Pittsburgh sports talk with the Trib columnist

Final: Padres 3, Pirates 1

By Dejan Kovacevic | Trib Total Media

Looking ahead to first pitch …

Game: Pirates (67-54) vs. San Diego Padres (53-70)

Time: 10:05 p.m.

Site: Petco Park, San Diego

TV, radio: Root Sports, 93.7 The Fan

Here is the Trib’s Bucco Blog for updates from Rob Biertempfel and Karen Price.

Here is the live box score.

And here is the Pirates’ lineup vs. San Diego RHP Edinson Volquez

  1. Jose Tabata, LF
  2. Travis Snider, RF
  3. Andrew McCutchen, CF
  4. Garrett Jones, 1B
  5. Neil Walker, 2B
  6. Pedro Alvarez, 3B
  7. Clint Barmes, SS
  8. Rod Barajas, C
  9. Kevin Correia, RHP

  1. RobertoForever says:

You and Kristy tweeted Barmes hitting in the 7 spot ahead of Barajas. I assume here its listed as part of the template.

Don’t want to take away Barmes honor for moving up in the lineup. jk – not really since Barmes is hitting .300 lately.

  2. JaxBuc says:

Right field is expansive at Petco, but I didn’t think CH would actually play two guys out there.

  3. The Gunner says:

The Bucs are going to win tonight & it won’t be pretty. Kudos to Correia for stepping up tonight. I suspect they;ll try to get 5 innings out of him and then use Wilson & McPherson. It’ll almost be like a spring training game.

And Tabata will have a great game and be on Dan Potash’s post game show.

  4. Chuck H says:

The Bucs better put on their hitting clothes for the series with the Padres. Lately, even
Andrew has been in a slump, along with the season long slumps of Barajas and Alvarez. Also, with Neil Walker, playing RF along with Travis Snider, the hole between first and second will be inviting and huge. At least, there will be plenty of coverage in RF. Kevin Correia will not be available to pitch tonight, so who is gonna pitch?
    GO, BUCS!!

  5. Thundercrack says:

The owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars is Shad Kahn. He was born in Pakistan.

I believe he has traveled all around the world.

DK: Doesn’t sound like that includes London.

  6. RobertoForever says:

    @Chuck H

Correia is definitely pitching tonight. He volunteered last night to Clint Hurdle to come back out tonight and start. The Bucs called up both Justin Wilson and McPherson from Triple-A to help out as well.

I don’t expect Correia to last 5 innings. If he does, it will be a real solid for the team.

  7. As one who was quick to criticize Correia for what I took to be an attitude issue when he was moved to a relief role, I’m impressed. If this team’s going to have autumn magic, it’s going to take magic from everyone on the roster, and Kevin’s public committment to team-first goes a long way toward reaching critical mass in the chain reaction that can achieve that. My admiration and $2.50 will get you a cup of coffee, and FWIW, Kevin, that cup’s on me.

  8. Derek Smith says:

Whoooo! Walker’s back! Not that Mercer did a bad job filling in, but he still was and is no Neil Walker. Snider in the lineup as well, which is another positive considering his lingering hamstring issues. He is still managing to play extremely well though, especially for dealing with a nagging injury. And I would be happy to see Correia give 5 decent innnings. With them calling up the guys they did, Correia doesn’t need to go 7 or 8, just a halfway decent 5. Will see how late I can stay up for this one, haha. Might have to DVR it, or at least the postgame. LETS GO BUCS! LETS GO ZOLTAN!

  9. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Today’s MULTI-LINE MONDAY OVER / UNDER (always for fun of course)

    LINE #1
Total Runs Allowed by Kevin Correia in Tonight’s Game
    Line is 2.5
(This is Total Runs, NOT Earned Runs)

    LINE #2
Total Hits + Walks by Jose Tabata in Tonight’s Game
    Line is 1.5

  10. Bradster says:

Cruz was DFA does this create another open spot on the 40 man?

  11. This from the poster who dissed Pedro somewhere around the 7th inning last night. The adventurous sports posting life of a couch potato is humbling, which is possibly evidence that the universe resulted from design not chance.

  12. Playoffs, I’ll wager 100 rasbuckniks on the UNDER on both.

  13. JAL says:

It does, 38 players on the 40–two openings.

  14. pattonbb says:

Shad Kahn may have traveled all over the world, but he obviously wasn’t paying attention if he thinks people in Europe don’t know the difference between the Jaguars and Steelers. My job requires a lot of international travel (or, I should say it used to). I’ve seen terrible towels hanging behind the bar in Madrid, Steeler helmets on display in Mannheim, and an entire mural of three rivers painted on a wall inside a bar in Antwerp, Belgium. Not to mention, I challenge anyone to visit Dublin or Galway without seeing black and gold somewhere. What an incredibly stupid comment.

Tabata quiets some of his critics (myself included) tonight with 3 hits. Lets Go Bucs!!!

  15. pattonbb says:

Playoffs, 100 large on both OVERS!

  16. RobertoForever says:

    @Officer Mancuso #11

    Was that self-deprecating humor?

  17. Boise Bucco says:

Ooooh, I think I’m gonna start my winning streak on this one…

    Line 1: 100 UNDER
    Line 2: 100 OVER

  18. @RobertoForever #16, you read it right.

  19. JMB says:

    LINE #1 — 100 on the OVER

    LINE #2 — 100 on the OVER

  20. JMB says:

  21. RobertoForever says:

    Tough lines!

Correia – I’ll go 50 UNDER, because I think his outing will be short-lived.

Tabata – He did hit the ball yesterday. I think he will do well, but 1 game back is tough to judge. Let’s go 25 OVER.

  22. RobertoForever says:

Haha, I hear ya. I tend not to pile onto guys, because listening to the radio and watching gameday seems to skew my perspective. When I go to game’s I see so much more than on the TV as well.

Here’s hoping Pedro makes any criticism seem petty.

  23. No way does Correia get left hanging out to dry if he tanks tonight.

  24. JaxBuc says:

Please sir, may I have a wager of 100 chimichangas on the OVER for line one.
And another 50 on the UNDER for line two.

Chase Headley will probably be responsible for the 3 runs KC gives up.
I’ll be very happy to be wrong on the under for Tabata.

  25. RobertoForever says:

Oh, and Happy Birthday to Joe Vitale!

If DK can put a hockey reference into a column on the Steelers, I can put a hockey s/o in a Pirates game blog. :D

  26. Bradster says:

JAL, thanks, maybe it is time for Leroux and Clement to be called up.

  27. Milo Hamilton says:

Welcome Maverick Lee Mercer to the world. 7 pounds, 11 ounces.

  28. Milo Hamilton says:

Hurdle says that’s all folks for Juan Cruz. They’ll release him if he clears. I believe that leaves 2 open spots on the 40 man. I wonder what the status of Juan Pierre is in regards to waivers. We could use the help.

  29. cosmo says:

    @ Playoffs

let me have 50 on the over on both lines.

  30. Milo Hamilton says:

On Juan Pierre – Ken Rosenthal reported that Pierre had yet to be placed on trade waivers as of August 16th.

  31. bman says:

Line 1: 50 on the UNDER
Line 2: 70 on the UNDER

  32. Mike C. says:

    @playoffs – I’ll go
    #1 100 on the OVER
    #2 50 on the OVER
    thank you

I’m still mentally tired from yesterday, but this this late west-coast starting time is annoying.

  33. DemonDachshund says:

    @Playoffs –
Line 1: 100 on UNDER. I don’t think he pitches very long, and Petco is pitcher friendly to help keep his longball-itis in check.
    Line 2: 100 on UNDER.

  34. Mike Shigley says:

Am I missing something? I count 26 on the active roster, when there should only be 25. Cruz got DFA’d and Mercer went on paternity leave, but Qualls came back from bereavement and Wilson and McPherson were recalled. That is a plus one, when the transactions should net to zero.

  35. Milo Hamilton says:

    Qualls isn’t back just yet.

  36. DemonDachshund says:

I think Hughes has to go back down, as he was only legally brought up for the Qualls bereavement. Not sure why that isn’t listed though.

  37. Bizrow says:

Crap, I gotta pay more attention to the line

Was going to go OVAH for both

100 nuke nuggets on the UNDAH for line one, that is 2 runs or less, right?

Tabata got a lot of grief today, so I say 100 nuggets on the OVAH for line 2

    Thanks Playoffs

224 in the lunatic nation, and I know I’ve missed quite a few

  38. Bizrow says:

Demon, I think you are right, there is something funky with Hughes being brought up after only 3 days in the minors

Maybe Mercer’s trip to paternity leave does something with that. Maybe Qualls isn’t back yet?

You would think though they would add Qualls as everyone else’s arm is probably in a sling after yesterday

  39. Bucco_Jax says:

    100 UNDER

    100 OVER

  40. Mike Shigley says:

Sorry. Maybe he hasn’t made it on a plane to San Diego. All I know is that he was supposed to be back, and is showing him on the 25 man roster.

  41. Bizrow says:

Its not like the FO won’t wait till the last minute to make an announcement ;-)

  42. Boise Bucco says:

Phillies up 8-5 over the Reds bottom of the 6th

Halliday still on the hill, Leake got knocked out after 4 1/3 after giving up 4 in the fourth

  43. OZ says:

    Line 1: 100 over
    Line 2: 100 under

  44. Reading says:

Guess I’m not getting what is so “heroic” about Correia starting tonight. He pitched two innings last night. B. Friend pitched 17 innings in a game, I believe. Haddix pitched 12 perfect innings and into the 13th.

  45. Milo Hamilton says:

Hurdle says Qualls will rejoin the team tomorrow.

  46. Chico says:

Line 1: 75 on the under
Line 2: 50 on the under

  47. lawnbeaver says:

You guys may have discussed this yesterday, but any thoughts on why Joggin Joe was recalled and not Alex Presley?

  48. JRay3 says:

No Pirates BP today probably wise given the marathon yesterday. Watched J-Mac and AJ throw and afterwards they both signed for the many Pirate fans…AJ came over and I got my picture with him and we talked briefly about his year, the Bucs being relevant and he stated we are trying to do it this year! Can’t wait to see him throw in person tomorrow.

  49. Milo Hamilton says:

I’ve been laughing about that all day. If he pitched 2 or 3 innings in the middle of the game it woulds go completely unnoticed. Guys pitch a couple of innings on consecutive days all the time.

  50. Boise Bucco says:

I wouldn’t say it’s heroic necessarily, but pitching on zero days rest, he’s not gonna get in but maybe 4-5 innings max, and there’s more of a risk of getting touched up for more runs, so it’s putting his stats in jeopardy. It might seem selfish that he’d be thinking of his stats, but he’ll be a free agent in the off-season, and he’ll be needing a team to sign him, and starters make a lot better money than bullpen guys do. So for him to go out there and put up 3 innings and get hit up for 3 runs, not gonna do great for his stats. So I’m looking at this as a team-first move, knowing that they really don’t have a lot of other options.

Now I’m not banking on 3 runs (I’m actually “banking” on less than that…) but that’s how I would read the situation.

  51. JRay3 says:

@ Playoffs – as for the lines tonight I will go:

line 1- 50 on the UNDER

Line 2- 50 on the UNDER

    Thanks and let’s go Bucs!

  52. cosmo says:

Phils leading 10-5 over Reds thru 6

  53. Boise Bucco says:

Phillies up on the Reds 10-5 now, top of the 7th

  54. RobertoForever says:

DK thought it was unusual and worthy of special note that Corriea would volunteer. To quote his morning blog…

““After being demoted to the pen (again), a 19-inning game in which he threw, want to take a guess who volunteered to start tomorrow? If that isn’t heart and a vet stepping up in a pennant race … then I don’t know what is.”

Point taken. Mega-kudos to Correia for pitching well and being a team-first player.”

  55. RobertoForever says:

I am just curious. When was the last time you saw a pitcher throw multiple innings on back to back days. I can’t recall any off the top of my head this season.

I will do some research, but just curious of your examples.

  56. Milo Hamilton says:

How about some love for Jared Hughes ? Pitching 2 innings yesterday after throwing 2.1 on Saturday. Heroic.

  57. Milo Hamilton says:

Sorry Roberto, we were posting at the same time. See #57.

  58. radio wave says:

    At playoffs:
75 on the under both lines.

  59. JRay3 says:

I will say this about Kevin Correia…he offered and I did not here that Wandy did and he threw the same two innings KC did yesterday.

Just saw Neil Walker run out with Jones and Bucs fans in attendance make some noise.

  60. Boise Bucco says:

haha I didn’t even notice the lineup…nice to see PRNW back in it!

I was thinking the same things about Wandy/Correia…they both pitched yesterday, would have been pretty cool to see Wandy get wins in consecutive games, but oh well. Let’s try not to have another 19-inning game, or it might happen…

  61. LuckyNKentucky says:

Milo’s signed Overbay ball takes on new significance. Lyle signs with the Braves and they assign him to Gwinnett. Ryota Igarashi was shocked at the news.

  62. JMB says:

    Good point.

Wandy has guaranteed $ for the next two years available, while KC will be a FA this off-season, so KC is taking the bigger risk. It is an impressive team first attitude.

  63. Jay Jax Fl via New Castle says:

Playoffs. 100 each on the over. Glad to see the Reds are losing. I see McLouth has been batting 3rd for Baltimore, on a side note…..Pearce was hitting cleanup for Houston for a bit……What does that mean????….Nothing…We need Cutch to get on track…..Any one recall his diving effort on a ball yesterday and wander why he didn’t go full extension?????…..Any one???!?….. being picky, but just saying.

  64. TDB1977 says:

I’ll take 100 on the over on both lines.

  65. JRay3 says:

@JMB – I am going to look out for you tomorrow…I am in Sec 108 for game tomorrow.

  66. DemonDachshund says:

Well, Wandy throwing 2 innings yesterday is apparently reason enough for him to not start tonight…

His willingness to take the ball gives him points for effort, since the safe thing for him as a free agent next year is to sit and nurse that ERA. But the team needs results. If KC goes 4+ tonight and gets the UNDER, I will call that pretty impressive work. If he goes out and serves up batting practice, that lacks heroism.

  67. RobertoForever says:

Hughes is the first guy I checked. He did it of course the last two days. Very unusual circumstances. He also pitched 1.1 and 2 IP on June 16 & 17 respectively.

I checked Cruz. Never pitched multi-inning appearances on consecutive days.

Resop – he has only had consecutive day appearances 4 times this season (not necessarily multi-inning, consecutive appearances). Only one time was it multi-IP, consecutive – 1.1 IP and 1.1 IP. Another time he pitched 0.2 IP and then 2.0 IP.

Grilli and Hanrahan have not pitched more than 1.0 IP in any game this year.

Qualls had 1 time this year. 0.2 IP and 1.2 IP.

Watson had 1 multi-IP, consecutive this year. 1.2 and 1.0 IP. Also had a 2.1 IP and 0.2 IP.

So none of the current Pirate relievers has done what KC has volunteered to do. And if he goes more than 1.1 IP today, KC will have done what NO Pirate pitcher has done. Seems unusual to me.

  68. JMB says:

    I’ll see you then!

    I’ll be in 106 Row 22.

  69. Arriba Wilver says:

Milo and other s dissing Kevin, I have a question for you—when was the last time you saw a guy pitch 2 innings in relief and START the next day?

I didn’t think so. Wrong question, my friends. (but I did understand what you were saying about Kristy). It may not be “heroic,” but it ain’t ” nothing.”

  70. McG says:

100 on over for line 1
100 on under for line 2

  71. Nate83 says:

    Line 1 – 75 on the under
    Line 2 – 50 on the over

  72. Bradster says:

Doesn’t Hughes have to go back down when Qualls comes to fulfill his re-assignment time?

  73. Milo Hamilton says:

Pascual Perez was actually the last Pirate to do it. 1981 I think. I was shocked that he actually found the ballpark 2 days in a row.

  74. RobertoForever says:

Agreed. Hughes was a surprise to me when he pitched longer than 1 IP.

And I amend my #68 statement. If KC pitches longer than 2.1 IP tonight, he will do what NO Pirate pitcher has done this year. ‘

    It is unusual.

  75. Reading says:

Sorry. Guy’s a baseball player. Take the mound. No heroics necessary. Not like he has a bloody sock, or took a helmet-to-helmet hit. That said, need a solid performance for however many innings he can go.

  76. Arriba Wilver says:

Milo–so it happens all the time, right?

  77. Milo Hamilton says:

Pascual Perez find the ballpark on consecutive days ? No. No it doesn’t.

  78. Mlrgenuine says:

Line #1 50 on the OVER

    Line#2 100 on the OVER

    Lets go Bucs!

  79. manny _sanguine says:

    Line 1 50 UNDER
    Line 2 50 UNDER

  80. Arriba Wilver says:

I retract my statement that I understood what you meant about Kristy.

  81. Boise Bucco says:

Reds losing 12-5 in the 9th

This might be the best chance we get for the rest of the season to really make up some ground in a hurry…the game that Cueto throws, he’ll be going up against Cole Hamels, so it’s not exactly a gimme. And the Phillies aren’t exactly the Astros.

  82. Arriba Wilver says:

Line #1. 50 on the Under

Line #2. 25 on the Over

  83. TDB1977 says:

Reds lost. Lets pick up a game on them tonight.

  84. RobertoForever says:

Here’s something weird. Mercer’s son’s initials are MLM.

    In roman numerals, that is 1950. And 19 + 50 = 69.

    69 is Mercer’s uniform number.

  85. Boise Bucco says:

@RF haha if someone were to text him that I’m pretty sure that’s what his reaction would be too

    69 DUDE WOAH

his new nickname’s gotta be either Bill or Ted

  86. Arriba Wilver says:

Sorry, Playoffs, the time got away from me, I know I’m too late. I was googling “how many times did Pasqual Perez find the ballpark on consecutive nights.?

  87. twentytwo22 says:

Don’t volunteer to start a game and then pitch like crap. You just cost your team a game.

  88. Drew71 says:

There goes the love for Correia.

    Must be an attitude thing

  89. Boise Bucco says:

Nah, it’s the first inning. Plenty of time to settle in.

  90. Eric Bowser says:

    Well that started great.

  91. Arriba Wilver says:

First time this year a pitcher started and gave up 2 runs in the first inning. Game over.

  92. Boise Bucco says:

Didn’t they give up an arm and a leg for Volquez? I think Latos was involved in that trade, wasn’t he?

  93. Eric Bowser says:

give Volquez until the 4th inning to implode

  94. Eric Bowser says:

Boise – I think he was more of a throw-in for the Padres to get Alonso and Grandal.

  95. DemonDachshund says:

In fairness to KC, he got little help from the defense there. Barmes almost got the 2nd hit, then Barajas passed ball that killed a possible DP, then Walker bobbling the chopper that once again could have been a DP.

Only the Barajas play was really a bad one, but pretty sure that would have left it 1-0.

  96. Drew71 says:

I’m ready to implode now. Too many hot peppers for dinner.

  97. JohninOshkosh says:

Must be that “marine layer” Vin Scully and Ray Fosse are always babbling about.

  98. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Just an FYI, I’m probably not gonna be able to update the standings until Wednesday evening, and Arriba you were a tad late on the wager, but I am willing to count it if you so desire.

  99. Arriba Wilver says:

Thanks, Playoffs, but late is late, so don’t count it.

  100. Chico says:

I think my under wager is in big trouble. Hoping KC gets the out here and they pinch hit for him next inning…

  101. Arriba Wilver says:

Dinner? Wasn’t that 6 hours ago, Drew?

  102. RobertoForever says:

Haha, Arriba is scared off by KC’s 2-run first inning.

  103. Playoffs by 2012 says:

    Wise call Arriba

  104. Milo Hamilton says:

Does the definition of a quality start get dumbed down if the guy pitched the day before ?

  105. Boise Bucco says:

ack…looks like my winning streak’s gonna have to wait ’til tomorrow…

  106. JohninOshkosh says:

I’m not sure what I think is the worst professional sports venue name: Petco Park or Quicken Loans Arena.

  107. RobertoForever says:

KC is my hero. He can successfully bunt Barajas to 2nd

  108. RobertoForever says:

And Hustlin Jose gets a single! Lost first bet and halfway to losing the 2nd. Woohoo

  109. DemonDachshund says:

    @JohninO –

Going to have to go with People’s Natural Gas Field in Altoona.

The company’s name has made me chuckle since elementary school, and putting Field after it just makes it better/worse.

  110. pattonbb says:

    stupid ballpark…..

  111. Reading says:

Sounded like a TNDP call there on Cutch’s out.

  112. DemonDachshund says:

Sigh, should’ve been 3-1 with Tabby on 3rd and Snider on first.

  113. DemonDachshund says:

What is it about the Padres that makes the Bucs play like Little Leaguers?

  114. Playoffs by 2012 says:

What is it about the Padres that makes the Buccos just wilt??

  115. Reading says:

Next hero, please. Seem to recall Greinke pitching to a couple of batters, getting tossed, and then pitching the next day. Not sure if every pitch got laced and whether other team was spotted three runs.

  116. JohninOshkosh says:

You are correct, sir. That IS the worst name. But funny.

It’s a tough league. Players are in the majors for a reason. There will be no easy game/series for rest of the season. Don’t care if it is the Cubs, Padres, Astros or whoever. Dangerous endeavor to look at schedules and think yours is so much easier. Don’t think Hurdle or Pirates will do that but it is always one game at a time.

  117. aglebagel says:

In regards to my Steelers/International post on the morning thread:

Ok, yeah, now that I read over it again, I can see that you were not referring to me. My bad, all the way. Wow, thanks for clarifying.

  118. DemonDachshund says:

    @Reading –

Greinke went 3 innings in the second game, giving up 3 earned runs on 5 hits and 2 walks. So, about the same as KC.

  119. Arriba Wilver says:

    DD–agree with you there.

  120. DemonDachshund says:

I’m really not referring to the score or the opponent when I’m talking about the Pirates’ play here… Defensively, they’ve make sketchy plays in every inning so far, and it’s cost them at least one run, possibly two.

The other teams are major leaguers, so you will get pounded some nights and shut down others, but staying focused on defense is something you should be able to control to some degree.

  121. Arriba Wilver says:

Dd–I was referring to the People’s Natural Gas comment.

  122. JohninOshkosh says:

Barajas will not come close to batting his weight this season.

  123. JMB says:

Wow, it’s empty looking on tv.

  124. JMB says:

    Rough game for Snider.

    0fer3 w. 3 K’s.

  125. Boise Bucco says:

Wow, got home and got on twitter–by the comments I was guessing the score was 11-0.

We can come back from this.

  126. DemonDachshund says:

Eh, even if they don’t come back, I’d honestly written this game off coming into it. While losing a 19 inning game is tough, winning one can’t feel all that good in the long run either.

Just need AJ to be AJ and Jason Marquis to be Jason Marquis tomorrow, and all should be fine.

  127. Drew71 says:

Arriba – boy is THAT a straight man comment. Except I’m the one who ate peppers tonight

  128. RobertoForever says:

    @Boise Bucco,

I know, right? KC is 4 outs from a quality start. 4 1/3 with 2 ER after 2 scoreless last night.

  129. RobertoForever says:

PETCO taketh away. But it also giveth.

  130. Jay Jax Fl via New Castle says:

    Cudos to KC….

  131. pattonbb says:

Nice job by Correia tonight. He kept us in it. Defense didn’t do him any favors either.

Now lets get some hits. Tired of watching the Padres push us around.

  132. Boise Bucco says:

SD broadcasters…”his curveball is more like Elle MacPherson–good-lookin’!”

  133. JMB says:

    +200 for me tonight!

  134. Boise Bucco says:

HEYYYYY Tabata with that first pitch smash for a double and the OVER!

haha believed in ya the whole way :) now don’t go gettin’ picked off

  135. Boise Bucco says:

Man, Black’s crazy to pull Volquez…dude’s got 10 K’s, absolutely killing Bucs today.

But by all means, get to the bullpen…haha maybe you should put a lefty in there too!

  136. JRay3 says:

Couple of quick observations from the park…very gutsy effort by KC has kept us in it….great first pro inning turned in from Kyle McPherson his curve ball is something…ball has exploded off Walker’s bat todaynand what about Tabata with two hits?

Come on Cutch we can do this!

  137. Playoffs by 2012 says:

  138. Boise Bucco says:

Padres’ broadcasters talking about Cutch’s K like it was the last out of the game…lots of ballgame left

  139. Boise Bucco says:

SERIOUSLY, 7th inning, 2-run ballgame, and they’ve already announced the “Carl’s Jr. Star of the Game”

It was Edinson Volquez, but still, SERIOUSLY

  140. Reading says:

Now would be an opportune time for a jack.

  142. twentytwo22 says:

All these games in August McCutchen could have changed with one swing and he’s failed. Some guy named Brach schooled him. Votto learned to take a walk. McCutchen is having a hard time balancing walking/swinging.

San Diego is terrible and the Pirates can’t perform in their games. There is a difference between 70 win baseball and 90 win baseball. The Pirates don’t know how to raise their game. They also have no ability to smell an opportunity and seize it. The focus, intensity, and execution has not been consistent enough this month. Bad leadership from the top down. Good teams should know when to bring it and overcome teams they should beat. I don’t accept this is something they have to learn. This is something that can be rallied from within by a strong manager or player. 30 games of this. Nothing sticks. No momentum. Flatlining. The Pirates should be good enough to beat a 17 game sub .500 team in an empty stadium.

  143. Boise Bucco says:

You know, Barajas is due to get a hit ever 1.9/10 times…eventually he’ll be due

  144. JMB says:

All those meatballs and no booms.

  145. twentytwo22 says:

St. Louis begged the Pirates to beat them Saturday. San Diego is begging to get beat.

  146. Boise Bucco says:

I’m gonna chalk this one up to a after-19-inning-game hangover, cause I know they can school San Diego

  147. Playoffs by 2012 says:

    twentytwo22 you are pure cancer.

  148. Playoffs by 2012 says:

    and I genuinely hate you.

  149. Boise Bucco says:

Lookit this guy–Wilson K’s the side! Way to go rook!

  150. Reading says:

Easy in hindsight, but maybe one of the Indy guys should have started. Might be up 1-0. Good thing Padres are not going to be the Wild Card opponent.

  151. JMB says:

    Golden Sombrero

  152. twentytwo22 says:

19 inning game and win yesterday. They have a mix match rag-tag pitching staff that yields 3 runs THREE RUNS and this offense couldn’t score 4 runs in this game started by a guy they knocked out of the 4th inning 10 days ago. This is a disgraceful performance. One of the worst of the season. Maddening given the nature of the win yesterday. I wish Jim Leyland was our manager because he knows when to kick a team in the ass. That is not Hurdle’s style so we need a player to do it.

I spit on the MVP award McCutchen won’t win.

  153. JMB says:

I think they would’ve needed a shutout to win this game after yesterday.

    Oh well, we’ll get’em w. A.J. tomorrow.

  154. Boise Bucco says:

Hangover game? Hangover game. Go get some sleep. Tomorrow’s another day.

  155. Boise Bucco says:

@22–dude, you don’t mean that. Slumps happen. He’s “only” hitting .260 for August.

  156. twentytwo22 says:

I just spit in the garbage can.

They could still win the series but tonight’s loss stinks.

I’m getting tired of the Pirates being the slow kid that holds the class back. It’s time they graduate. It’s time.

I’ll remain optimistic at a macro level though. They’ll get them tomorrow. Yay!

  157. Chuck H says:

13 more strikeouts-WOW! What is wrong with this team? Do we need another hitting coach? The one we have sure isn’t earning his money. Andrew has caught the strikeout bug, too. A strikeout does nothing for the team-doesn’t move a runner up or does not score a run, nothing is good about a strikeout, except for the pitcher doing it.

  158. Boise Bucco says:

As far as your criticism of Cutch–it was spot on, but what are you gonna do, bench him? Yeah, he’s in a slump. So is Barajas, Alvarez, Snider, Wandy, what are you gonna do with them? You can platoon Hot Rod, Pedro and Snider, you could possibly send Wandy to the ‘pen, but that’s not why they traded for him…

You can’t bench Cutch. You can’t really even sit him for a game–he’s the MVP. So we can note his slump, and we can call him on it and discuss how bad he’s been, but it changes nothing. He’s gonna play through it, and that will be that.

  159. Boise Bucco says:

  160. JRay3 says:

Well just checking back in to the hotel and it was a depressing walk back from the park…another game where we had chance after chance for a big hit and did not get it. Leaving 11 men on base is a recipe for disaster. Awesome to see so many Bucs fans out at the game and hearing them chant in the ninth of a road game was electric.

On a bright note it sure was fun to see the impressive debuts of both Justin Wilson and Kyle McPherson, it certainly seems the club is stocked with a lot of potentially good to great arms!

Still two games left in the series and our ace goes tomorrow and than a TBD starter goes for SD Wednesday afternoon….need to bounce back and take this series!
