  2. JRay3 says:

Will the 5th different lineup of the year snap the Pirates out of its offensive funk. El Toro to the 6 spot versus the leftie, Tabby the start in RF but not in the leadoff hole as Marte remains atop the lineup.

Here’s hoping there is an AJ Burnett in store for us tonight.

  3. T.S. says:

No Jones for the second game in a row. Why?

  4. Bizrow says:

    Lefty tonight

  5. JRay3 says:

Perfectly understandable for him to sit versus a tough left hander. Jones hit .189 with a .297 SLG last year in his 74 AB’s versus LHP a year ago and it was worse in 2011 so I would not expect to see him in lineup on days a LH is starting.

  6. T.S. says:

Like Sanchez is a better choice? Lame.

  7. JohninOshkosh says:

    PANIC

Panic on the streets of Pittsburgh
Panic on the streets of Monroeville
    I wonder to myself…

Could the Pirates ever win again
On the field green grass, wins slip down
    I wonder to myself…

Hopes may rise in the winter,
But, honey pie, but the wins just won’t be there
so you run down to safety of Center Street
But there is panic in the streets of Oshkosh, Duncansville, even Florida
    I wonder to myself…

    (Dejan with the bridge)

    Tear down the PBC!
    Fire the blessed GM!

Because the baseball that they constantly play
It says nothing to me about a title
    Fire the blessed GM!
Because the baseball that they constantly play…

On the field green grass wins slip away
    and Pittsburgh town cries loud

Fire the GM! Fire the GM! Fire the Gm! Fire the GM!
Fire the GM! Fire the GM! Fire the Gm! Fire the GM! Fire the GM!

    Fire the GM! etc. etc.

(apologies to Marr/Morrissey and Drew who does this much better)

    100 on the UNDAH

    Thanks, Playoffs

  12. Dcpinpgh says:

100 on the under if you please

  13. JRay3 says:

Well good afternoon to the window and I see an interesting line is played before us tonight. So time to take a look at the numbers.

Going for the Dodgers is Kershaw the owner of 981 career K’s in 953 innings of work better than a K an inning rate. In his first game of the season he fanned 7 Giants in a complete game shutout. In his one start versus the Bucs last year he struck out 7 Buccos in 7 IP in a 9-3 rout.

For the Bucs they are the owners of 10, 7, 8, and 10 strikeouts in their first four games. Alarmingly K’ing 10 times in two of their first four out the gate. The only good number I can derive is the fact that the Bucs averaged 8.35 K’s a game which was second most in the NL a year ago, so 9.5 is an aggressive number.

So I will tread lightly here and play 50 on the UNDER and just keep my fingers crossed.

    Thanks and Go Bucs!

  14. BillyBaduka says:

No apologies necessary, that’s good stuff!

  15. BillyBaduka says:

i was a huge The Smiths fan as a teen.

Can’t stomach Morrissey any more but Marr is a fantastic guitarist.

  16. Reading says:

I think Jones played first base last night.

  17. ALWAYS love the analysis!!

    YOU GOT IT!!

  18. JMB says:

    100 on the UNDER

    Thanks!

  19. Joey Mellons says:

    45/under. Tough line.

  20. Pucknutz says:

    100 on the over

  21. OZ says:

    100 on the over please.

  22. JohninOshkosh says:

Thanks! I was really bored at work!

  23. JohninOshkosh says:

    25/Under, my good man.

  24. Eric Bowser says:

This is my first wager ever…..

put 100 big ones on the over!

100 million dollars on the OVER

  25. JohninOshkosh says:

Tonight, the Brewers are starting a rookie in left (Khris Davis) with Betancourt starting for the first time ever at first and the same with Alex Gonzalez at third.

    Braun and Ramirez are hurt.

The Buccos are a better team. They are better than the Cubs and Brewers. They need to start playing to their potential.

  26. DemonDachshund says:

    100 on the OVER please.

  27. Eric Bowser says:

Small sample size John, no problem in Pittsburgh. (sarcasm).

  28. Eric Bowser says:

    Pirates offense
    2012 through four games: 2-2, 8 runs, 1 shutout, 1 HR
    2013 through four games: 1-3, 6 runs, 2 shutouts, 0 HR

  29. cmat0829 says:

100 ‘eberts’ on the under. RIP Roger.

  30. Bill Born says:

I think the odds of us winning tonight are greater than the odds we get no-hit.

  31. Drew71 says:

John, I’m holding a lighter up, swaying from side to side, smoking a poodle doobie

  32. JohninOshkosh says:

    Wichita State was legit.

Nice run but ultimately not in Louisville’s class.

  33. JohninOshkosh says:

    Nice!

  34. Drew71 says:

I love the stars that get one name treatment.

    Frank

    Sammy

    Dino

    We know who they are.

    And now…

    Burnett

  35. Eric Bowser says:

Yes, Carol was a funny actress in her time.

  36. Drew71 says:

I think the Shockers were in the class. Only one student could get an A in that class, but the Shockers scored a very close B+.

  37. Jason81 says:

I’ll go with 100 on the OVER tonight!

  38. Eric Bowser says:

I’ll just go rob a bank…. oh, I probably shouldn’t say that considering my day job.

  39. Drew71 says:

Holy Crap, that was pretty funny, Eric.

    (Not to sound so surprised)

  40. Drew71 says:

So THAT’S where Ben ended up.

  41. Eric Bowser says:

Something about a blind squirrel and a nut is ringing in my ears.

  42. Stuart says:

    Playoffs,

75 colored beads on the under.

    Stuart

  43. tcb says:

    50 on the over.

  44. The Window is truly honored by your visit.

    YOU GOT IT!!!

  45. Eric Bowser says:

First pitch swinging for Marte and single to CF… let’s get it started!

  46. Eric Bowser says:

geez, first pitch to Walker, bunt down 3B line to advance Marte to 2B, 1 out.

  47. Dave G says:

    and there goes your no-hitter…

  48. The Window is officially closed for this evening.
Thanks again to all who played.
    GO BUCS!

  49. Eric Bowser says:

Hard hit to SS by McCutchen… Marte is thrown out at 3B…. ARGH!

  50. Eric Bowser says:

Really glad to see the Pirates holding back Marte last year was to make sure he knew how to run the bases…. OR NOT.

  51. Thundercrack says:

Which coach do we blame for Marte’s base running blunder?
    Or do we blame Clint?

    Bylsma!!!

  52. Eric Bowser says:

after a few tosses to 1B to hold McCutchen, Gabby Flabby flies out to RF.

  53. Eric Bowser says:

    I blame Kyle Stark

  54. Thundercrack says:

Well he obviously hasn’t learned enough on the major league roster

I’m so happy he did so well in winter ball

  55. Dave G says:

Marte would have been stranded on third anyway.

  56. Eric Bowser says:

    remind me.

Wasn’t Marte forced to sit out by Pirates?

  57. Dave G says:

Or maybe even on second base, had he not tried to advance

  58. Eric Bowser says:

Kershaw throws 6 pitches in first inning

…Burnett throws 5 to leadoff hitter Carl Crawford

  59. Dave G says:

Russell Martin watches Crawford steal second.

  60. Eric Bowser says:

Burnett just doesn’t care to hold runners, alter his mechanics/stretch…

Pirates can’t continue to give away bases

  61. Dave G says:

    Vin Scully:

Honus Wagner made $138K over his entire 21-year career
Honus Wagner baseball card sold today for $2.1 MILLION dollars

  62. Eric Bowser says:

    Big strikeout against Kemp…

  63. JRay3 says:

Burnett touching 96 on the gun with great bite on his off speed offerings, arm looks alive tonight. Filthy pitch gets Kemp swinging.

  64. JRay3 says:

And than AJ makes Gonzalez look silly to K the side…have to like his power arm!

  65. Eric Bowser says:

    PItches after 1st inning
    Kershaw – 6 (1 hit)
    Burnett – 20 (3 SO + 1 BB)

  66. theplanisworking says:

    ……..and Vin didnt buy it?

  67. JohninOshkosh says:

    Good story, RF.

The Brewers really wanted to move him to first given who they have playing left field. But I don’t think the kid could play the position. Front office types at Miller Park like his potential, though.

  68. Eric Bowser says:

    curve is working tonight

  69. Eric Bowser says:

take the positive… Russell Martin saw 6 pitches

  70. theplanisworking says:

Kdro has that “strike 3″ look down pat………

  71. Eric Bowser says:

Pedro is no match against a lefty like Kershaw… where’s Casey McGehee?

    LOL

  72. Reading says:

Somewhat ironic to describe Pedro’s majestic batting practice home run over the roof of Dodger Stadium, and then cut back to Pedro getting rung up

  73. Eric Bowser says:

Kershaw throws 6 pitches in 1st, 6 to Martin, then 9 pitches to strike out Alvarez & Tabata

  74. Daquido_Bazzini says:

11 innings in LA….And still waiting for a run.

  75. theplanisworking says:

    zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  76. Eric Bowser says:

    pitches after 2 innings
    Kershaw – 21
    Burnett – 38

  77. Reading says:

Pirates need to trash the black softball shirts like the Penguins just did with their blue sweaters.

  78. Good night for Taillon tonight. 5 innings, no runs, 4 hits, 1 walk 4 K’s and got the win.

McPherson not so much. 3 innings, 3 runs, 4 hits 2 walks, 1 K. Pitching against the immortal Dice-K.

  79. Daquido_Bazzini says:

12 innings in LA…..And still waiting for a run.

  80. theplanisworking says:

    over/under on when the Bucs get a run……………… 17.5

  81. JRay3 says:

Looking forward to the day we throw Cole and Tallion out there wvery five days…good update.

  82. JRay3 says:

Soft liner for a hit, quick SB due to the continued inability to hold and throw out runners and than a roller through left side of infield and down a run which maybe an insurmountable lead.

  83. For sure. Gotta look forward to something. Good Lord.

  84. Thundercrack says:

Walk lives Marte. That throw to the plate was not close at all. And it bounced.

  85. Dave G says:

Waiting for someone to say that 5 games is a small sample size to judge this team.

OK… how about 20 years then???

  86. Eric Bowser says:

    pitches through 3 innings

    Kershaw: 6 – 15 – 13 (34)
    Burnett: 20 – 18 – 23 (61)

  87. Eric Bowser says:

Yeah, it wasn’t a good throw for someone that has a cannon for an arm.

  88. Patrick(RI) says:

These guys may not be thinking about 2012, but they sure are playing like it. Upgrade at catcher or not.

  89. Eric Bowser says:

I expect some to say give them 2 months

    2012
    Month Games Runs per game
    April 22 58 2.64
    May 28 89 3.18
    June 27 146 5.41
    July 26 130 5.00
    August 28 121 4.32
    September 28 100 3.57

  90. Bryan Morris closes out Indy’s first win.

Vin Mazzaro actually threw better than McP tonight. 4 innings, no runs, 2 hits, no walks, 6 K’s and got the win.

I find myself looking at the minors just like last season. Strange with all the talent at the ML level.

  91. theplanisworking says:

I expect some to say give them forever……….

  92. PLayoffs, sorry about yesterday. I was eating when I did the post, and thought I had put down amounts. Oh well, at least I didn’t lose out on the other two lines.

  93. JRay3 says:

Good grief both Cutch and Sanchez swing at Ball 4 difference between two men on and giving outs to the opposition…someone needs to wake this team up.

  94. Eric Bowser says:

    pitches per inning
    Kershaw 06 – 15 – 13 – 12 (50)
    Burnett 20 – 18 – 23 – xx (61)

  95. Another day, another first run scored by the opposition. So far on this early season, when that happens, the Bucs lose, and usually by only giving up 3 runs total in each of the three games. The Bucs need to look at the only win – they scored first and didn’t give up any runs. With Kershaw getting the benefit of the home plate umps calls most of the night so far, this is going to be tough as usual. At SOME point, this team has got to start hitting good to great pitchers. Can’t keep just tipping your hat to the other guy. Just get PO’d and knock the darn hat off the guys head with a liner up the middle.

  96. Patrick(RI) says:

Behind the “heart” of the pirate batting order, 3-1 on Cutch and that guy who was our spring muscle — not even a good foul ball — 2 strikeouts. Ugly.

  97. Jandy says:

Hey I feel honored! Duncansville mentioned :)

  98. Reading says:

    Bring back Lacey.

  99. Eric Bowser says:

    That was unwatchable…

  100. Last inning Walkie was talking about how they may have changed up some sign to keep a guy on first from seeing if they are throwing a curve. well, they may have done that, but when you move your entire body to block what you are doing, that just as much gives the runner an idea that you are doing something. Try something new, and move your body to block the sign, but then throw a fastball, or pickoff move.

  101. Jandy says:

OshKosh, your PANIC at the top is awesome!

  102. Reading says:

I think last year’s collapse can be directly linked to the Lacey being gone, and that PNC Park sign behind home plate mysteriously appearing after a road trip.

  103. Another one hit night so far. I blame this on that very long and slow spring training. Seemed as though most of the starters almost sleepwalked through spring training because of the World Baseball Classic.

  104. Eric Bowser says:

This game is doing my health no good.

I’ve eaten half bag of potato chips and peanut butter cup. I’m ready for more watching this thing they call an offense.

  105. theplanisworking says:

and here I thought I was cool with the kids today by thinking of Panic……… at the Disco!!
(a music group the kids like…….)

  106. Reading says:

Martin and Bluto have the same GPA: .000.

  107. What are you doing up this late?

  108. JRay3 says:

From Vin Scully – the pirates have had 14 three ball counts this series and are 1-13 with one walk…that is just not getting it done.

  109. Drew71 says:

Burnett bears down and gets out of a tough spot. Only one run.

    It’s a shame that it’s a run too many.

  110. Eric Bowser says:

6 K’s for Kershaw through 4.2 – I’m feeling quite confident of winning those 100 points.

  111. Reading says:

Over/Under for hits should have been 1.5.

  112. Dave G says:

Are those LIPS tattoed on Tabata’s neck?

  113. Eric Bowser says:

    hahahahaha

    7 K’s through 5 innings by Kershaw

  114. Eric Bowser says:

So frustrating being a fan of this team.

  115. Patrick(RI) says:

I can hear the post game chat, all about how Burnett pitched well, but was out dueled by Kershaw. Not true when you consider Kershaw only had to pitch against Pirates, while AJ faced major leaguers.

  116. Drew71 says:

Did that half inning just take 46 seconds?

  117. theplanisworking says:

    +1

  118. Eric Bowser says:

    pitches per inning
    Kershaw 06 – 15 – 13 – 12 – 12 (62)
    Burnett 20 – 18 – 23 – 13 – xx (74)

  119. Jandy says:

Good question SPunky, hubby busted my butt today, I cleaned out the inside of his truck AND my car. Detailed like there’s no tomorrow…my hands hurt lol

  120. JRay3 says:

    .176, .133, .287, .083, .000, .118, .000, .200…that my friends is your Pirate lineup tonight in batting average.

  121. Dave G says:

Thru 4.5, the Bucs’ team batting average has fallen to .120

  122. Jandy says:

I saw Panic at the Disco on VH1

  123. Dave G says:

    Cutch is at .267 now

  124. Reading says:

Or half of a Dodger Dog.

  125. Jandy says:

    YIKES!

  126. Reading says:

Hitless Wonders. On track for 1-161 season.

  127. T.S. says:

My brother suggested that Cutch is only going to put up with this for so long. Predicts he tells agent to get him traded within next few years. I don’t doubt it. Nutting wants to hold on to this team forever. And Selig is too much of a jack arse to ever step in and suggest Nutting sells. My taste for this team is being tried more than it’s ever been. I realize it’s early in the season, but I just don’t see good things happening. Apologies for the rant.

  128. Drew71 says:

Last thing I’m worried about is if kershaw at 0 runs and 60ish pitches looks a bit better than Burnett at 1 run and 70ish pitches.

All that is secondary to their offense, or lack thereof

  129. Reading says:

    Everybody Clap your Hands!

  130. theplanisworking says:

This reminds us that Pirate fans go for the ballpark, food, and county-fair type atmosphere. In other words, a nice night out.

Other teams fans go for the baseball.

And our announcers had the nerve to say that the Dodgers need to draw better.
For cripes sakes, they are playing the Pirates. I wouldnt want to come out to see them either !!!! :(

  131. Reading says:

When Kershaw steals second standing up, it’s time for basketball.

  132. Eric Bowser says:

Oh that’s why I’m highlighting the pitching performance…

Kershaw is facing the equivalent of a AA team while Burnett is facing real live major league hitters. The hitting approach is vastly different in this game.

  133. Eric Bowser says:

ahhh, to be young again… though not sure I want to relive the night I first heard this song and woke up with a lump on my head… yes, I met the porcelain god.

  134. Dave G says:

    AJ’s probably done. 8 STFD’s tonight.

  135. Eric Bowser says:

I suspect at some point, when the team isn’t in a position to take advantage of Cutch’s prime years, they’ll trade him for prospects. I’m thinking in 2 years it could happen if things don’t turn around.

  136. As I mentioned to another Pirates fan at work the other day, my hope is that the Bucs do the opposite of the past two years, this year and suck in the beginning, then just go on a torrid run at the end of the season and somehow come out over .500. The only real way that can happen is if they just don’t dig themselves such a huge hole that they can’t come out of it.

  137. Drew71 says:

    Then that raises a Q.

I wonder what Burnett’s line would be if he threw against the Pirates?

Probably only have to wait until just after the trade deadline to find out.

  138. JRay3 says:

Great effort AJ is providing again tonight, just so sad that is 1-0 and it already feels like its a blowout.

  139. Reading says:

We really need somebody to go yard right now.

  140. Eric Bowser says:

    9 K’s by Pirates….. wooohoooo easy $ tonight, lol.

  141. Dave G says:

    AJ stays in!

  142. Drew71 says:

After following the travails of Burnett for almost two games, it makes me wonder if a pitcher who is 0-14 but with a 1.68 ERA might make the All Star game.

SOMEone from the team has to go.

  143. Reading says:

Let dude hit. Enough drag fakes.

  144. theplanisworking says:

I was going to bet the over tonight, but I got to the game after it started……….. didnt want to cheat.

I knew the Bucs couldnt hit, but this is going way too far !!!

  145. T.S. says:

And if NH is still here, it will be a token prospects fleecing like the Aramis Ramirez debacle.

  146. Drew71 says:

Maybe if the injured pitchers all come back, the trainer can go

  147. Joey Mellons says:

If I had swings like the buccos I keep them on the porch.

  148. Drew71 says:

    Oh. You’ve met my wife.

  149. Reading says:

    A lovely lady.

  150. Reading says:

Another 25 yards and that ball was gone.

  151. Has anybody on this team heard of Wheaties? Seems like they may need to have some.

  152. Reading says:

    Infield arc power.

  153. Eric Bowser says:

I’m hoping Huntington is fired before next season.

  154. Dave G says:

Scully just said Burnett is pitching the better game, when considering the opposing line-ups

  155. Eric Bowser says:

Old man still has it then…

  156. Dave G says:

    Great game for AJ.

So sorry that he has this bag of marshmallows backing him up offensively.

  157. Eric Bowser says:

The above post was full of sarcasm…..

  158. Eric Bowser says:

    Jared Hughes…….

  159. Dave G says:

The bandwagoners are the ones who AREN’T here when they are losing.

  160. JohninOshkosh says:

Burnett the best pitcher in a Pirate uniform since Drabek?

  161. Eric Bowser says:

I’m so tired of hearing people say I’m a bandwagon fan because I dislike the state of the franchise.

  162. theplanisworking says:

    +1

  163. theplanisworking says:

    +2

  164. JD says:

    Nicely done, Dude!

  165. Eric Bowser says:

Yeah, not much competition other than maybe Denny Neagle.

  166. Eric Bowser says:

No idea how Hughes survived that inning not giving up a run… lucky it was bottom of the order for LA.

  167. Dave G says:

Great defense by Martin on a few of those pitches by Hughes.

  168. theplanisworking says:

The way the Pirates are playing, there wont be a bandwagon to jump on to.

I am also sick of my fanhood being questioned.

This is a favorite trick of the FO supporters (notice i didnt say Pirate fans. Pirates fans wouldnt question other peoples fanhood)………….. just because we dont blindly follow the ineptitude of this FO, we have our fanhood questioned.

  169. Drew71 says:

Dude, did you just Like your Like?

  170. Eric Bowser says:

    What is outlandish RF?

Come on… your fanatical support of this team is no more valuable as a rah-rah positive cheerleader than it is of my or others Twisted Sisters “we’re not gonna take it” echoes of doom and gloom.

  171. Drew71 says:

Sure. Then let’s all read the box scores from the last two Septembers

  172. theplanisworking says:

    No.
The first like was for Dave.
The second like was for Eric.

  173. Drew71 says:

    Then call the EMTs too.

    They’re collapsing earlier this year.

  174. Eric Bowser says:

I don’t think Pittsburgh rescue teams have to worry about that one, no one cares that much about the Pirates losing some games in April.

  175. BillyBaduka says:

    + infinity

  176. Drew71 says:

You should have said, Yeah. What of it?

Do I have to teach you guys everything?

  177. Eric Bowser says:

You do realize it is pretty easy to find things to complain about?

20 years… most likely going to 21 and for second consecutive year, this team is historically inept in April.

  178. Reading says:

Now would be an opportune time for Pedro to turn us 45+ year Pirate fans into “bandwagoners.”

  179. theplanisworking says:

Hey troublemaker, give me something positive to cheer for the team about, and I will say positive things.

I have seen you espouse the sunshine and roses aspect for them, evn when they are putrid.

And you are the one who started stuff with me the other day. If you dont like my posts, skip over them, please. No need to constantly attack and argue.

Oh, and by the way…………… I didnt say you werent a fan because you are a FO apologist, I said you question other peoples fanhood.

    Good day.

  180. Drew71 says:

    Seriously Roberto.

If the Pirates DON’T come back and have a winning season, are you calling them out?

  181. Eric Bowser says:

my left ankle is pretty sore, I don’t think I can afford to jump from a bridge

  182. Jandy says:

    what he said!

  183. Jandy says:

    Drew is ALWAYS FIrST!

  184. BillyBaduka says:

You wouldn’t be so tired of it if they would field a competitive team every 20 years or so.

    It’s reasonable to expect failure.

How long do you think it takes seeing the same result before we should expect it, 25 years, 30, 40?

  185. Eric Bowser says:

I can’t wait to watch Cole, Taillon, and Heredia pitch and get no run support.

  186. Dave G says:

Another pick-off. But, hey, wasn’t that a great lead?

  187. JRay3 says:

And there is another base running gaffe as Martin is sleeping on first base but to be fair he hasn’t seen much of first base this year… so frustrating

  188. BillyBaduka says:

    Like!

  189. Jandy says:

So he still hasn’t figured out what it is he’s missing.

  190. JohninOshkosh says:

    Just for you, dear.

  191. JRay3 says:

You don’t have faith in our A ball phenoms Hanson, Bell and Polanco?

  192. JohninOshkosh says:

Thanks, man. Always good to “see” ya.

  193. Reading says:

I’m thinking second and third base could be removed when the Pirates bat.

  194. Drew71 says:

Thanks for the like. To be honest, it was a serious Q, not meant as a gotcha to Roberto.

  195. TJ says:

    Lets think positive here…

If AJ and Wandy can pitch the way they have been pitching they should bring us a nice package of 26 year old AAAA prospects at the deadline.

  196. BillyBaduka says:

Hope springs eternal for some I guess.

The only way I can figure some’s optimism. It must reset every year. Me and my cursed memory.

  197. OZ says:

Not a chance he does that…

  198. Drew71 says:

Nothing I’d like more than to bandwagon jump on a comeback victory tonight.

  199. theplanisworking says:

    +3 ;)

  200. BillyBaduka says:

We may even get some major league bats,. Then of ourselves we will lack pitching. The cycle continues…

  201. BillyBaduka says:

Damn typos. ‘Then of course we will lack pitching’.

  202. Drew71 says:

Seriously. I appreciate the response. And if you ask me, pretty gutsy considering your other opinions.

  203. TJ says:

so a .000 average and a pick off at 1B.

When is Mckenry do to get a shot?

Any chance that pro we got from Arizona gets a shot in the field?

Whats scary is a guy like Sands couldn’t make it past the first round of cuts.

I’m so glad they brought in all that competition in the off season; imagine where we’d be if these guys didn’t have to fight to suck.

  204. Eric Bowser says:

Does it have to be 16 games at All-Star break?

What about the end of the season?

  205. theplanisworking says:

Eric, thank you for the backup.

Shame Roberto cant address me without arguing and attacks. He has done it regularly to me, and I dont tolerate it. Most people on this blog are nice (notice I didnt say normal)………… but there is always one who cant play in the sandbox too well.

    Such is life………..

  206. Reading says:

Final Four game coming down to final possession.

  207. JRay3 says:

Nice work by the Bucco pen as first Hughes and now Melancon wiggle out of jams. Can the lineup make that important by getting to Dodger pen now.

  208. Eric Bowser says:

Nope but I’m hoping they do!

  209. BillyBaduka says:

This is the only team whose bandwagon is actually a horse drawn wagon.

  210. TJ says:

You mean actual bats or players that can hit?

I can see us getting a couple orders of louisville sluggers in a deal.

  211. Reading says:

    Bye bye, Boeheim.

  212. TJ says:

Would have been nice to see an all Big East final but I think Michigan might be a better opponent for Louisville considering they haven’t played 3x this year.

  213. Eric Bowser says:

Dodgers are pretty bad themselves but have to hand it to Hughes and Melancon to get out of the jams.

  214. Jandy says:

    quit giving me competition :P

  215. theplanisworking says:

I would bandwagon jump if I knew the following………….

    How high is the bandwagon?
    How fast is it moving?
How many people are on it?
    Does it have padded seats?
    Is it covered?
    Do they serve refreshments?
    Is there HDTV?
    Is there purified air?

    Important questions, all. ;)

  216. Reading says:

    We need a “Slump Monkey.”

  217. Eric Bowser says:

Congratulations to those who ‘bet’ on the over

    Pirates have 10 K’s

  218. TJ says:

Anyone see the latest issue of SI?

Interesting quote from John Thompson; he said if I were a coach today I would stay at a mid major or middle tier school. He said there you are appreciated. He used the firing of Ben Howland as an example of why coaches are staying put. Sound like anyone we know at Pitt?

  219. BillyBaduka says:

    Lol

  220. theplanisworking says:

    Hahahahahahahahaha!!!

  221. TJ says:

    Question for everyone…

After watching Wichita State almost make the championship game I have to ask. Do they have superior talent than the Panthers?

Yes I know they beat the Panthers but was it strictly talent? If so how is Wichita State able to recruit better talent than Pitt; if not why does Dixon keep getting rewarded?

  222. Skip says:

That pick-off move by Kershaw is a balk. The rule book states: “…it is a balk when…the pitcher, while touching his plate” (rubber) “fails to step directly toward a base before throwing to that base.” Section 8.05(c)

The angle of his step was well beyond 45 degrees.

Not that it matters, of course, since the Pirates can’t hit…

  223. TJ says:

We have 8 of them in the lineup tonight

  224. BillyBaduka says:

    Well said.

  225. Eric Bowser says:

hahahahahaha….. good question. I wonder the same myself.

  226. Reading says:

It would have been interesting to see Wich. St. get to the Final game, but Mich.-Louisville is a quality matchup.

  227. JohninOshkosh says:

You just won a 100 million dollars, Bowser. Breakfast at IHOP is on you.

  228. TJ says:

Going into the top of the 8th the Dodgers have more stolen bases than the Pirates have hits. 3-2 Dodgers.

  229. TJ says:

What are the odds Daniel Mccutchen was doing roids with the Pirates?

If he was; just imagine how awful he would have been without them

  230. theplanisworking says:

It may not be overall talent, but Pitt does not have that “go-to guy” that you need in the NCAA’s.

As for Dixon being rewarded for underachieving, I guess we have to trust Pederson on that one.

  231. TJ says:

    I didn’t see a go-to guy on Wichita State; I saw a team.

  232. TJ says:

There were 6 penguins that had more hits in last nights game than the Pirates do as a team tonight

  233. Reading says:

Wait a minute! You mean a batted ball can carry all the way to the outfield AND the wall!

  234. Roberto’s making more friends tonight, eh?

  235. Reading says:

I hope the Pirates clubhouse is stocked with Ketel One Vodka.

  236. All good my friend. Sometimes it works out for the best.
Kinda like getting a second chance, ya know?

  237. Eric Bowser says:

I think there’s a very real possibility the Pirates could be WAY WAY under .500 by the end of this month.

    I’m thinking 7-21…

  238. Eric Bowser says:

I’m ready to drink vodka to kill these memories tonight.

  239. Reading says:

The ump took one for the team there.

  240. Drew71 says:

I agree. If replacements are sought, there shouldn’t be on the job training. At least not for ALL of them together as the last time.

  241. Reading says:

    They’ve been sponsoring this inning.

  242. JohninOshkosh says:

    Elementary, my dear Watson.

Now for a ninth inning come from behind “W”…

  243. theplanisworking says:

    They should sponsor the season……..

  244. Eric Bowser says:

Yeah, saw the signage… almost as distracting as the sign at PNC Park (aka Pirates Charities).

  245. Eric Bowser says:

Time for something good… it is after midnight here…

  246. Reading says:

LET’S GO BUCS!!!! LET’S GO BUCS!!!! EVERYBODY HITS!!!! PITCHER, PITCHER, NOT A BELLY ITCHER!!!

  247. Eric Bowser says:

    need a few lined together

  248. This is easily Jay Bell’s fault….
    Too soon?

  249. JRay3 says:

17 straight innings without a single run in this series…weak fly out from Snider down to Marte and Walker staring at 8th consecutive loss at Dodger stadium.

  250. Eric Bowser says:

All about talent… or lack there of at this point.

  251. Stuart says:

I was wondering about that myself. We seemed more concerned with getting at bats for the bench candidates, and the “regulars” got no more than 2 at bats before they were yanked.

I think that watching paint dry would be better than watching the ineptitude now.

    Stuart

  252. Don’t fire him, rack him!

  253. The sheer amount of tattoos displayed tonight is staggering.
Looks like a game being played in the yard at San Quentin.

  254. Jandy says:

don’t forget the barbecue sauce ;)

  255. Sorry forgot to add the sarcastic ;)

  256. theplanisworking says:

Does San Quentin have a new scoreboard like PNC Park?

  257. They are saving the hits for the AZ series

  258. Jandy says:

    ahahahahaha Walker walks

  259. JRay3 says:

Have pitched well enough to be 4-1 but this lineup has the Bucs 1-4 out of the gates. Wasted opportunities whether in April or August are just that wasted opportunities and we have seen some nice pitching wasted.

And we rely on Jeff Locke tomorrow to snap this skid.

  260. JohninOshkosh says:

I hate Dodger Stadium. Bad, bad, place.

  261. JMB says:

    Stinkage

  262. Eric Bowser says:

Pirates have been shutout 3 times in the first 5 games.

No reason to panic.. let’s remember June and July from last season.

  263. Blecccch!
Too bad my town doesn’t have any bridges to jump off of.
Guess I’ll just have to come back tomorrow.
    Night all.

  264. JRay3 says:

Man I hope so since I will be there in person to witness all three of that set.

  265. Eric Bowser says:

    Pirates Offense
    2012 April: 22 games, 58 runs, 2.63 per game
    2013 April: 05 games, 06 runs, 1.20 per game

  266. theplanisworking says:

    Well, this is certainly frustrating.
It’s not like we are getting beat 6-1 every night.

The Pirate bats are nowhere to be found.
If a team loses consistently 2-1. 1-0. 3-1, it is going to be a very long season.

    We weren’t manhandled.
    We weren’t blown out.
Giving up 1 run should give a fairly good chance at a win.

But with this team, we almost have to pitch a shutout to have a chance.

neal told us all would be well.
    We would be improved.

Pitching wise, I like what I see.
    Hitting wise, YIKES !!!!

  267. Reading says:

The bandwagon will have to wait for tomorrow.

  268. Eric Bowser says:

Hopefully tomorrow after the kids birthday party, I can ice down the ankle and be ready to join the bandwagon.

  269. Reading says:

The “Sunday Lineup” will explode with offensive output. Maybe.

  270. Eric Bowser says:

McKenry should bat cleanup behind McCutchen…

  271. Eric Bowser says:

These questions by Robbie Inc(and something) to Hurdle… lame.

  272. Reading says:

I’ve figured it out. The Pirates lack of runs and offense in general is part of an intricate marketing plan to attract soccer fans. Now it makes sense.

  273. Eric Bowser says:

With the first pick in the 2014 MLB draft, the Pittsburgh Pirates are proud to select…..

  274. Reading says:

McKenry might need a rehab assignment before he is ready. He might not remember how to catch since it has been so long since he played in a real game.

  275. Eric Bowser says:

I’m thinking a lineup European soccer players could hit better than the Pirates

  276. DemonDachshund says:

    It’s part of Neal’s process that I didn’t understand.

The only place they’ve reliably gotten talent is in the top few picks of the draft. So they’re trying to get more talent in the only way they know how.

  277. Reading says:

A player who has informed all MLB, Japan League, Korean League, Indian League, and any other professional team in existence that, if drafted, he will not sign.

  278. Dave says:

    Just found this absolutely hilarious:

David Cameron ‏@DCameronFG After tonight’s shutout, the 2013 Pirates are now hitting .117/.185/.145. In 2012, pitchers hit .130/.171/.187.

  279. Daquido_Bazzini says:

Well, you know it’s bad when even I expected more.
What’s the sense of scoring a run in L.A. now?

  280. Bill Born says:

See the Sun comes up and we have another chance today.

    Hope beats eternal.

  281. John Lease says:

    How about 2 hit?

  282. BillyBaduka says:

It was competitive for 2 or 3 months. Can’t call Aug and Sept competitive by any stretch of the imagination. But it’s obvious at this point they were playing well above their talent level. It’s equally obvious that is not sustainable.

The last two years have been the most cruel. Assemble the beginnings of competitive teams then big whiffs at the deadlines. The players have said as much. This isn’t opinion.

Being a small market club, it’s generally agreed there are limited windows when the club can compete for post season. The last two years could have been that and were squandered.

I think that is why the despair is kicking in do early this year even among many die hards.

I hope we all get our winning season and a shot in the post season.

So if I have to chose, I’ll take utter failure for last year. Not fair to say it is same as 62-100 but I’d bet the stomach churning feeling of the collapse part II was more intense and took more out of the fan base than a “straight” losing season would.

  283. John Lease says:

    Made me laugh!

  284. John Lease says:

If McKenry goes 4-5 today with 2 HR’s, does Martin find a seat on the pine?

Kicking the Pirates while they are down… Pirates offense

    Runs – last
    hits – last
    doubles – 27th (4)
    triples – last (0)
    home runs – last (0)
    Average – last
    On base % – last
    slugging – last
    ops – last

Now to be positively shocked, their pitching
    ERA – 2nd
    Walks – 3rd
    Strikeouts – 8th
    Batting Avg Against – 2nd
    WHIP – 2nd

  290. Eric Bowser says:

Amazing how a historically bad (20 losing seasons in a row) team could find a way to suck even more but Neal Huntington has found a way to do it.

  292. JAL says:

Shows how little offense they would have needed to win some of these games

  293. Drew71 says:

    Ok. NOW can we panic?

  294. Eric Bowser says:

Yep… just have a NL team average 19 runs and this team is in a totally different spot in the first week of the season.

Since Greg Brown and Bob Walk said there’s no reason to panic…. well, I can’t panic…..

  295. Eric Bowser says:

Greg Brown was admonishing anyone that thought it… so you’re not allowed.

  296. Eric Bowser says:

besides, I need you to concentrate on the weather down there. We’ll be in Orlando on Saturday, so let’s get those 80s, sunny, slight breeze conditions ready for my arrival!!

  297. theplanisworking says:

…………and the neal Huntington defenders will be along to tell you just how wrong you are, because they are all the smartest men in the room…….

  298. theplanisworking says:

    Hey, I resemble that remark…….. ;)

  299. theplanisworking says:

Nope, we arent allowed to panic………..ever.

    Our fanhood would be questioned………..
neal had built a winner, just be patient
(as if 20 years isnt patient enuohg…….)

  300. Still waiting for your prediction for the first 32, JAL.

    :)

  301. Wonder when Nutting will panic. Probably on the ski lift.

  302. theplanisworking says:

Nutting will panic when it hits the cash register……..

  303. BFD says:

at least they haven’t been no hit……yet

    averaging 1 run per game?

Knowing you were going to be offensively challenged and your sole solution is bringing in Martin?

a measly 66 million in payroll after the great attendance figures last year, after promising “if the fans come, we will spend”

  304. theplanisworking says:

    Hey, he spent…………..

    New Burger bar,
    New Scoreboard,
    Russell Martin,

    give the millionaire a break!
Its not easy losing 21 straight years !!!!

  305. Which is never. He’s an astute business man, remember?

    :(

  306. theplanisworking says:

    Lucky,

I thought you were going to pull the ole chestnut… “when a Nutting owns something, he owns it forever” !!!

    HOKA HEY !!! ;)

  307. MadTurk says:

If last year is any indication then NO he will be bench for a few games.

  308. Drew71 says:

    Done.

    Beginning Saturday: 83, 82, 85, 84.

Sorry about the 85. Was aiming for low 80s.

  309. RobertoForever says:

Did you just say essentially the same thing that Neal Huntington said at the end of last year? He got RIDICULED for saying that. And skewered for not going all-in.

I guess six months gives perspective.

  310. WVStarship says:

    Actually, it’s billionaire.

This organization has turned losing/failure into an art form. That’s all they know and all they do. I can see this team losing indefinitely as long as the owner stays in place.

  311. Daquido_Bazzini says:

Come on….What about the addition of John (Old) McDonald?!

  312. Drew71 says:

Still on track for Dejan’s 1-31.

    My Gosh.

    He might just nail one.

  313. Arriba Wilver says:

Greg Brown became a Neal Huntington toady the end of last season. Remember him lobbying for Neal to be retained? Seriously, who does that? Even if Neal was Theo Epstein. What broadcaster does that? I realize they are homers by definition, but . . .

    DK: (Falls in love)

  314. Drew71 says:

So Philadelphia traveled to Winnipeg yesterday where they were spanked by the Jets, 4-1.

I wonder if Dejan was there.

    Cheering.

  315. Drew71 says:

He wasn’t cheering the outcome, of course. He’s a professional. Meaning he’s a journalist, not an editor.

No. He was just happy he got a prediction right.

I’m sure we’ll see the link about that.

    Over and over.

  316. Arriba Wilver says:

Yep. Get a defensive specialist late inning SS replacement for a defensive specialist starting SS. Sheer brilliance. No one else would have thought of it. No one.

  317. maddamma says:

    Rochester, NY

  318. Drew71 says:

    Ewwwww

  319. Drew71 says:

Mildly agree but it’s the least of their problems.

Anybody see how his starters are hitting?

  320. Arriba Wilver says:

No dispute there, Drew. It’s a “macro” view, not “this is the reason they can’t hit” view.

  321. Thundercrack says:

The strategy is to have a good pinch hitter bat for Barmes late in games.
They may still be working on that part.

  322. Arriba Wilver says:

They have the same 25 player limit as other teams. But maybe they haven’t figured that out. WE all know they are offensively challenged.

  323. Drew71 says:

Let’s say the Pirates start their B Team for the day game.

Let’s say they win with the B Team, and guys like Fort, Old McDonald or Harrison knock the cover off the ball.

Honestly, I wouldn’t know what to make of that.

  324. Thundercrack says:

I am a fan of G Brown. But the most ridiculous part of his argument to keep NH was that if we did get rid of him it would start another 5 Year Plan.

  325. Thundercrack says:

I was being sarcastic in that they can’t find any part of the equation.

  326. Arriba Wilver says:

    +1

(Sorry, I’m a Pirate fan, and I’m NOT happy)

  327. Drew71 says:

    Ewwwww

  328. Drew71 says:

Don’t jinx me. I’m very superstitious.

I’m a few other things, too.

  329. Drew71 says:

Using in vogue business-speak, they are NOT offensively challenged. Rather, they are achieving exactly the offense they were designed for.

Yeah. I know. This stuff is always overstated, and if taken to its extreme because silly.

But i believe there is at least half a good point in this.

Of course if we take it to En Vogue we have a whole different meaning.

  330. Drew71 says:

I could rewrite En Vogue’s Don’t Let Go.

Picture Greg Brown holding onto Neal’s leg.

Or after today, Dejan holding onto yours.

  331. Arriba Wilver says:

That was the crux of his argument.

  332. NorthPirateFan says:

It would be under normal circumstances but with the Pirates there are no normal circumstances.

If we’re to accept that Jones isn’t starting tonight because there’s a LHP pitcher on the mound, then someone needs to ask Clint Hurdle why Travis Snider only has one start against RHP and why Gabby Sanchez, Starling Marte and Jose Tabata continue to get starts against RHP despite mounds of evidence saying none of them ever should be.

I think you assigning a level of rational thought, logic and reason to Clint Hurdle’s process of making out his line up that just isn’t there. More likely, given Hurdle’s handling of Garrett Jones since coming here, he’s got something against him and will use whatever excuse is handy to keep from putting his name into the hat from which he randomly draws the name that end on the lineup card.

At least that’s ow it appears to be.

  333. NorthPirateFan says:

Blaming these results on the payroll just isn’t going cut it anymore as the facts of the past several just don’t support the argument.

13 Million of that payroll is going to two guys who simply can’t hit and whose combined salary could have instead been used to sign one decent hitting lefty corner outfielder or first baseman. Martin and Barmes are getting the money this time but the names are almost irrelevant at this point as it’s been the case every year now since Huntington come on board the he’s spent sizable amounts of money on marginal quality spare parts that implode rather than use the money to adequately address the offenses needs.

This season it’s doubly frustrating as they had the very type of player they need to be acquiring already in the organization at a very low cost but let him go on waivers just two days before the season opener because the brain-trust running this outfit believed a 39 year old UTI was more valuable that a left handed first baseman who hits home runs and walks in bunches.

I’m thoroughly convinced by what’s transpired the last few seasons that even if Neal Huntington and Clint Hurdle were handed the top payroll in the majors the team wouldn’t look much different than it does now and you’d just see the same light or non hitting utility type players earning scads more money.
