  1. Gotta get it in: Go Pens!

    Morrow for Morrow ? Hmmmmm.

  2. It’s always a great day to beat Philadelphia.

  3. Outside of Iginla, Brenden Morrow is the trade deadline player I most liked for the Pens ans their current situation. Another former captain and role model player who will bring them great leadership on and off the ice with solid veteran play and goal scoring capabilities. Joe Morrow was a good prospect but the Pens still have plenty of D prospects, and prospects are for the future. Joe Morrow isn’t going t help this team this season or probably even next so even if he pans out to be a solid pickup for the Stars, you just can’t fault the Pens for making this deal. This isn’t the Pirates people, no reason to hoard ridiculously for the future when a cup is within their reach now and it’s not like this leaves them hurting for future prospects even if this doesn’t get them the cup. I guess the Pens will have to fall back on the other half dozen or so D prospects in the pipeline now.

I also like the fact that he choose the Pens trade option over the Bruins which makes the Bruins less threatening if they meet in the playoffs. I just hope they don’t land Iginla instead. Now the Pens can focus on maybe a 3rd, fourth liner and a top 4 shutdown defenseman over the next 10 days.

  4. Good general managers have a knack of trading their “prospects” before everyone else realizes they stink.

    • I’m reading a ton of revisionist Penguins fans talking about the prospect value and status of Joe Morrow. Pretty funny considering many said he was untouchable unless a long-term winger is acquired… what happens but a rental type and they still love it.

I wanted Morrow, pretty sure I had his name in one of my posts awhile back but just surprised the cost was the top D prospect.

      • Rentals are always expensive in that fashion, but who knows, Billy G was signed by the Pens, so who knows if Morrow will be signed by the Pens after this season or not. If he fits well, he might be affordable enough since he’s only making $4 million now. Plus; the Pens moved a 5th round pick for a 3rd. Not bad.

I guess the Pens will have to suffer and make do with all their other 1st round and highly touted D prospects.

  5. Just a note on the face shield issue: I think its a no brainer, 70% or more of the players are wearing them already. Just “grandfather” it in like they did with helmets years ago.

Thinking about the “grandfather helmet” issue caused this old fart to have a blast from the past flashback.

I am seeing Ron Dugay flying around the old Igloo ice , 86, 87 I think, those long curly locks windswept behind him! One of the last few guys not to wear a helmet.
Played pretty well with the Rangers not so much with the Pens – but the ladies just LOVED him!!! LOL

Attempted to paste a picture but would not take it, not that I have a clue about that stuff!

    • Craig McTavish sticks in my head as being among the last to not wear helmets. But he didn’t have the hair Dugay did.

  6. How many games have the Pens won against Philly in their Blue jerseys?

  7. Jeffrey with two good chances but can’t get the puck on net.

  8. Nationally televised game…so tragically denied the pleasure of Coatesy observations.

  9. If Pens can keep the puck down low against Flyers defense, they are going to wear down and Pens speed and skill will then pounce on open ice for scoring chances.

  10. Pens missing on a lot of decent scoring chances.

  11. Crosby Sucks! Crosby Sucks!…oppps, sorry…I just thought something was clearly missing until I realized they weren’t playing in Phillthy. ;)

  12. Unreal the bush league crap the Flyers use to delay the game and the officials allow it. Surprised the goalie didn’t have equipment issues as well.

    • Nice to see the officials even up their own non-call with a ticky-tack call against the Flyers…should have just called them for delay of game when they should have when they put 6 men out on the ice..

  13. I’m confused about the backlash on the Morrow for Morrow trade.

Anyone we would have acquired would have required at least a first round pick. We gave up 2 #1 picks for the Hossa rental.

I’d imagine this takes us out of the Iginla sweepstakes but still have our draft picks to use in order to go after a defenseman if thats what they decide to do.

Besides Shero owed the Stars a little after the Neal deal…lol

    • I see we get their 3rd and they get our 5th as well.

    • Agreed. Even if this doesn’t result in a cup, the trade was a good one and the Pens didn’t give up too much at all.

    • I like to call it “prospect love”. It’s loosely defined as an unhealthy attachment & wild overvaluing of someone you’ve never seen play. It’s really prevalent in baseball. I blame Billy Beane.

      • lol. Also kinda like hoarding…afraid that everything may be worth more than it really is, and shouldn’t be gotten rid of just in case. I mean, if we get rid of Joe Morrow, who will score that Cup game winner in 2020?

        • Last summer someone posted that they didn’t want to see the Pirates make a mistake like they did with Moises Alou for Zane Smith. Mistake ? Smith helped them win 3 divisions & gave them a shot to win the World Series each of those years. That was hardly a mistake.

      • I can’t imagine the flurry of posts had the Pirates traded a prospect. I recall some backlash when Rudy Owens (Rudy Owens!) was traded for Wandy Rodriguez.

  14. And that’s why Kennedy needs to go.. you can’t blow that chance.

  15. I’m really excited about the chances of our top 2 lines now; heck even 3 lines if they keep Bennett with Malkin and Neal and put Morrow with Sutter and Cooke.

I don’t think Shero is done

    • Yup. they should be able to build 3 strong lines either way. I would be surprised though if Morrow doesn’t stick with one of the top 2.

    • Bylsma has some good options as he could go

      Bennett-Malkin-Neal or Morrow-Malkin-Neal
      Morrow-Sutter-Cooke or Cooke-Sutter-Bennett

I think Penguins will keep Tanner Glass at LW and Craig Adams at RW, so figure Tyler Kennedy or Joe Vitale will be traded for a veteran center. Phoenix has scouted the last two games at Consol and I think Boyd Gordon would be candidate for 4th line C because he’s good on draws and proven on PK.

For some insane reason, Bylsma just won’t use Vitale on the PK.. I don’t know why.

  16. The Flyers, after 6 days off, looked a bit rusty and slow there. The Pens really let them off the hook in that period. Should have had at least a couple goals if they were sharper. Hope it doesn’t come back to bite them.

  17. Jandy…. what are you doing here…. Holy week started today

  18. 0-0 after first period but Pens could have had four or five goals if they hadn’t missed the net on at least 6 scoring chances and a few others were stopped by Bryzgalov.

The second period won’t be as kind to the Flyers.

  19. I’m confused… If a team is going all-in for a championship, doesn’t that mean they should trade for promising minor leaguers from non-contending teams?

  20. Pens still not putting those chances in the net. Not good.

    • We have Dustin Jeffrey leading the rush on our SECOND line. With Beau Bennett on one wing. It would be interesting if Malkin were in this game with the chances Jeffrey has had. Then again I doubt that he would have the space.

      • Yup. Gotta finish when you get the opportunity though. Eventually, especially in a tight scoring game, a goal not scored is just like a goal for the other team.

  21. Despres has to stay in lineup… great talent!!

  22. Jeez could Timmonen be any more obvious on his hold on Sid against the boards?

  23. The best thing about the Morrow trade? I have yet to hear Shero say the words “years of control.”

  24. I’ll go out on a limb and say we get that 5th round pick back for Tyler Kennedy

  25. Fleury please stay in the net; crazy bounces tonight

  26. Interesting comment; looking to add to our top 9. Did not say our top 6.

  27. C’mon PK. Don’t make it easy for them.

  28. I cannot stand Tanner Glass

  29. Nice elbow to the head area

  30. Time for the Pens stars to step up. Outplaying the Flyers for the whole game and give them the only goal on a PP. That’s what makes all those missed scoring chances even worse.

  31. Listening to the radio feed and if I gotta hear Lange say: “and he just couldn’t put it in the net” one more time….

  32. Now, if this was the Bruins or Canadians, the Pens would be winning and the streak would go on, but because it’s the Flyers, no matter how badly they are being out played, they will more than likely win and end the streak, just like they’ve always don’t. WTF? I’m convinced you could dress a bunch of homeless, elderly women in Orange and Black and the Pens would either lose to them or make it way more difficult than it has to be.

  33. Time to fire Bylsma yet?

  34. One period to defend the streak…

  35. Is that the 14th time a Pen missed the net?

  36. Are the ice conditions really bad? This is a really sloppy game

    • Can’t blame it on the ice. Pens have been sloppy in this game and allowing Flyers easy attempts to block shots.

Come playoff time, if forwards don’t shift laterally with puck, it is too easy to clutch and hold and block shots.

This game is like Penguins vs 1996 Florida Panthers, refs just letting Flyers get away with a ton of holding.

      • Thanks – haven’t been watching the whole game. What I’ve seen is pucks and players bouncing all over.

Special Teams the story of a Pens-Flyers game again?

  37. really dumb penalty by Simmonds… everyone is watching you on that play.

  38. Great shot. Let’s get another one!

  39. Jeffrey stinks

  40. If this trade means I never have to look at Dustin Jeffery again, I would have sent the whole minor league system for Morrow.

    • Every once in a blue moon, he’ll score a pretty goal – pick the corner. You’ll think that maybe he can put it together and be more productive. At this point, it’s doubtful that he will put it together. Too afraid of contact to be a grit player and too hesitant to be an assertive playmaker.

  41. Freakin Overtime! Let’s do it Pens!

  42. No freakin way did Kennedy just score a big goal. Move him to the 2nd line!!

  43. Tyler Freakin Kennedy wins the game :)

  44. OMG….. Kennedy scores in OT

    12 in row!

    Fire Bylsma!

  45. How many is that now ? I’ve lost count.

  46. as I was saying… fake shot, change angle and get the opening… TK did it perfectly.

  47. I’m just glad Scott Fartsmell didn’t end the streak. I do not like that person.

  48. Hopefully, some really desperate general manager saw that overtime.

  49. Well, I’m amazed they were able to do it. This had loss written all over it especially seeing as how they were getting none of the bounces for the first 50 minutes and when it comes to Pens/Flyers, we know if the Pens can lose to anyone, it would be them.

With this win and the past few come from behinds, I’m convinced now that this team is ready for a long playoff run. In the beginning of the season, I was convinced they weren’t.

    Tyler Friggin Kennedy!…who knew!

  50. One thing about Kennedy, he’s not afraid to shoot the puck. You are not always sure
where it’s going to end up, but he’ll shoot it.

  51. Coburn will probably be missing some upcoming games for that hit on Dupuis. Maybe 2 games, but don’t know of his history.

  52. Question? Does the flyer who rammed Dupuis into the boards get a phone call from Shanahan this week.

  53. Penguins have won 12 in a row and only given up 9 goals in the last 8 games.

Tremendous turnaround defensively and in goal.

  54. Brenden Morrow is married to Guy Carbonneau’s daughter.

  55. Anybody have both LaSalle and Florida Gulf Coast in their sweet sixteen? Just one of ‘em?

Florida Gulf Coast had OPEN TRYOUTS before the season!
