Final: Cardinals 6, Pirates 5

By Dejan Kovacevic | Trib Total Media

Looking ahead to first pitch …

Game: Pirates (66-53) vs. St. Louis Cardinals (64-55)

Time: 4:05 p.m.

Site: Busch Stadium, St. Louis

TV, radio: Fox, 93.7 The Fan

Here is the live box score.

And here is the Pirates’ lineup vs. St. Louis RHP Lance Lynn

  1. Starling Marte, LF
  2. Jordy Mercer, 2B
  3. Andrew McCutchen, CF
  4. Garrett Jones, 1B
  5. Travis Snider, RF
  6. Pedro Alvarez, 3B
  7. Rod Barajas, C
  8. Clint Barmes, SS
  9. Erik Bedard, LHP

  1. Mercer to the 2 spot, Snider to 5 spot. On paper makes sense but on field who knows.

  2. Hot Rod needs to win me some nuclear nuggets today!

  3. Cards 4 hits last night were fewest hits they have had in home game this season.

  4. Big question for me is when will Walker attempt to get back into lineup with no DL stint and it coming down to pain tolerance?

  5. Ozzie on Ramirez and AJ

“It surprised me A.J. didn’t drill him,” Guillen said. “The way A.J. is, it surprised me he didn’t do it.”

DK: Sounds like it disappointed Ozzie, too.

  6. We were lucky to win last night with no hit/run support. Need to get more hits/runs
tonight because the Cards have too good of a lineup to be shut down for long.
    GO! BUCS!

  7. They beat up on Lynn last time they faced him.

  8. @ JAL – and that coming off of a five hit game the night before, no wonder lineup vastly different today:

Furcal, Carpenter, Holliday, Craig, Freese, Molina, Robunson, Jackson, Lynn

in the bad news department Xavier Paul hits a 2 run HR to tie game with Cubs at 2.

  9. I probably would have left Snider at #2 for having a better OBP guy hitting ahead of Cutch… That would put Daydro at #5 though, and I guess having all right handed, really low BA guys 6-8 wouldn’t be great.

    Really need Walker back.

  10. Chico, Pedro hit a grand slam off of Lynn last time.

Lets hope Pedro gets him again.

  11. Has there been any word on Walker beyond day-to-day, waiting for the pain and swelling to come down?

  12. I’m sure that the Cards are resting Beltran(.167), Jay (.500), and Cruz (.000) against Bedard because they all have terrible OPS against Erik.

Their three best against Bedard are Craig, Molina and Furcal. While Holliday, Robinson and Freese all have OPS higher than .944 against him.

  13. Dejan

It did disappoint Ozzie, seems to dislike Hanley

  14. [hops onto soap box, taps mic twice to test]

So the geniuses at FOX and MLB have unilaterally and arbitrarily decided that rather than watch a meaningful game between my beloved Bucs and the Cardinals, that I would rather watch a meaningless 5 hour tickle fight between a bunch of over-hyped, over-rated steroid taking has-beens. Perhaps I should make today’s line for the Yankess / Sox game, too. I’d hate to have my original line blacked out by the powers that be.

[throws mic to the ground in disgust, hops off soap box]

  15. @Playoffs –

    Sing it brother!! AAAAAaaammmennnn…

  16. Here’s to hoping that FOX doesn’t black this line out as well.

Today’s OVER / UNDER (always for fun of course)

Total Combined Hits + Walks + RBI’s by Pedro Alvarez in Today’s Game
    Line is 2.5

  17. Playoffs

You expected anything better? I live in DC area and could watched every Yankee game this week.

  18. Hmmmm…I’ll go 50 on the OVER. Have a day, Petey!

  19. I’m getting the Bucs game today, but I hate the blackout rules. Many of us pay a lot of money to get that extra innings package and:

    1. When the Bucs play the Brewers, I can’t access the Pirates feed online due to the blackout restrictions. I have to watch it on the regional Fox sports network covering the Crew.
    2. We are all prisoners to the Fox game of the week. If the Bucs are playing at the same time but not being telecast by my local Fox affiliate, then I am SOL.

I don’t get it. I am stupid enough to pay MLB for their package. Sure, I wouldn’t watch the Fox telecast of BOS/NY, but can the number of people who pay for the package and would not watch the local Fox affiliate really affect ratings that significantly? I can’t possible believe so.

  20. @Playoffs

    100 on the OVER.

  21. Budmeister stinks.

Look at the commissioners the MLB, NFL, NHL and NBA have.

    The Three Stooges plus Shemp.

In spite of them, sports makes money hand over fist

@Playoffs, 100 on the OVAH please, Pedro goes over with one swing of the bat, thanks again

Got my playoff ticket stuff today, haven’t opened it up yet

  22. @JAL,

I’m in the same area as you. If I was a Yankees or Sox fan, I’d never have to purchase any type of MLB package. The YankeeSox National Network consisting of TBS, MLB Network, FOX and ESPN would be kind enough to broadcast at least 100 of my games every year.

  23. Every game is huge from here on out, but this one just feels extra large today. Lets Go Bucs!

  24. Why the Atlanta market would get Yanks/Sox’s is beyond me. The Bucs and Cards are in a race with Atlanta. Just stupid.

  25. At playoffs:
    50 on the under.
As a sox fan, i agrese with you.

  26. @ Playoffs – well I second your rant and have no desire to watch Yanks Red Sox which I could find on ESPN 20 times a year including tomorrow night for Sunday Night baseball.

    As for the line today:

I will take 50 on the UNDER

    thanks and Let’s Go Bucs!

  27. @Milo66

    Good point.

I can receive the Fresno Fox (Giants) as well as my local Bakersfield Fox (Dodgers) w. my antenna, so you would think one of them would want to show the other two teams battling for the 2nd WC. However, they’re both showing Sox/Yanks.

  28. 100 over. Thanks.

  29. @Playoffs–

    100 Under

  30. @playoffs…

I’m in L.A. and also won’t be able to watch the game. Sucks.

As far a the wager, I’ll go 50 on the under and hope Pedro proves me wrong.

  31. They’re showing Rangers/Blue Jays on AFN here, and Tanner Scheppers (remember him?) had runners on 2nd and 3rd no outs, then walked the bases full with 1 out before being pulled. Jays got zero runs in the inning. Good inning for Rangers pitching.

I’m off tonight, so I get to watch the Bucs, hopefully this means a WIN for the Buccos!

  32. @playoffs

    75 UNDER

  33. @Playoffs –

I would like 50 on the UNDER for today, please. Thanks.

  34. The thing I don’t get is that every other sport can get this right… How hard would it be to allow Innings to only blackout games being shown in my area? As mentioned by others, they certainly can limit their blackouts to just my area…

Do they really think I’d say, well, this Cards/Bucs game is blacked out today, guess I’ll watch yet another BOS/NYY matchup instead of listen to my game on the internet radio broadcast?

  35. @Playoffs -

    100 on the OVER please.

  36. Playoffs

I’ll take 100 on the over please!

  37. @ Playoffs

75 on the over. It’s a DAY game, right.

  38. Playoffs

I’ll take 100 on the OVER

    Let’s Go Bucs!

  39. Oh, and Happy Birthday to Roberto Clemente. It would have been his 78th birthday. hope the Bucs can bring him home a victory.

  40. @Playoffs

I believe in Day-dro, but I gotta go under for 50 units. Hope I get to waste them.

  41. @RF–that’s how I feel…yesterday I went with the under on JMac and he pitched a shutout thru 6, so now it’s just a good luck thing.

  42. Playoffs, 100 on the OVER.

    yea, I’m drinking some kool-aid.

  43. do we get Good Bedard or Bad Bedard today?

  44. @ Roberto – 40

Nice touch by your post in recogniziing The Great One’s birthday – I hope you had a chance to see him play back in the day. Let’s hope the Bucs put on a performance today that he would be proud of.

Geesh – that damn Stinkcinnati won again, let’s hope the Cubs luck out and win the 2nd game.

  45. Wouldn’t you know it. Fox announcers mention that Lynn has an 8.22 ERA in the first
inning and the Pirates go 1-2-3.

  46. Bucs-Cards on FOX-19 here in Cincinnati!

  47. @ Gunner

I was fortunate enough to watch the great one in person. I remember being glued to the TV on the day his plane disappeared. I didn’t want to believe it.

  48. Man, 2-6 hitters are all .300 hitters…

  49. Uh oh, looking like it’s Badard today.

  50. That was a fast run.

  51. Nice start, Erik. GEEEEZ!!

  52. @The Gunner

Unfortunately, no, never got to see him in person. I try to watch anything I can on him. Got to see Pops, but not Roberto.

  53. Bedard threw like 3 straight high fastballls, first 2 were balls, Holliday just couldn’t lay off

  54. Roberto was my childhood hero. I cried when I heard he died. I was 11 years old.

I sent requests to Stargell, Oliver and Clemente for their autographs to Three Rivers Stadium and only Clemente responded with a 5 x 7 b/w signed picture. I still treasure it.

  55. Man, Barmes is quick on the pivot turning a DP…nicely done

  56. Hopefully that was just a Badard cameo, and Good Bedard will be here for the rest of the game.

Hoping to stay within 6.5 of Cincy today…

  57. WS hero hits into DP and chance for big inning is gone!

  58. Newville, PA FINALLY gets a Pirate game!! Now let’s go GET ‘EM BUCS!!

  59. Can they just surrender this inning to save time?

Skip right to B3, Marte will be up in T4.

  60. I like Barajas as a catcher and I respect what he’s done with the pitching staff, but that’s about as far as it goes…I really don’t think he’s coming back next year.

  61. C’mon Jordy, base rip to tie it up…

  62. And that’s why they don’t let me manage.

  63. Nice job Jordy! Tie this one up.

  64. haha hey lookit that! Hot Rod is deceptively quick…!

  65. whoops, my bad, that was Barmes, now it makes sense how he scored from second

  66. I was there when Roberto got booed at Forbes

He “only” hit something like .298 that season. Every time I read about Philly booing Santa Claus, I think, well, Burghers booed Roberto.

Of course I also saw him hit two shots in one game over the gate in Right Center, throw out a guy at first on a single to right

My Mom woke me up and told me the news. We had partied all night and never knew what had happened.

What I would give for one more time to see him play

  67. 2 K’s for Cutch but Bucs tie it up.

    1-1 after 2 and a half.

  68. Nice to see Mercer come up big with two out RBI, but what is up with Cutch another K and leaves runners in scoring position.

  69. PRNW getting interviewed on Fox

  70. PRNW on Fox is reporting he took some swings today and is “pretty positive” as to when he will be back

Hearing that and us pulling this out, will make me sleep well tonight

  71. PRNW is “rooting” for Snider to get there as he is getting interviewed.

Mentioned his finger looked like a “Z”

Gawd, I love that guy. Now they are asking him about Roberto

  72. Is it time to bat Barmes second in the lineup?

  73. Hmmm, I didnt know Jones was now McCutchen.

  74. How is the Fox coverage? Are they being even handed or acting like the Cards are way better than the Bucs?

  75. Jones’ K was only Lynn’s 3rd K, I could swear that he had more…maybe it just seems like he’s getting a lot of swings and misses

  76. @Chico, honestly it’s pretty “fair and balanced” lol…not too homer-y either way.

  77. I KNEW Lynn had more K’s than that! haha the announcer said that Jones’ K was Lynn’s 3rd strikeout of the day, and I was thinkin “man, I could swear he had more…”

  78. Come on Rod. Do something instead of striking out. Put the ball in play, but not directly at a Cardinal player.

  79. Load em up for Barmes :)

  80. Ok, here is a chance folks

  81. Just hang one curveball

  82. Wasn’t it the 4th last weekend for Barmes? Just saying

  83. Thats a BS strike!

  84. Terrible call strike three on Barmes. Terrible.

  85. Please somebody tell me how you allow to let yourself strike out looking with bases loaded and pitcher behind you?

  86. #UmpShow

  87. @Chico

To me it seems fair, except that it doesn’t seem like Karros has done ANY homework on the Pirates. All of his comments are generaliztions. Nothing specific to the Pirates players.

BTW, there is no way that last pitch was a strike on that Barmes K. How can an ump give that pitch to a pitcher who has walked 3 guys. Our 3B coach should be screaming and getting thrown out right now, huh?

  88. A missed opportunity for sure

Step up Bedard, we will get to Lynn, or he will get himself

  89. What a wasted opportunity. 2/3′s of the killer B’s kill us again.

  90. Barmes doesn’t raise his voice at a bad call in St. Louis. Busch Stadium the cathedral of baseball. Classy move Clint. Gutless too.

  91. That breaking pitch to Barmes was way off the plate and the ump had already called it a ball earlier in the count, Barmes was right to not swing. Idk, maybe he should’ve since he had 2 strikes and it was close, but either way it was ball 4.

  92. Strike zone’s been expanding and shrinking inning to inning since the start of the game. Hate games like this.

  93. Really sucks to get bases loaded with 1 out and get nothing out of it though.

  94. Still need 7 for this league

    Dejan’s Lunatics (ID# 362238)

    Password 1203

  95. 3-1, DOUBLE CRAP

  96. That inning’s gonna be haunting us all day now

  97. And the two strikeouts are going to come back and bite us BIG time this inning. Leaving the bases loaded last inning is horrible. And now the error by Snider leads to 2 scoring and putting the batter on 2nd with no outs.

  98. No error charged… ‘bad bounce’ double…

  99. So Bedard just threw an 87 mpn fastball according to Gameday. 87? If that’s true, balls are about to start flying in St. Louis.

  100. Don’t cash in when we had our chance and good teams quickly jump on you….better minimize or this will get away in a hurry.

  101. That was a double. No error there.

The ball had so much spin on it, that when it bounced directly in front of Snider, the next bounce was in the SECOND lawn-mower swath when it landed again. No player gets to that bounce.

    But certainly unlucky.

  102. Heads-up DP on a liner to Bedard who wheels and throws to second to Barmes to nail the baserunner.

  103. Bedard is, look what I caught. Nice double play to bring the pitcher up with no one on.

  104. @pattonbb

His fastball has consistently been 89-91 today.

  105. Good cleanup, now we need at least one back

  106. lol liked Fox replaying MartePartay’s welcome-to-the-big-leagues HR

  107. Perfect bunt single for Marte

  108. Marte gets things started

  110. Marte scores on Mercer’s Double. Now 3-2 Cards.

  111. Mercer with an RBI double. 3-2 really bad guys.

  112. Hey lookit that! 3-2!!

  113. Cutch with his best Barmes impression

  114. Come on Cutch. Ever since you were plunked by Chapman, you havent been the same.

  115. Seems as if Mercer has been big, but really need Cutch to regain some form.

  116. Mercer to third on a wild pitch

  117. Mercer scores on a sac fly by Jones 3-3

  118. 3-3 on the sac fly by Jones.

  119. Wow, awesome AB by Jones.Cardinals bring in the lefty, Clint left Jones in, and he rewarded. Jonesy stayed back against the junk and then got a solid contact on a pitch. RF made a great diving play, but the run scores anyway on a Sac Fly.

    Great AB against the lefty.

  120. Good day by Mercer. Bad day by McCutchen. Tie game for the team.

  121. This sucks not being able to watch this game. Yanks/Sox for the 8000th time. Great.

  122. Nicely done answer right back! Mercer with a few contributions today….now for Bedard to hold them here.

  123. Lynn really wasn’t pitching that bad of game either when he was pulled…Matheny doesn’t screw around.

  124. I don’t think Cutch can have a bad day

  125. Bases loaded for Yadier Molina…

  126. Bedard vrs Molina. Critical at bat in this ball game.

  127. Need a #STFD here!!

  128. Bad guys get the ground-rule double. 5-3 Cards.

  129. I’m so sick of Yadier Molina

  130. I’m a little behind delaying the TV to synch up with radio on MLB at bat. Why not pull Bedard?

  131. Yadier Molina’s nickname is Buc Destroyer

  132. Hook time! Come on Man!!!!!!!

  133. Now Hurdle on the other hand

    What was he thinking?

  134. haha Jared Hughes #SweetChinMusic

  135. Gotta love a pitcher who sees his team claw back twice to tie a game…..and then both times goes out there to give the opposition the lead again.

  136. matheny managing the game with urgency and Hurdle sitting in his hands. reading on game cast the RH was ready yet he let Bedard serve it up to Molina….someone needs to remind Clint this is a pennant race!

  137. A #STFD two runs too late.

  138. Hughes should have been brought in to face Molina….hope the team has enough to come back a third time today.

  139. If Bedard could’ve got Molina, Hughes likely would’ve started the 6th fresh. Now, he’s gonna be goin into the 6th after throwing a few in the 5th

  140. Agree Playoffs. Seemed an obvious move to bring somebody else in to face Molina. The soft-throwing lefty did not get it done.

  141. New pitcher in to face Hot Rod? They must be scared of his .195 average

  142. Haha

Matheny’s notes must not be very good. Hot Rod is much worse against lefties than righties.

Hope that wasting these pitchers ends up coming back to bite the Cards.

  143. Erik Bedard is frigging pathetic. Runner on 1st with two out and he can’t get out of the inning.

And for that matter, what’s Hurdle doing leaving him in at that point? He’s 7-12 for a reason and he just loaded the bases by giving up his 8th hit and walking a man, plus he’s facing a righty. Is he that gung-ho about him being the pitcher of record?

He brought Hughes in one batter too late and it cost us two runs. Pathetic.

  144. I would hope that SOMETHING comes back to bite the Cards already…

    Cutch is 0-3 with 2 K’s
    Daydro is 0-2 with 2 K’s

    We’re due already!

  145. Funny, the national announcers didn’t even talk about pulling Bedard. They mentioned Hughes up in the bullpen, on the 3-1 count before walking the bases loaded.

Even when Bedard, Barajas and Barmes got together on the mound, still no mention of pulling Bedard.

  146. Wait, what? Yamaico Navarro replaces Starling Marte in LF, and they call it a “defensive replacement”?

Marte’s spot is up 2nd in the next half inning. Could Marte be hurt? Who would pull Marte for Navarro, with no other change?

  147. Any word on why Navarro replaced Marte in LF?

  148. Pedro Alvarez is due all right…due for another strike out.

  149. Nothing on Twitter about it

  150. If Marte is hurt better decide between Presley and Tabata quickly and call Indy.

  151. Hey I like this Mujica guy already

  152. Another leadoff hit for the Bucs. Time for some thunder…

  153. Gaby starts the inning off nicely with double time to get at Cards pen!

  154. Alright Cutch let’s do this

  155. About to leave another RISP.

    Good teams don’t do this.

  156. C’mon, Cutch!

  157. Somebody tell Brown and Wehner that that wasn’t Marte. Are they even at the game?

  158. Rob Biertempfel ‏@BiertempfelTrib
#Pirates LF Marte left game due to discomfort in his right side

  159. Frigging. Pathetic.

  160. Marte left due to discomfort in his right side, per Biertempfel and Sanserino via Twitter

  161. Bedard by outs
    0 – 19 Runs, 56 Walks + Hits, .241 BA, .742 OPS
    1 – 18 Runs, 44 Walks + Hits, .239 BA, .672 OPS
    2 – 24 Runs, 65 Walks + Hits, .280 BA, .769 OPS

McCutchen the incredibly shrinking MVP candidate.

  162. Shoot, waste a lead off double fail to score and now have our work cut out for us, game of missed chances and the Cards big players getting big hit and ours not.

  163. With our luck, probably appendicitis.

  164. Hughes is still in there huh…I know relief pitchers can work more than one inning and it’s ok and all, but…

  165. Sounds like an oblique injury. That would be bad. Very, very bad. Have to recall either Tabata or Presley.

  166. 2.1 solid innings of work turned in from Jared Hughes maybe we won’t send him back down to Indy again as he appears to be very much a part of the solution.

  167. Great game by Hughes. Let’s make it count with a comeback. Hrere come the lefty who needs to buy a vowel

  168. Plus if Marte can’t go tomorrow, you are looking at being 2 men down on the active roster. Someone (either Walker or Marte) would have to be DL’ed.

  169. @ Boise – Hughes only needed 21 pitches to get through his two plus innings, was veer efficient.

  170. Yep, Hughes just told me to #STFD

  171. @Boise

Grilli, Hanrahan and probably not Resop coming out of the pen today. Grilli and Hammer with back-to-back outings already, and Resop with 3 out of the last 4 days.

  172. Wow holy Tony Larussa! Cards don’t go to lefty to face jones and Pedro? Make em pay.

  173. Yet another leadoff hit. Lets Go Bucs!

  174. If save situation guaranty hanny would go.

  175. Time for Pedro to give us the over

  176. Bloop and a blip and here we go…. two on no outs…

  177. @ Playoffs by 2012 – 164

I hope it’s Presley, with my luck that Scabata guy will be back.

Bedard’s performance was less than stellar for sure, very disappointing.

  178. C’mon Daydro…I need me some Overbay balls!

  179. 1st and 2nd, no out.

Time for strike out number 130 for Pedro.

  180. Jonesy starts off the inning with a hit. Really solid for the team during Cutch’s slump.

    J-hay with a follow ph-single. C’mon Day-dro. Waste my bet!

  181. Told ya!

    Pedro sucks.

  182. Daydro is not here today but his twin brother K-dro is

  183. This was a great spot to bring in McKenry.

  184. @Dave–YEP

  185. Hot Rod…………….geesh!!

  186. So frustrating, get two runners on and go back to back K’s, Fort needs to strt playing a lot more.

  187. Man, how bad of a scandal would it be if a team were to have two twin brothers who were like, identical brothers, and one was a lot better at hitting than the other…and one got caught one day batting out of order for the other…would it be worse than steroids?

  188. Fort gets his shot here instead

  189. Hahahahaha Barajas hitting over Barmes.

    Hurdle’s awesome.

  190. McKenry up to pinch-hit with guys on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs.

C’mon Fort. Live up to all the hopes of the Pirates fans.

  191. Not meant to be that inning.

  192. Pathetic. Just pathetic.

  193. Fort with a routine flyball, stranding 2.

    Lot of missed opportunities today.

  194. I never second guess, but I’d have let Barmes hit. Fastball pitcher and he hits the other way well. Fort a pure pull hitter.

  195. Where the h— are the guys who are supposed to drive in runs???

  196. @ RobertoForever – 188

Good teams make opportunities and the Bucs are not so good today. Bedard sure didn’t help the cause, I am extremely disgusted with him. And, to think, there are some people on this board who think reacquiring Maholm was a bad move.

    Bedard basically stinks.

  197. I don’t want to hear about Alvarez’s supposedly awesome hitting capabilities ever again.

  198. So BUCS will have Sanchez Navarro and mercer in the 9th. Does Cutch get a redeemer at bat! And if so, does he deliver?

  199. Whatever. McKenry hit for the wrong guy. Barmes has outhit Barajas recently. No Walker and other than a hot Jones we’re relying on fringe players to win games. McCutchen and Alvarez are on paid vacations at the moment. Assuming those guys will get going soon but we’re losing games while waiting.

  200. Wow, Molina had that pine tar at least 50% up his bat. Someone should have asked about that, just to screw with Molina’s head.

  201. Gotta depend on Crud to hold ‘em

  202. Don’t look now but ciriaco, Pedro, has 4 hits today at Yankee stadium.

  203. @22 – felt the same way about when Fort should have been used and this team needs Alvarez and Cutch if it has another spurt left in it during crunch time of the season.

Also, Clint needs to settle on his five best arms and run that rotation even if it means a AAA arm!

  204. No surprise — Ciriaco is a player!

  205. thanks for the help, Beltran / Crud needs it

  206. Cruz is losing it….how about a swap of him and Wilson to give us the second LH option in pen?

  207. Cruz laboring as he exceeds Hughes pitch count.

  208. Like Bedard, Crud stinks. Crud was lucky to get out that inning.

  209. I’m confused, why are we hating on a pitcher with a 2.62 ERA, 8.5 K/9, 1 inherited runner scored out of 7, and the lowest HR/IP rate on the relief staff?

Juan Cruz seems to have done pretty well for us this year.

  210. Go go Gaby go

  211. Wow. Leadoff base runners all night long, not much to show for it

  212. Here we come… bring ‘em home, Jordy…

  213. Do u bunt mercer?

  214. Ugh do we have any more players?

  215. Damn hope Mercer is ok. HBP on the hand. Bases loaded and nooooooo outs

  216. This is your chance Cutch!

  217. Need about half the Indy Roster to come up now

  218. Can Walker hit for pitchers spot?

  219. Cutch really needs to come thru here. A granny would do nicely.

  220. Cutch is due, folks!

  221. Predicting Cutch and Jonesy with back to back doubles to go-ahead by 2.

    C’mon Cutch!

  222. Well that was the best outcome for cutch right now. Slumping badly.

  223. Huge that they didnt get the DP. 5-4, 1st and third, 1 out

  224. Just get the ball out of the infield….please.

  225. just get a sacrifice fly, Garrett

  226. there was ball 4

  227. watch Jones strike out now…

  228. Jones is taking HR cuts.

  229. Ouch. Jones K’s. Harrison decides it.

  230. @ Clarence – 231

    thanks for the good luck

  231. the Jay Hey kid!!!

  232. Thanks for pissing away yet another one, Buccos.

  233. bases loaded and no outs…..

  234. Can’t hide players who don’t walk. They get exposed – Jones.

  235. Bush league execution.

  236. Love cutch. Love him. But that l is on him.

  237. Sooooooooooooooooooo many chances today. Very disappointing.

    Did NOT enjoy this, Dejan…

  238. At least Bedard rightfully gets his 13th loss.

  239. Wasted opportunity after wasted opportunity, very disappointing loss today. Makes tomorrows game very big for the series but this one will linger a bit.

  240. Hard to “enjoy” a Wild Card race when your team pisses away opportunities and your manager continues to make questionable lineup decisions.

DK: Get as angry as you want at the team. Clean up the language.

  241. JHay kid? You’re joking. This is Clint Hurdle’s loss. No earthly reason to leave in Bedard to face Molina. He was completely out of gas. And pinch hitting Navarro? And not having Cutch running with 3-2 on Jones? Clint Hurdle’s in-game management mistakes become more glaring as the season goes on.

  242. DK, ask Clint Hurdle in his postgame: “Bedard was very clearly out of gas. What was your thinking letting him pitch to Molina?”

DK: I’m not in St. Louis. But I’d never take a suggested question from a reader under any circumstance. That burden of responsibility should always be up to the reporter. In other words, if I ask a tough question, I’m not going to explain to anyone, “B-B-But a READER TOLD ME TO ASK!”

  243. The bench lost this one. No one of note available. Who else has a bench of Navarro, Mercer (usually), Harrison and the backup catcher? The team definitely is two bats down; September call-ups will be extremely meaningful. Imagine these two games when the Bucs could bring in Clement or Tabata or Fryer or Boggs? At least having LH bats available will help a lot.

  244. Objective not achieved.

  245. Tabata, Fryer and Boggs aren’t much better than what was there today. I’d rather not imagine it.

  246. Pirates lose a one run game, and the neck-bearded trolls literally come out of the woodwork. Enjoy the next 18 or so hours neckbeards. The blog is now yours.

  247. Well, at least they’re more options. Presley, too.

  248. Who’s coming out of the woodwork? I’m on here regularly.

  249. Oh wait, you’re referring to 22.

  250. Time to give up on Bedard, the once promising Oriole who owns the world record for salary received by a starter divided by good innings pitched.

  251. The Cardinals stink and the Pirates should play them like they know they stink. The Pirates did everything to try to lose and they lost by one run.

    Oh well, onward

    McCutchen & Alvarez by month
    April – 5 HR, 16 RBI, 19 Runs
    May – 11 HR, 33 RBI, 27 Runs
    June – 14 HR, 46 RBI, 35 Runs
    July – 13 HR, 29 RBI, 33 Runs
    August – 3 HR, 10 RBI, 19 Runs

You suck now but it’s not terminal. There’s a playoff spot to be won here. Jump on the bus guys. You can do it. You can do it.

  252. A win tomorrow makes the Pirates 5-4 at St. Louis for the season. Play good ball and they win.

  253. @22…huh when you put it like that…win tomorrow–5-4 IN StL isn’t bad at all!

  254. you gotta admit though, the way the Cards are playing, I can’t see how they’ve gotten to be +105 or whatever they are in the runs differential. Bedard wasn’t throwing lollypops or anything, but it’s not like he was lights-out either. They very easily could’ve been up by 7 or 8 and they just weren’t. They really dropped the ball in the 1st.

  255. Interesting to see game with national announcers. All game long cards (not pirates?) were missing oppotunities. Oh….the cards spread out their offense and have four guys with 60 plus rbi but the pirates rely soley on McCutchen even though we also have four playes with 60 plus rbi .

both teams had chances…one called strike on barmes and one no call just before molinas double were huge….not complaining just vsaying…margin of victory that slim. We’ll get them sunday…just need to FINISH august strong

  256. Positive note: Pirates should have won this game. We know it. Cardinals know it. Everybody knows it. Unfortunately, however, the game gets put in the L column. Pirates probably should not have won last night. So it all evens out.

  257. A win on Sunday and the Buccos win a tough series. Keep winning series and you wind up in the playoffs. Simple as that.

  259. Amazing, who’d have thought at the beginning of this week that Navaro and Tabata would be back.

  260. Good nows with Tabata, he has been there before has many AB’s at the MLB level, hopefully the demotion made him realize he has to play with all out effort, but I think he can step in and help.

  261. DK. I meant that as being tongue and cheek. Love your work. :)

  262. “B-B-But a READER TOLD ME TO ASK!”

And you seem a little angry. I’m kind of taken aback.

DK: No, no, no, sorry, that’s my fault for coming across like that. That last fake quote was simply portraying how meek I or anyone would sound offering that explanation.

That’s pretty much my stock response to that. You’d be surprised how many people seriously offer up questions to be asked.

  263. Negative note: Pirates 3-7 in last ten games tied with Houston for worst record in NL.

  264. It is a nice change to be complaining about a lost baseball game in late August and pointing out our best player hasn’t been at his best during the second half, especially since the beaning by Chapman.

Pirates win today to take 2 of 3 from Cardinals is a step in the right direction. Curious to see what happens with Marte and Mercer injured and news that Tabata will be recalled.

  265. Dejan. Don’t be meek. or hanrahan. Say “The Public Has A Right To Know” like they do in all those black & white movies.

And you get to wear one of those cool hats with a “Press” card in the hatband.

And take notes with a pencil.

    (Do they still make pencils?)

  266. Then run outside to a payphone and call in your story,

Then back in the office, some angry guy in a bad crewcut will yell
    “Stop The Presses”

  267. Then the bad crewcut will slap you on the shoulder and say
    “Nice Job, Kid.”

Someone referred to as The Girl will bring you a Cup of Joe. Black.

Outside, a kid in a nice crewcut will yell
    “Read All About It”

And your friends, Max, Sam, Frank and you will go out to a bar for cigarettes and a Starbucks venti soy latte, iced.

    Waittaminnit. That ruined everything.

  268. @ Reading – 268- that is definitely a negative. The only positive to pull from it is as of today we still head into a ballgame holding a playoff spot.

In reality though the team needs to right itself in a hurrry as the true contenders are winning and this is where they go and make separation, just look at Reds, Nationals, Braves just in the NL alone.

Really huge game today….I really rather see a team out in SD coming off of a series win rather than a team that comes limping in.

  269. @ JMB – Ibelieve you will be out in SD as well and were interested in pitching probables.

Mon – Wandy, Tue- AJ, Wed- J-Mac…..Correia taken out.

  270. Thanks Jray.

That’s exactly whom I wanted to see On Tues & Wed –awesome!

  271. No lineup yet. 2 hrs before game?

  272. Maverick Mercer…

    I dunno, dude!

    Rob Biertempfel ‏@BiertempfelTrib
#Pirates Mercer & wife will name their son Maverick. NOT Top Gun-inspired. “We wanted to do that M&M thing, plus, it’s good walkup name.”

  273. the whole wearing “69 dude” thing makes more sense now.

  274. The whole world makes more sense now.

    - Goose

  275. Didn’t DK say to email him directly if there’s no game thread up? I’m pretty sure he said to email him, even if it’s the middle of the night. One does not simply not put up a game thread for the Sunday game an hour prior to Bucs/Cards.

  276. Rob Biertempfel ‏@BiertempfelTrib
    Still no lineup from #Pirates,

  277. Bummer!

    Rob Biertempfel ‏@BiertempfelTrib
#Pirates put OF Starling Marte on 15-day DL (right oblique strain), recall Jose Tabata

No Marte and who knows when PRNW will be back.

  278. First pitch in an hour and still no lineup…what is the holdup? Maybe testing Walker?

  279. @ JMB – that stinks really wanted to see him in person for first time next week.

  280. Seems like nothing has changed Tabata has got picked off twice and layers down a crappy bunt…..
