  1. Thank God Cole’s pitching. I don’t think this lineup could beat the United Arab Emerits.

  2. Bizrow says:

Right now, and I know its only ST, I’ll take a win anywhere we can get one.

Wonder if its too late to play the Manatees??

  3. Thundercrack says:

    Spain doesn’t have a chance

  4. NMR says:

    Anybody notice Gaby at 3B?

  5. Drew71 says:

The Greatfruit League has rules, unenforced, that even split squad teams have to have a certain number of MLBers starting. Two or three.

But since this is not a Greatfruit League game, anything goes.

Looks like what they used to do with the Manatees. (I seriously miss that game.)

And it makes sense, both as an opportunity to look at the fringe and future players, and also at the sportsmanship level.

  6. Drew71 says:

    That said…

    Remember the Maine.

  7. Drew71 says:

I should probably put this on a different thread but I’m too lazy.

    Nobody likes Gary Bettman, right?

Everyone wants a different commissioner, right?

The Great State of Florida proudly nominates the next commissioner of the National Hockey League…

    Stephen A.

  8. Playoffs by 2012 says:

How many days until Opening Day?
    The Window can’t wait…..

  9. Arriba Wilver says:

We won’t know until Groat gets back from Spring Training. :-)

  10. Iceman says:

  11. Bizrow says:

Well, he would make the budmeister look like a genius

  12. 21sthebest says:

All of a sudden I’m in the mood for Mallorca!

  13. John Lease says:

    Jared Goedert?

I thought I kept a pretty close eye on the Pirates, evidently not!

  14. gregenstein says:

Great opening day roster for the 2013 Indianapolis Indians!

I’ve seen Jared Goedert’s name in the lineup more often than Pedro or Cutch. This should tell everyone all they need to know about the meaninglessness of Spring Training numbers and performances, especially in WBC years.

  15. gregenstein says:

Jinx, you owe me a beer.

  16. Drew71 says:

    Spanish Fly for me.

    On second thought, No.

  17. Brad, Indiana PA says:

I like the idea of adding Jack Johnson. But not for Despres. If Shero trades Despres I’ll be pi$$ed. Send 2 other top D prospects, but not Despres. But then, how do you afford Letang, Martin, Orpik, Johnson and Niskanen? Something big is gona have to give in order to get Johnson- he’s $4mil cap hit. Plus they want to sign Geno.

Iginla can probably be had for less than Johnson.

All I know for sure is those 2 signings, Malkin and Letang, are gona cause some major changes soon. I could be underestimating how much cap room there will be next year, but as it sits now I think this is the case.

  18. Brad, Indiana PA says:

    Doh! wrong thread.

  19. Bizrow says:

Nah, any thread in a pinch ;-)

  20. Thundercrack says:

    Filter Drew, filter please.

  21. radio wave says:

Not first time for Gaby at third this spring. Maybe this is the year they play PA at first on occasion. My concern at this point of St isn’t the wins and loss record, it’s the too many walks particuarly with the bases loaded.

  22. Jandy says:

  23. Jandy says:

    Drew, get a room!

  24. Jandy says:

    Has he played 3B before?

  25. Jandy says:

    No Efn way!

  26. Jandy says:

Any thread is fine, Brad. I’ts a SPORTS blog ;)

I’ll be wantin to put my size 9 wides somewhere if they trade Depres!!!!

  27. Playoffs by 2012 says:

  28. gregenstein says:

Pedro’s not going anywhere this year, and I don’t want him to. It’s too hard to find a good third baseman. Gaby is playing 3rd only to spell him against lefties on occasion.

  29. kr70 says:

    more like metamucal

  30. Drew71 says:

Is the avatar readable or is the picture too small?

    Or maybe small minded?

  31. Naje says:

Trying to get him some reps there so he can get some more at bats. Could put him there (if he works out better than Harrison, Inge, et al) against a tough lefty and have another guy at 1B…

  32. Drew71 says:

“Live” picture from my car window. Parked along eastbound Interstate 4 in the Great State of Florida.

  33. NMR says:

First off, I think it would be great if Gaby could handle 3rd. I hate the way this team is constructed. They have one guy that is versatile in Josh Harrison, and he happens to be bad at baseball. Everybody else seems to be a niche player.

The problem with using Gaby to give Pedro a day off against lefties is that exposes Garret Jones, who is even worse against them. Giving Garret Jones AB’s against left handers is literally just giving up.

  34. Drew71 says:

Honestly, I think Pennsylvania is a nice state, too.

I do, however, have several complaints.

    1. Cold
    2. Hard to buy beer
    3. State income tax
    4. Philadelphia
    5. Mother-in-law
    6. pitt
    7. Hard to buy beer

  35. Jandy says:

    ahhh…thanks Naje

  36. Must be easy to buy in Florida. You swilled enough of it last night.

  37. Jandy says:

Hard to buy beer? Heck, just go to Sheetz or Giant Eagle…what are you talkin about??? :P

Philadelphia, I can see the complaint lol

  38. Jandy says:

  39. 21sthebest says:

I would have put mother-in-law ahead of Philthadelphia.

  40. gregenstein says:

“The problem with using Gaby to give Pedro a day off against lefties is that exposes Garret Jones, who is even worse against them. Giving Garret Jones AB’s against left handers is literally just giving up”
Oh, I know. I wasn’t saying it would usual for them to use Gaby @ 3B when a lefty pitches. I could see them doing it though if Garrett is hot and Pedro is in a slump. Or maybe Pedro hasn’t had a day off in a couple weeks and just needs a blow. It certainly would not be a straight platoon by any stretch of the imagination. Just think about how McGehee was used last year…similar role for Sanchez. He’ll end up playing mostly at 1B, but he’ll sub for Pedro when necessary.

  41. Iceman says:

I don’t know how they make the salary stay under the cap for next year. This is why it is even more important for them to win this year. I see a potential for this roster to get blown up in the offseason in order for them to stay under the cap in the future. With the way Despres is playing, I don’t really want to lose him, but in order to get the type of player the Pens want to pick up (scoring winger or defensive minded defenseman), they are going to have to give up someone and that person will have to be a player with a big upside (aka Despres).

  42. JohninOshkosh says:

    Vamos Piratas!

  43. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc says:

maybe he meant the old fishing show….It was good.

  44. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc says:

No problem with this, I really wanted to see Russell Martin at SS.

  45. Jason81 says:

I would have LEFT my mother-in-law in Philthadelphia.

  46. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc says:

glad to see the window coming back!!!

  47. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc says:

#1 is the the #1 factor of me not returning as well Drew.

  48. Iceman says:

Zack Boychuck was claimed off waivers by the Predators.

  49. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc says:

you can buy beer there now? I thought only at distributors?

Florida is much easier for beer consumption.

  50. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Not official yet, but planning on making an official announcement either way later this month. Hopefully on DK’s radio show.

  51. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc says:

I4 is terrible!!! Always has been and always under construction.

  52. Drew71 says:

If you’re suggesting that the beer had anything to do with me getting naked to support the Pens, let me tell you, mister. I can get naked to support any team when I’m Stone Cold Sober.

Well. Let’s leave Cold out of it. That can lead to small complications.

(I have something I could say about the Rally Poodle thing but I’ll let it pass.)

  53. 21sthebest says:

    Bennett was recalled.

  54. Drew71 says:

Well. To be fair. I find consumption pretty easy anywhere. It’s the purchase that I was questioning.

  55. Drew71 says:

    Let the screaming begin

  56. 21sthebest says:

Sounds like you need a new inventory ordering system.

  57. Jandy says:

C’mon Drew dahling, let’s hear all about the Rally Poodle thing…spill it! I’m sure it’s no small feat ;)

  58. Drew71 says:

But is has this lovely roadside sign.

  59. Jandy says:

  60. Jandy says:

Sure can. I personally don’t, it’s more expensive, but you can locally in Sheetz and Giant Eagle.

  61. Jandy says:

Can’t argue the COLD thing. I *HATE* winter and I *HATE* snow. Speaking of, we’re to get 8 to 10 inches of that detestable stuff starting 10pm tonight until sometime tomorrow afternoon. SHEESH! I’m heading to Punxsutawney some time soon and shoot that &%^$#@ rodent!

  62. Jandy says:

  63. Jandy says:

  64. Jandy says:

    I’d rather have StevieY.

  65. Jandy says:

can we have target practice with the sign???

  66. Brad, Indiana PA says:

Tyler Kennedy has HUGE upside. He scored 20 goals 2 years ago.

  67. Brad, Indiana PA says:

Yeah I guess that’ll teach DK for putting the Pirate thread up so early in the morning. The outcry may be deafening- especially since the Duquesne thread goes up last minute in comparison to the Bucs.

  68. NMR says:

You’re right. I just needed to vent.

  69. 21sthebest says:

Cole struck out the side on 13 pitches.

  70. Bizrow says:

So what the heck does Drew’s new avatar sign say?

  71. Jandy says:

  72. Jandy says:

I can’t see avatars here at work…they don’t come up for some reason. But from above something about I4 highway?

  73. Eat at Drew’s. South Florida’s finest Diner, Drive-In and Dive>

  74. Jandy says:

That’s one of the things I like about NMR, he isn’t afraid to admit when he’s wrong or someone else is right ;)

  75. He’s ready. Number 3 starter now.

  76. That’s refreshing in this day and age when nobody is ever wrong and nothing is ever anyone’s fault.

  77. Nobody has put a bat on the ball yet in fair territory. He K’d the side in the second, also.

    18 strikes and 8 balls.

  78. Jandy says:

Looks like the puppy will show some of the big dawgs how it’s done!

  79. 21sthebest says:

Triple D is like my favorite show!

  80. Bizrow says:

  81. Jandy says:

    SURE IS…

  82. A Guy Fierri fan, eh?

Drew can’t fool anyone. That bunk about him being in medical consulting is a bunch of hokum.

We all know he runs a greasy spoon in Cocoa Beach.

  83. Jandy says:

    You mean Hooey, noy hokum

  84. NMR says:

    Tell that to my fiance!

  85. 21sthebest says:

My wife gives me a hard time about it though because I never eat like that.

  86. Jandy says:

Let me repost this up here…Spunky you mean Hooey, not Hokum ;)

  87. Drew71 says:

    You really can’t read it?

    Good Is In The Details

Sign in front of a PF distribution center next to exit 31 on the westbound side of I-4. I pass it going to/from Cocoa Beach each week.

  88. Drew71 says:

Let’s put it next to the charity sign.

  89. Bizrow says:

    + 100

  90. radio wave says:

Bucs jump all over the relief pitcher for Spain. I couldn’t find a radiocast of this game. Is the Pirates radio crew bilingual??

  91. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc says:

That is true and I thought of that after I typed that in…can’t be Publix

  92. Arriba Wilver says:

  93. Drew71 says:

    I hope they pile on.

I still haven’t forgiven the Inquisition.

  94. Drew71 says:

I never get tired of you saying that

  95. Thundercrack says:

    Have they fired Bylsma yet?!

  96. Jandy says:

    What did I say?????

  97. Jandy says:

  98. Ghost says:

Arrived at DK’s landing page to see this tweet scroll by:
“And for record, I neither know nor care how #Hawks compare to Miami’s basketball team. That’s almost as immaterial as NBA is in Pittsburgh.”
Took me a while to figure out the whole tweet was NOT about the NBA and its Atlanta Hawks. (I’m not one who laments the ample hockey talk around here; as you can see, I just blithely keep it tune it out.)

  99. Jandy says:

  100. Ghost says:

Were you lurking in the New World back then?

  101. Jandy says:

I’m still waiting to hear about the Rally Poodle thing…. just sayin’

  102. Jandy says:

    pppfffffttttt!!!! :P

  103. Karen22 says:

I’ll shoot him for you, Jandy—he lives just 30 miles down the road from me. Turn right out of our development and drive a half hour…

  104. Karen22 says:

  105. Karen22 says:

    Ditto on the YAY!!!

  106. Karen22 says:

Can’t wait for the “excuse” (read: $$$) on why he won’t head north with the club to start the season.

  107. True, hooey. Hokum is an old American Indian remedy.

  108. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc says:

He started out here in California. Main/1st restaurant in Santa Rosa.

  109. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc says:

    Thought the same thing…..

  110. Definite Cali guy, right?

  111. Nice day for Gaby. 3 for 3 with an HR. Too bad it’s against what DK calls AA competition.

  112. Bizrow says:

I’m still thinking they might move the Legend, just sayin

If not this year, then next for sure, due to $$$$$$

  113. Hope not, but there are a few of his clones around this season.

  114. Arriba Wilver says:

    I see Gaby’s batting 1.000 with a home run. Neal’s a genius!

  115. Now, all we have to do is figure how to play him in Altoona and we’ll be fine.

  116. NMR says:

Legend better repeat 2012, not 2010/2011 or else he’ll be an easy DFA. Having Gaby only makes it easier.

  117. JohninOshkosh says:

God, I hope the Legend saga doesn’t end with a whimpering DFA. His market value, whatever that is, is at its highest now. Pirates have to gamble with him and hope he continues with last year’s numbers-for the good of the team and/or for the good of his value.

  118. Bizrow says:

  119. Ghost says:

Right, yeah? (Now just be ready to duck that same hockey puck that came “pppfffffttttt!!!!” by my head a moment ago. ;) )

  120. Bizrow says:

So do you take a shot with one of the clones if you can get a good return for him?

  121. Bizrow says:

Speaking of trades, the Tigers are supposedly back on the market to obtain a closer

  122. 21sthebest says:

Speaking of Tiger, he’s reportedly back with Elin.

  123. 21sthebest says:

Phillies losing to the Dominican 13-1.

  124. Think like Neal. Probably.

  125. Guess they aren’t AA. Probably playing the Phil’s AA players.

  126. Bizrow says:

    24 hits to boot

Why didn’t they throw those guys against us yesterday?

  127. Bizrow says:

Did she have a 7 iron with her?

  128. JohninOshkosh says:

What about Lindsey Vonn? Is that over already?

  129. Bizrow says:

    Think like Neal

    Hmmm, thats a bit scary.

    Maybe Drew will do it??

  130. Dom says:

When I first read through that lineup, I thought it was for our opponents.

  131. 21sthebest says:

Jones is cheap for what he produces.

  132. NMR says:

You’re right, John. The Pirates have to gamble with him this year.

But I just don’t think the odds are with them. GIJ(at age 32) has two more trips to the arbitrator, meaning he becomes an awfully expensive specialist unless he continues his play from last year.

In a perfect world, Gaby returns to form, Marte settles into his tools, and Snider/Tabata/Sands shows they can play right field. That enables the Pirates to use GIJ as a bench bat. One that can actually, you know, hit.

  133. NMR says:

Right now. And for last years production.

We just saw this with Hanrahan. Player value changes so quickly.

  134. Arriba Wilver says:

I see (hear) AJ didn’t bite on DK’s question about the trade deadline last year. They’re probably all tired of talking about it.

  135. JohninOshkosh says:

The lineup for the Dominicans (cue The Singing Nun) was solid. Watched the beginning of it at lunch.

  136. NMR says:

  137. Sisyphus says:

Because Spain does not appear on the 2013 Pirates schedule.

  138. Nate83 says:

Amen is right!!! It’s a story that should have never went on for this long. If they went “all in” they would still not have made the playoffs and would be left with a weaker group of prospects. Thank god they didn’t go “all in”. It’s not like Wandy was a horrible pick up and if Gaby allows us to trade Jones for some value then even the better.

  139. They have 28 now and 15 runs. Cole Hammels started that game for Philly and gave up 12 hits in less than 3 innings.

  140. Jandy says:

Give me her contact info and I will ;)

  141. Jandy says:

    go get ‘im Karen! Lol

  142. 21sthebest says:

Seems like each story has legs that lasts about 3-4 years. I think we finally stopped talking about the Aramis Ramirez trade in ’07, Bay in ’11, I think we’re finished talking about Bautista, so I figure Crisis on Federal Street: The Trade Deadline 2012 will be history sometime prior to the next Presidential election.

  143. NMR says:

    It’s also about production, Karen.

Bringing Cole up to start the season makes him a free agent after 2018. Delaying his call up by just a few months pushes back free agency until 2020.

Would you rather have two months of 22 yo rookie Gerrit Cole or a full year of 28 yo veteran Gerrit Cole?

  144. Jandy says:

Better watch out for the size 9 wides! :P

  145. Baywatch says:

Wasn’t that a hit by Englebert Humperdink? “Blue Spanish … Oh, that was “Blue Spanish EYES!”

  146. Jandy says:

  147. NMR says:

Unless, by some crazy occurance, the team actually wins.

You don’t hear a lot of Braves fans complaining about getting fleeced in the Teixeira trade.

  148. Arriba Wilver says:

Nate83—there’s a HUGE difference between saying we don’t want to talk about it anymore and saying what happened was the right thing to do. Should have stopped after “this long.” Just sayin’ ;-)

  149. kr70 says:

    wishing they were

  150. Nate83 says:

Based on what happened the rest of the year it was the right thing to do. No two player are worth 10-12 wins over 54 games it would have taken to put them even near the playoffs. If your goal was to finish .500 that’s fine, but I don’t believe that is the goal of any front office. Even if it’s one that is leading a team that has the all time consecutive losing streak.

If you use the no trades being deflating to the team theory then we already have a group of players I don’t want on the team. Plain and simple those guys where 16 games above .500 and they received a pitcher that made them better immediately and they didn’t get it done. For one time in this horrible streak we actually got lucky and by doing nothing we benefited.

  151. John Lease says:

    Great minds think alike…

  152. MrB says:

Just saw the box score…can we schedule Spain for Interleague play?

Gaby Sanchez is becoming an interesting piece of the Pirate puzzle.

  153. Bizrow says:

I’m still ticked about the Bay trade

    Just sayin ;-)

  154. Arriba Wilver says:

Sounds like you’re not tired of talking about it. To me, at this point, it doesn’t help us one iota this year either way. We are who we are, and we’re going to win or lose regardless of whether LAST YEAR’S trade deadline moves or lack thereof made sense. And it sure as heck isn’t going to help if the players are thinking about it. And while he didn’t say that exactly, that’s what I think AJ was getting at.

  155. TJ says:

Bad example. You don’t hear the Braves fans complain much about anything. Might be as spoiled in baseball as we are in football. They don’t bother showing up for most playoff games any more. They’d be complaining had they not made the playoffs the previous 20 years and made that deal. Fans in ATL have faith in their front office.

  156. 21sthebest says:

I don’t feel any differently about Gaby today, than I did 3 weeks ago.

  157. He has something to prove. He says he’s healthy and that’s the difference. We’ll see what he does against AAA pitching now.

Maybe Boston will throw some major leaguers tomorrow.

  158. Bizrow says:

Well, we are lunatics, we have to talk about something?

  159. Karen22 says:

Aware of that…can’t wait 20 more years is all. When is NOW? If Cole is ready, now is NOW.

  160. Arriba Wilver says:

  161. Arriba Wilver says:

On the KDKA Showdown this week they said in his interview on the Fan, Neal said if Cole was one of the 25 best he would go north. Didn’t hear it myself, but I had seen Neal in the past in answer to that question use his usual mumbo jumbo about not rushing people, with no indication that there was any chance. I understand you can reconcile those statements, but the shift in focus made me wonder if, because of the shift this year to “win this year or else,” he might actually mean it.
