Game: Pirates (67-56) vs. San Diego Padres (55-70)
Time: 6:35 p.m.
Site: Petco Park, San Diego
TV, radio: Root Sports, 93.7 The Fan
Here is the Trib’s Bucco Blog for updates from Rob Biertempfel on the scene.
Here is the live box score.
And here is the Pirates’ lineup vs. San Diego LHP Andrew Werner …
- Jose Tabata, LF
- Neil Walker, 2B
- Andrew McCutchen, CF
- Garrett Jones, 1B
- Gaby Sanchez, 1B
- Pedro Alvarez, 3B
- Michael McKenry, C
- Clint Barmes, SS
- James McDonald, RHP

Mercer does not need to be added today, right?
Good to see Jonesy getting his everyday starts. The man is on FIRE!
We will also see if McKenry can break his 0 for 18 streak.
Let’s hope for a repeat performance from JMac tonight and the lineup takes it to this rookie.
Got a baaaaaadddd feeling about this one.
Tabata (7 g) and Barmes (4 g) with the longest hitting streaks on the team.
STAND UP TO CANCERS ON THIS BLOG!!
Today’s PICK ‘EM (always for fun of course)
What Will Joel Hanrahan Get in Today’s Game?
WIN
LOSS
SAVE
NO DECISION / NOT PITCH
*** MAXIMUM IS 100 (FAKE) UNITS ON ANY SINGLE LINE ***
DK: I’ll take 100 on SPLINTERS IN DERRIÈRE.
Dejan,
Enjoyed the faux Onion.
However, I still had little problem with pitching McCutchen over Hanrahan (reasons on other thread.) Non-save situations are not Hanrahan’s best Center Stage. Certainly not “inexplicable” to use your choice word.
Once Padres stole 2nd, I would have walked Headley.
I thought your post about the Front Office giving Hurdle a bucket to put out fires with many holes in it was more to the point. Hurdle can only play the players he’s given.
WE GOTTA BEAT THIS BUNCH OF SAD SACKS TODAY!!!!
By the way, in the last 12 games McCutch is batting .218 . . . . . . . . . the same .218 he batted after the All Star break last season.
I’ve seen that “try to pull everything” sing before!
I consider myself a “Christian” person, but I sure don’t like these “Padres”…
It’s interesting because on the radio pre-game last night, they interviewed Daniel McCutchen. He talked about being woken up at 2am in Syracuse, heading to clubhouse to pack up, and then getting on a 6am flight, landing in SD at 11am PDT. That means by the time he pitched that fateful changeup at 154AM EDT, he had been up almost 24 hours.
Anyway, the most ironic part of the interview was when they were asking him about last year’s 19-inning loss to Atlanta. D-Cutch talked about being the last option in the game, since Hanrahan had been up and down several times in the game. He also said that he was just up there playing backyard ball and throwing anything up there. Then, ironically, when asked about getting over that loss, he said that now he has a daughter, that it is easy to put those things in perspective, and see what was important in life.
When he said that, I cringed, thinking, I hope that he doesn’t end up laying awake in his hotel room, wondering about what is important in life…
@ Ryan – yes out here in SD…just hoping I get to witness one win before heading back home. Met another blogger here @ JMB at game last night that was cool.
Here at the bar across from Petco and talking with a bunch of Bucs fans still venting from last night, we could be our own talk show this afternoon!
@ Bizrow- today is the third day of Mercer paternity leave, he will need to be activated before Friday game.
Facing a AAA arm today, would certainly be nice if the Bucs could jump onto early, something we have not done a lot of this season.
@ Playoffs- good afternoon….time to get back into the win column.
I will go 25 on the SAVE today.
thanks and Let’s Go Bucs!
I realize first base has been an issue all year, but do we need Garrett and Gaby both playing first?
WOW
DK is entering a 100 fake units entry on “ND/no pitch” for @Playoffs line!
#HistoryWillBeMade #9inningsToGo #LisaIsAlive
Playoffs –
Please give me 50 on the SAVE for today…keepin’ the faith! Thanks.
Playoffs, is splinters an option?
100 on no decision/not pitch.
I think Dejan is on to something.
BEAT
EM
BUCs
This is gettin’ re-posted since no one said anything about the game thread bein’ up…THANKS ERRYBODY–anyway…
So as far as the batting order is concerned, I wanted to find out which spot produced the highest batting average. Of course the 3rd spot was gonna be highest, and it was–Cutch has been holding it down for most of the year. 3rd spot produces a .343 average, when you factor in the couple times that Tabata and McLouth spot-started for him. But we knew this…
What spot came next was what I wanted to know…I had a feeling, but I wanted to be sure–and I was right. The second spot–PRNW’s “normal” spot. The second spot in the order has produced a .267 average this year, with a .317 OBP and .756 OPS. Not too shabby. PRNW’s played 50 games in the 2nd spot, with Harrison getting 19 starts in the second spot and Tabata 18.
County Commissioner GFJ is hitting .313 when he bats 4th, with 14 HR’s and a .934 OPS (!) LEAVE HIM THERE HURDLE HE’S DOIN’ GOOD. Or move him to the 2nd spot, where he would SURELY hit a bases-empty Grand Slam during a rain delay and the umps would count it (I’m convinced the 2nd spot is lucky and you can’t tell me otherwise.)
I found this amusing, in that “only the Pirates could do this” kind of way…the 7th spot in the order is getting on base more often than the 1st spot in the order, which is funny considering who’s usually in the 7th spot…the breakdown in average for 1st/7th is the same (.230), but OBP (.275/.292) and OPS (.637/.670) is higher for the 7th spot.
bahaha DK’s about to join me in the negative column…
…on that note, @Playoffs, if you don’t terribly mind,
I’ll be taking a SAVE for 100!
Also, did you see Clarence vs. 22 last night!? I thought 2 negatives would make a positive, but it didn’t, it just made more negative…my 2nd grade teacher was waaay wrong
Shout out from the Grand Poobah himself!!
DK, YOU GOT IT AND GOOD LUCK!!
Bartolo Colon suspended 50 games for testosterone.
Fat, doped and stupid is no way to go through life, son.
Gotta go with DK –
100 for the No Play/No Decision…
@Playoffs
Please sir, may I have 25 corn tortillas on the NO DECISION option. I think he gets in the final inning while the bucs are up by five runs and there is no save opp.
@BB
I tend to ignore 22′s dribble…….read a game that the team has been up and down and so is he.
Rides with the tides of thar Pirates……..ARRRR
@ Playoffs
here’s hoping for a freaking blow out win tonite.
100 on the no decision, sir
Hey, wasn’t Bartolo Colon just heralded a couple years ago for his “comeback” with the Yankees or something? I seem to remember something about how he was tearing it up, and this was after he was out of baseball for a year and a half or something.
John
Is Sutcliffe wanting Colon to be deported also?
@Playoffs
After two months hiatus it’s time to get out of the negative hole I’m in (or go deeper in it)…
100 smackers on the SAVE please.
BTW-
Nice sulia post, Dejan
I would be remiss not to remind everyone that The Onion was conceived and launched in beautiful Madison, Wisconsin. It was based there for years.
A favorite:

GLASS!!!! Good to see you again!!
@Playoffs,
I think the Bucs will not get swept, so that leaves me with a no decision vs a save (win seems remote).
So I will go 25 units on the SAVE for tonight.
Beat em Bucs!
Thanks Playoffs! Good to be back. I guess my gambling rehab stint didn’t go too well.
I’ll take 100 on the no pitch tonight for the Hammer.
@Playoffs:
50 oncologist units on SAVE, please.
@playoffs
100 on the no decision/not pitch
25 on the save please
Why the H– can’t we beat the Padres? Everybody else beats them. Do they own a curse over the Bucs? We can’t beat them no matter where we play them. Daniel McCutchen got here just in time to lose a game for us. I would have selected Joel Hanrahan to pitch anyway. Still too many strikeouts, and against noname pitchers. Don’t our batters have any discipline at all at the plate? They won’t swing at the first pitch, which is most always down the middle. Anyhow, we stink against some teams.
In anticipation of the 13 run outburst tonight and ensuing W, I was shopping around on Ebay looking for some good Bucco finds. Stumbled across this nice Andrew McCutcheon jersey. Pretty cheap, but come on man…
Here you go so you can all send hate email through the Ebay forum.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Andrew-Mccutcheon-Pittsburgh-Pirates-/271037589133?pt=US_Baseball_Fan_Shop&hash=item3f1b19668d
Is it also spelled McCutcheon on the jersey?
playoffs,
100 clams on NO DECISION.
Bats are going to wake up tonight. There won’t be any save opportunities.
Lets Go Bucs!!!
Happy to see so many new posters today. No matter how many times they were identically welcomed.
Happy to see several returnees.
Welcome to all.
Unless the Pirates lose. Then it musta been bad Karma.
@Boise
I think Colon was using some funky treatment, injecting stem cells or something in his arm to rejuvinate it.
They say things come in threes, thats two busts for MLB, and they sampled correctly, go figure…
Hopefully Friars wins don’t come in threes.
Dejan, regarding the tweets, don’t you know its sacrilidge to question the decisions of the BMTIB?
I know when I do it, I get blasted from the total supporters
That being said, it seems there is no urgency in NH and making this year special. He has two years left on his contract.
Its like he’s “learning” how to be a GM in a pennant race
Much like he “learned” how to trade at this level.
BTW, my Saturday 20 game plan went up 50% for next year.
But a beautiful letter from Slick Frank
We’re blowing a great chance here folks to be the story of the year
Just sayin
@Playoffs
I’ll take 100 on No Decision
Let’s Go Bucs!
Looks like it is right on the jersey I guess. But wow, looking at some of these things, lots of horrible knock off versions of these jerseys floating around out there.
@playoffs
I’ll go with 40 on the no decision/no pitch
One thing I just want to chime in on regarding Huntington and his roster moves. As much as I’d loved to criticize the guy up until this year, it’s kinda hard to knock him on this bullpen move. He’s pretty much done a terrific job at building bullpens every year he’s been around. If anything, I have to give him that much. No, Qualls should not be on the roster. Should have been DFA’s this morning even. But as far as D-Cutch goes, I have no problem with that. I think they were trying to learn how to respond after last year’s 19 inning game took the wheels off of this thing. Credit for trying to keep guys somewhat fresh, even if it didn’t work out.
And heck, if Cutch doesn’t make that catch in the bottom of the 9th, game is over anyway and the loss is tagged to Grilli. Then would anyone have a problem with anything today?
At playoffs:
75 on no decision.
Thanks
D-Cutch is probably the best athlete on our staff…A good guy to have on your 25…Long relief, pinch run……Dude has pitched well for us before, Hanny should’ve thrown last night, though….Let’s get the W tonight boys…….
Playoffs…..no decision option for 60 tallies, please………
Oh Crap….Werner’s looking like Cy…..just kidding.
We’re going to knock this kid out in 4 innings.
And Cutch strikes out again
@JoeBucco
Excellent point about Cutch and his awesome defense bailing out Grilli. I do wonder what the comments and tweets would have been about then? Criticism of AJ? PRNW? Cutch?
And away we go.
What? Another stolen base? No way!
Reassuring start.
JMac did that on purpose so he can induce a DP….its all good
Let’s try to get out of the 1st inning without the Padres getting a run! What is this BS – walking the 1st 2 guys you face. C’mon JMac – bear down!!!
This better not be an indication of what is in store for the Bucs tonight!
Headley hits a HR here I’m not paying anymore attention to today’s game.
I’m starting to get my normal feel back for the Buccos.
Its seems they can’t do anything right these days.
Funny, listening to Walk last night talk about how many comebacks these guys have had and yada yada yada…..made me realize why they’ve had to have so many comebacks.
Because the starters give up runs in the 1st inning.
@Gunner
I have a baaddd feeling.
You can’t have substandard pitching like this and continue to compete, let alone contend. Ticking time bomb.
J-Mac reverting back to 2 minutes between pitches. Been oitching for 10 minutes, nobody out. Come on Man!!
Got to be kidding me.
This rookie’s gonna throw a gem……..
@ Ryan – 58
I agree with you wholeheartedly. 3 walks in a row is absolutely unacceptable – this is Little League stuff.
Pick it up, JMac…………….NOW!!!!!!!
The Pirates are the industry leaders when it comes to giving up runs in the 1st inning.
Bar none.
Hey Hurdle, get your leadbottom out of the dugout and get this guy out of there.
I know it the scheme of things, JMac gives up 1 or 2 runs this inning, its not all bad if that’s all he gives up.
I’d rather have them early if you’re gonna give up anything, but c’mon man, enough 1st inning runs is enough.
The offense seems to ALWAYS have the pressure on them, back against the wall.
This segment of Pittsburgh Pirates baseball is brought to you by Yakety Sax!
http://bit.ly/Tvn6u3
Unreal. They may as well have gone to North Island and looked at the carriers, or Miramar Officer’s Club and reenacted the Top Gun scene.
3-0, isn’t this just delightful. The Pirates are playing like the 1962 Mets.
I am starting to really believe there is serious dissension on this team.
Note the time, an Ump actually called a guy out on a tag play.
19 innings……….downfall.
Is there any way we can get the Padres to go to the American League instead of Houston ?
Wow, got out of that…….Let’s hope that’s all they get today.
I can deal with JMac giving up 3 runs, if that’s all he does.
The biggest problem of that inning isn’t the 3 runs, its the amount of pitches thrown. BP will be taxed tonight.
Wait, is someone actually recommending that Hurdle pull J-Mac with 1 or 2 outs in the first inning?
Really?
whoa, whoa, whoa……you mean to tell me that a catcher threw out somebody?
Why steal 3rd in that situation?
They better get some baserunners this inning!
J-Mac isn’t even close with most of these pitches. I just don’t get it.
@RF
Yea, you read that correctly. I wasn’t gonna go there.
Maybe they should’ve brought in Hanrahan there in the 1st to shut it down.
The Pirates were 5th worst in the MLB for average runs given up in the 1st inning (0.71) coming into tonight’s game.
Where’s Daniel McCutchen when you really need him?
Just kidding, folks.
Jones is swinging that bat well right now, glad to see, always liked him
But when he’s ugly…….man.
Gotta get Jones in…..get at least one back this inning, especially with a leadoff double.
Come on Pedro.
Base hit, fly ball. Something.
@Ryan,
or at least Grilli.
I blame NH. Why would he trade for a guy like this
Productive out…….though according to GAMECAST it went to SS and Jones still got over….
weak?
@RF
I agree, that guy sucks!
Bring back up a rookie!! Send JMac to AAA
3-3 here would be nice. A game reboot.
I hate to say this, but I smell a double play
Or an internal server error instead.
I’m telling you, we’re going to light this Werner kid up tonight.
What? 6-4-3 double play? Lovely…..
@Ryan
I blam you for the Fort’s problems
#FreeRyan
@Reading
3-3 would be, but I’ll take 3-1 and a settled down JMac to start.
or #FreeTonySanchez
@RF
YOU CAN’T!!!!!
I called him out right before he got hot and made me look like a chump….
Well Pedro did his job, and the guy we’ve all been clamoring for more ABs (McKenry) hits into an inning-ending DP. Not gonna cut it, Fort.
Werner gave up 8 runs in his last AAA start.
#HateWhenImRight
I cringe every time mcHenry or Sanchez bat with a runner on first. It seems over half of their at bats end with ground balls to short.
A typical Pirate inning – strand some runners
Hmm
Tony Sanchez…
I actually would like to see him be the catcher called up in September.
Now, I’ll take a 1 pitch out ANYDAY, but especially after a 30 pitch 1st.
Thank you Cameron Maybin.
Some guys JMac just needs to go after…..Baker was one of them. Too many pitches.
wish Ohlendorf was pitching tonite.
thank God Werner went to the Jose Scabata School of Bunting
THAT was a nice play!
Gunner
i was thinking the same thing.
Gamecast froze, what happened?
OK, it came back to life.
I haven’t got onto Gamecast yet, wanted to read the comments and see if I could guess how the Bucs were doing…I’m guessing 8-1 Pirates lead
@BB
Bingo, nailed it.
JMac’s on a no-no bid
aww man I was sooo close
Ryan
I would prefer Jose Morales. Solid veteran backstop. There will be time for Tony.
Don’t let Cy Werner fool you, he’s beaten the Washington Wild Things twice.
@RF
I know and I can’t argue that. Just wanna see what TS can do.
I know his batting stats are pretty Clint Barmes like.
haha who said it a couple/few weeks ago…liked it better when the Pirates sucked!? How apt is that? No drama, no gut punch losses, you know what to expect…ahhh the life…
One hit thru three innings against a rookie pitcher.
Awesome.
Werner pitched in the Frontier League, and he’s mowing down the Pirate
hitters with ease.
@Boise Bucco
It sucks to be emotionally invested again…
Way to look like clowns…..
Understand that pitchers always have an advantage, I don’t care who they are.
The Buccos should get after him after they see him a time or two.
“All is well!”
No kidding…ALL THIS PRESSURE UGH NOW MOLINAVENABLE’S UP AGAIN
of course a guy named everth hits a bunt single, why not. Now Venamolina’s gonna hit a Granny with only 1 person on base
now that was an interesting play. LIke Casey Stengel said when managing the 1962 Mets:
“Can’t anybody here play this game?????”
Didn”t Cabrera get 50 games for PED’S. My bad, wrong Cabrera.
How did the BMTIB miss this Werner kid. Don’t we scout the Frontier League.
double play time.
You know what would fix it? We should re-sign Lyle Overbay and Matt Diaz. Remember all the chemistry last year? That was awesome.
The play was a bunt that Pedro fielded, threw to Barmes at second, and on to first for a double play.
Cy Werner has an interesting mix of pitches and throws with great sideward plane.
THROW A CHANGEUP I HEARD HE CAN’T HIT A CHANGEUP
@Reading,
Thanks.
@BB
That’s too easy…..
Are you freaking kidding me with the SB crap?
Below the belt?
Negative thought: keep thinking about Wild Card game (assuming Pirates don’t fold) against Braves, and D. Ross or Hinske hit walk-off with Maholm pitching complete game. Ex-Pirate syndrome.
I think the Padres need a few more baserunners.
There
Now SOMEONE walked Headley after going down 3-0
Everyone happy now.
You guys have ruined Headley for me. Can’t get Blazing Saddles outta of my noggin everytime he comes to bat.
I do have to say that I have enjoyed listening to Dick Enberg. He has lost a little but still a great broadcaster.
That’s funny how Ohlendorf sucked that last start, and the Padres straight up demoted him…wonder how often that happens, especially among teams not vying for Wild Card spots
McDonald has forgotten concept of work fast throw strikes.
What is Quentin doing in the batters box with that bouncy motion ?
On the play, Pedro actually charged in and fielded the ball between home and the pitcher’s mound, and then turned and made the peg to second. That’s why I thought it was a great play. Not a routine turn.
Can we PLEASE keep all Ray Miller references out of the blog??
I’m so tired of hearing “Work fast, throw strikes, change speeds”
@Reading
Thanks again, I read what happened, but figured it had to be a pretty good play on Pedro’s part.
Better move that guy to 1st. He’s too fat for 3rd.
OK let’s get a few guys on and set the table for Daydro this inning.
In Ray Miller’s day, they didn’t worry as much about pitch counts either…..Maybe they should just scrap those too. (I wouldn’t mind that actually)
I think the next time Cutch gets caught stealing, he should work on his Lloyd McClendon routine and LITERALLY steal the base…then GFCCJ could make a shrine of it and BOOM there’s your motivation for the homestretch
That a boy!
Like to see Jones double it up again….
Classic shot on ROOT. Showed a girl brhind the plate with an old Padres hat on.
Brown with yellow SD. I had forgotten that those were the Padres colors at one time.
Gabby, you’ve been sitting at .216 for a while now…feel free to get hot
Gotta roll all, have fun…got football practice to get too
Get em Bucs…
@ryan
Did not make statement as Ray Miller reference. When you work fast you get in a rhythm and your fielders stay ready. The strike part is obvious to be succesful. Jmac was doing this when he was successful.
They really are in a hurry to get on that plane, aren’t they.
One run is nice…but GIJ’s base-running is not funny anymore
at least Daydro drove in one run; but Jones’s baserunning is horrible
Dayyyyyyydro (dayyyyyyydro!)
@Ryan
I guess I should also credit Barmes with a quick turn at second. Don’t want to be a hater.
I think players have become so accustomed to outfielders throwing to the plate above their cut off man irrespective of any chance for a play at the plate that Jones just assumed the ball was going through to home.
Hurdle needs to get somebody ready & get him outta there before this gets out of hand. Like now.
See Playoffs, every decision he makes at third is a problem. In this case he must have presumed they would throw home so he made the decision to bring the slow footed Jones (who was thrown out the other night), but SD realized it was hopeless to get Cutch so the threw to third. Leyva can’t comprehend such heavy duty thought processing, thus makes bad decisions generally.
It’s just my opinion.
Honestly, wouldn’t mind Hurdle having a quick hook today…just to kinda show the starters that they’re not immune to it anymore. He’s been leaving them in as a sign that he’s got confidence, but anymore there’s really not too much confidence to go around. Way too many baserunners. No reason to not have a 1-2-3 inning at this point.
ROOT lost video. Obviously Nick Leyva’s fault.
double steal.
Wow, bases just for the taking.
They have technical difficulties – so do we – BAD COACHING
From a Padres’ fan POV, this has been an AWESOME series. I would be falling over myself praising my manager for attempting a double steal with the pitcher up, trying to prevent a DP. Great move.
On the other hand, I’m not a Padres fan…
Must have pulled the plug running from Dan Potash wanting to know more about the base running gaffe
That double steal just might have been the lowest point of the second half. Hard to look any worse than this.
J-Mac needs a couple quick innings and some runs. Time to slap Werner around!!!
Werner took 7 pitches too…nice at bat for a AAA pitcher.
Don’t they have a DH in the minors?
When does the coaching staff get a maintenance day off. Some of them need one
Padres leaving men on bases here. Need to make them pay for that.
No video problem with the “Grease” Nissan commercial, of course.
I think this technical difficulty is a “blessing in disguise”.
Yeah, I’m with you on that one, Reading. The Padres feed has been saturated with Peyton Manning Buick ads. As if Peyton Manning drives a Buick!
By the way, did you beat Chelsea FC today?
Now go get him Hurdle.
@Johnin
You know, for the first time in my life, I actually set up to tape a soccer game because I thought there might be some shots of Reading, England. Always wanted to see what that place looked like. Anyway, game was at Chelsea, and I believe Chelsea won 3-2.
Watching Padres broadcast since ours was in technical difficulty. Anyway, Padres having a Beerfest on Sep. 7th.
Video has returned. So glad I can actually see The Great Cy Werner continue his mastery.
haha Hanny gettin’ a save isn’t looking so good…I blame DK
Reading:
That is funny about the soccer. I watch my fair share of Premiership games on Fox Soccer Channel and I can’t recall them showing any exterior shots of the neighborhoods or town. Doesn’t seem like something their telecasts do.
@ MIlo – 179
As former voices of the Pirates, you have to be as disgusted as I am with what we are seeing this evening.
And Stinkcinnati is winning again!!
Wow. The apathy is really showing today. When Walker does not run hard something is wrong. How we can let this happen against this team again is beyond unacceptable. As i said last week, I want this team to win soooo bad. But, what do I see as soon as I get home from work? I see 3 straight weak ground outs by our 2, 3 and 4, with Walker not running hard. So bad.
Apparently, the Pirates did not receive the league-wide Memo on how to beat the Fathers.
@Gunner
Spitting nails. They look like it’s the 15th round against Joe Frazier. This 20 games in 20 days thing is so overblown. The organization has acted like it’s the Bataan Death March or something. It’s too hard.
But look at the bright side. We got to see The Great Cy Werner in his prime. Something to tell the grandkids about.
Padres announced they are putting up a statue of longtime radio man Jerry Coleman.
Cubs have a Caray statue. Brewers will unveil Uecker statue next Friday. Broadcasters often mean more to fans than the franchise’s iconic players.
Maybe the Pirates should erect a Bob Prince statue at PNC.
Padres, Dodgers and Orioles apparently have the blueprint on how to beat the Bucs. 2W 14L. WOW.
I wished that someone else in this NL pennant race (like the Reds) would face the Padres and get their butts kicked. The Dodgers, of course. will face them several times next month.
yo Gaby-Gaby
Been waiting to use that one.
Wait, dude just hit a home run and not a weak roller. Awesome!
Huh, lookit that…solo shot, first pitch…THERE’S LIFE IN THEM THAR BATS
@Oshkosh
Any word on the Cy Werner statue ?
This game is far from over. Padres have a suspect pen. I’m not sure stoner Dale Thayer is oozing with confidence after Jonesy last night.
Let’s see what they can do with a real ML pitcher now.
We need to turn the new guy’s W into a ND.
Of course, a few weeks ago, when the Reds played SD, the Padres blew saves in the 9th in at least two games.
Resop is pitching. I wonder if I have time to paint my porch before the Pirates come up again?
@ Milo – 185
I am rip roaring mad at them. I really think there are internal problems, dissension etc.
Do you think I am on to something or have I gone senile?
@Gunner
No. I think they’re just playing crappy. Probably Leyva’s fault.
@John
Resop is done. 11 pitches, 1-2-3 inning. First of the night.
Brach pitched 3 days in a row…
Just wanted to point that out. Padres are playing this series like the playoffs. Their fans gotta love this series.
11 pitches? Uh oh. Resop might be unavailable for Friday.
@Roberto:
He did a great job. He’s been effective. Just knocking his slow work style a bit. Oh, I see Ronnie Cedeno is batting .342 since the ASB.
This Gregerson guy is basically laughing at us. Dude hangs everything and we can do is whiff.
One last chance to avoid the dreaded sweep.
Bad. Top of the order rolls over like dogs again. Maybe GI will get a leadoff HR next inning and start something. Clearly the top of the order is throwing in the towel this evening.
@ Milo – 199
Maybe Leyva is a graduate of the Frank Oceak University of Coaching 3rd base. I can’t even blame things on Tabata.
They really stink these days.
I just did some research. The 2 runs allowed by Cy Werner tonight are the most he’s ever given up in a big league game. Good work Buccos !
@BB
Hanrahan has done that 3x as well this year. Funny, how a manager will do that when his team is winning close games three days in a row.
Resop definitely “unavailable” on Friday now.
who is that masked man in LF?
Taking one for the team in a second grueling inning. On another note, nice play by Tabata.
Resop 6 up 6 down, good job.
Here we go:
back to back to back jacks and then Hammer time!
Well, a secured spot in the WC was nice while it lasted. Are we at 82 Ws yet?
haha here’s an idea…
Since the first inning seems to be the bug in the Bucs’ butt, throw Hanny in the first inning, Grilli in the 2nd, and then let the starter go from the 3rd on.
Milo
It’s not Leyva’s fault. It’s that god blessed nissan “Grease” commercial.
DK JINXED THEM
THANKS
ENJOY THAT 100
My overtly negative postt could only evoke a “tapper” from GFJ. I’ve lost my touch.
I do not love thee, California.
Thanks for the solid effort tonight fellas. It really showed….
Practice @ 1:00 tomorrow in Washington Pa. Got to learn how to hit Frontier League pitching.
Today’s game could be the low point of the season.
Scratch that, The 5 loses to the Padres could doom the season.
@JRay
Feel for ya man. Go to all 3 games in sunny San Diego and you get not 1 win. Almost criminal.
Hey they’re only a 10 game winnning streak away from 1st place and a shaved Greg Brown
San Diego USED to be one of my favorite cities to visit…
Seems somewhat appropriate given the circumstances……http://youtu.be/5_H-LY4Jb2M
The NO DECISION / NOT PITCH wins today. Don’t know about you all, but I’m gonna enjoy the off day tomorrow. See you for THREE PLAY FRIDAY.

First Place at the end of the season will win:
(1) BRAND NEW PITTSBURGH PIRATES FITTED NEW ERA 59FIFTY HAT
Second Place at the end of the season will win:
(1) BRAND NEW PITTSBURGH PIRATES EARTH DAY GIVEAWAY HAT
Third Place at the end of the season will win:
(1) 2012 Topps Roberto Clemente Card
The Pirates, right now, couldn’t even beat a AA team. To lose to a raw rookie is about as low as you can go. And what other manager would allow his starting pitcher to walk the first 3 batters that he faced. Shame on Hurtle and shame on McDonald. In fact, shame on the whole damn team. I don’t care any more whether they win or lose.
Thanks, JRay. Thanks a lot.
I don’t know who to blame for this loss.
I hope Lisa tells me soon.
I blame the grey uniforms.
Pretty embarrassing.
The Bucs are tanking again. Watch it and weep.
Well totally at a loss of words and I can’t believe I used vacation time for this. If only we could start the game in the second inning and play 8 inning games. So frustrating to constantly be down 1,2,3 -0 so early and always have to fight back.
By night’s end we may no longer be in a playoff spot, somebody anybody step up and right this ship quickly. Six game home stand versus Brewers and Cardinals will be pretty telling.
Going to be a long trip back home, sigh.
sorry JRay…go to Pacers, get your head straight
I’m calling for the banishment of the alternate hat and softball shirt uniform. Tired of that uniform.
Sorry, JRay, probably not the right time to be kidding you.
So much for the Reds facing the Phils’ aces. Then again, I guess it really doesn’t matter anymore.
@JRay,
On your way back through Sky Harbor, grab a Blue Burrito carne asada burrito. Always cheered me up back in the day.
15-23 not looking like much of an absolute lock right now.
@ Arriba Wilver – no worries at all.
@ Boise Bucco, @ Playoffs – thanks for the suggestions may have to take them both up.
How do you lose 3 games to those 3 starters that the Padres put out there?
By not playing well?
Is that you AW? You sound like someone else….
I know who you mean, but it’s kinda looking like that, to me. Blame Neal for having the wrong players, blame Clint for making the wrong moves, but really, the players are not performing the same way they were when we were winning. Most of the announcers have made that point, and I know you can say they’re homers, but the evidence is on the field. To quote DK, it really is.
Arriba,
I agree with you. I blame the players the most.
Poor pitching, poor defense, and no timely hitting.
Yep, too many times . . .
Demon, you do not know how scary that feeling is to me. (#239)
I never really believed that our starting 9 was good enough to get a playoff spot. So being in this race is gravy to me. But I REALLY want to break the losing streak.
I did believe we were/are good enough. But I am starting to worry, too. If my math is correct, that’s a .395 winning percentage. They CAN turn it around, but they need to play better, pure and simple. Hopefully San Diego was just the Curse of the Padres.
Arriba. I thought it sounded great.
And. You guys are missing it. Completely.
How about putting the blame where it belongs.
Pirates are 1-13 since Dejan said 82 wins was a lock.
Well, there is that.
FRIENDS AND FELLOW INMATES,
DESPERATE TIMES CALL FOR DESPERATE MEASURES. I HAVE DECIDED ON A STRIKE. A LOWERCASE FONT STRIKE. A STRIKE AGAINST MEDIOCRE BASEBALL.
I’M NOT ASKING FOR MUCH. UNTIL THE BUCS RETAIN THEIR RIGHTFUL SPOT IN THE WILD CARD, I WILL CEASE USE OF MY LOWERCASE FONT. I URGE FELLOW INMATES TO DO THE SAME. FOR THE SAKE OF EYEBALLS EVERYWHERE, LET’S HOPE THIS DOESN’T LAST ANOTHER NINETEEN YEARS.
WE’VE WATCHED SOME PRETTY BAD BASEBALL THE LAST FEW YEARS, ALL WITH THE PROMISE THAT, DOWN THE ROAD. NOW THAT WE’VE GOT A TASTE OF IT THE LAST TWO YEARS, THERE’S NO TAKING IT BACK. NO MORE APRIL 22, 2010.
82 IS NOT THE GOAL. #HISTORYDOESNOTMATTER
Not a surprise that this team has fallen apart since GM Neal Huntington took an ax to it in late July.
Playing with the chemistry of a winning team is a no-no….And that’s exactly what Huntington did.
Of course…When you haven’t really and truly set your sights on winning a division…..Why should you even bother?
