  1. Is this AJ’s first start against a Major League team in a month?

Hope he does well——I’d like to see him make the team.

    What??? Jeanmar??

  2. I’m all talked out about baseball.

Anything going on with the Pens?

  3. I am SO HAPPY that I get to continue to sing
    867-53o9 into the season.

Do you think he’ll make their playoff roster?

  4. That ‘Pirates’ page links to Duquesne…

  5. Twins first batter gets a single

  6. Dee Gordon, late of Pirate infatuation, was sent to AAA. Former Bucco, Luis Cruz, will handle shortstop duties for the Dodgers in Hanley Ramirez’ stead.

  7. Dang, bases loaded, one out

  8. Due to lack of hitting with men on base, sadly, the Bucs will lose a lot of games again this year. They have good pitchers who will hold the opposition close, but they need hitters.
Why they keep Sir Whiffs-alot (Alverez) in the lineup continues to amaze me. He really isn’t a very good 3rd baseman. Put somebody more reliable at 3rd. Another losing season for our Pirates.

  9. Dear Lord, Martin by pitch

  10. Errrr hit by pitch

  11. OK how’s this one:
    AJ plunked Vargas

  12. So I can’t wait for next years NFL season to be over already. Based on the mass exodus of players via free agency the Steelers should find themselves with quite a few compensatory picks in next years draft. All of which will be traded by Ray Shero.

  13. Out of curiosity whatever happend to Jose Contreras? I know the Pirates signed him to a MLC. Is he still in minor league camp?

  14. ha! Josh Harrison doubles.

  15. Groat,

On our previous discussion of Garrit Cole. One year of service time is 172 days. They need only leave him down for 2 weeks to keep him an extra year. Same situation the Rays had with Evan Longoria a few years back.

As Drew said yesterday, the 2nd time the 5th starter has to pitch will be April 16th at home against St. Louis. The only reason Cole doesn’t make that start will be financial, not related to service time.

  16. Lets change topics just for one minute… Anyone else been watching what has been going on in North Korea?

This kid is either going to have to back up all his talk or be shamed by his country. He’s talked a big game so far and made a lot of noise. If he backs down he will be the joke of his country and he hasn’t even been in power for a year.

Where are the drone strikes when you need one?

  17. How desperate are the Yankees…. They signed Lyle Overbay.

Hang in there Milo that baseball might still have some value

  18. Midseason form for the PBC sticks, two innings, 5 hits, ONE stinking run….

Just getting some practice, season starts Monday, gotta be ready to complain….

  19. Buster Olney had a good write-up (ESPN Insider) about the Astro’s and the potential for them to “tank” this year. It made sense, the lower you end up in the standings, the more $$ you get to spend in both the Rule 4 Draft and in the international market.

Astros payroll has gone from 100 MM to 25 MM in three or four years, and of the 25 MM this year, 5 MM goes to the PBC for Wandy.

So, sounds like the Stros game plan is to lose, no incentive to win right now.

Well, thats how the Pens earned the right to draft Mario…

    • You know what I think is the funniest part of this? Scott Boras just threw a public hissy fit because he said this is exactly what teams are doing, which in turn is leaving less money for his veteran clients.

During 2008 and 2009, Nats GM Mike Rizzo admittedly let his team tank using the same process as the Astros to ensure they would have the #1 overall pick. This was a move many people have said Boras advised. Both of those picks, of course, were Boras clients Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper.

      • And the Budmeister has gone on record saying what the Astros are doing is the right and logical thing to do.

        Go figure…

Also the guy that recommended our beloved Frankie to the PBC….

        • I don’t see what’s wrong with what the Astros are doing. There are cycles, things change. If you’re going to be bad, you might as well save up.

Note: I wasn’t in favor of trading Bay, Nady, McLouth, Freddy and his wife Jack.

          • Why are you trotting out that old slur about Jack and Freddy? They were close friends and a great double-team tandem. So what?

            • It was a joke. I really didn’t mean anything by it except that there was some thought that they were in cahoots as to staying or leaving.

              • Okay.
And I don’t think Wilson or Freddy made any secret of wanting re-up together and stay in Pittsburgh. Wilson accepted his contract offer pretty easily. Sanchez was slightly lowballed by Huntington, but then Huntington pulled the offer anyway, only about a day later. The latter didn’t want to give Freddy the chance to think about it and actually accept. But things worked out for Freddy. He got his money and a ring too. Pirates fans got… who? Aki Iwamura? Can’t even remember anymore. It’s a blur until Walker got moved over.

              • Wilson accepted his contract offer? I wouldn’t call what Sanchez was offered as slightly lowballed and the offers had deadlines.

            • Play nice boys!

        • Not trying to win, I guess, was Buster’s argument about credibility.

That and the way the system is set up can encourage someone to tank it

          • So is he not in favor of “rebuilding” at all? Is he against giving up at the trade deadline even when you’re clearly out of it?

            • Not trying to speak for Buster, but he referenced Pete Rose for example and this action being similar to losing the credibility of the public by not trying to win for several years. I think the key thing is “trying” over the course of several years.

Next time I see Buster, I will ask him ;-)

    • Vincent Tremblay.

    • Would have loved to have seen what the Pirates would have done had they had the #1 pick when Strasburg or Harper were available. Probably would have taken the second coming of Brian Bullington.

  20. So with Rushel Shell leaving Pitt, how juicy will it be if he follows Todd Graham to Arizona State ?

  21. Woah! Cards 10 Nats 1

  22. Russell Martin threw out Bernier trying to steal second. Things are looking up, boys! ;)

  23. From Dejan’s latest tweets, sounds like we are getting a new reporter to help cover the PBC. Travis Sawchik

A new chew toy for the blog (just kidding, kinda)

Wonder what that does to Rob B’s gig?

    • A new reporter to help cover the PBC. Does the PBC really need a reporter to cover them in the first place?

We need 48 hours investigates to do an episode on the death of the PBC that has gone unsolved for the past 21 years.

    • 24/7 is clearly overwhelmed with all the writing he does.

  24. How did that end up up there ? Seriously, I give up.

  25. Clint Robinson and Hunter Strickland DFA to make room for Inge and Sanchez on the 40

  26. I like a lot of things about this threaded software. Mainly that it (sorta) keeps the discussions together, which is great when there are multiple topics on the blog — like always.

But I’m still torn about whether it’s best when you’re reading late to comment on a thread that’s a couple hours old in that thread or just re-open the topic at the bottom.

  27. So if your keeping score at home… The off season acquisitions of your Pittsburgh Pirates

P Chad Beck from Toronto — WAIVED and claimed by Blue Jays
C Ramon Solis from SD — assigned to minor league camp
P Vin Mazzaro from KC — assigned to minor league camp
1B Clint Robinson from KC — designated for assignment
P Zach Thornton from Oak — Acquired for Resop — cannot find any mention of him
P Jeanmar Gomez from Cle — made club in the bullpen
P Zach Stewart from Bos — WAIVED and claimed by White Sox
P Stolmy Pimentel from Bos — assigned to minor league camp
OF Jerry Sands from Bos — assigned to minor league camp
IF Ivan Dejesus Jr from Bos — assigned to minor league camp
P Mark Melacon — made club in the bullpen

I would say it was another successful off season for NH. I’m really curious about Thornton who was acquired for Resop. I can’t find him anywhere. Maybe he just decided not to show up!

Looks like Brock Holt made the Red Sox opening day roster.

  28. Ok you guys been talking baseball all day, and no hockey thread tonight – so I am gonna throw this out here , just to go on the record.

Shero ain’t done! Despite DK thinking Iginla is not a fit (and I respect that opinion) I believe the guy is ALL IN this year. Snagging Iginla would make the Pens a scary deep team for the Cup run.
I am givein it 60/40 or even maybe 70/30 Shero makes a “real” run at him.
Prospects and draft picks- small cost for a Cup!
Sieze the Day Ray- go for it.
    Go pens!

Ya , and about 30 seconds after I post this there will be a twitter flash that Boston got him.LOL

  29. Well, A.J. just blew his chance of going out the way he wants.
Biertempfel reports that A.J. is “mulling” retirement after this season. He quotes him as then saying, “If I was to keep playing, I wouldn’t want it to be anywhere else but Pittsburgh.”
Funny, but players before — like Jack, Freddy, and Dirty Doug come to mind — had similarly embraced the team and community, expressing the same desire to finish in Pittsburgh. Unless A.J. calls it quits this year, Huntington will be sure to scuttle his wish too. Either by not offering him a one-year contract for 2014, or trading him by July.

  30. Or by 24/7, actually.

  31. All this posting back and forth with myself reminds me of Billy Idol’s “Dancing With Myself.”

  32. Travis Sawchik sounds like a fake name to me.

  33. DK: Anyone still around tonight?

  34. DK:

Just saw that Iginla was scratched from tonights game. Any word on whether the Pens are still in the hunt?

  35. And that’s that. The Heat streak ends at 27 wins in a row.

Groat can be proud that Dukies Luol Deng and Carlos Boozer literally played themselves into exhaustion to win this one. If these two meet in the playoffs, things may be a little chippy.

We all know what North American team currently now has the longest winning streak in sport.

  36. 12:30 AM and still no “Wakeup Call”

Dejan must still be watching ESPN’s coverage lamenting the loss by the Miami Heat!

  37. Pens just got Iginla from the Flames! Man, Shero really going all in.

Dejan prob typing furiously right now — hence no Wakeup Call yet.
