Final: Pirates 2, Cardinals 1

By Dejan Kovacevic | Trib Total Media

Looking ahead to first pitch …

Game: Pirates (65-53) vs. St. Louis Cardinals (64-54)

Time: 8:15 p.m.

Site: Busch Stadium, St. Louis

TV, radio: Root Sports, 93.7 The Fan

Here is the live box score.

And here is the Pirates’ lineup vs. St. Louis RHP Jake Westbrook

  1. Starling Marte, LF
  2. Travis Snider, RF
  3. Andrew McCutchen, CF
  4. Garrett Jones, 1B
  5. Michael McKenry, C
  6. Pedro Alvarez, 3B
  7. Clint Barmes, SS
  8. Jordy Mercer, 2B
  9. James McDonald, RHP

  1. IMO, its all up to JMac tonight

  2. Well, we see what Clint thinks of Mercer. Batting below Barmes (He of the recent .300 month)

  3. Today’s THREE-PLAY FRIDAY OVER / UNDER (always for fun of course)

    LINE #1
Total Innings Pitched by James McDonald in Tonight’s Game
    Line is 5.75

    LINE #2
Total Hits + Walks + Runs Scored + RBI’s by Rod Barajas This Weekend Against St. Louis
    Line is 1.5

    LINE #3
Total Pirates Wins This Weekend Against St. Louis
    Line is 1.5

  4. Line 2 is pretty interesting. Figuring that the Fort will most likely get two of three starts.

    Decisions, decisions, decisions……

  5. Line 1: 100 on the over
Line 2: 50 on the under
Line 3: 100 on the under

  6. Line 1: 100 on the over

Line 2: Staying away from this one. McKerney is batting 5th tonight and I have no idea how many games Barajas will get.

Line 3: 100 on the over

As always thanks for doing this. I am sure it is more work then any of us realize.

  7. Glad to see Snider with an i back in the lineup

Shhh…Barmes is quietly hitting .325 in August with 8 RBI’s and a .841 OPS…maybe he’s channelling the ghost of Adam LaRoche’s late season surge

  8. Playoffs, using logic which has never worked for me

100 fritos on the UNDAH for line 1, if JMac has his stuff together for 7 innings, well I’m thinking CH will pull him and not risk a meltdown in the 8th or 9th.

100 fritos on the OVAH for line 2, Rod will get a hit and rbi/run on Saturday

How can I bet anything than 100 peanut butter filled pretzels on the OVAH on line 3?

Thanks again playoffs for doing this

  9. @Playoffs–

    Line 1: 100 under :( sorry, I think JMac’s ‘pen bound
Line 2: 100 under, Fort’s gettin’ some hits though
    Line 3: 100 SIT THE ____ DOWN’S OVER

  10. The more interesting lineup position, to me, is the the Fort ahead of Pedro. I know. I know, the Fort’s been doing well and they don’t want to move Pedro up, but looks strange nonetheless. Not a criticism, just an observation.

  11. Playoffs –

    Gonna go big this weekend…

Line 1: 100 on the UNDER
Line 2: 100 on the OVER
Line 3: 100 on the OVER – Gotta believe AJ’s attitude carries them this weekend!

  12. at playoffs:
Line 1, 100 on the over
Line 3 50 on the under.
Very Very important start tonight for Jmac.
If he fails tonight, when they go back to the 5 man rotation, it could send him to the pen.
And Resop has been awful since the break too. Will be interesting to see how and when he is used this weekend.
Haven’t heard about St. Louis weather.
Will it be rain, extreme heat, or Ok for this series?

  13. @playoffs – all 3 over for 100

Heading for a weeks R&R – Taking my new hat and my McCutchen jersey with me.

Hoping the buccos make me smile!

  14. JMac needs to channel his inner Mojo. NOW is the moment.

    Line 1: 100 – OVER
    Line 2: 50 – UNDER
    Line 3: 100 – OVER (please!!)

  15. @Biz

Take a double check of what Line 1 is. Its 5.75……..wait a second, wouldnt 5.75 be 6 innings?

  16. LINE 1: 50 over

    LINE 2: 50 under

    LINE 3: 100 UNDER

  17. @Playoffs

change Line 3 to 50 OVER

  18. @Ryan, You got it, no problem.

Also, yes J-Mac will need to go 6 innings for the OVER to win, anything less than that, the UNDER will win.

  19. @ Playoffs – Good afternoon. Interesting triple play Friday. Time to see if I can pad a lead a bit here so let’s tackle this:

Line 1 – Since the AS break I think it is fair to say J-Mac has been pretty bad. He has made six starts and has pitched 5 or less innings in four of them. However, I did see some positive in his last start before the implosion and I believe the extra work has to help. I see a motivated J-Mac in this spot tonight.

I will take 100 on the OVER

Line 2- Hmm Hot Rod may get one start this weekend tops, as the Fort appears tonight. Tough to put faith in a .196 hitter who over the last seven days is hitting a paltry .133. Almost time considering just making him AJ Burnett’s personal catcher and letting the Fort play.

I will take 75 on the UNDER

Line 3 – I want nothing more than to fly to San Diego Monday morning and get ready and see my beloved Bucs still in a playoff spot. I still believe (but am questioning it more and more each day).

I will take 25 on the OVER

    Thanks and Let’s Go Bucs!

  20. @JRay

You’re going to SD for the games?

  21. Breaking news…Millar believes the Cards take 2/3 this weekend. Anyone wanna change their wager?

  22. I think they will too, but can’t bring myself to bet agaist them.

  23. Line 1 – 100 on OVER – JMac keeps his focus and goes 6.
Line 2 – 100 on UNDER – Rod gets the start to catch Wandy, but goes 1-4.
Line 3 – 100 on OVER – No idea how it happens, but the team finds a way to take 2 of 3 this weekend.

  24. Playoffs

    Line #1—50 on the UNDER
    Line #2—50 on the UNDER
    Line #3—25 on the OVER

Thank you, and enjoy the SD games!

  25. @ Ryan – Yes I will be out at Petco for all three games of the series. Flying out from Phx Monday morning.

  26. @Playoffs

Line 1: 50 on the under
Line 2: 25 on the over
Line 3: 50 on the under

  27. St Louis Cardinals rolling out same lineup as one that lost last night to Dbacks with only five hits, best part still no Yadier Molina as he has destroyed us.

Jay, Craig, Holliday, Beltran, Freese, Descalso, Cruz, Furcal, Westbrook

  28. I will take 100 on the Under on all three lines Playoffs.

  29. I hate St. Louis! Not just the team but the city as well. Always have.
It’s always ungodly hot there. Dec. 31. Hot. March 7. Hot. July 4. Hellacious.
    It’s dirty.
It smells like stale yeast from Anheuser Busch and rotting carp from the Mississippi.
I hate Mike Shannon’s cornpone homerism. His incessant use of the word, “baby.”
I hate Tony LaRussa and his smug arrogance.
I hate how their fanbase terrorized an umpire for decades for an unfortunate call.
I hate their St. Paul sandwiches.

Lets get a sweep! Sweep, sweep, sweep.

  30. Thanks Ryan, dam eyesight

Playoffs, can I please change line 1 to 100 OVAH?

    If not, thats ok

    Appreciate all you do

  31. Playoffs,

    Great lines today.

    Line 1 – 100 UNDER
    Line 2 – 100 UNDER
    Line 3 – 100 OVER

  32. Oh wow, Red Sox and Yankees are on mlb tonight….who would’ve guessed.

  33. @playoffs

Line 1: 70 on the UNDER
Line 2: 100 on the UNDER

  34. Don’t know if anyone mentioned, but the Pirates and St. Louis are the game of the week on Fox, along with Sawx-Yanks. That must be the first time the Bucs are part of the Sat game in a long time.

  35. Over for a 100 in all three please

  36. John,

Not a fan of St. Louis either. Was driving a U-Haul through there on the way to Tulsa, Oklahoma and almost lost my family in the car behind us. That was before cell phones, GPS, etc. Then, almost got run off a bridge coming the other way on I-44 and I-70 interchange. My wife wanted to stop and tour the Arch, but I nixed it. Just wanted to get through there. Sweep ‘em!

  37. @ RobertoForever – Unfortunately most of the country will receive the Red Sox / Yanks game, even those of us out west. However it is the third time the Bucs have appeared as part of the FOX Saturday baseball package this year, earlier this season they appeared against the Cubs and Royals.

Now if ESPN would ever pick up a Pirates game that would be something. The Bucs have not appeared once on ESPN all year but the under .500 Red Sox about 12 times, the under .500 Phillies and Mets multiple times, oh don’t get me started.

  38. Playoffs….
    1. Under for 100
    2. Over for 100
    3. Over for 100

    DVR-ing the game….watching at midnight…Go Bucs.

  39. @Bizrow, no problem you got it.

@ALL, Thanks as always for the kind words, YOU GOT IT AND GOOD LUCK!!!

  40. @Playoffs

    LINE #1 — 100 on the OVER

    LINE #2 — 100 on the OVER

    LINE #3 — 100 on the OVER

    I’m feeling optimistic.

  41. I meant to mention this a few days ago and forgot.

A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who has visited “The Window” so far this season. I went back and checked and it has officially been 4 months (as of 8/15/2012) since the daily OVER / UNDER showed up on this blog.

Believe it or not, the first official participant was RobertoForever. He correctly (fake) wagered 20 units that Pedro Alvarez would have less than 2.5 strikeouts against the San Francisco Giants that afternoon.

What a crazy ride it has been so far. 67 participants and still growing. I’m amazed and humbled by this, and I’m glad you all enjoy it as much as I do. THANK YOU ALL AGAIN!!

  42. @playoffs – line #1,2,3 – 100 on the OVER for all three. thank you

This weekend is gonna be exciting as it get friends. Just savor it all and remember where we were last year.

  43. Thanks to you, Window. Made a fun summer even more fun. Also, your lines have been astute and sometimes a good departure point for debate/conversation. Plus, I know it has been time consuming, although I am sure you would never admit that.

  44. Playoffs:

    Line 1 50/O
    Line 2 50/U
    Line 3 50/O

    Thanks again.

  45. Line 1 50 on the over

Line 2 100 on the over

Line 3 100 on the over

  46. 44 games left…Beat ‘em Bucs!

  47. @ playoffs

Let me have 100 units on each as follows:

    1) under
    2) under
    3) under

  48. Very odd news to come out about Eddie Murray and Doug Decinces. Don’t expect to get news like that.

  49. @ playoffs

    line 1 – 100 over
    line 2 – 50 over
    line 3 – 50 over

  50. Nicely done J-Mac and “D”!

  51. @Oshkosh

Thanks for the tip on Murray & DeCinces. Too soon ?

  52. When was the last time the Bucs gave up a leadoff walk and the runner DIDN’T score?

Seems like forever. Nicely done Mr. Mac.

  53. yea, just looked this up what you guys are saying about murray and de cinces. wow…that is really some story.

  54. 2 down, 4+ to go for Mr. Mac.

  55. Help yourself here James. Just a base hit will do.

  56. Milo;

Not too soon at all. Excellent.

  57. OK J-Mac looks sharp early, doing his part time for the offense to get something going.

  58. John Russell managing the last 4.5 innings of Balt/Det tonight after Showalter was tossed for arguing a call.

    My money’s on the Tigers.

  59. Quickly bases loaded 0 out, need a couple runs this half inning.

  60. Bases loaded again. Come on Pedro. Put some more good lumber on the ball.

  61. Now that’s Bucco baseball.

  62. Great! Another wild pitch scores another run!!!

  63. Wow Cardinals handing us some runs…keep tacking on do not take foot off gas.

  64. This guy looks like he’s trying to catch a knuckleball.

  65. You need to be on third now Fort.

  66. Uh oh Climt, I wouldn’t sit next to AJ…throat punch time…

  67. Why did we get the old Barmes back? We really don’t need that kind of 2 for 4.

  68. Perfect. Barmes.

    Ok. Two at least.

  69. Nice hustle and bang bang throw by Fort…that was big!

  70. If someone wouldn’t mind explaining how Craig got out to me, all Gamecast says is that Craig was out on runner’s fielder’s choice at third.

  71. In the earlier blog, Lucky#87 and Groat#105, yes I have a great respect for an arm – Roberto Clemente always is first to come to my mind.

When as a youngster, I went to enough baseball camps and tryouts, and the first two pre-requisites were to see if you could throw (and how well) and run (and how fast).

It seems to me that the two players from India that we signed were on the basis of their having an outstanding arm.

Rinku Singh who was also mentioned in the earlier blog is still developing the rest of his skills in our organization simply because he has a noteworthy arm.

So does everyone’s whipping boy – including me – Pedro.

  72. JMac seems to be back.

  73. @Boise Bucco – pitch in the dirt, Craig ran for 3rd, but the ball rolled a bit to the left side, Fort recovered and made a nice throw to 3rd

  74. @ Boise Bucco – pitch in the dirt Craig took off for third and Fort made throw right on the bag very close play that umpire ruled out.

  75. haha, the Hot Rod special! Got it, thanks!

  76. See, that’s the downside (obviously) of Climt and his 2x double plays…the dreaded 8-9-1 heart of the lineup…

  77. Are we on the verge of seeing the JMac of the 2nd half?

  78. Phew! Nice K there on Furcal

  79. Five effective and efficient innings for J-Mac, kind of looks like the pitcher from first half of season.

  80. McDonald puts up a ’0′ in the fifth. Hurray!

  81. Haha if Furcal was still a Dodger there would be a full-on hissy fit going on right now…

3 called strikes? Yep, full-on hissy fit.

  82. Hey wasn’t somebody comparing Jake Westbrook to Correia a couple weeks ago?

  83. 4 ejections – 2 games.

  84. These umpires are out of control.

  85. Boy what is up with coaches and players getting tossed the moment the Pirates get a call…teams not used to us not being push overs

  86. JRay, just shows you how classy our guys are.

  87. Nice string of opposing folks being ejected.

  88. haha who was it this time?

  89. Condescending Wonka: “Wow, your third-base coach got ejected for arguing balls and strikes on a 2-2 count, you must really be proud.”

  90. @ Boise- third base coach Jose Oquendo

  91. Six strong from J-Mac…if we are to continue contending this is what we need from him.

  92. ‘Way to finish the 7th, JMac!

  93. can we hope JMac has his mojo back????

  94. (Ahem … duh, 6th.)

  95. Jandy, one thing to be admired is how Clint Hurdle can diplomatically hold discussions with umpires rarely will he lose it.

  96. Wow, I gotta say I did not see 6 shutout innings and 7 K’s coming outta JMac’s arm after that last game…way to turn it around!

  97. Awesome job by McDonald. He made it through his hump inning (5th – Milwaukee, Colorado, San Diego) and pitched a strong 6th.

  98. JRay, yes, that is true. Clint can argue without making a donkey of himself.

  99. Now we just gotta hope Climt can find a way to not hit into another inning ending DP…

  100. I really hope that Molina doesn’t make an appearance all weekend long and the pass balls continue to aid the bucs.

  101. Need that 5th RBI here for Navarro.

  102. I would have liked to see McD at least start the 7th. Everyone else, except Grilli and Hammer, scare me.

  103. The Cardinals have to be thrilled that McDonald is outta there.

  104. Pedro is 12-25 at Busch this year.

  105. Impending sense of doom.

  106. *&*&^&%&^*(&(*&*(^^$%$ Resop

  107. Uh, that’s a big “oops” on the pitching change…

  108. Milo, hush! ;X

  109. Marte’s gun saved a run there.

  110. Dejan,

I have another word for you that’s been co-opted by the sabermetrics crowd – useful. Drives me nuts.

DK: Meh. That’s just another ad hominem attack. Not very objective or intellectual.

  111. Cruz got it done!!

  112. Wish they would have let J-Mac start the seventh he was cruising and just at 87 pitches but big out by Cruz there, sure would be nice to tack on a run or two here.

  113. If you had more faith in Cruz, why not let him start the inning. Resop is not very good.

  114. Huh, nothing bad even happened…

  115. The Pirates are trying to win a game without an RBI.

  116. Fred Bird looks like a particularly lame mascot.

  117. SB for Cutch!

  118. Nice job by Grilli! Sit the &$@?& down!

  119. Grilli was greate.

It would be nice to add on before HAMMER time.

  120. All the Pirates need to do whenever the opposite batter strikes out is to flash “Sit the *^$$# Down” on the boards where they display the pitching stats down the left field and right field lines.

  121. Three straight STFDs here would be nice.

  122. Let’s get #STFD trending on twitter :D

  123. This might qualify as a critical at bat. Come on Man!

  124. #STFD MVP!!!

  125. Nice K Hammer

  126. @TDB

Now the pitchers have a cute teambuilding thing like #Zoltan! #STFD!

  127. WOW, neither pretty nor effective….but it worked tonight!!!

  128. STFFFFFFFFFFFFFD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ballgame!!!! Okay, not a K, but good enough.

  129. Well that was easy

  130. one of the more satisfying wins of this season. nicely done!

  131. Hey, a winning streak! Against playoff team!

Raise it! I hope y’all enjoyed that one from beginning to end!

  132. I believe Hanrahan’s last blown save was July 3rd against Houston. The Drew Sutton game.

And that breaks the string of 10 straight games allowing 5 or more runs.

  133. McDonald was great tonight. Let’s hope he is back on track. That would be huge for the Bucs.

  134. Ugh….. i forgot to place my wagers today

  135. Jimmy Mack beating Westbrook. Mentally bookmark this one as a biggie. Funny, earlier today Mitch Williams on MLBN said he would be surprised if Westbrook lost another game this season.

  136. Ross Ohlendorf’s line tonight vs. San Francisco – 2.1 IP / 8 Runs / 7 Earned.

  137. And behind the rebound pitching efforts of James McDonald the Pirates take game one of the important series against the Cards 2-1 and there was nooooooooo doubt about it.

The Bucs will look to take the series tomorrow afternoon when Erik Bedard takes the hill for the Bucs!

  138. Ohlendorf was shocked at the results.

  139. The OVER squeaks out the win tonight. Thanks to all who played. See you tomorrow, unless FOX blacks me out as well.

    (1) 2012 Topps Roberto Clemente Card

  140. Ejection tour ’12: Dodgers – check. Cardinals – check. Reds, Braves – you’re next. Giants, Nationals – playoffs or consider yourself lucky. We’re not gonna stop til we’ve slept in all o’you’alls ivory towers.

4-1 last 5 games against St. Louis (all in St. Louis). Two more games to win but leaving no worse than tied after this series.

Here’s future good news: Gallardo pitched tonight, which means the Pirates should miss him next weekend.

  141. I’m makin’ a comeback!!!

  142. Good morning team.

As I sit here, still in a bit of morning fog after a too-rare good night’s sleep, I am clear about one thing.

    I’m old.

I’m comfortable in the knowledge. Just a bit surprised as the realization hit me today like a ton of Depends.

Here are the signs. Rolling over me like liver spots.

    1. Returning from another week away, last night I took my wife to…
We each had the smaller portioned 2-2-2 plate. Off the economical Senior menu.
    No kidding.

    2. During my week away, my wife’s favorite dog, the only female (of four), a nasty, yappy, four pound, almost 14 year old poodle, became incontinent.
    (Which way? Both.)
My wife, at this very moment, has her at the Vet’s office. For counseling.
    No kidding.

    3. I find that my favorite worldly thing is…
    No kidding.

My oversize-dial-watch (no kidding) tells me it is past time for my morning walk.

Besides. I don’t want to be here when that little sh*tty thing gets home.

    The dog too.

  143. Let’s hope JMac is back on track, he looked real good last night. The way the Bucs got their runs wasn’t pretty, but it’s still a win. And, we ain’t proud around here. That damn Stinkcinnati can’t seem to lose.

Let’s strap it on the Cardinals tonight!!!!

  144. Drew,

    You are old.

  145. No kidding.

    What were we talking about?

  146. “We each had the smaller portioned 2-2-2 plate. Off the economical Senior menu.”

Been doing it for years….you’ll get used to it. The days of Big Macs, Big Gulps and Chili Cheese fries are gone my friend.

    Dietary Foober

  147. The Yankees have outrighted right-hander Ryota Igarashi to Triple-A. New York claimed the 33-year-old off waivers from the Blue Jays earlier this season, and he’s allowed four runs during his three innings in pinstripes.

He was NOT shocked by this news.

  148. Milo, as I, will appreciate that news, Playoffs.

Foo and Drew, (sounds like a musical duo)

I humbly refuse the senior discount wherever I go, even if well-meaning wait staff make the offer. I figure getting my food pureed is enough.

  149. Ah. So YOU’RE the other guy eating his food with a straw.

  150. By the way, pancakes with extra syrup does the trick too.

    TRUST me.

  151. No, I eat low carb. Pureed meat, cheese and chicken. I could eat a pizza the size of a kitchen table, but I don’t dare. Then I’d be the size of that table. Weight doesn’t just fall off anymore like when we were young. (Fall into a chorus of “Those Were the Days My Friend).

  152. Does anyone know which Fox announcing crew will be calling the game?

Have to say it is odd to see the TV listings for today include “Pittsburgh Pirates” in them!

  153. Ah. Weighty issues, so to speak. I puree for a different age related malady.

The difference between Ageism and all the other isms?

    Age is Ageism.

    Waffle House>IHOP

  155. @ JohninOshKosh- Dick Stockton and Eric Karros are calling the game on FOX today and you will see it in middle America.

Unfortunatley me and most the rest of the country will get Buck and McCarver on the Yanks-Red Sox game, aren’t the Red Sox well below .500 and out of the race?

  156. Thanks JRay!

I suspect the only reason I am getting the game instead of NY/Bos is because the Brewers are in the Central Division. I’ll take it. Always like to get national announcer perspective on the Bucs. (Rare as that is!)

  157. @ JohninOshKosh – well than I will have to count on you for the description from today’s ballgame.

  158. Bleeping Sawx-Yankers.

  159. Drew—

HAHA!! Here’s what I love about “old”: Senior prices at my favorite amusement parks! Guess they think Phantom and Millenium Force are too wild for us fogies. Well, they’re WRONG! I’ll be up & down the “hills” of Kennywood for the second time this season next week. WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

PS: Eric Bedard, be my hero today!

  160. Oh—roller coasters AND all other senior discounts are the only reasons I admit to seniorism. Ever. I’m still 30 in my brain.

#pirates are planning changes to starting rotation. Have not yet announced starters for SD series.

    Hmmm — I can’t wait to see.

I really want to see AJ on Wed.

  162. Lineups are out:

Marte, Mercer, Cutch, Jones, Snider, Alvarez, Barajas, Barmes, Bedard

For the Cards no Beltran, Jay, Descalso, Shumacker but Molina back in hitting sixth. they are shaking the lineup up today.

Big game for Bedard let’s get this series.

@ JMB – I believe the three starters for SD series are Correia, Burnett and Wandy and just deciding whether to keep AJ on normal rest.

  163. Cubs 2 Reds 0 going to second in game one of day/night DH

  164. Hurdle had no business leaving in Bedard to face Molina. He was clearly out of gas. Very poor bullpen management. And quite obvious to the rest of us.
