  3. Time to release TC, AW, Milo, Drew and all Pirates faithful from the world of pucks and traded hockey sticks.

    This IS the Pirates thread.

Saw Matt Moore in Low-A here in KY just a few years ago. We were duly impressed by him. Shocked to see him pitch in the playoffs a couple years ago, as he really moved through the minors quickly.

Then I believe they signed him long term like they did Evan Longoria.

Love to see that aggressive approach to winning baseball.

  4. Arriba Wilver says:

I think the #4 and #5 will be Sanchez and McPherson, probably in that order. But what do I know?

  5. McPherson and Leroux both pitched like Biz’s dogs and Drew’s wife’s poodle their last starts, but I think you’re right. They like McPherson better than Locke.

Hurdle left him out there for 4 2/3 to take that beating, too.

  6. Arriba Wilver says:

EYE like McPherson better than Locke. Locke just doesn’t seem to have the right mental makeup. Plus, McPherson is taller.

  7. John Lease says:

It should have been the Pirates honor, but Barajas was just given his unconditional release from the Diamondbacks.

  8. True. TC likes him for that and so does Neal. Much better downward plane than Locke.

  9. Biz mentioned that before. Where do you guys get these tidbits?

  10. John Lease says:

I’ve resisted this manfully, but will give in.

Clifton Virginia, originally from Export, PA.

  11. NMR says:

I think its a little bit nuts to trust Sanchez’s last two starts over Sanchez’s last two years, but I don’t think it hurts the team terribly to give him 4-5 starts rather than risk losing him.

McPherson is probably the best of the three, but it seemed like he was showing a lot of “rookieness” this spring. Heard about him up in the zone and missing the feel for the breaking ball which sounds a lot like overthrowing. Doesn’t sound like a terrible idea to back the pressure off a bit and let him find himself in AAA.

I’ve heard a lot of people say Locke hasn’t blown anybody away, which seems fairly obvious. He’s 5th starter material. But looking at last season, Jeff Locke failed because of the long ball and because he couldn’t prevent the big inning. When you consider he’s only given up one homerun in 22 innings and hasn’t allowed more than 2 ER in any given inning this spring, you have to consider that a positive.

Sanchez and Locke open the season with a chance to prove themselves once and for all, but are fair game for replacement come May with Liriano, Karstens, and McPherson.

  12. Thundercrack says:

    Ha!
Actually, for some reason, I have been rooting for Locke.

  14. Thundercrack says:

I mentioned this yesterday, but during his radio show NH was talking about Sanchez and he seemed to temper any excitement about Sanchez and his last 2 outings.

Winning baseball, we don’t need no winning baseball … We are the PBC with the BMTIB …..

  17. Arriba Wilver says:

I can’t see them opening with Locke and McPherson both in the rotation. Which may mean that’s exactly what they will do.

  18. Drew71 says:

    This I don’t understand.

    If Neal said something like…
“He’s pitched better lately but let’s not get excited. His last two years have not been good.”

…then why even bother to acquire him?

  19. Quadruple amen.

He always talks out of both sides of his mouth and it has more than two sides to it.

  20. Drew71 says:

If Nutting won’t fire Neal, can he at least hit Neal’s mute button?

  21. JohninOshkosh says:

    Biz:

A few weeks ago someone from Anchorage Alaska posted.

  22. radio wave says:

Did that homerun just cost him his chance for a rotation spot?

  23. Duct tape would work.

  24. Which one of the 3?

  25. National Mart of Records,

If we took your first sentence to be policy, Bucs would not have acquired AJ Burnett. Bucs would not have acquired Jason Grilli. Bucs would not have acquired Liriano.

As long as this team retains its “Hope they get better” attitude——some refer to it as Dumpster Diving——Pirates’ best hope is to take a cheap flyer on Jonathan Sanchez. At one time he was VERY good, e.g., no-hitter. He’s got more raw ability than Jeff Locke and, probably, McPherson. It’s only for 2 months anyway . . . . then Karstens and Charlie Morton and Gerrit Cole all begin to come into play.

I like Sanchez at #4 (Bedard clone) and McPherson at #5 to start the season.

  26. Are you an inmate at the prison there?

  27. I’m REALLY excited for Bucs to open season . . . . . . until I look out my window!!

  28. I heard that comment on his show, Cracker, and I thought it was one of the more foolish comments I had heard in a while.

  29. Rays 6 — Pirates 2

Bucs clinch another losing Grapefruit League record. Feels normal.
