  1. Is this AJ’s first start against a Major League team in a month?

Hope he does well——I’d like to see him make the team.

    What??? Jeanmar??

  2. Drew71 says:

I’m all talked out about baseball.

Anything going on with the Pens?

  3. Jandy says:

Letang back on IR, Depres recalled

  4. Arriba Wilver says:

    Fire Bylsma.

  5. gregenstein says:

Wil Allen, formerly of the Steelers, signed with the Cowboys. Not good when our starting Strong Safety leaves. I say starting because we all know Polumalu only will play maybe 5 games.

  6. Drew71 says:

I am SO HAPPY that I get to continue to sing
    867-53o9 into the season.

Do you think he’ll make their playoff roster?

  7. John Lease says:

That ‘Pirates’ page links to Duquesne…

  8. Jandy says:

Twins first batter gets a single

  9. Jandy says:

Jeez, steals second, then third on catcher’s throwing error….my Little League team played better than that :/

  10. JohninOshkosh says:

Dee Gordon, late of Pirate infatuation, was sent to AAA. Former Bucco, Luis Cruz, will handle shortstop duties for the Dodgers in Hanley Ramirez’ stead.

  11. Arriba Wilver says:

    Our catcher sucks. ;-)

  12. Jandy says:

and we’re worried about pitching???? ;)

  13. Jandy says:

    Dang, bases loaded, one out

  14. Chuck H says:

Due to lack of hitting with men on base, sadly, the Bucs will lose a lot of games again this year. They have good pitchers who will hold the opposition close, but they need hitters.
Why they keep Sir Whiffs-alot (Alverez) in the lineup continues to amaze me. He really isn’t a very good 3rd baseman. Put somebody more reliable at 3rd. Another losing season for our Pirates.

  15. Jandy says:

    Dear Lord, Martin by pitch

  16. Jandy says:

    Errrr hit by pitch

  17. Drew71 says:

Cute. But it’s never gonna replace “plunk”

  18. Jandy says:

    well, I tried ;)

  19. Jandy says:

    OK how’s this one:
    AJ plunked Vargas

  20. TJ says:

So I can’t wait for next years NFL season to be over already. Based on the mass exodus of players via free agency the Steelers should find themselves with quite a few compensatory picks in next years draft. All of which will be traded by Ray Shero.

  21. TJ says:

Out of curiosity whatever happend to Jose Contreras? I know the Pirates signed him to a MLC. Is he still in minor league camp?

  22. TJ says:

    Bring back Barajas!!

  23. Jandy says:

    ha! Josh Harrison doubles.

  24. Milo Hamilton says:

On our previous discussion of Garrit Cole. One year of service time is 172 days. They need only leave him down for 2 weeks to keep him an extra year. Same situation the Rays had with Evan Longoria a few years back.

As Drew said yesterday, the 2nd time the 5th starter has to pitch will be April 16th at home against St. Louis. The only reason Cole doesn’t make that start will be financial, not related to service time.

  25. TJ says:

Lets change topics just for one minute… Anyone else been watching what has been going on in North Korea?

This kid is either going to have to back up all his talk or be shamed by his country. He’s talked a big game so far and made a lot of noise. If he backs down he will be the joke of his country and he hasn’t even been in power for a year.

Where are the drone strikes when you need one?

  26. Milo Hamilton says:

He’ll start on the DL. One on 4 pitchers starting the year on the DL.

  27. Jandy says:

Count on it being financially beneficial to Nutting.

  28. TJ says:

I find it amazing that you have Eva Longoria and Evan Longoria but not related. How is that even possible

  29. TJ says:

I didn’t realize being old was a valid reason to be put on the DL

  30. Milo Hamilton says:

And again I’ll add the disclaimer, unless things are going so swimmingly up here or he’s struggling badly down there.

  31. Milo Hamilton says:

I won’t take him seriously until he can shoot an 18 on 18 holes like his old man.

  32. TJ says:

How desperate are the Yankees…. They signed Lyle Overbay.

Hang in there Milo that baseball might still have some value

  33. TJ says:

    I think he shot a 35 on 36 holes

  34. Bizrow says:

Midseason form for the PBC sticks, two innings, 5 hits, ONE stinking run….

Just getting some practice, season starts Monday, gotta be ready to complain….

  35. Jandy says:

But Pedro ruined that for ya Biz, he went and hit one out :)

  36. Bizrow says:

Nah, you know me, I’ll complain about anything ;-)

AJ is out of the game? Everything allright with him?

  37. Bizrow says:

Buster Olney had a good write-up (ESPN Insider) about the Astro’s and the potential for them to “tank” this year. It made sense, the lower you end up in the standings, the more $$ you get to spend in both the Rule 4 Draft and in the international market.

Astros payroll has gone from 100 MM to 25 MM in three or four years, and of the 25 MM this year, 5 MM goes to the PBC for Wandy.

So, sounds like the Stros game plan is to lose, no incentive to win right now.

Well, thats how the Pens earned the right to draft Mario…

  38. NMR says:

You know what I think is the funniest part of this? Scott Boras just threw a public hissy fit because he said this is exactly what teams are doing, which in turn is leaving less money for his veteran clients.

During 2008 and 2009, Nats GM Mike Rizzo admittedly let his team tank using the same process as the Astros to ensure they would have the #1 overall pick. This was a move many people have said Boras advised. Both of those picks, of course, were Boras clients Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper.

  39. Milo Hamilton says:

So with Rushel Shell leaving Pitt, how juicy will it be if he follows Todd Graham to Arizona State ?

  40. Bizrow says:

And the Budmeister has gone on record saying what the Astros are doing is the right and logical thing to do.

    Go figure…

Also the guy that recommended our beloved Frankie to the PBC….

  41. 21sthebest says:

    That’s new under Obamacare.

  42. Jandy says:

    Woah! Cards 10 Nats 1

  43. 21sthebest says:

I don’t see what’s wrong with what the Astros are doing. There are cycles, things change. If you’re going to be bad, you might as well save up.

Note: I wasn’t in favor of trading Bay, Nady, McLouth, Freddy and his wife Jack.

  44. Milo Hamilton says:

    Vincent Tremblay.

  45. TJ says:

    Is that official Milo?

Can’t imagine why Shell would want to leave now. Maybe he changed his mind and wants to get away from baby’s momma. Since that was the whole reason he decided to go to Pitt right?

  46. TJ says:

Would have loved to have seen what the Pirates would have done had they had the #1 pick when Strasburg or Harper were available. Probably would have taken the second coming of Brian Bullington.

  47. Milo Hamilton says:

He’s having trouble with the coaching staff. Not reacting well to discipline I hear. It’s not 100% official yet, but he wants to sign the papers today.

  48. Bizrow says:

Not trying to win, I guess, was Buster’s argument about credibility.

That and the way the system is set up can encourage someone to tank it

  49. Brotherhood of the Redus says:

Low Blow Chuck – I think he heard you

  50. Bizrow says:

Thats a bummer for Pitt. And not a good sign for Shell as well. I live in Hopewell and know some guys that know how he operates, not a good thing (but I said that)

  51. 21sthebest says:

So is he not in favor of “rebuilding” at all? Is he against giving up at the trade deadline even when you’re clearly out of it?

  52. Ghost says:

Why are you trotting out that old slur about Jack and Freddy? They were close friends and a great double-team tandem. So what?

  53. Jandy says:

Russell Martin threw out Bernier trying to steal second. Things are looking up, boys! ;)

  54. Jandy says:

Not reacting well to discipline? Does one react “better” in a different state?

  55. TJ says:

Bernier? The goalie for the Kings? No wonder Martin threw him out

  56. 21sthebest says:

It was a joke. I really didn’t mean anything by it except that there was some thought that they were in cahoots as to staying or leaving.

  57. TJ says:

You do react better in the state of denial

  58. Pat4PGH says:

Good pitchers? Beyond AJ and Wandy? And they both could prove worse than last year…..

  59. 21sthebest says:

“He’s having trouble with the coaching staff. Not reacting well to discipline”

I can’t wait until that generation is running the country.

  60. Jandy says:

    precisely. Immature. Not good.

  61. Jandy says:

Hope I’m not around to endure it.

  62. TJ says:

The undisciplined and can’t get along with others generation?

You mean they aren’t already running the country?

  63. Jandy says:

    Play nice boys!

  64. 21sthebest says:

Actually I think we already are.

  65. Jandy says:

    Don’t burst my bubble!!!!!
    ::not listening::

  66. 21sthebest says:

    Yes mother.

  67. Ghost says:

And I don’t think Wilson or Freddy made any secret of wanting re-up together and stay in Pittsburgh. Wilson accepted his contract offer pretty easily. Sanchez was slightly lowballed by Huntington, but then Huntington pulled the offer anyway, only about a day later. The latter didn’t want to give Freddy the chance to think about it and actually accept. But things worked out for Freddy. He got his money and a ring too. Pirates fans got… who? Aki Iwamura? Can’t even remember anymore. It’s a blur until Walker got moved over.

  68. Ghost says:

Sorry. I always liked Jack and Freddy.

  69. 21sthebest says:

Me too. They were my favorite players when they were here.

  70. Bizrow says:

Not trying to speak for Buster, but he referenced Pete Rose for example and this action being similar to losing the credibility of the public by not trying to win for several years. I think the key thing is “trying” over the course of several years.

Next time I see Buster, I will ask him ;-)

  71. Bizrow says:

Barrabas couldn’t have thrown out the character that was Bernie in Weekend with Bernie

    Just sayin…

  72. 21sthebest says:

Wilson accepted his contract offer? I wouldn’t call what Sanchez was offered as slightly lowballed and the offers had deadlines.

  73. Milo Hamilton says:

With all the hammering on Jeanmar Gomez aside, how long does this stiff Chris Leroux keep getting a pass ?

  74. 21sthebest says:

They also changed owners last year.

  75. Bizrow says:

From Dejan’s latest tweets, sounds like we are getting a new reporter to help cover the PBC. Travis Sawchik

A new chew toy for the blog (just kidding, kinda)

Wonder what that does to Rob B’s gig?

  76. Milo Hamilton says:

How did that end up up there ? Seriously, I give up.

  77. TJ says:

A new reporter to help cover the PBC. Does the PBC really need a reporter to cover them in the first place?

We need 48 hours investigates to do an episode on the death of the PBC that has gone unsolved for the past 21 years.

  78. Bizrow says:

Sorry, don’t follow you Milo ??

  79. Bizrow says:

    And GMs

  80. TJ says:

I think Milo is having problems with his GPS

  81. 21sthebest says:

I hope that’s all it is. But if it lasts longer than 4 hours, I recommend that he call his doctor.

  82. Milo Hamilton says:

I just posted that Chris Leroux stinks & it ended up in the Rushel Shell discussion. Wonder where this one will go ?

  83. Milo Hamilton says:

If it lasts longer than 4 hours, I’m calling the Rockettes.

  84. 21sthebest says:

    Other way around Milo.

  85. Milo Hamilton says:

    In Leroux’s last 2 outings – 1.3 IP / 12 runs.

  86. 21sthebest says:

I still remember an old Tony Kornheiser line to the end of that commercial:

“Call your doctor? Call your girlfriend!”

  87. 21sthebest says:

I wasn’t implying that Leroux didn’t stink, I was saying that you posted the Leroux comment in an already existing discussion.

  88. NMR says:

As long as he isn’t getting hit around in games that actually, um, count?

  89. Arriba Wilver says:

    I listen to Ambassador Rodman.

  90. Milo Hamilton says:

All good, 21. Hope this one goes in the right place.

  91. Arriba Wilver says:

    Our catcher is great. Neal’s a genius. I bet Martin wasn’t Clint’s idea. ;-)

  92. JHadar says:

The problem is at shortstop, not 3rd base.

  93. Arriba Wilver says:

  94. 21sthebest says:

Martin has two throwing errors today.

  95. Arriba Wilver says:

What do you mean by “how he operates,” Biz?

  96. JHadar says:

    Tremendous bounce???

  97. Arriba Wilver says:

I’m just blowin’ in the wind on Martin today. “The answer my friends . . .”

  98. TJ says:

The Pirates are unintentionally tanking this year; they have a streak going and no one wants to end an impressive streak like they have going

  99. JAL says:

Clint Robinson and Hunter Strickland DFA to make room for Inge and Sanchez on the 40

  100. JHadar says:

I like a lot of things about this threaded software. Mainly that it (sorta) keeps the discussions together, which is great when there are multiple topics on the blog — like always.

But I’m still torn about whether it’s best when you’re reading late to comment on a thread that’s a couple hours old in that thread or just re-open the topic at the bottom.

  101. TJ says:

So if your keeping score at home… The off season acquisitions of your Pittsburgh Pirates

P Chad Beck from Toronto — WAIVED and claimed by Blue Jays
C Ramon Solis from SD — assigned to minor league camp
P Vin Mazzaro from KC — assigned to minor league camp
1B Clint Robinson from KC — designated for assignment
P Zach Thornton from Oak — Acquired for Resop — cannot find any mention of him
P Jeanmar Gomez from Cle — made club in the bullpen
P Zach Stewart from Bos — WAIVED and claimed by White Sox
P Stolmy Pimentel from Bos — assigned to minor league camp
OF Jerry Sands from Bos — assigned to minor league camp
IF Ivan Dejesus Jr from Bos — assigned to minor league camp
P Mark Melacon — made club in the bullpen

I would say it was another successful off season for NH. I’m really curious about Thornton who was acquired for Resop. I can’t find him anywhere. Maybe he just decided not to show up!

Looks like Brock Holt made the Red Sox opening day roster.

  102. NMR says:

I can never tell if you’re being sarcastic or not. I’m guessing yes, since you’re basing your opinion off two exhibition outings.

  103. Bizrow says:

    + 1

Know just what you mean, JH

  104. Bizrow says:

Didn’t we also pick up that Oliver fellow?

  105. TJ says:

Yeah if a new comment is added it would be great if it would move that topic to the bottom so your always reading the most recent responses

  106. TJ says:

Ahhh yes we did. Another quality P sent packing

  107. NMR says:

Thats exactly how those players should’ve been treated. Except for Jeanmar. Ugh.

  108. Bizrow says:

A bit surprised about Robinson, wasn’t he the second coming of the Legend?

  109. TJ says:

Totally agree NMR. They were brought in for competition right? LOL

  110. Bizrow says:

I heard a rumor, unconfirmed, that NH put 250 units on the UNDAH with Playoffs?

  111. Pat4PGH says:

So glad we have such a smart GM and clever, too!

Still trying to do what he was to do in Cleveland, stockpile the minor leagues! And 6 years later, he still is NOT getting it right….

Really cannot stand him or any of his minons …from a baseball perspective

  112. Drew71 says:

  113. JHadar says:

Was it that there were just no shortstops available?

  114. Drew71 says:

Thunder liked Wilson. So then therefore I did not.

  115. Drew71 says:

And if I had to read one more post from Dejan about how Wilson stuck around on fan appreciation day until midnight, I was gonna drink Drano.

(Yes, Thunder, if only you had known that’s all it would have taken.)

  116. Bizrow says:

And late cuts, per NH, were due in part to the competition?

  117. Drew71 says:

    I like Stormy Pimento.

    I don’t know why. I just do.

  118. NMR says:

I wouldn’t even go that far, TJ.

Mazarro, Gomez, and Melancon were the only ones with a chance from the start.

The rest either had options or a veteranny veteran “blocking” them.

  119. Bizrow says:

    Its the name?

Personally I look forward to the day Wehner tries to pronounce it

  120. John Lease says:

I guess Clint wasn’t all that. Hunter Strickland? Never heard of him!

  121. John Lease says:

24/7 is clearly overwhelmed with all the writing he does.

  122. JAL says:

Thornton likely to be with Altoona. You haven’t heard much because he was not in MLB camp.

  123. Pucknutz says:

Ok you guys been talking baseball all day, and no hockey thread tonight – so I am gonna throw this out here , just to go on the record.

Shero ain’t done! Despite DK thinking Iginla is not a fit (and I respect that opinion) I believe the guy is ALL IN this year. Snagging Iginla would make the Pens a scary deep team for the Cup run.
I am givein it 60/40 or even maybe 70/30 Shero makes a “real” run at him.
Prospects and draft picks- small cost for a Cup!
Sieze the Day Ray- go for it.
    Go pens!

Ya , and about 30 seconds after I post this there will be a twitter flash that Boston got him.LOL

  124. Thundercrack says:

I was not a fan of Wilson’s during the last couple of years he was hear.

I should have brought Drano with me last Friday to the ST game. But I could only hide so many flasks.

  125. Ghost says:

Well, A.J. just blew his chance of going out the way he wants.
Biertempfel reports that A.J. is “mulling” retirement after this season. He quotes him as then saying, “If I was to keep playing, I wouldn’t want it to be anywhere else but Pittsburgh.”
Funny, but players before — like Jack, Freddy, and Dirty Doug come to mind — had similarly embraced the team and community, expressing the same desire to finish in Pittsburgh. Unless A.J. calls it quits this year, Huntington will be sure to scuttle his wish too. Either by not offering him a one-year contract for 2014, or trading him by July.

  126. Ghost says:

I see that A.J.’s ruminations were tweeted by DK hours ago.

  127. Ghost says:

    Or by 24/7, actually.

  128. Ghost says:

Can somebody tell me why we call Rob Biertempfel 24/7?

  129. Ghost says:

All this posting back and forth with myself reminds me of Billy Idol’s “Dancing With Myself.”

  130. Pucknutz says:

Ok Ghost I will dance w/ya – not a slow dance – don’t know ya well enough! lol
    Lets go w/ Fire Nutting!
    And I don’t have a clue about the 24/7.

  131. JohninOshkosh says:

Last year he responded to someone on HIS blog that was accusing him of shirking his reporting duties that, unlike others (read Dejan) he did not devote 24/7 a day to his job. Or something like that. The 24/7 reference stuck, I believe from a Milo post. It should be noted that most here like his workand the 24/7 nickname is used in good humor.

  132. 21sthebest says:

Cause he works 24 hours a month, 7 months a year.

  133. 21sthebest says:

You have me confused with someone else.

  134. Drew71 says:

Are you sure he’s still Jarome Iginla?

Or did he just used to be?

  135. Thundercrack says:

  136. JohninOshkosh says:

Travis Sawchik sounds like a fake name to me.

  137. DK: Anyone still around tonight?

  138. JohninOshkosh says:

You’re not engrossed with the Heat/Bulls game?

  139. Drew71 says:

    Rust Never Sleeps

  140. JohninOshkosh says:

Is Lawless crashing at your pad while in town? Have you rented Argo yet?

    That’s all I got.

  141. GSmomx2 says:

I am here … Looking for any and all Iginla/Sens-crazy-owner discussion. Do people really take this Matt Cooke conspiracy theory seriously? This is an actual question I have.

  142. TJ says:

Just saw that Iginla was scratched from tonights game. Any word on whether the Pens are still in the hunt?

  143. Jason81 says:

Just Melnyk and the voices in his head.

  144. TJ says:

As I say that I read that it looks like Iginla is going to the Bruins for a #1, and 2 prospects

  145. Ghost says:

Thank you, Pucknutz. You we’re Born to Boogie.

  146. Ghost says:

    Duly noted, gentlemen.

  147. Drew71 says:

    I guess we weren’t the right anyone’s

  148. JohninOshkosh says:

And that’s that. The Heat streak ends at 27 wins in a row.

Groat can be proud that Dukies Luol Deng and Carlos Boozer literally played themselves into exhaustion to win this one. If these two meet in the playoffs, things may be a little chippy.

We all know what North American team currently now has the longest winning streak in sport.

  149. GSmomx2 says:

    I guess so!

  150. GSmomx2 says:

That’s what I would think. Why do they keep putting him on the radio?

  151. JohninOshkosh says:

Don’t put it on me, Build a Bear. If the Jets win, I’m guessing the mounting Pens injuries will have something to do it.

  152. It was a great win for the Bulls and my 2 Dukies, Boozer and Deng, defeating 1 Dukie, Shane Battier.

I’m so glad that streak is over. It was a really good game though.

  153. 12:30 AM and still no “Wakeup Call”

Dejan must still be watching ESPN’s coverage lamenting the loss by the Miami Heat!

  154. Ed says:

Pens just got Iginla from the Flames! Man, Shero really going all in.

Dejan prob typing furiously right now — hence no Wakeup Call yet.
