Pittsburgh sports talk with the Trib columnist

Wakeup Call: So, there’s this radio show, see …

By Dejan Kovacevic | Trib Total Media

Brief and to the Point …

The new radio show starts up today, with special guest Jamie Dixon as the first interview and the Trib’s own Xs and Os ace Mark Kaboly on board to talk Steelers.

For those who haven’t read my first 493 mentions, here are essentials:

Station: TribLIVE Radio, online only

Time: 1-2 p.m., each Tuesday

Where to find it: Click right here off your PC or laptop. It’s free, easy, no signup or registration. Just point, click and listen.

Mobile: The TribLIVE Radio app is for the iPhone, iPad and Android. Just search “TribLIVE Radio” in the app store. It’s also free, easy and all that.

I want you to be involved, too. The final segment of the show will be set aside for listener feedback, and that can be in the form of calls, emails, tweets or questions right here in the blog comments below. Best chance to get yours on air is our email: The call-in number is 412-320-7925.

This could be fun.

>> Here’s one of the online banner ads, yours to clip and save!

>> Speaking of fun, if you’re not getting the Trib in print, you’re missing out on Kaboly’s new weekly Xs and Os page where he goes over film of the Steelers’ previous game as only someone that obsessive can.

Here’s the online version of his content.

>> Kevin Correia pitched seven wonderful innings early this morning for the Pirates, who … what, you didn’t stay up until 3 a.m.?

And I did, the night before the big show?

Well, so did Rob Biertempfel. Here’s his coverage.

>> In closing this morning, I want to thank the good people at Sports Yapper for picking up the sponsorship of the radio show. If you haven’t seen me on it, Yapper is a mobile app for talking sports. Very similar to Twitter but without the other stuff. You’re in a room, basically, with fans of the team you’re watching.

This is the Yapp app.

It’ll be available on PC soon, as well.

I am listening to the trib radio site now but can’t find your show from earlier today. Is is a live only show or will their be an archive or podcast version ? I work and can’t be on a computer or iPhone in the afternoon so I hope that there is a podcast version.

Looking forward to you show and some good insight into all the X and O’s without all the silly contrived topics that pollute the airways now.

DK: Once a week. Only Tuesdays.

And darn, now I have to go kill all my contrived topics!

  2. Break a leg, Dejan, today at 1:00 PM, 12:00 Central!

    DK: Merci, Groat.

  3. Dan1283 says:

I’ll be a podcaster, but a regular podcaster. Been looking forward to this since long before the idea was probably even being kicked around. Should be fun!

DK: Thanks, Dan. Actually, every download counts toward the monster ratings I’m sure to put up. Very much appreciated.

  4. Reading says:

Good luck DK!! The W was worth staying up for!

    DK: Thanks, Reading.

  5. Drew71 says:

    Go get em, Big Time.

And wear that new jacket, too. We want you to look your best on your new show.

Can’t wait for when ThunderJackBennyCrack calls.

  6. Drew71 says:

I may DESPISE the song, but i LOVE that picture of

September 17th, 2012 – 8:47 pm C’mon Bucs. I’ve decided that, structurally, you stink. Still, you could win one. I’m at a loss to think of an under-appreciated Pirate.”

    How about Kevin Correia?

Didn’t watch last night…4am comes too quickly. But reading the comments, I gotta say, TC and Drew were on a roll. Cracked me up!

Dejan, good luck with the radio show!

When you finally get up from staying up for the W last night – Really enjoyed your posts from last night. Refreshing to read posts focused on the game being played. Look forward to some posts from you tonight.

Drejan, I’m fine as frog hairs, how YOU doin’, friend??

  22. Milo Hamilton says:

    Thanks for the Sinatra.

  23. NMR says:

From 24/7 yesterday regarding the Pirates moving their Minor League team:

“The real problem, though, was a lack of communication between the parent organization and its minor league club. State College executives tell tales of phone calls, texts and emails that were never returned. Sources say the Pirates accepted very little feedback from the Spikes on things such as how to market the club.

Despite the friction, the Pirates two weeks ago offered State College a four-year extension. Spikes ownership countered with a two-year offer. Spikes owner Chuck Greenberg is a Pittsburgh native who named a son after Roberto Clemente. Greenberg dearly wanted to remain with his hometown team. Last Monday, Greenberg and Pirates president Frank Coonelly appeared to reach an agreement. Coonelly said he’d get back to Greenberg with final details, but Greenberg never received a return call. No one from the Pirates — not owner Bob Nutting, nor Coonelly, nor GM Neal Huntington — touched base over the past week with State College.”

NOTHING the Pirates Front Office has done this season has made me more mad than this.

What a bunch of arrogance, unprofessional jack*sses. They deserve each other.

  24. Jandy says:

Wow, NMR, that’s horrible. If I operated that way in our office, I’d be canned.

  25. redus says:

Pullman Park in Butler…Great place for the single A team go.

  26. Jandy says:

I came across this article about a homographic slur being investigated by MLB.
So, what makes this more deserving of notice/investigation than the Phillips crap? Just wondering.

  27. radio wave says:

Sounds like the gassed pen came through this morning.

  28. Jandy says:

radio, yeah, the guys held on, but give KC credit for pitching a good 7 innings :)

  29. LuckyNKentucky says:

Leave it to the Bucs to get a big shutout win with 5 people in the U.S. still up to see it. Not complaining, I’ll take it. 8 to 82.

Any mention of re-signing 11-win Kevin Correia next season? (kidding)

  30. Jandy says:

Lucky, why kid? The guy is the only pitcher other than Wandy who is winning.

  31. Leefoo says:

Big 3 game series starting tonight! Will any of the Bucs be awake for it, tho? They got in at 6:00! Great scheduling decision, Cubbies!

    Marco vs AJ
    Yovani vs Kyle
And I fooget who goes in game 3.

    I want/need/pray/hope/prettypleaseGod for at least 2 of 3.

    Brewed Foo

  32. LuckyNKentucky says:

True, J-girl, but I don’t think he wants to come back. He wants to go home to the left coast where he might be wanted during a mid-season slump and pouting session. Who can blame him?

Whoda thunk it after that display on Sunday before a national TV audience? Two hits for the powerful, always-dangerous Cubs?

  33. Milo Hamilton says:

Chuck Greenberg scares these guys. It’s no secret he’d buy the team if given the chance. Being so close with Mario, he could probably scare up the money in a day or two. He’s always been the guy I throw out there when somebody mentions Mark Cuban.

On the other hand, ask Nolan Ryan who he believes in this State College scenario. I’m sure it’s not Mr. Greenberg.

  34. RobertoForever says:

24/7 printed this in his article posted this morning online

“Despite the friction, the Pirates two weeks ago offered State College a four-year extension. When the Spikes countered with a two-year offer, the Pirates abruptly broke off the talks.

“After a long and very candid conversation last Monday, we decided our values and objectives to develop players would be best served by another (affiliate),” a Pirates source said.

A little different perspective than, “we agreed then they never called back”, no? Did you find that quote in his sulia or in a trib article? Seems to be a disconnect between the two reports.

  35. Bizrow says:

    The BMTIB has values?

I know their objective is $$

  36. Thundercrack says:

I don’t like what happened with the State College situation either.

My guess is that the Bucs were not too happy when the Spikes’ management aired their displeasure earlier this summer.

And I wouldn’t doubt that Nutting would really prefer to have another minor league team in West Virginia.

  37. Leefoo says:

RF….Rob B has it this way:

Probable pitchers: Brewers RHP Marco Estrada (3-6, 3.77 ERA) vs. Pirates RHP A.J. Burnett (15-7, 3.66)

7:05 p.m. Wednesday: Brewers RHP Yovani Gallardo (15-8, 3.72) vs. Pirates RHP Kyle McPherson (0-0, 1.54)

4:05 p.m. Thursday: Brewers RHP Mike Fiers (9-7, 3.23) vs. Pirates LHP Wandy Rodriguez (11-13, 3.65)

so which is it I wonder?

  38. Vette60 says:

    Hey DK.

Good luck with the show – won’t be able to listen live, but will download the podcast – will be listening on Thursday while on the plane to Vail for a family wedding.

Oh yeah, after witnessing Gardner-Webb get trounced by the Richmond Spiders, think Pitt will be able to get W number 2 without too much trouble.

    Take care,
    Randy in Richmond, VA.

  39. PgherinLev says:

Here in Germany, the rain delay meant that I could watch most of the game before going to work!

  40. RobertoForever says:

Good question. We will know for sure about 3pm.

Personally, I would rather see the Yovani vs AJ matchup. Ace for Ace

  41. NMR says:

That quote is straight from 24/7’s blog.

I’m a fan of Greenberg, as well, and share your thoughts on possible team ownership. The guy is itching for the chance. Friend of my is aqcuaintances with Chuck and can vividly remember how excited he was for the opportunity the get his foot in the door when the park was built in State College.

I always chalked the Ryan/Greenberg feud up to the big Texas personality versus the outsider Yankee. It truly is another reality down there.

  42. 21sthebest says:

“I know their objective is $$”

Well Biz if that’s their objective, they’ve done a pretty lousy job of generating $$.

  43. Jandy says:

Hate to rain on your enthusiam, guys, but there may not be a game this afternoon. Pittsburgh is slated for a couple inches of rain today. One of my site foremen said it’s raining so hard there, he can’t see.

  44. Thundercrack says:

I was rooting for Greenburg in Texas. And when he was kicked out my initial thoughts were the same as NMR.

But I read a lot of articles about the situation – many of them from Dallas/Texas papers and sources. It changed my opinion, slightly, about Greenburg. He did not look good.

  45. pattonbb says:

Greenberg thought he should be making baseball related decisions, or at least have a voice in them. Nolan Ryan wasn’t going to put up with that. I think I read somewhere that Greenberg was never popular with the mlb honchos either.

Always thought he’d be a logical choice for a new owner. But he really seems to want to not just own a team, but try to run one as well. That doesn’t work out too often.

  46. Brad, Indiana PA says:

    @NMR (23)

If that’s the jist of the story, what a bunch of CRAP from BMTIB! That’s my biggest problem with them is their attitude and the numerous business, personnel and PR blunders they’ve committed over the last several years. They ARE arrogant and really don’t have a clue.

It’s one thing to be confident when you’re wildly successful, but their behavior is just ridiculous, and that move was plain rude. Reminds me of the one ROOT commercial that states “Be Patient” right at the beginning. Seriously?!

  47. Thundercrack says:

One of the things that really angered Nolan Ryan, and may have been the final stray for Greenberg, was the dealings with Cliff Lee.

Ryan and his GM decided that the price and terms were too high. Greenberg then went on his own to visit Lee and try to sign him.

One thing that I posted on Smizik’s blog at the time was that from what I read it seemed like Greenberg had turned into FC.

  48. Jandy says:

  49. Brad, Indiana PA says:

Serious question, has Mario said anything about the lockout? Second, (probably just a stupid pondering) but what would happen if he were still a player/owner today? Would he still have a good parking spot? Would he have had to approve locking himself out?

  50. PetroSteel says:

DK, Best of luck with the new show!

Hard to believe we are still in this thing. That was a big win this morning and this is a BIG game tonight! I like our chances with AJ on the mound!

  51. PetroSteel says:

I wonder how often the Pirates have won two games in the same day against two different teams???

  52. NMR says:

Interesting, TC and patton. I would have to agree that baseball decisions are dangerous territory for an owner, but lord, how refreshing would it be to have a guy at the top who is actually an active contributor to the organization?

@Brad – I’ve become mostly numb to the antics you speak of, but this one put me over the top. Thats just no way to act as a businessman or human.

@Jandy – I’m still drying out from my walk in this morning. Worst rain Pittsburgh has had since Spring.

  53. jackdeloplane says:

Arrogance looks bad on a mgt team of a team that hasn’t broken .500 since the Garfield administration.

I’m with NMR, if only because I one day hope to know what NMR stands for. Hopefully its not just initials, its something sinister.

Not Mine Really…..No Radioactivity ‘Round here….still working on it…

  54. jackdeloplane says:

  55. Hurdled says:

The first radio program I ever hosted was back in college.

The Program Manager told me right before I went on the air that “DEAD AIR” was the worst possible thing that could happen in the radio business.

I proceeded to freeze for a good 10 second after the red ON AIR light came on.

Keep talking, and spin some records if need be.

    Good Luck Blessed Leader!!

  56. jackdeloplane says:

  59. Brad, Indiana PA says:

  61. Karen22 says:

Best of luck on your new media venture debut this afternoon, Dejan. Now I am certain that you have clones! :>)

  62. Hurdled says:

Hope my reference to HayesCare wasn’t seen as politics.

I remember reading that Chester A. Arthur was a fan of the Alleghenys.

  63. Hurdled says:

  64. NMR says:

@jack – Haha, I could be honest or I could be interesting…you pick.

lawnbeaver still takes the cake, IMO. It makes my brain hurt trying to figure out what that even means.

  85. NMR says:

This place is going to implode when the season ends. (insert joke about that date occuring two weeks ago)

@Brad I guess Correia is a starter until Karstens is ready to be a pitcher who can go outside the range of 2-5 innings. #Hurdle’d

  86. jackdeloplane says:

When the season ends, then we can talk about Jandy’s favorite….hockey!

  87. Jandy says:

right now Correia looks like one of the two best starters we have. Here’s hoping AJ has a good outing.

  88. Jandy says:

Hey jack, now you’re talking…too bad there’s a lockout, bu I’m sure we could dig up something!

  89. Boise Bucco says:

Good luck with the show DK! I’ll be back in the states in a month or 2, can’t wait to listen live–in the meantime I’ll d/l the podcasts.

They were showing the Bucs/Cubs replay on AFN yesterday while I was running–they looked good, but that strike zone’s getting awfully big. Maybe it was just one game, I haven’t been able to watch them in a while, but they looked like they were swinging at a lot out of the zone.

In the meantime, I’m pumped for this Brewers series. Did Fort really call a sweep? Good for him, hope they score a bajillion runs and gutpunch the Brewers right out of the WC race.

  90. Boise Bucco says:

…and we need to get this NHL lockout thing done and overwith; I’ll be in Pittsburgh for Thanksgiving (and first day of buck!) and I’m expecting to take my boy to a Pens game. Here’s hoping that they get it figured out by then.

  91. NMR says:

A little reading material to supplement JAL’s links:

Great article discussing an in-season mechanical change to Padres outfielder Cameron Maybin’s swing. Video and advanced stats to back it up.

Very, very interesting for you seam heads out there.

  92. Dejan,

21 minutes (a Roberto Clemente reference) to showtime, Dejan!

Comb your hair before you go on the radio!

  93. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Good luck DK.

Should be on at 1000 my time….dang, that’s 20 minutes!!

I’ll have to try and download it or something fancy computer-esk

Sounds like it could be a fun time, good gig.

  94. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I’ve always like Maybin. Hope he’s getting this done. Speed galore

  95. nate83 says:

Didn’t like Garfield. That cat ate too much lasagna.

  96. Jandy says:

    lol nate!

  97. jackdeloplane says:

don’t take any shots at Garfield….get it….shots? Anyone?

  98. Jandy says:

yinz guys need some more coffee ;)

  99. Jandy says:

at least Garfield kills spiders. yuck

I hope DK rememebered to get a Starbuck’s to have along just in case he gets froggy.

  100. Brad, Indiana PA says:

Yeah, but he had one heck of a sidekick.

  101. Naje says:

DK…. have them turn up the volume… the volume is full up now listening to you on Steigy’s show… as well as the computer volume… it’s quite low… gotta crank “California”…. BRING IT!

    thanks and good luck!

  102. NMR says:

  103. nate83 says:

Just to clarify. I was talking about the president not the cartoon character. That guy loved lasagna, unfortunately it always got stuck in his mustache.

  104. Milo Hamilton says:

He’ll going to be surprised how fast the hour goes.

DK: YES! That actually was the biggest issue, especially with the first segment. I had more to cover there.

  105. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

So are you reading the blog while doing the show?

    DK: Didn’t have laptop.

  106. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

The blog really needs to add like and dislike buttons to comments.

    you think he’s sweating yet?

  107. Brad, Indiana PA says:

    @Jack, 98

    Good one.

  108. Hurdled says:

People tend to forget about President Garfield.

He cut millions from the national debt.

He began the reformation of the Civil Service System and Post Office.

He began the process of universal education in this country.

He signed the first formal treaty with Madagascar.

Unfortunately he was also a Browns fan.

    No one is perfect.

  109. Milo Hamilton says:

I hope Coonelly’s not listening to this during lunch. Roberto’s going to have to give him the Heimlich.

  110. Jandy says:

Oh man, you guys are outdoing yourselves today.

  111. Hurdled says:

    too soon.

  112. Brad, Indiana PA says:

Anyone ever notice that no matter what their faults, every Pittsburgh coach/manager has a ridiculously appropriate, yet studly hairdo? I’m 30 and I don’t have enough hair to compete even with Dan Bylsma let alone Dixon or Hurdle. And Tomlin? That guy’s beard is inhuman!

  113. pattonbb says:

Promising first segment from DK. Good stuff.

  114. Milo Hamilton says:

    Mr. Garfield’s been shot down,

    shot down low.

If DK makes a Garfield reference during today’s show, you should consider yourself a success. Never knew that much about Garfield…never needed or wanted to! Ha!

    I kid because I care.

Steve Sabol of NFL Films has died.

  119. Jandy says:

    RIP Steve.

  120. Naje says:

    oh man… sad news..

  121. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

What? Steve Sabol and his old man helped make the NFL popular. Without NFL films, who knows where it would be.

    True loss

  122. Jandy says:

DK, so, now that the first one is done, are you satisfied overall with how it went? Would you do anything differently? Might you change something next week?

DK: Yeah, I will. Live and learn. Anyone who knows me knows I hate pretty much everything I do, at least right after it’s done.

I had some timing issues in the first segment, and I inadvertantly spoke over Jamie a couple times in the interview because we didn’t have a great connection.

    Otherwise … live and learn.

  123. Hurdled says:

I always thought that Steve Sabol had the BEST job in the world.

  124. Jandy says:

Hurdled, you are one silly guy. Dejan has the best job in the world. :)

    DK: No argument.

  125. radio wave says:

I heard the show today, very good.

Folks have said they are getting a later podcast, where and how is it available?

DK: Thanks, Radio. It’s up now.

I believe this is the link for DK’s podcast –

That win looked like something strait out of April. Strikeouts in the teens. One inning of offense that produced enough runs such that the lights out pitching performance could hold up.

Winning that way is still winning. Get a good start from AJ tonight and maybe, just maybe things start to come around a little bit.

The path to even get to over .500 is brutal. The way I see it 2 out of 3 from the beer men and a sweep of the Astros is an absolute must. That leaves one game a piece from the Mets, Reds, and Braves. You may be able to take one from the Brew Crew and 2 from the Mets as an alternative. But sweeping the Astros in Houston is key, and not that easy to accomplish.

Of course maybe tonight they all come ou of the second half funk and start winning every series. Winning every series with 0 sweeps is a record of 11-5 for a final recors of 85-77. One can always hope right?
