Pittsburgh sports talk with the Trib columnist

Final: Pirates 2 Braves 1

By Dejan Kovacevic | Trib Total Media

Looking ahead to first pitch …

Game: Pirates (77-82) vs. Atlanta Braves (93-66)

Time: 7:05 p.m.

Site: PNC Park

TV, radio: Root Sports, 93.7 The Fan

Here is the live box score.

And here is the Pirates’ lineup vs. Atlanta LHP Paul Maholm

  1. Starling Marte, LF
  2. Chase d’Arnaud, 2B
  3. Andrew McCutchen, CF
  4. Gaby Sanchez, 1B
  5. Michael McKenry, C
  6. Pedro Alvarez, 3B
  7. Jose Tabata, RF
  8. Clint Barmes, SS
  9. Jeff Locke, LHP

  1. Leefoo says:

Anyone know anything about this Maholm guy?

    Do we have a shot??

  2. Pat4Pgh says:

Heard he is a pitch-to-contact type ininng-eater, but we will need to see for ourselves…

  3. JUCOFan says:

I understand Maholm to be an undesirable, particularly when other compared to other pitchers, e.g. Erik Bedard and Kevin Correia.

Apparently, he does not measure well at crawling under barbed wire and scaling walls with 40 pounds of gear.

  4. Matt says:

Is anyone else having trouble getting today’s column by DK to come up?

  5. Pat4Pgh says:

No problem when I bring it up and I have lots of problems bringing up sites….

The official Pirate site freezes my computer more than 50% of the time; maybe my computer is smarter than I am…..

  6. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Many teams around baseball have celebrated Chipper Jones’s remarkable career. Do you know if the Pirates plan on doing anything special for this guy?

DK: Yes. Tonight before the game.

  7. Matt says:

That was funny! Maybe my computer is wanting me to not read DK.

  8. LuckyNKentucky says:

24/7 had a tweet about it, Ryan.

  9. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

cool, thanks lucky……..see if I can pull that up.

  10. JHadar says:

Does your web browser use Adobe Flash 11.3 to play videos? That version was totally incompatible with the Pirates website and many others besides. It caused Gameday to freeze up and the whole site would go dead until it timed out — usually longer than most people want to wait.

  11. Naje says:

DK… great nugget on the Clemente 3,000th hit bat… thanks for that and all you’ve done with the coverage this year.

I was at that game… my sister’s 12th birthday (her 52nd, today). Still have the polaroid of the old scoreboard with 3,000 plastered on it.

  12. Naje says:

DK – just to add to the above… the, “It can’t get to 21…” well, that’s priceless.

DK: It is. I get zero credit for that.

  13. Tom P. says:

I was at the game, too. I was 7 so I didn’t appreciate the significance at the time. Still, a fun claim to fame.

  14. manny _sanguine says:

I think it’s ok now for Hanny to have the Playoff Squirrel he’s growing on his chin surgically removed.

  15. Pat4Pgh says:

Thanks for input; not sure about browser, will check it out.
Not going to be on official Pirate site unless it is to read their spin on any reorganization/tweaks (as Neal calls them)….

One would think they would move Marte down in the order….nothing indicates he’ll be a leadoff guy going forward. Although there are few other options with this roster (if you want Marte in the lineup, which I do)!

  16. John Lease says:

  17. Arriba Wilver says:

John–let me make a pitch for Barmes tonight. Locke is pitching, and they are trying to get him some confidence going into the off season. So put your best defender in there.
I don’t think I’d want to see a middle infield of d’Arnaud and Harrison, or even Mercer.

  18. Thundercrack says:

Good stuff on the Mark Madden show. And thank you for providing him with facts.
    ($20 million dollar profit…yeah right)

  19. JRay3 says:

Breaking news / This just in: Matt Forte is ok to play tonight versus Cowboys.

Wait, this isn’t the MNF blog, its the Pirates Blog.

The Pirates are still playing baseball?

Just three days left until this nightmare is over!

  20. Reading says:

If any relatives of Pie Traynor were around, they would have said the streak can’t get to 20.

Honus Wagner is 33 for those interested.

  21. Pat4Pgh says:

What is your comment about the $20 million meant to indicate?

  22. Hurdled says:

    The Streak has already claimed:
    1 – Billy Meyer
    4 – Ralph Kiner
    8 – Willie Stargell
    9 – Bill Mazeroski
    11 – Paul Waner
    20 – Pie Traynor

    21 – Roberto Clemente
    40 – Danny Murtaugh
    42 – Jackie Robinson

Whatever number it finally ends on should be retired as well.

  23. Thundercrack says:

Madden tried to say that the Pirates made a profit of $20 million.

DK quickly told him that was not the case. He said no team knows their profit/loss number until around November. And he also pointed out that the Pirate payroll went up about $10 million from last year.

  24. Pat4Pgh says:

  25. John Lease says:

I get that Arriba, except with Locke pitching it’s going to take a lot of runs if they want to win. Unless of course this proves to be the night where he can hold a lead. Maybe he’ll be extra motivated since it’s against the Braves. I hadn’t known he was part of the Morton trade, but it does explain Neil’s fascination with him.

I’d rather see Karstens get the start.

  26. JMB says:

The Pirates also didn’t sign a 1st round pick this season, so that $10MM boost in payroll was somewhat offset.

The Pirates were around a $15-20MM EBITDA profit in 07 & 08 before the shareholder taxes were paid –along w. Nutting’s personal loan reimbursement, so I don’t see how it is beyond the realm that the team made $20MM this season with the boost in attendance. I’m not saying it is fact, but is it really ludicrous?

  27. JMB says:

“He said no team knows their profit/loss number until around November. ”

Wait, so you’re saying that no team is able to project earnings?

Every company in America can make reasonable projections.

DK: You guys ever get bored of this discussion?

  28. Arriba Wilver says:

When asked what he thought of honoring Chipper Jones before the game, Kyle Stark said “who’s Chipper Jones?”

  29. JMB says:

Never. I believe that the $20MM just goes back into previous debt, so BN isn’t buying yachts or refurbishing Seven Springs. But there is a healthy profit.

The Pirates ranked 28th, with $3,829,700 spent in the 2012 draft –juxtapose that number with 2011’s $17MM: The team spent $13MM less in the draft this season, so a $10MM payroll bump is easily offset.

  30. Milo Hamilton says:

    Laugh out loud at #29.

  31. scapper says:

Not to sound like an even bigger crank than I usually sound like on here, but please tell me there’s not going to be some pathetic year-long “It can’t get to 21″ thing next year because of Clemente. I love Clemente, but is there another sports team and fanbase in pro sports that is so obsessed over a player whose last game was 40 years ago?

Yesterday’s tribute was appropriate, as his 3000th hit was a monumental moment in Pgh. sports history. But man…

  32. bobhasis says:

If Mr. Nutting doesn’t get rid of a lot of deadwood (which will include FC and should further include NH), and/or if NH doesn’t get rid of a lot of deadwood which should include his useless staff of eight (8) Ass’t. Gen. Mgrs. and CH, and/or if CH doesn’t get rid of a lot of incompetent coaches – Nick Leyva comes to mind – and some players, can anyone imagine how badly The Pirate Cavalcade will fare.

If they remain “status quo”, think of the credibility loss and the lies they will have to tell (again) to sell tickets to the outer regional fans when gasoline will be 7-8 dollars /gallon, and the ticket prices were already surcharged.

They had better sell advanced tickets over at the Convention Center to insure a “throng” or a gathering of people will show up.

There is no way Nutting stands pat!!!

    You can fool some of the people. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . !!!

  33. manny _sanguine says:

I wonder if FC brought enough gum for everyone.

  34. Leefoo says:

DK…from the previous blog…you said I was ‘beyond reason’

Well…OF COURSE I’m beyond reason! I’m a frikkin Pirate Fan.
Why in Heaven’s name do you think i’d be reasonable!

And, was Marte a DL pick? Wasn’t he the Latin Scouting Director’s pick( using the same logic that you used that 4 of our top 6 weren’t NH’s choices)?

And, did Neal give back your Starbucks card yet?

    ReasonabLee Yours

  35. Leefoo says:

Scapper….number ’21’…I agree. tell Clemente’s kid to get over it.

    Geez…don’t we have ENOUGH misery?

  36. Leefoo says:

JMB…you tell DK that you’ll talk about whatever YOU want to talk about!

Who does he think he is? Drew’s buddy?

  37. bobhasis says:

As the erstwhile Gene Collier once was quoted as saying, [I paraphrase], not much happened at PNC Park this week – they fired a pierogi.

Perhaps they will fire two pierogis, a ball girl, and some ground crew members; maybe a couple of ushers and a few ticket-takers.

    Play Ball!

  38. aglebagel says:

Wish I could be there tonight to cheer for Chipper. For those who don’t know my unique baseball history (probably all of you), in October 1992 I was a Braves-crazy 7-year-old whose family had just moved from to Pittsburgh from Atlanta the month before. Needless to say, my viewing of Sid Bream’s slide was a bit different than most of yours.

Within the next few years, against all reason, the Buccos replaced the Bravos as my team, and I’ve been miserable ever since, just like all of you. Just kidding. Mostly.

However, I was still a full-blown Braves fan during Chipper’s rookie year, so I’ve always been a big fan of his. It actually would have been cool for them to commemorate his last regular season game, instead of tonight.

  39. aglebagel says:

Sorry, that should have read… “from Atlanta to Pittsburgh”

Can we get an edit button?

  40. Eric Bowser says:

Pirates fans honor Roberto Clemente and that’s a problem????????

21 is a huge number for this franchise, it is THE number everyone associates with the Pirates. The right-field wall is 21 feet high….

Cannot believe I just saw people complaining about anything to do with Clemente!

Your Pirates fan card should be revoked.

  41. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Soooo looks like Cutch won’t get the batting title either.

Posey is on fire and a lot of fun to watch…

  42. Arriba Wilver says:

Personally, I think BN made $21 Million this year.

  43. Brad, Indiana PA says:

When are you going to ask Neal about his disdain for the fans? Quite a few people airing their dislike for his, to quote Charlie Murphy, “aura” on 93.7 this afternoon…

  44. JMB says:

We’re in our own version of a Jim Carrey movie.

On his birthday, DREW, an amiable dog-catcher, takes a call that leaves him dog bit and late to pick up his TORTURED wife. She’s browsed in a bookstore, finding a blood-red-covered novel, a murder mystery with numerology that loops constantly around the number 21. The story captivates DREW: he dreams it, he notices aspects of his life that can be rendered by “21,” he searches for the author, he stays in the hotel (in room 21) where events in the novel took place, and he begins to believe it was no novel. His wife and sons try to help him, sometimes in sympathy, sometimes to protect him. Slowly, with danger to himself and to his family, he closes in on the truth…

  45. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I don’t care what NH’s “aura” is. I want production. He can be the biggest jag-off he wants to be, as long as he gets the job done.

In a way, his job isn’t the please the fans. I say in a way because he is supposed to by the product put on the field. But, if he made decisions based on what fans wanted or thought…..they’d be even worse off than what they are now or, flat-broke.

For the last part, I know fans don’t care about, as long as they are winning.

  46. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

so, Over/Under on Jeff Locke making it through the 5th inning?

  47. Leefoo says:

I love Roberto, but i don’t want our losing streak to get compared to his number.

    THAT was MY point.

Don’t bring it up! It’s bad enough!

I didn’t see any ‘don’t besmirch Pie’ chants. I don’t want to see any ‘don’t besmirch Arriba’ chants.

Now, if we lose 21 in a row and want to give the whole org a 21 gun execution, well….
    ;). ;)

  48. Leefoo says:

JMB…that was one strange movie! Stranger than ‘Cable Guy’.

Never knew Drew was a dog catcher. i DID know his wife called him a ‘flea bitten so-and-so’ but….
    ;) :)

    Cat Man Foo

  49. Leefoo says:

Ryan…Jeff is a Locke to not make it thru the 5th. unless, of course, DK predicts the same thing, in which case I’ll go for the over.

  50. JRay3 says:

@ Ryan – Well seeing that in his past three starts Locke has not made it through the 5th I will take 100 on the UNDER….wait that seems like many moons ago when times were so much better.

What happened and do I still get my Pirates hat?

  51. JMB says:

    Nice play by GS!

  52. Eric Bowser says:

Wish I could get paid millions and ‘run’ like McCann.

  53. Leefoo says:

    Ryan…number 46….agree!

    Hoka Aura Foo

  54. Brad, Indiana PA says:

I want production too. The point is he’s being a jag-off and isn’t getting the job done. I’m not asking him to pay lip service or do what fans say he should. I’m just asking he not throw out all his passive aggressive comments, saying fans just don’t understand how successful he’s been when the record clearly indicates he hasn’t been.

  55. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Because McCann gets paid millions to run…….

  56. JMB says:

I figured playoffsby2012 would come back.

I haven’t seen any posts from 2222 in quite some time.

  57. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I get the point. But to his point as well (and I’m not sticking up for him) we don’t exactly know what hand he was dealt. Sure, we can google all we want for the information that we seem to feel is important, but we’re not “in the know” so to speak.

Has he done a good job, on some things, yes, but from what I can gather (google) know he has not.

    Its time for a change.

  58. Leefoo says:

Brad….EYE understand how successful he’s been!

I can’t convince anyone of it, either.

    I feel his pain.

    Aura’d Foo

  59. Leefoo says:

Ryan…whatever hand he was dealt, it wasn’t a ‘barren’ one!

    Baron Von Foo

  60. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

@JRay…I don’t know….it was a completed season so I didnt get the chance to catch up……, mmm, no

  61. LuckyNKentucky says:

So what did they do to honor Chipper?

  62. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    nope…..and really, it wasn’t.

  63. Leefoo says:

Have fun guys…wife wants US to watch something, and it ain’t the Bucs

    (I married a smart lady?)

  64. JMB says:

    They gave him a base.

  65. JMB says:

    later on Foo

  66. Ryan (Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Looks like they gave him a bag. Probably the 3B bag. I’m sure there’s more to it than that.

  67. Reading says:

Maholm’s new career high in Ks is looming.

  68. Brad, Indiana PA says:

Killin me all day, Foo! Good stuff, lol!

  69. Reading says:

Do we have a hit yet? We haven’t been no-hit since like Friday.

Whoops, answered my own question. Hit number 1.

  70. Eric Bowser says:

    darn Foo left…

I want to ask the Huntington supporters… if 2012 isn’t the year to grade him, when is… 2014?

  71. cosmo says:

I feel like Bill Murray in groundhog day. Except he was stuck on the same day. For us
Pirates fans every year is the same.

  72. Leefoo says:

Ryan…wasn’t barren, but it wasn’t close to being mediocre.

I’d trade ALL those ‘great’ bullpen arms for one of those SPs the Nats got in ’07.

We got Cutch and Walker in’08. We got a few 4th OFers along the way. We had to wait for this year to get Marte, who we hope is our future LFer.

The on field product was all headed to Free Agency. Our starters were all fifth starters.

Nope…wasn’t barren, but it sure did suck! NH had more holes to fill than a Rochester road after a harsh winter

  73. Leefoo says:

Eric…wife is killing me right now…had to answer ryan!

Later dudes…good thing us Bucs fans have senses of humor!

    We’d be dead otherwise!

Oh yeahm the year is….mmmpghtltlttt…Wendy…I’m trying to type…dfpdffnfnfn

  74. LuckyNKentucky says:

No car? Like they gave Lou Gehrig a horseshoe of flowers in NY. What do you expect, I guess.

  75. JMB says:

    Nutting ain’t Oprah!

  76. Eric Bowser says:

Did I just hear this right? The Pirates aren’t refunding playoff ticket money until December???

  77. Arriba Wilver says:

Eric–after talking to a Nats fan friend in DC, I think that playoff ticket stuff all comes from MLB. Blame Bud on that one, not the Pirates. JMHO

  78. Eric Bowser says:

Jeff Locke IS NOT a major league starter, he needs to go to AAA and become a soft tossing lefty reliever.

  79. Reading says:

Wouldn’t it be nice if just once an ex-Pirate came in here and got completely shelled? And a guy we picked up in a trade (e.g., Locke) came back to haunt the team that dealt him away (Braves).

Nope. It will never happen in the “Land of Hoka Hey!”

  80. Reading says:

Where can I get some “mock” Pirates 2012 World Series Tickets. I mean, we were so close, the presses had to have been fired up months ago.

  81. Eric Bowser says:

    Once again, baserunning issues.

Why are these guys not running HARD!!

    That’s coaching, constant instruction.

    I hate fundamental laziness.

  82. Reading says:

“In the Land of Hoka Hey! Where the SEALS and the Hell’s Angels play!”

  83. Eric Bowser says:

Blass obviously doesn’t realize baseball instruction in Latin America is pathetic.

It is all natural talent, they are not grooming these kids to know the thinking game. The guys signed are taught these fundamentals in Dominican League, Short Season, instructionals, and up through Triple-A.

But let’s not criticize the Pirates player development staff.

  84. The Gunner says:

    @ Eric – 79

I agree with you on Locke. He might be a nice addition to the bullpen in 2013. He has 2 things going for him:

    (1) He might be able to consistently fool the hitters for one, possibly two innings and
    (2) His salary will be at the MLB minimum

  85. Arriba Wilver says:

Eric–the memo about supporting the organization went out weeks ago.

  86. cosmo says:

Maholm 6 K’s thru 3 innings on pace for career high.

  87. Matt says:

They gave Chipper a base before the game. I don’t know what’s so special about that, we’ve been giving bases away all season!!!

  88. The Gunner says:

    @ Cosmo – 87

Is that Warren Spahn or Tom Glavine back pitching for the Braves tonight?

  89. cosmo says:

I think it’s the curse of the ex Bucs

  90. cosmo says:

Do You Believe In Miracles, a caught stealing.

  91. Pat4Pgh says:

As Meatload sang ,,, One outta 12 ain’t bad! That is the song title, right?

  92. DemonDachshund says:

Re: Payroll going up by $10M…

The totals I’ve seen that have the Bucs at $62M or so are misleading, because they include all of AJ’s $16M. Unless I’m mistaken, that puts them around $54M before Wandy and such. P2 lists the 2011 payroll at around $53. I’m skeptical that the deadline moves would have increased payroll by anywhere close to $9M.

Combine that with increased attendance and decrease in draft spending… I’d be surprised if the team wasn’t pulling at least a $10M profit.

DK: I have no idea what a P2 is, but I can tell you that Major League Baseball’s official accounting process — not the Pirates’, but MLB’s, with oversight from the union — has the 2012 amount spent on payroll at $61.375 million.

  93. Reading says:

    Okay. Here we go!!!!!

  94. Milo Hamilton says:

Jeff Locke looks like Mary Carillo. That’s not a good thing.

  95. Eric Bowser says:

  96. Drew71 says:

Exciting AB to start the inning.

  97. Drew71 says:

    Six innings. A nice outing.

  98. Leefoo says:

Milo….Seriously think Locke looks like Jack White who looks like Edward Scissorshands!

  99. Leefoo says:

Drew…welcome aboard…someone called you a dogcatcher up above.

Not trying to start any trouble…and not that there’s anything wrong with being a dogcatcher, of course.

    Flealess Foo

  100. Leefoo says:

Number 98….looks like I shudda taken the ‘over’ on Locke.

  101. If NH does not sign Karstens it will be a behead him and put his head on a pike in Point State Park type offense

  102. Emmet Mahon says:

And now Blass and Brown are carrying NH’s water on the whole Karstens is not durable official party line.

  103. Eric Bowser says:

    This franchise needs a cleansing….

  104. Leefoo says:

I’d love to see McCann and Rod in a 4o yard dash…

We could probably sell commercial breaks for it?

  105. Just to press a point, Jeff Karstens has so overperformed, or put differently has done so much for this team. Neal Huntington has underperformed, and done so very little, as we learn each August.

    DK: Well put.

  106. Arriba Wilver says:

Emmet—see #86. If you can’t prove it by results, do it by intimidation. That’s this FO. Hoka Hey.

  107. Emmet Mahon says:

I guess that brilliant minor league development strategy of break the will of the players is now part of the major league handbook? I heard that the guy playing for the Braves at SS was drafted two years ago. What kind of court order will it take to get this year’s, signed, picks, get to Altoona by 2015?

  108. Pat4Pgh says:

You guys seem to forget that Neal and Kyle don’t know anything about anything Major League (other than the movie) as they have spent their entire careers doing stuff for the minor leagues (in a minor way). And for you apologists, Neal has yet to do anything, other than the obvious, for the major league team!!!!

  109. Drew71 says:

Officer, it will be the next GM’s decision. I’m sure HE won’t screw it up.

  110. Drew71 says:

Foo – How do you think I ended up with four dogs? Three of them not originally mine, by the way.

  111. Leefoo says:

Emmet…# 108, he beat out the Braves first two picks that year.

    That rarely happens….weird.

  112. RobertoForever says:

Hey, just got here. Long day catching up on work.

I see the Bucs are 2-hitting the Braves. Nice to see a Pirate doing well against his former team.

Nice outing by Locke. Several career highs. 6 IP matches career high. 2 hits, is lowest allowed in a start eligible for a decision. 5 BB’s is an unfortunate career high. 105 pitches also a career high.

Let’s Go Jared! Get Locke his first career W

  113. Leefoo says:

  114. Leefoo says:

OM/Drew…I agree….we need to sign Karstens.

Maybe avoid arb….2 or 3 year deal?

  115. RobertoForever says:

    Emmet Mahon,

Allow me to introduce to the Pirates Brock Holt. Drafted in the 9th round in 2009. Now in the majors with the Bucs.

  116. Leefoo says:

In fact, Simmons beat the Braves 2008 #1 pick to ‘the show’ (he’s still in A ball).

IF he was so good, why didn’t anyone (incl Atl) draft him higher in 2010?

Sure hope we get lucky with someone like that. The Braves screw up a first round pick and ‘hit’ on a 2nd (20% chance).

  117. Leefoo says:

Roberto….Holt is NOT a SS! Not even sure he is a 2bman. He IS a hitter, tho.

  118. Drew71 says:

    Nice game.

    I can’t believe I still care.

    But I do.

  119. RobertoForever says:

Didn’t think we were limiting the discussion to SS? or 2B? or infielders for that matter, :D

  120. The Gunner says:

    @ Cosmo – 90

Nice to see Locke get the W tonight – he pitched well. Next year’s closer, Jared Hughes, saved the game for him. Hopefully, the Bucs will get a real major league catcher for the Hammer (if he is traded.)

Also, glad to see the Bucs strap one on Maholm (FYI – he’ll never come close to Spahn or Glavine).

  121. Reading says:

    Braves eliminated from division.

  122. Eric Bowser says:

Can you imagine if the Pirates finish 80-82?

  123. RobertoForever says:

Great win by the Buccos. Great for the N.Conway, NH to join the ranks of ML pitchers with at least 1 career W. Hope its the first of many for him.

Pirates staff 2-hits the playoff bound Braves, and help the Nats clinch the division. You’re welcome, Nats fans. Bucs up to 78 wins. Glad they exceeded my preseason prediction. Thinking about coming up for the season ender on Wed with AJ on the mound. Would love to see 1 more STFD from AJ for 2012. Hate to see my appearances at PNC end with the Sunday loss.

  124. Eric Bowser says:

Imagine finishing 80-82 and instead of blowing big leads to Padres and Cubs, Pirates could have finished 82-80.

    2 games……

  125. RobertoForever says:

Seriously. Can you imagine? Would be a lot of points in the season that could be identified where 1 or 2 wins could have been made up. Oh, what if…

  126. JRay3 says:

Happy to see Jeff Locke pick up his first victory, nice to see Marte belt a HR, Hughes comes in and nicely shuts the door in the 9th.

But it is all still too little too late.

@ Eric- that would just be cruel at this point.

  127. JRay3 says:

Miguel Cabrera hits AL leading 44th HR and is just two days from becoming first triple crown winner since 1967…Jim Leyland has his club peaking at the right time, boy would I like if he wanted to return to Pittsburgh.

  128. Eric Bowser says:

Never thought I’d see a Triple Crown winner during my lifetime.

    I’m rooting for Miguel Cabrera.

  129. Arriba Wilver says:

A win is always better than a loss, but pressure’s off. These last games mean little to me in terms of what we have. If you want to revoke my fan card, so be it. But I’ve had it going on 50 years. Good for Locke, though , in any event.

  130. Reading says:

Karstens, Watson, and Hughes: the new Hughes, Grilli, and Hammer.

  131. Emmet Mahon says:

Fair enough points, but what I was getting at, and Baseball America, ESPN and others have crushed the Pirates for, is leaving players at levels for way too long. And as has been reported here, some of that is because the BMTIB wants to see how these players react to not being promoted. Nuts.

Look at Atlanta’s roster and how long it took their core to reach the bigs. Baltimore has put their top end prospects on a fast track. And Washington, and not just Strasburg and Harper. I live in Central PA and the Nats AA team is here. They don’t spend a lot of time if they put up the numbers.

What are all of those teams doing come Thursday?

Hopefully, the movement of Taillon and Cole show a willingness of the FO to adapt. But results are results.

20 years is 20 years and winning percentages don’t lie.

  132. Jandy says:

    Eric #104 ~ enema????

  133. Eric Bowser says:

@Jandy – Whatever we want to call it, everyone has to go. From ownership to broadcast crew.

  134. Jandy says:

I agree something needs to be done. On that note, since my meds are kicking in, I’m off to bed. Hopefully catch you all in the morning .

  135. LuckyNKentucky says:

It would be cruel to hit 80 wins. There were 2 games in that Reds series they should have won, let alone those big leads they lost. Could go the other way, too, I guess. If you think about it, they won 1 or 2 they shouldn’t have, also.

  136. The Gunner says:

    @ Eric – 104

If they finish with 80 wins, it will be a damn shame. Most of this blame goes to the players namely JSuc, Scabata, Bedard, Barajas, There are more but, these guys are the ones who come to mind.

  137. Thundercrack says:

Neal will let Karstens walk because he’s not one of his players.
    Oh wait….I can’t use that excuse. :-)

I could understand that they would be frustrated with Karstens’ injury history. But they would be foolish to let him go.

  138. Arriba Wilver says:

On Karstens–gotta worry about his metrics. :-)
