Comments

  1. JMB says:

I thought I read that Clement has really cooled off, so bringing him up now seems questionable.

  2. JAL says:

    JMB

He has cooled but still may better than Navarro

  3. Playoffs by 2012 says:

[Insert cliche about how this is the biggest series of the year here]

Today’s THREE-PLAY FRIDAY OVER / UNDER (always for fun of course)

  5. pattonbb says:

per espn (I know, I know..), Adrian Gonzalez may be on his way to the Dodgers. Wow. That’s huge.

  6. Bizrow says:

    @Playoffs

Hmm, something different for me? Nah

100 nuclear nuggets on the OVAH for all three lines

BTW, finally mailed something to you this am, sorry for the delay

Now I will try something different

    Lets Go Bucs

  7. Bizrow says:

    @patttonbb

Thats surprising, from what I’ve read, Bosox want a ton for him, the Dodgers farm system is pretty weak, or so I’ve read

    Dodgers are all in

Wonder if we could interest them in Qualls?

  8. Chico says:

100 on the over for all three lines, please. Let’s go Bucs!

  9. radio wave says:

    At playoffs:
75 on the over for all 3 lines.
    Thanks

  10. pattonbb says:

    Playoffs,

    I’m all-in.

100 make believe units on the OVER for all three lines. The bleeding stops today.

  11. Boise Bucco says:

DIDN’T THE DODGERS’ OWNERS JUST PAY A $BILLION? MUST BE NICE TO HAVE THAT KIND OF MONEY. GOOD LUCK WITH THE LUXURY TAX NEXT YEAR.

    ANYWAY,

    @PLAYOFFS, IF YOU WILL:

    LINE 1: 100 UNDER
    LINE 2: 100 OVER
    LINE 3: 100 OVER

LET’S GO BUCS, I’M TIRED OF TYPING IN CAPS LOCK ALREADY

  12. TDB1977 says:

    Playoffs

100 on the over for line 1
100 on the over for line 2
100 on the over for line 3

BTW – am I still sitting in last place, and hoovering around -1000?

  13. GlassHalfFull says:

    @Playoffs

Line 1-Not feelin it with Wandy..a hunnerd on the under
Line 2-Cutch breaks loose…another hunnerd, this time over
Line 3-I keep waffling, but my inner positive over rode my inner negative…one more hunnerd on the over

    Last place here I come!

  14. Bizrow says:

I think I have a Derek Bell card we could give to the last place finisher?

  15. Boise Bucco says:

SURE WERE A LOT OF BUTT-HURT YINZERS THIS WEEK…

    http://deadspin.com/5937639/dead-letters-wishing-you-a-lifetime-of-genital-herpes-and-shingles

READ THE LETTERS IN PITTSBURGH-ESE…THEY’RE HILARIOUS.

THE “WHY YOUR TEAM SUCKS” SERIES IS SATIRE AND THERE’S ONE FOR EVERY TEAM. DO PEOPLE THINK THAT HE JUST WROTE ABOUT THE STEELERS AND STOPPED? DON’T KNOW WHY PEOPLE ARE GETTING SO UPSET.

  16. Karen22 says:

100–OVER—all three lines. Gotta be right on the positives eventually, right?!

  17. radio wave says:

    Baseball has gone crazy!
Roger clemens, age 50, is pitching tomorrow. And the astros are talking about signing him for 1 game.
Yesterday, bill spaceman lee, age 65, threw a complete game.

  18. Drew71 says:

Just signed back in. Also just received a call from my NYC son. From the airport. Flying to Vegas.

    Good. For. Him.

    I think he’ll be fine.

    Broke. But fine.

  19. Bizrow says:

With Clemens, there is speculation, and thats all it is, if the Stros sign him and he pitches at the major league level, he doesn’t go up for the Hall of Fame voting for another 5 years.

Plenty of time for voters to get over the PED stuff

  20. Bizrow says:

    Drew, thanks for the update

    A place to relax

Err, I hope he doesn’t have your credit card?

    Oh to be young again…

  21. Milo Hamilton says:

I’d love to take credit for this, but I can’t. Just re-tweeted by 24/7:

“Hisanori Takahashi is apparently Japanese for Chad Qualls.”

  22. JohninOshkosh says:

20 Posts and not one complaining about the lineup? Has Hurdle done the impossible and pleased the asylum?!!

  23. JohninOshkosh says:

Doesn’t anyone go to Atlantic City anymore?

  24. Milo Hamilton says:

    @Biz

That’s been my feeling about this Clemens thing all along. It restarts the Hall of Fame clock. He’d be eligible until 2033.

  25. TDB1977 says:

I heard that Justin Upton has been claimed off waivers by an unspecified team. Let me start the rumors – the Pirates made the claim! :) There, someone said it. Now, lets get this rolling on the internet.

  26. Kevin says:

    Playoffs –

Line 2: 100 on the OVER

Line 3: 50 on the OVER

    Please. Thank you.

  27. Drew71 says:

He has his own credit card.

But the bills come to our address.

    No fooling.

  28. Boise Bucco says:

RE: LINEUP–NOT REALLY MUCH TO DO WITH IT; ROD AND FORT ARE HITTING RIGHT ABOUT THE SAME RIGHT NOW, EVEN THOUGH FORT’S SEASON AVG IS HIGHER. I’D RATHER HAVE PRNW IN THE 2 SPOT, BUT SNIDER’S NOT A BAD CHOICE THERE. TABATA’S BEEN DECENT SINCE HE GOT GROUNDED, SO HOPEFULLY HE STAYS DECENT.

  29. DemonDachshund says:

I seem to remember the Dodgers doing all their moves without moving anything above #7 or so in their farm system. So if they eat the salary, maybe they have enough left to get Adrian too.

Who needs a salary cap/floor though when the Pirates can get Gaby Sanchez with their competitive balance pick?

  30. JohninOshkosh says:

I think it will be a big joke and a major embarrassment to MLB if Clemens is allowed to sign a contract with the Astros. This is not the WWF. Plus, it seems like a kick in the face to the kids on the team. “We traded all our veterans with bloated contracts away. Now we are going to sign a 50 year old to get fannies in the seats.”

  31. Bizrow says:

@John, shoot you could drive from Manhattan to Atlantic City

@Drew, that made me laugh, but as far as I know, you can’t take it with you

By the way, can you lend me $50? 2013 tickets went up (hidden emoticon)

@Demon, I thought they gave up a pretty good pitcher, but yes, with Hanley at least, it was pretty much a salary pick up

Folks we now have a fellow in the clubhouse that can teach the club to “Wax on, wax off”

  32. pattonbb says:

Clemens just wants to come back so he can show what the latest PED has done for him.

  33. Milo Hamilton says:

    @patton

He looks like he wants to show what Burger King has done for him.

  34. Bizrow says:

IMO, John, you are right on, but Clemens probably met WWF guys while picking up his meds, the guy shot his wife up with PEDS so she would look good at a picture shoot or something

He’s a primadonna and flipped the bird at the Federal Government bureacracy (sp).

We all should do the last part….

  35. bman says:

    @PLAYOFFS:

Line 1: 75 on the UNDER
Line 2: 50 on the UNDER

  36. JohninOshkosh says:

Hey all you single gentlemen out there-Casey Anthony is a free woman. Got off paper today. Maybe the Astros can give her a job.

  37. Milo Hamilton says:

The Dodgers have just claimed every remaining player in Major League Baseball on waivers. Now they’ll concentrate on setting their 500 man post season roster. Apparently, Ned Colletti’s toupee has been DFA’d.

  38. JRay3 says:

Well our FO is at it again…recall Jeff Clement about 45 days too late, his August has not been anything to brag about down in Indy. We pick up another 37 year old arm with a 4+ ERA and on top of it can not get left handed hitters out even throwing from the left side.

Does Neal not have any faith in Morris, Wilson, Locke, McPherson, Slaten? Don’t understand the hesitancy with some of our arms that we are supposedly rich in?

And on top of that the Dodgers are closing in on getting Beckett, Punto, Gonzalez and Crawford, YIKES!

  39. Boise Bucco says:

GLAD TO SEE CLEMENT BACK WITH THE BUCS. HERE’S HOPING HE CAN BE ANOTHER GARRETT JONES.

  40. JRay3 says:

@ Playoffs – Good afternoon, well still licking my wounds from the three games I witnessed out in SD. I did not enjoy that at all. But today is a new day and hope is a wonderful thing as I hope today marks the start of a special run to the end. Now for today’s triple play Friday.

Line 1 – Well Wandy has only accomplished that number once in his four starts with the Pirates, his most recent against LA. However, very tough to put faith in him as he faces a team that has quite a few batters with very good results off of him so I can see a lot of nibbling here.

I will take 50 on the UNDER

Line 2- You know while sitting in the stands in SD it was the 9th inning of the middle game and some fan in front of me said “This guy (referring to Cutch) is a mess”. Cutch immediately ripped a line drive base hit on the next pitch and I said yeah he sure is a mess huh, only a MVP candidate. I believe he gets it going.

I will take 100 on the OVER

Line 3 – If the Bucs have any hopes of staying in this race they have to win series, especially at home versus sub .500 competition. I still believe!

I will take 100 on the OVER

    Let’s Go Bucs!

  41. Mlrgenuine says:

    @Playoffs

    Line #1 – 50 on the UNDER
    Line #2 – 100 on the OVER
    Line #3 – 100 on the OVER

    Thanks

    Let’s Go Bucs!

  42. Daquido_Bazzini says:

So now Neal Huntington has dug down deep for Jeff Clement in his attempt (?!) to win a division title.
    Who’s next?…
    Andy LaRoche?

  43. MarkV says:

    @Playoffs

I’ll take 50 on the Under for all three lines. And hope I’m wrong on all of them!

  44. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    @playoffs

    Line 1: 100 under

    Line 2: 100 over

    Line 3: 100 over

  45. Bizrow says:

Just wondering can I claim that toupee?

  46. RobertoForever says:

    @Playoffs,

    Line 1 – 75 under
    Line 2 – 50 under
    Line 3 – 100 over

Jones with 2 HR’s – Whoop those cheatin’ Brewers.

  47. Dcpinpgh says:

100 on all the overs please

  48. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Can Clement really be any worse than Navarro?

  49. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

At least you know he has the power to go yard every once in awhile……Navarro, terrible, terrible hitter

  50. cmat0829 says:

100 on OVER on all 3 lines por favor.

ANYONE > Navarro so kudos for the Clement call-up. He will mostly be a late inning power pinch hitter because I can’t see him getting much time at 1B with Jones doing well and Snider getting at bats vs. RHP in RF.

Doesn’t hurt for the week until September callups when he would’ve been here anyway.

  51. DemonDachshund says:

    @Playoffs -

    Line 1 – 100 on the UNDER
    Lines 2 and 3 – 100 on the OVER

  53. cmat0829 says:

I have to say “I’ll believe it when I see it ” but what are the Red Sox doing??? The trade with the Dodgers doesn’t make a ton of sense except they get to dump Crawford and Beckett (useless in 2012 pennant race) at full contract value…. Punto has some use and AGon is a huge piece to be traded after July 31…..

I don’t know much about the prospects Dodgers are giving up but AGon is a great pickup…. as to the rest, the Dodgers are reaching because (1) with the Giants fading they don’t NEED to do all this to make the playoffs in 2012 and (2) they will be saddled with the mess of their contracts for a while.

  54. Milo Hamilton says:

Apparently the Dodgers are holding out for Carl Yastrzemski & Rick Burleson.

  55. Mike C. says:

    @playoffs
ugh, hate making “bets” with a hangover, but i’ll go 100 on the OVER for all 3 lines. thank you.
    —-
sending down mccutch and bringing up Clement is waay too late, but better late than never.

The FO has to be more proactive in the few weeks left.
“We’ll see how the team does as is” approach is not going to work, and many of us can clearly see that.
Experience might matter, but TALENT matters more. don’t be hesitant to use the kids from AAA.
And usually i don’t like the FO messing with strategies an such of a manager, but this has to be done. the FO HAS to curve Hurdle’s bad habits. Show him solid data how some of his moves or just HURTING the team’s chances to lose. BP misuse is a glaring area for example.
It’s gonna be a wild ride, just hope the team at least performs to it’s full potential. and the FO has to enable them to do that.

  56. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Holy Crap Dodgers!!

I didnt think you could trade a guy on the DL like Crawford is.

This is a win for the Sox if the Dodgers take on those horrible contracts, except for AGon.

  57. Jay Jax Fl via New Castle says:

    Playoffs……

    1.under
    2.under
    3. over

100pts each, please……now go hit the dang ball lumber co.

  58. Bizrow says:

Anyone see where Coletti threw his toupee?

  59. Milo Hamilton says:

    @Biz

I hear that it may go in the trade. Maybe someone on Liverpool could use it ?

  60. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Upton claimed on waivers as well…..hmmm

GM does say that there’s “No chance” that he gets traded.

    Oh well, one can hope.

  61. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Wow, some bit of rumbles today on the waiver wire.

Pirates claim Hisanori Takahashi from the Angels. LHP, doesn’t seem to be very good.

Our old friend Jesse Chavez was aquired by Oakland today as well.

  62. pattonbb says:

I think Beckett would shine back in the NL. Just can’t believe LA would be willing to take on all of those contracts.

  63. Bizrow says:

    @Milo

Actually I don’t need one yet, still hoping I get a few grey hairs before it all disappears

Well, we did get that lefty

    NH is definitely all in

  64. manny _sanguine says:

    @playoffs,
    Line 1 – 50 under
    Line 2 – 50 over
    Line 3 – 50 over

    thanks

  65. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Headed to the house to watch the game.

    Let’s Go Bucs!!!

  66. Milo Hamilton says:

    @Biz

I guess I was hoping for too much thinking it would be a good lefty. They’ll probably dump Qualls for him. That’s something.

  67. pattonbb says:

James Loney just got scratched from tonight’s Dodger lineup.

This looks like it’s going to happen. Wow.

  68. Bizrow says:

    Milo, we will see

Just does not seem like a move from someone that knows what the heck he is doing

    But what do I know

    Beat Em Bucs

  69. Milo Hamilton says:

    @Biz

That’s pretty much been proven to my satisfaction the last month.

  70. Milo Hamilton says:

OK. Chances Wandy puts up a zero in the 1st inning ? Their righthanded batters have murdered him over their careers.

  71. McG says:

    @playoffs

    Over on line 1
    Over on line 2
    Under on line 3
Really hope I’m wrong about the last one

  72. JohninOshkosh says:

Did ROOT show those aerial shots of PNC? Spectacular.

  73. TJA says:

Bucs true “second half” of the season begins tonight.

  74. Milo Hamilton says:

Adrian Gonzalez has been scratched. He & Nick Punto have been summoned to the principles office.

  75. Milo Hamilton says:

Or is it the principal’s office ?

  76. Bizrow says:

Very interesting thanks for the update

    0-0 after one

  77. JohninOshkosh says:

Mike Fiers has been bad lately. Hope they get to him early.

  78. Bizrow says:

If I read correctly AGone critized the manager, sometimes a no-no, Valentine?

  79. Milo66 says:

Another great start. So weak. Make the guy throw pitches. At least Tabby worked the count. Snider first pitch swinging against a guy he has never seen? Amazes me.

  80. Milo Hamilton says:

    @John

    Yeah, so have we.

  81. JohninOshkosh says:

    Terrible throw.

  82. Milo66 says:

    Wow! Wandy SUCKS.

  83. pattonbb says:

    @John #82

Which one? From Barmes or Wandy? I’m willing to bet one slipped out of the hand, and the other didn’t.

  84. Milo66 says:

Is this really happening? Our we really this bad again. Guess the day off didn’t help.

  85. JohninOshkosh says:

Mr. Hasis-I believe that is your cue, sir.

  86. Milo Hamilton says:

I bet Neal wishes Wandy was a rental.

  87. Boise Bucco says:

WELL THIS INNING IS GOING SMASHINGLY

  88. Milo Hamilton says:

Brewers trying to win their 2nd road game since the break.

  89. Milo66 says:

When u are this bad, the umps give you no calls at all. Those both would have been strikes for Reds pitchers. Easy. But when play like a little team that’s what you get.

  90. Milo66 says:

At least show some emotion fellas. They don’t even looked pissed.

  91. TJA says:

Can the Bucs get in on this Boston/L.A. gig somehow? We’ll give them Wandy…

  92. Karen22 says:

I turned it off already…I’m NOT ruining my weekend. Yinz have a nice night!

  93. Boise Bucco says:

NICE MAGIC ACT GETTING OUT OF THAT WITH ONLY 2 RUNS

  94. pattonbb says:

Always liked seeing the 1-2-3 douple play turned.

Actually, when the Bucs aren’t batting, I’ve always liked every double play get turned.

  95. JRay3 says:

Well another slow start, I believe we have only scored first in 49 games this year. Barmes with two errors, Wandy giving up hits, the hitters not getting to a struggling pitcher early. Good grief, this is not looking like a playoff team.

  96. RobertoForever says:

Just a note about the Dodgers waiver claims.

The Pirates might have claimed AGon, they might not have. We will never know. Since the Pirates still have the 6th best record in the NL, the other 10 teams, including the Dodgers get a chance to claim him first.

One of the downsides to have a winning record.

  97. JRay3 says:

We do realize this is the same Michael Fiers who has given up 14 hits, 12 runs and 4 walks in his last 7 innings of work?

  98. Milo Hamilton says:

    Choking dogs until proven otherwise.

  99. Boise Bucco says:

    FIERS HAS A NO-HITTER THRU 2 INNINGS

    TOO SOON? NOPE.

  100. Milo66 says:

BOOOOOOO!! This is ruining my evening. Hope they come back. But I doubt a team, full of players that do not care, can come back. Guys are smiling and joking in the dugout! You are losing the game guys. At least fake like you are upset.

  101. JRay3 says:

@ RobertoForever – Please tell me you can not honestly believe the Pirates put in a claim for Adrian Gonzalez? Are the Red Sox willing to eat 120 million of the 127 million still owed to him?

  102. pattonbb says:

    @Roberto – you’re kidding, right?

That’s like saying they might have signed Pujols bit the Angels beat them to it.

  103. Boise Bucco says:

RYAN BRAUN’S SINGLE-HANDEDLY RUINING MY UNDER WITH HIS FOUL-A-THON

  104. JMB says:

The Dodgers are going to be a juggernaut.

  105. Dave G says:

So much talk of the ‘Z” tonight.

    ‘Z’ this. ‘Z’ that.

    ZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  106. JRay3 says:

If Dodgers pulls this off they will have a lineup that includes Hanley Ramirez, Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier, Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Shane Victorino.

The Cardinals lineup features a team that is the only in the NL to score 600+ runs already.

On the bright side I just watched Rod Barajas lower his average to .195 and Barmes just stare at another strike three call.

  107. Boise Bucco says:

WOW. THIS TRADE IS GOING TO BE HUUUUUUGE. THE CYNICAL PART OF ME HOPES IT RUINS BOTH CLUBS. BASEBALL IS MORE INTERESTING WHEN THE LA’S AND BOSTON’S ARE TERRIBLE.

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/08/red-sox-dodgers-discussing-blockbuster.html

ALSO, FIERS HAS A NO-HITTER THRU 3 INNINGS. IT’S NOT TOO EARLY TO START THE JINXING.

  108. pattonbb says:

I’m watching the Reds on tv while listening to the Bucs.

One of them looks like a playoff team, The other? Not so much. Lets hope that changes soon.

  109. Boise Bucco says:

NICE INNING WANDY!! THAT’S HOW YOU DO IT!

  110. Milo Hamilton says:

Cutch is up this inning. The shortstop better get ready.

  111. JMB says:

    We got a HIT!

  112. Boise Bucco says:

TABATA’S ONLY HAD ONE HITLESS GAME SINCE HIS RECALL, WEDNESDAY AGAINST SAN DIEGO.

  113. JMB says:

    We got another HIT!

  114. JRay3 says:

Nicely done Snider, liner into the gap and now two runners in scoring position for Cutch.

  115. Milo Hamilton says:

Let’s go Cutch. That 6-3 gets us a run.

  116. Boise Bucco says:

    #CROOKEDNUMBER TIME CUTCH DO IT

  117. pattonbb says:

    Cutch delivers!!!

  118. JMB says:

    Cutch is CLUTCH AGAIN!

  119. Milo Hamilton says:

    Even better.

  120. JRay3 says:

@ pattonbb- that was the best post I read all day as my game feed is about 10 seconds behind you! Way to go Cutch!

  121. Boise Bucco says:

    MVP

  122. Dave G says:

    Clutch! 2-2

  123. pattonbb says:

JRay – Sorry man, I’ll keep that in mind. Don’t want to ruin the anticipation for you!

  124. Milo Hamilton says:

Many rightfielders catch that ball. Including Garrett Jones.

  125. JRay3 says:

Will we ever throw out a base runner?

  126. Eric Bowser says:

wow, just got home to see the Dodgers-Red Sox trade rumor. If that goes down, Dodgers are going to be one tough out in the playoffs with Victorino, Ramirez, Gonzalez, Kemp, and Ethier as the top 5 hitters.

With Crawford coming back as well, pretty much puts Victorino as a rental.

Time to root for the demise of the Giants, I can’t see the Dodgers failing to win the NL West. Pirates are going to be up against the Giants and Cardinals for the second wild card, assuming the Braves don’t drop their lead.

….and I’m really tired of seeing Barajas fail to throw out a runner.

  127. Milo Hamilton says:

What you’re seeing with Rod Barajas is a man’s career ending. Seems like a real good guy. Sad.

  128. DemonDachshund says:

Actually, if the Bucs had the opportunity, they should have claimed AGon. Not saying the Bucs should have actually offered for him, but… There’s no way the Red Sox would have just given him away, and it would have prevented him from going to the Dodgers.

It’s at least partially the DBacks fault for letting that trade happen.

  129. Milo Hamilton says:

    @Demon

The Pirates are ahead of the Dodgers in the standings. They couldn’t have blocked it.

  130. JRay3 says:

Big outs from Wandy there to escape the jam….now let’s get him a lead!

  131. DemonDachshund says:

    @Milo -

Yes, which is why I said if the Bucs had the opportunity, and placed blame on the DBacks.

People were saying Roberto was crazy for suggesting that the Bucs would have put a claim in on AGon. And they should have done so. Wouldn’t have affected anything in the end, but still the correct move.

  132. pattonbb says:

I was about to say the exact same thing Milo. This is Rod’s farewell tour. Time to say “good night” and “good bye”. He’ll be on somebody’s coaching staff in a couple years.

Nice work there by Wandy. If he could’ve made a few pitches in that 2nd inning, we’d be bragging on him tonight.

Pedro watches strike three, right down the gut. Guess he was fooled.

  133. Milo Hamilton says:

    @Demon

It would have been the correct move. There is absolutely no way they did, however.

  134. DemonDachshund says:

Why was Clint on the phone already? I thought he has to wait until the damage was done before thinking about making a change…

  135. DemonDachshund says:

    6 good innings from Wandy… Let’s get him a W.

  136. Boise Bucco says:

ACCORDING TO YAHOO SPORTS STATS, WANDY’S THROWN 93 PITCHES, 59 FOR STRIKES.

I ALWAYS WONDERED, DO BALLS PUT IN PLAY COUNT AS STRIKES? I GUESS THEY DO, SINCE THEY WERE SWUNG ON.

DK: As far as tracking the pitcher, they do, yes.

  137. Eric Bowser says:

Embarrassing, this team is pathetic at stealing bases and giving them up…. friggin pathetic.

  138. JRay3 says:

Even on a bad throw from the catcher we are unable to steal a base…unreal.

  139. JRay3 says:

Tabata has 8 steals on the season but has been caught stealing 13 times, maybe he should stay put.

  140. Milo66 says:

105 steals against 11 caught. 56 steals for 43 caught. WOW!!

  141. DemonDachshund says:

Jeez, Dodgers taking on about $58M in payroll next year with the 4 guys they’ll be getting if that trade goes through.

Pretty sure that’s more than the Bucs are paying for everyone this year, when the money from the Yankees for Burnett is counted. Probably not next year, but it’ll be within $10M or so.

  142. The Gunner says:

    @ JRay3 – 141

Cutch & Jones both struck out so Scabata’s steal attempt doesn’t really hurt the Bucs. But I am with you – Scabby should start to stay put from this point forward.

Now Wandy has got to hold ‘em!!

  143. Boise Bucco says:

MAYBE THEY NEED A BASE-STEALING COACH.

  144. DemonDachshund says:

I wonder if Tony Womack would be available to teach base stealing next spring… Or Omar Moreno, if he still has the mobility.

  145. Eric Bowser says:

Find Rickey Henderson or Vince Coleman

  146. The Gunner says:

    @ Demon – 146 & Eric – 147

    What about Frank Tavares??

  147. JMB says:

    Wandy gave us a QS.

  148. Eric Bowser says:

@The Gunner – I’ll take Cecil Fielder as the coach if it means this team has someone better than what they “have” today.

  149. Boise Bucco says:

IF I COUNTED RIGHT I THINK THE OVER WINS BY ONE HALF OF A STRIKE…IT’S QUITE POSSIBLE THAT CH READS THIS BLOG

    OR THAT PLAYOFFS IS CH

  150. DemonDachshund says:

Don’t want the players referring to themselves in the 3rd person, so that rules out Rickey.

Don’t want them playing with fireworks, so that rules out Coleman.

I’m afraid I’m too young to remember Tavares.

  151. Eric Bowser says:

bad baseball just continues…. driving me nuts

  152. JMB says:

    Oh brother….

  153. Milo Hamilton says:

All because we can’t get the pitcher out.

  154. Jandy says:

Dear Lord, tell me he isn’t hurt!

  155. Jandy says:

    OUCH!

  156. JMB says:

It’s too bad the Phillies wouldn’t take Hughes for Victorino.

  157. JRay3 says:

Well we might be behind the Cardinals and Dodgers by nights end and the Dbacks are not far behind us.

  158. Jandy says:

    wow, just wow

  159. Jandy says:

If I’m Wandy I’m effn jacked

  160. Boise Bucco says:

THAT BUNT SINGLE HURT IN SOOOO MANY WAYS…

IT SHOULD ALSO BE MENTIONED, IT WAS HIS FIRST MAJOR LEAGUE HIT.

  161. JRay3 says:

Hit batter, walk and double that just does not get it done.

  162. pattonbb says:

    How about Davey Lopes?

  163. Milo Hamilton says:

    Choking dogs.

  164. Dave G says:

One batter too many again, Mr. Hurdle.

  165. Jandy says:

    $#&*%!

  166. Milo Hamilton says:

I say leave him in there. It’s been so successful thus far.

  167. Eric Bowser says:

Unreal management by Hurdle, terrible execution by Hughes, and just the same old Pirates over the last month. This team needs to get their collective heads out of their back pocket or wild card dream is over.

  168. Boise Bucco says:

WANDY’S OFFICIAL LINE ON YAHOO LISTS HIM AT 100 PITCHES, 65 FOR STRIKES

    PLAYOFFS’ LINE WAS 64.5…

NICE LINE MR. HURDLE, DON’T THINK WE DON’T KNOW WHO YOU ARE

  169. DemonDachshund says:

Good thing they sent the kids from Monday back to AAA instead. They can learn how to pitch in relief there, just like Hughes knows how to do.

  170. JRay3 says:

Welcome to just 9 games above .500, can’t beat the 14 below .500 Padres, can’t beat the 9 below .500 Brewers…I just hope we can get to 82.

  171. Milo66 says:

Why did he take Wandy out? Then he just leaves Hughes in when he can’t get anyone out. Very curious. I have to think a manager knows more than we the fans. But sometimes I wonder WTF is going on here. Makes no sense. This team is folding fast and hard. No juice. No emotion. Just nothing. Wonder if .500 is still possible. They probably could give a crap about that too. Thanks for the effort.

  172. Jay Jax Fl via New Castle says:

Why the hell would Hurdle stick with Hughes…Bases loaded, Ramerez up…..Get Grilli in there….or Hanny…..That is where the game could’ve been saved. Who cares who gets the credit for the save????…..Walker strikes out looking. Great.

  173. JRay3 says:

In successive games we have seen Jason Marquis, a AAA nobody and Michael Fiers who has not gotten anybody out in over two weeks stifle this lineup.

  174. Jay Jax Fl via New Castle says:

Having an 8th inning guy, or a 9th inning guy doesn’t always make sense. It depends on the situation……

  175. JMB says:

I just hope we don’t end up needing to go something like 10-10 to reach 82-80 cuz I’ll have my doubts.

  176. Jay Jax Fl via New Castle says:

    Pedro looks at another 3rd strike…….horrible effort……

  177. Milo Hamilton says:

This is like visiting a sick relative in the hospital. Every day you go hoping they get better. But each day, they stay the same or get a little worse. Day after day after day. Finally you come to the realization they’re not going to get better. I need a drink or twelve.

  178. Boise Bucco says:

WELL AT LEAST WE KNOW THEY WON’T SCORE IN THE 8TH OR 9TH SINCE GRILLI AND HANNY ARE ON INFINITE DAYS REST

  179. Dave says:

Well so much for “this team won’t collapse like last years team”. This team I feel is going to be sinking faster than the mighty Titantic. We’ve got 2 easy outs in the Filler B’s (Barajas and Barmes), an offense that doesn’t work the count, a rotation that has pitched over its head all year, an idiot manager, and a GM who I don’t care what the record says is in way over his head.

  180. Jandy says:

Hot Rod makes our best hitters look bad

  181. TJA says:

Been talking to one of my cousins in L.A. who works for ESPN. Sounds like this Dodger/Red Sox deal is close to done. As my Cuz said: “Dodger Blue is the new Green Monster”

  182. Jandy says:

Milo, whatever you’re having, I’ll have some too

  183. Boise Bucco says:

WAY TO GO HOT ROD, NOW WE JUST NEED 4 MORE JUST LIKE THAT

  184. Milo66 says:

Exactly. Hurdle is proving to be somewhat of an idiot lately. This guy just seems clueless the last few weeks. It is really hard for players to overcome the horrible moves his manager makes.

  185. JohninOshkosh says:

So, Eric Bowser, what are your
    thoughts about the NHL CBA?

  186. Boise Bucco says:

WONDER WHERE CLARENCE AND 22 HAVE BEEN? THIS SEEMS LIKE THEIR KINDA GAME. SURE WOULD BE NICE FOR THEM TO COME AROUND AND CHEER EVERYBODY UP

  187. DemonDachshund says:

It’s cool guys, we’ve got 4 more years of Gaby Sanchez. Success in 201X is guaranteed.

  188. Playoffs by 2012 says:

The OVER wins by 0.5 tonite. Can’t get any closer than that. Thanks to all who played.

Hey, why so glum? Only 10 K’s through 7 against this 88 mph heat. We’re bound to catch him up to him soon…maybe we can ask for another 19 inning game.

“All in?” Winning top priority? Wait for Saturday column on #Pirates tonight at midnight. Promise you’ll be surprised.

    **********************************************************************************************************

I wonder how we’ll be surprised. Is he going to say that they are “all in” now?

DK: No, it’s very different subject matter. Trust me.

  192. JMB says:

    http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/08/24/joe-saunders-has-cleared-waivers/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

Saunders has cleared waivers. I thought the Pirates had some interest in him at the deadline.

  193. Boise Bucco says:

OH HEEEY QUALLS! GLAD TO SEE YOU MADE IT IN THE GAME!

DON’T GO HAVIN’ ANY 1-2-3 INNINGS OR NOTHIN’ WE’RE TRYING TO PUT ON A CLINIC FOR HOW TO GET OUT OF TOUGH SITUATIONS

  194. Jandy says:

    Qualls, seriously?

  195. Milo Hamilton says:

    @JMB

If the Takahashi acquisition doesn’t scream “all in” I don’t know what does.

  196. Boise Bucco says:

    JEFF CLEMENT

    THAT’S ALL IN BABY

    HE’S LIKE ADRIAN GONZALEZ JR.

  197. Jandy says:

Well I’ll be dayumed. Good job Qualls

  198. JohninOshkosh says:

    Jandy

You heard it here first: season will start 10/31. Just a hunch.

  199. Boise Bucco says:

OH QUALLS, YOU MESSED IT UP, NOW THEY HAVE TWO 1-2-3 INNINGS

HOW ARE THEY SUPPOSED TO BUILD THEIR VIDEO OF “SITUATIONAL PITCHING” IF THEY DON’T HAVE A GOOD STOCK OF SITUATIONAL PITCHING TO CHOOSE FROM?

  200. Milo Hamilton says:

    @Jandy

Next Friday night I’ll be in Hollidaysburg. Your neck of the woods ?

  201. Jandy says:

OshKosh, I’ll remember that! And I’d settle for that over no season for sure.

  202. Milo66 says:

Harrison. What the heck? Why are u swinging at the first pitch? WHY!! This is a freaking little league team. You MUST look at the first pitch. You HAVE to. Down 6-3 you need runners. So… Harrison pops up. He should not see another at bat for a while. Complete utter joke.

  203. Jandy says:

Milo, sure is…but I’ll be in Burgettstown at the concert…lol. figures. Godsmack, shinedown…two of my favs :)

  204. Eric Bowser says:

@JohninOshkosh – Thanks for the question, been thinking about it while watching this game. During last lockout, I was 100% behind the owners and their need to lockout the players and blow up the CBA and destroy the players association.

Owners this time around, don’t agree with them at all.

    1) Players want 54% of Hockey Related Revenue (HRR), Owners offer 43% & reduce the pot that goes into HRR plus rollback salaries.

    2) Players want to increase revenue-sharing to an estimated $250 million per year in order to help the low revenue markets compete and have an ability to get to the salary cap floor without going into the red. The owners in New York, Philadelphia, Boston, and Toronto have NO interest in giving up profit to other owners.

    3) Owners want to change the contract rules with elimination of salary arbitration, increase time to unrestricted free agency from 7-years to 10-years, ban contracts longer than 5-years, don’t allow contracts to have bonus money or salaries to be front loaded, and much more. Players don’t want any changes.

There’s more but you get the point, season won’t start on time even though it is really quite simple if I had the magic fairy dust to say, 50-50 revenue split between players and owners. Increase revenue sharing among owners to $250-300 million to help the low revenue teams and seriously discuss contraction or relocation for Phoenix and Florida. My preference would be for contraction as I think the league needs to improve the quality of talent on the 23-man roster and get rid of the goons and no talent hacks on the 4th lines that make the game boring.

Some day during this lockout, I’ll write up my ideas (for the fun of it) and link to it here.

  205. Jandy says:

What will you be in hollidaysburg to see?

  206. Milo66 says:

By the way… Love the effort again tonight boys. Way to show the fans your “all in”. Jokes

  207. Nancy52 says:

    Hanrahan getting some work!

  208. Jandy says:

Eric…thanks for the rundown…it is easy to understand the way you word it :)

  209. Jandy says:

    best play tonight

  210. Jandy says:

    Milo?

  211. Milo Hamilton says:

High School Football. Highlands at Hollidaysburg. I was hoping to hook up with bob hasis at some point this season. TJ’s not on the schedule but Hollidaysburg darn sure is.

  212. Boise Bucco says:

@Eric (I’ll go lowercase here, but only ’cause we’re talking hockey)

Why would you want more revenue sharing? I could understand in some context, as in with baseball, where some of the markets are in historically strong baseball cities that, over the years, could not sustain a large population (i.e., Pittsburgh, Cincinnati.)

In hockey, at least from that markets that I see, most of these smaller markets seem to be concentrated in the Phoenix’s, Columbus’s and Nashville’s of the league, all relatively new(er) clubs that the owners themselves had to vote in. So, while I guess it would be up to the owners themselves to vote to give other, poorer, owners a cut of their earnings, I, as a rich New York owner, would be pretty hesitant to want to do so. I don’t know, that’s just my take on it. It seems like, anybody could have known that hockey wouldn’t have been very popular or profitable in Phoenix, AZ–just go there and walk around. It takes more than just an arena and some jerseys to sell tickets.

At the same time, I’m sure there was a lot of revenue-sharing that went into saving the Penguins that I don’t know about, so maybe I’m just misinformed.

OK, BACK ON STRIKE. LET’S GET IT DONE BUCS.

  213. Jandy says:

well…darn…I’m bummed …but no way I’m missing that concert lol you coming back another time???

  214. Boise Bucco says:

MAYBE IT’S JUST THAT HANNY DOESN’T SHOW UP TO THE STADIUM UNTIL THE 8TH INNING. MAYBE HE’S SECRETLY A CRIMEFIGHTER.

IF THAT’S HIS EXCUSE, I’M OK WITH IT.

  215. Milo Hamilton says:

Not this season. Oh well, maybe sometime you are visiting your daughter we’ll go to Mugshots.

  216. Jandy says:

Mugshots is where??? and what is their specialty?

  217. Milo Hamilton says:

Crafton. I think their specialty is, well, beer. :)

  218. Jandy says:

Lord, she lives in Crafton lol I’ll have to ask her about it lol

  219. Jandy says:

    and I like Beer :)

  220. Jandy says:

    holy crap 2 walks

  221. bman says:

Time to go “all in” with a 3-run HR

  222. Nate83 says:

The dodger/ red sox trade is everything that is wrong with baseball. The dodgers are taking on more salary then the entire pirate team makes. But why shouldn’t they. Their owners just paid 3 BILLION to buy the team. 3 billion!!! 3 billion for a toy to play with that has no rules to prevent them from just outspending 22 of the other 30 teams. They don’t even care that Crawford may not be able to play for a year.
Could you imagine the pirates just throwing 20 million away

And the red sox will just take the 60 million they saved and get 3 of the top 4 free agents available next year. It must be nice just to hit the reset button instead of actually having to have a plan.

Only 5 teams in all of baseball (red sox, dodgers, Yankees, angels, rangers and cubs) could have even considered a trade like this and that is a problem. I can’t beleive the other 24 owners continue to let this happen. Maybe I’m missing something.

  223. RobertoForever says:

So if i follow today’s blog group think from today, then Millwaukee’s manager should take this closer out now after allowing the first two lawyers to reach.

He didn’t! How could he be so stupid.

Did not throw Clement 1 pitch in the strike zone.

  240. Jandy says:

    Poor Clement

  241. JohninOshkosh says:

Thanks, Eric B. I appreciated that. Some folks here know their pucks.

  242. Boise Bucco says:

YEAH, COME ON FORT, YOU WERE ALWAYS THE REAL HERO OF THIS STORY ANYWAY

  243. Jandy says:

Fort is making them work for it

  244. Jandy says:

OshKosh, Eric posts on my son in law’s blog too, those guys know their stuff

  245. The Gunner says:

Lucroy’s voice will be higher for a while

  246. Eric Bowser says:

Not sure what I want more when watching this Pedro… a puck or baseball to the head

  247. The Gunner says:

    Great job Fort!!

  248. Eric Bowser says:

Did I just see a baseball hit by McKenry?

  249. Jandy says:

    LOL gunner!

    and Fort smacks one

  250. Dave G says:

Amazing at bat for the Fort. 6-5 Brewers…

  251. Milo66 says:

    Up to Gabby

  252. pattonbb says:

Fort says he’s not ready to hit the showers yet.

  253. Jandy says:

    Sanchez YIKES!

  254. RobertoForever says:

Well that’s an ooportune time for the Fort to break his 0 for 21 streak.

    C’mon Gaby. Be the hero!

  255. The Gunner says:

    It’s all up to Gaberoo!!

  256. Jandy says:

    Eric..did you duck? :p

  257. Boise Bucco says:

    WOWWW

    C’MONNNN GABY!!! BRING PRNW HOME!!!

  258. JohninOshkosh says:

    Axford has sucked all year..

  259. The Gunner says:

thanks Jandy – we need a base hit………………..NOW!!!!

  260. Jandy says:

    hell yeah!

  261. RobertoForever says:

    @Jandy,

You do realize that Sanchez is hitting better than most on the team in August, right? Better than the Fort, Cutch and PRNW

  262. Jandy says:

Yup Roberto…I’m just saying Yikes, for him being in that position….pressure!

  263. Boise Bucco says:

ALWAYS FEELS GOOD TO CHASE A CLOSER

WHEN’S THE LAST TIME THE BUCS DID THAT?

  264. Jandy says:

    dayum

  265. Dave G says:

    * sigh *

  266. Eric Bowser says:

@Jandy – What blog is that? I used to post often at letsgopens.com but haven’t posted there in over 8 months since Twitter is more to my liking than dealing with the trolls there. I do miss writing about hockey but work and family have taken away time to really dedicate any quality work into discussing with people in the industry.

Last lockout, I had great email conversations with #2 NHL man Bill Daly and a few others in league and agents but this time, I haven’t bothered to even ask Bill about why the owners are going to the scorched earth approach after all the concessions the players were forced and agreed upon last time around.

Just can’t wait for hockey, can’t wait to see a healthy and focused 87.

….ole by Sanchez to end game, 6-5….thanks Hurdle, thanks Hughes.

  267. Jandy says:

    Roberto…THAT’S what I’m talkin about :(

  268. The Gunner says:

God almighty!! He looked awful on that swing.

  269. Milo66 says:

Thanks Gabby. Great at bat clown.

  270. Boise Bucco says:

BLAH…THE STRIKE LIVES ON…GOOD NIGHT EVERYBODY

  271. Jandy says:

Eric..>FaceOff Factor. You haven’t posted there in a while either…but it’s been a bit slow lately.

  272. RobertoForever says:

Bummer. Dug too big of a hole, tonight.

Didn’t give up, but need that 6th/7th inning reliever situation sorted out.

  273. pattonbb says:

Hey, at least they didn’t lay down. They went down swinng. That in itself is an improvement even if the outcome sucked.

  274. Jandy says:

This loss is on Hughes and Curdle Hurdle.

  275. Milo66 says:

Back to being a bad joke again. I feel bad for all of us fans. We put out heart and souls into them and they scoff at us once again. Thanks

  276. The Gunner says:

    @ Milo66

Great choice of words. At least we have control of him for a few more years!

  277. Dave G says:

Gotta hope that someday Hurdle learns to pull a pitcher when he’s struggling, and not after he’s given up 4 runs.

  278. Dave G says:

    Excuse me… BEFORE he’s given up 4 runs…

  279. Jandy says:

    ::sigh:: Milo…where’s that beer???

  280. RobertoForever says:

    Jandy,

You’re right. that was a Fort-type at bat there by Baby.

  281. Eric Bowser says:

@Jandy – Ah yes, I do enjoy the work at FOF. Jesse puts in the work as do others.

At some point, Pirates need to start putting together a nice 4-5 game winning streak because teams like the Cardinals and Dodgers are going to make a run and that is what separates the good teams from the average teams.

82 wins is important but I still want that playoff game.

  282. RobertoForever says:

    *Gaby

    Damn auto-correct

  283. Jandy says:

Eric…I enjoy your work at FF.

    Roberto lol

  284. JMB says:

    15-22.

They gave us an exciting, while unfulfilling, finish.

  285. bobhasis says:

Milo, when you say TJ is not on your schedule, are you implying you officiate games – or did you mean your social schedule?

Would certainly enjoy hooking up – somehow somewhere.

Hollidaysburg visits TJ in week 3 on Sept.14, our only non-conference game

  286. Playoffs by 2012 says:

At least The Window was on his game tonight…..just sayin

  287. Jandy says:

The Window is ALWAYS on his game :)

  288. Milo Hamilton says:

    @bob

No officiating here. I do play by play on local (very local) cable. Keeps me out of trouble. Like you, I just love the game & it keeps me involved. I’ve been at it for quite a while. This will be 20 years for me. Dejan & I were going back and forth earlier this year about a game we both covered back in the 90′s at Riverview. Great memories.

DK: Actually cited that game again in a column from London. Hope you didn’t miss that.

  289. Chuck H says:

O.K., It’s official now- the Pirates are in their late season swoon towards last place.
13 more strikeouts. That’s not acceptable for any league, let alone, the majors. I don’t
tell anyone anymore that I’m from Pittsburgh, except to brag about the Steelers. It
looks like Andrew is trying to lose the batting title. The only way he can win it is to sit out the rest of the season. Maybe the whole team should sit out the rest f the season, for
all the effort they’re putting into winning games. Just pitiful, pitiful, and pitiful!!!

  290. Milo Hamilton says:

    DK

I did see that. Good timing, I needed a smile that day.

    Just read the column.

    Oh. My. God.

This from the same front office that made the 20 games in 20 days out to be the Bataan Death March. They should have been tired after being told about it so often. Maybe they should have had them stop to pick up garbage along the turnpike on the way home. No wonder so many of us are constantly skeptical.

DK: Good. Thought of you when I typed that over there.

Hey, please repub this on the new thread, Milo. I was slow on the trigger with that thing by about 20 minutes. Thanks.

  291. Milo66 says:

Wow DK. That was an interesting column. I sure see the same thing. An organization that has no idea how to handle itself in a playoff race. They are clueless at times. I cannot believe they actually had the players do this. Unacceptable on all levels. I’m sure the ball club will come out with some sort of spin to counter your column. I think all of us have a right to be upset on how this team has been run in just the last month. From the inexplicable decision Hurdle made by bringing in McCuthchen last week, to removing Wandy in the 7th to bring in Hughes. I’m a realist and I understand we were playing above our head for a couple months, but we actually have a shot this year. Albeit small, but we do have a shot. I’m 42 years old and I am old enough to have seen us win. I want that again so bad. I’m just afraid the powers to be don’t want it as bad as I do, and that is just wrong.

DK: Sorry for being slow with the new thread, Milo. Would love it if you and JRay reprinted your replies over there.

  292. JRay3 says:

Well that was a depressing read…while some management teams are working at pulling off blockbuster deals to improve their team in a pennant race, ours is sending 40% of it’s club to shoot pigeons immediately after a cross country flight and 20 consecutive games…..AWESOME.

In any business it starts from the top down, and unfortunately the Pirates leadership fails miserably in setting the tone. But I am sure Mr. Nutting will deliver another inspirational speech about BIG expectations and competing for a division title and championship in Bradenton come March……all talk no walk.

  293. Boise Bucco says:

I can only speculate, and certainly DK wouldn’t name them in the piece for fear of calling out the source, but it’s possible that the “sources” that were forced to participate in the Seven Springs Charity Tournament were some of the guys that were traded for at the deadline, and thus, unable to participate in the June event.

Again, this is total speculation. And at the same time, if the 20 games in 20 days had gone differently, perhaps 12-8 or better, I’m guessing that the attitude of those off-record would be a whole lot different. I think that a lot of that attitude stems from a general frustration in losing. That, I’m actually happy to see.

Also, my strike lasted a whole two days. Couldn’t stand all caps-lock all the time. Honestly, maybe I’m reading too much into that article, but the frustration of whoever that player was, it spoke to me–I like knowing that they’re frustrated. I don’t like the fact that they’re frustrated–but I know when work sucks, and I know what it feels like and I can at least relate to that. Can’t exactly protest against something when I know they’re busting their butts, even when their management is doing their best to bumblefart their way to another losing season. I watched McKenry’s at-bat a few times, then I watched again, and I watched him battle. Even Pedro’s strikeout–you can tell he gives a crap, and it’s great to watch. Maybe I’m in the minority here, but I’d rather watch a team try hard and lose than a team jog out grounders and win (I promise I’ll change my tune if it ever happens.) I still believe in this team, and I will be rooting for them the whole way, winning season, losing season, playoffs, 20-0, whatever.

DK: Don’t waste time looking for a pattern. It was universal. Everyone I talked to. No exceptions. Even those that didn’t go.

  294. Boise Bucco says:

Sorry, after I re-read my post, my quote marks around the word source didn’t look right. Didn’t mean anything by it.
