvarez, need to show up and stop letting their team get pushed around. All of their starters, with great home numbers, and their bullpen could help by not regarding the other lineup as Murderer’s Row.

The Pirates are better than this. They’re playing restrained. They need a fight. They need a display of balls on the field. They need something that enables them to be more extroverted and confident and energetic on the field. Right now, they’re in a Jose Tabata-like funk and they will lose to anybody, anywhere.

  185. Playoffs by 2012 says:

First off, big THANK YOU to RobertoForever for re-posting the line for me yesterday. The wife and I enjoyed the trip up to Pittsburgh for the weekend. Always good to take in a few games. Also, thank you to everyone for your patience while I update the standings. At long last here they are….please let me know if I have any of the totals wrong.
