Pittsburgh sports talk with the Trib columnist

  1. RobertoForever says:

God Bless those Steeler fans. Hope they all get out without injury.

    Joking, but somewhat serious.

  2. RobertoForever says:

So, can I just say that I hate this new approach by CBS of covering the end of other close/OT games rather than just getting to the 4:25 game? This is the second week in a row that I am missing the beginnig of the Steelers game. Forced to watch two 0-2 teams in OT with KC and NO.

CBS needs to then show the Steelers game on one of their viacom channels until the OT nonsense is done.

  3. Jay Jax Fl via New Castle says:

    Ben to Mliier again…..nice…..

  4. Frankie says:

Ryan Mundy needs to go …..

  5. Frankie says:

Repeat another touchdown via Ryan Mundy. He must go.

  6. RobertoForever says:

Nice answers by the Steelers after the fumble turned into a TD for the Raiders

Steelers “squizam” a FG in as time expires in the first half, and then march down for a 3rd Roethlisberger passing TD. Steelers tack on a quick 10 points.

Gilbert is really struggling, but his rookie backup is NOT ready.

  7. florida steeler says:

Ryan Mundy is HORRIBLE!! How the hell is he on an NFL team. And, who is our special teams coach?? Penalties, penalties and no coverage.

  8. RobertoForever says:

That TD by Oakland to make it 21 pts for the Raiders was not all Mundy’s fault. Someone else either missed a coverage assignment (there were 2 receivers and only Mundy on Ryan’s side of the field) or the Raiders made a great play call and caught the Steelers in a defense that couldn’t cover both guys on that side of the field.

  9. cosmo says:

Getting a bad feeling about this game. Letting Raiders hang around way too long.

  10. Reading says:

Now would be a good time for the D to step up.

  11. RobertoForever says:

And an interesting gamble by the Raiders to try an onside kick after scoring to close the gap to 21-24.

Great execution right up until the point where the ball went through the hands of the diving Raider and went out of bounds for a penalty. Ball placed on the Raiders

And the Steelers made them pay by scoring on the short field. Steelers up 31-21

  12. Eric Bowser says:

devasting hit by Mundy on Darius Heyward-Bey in the endzone.

  13. florida steeler says:

Time for LeBeau to go–defense pathetic against a lousy team,

  14. Eric Bowser says:

This is what happens when you have very ordinary secondary (that includes Troy Polamalu when healthy) combined with a defensive line that is doing nothing and linebackers that are overrated and unproductive.

  15. Drew71 says:

I think this defense needs some Navy SEALs training

  16. Eric Bowser says:

Drew71 – Steelers defense needs some Seal Team 6 help

  17. Drew71 says:

Tie game against the Oakland Juggernauts.

Love the Bend But Don’t Cover D

  18. Eric Bowser says:

    Yes, let’s rush 4 on 3rd down

  19. Frankie says:

How did Ziggy get hurt…I did not think he was in the game…

  20. Eric Bowser says:

    Steelers defense, Pirates pitching

    pick your poison

  21. Frankie says:

If Mundy and Colon were not on the Steelers they would be out of the NFL

  22. Frankie says:

Nice field Oakland………Get Obama to build you a stadium

  23. Eric Bowser says:

Nice of Mike Tomlin to leave a timeout on the board

  24. Eric Bowser says:

Seriously, when is the Pittsburgh media going to criticize Dick LeBeau?

This game plan to just sit back and let Carson Palmer have all the time he wants to pass is really old with a 3-4 defense.

  25. florida steeler says:

Allen, Mundy and Keenan Lewis do not belong on an NFL team bur Worilds is also horrible. This may be a very long season–secondary can cover no one and Tomlin needs to stop Brown’s hot dogging every time he makes a catch. His fumble changed the whole complexion of the game but the defense lost this one.

  26. pattonbb says:

How embarrassing. Pitt D linemen are terrible, or at least they certainly played terribly today.

What are the odds that Ben throws Haley right under the bus?

  27. Frankie says:

Eric I could not agree more…The 3-4 is getting old real quick in a couple of ways

  28. Frankie says:

Two number one picks on d line: Heyward and Hood and no rush add an old bearded end and an old fat 98 and d line has no rush.

  29. Drew71 says:

    Was it LeBeau’s game plan?

I didn’t watch the game so I’m just asking.

Did they have a passive defense or where the PLAYERS unable to penetrate the line? Did they not blitz or were the blitzes are picked up?

If the former, have at him. Give him to the SEALs.

But if the latter, then what?

  30. cosmo says:

Let the Raiders hang around. No pressure up front. Only rush 4 on 3rd and 9 and game on the line. Completely dominated stats and TOP and only lead by 3 at the half.
The D has issues, way more than 43 and 92. It’s going to be a long year.

And did I mention all of the offensive penalties.

  31. Drew71 says:

Patton – You think Ben will blame Haley because the D gave up three scoring drives in the fourth quarter?

Ben and Haley’s O scored 31 today…through THREE quarters. That SHOULD be enough.

Frankie – Is the Three-Four getting old, or are the Steelers’ players less effective than we would wish? Dallas’ Three-Four shut down a running team today.

  32. twentytwo22 says:

They have many problems and they are great.

Like Denver, the Steelers defense played well in first half, the Steelers offense was clicking but couldn’t break the game open. Week 1 because of FGs, today because of penalties on offense and special teams, 2 fumbles.

Like Denver, the Steelers defense was a sieve in second half.

They fired the wrong ST coach. Dumb penalties all 3 games.

No matter how well Roethlisberger plays the other team can sack him in a big spot.

No big plays from the defense.

Gap plugging 3-4 D-line provides 0 pass rush while NFL is in a passing era.

The Steelers have never been a point scoring team so they had better fix the defense or it’s going to be a long season.

  33. Drew71 says:

Well. At least the STEELERS have a chance to get to .500 this season.

Was that mean? I have to stop that. I just HATE being mean.

  34. twentytwo22 says:

They made Peyton Manning and Carson Palmer look like they were in their prime while the other teams made them look old. Terrible.

  35. Steve says:

Steelers need some Hell’s Angels mentality so they can unleash hell or something like that. What a pathetic performance by the defense today! Little pressure on Palmer and he picked them apart. The Raiders run game kept the Steelers on their heels too. Also, way too many penalties on the offense this game along with Kiesel’s terrible neutral zone infraction. O-line cannot create holes. Wonder if Decastro would have made a difference if he hadn’t got hurt in pre-season.

  36. WVStarship says:

  37. Frank says:

Steelers D has no capacity to make big play, no big INT’s, no big fumbles, no sacks when needed. This was too easy for a subpar QB to pick them apart. This just shows how horrible Sanchez is. What is up with the lack of blitzing? They cant cover so might as well blitz and take your chances. We were dropping 8 and Palmer still had no problem finding open people. 8 covering 4 and they get open-pathetic

  38. pattonbb says:

@Drew – I agree with you, but I think Ben’s been waiting three weeks to whine about this offense. Not saying he’d be wrong. Running game is horrible.

  39. MBS says:

Glad I spent the afternoon building my deer stand instead of watching this one slip away.

  40. DJ says:

Too many non-starter, non-impact players: Mundy, K. Lewis, Worilds (tippin’ the scales now at 270?).

Dick Lebeau: 1. If we blitz, please instruct corners to play up on receivers, not 10-12 yards off the ball. 2. Please do not blitz Larry Foote.

O-Linemen (except Willie): On running plays, it’s okay to bend at knees and waist.

  41. Karen22 says:

Steelers took the Pirates’ place in the loss column yesterday. Whoda thunk??

No running game, no pass rush, no pass defense, no discipline (penalties—-whoa!). Long season indeed.

Rainy days (at least inside) and Mondays. UGH.
