Steelers spare Batch, cut Kapinos, Essex

By Dejan Kovacevic | Trib Total Media

The Steelers just made final cuts to get to 53 …

>> LB Sean Spence was placed on their Reserve/Injured List.

>> Twenty-one others were released: P Jeremy Kapinos, OT Trai Essex, QB Jerrod Johnson, DB Damon Cromartie-Smith, DB Terrence Frederick, DB Josh Victorian, LB Brandon Hicks, LB Marshall McFadden, DL Corbin Bryant, DL Igbinosun Ikponmwosa, DL Jake Stoller, RB DuJuan Harris, WR Tyler Beiler, WR Toney Clemons, WR David Gilreath, WR Marquis Maze, WR Derrick Williams, OL Ryan Lee, OL John Malecki, OL Chris Scott.

>> Charlie Batch made it. Again. Johnson will end up on the practice squad.

>> Only four wide receivers on the team. Mild surprise.

Really, though, not much in the way of surprises here, unless you’re an Essex fan. I’ve never been.

Johnson looks good, no doubt. Not great, but promising. Threw some sharp balls late last night, for those who didn’t stick it out. Good athleticism. But keeping him as No. 3, if not necessary, would have been kind of pointless.

  1. Drew71 says:

Johnson makes perfect sense as the #3 on a team like Seattle or Miami where you’re not sure what you have at #1. For a team that is sound at QB and with very reasonable playoff aspirations, I think it would have been a surprise to find him on the roster today.

I’m not sure they are truly done with some minor stuff around the edges, but whether so or not, there’s nothing here that I find surprising or troubling.
