Comments

  1. Kevin says:

go penguins… get that W… and clinch that division tonight. Then you can worry about all the other bs over the remaining 8 games.

  2. SJB says:

Just like against Buffalo, the Pens very well could lose this game and I wouldn’t be surprised if they did. The Pens are in a weird spot right now.

  3. Kevin says:

penguins did struggle last time they played… and our lines are all mixed up. Wonder who’s in goal… probably Fleury.

  4. SJB says:

20 years ago today Mario scored 5 goals in the Penguins 10-4, and record setting 16th straight win against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden.

His stats at that point were 67 goals, 90 assists and 157 points, in only 58 games in a season that he battled back from cancer.

At 1.52 points per game, he could have scored 97 goals and 128 assists for 225 points had he played all 84 games.

There’s great and then there’s Mario.

  5. theplanisworking says:

    +1. And beyond

  6. Pucknutz says:

Gotta post my superstitious GO PENS!
    I feel much better now.

  7. TJ says:

They are playing without 4 of their best players in Crosby, Neal, Martin and Letang. The Canes must be playing pretty poorly to be the under dog at home. I think this is a “trap” type game.

  8. tpbco says:

Anyone who watched him play…knew he was the greatest talent ever to skate with a stick. Even Gretsky (eventually) admitted it.

  9. tpbco says:

Agree, even DK called them quitting, choking dogs…I imagine J Staal will try to get them going.

  10. tpbco says:

Not to pick nits…but 157 points in 58 games is 2.71 ppg. You may have typed and thought that it was too ridiculous (and it was) cause your projected total was right. He averaged right at 2 ppg for his career when he retired the first time, which was the highest in league history.

  11. Pucknutz says:

    Agree w/ya TJ.
Of course I am well aware that they are playing without 4 of their best players seeing it written out in black & white sorta sent a strange chill down my spine.
Tonights game is by no stretch a must win game and I feel they still oughta win it but I am not going to panic if they do not. I would really like to one of the lines start really clicking. Iggy,Geno, and Kunitz would be “real” nice.
I think they just need to play a solid game win or lose and not get anyone else hurt!! `

  12. SJB says:

Yeah, I thought it sounded off when I typed it knowing what his points per game career average was. I think I was averaging goals per game, not points. 99.8% of all players would be thrilled with 1.52 ppg. ;)

  13. tpbco says:

    For a month….

  14. MadTurk says:

    I agree, nice post

  15. SJB says:

In the QMJHL for Laval in his last year, he scored 133 goals and 282 points in 70 games. Now, granted, that league was all about offense, but the logistics of those kinda numbers are mind boggling to comprehend just because you would think it’s gotta be hard to score that much anywhere unless the other team is always down 2 men and the goalie is a dwarf with one arm. ;)

  16. SJB says:

    or Darren Pang.

  17. Bizrow says:

The best thing for me is my memory of him playing, especially the goal vs the Blackhawks in the Cup Run

  18. Bizrow says:

If you haven’t logged in where you live, or are not sure, please post a reply to this post.

Yes, I should have been a census taker, but I love the fact that so many different places follow this here blog.

Posting the whole list takes up space ;-)

  19. Pucknutz says:

Hey Biz, I am from “not sure”!! LOL
    Ya I know what you ment – just being a smart-a** !
    Mars, Pa.

  20. SJB says:

NJ…14 years now and still hoping it’s just a temporary thing.

  21. Milo Hamilton says:

Westgarth is Bill Cowher’s son in law.

  22. Jandy says:

My take (for what it’s worth) is the Canes are desperate. They are trying to just make the playoffs.

  23. Jandy says:

Thanks Milo. I’d forgotten about that

  24. Jandy says:

Geez it’s a penalty box parade. Not good

  25. Milo Hamilton says:

Carolina is 1-11-1 in their last 13 games.

  26. Milo Hamilton says:

Penguins missing $22.2 million of their $66.4 million payroll tonight due to injury. Roughly one third.

  27. Bizrow says:

Well, where I NJ? A neighborhood will be fine, no, I’m gonna add SBJ as a location, thanks

You gotta go where the streams of life drifts you, and I was lucky

I’ve been lucky in many ways, I will live in Western Pa for my whole life

You run into Burghers/WPA folks all the time out there, that’s one reason I keep the list.

Maybe I should start listing lunatic names?

  28. Bizrow says:

I added those, thanks, I sure hope no one audits my list

  29. SJB says:

Mullica Hill, NJ. Outside of Philthy, PA.

Yup, Gotta go where the jobs are anymore.

I envy people who can stay where they grew up. Wish I could have. The world is nice to visit but not necessarily a better place to live in.

  30. SJB says:

    Morrow finally on the board!

  31. Jandy says:

    Yes!

  32. SJB says:

    MAF looking bad…again.

  33. Milo Hamilton says:

Hope you all had the over.

  34. Sarah says:

Yeah he’s been awful this year

  35. SJB says:

    Meant this game.

  36. Sarah says:

    Ward out for all those?

  37. Milo Hamilton says:

    Yes.

  38. Eric Bowser says:

For a 2-2 game, this one sure lacks much excitement.

  39. SJB says:

Has an early regular season feel about it. Lots of slop and careless play.

  40. SJB says:

Canes PK 28th in the league and this is all the Pens can muster with the likes of Mallkin, Iginla, Kunitz, Morrow and Dupuis?

  41. Sarah says:

Did we bring Bennett up just to put him on 4th line?

  42. SJB says:

    I guess so.

  43. Sarah says:

Inconsistent is the best you can say about it.
    Fire Mike Yeo!

  44. Jandy says:

    That infuriates me

  45. Jandy says:

    like

  46. Sarah says:

And sat Depres too, at least Bortuzzo scored….

  47. SJB says:

Another PP, another instance of Malkin forcing passes.

  48. Sarah says:

    Cripes is this sloppy

  49. Jandy says:

    Nice block by Murray :)

  50. Jandy says:

He’s unrelenting on that..smack him upside the head Grrr!

  51. Sarah says:

Yeah but they’re giving up WAY too much space in their own end….really sloppy stuff.

  52. So 4 goals in the first period and none in the 2nd?

    Could it be “overtime”?

  53. Jandy says:

yes they are, I’m just hoping for a win here so they can practice again and hopefully get some lines clicking. This is messy.

  54. MadTurk says:

Like for more hitting and scoring in the third period.

  55. MadTurk says:

Look not like but I would like to see that happen.

  56. SJB says:

    Pathetic in their own end.

  57. SJB says:

Bortuzzo doing his best to make up for that goal he scored.

  58. Jandy says:

I was just thinking that ::sigh::

  59. Milo Hamilton says:

They’re playing very poorly tonight but it’s also been a weak effort in goal. A true team effort against this awful team.

  60. Milo Hamilton says:

And so much for that “Malkin really picks his game up when Sid’s out” thing.

  61. SJB says:

So we shouldn’t be surprised if they lose in the 1st round to a team they should beat. With Crosby, Letang and Neal back, they should be prime for an upset.

  62. Jandy says:

    Bite your tongue!

  63. Milo Hamilton says:

No because that’s been their track record.

  64. SJB says:

    And the 4th liner scores!

  65. Jandy says:

    Tanner Glass!!!!

  66. SJB says:

    I wouldn’t be surprised.

  67. Jandy says:

    Beau Bennett!

    Geno!!!!

  68. Milo Hamilton says:

    I’m gold with these things.

  69. SJB says:

Yaaay! Malkin gets off the milk carton!

  70. Jandy says:

    Thanks, Milo!

  71. Jandy says:

    and onto the Vodka bottle!

  72. Milo Hamilton says:

    You’re quite welcome.

  73. MadTurk says:

    Or mama’s soup can

  74. Jandy says:

    that too!

  75. SJB says:

Seriously, does it have to be this hard? I just don’t get the mindset of athletes who should by all means know better to let themselves fall or struggle against teams that they should beat. Short term memory issues? They knew the situation coming into this game especially after the Buffalo fiasco and boom…it’s happens all over again.

I just hope they have woken up enough to hold onto this lead and build on this going into the next game if they can.

  76. SJB says:

I’ve found often that talking negatively about players and situations is the best way to make a change for the better even if it means eating crow. I’ll eat crow 24/7 if it means winning.

  77. SJB says:

Can’t believe I’m rooting for the Habs to beat the Caps but I really don’t want that team to succeed again…ever!

  78. Milo Hamilton says:

Does Jordan Staal still play ?

  79. SJB says:

Isles up 3-1 on the Flyers. That’s nice.

  80. Milo Hamilton says:

That’s the Penguins 1st division title since 2008.

  81. SJB says:

Whew! Not a great win but I’ll take it. Atlantic Division Champs!

  82. Jandy says:

    ZING!

  83. Jandy says:

    like

  84. JohninOshkosh says:

Being a Pirate fan, I will never scoff at winning a division-even if 16 teams make the playoffs.

Everything set for a Pens/Wild final.

  85. MadTurk says:

Their MO for the last several games has been to play a little open in the first, start a little hitting in the second, and hit more in the third.

  86. Jandy says:

I for one would LOVE THAT!

  87. Jandy says:

that’s the icing on the cake!

  88. TJ says:

I really didn’t need another reason to read the Trib over the PG; but if you go to their main page and breaking news it reads the following:

    http://www.post-gazette.com/stories/sports/penguins/penguins-clinch-atlantic-division-championship-with-5-3-victory-over-panthers-682755/

I was really impressed with the Pens ability to shut down Cam Newton tonight. That guy isn’t nearly as good on skates.

  89. theplanisworking says:

    Re-like.

  90. theplanisworking says:

    +1

  91. TK39 says:

That’s a really interesting stat. I was trying to think of a good way to quantify how much they’re playing without right now. Losing their top guys means more to the Penguins than it does to some other teams because their top guys are who they are and their salaries limit their ability to sign depth players (though they’ve done a fantastic job and are loaded this year). The salary cap stat illustrates that fairly well.

  92. TK39 says:

And it was a pretty fantastic goal at that! Great work by Jokinen on that shift too! I wish Morrow could see more time in the top six but I guess it’s a good problem to have.

  93. TK39 says:

I think I’d still rather see him in Pittsburgh than in WBS, especially come playoff time. Even just practicing with the group they have in Pittsburgh has to be good for his development. It looks like he might see some time on the PP too. The lines were a mess last night anyway. It’ll be really interesting to see what happens if/when they get healthy.

Kennedy, Jeffery, Vitale, Jokinen, Glass, Bennett, and Adams all competing for fourth line spots? That’s rough. You have to figure Adams is a lock, I would think Jokinen has to play somewhere and Bylsma seems pretty enamored with keeping Glass in the lineup. That leaves Kennedy’s skating, Bennett’s skill, and Vitale’s faceoffs in the press box.

Remind anyone on Miro Satan not being able to crack the lineup?
