  1. Ghost says:

I’m queasy about the surveillance creep in our society, but this week and tonight were awesome displays of American hi-tech know-how put to good use and some real intensive hard work by a whole lot of police and F.B.I folk.

  2. Dave G says:

    Let’s Go Pens!

  3. scapper says:

Pregame “fesitivities” (because that’s really what it will amount to) should be nauseating, but looking forward to the game. What I’m really looking forward to is news about 7, 18 and 87 making huge strides toward their returns.

  4. 21sthebest says:

And the poor soul who lost both of his legs but yet still scribbled on paper when he woke up that he could identify the bomber and allowed himself to be interviewed by police while in ICU.

  5. Milo Hamilton says:

Beautiful spring morning in Western Pennsylvania. It’s snowing. Bleh.

  6. Drew71 says:

    + x +

  7. Brandie says:

Did someone swipe your tail, Eeyore?

  8. Brandie says:

Good to hear from you today, Drew.

  9. Drew71 says:

    You’re just daring me.

    I’m not gonna do it.

Besides. Kinda busy getting ready. My son and I are going boating today.

(I almost did it. But hey. You can probably boat in snow. Actually, I have no idea if you can.)

  10. Drew71 says:

Good morning, Brandie. I was all fired up yesterday.

Yeah. In more ways than one, I suppose.

But I mean by work. I was renegotiating a $130M contract for my company that took all day and into the evening. Actually it was the culmination of a six week process. The end result: the new contract improves our financial position by $22M/year.

Yeah. $130M. That’s an ANNUAL figure. Wow. Seriously WAY out of my league. Don’t my bosses know I’m an idiot??

(Place inevitable, tiresome Pirates payroll comparative posts HERE [X])

I was so wired I had trouble getting to sleep last night. Especially after coming home to learn about the capture. Had to watch that when I should have been sleeping.

    And then I awoke depressed.

    My commission?

    You guessed it.

  11. Drew71 says:

Note to self: keep negotiations going beyond 5:00 PM on Fridays. We do better. Or more accurately, the other side does worse.

Baseball note to self: Never again complain about Scott Boros or Pirates or any side at the table taking the negotiations to the wee hours of a deadline. It works.

  12. Pucknutz says:

    GO PENS!

  13. MadTurk says:

Yes you can, a small boat is better, just have to know you cannot stop it once it gets going downhill. Kinda like Drew negotiating a contract or speaking about the weather.

  14. Bizrow says:

    + 1

  15. Bizrow says:

Is it safe here today ;-)

  16. Drew71 says:

That reminds me of a story…

  17. Drew71 says:

(With obligatory caveats and exclusions regarding real stuff going on in the world…)

    I hope not.

  18. Bizrow says:

    + 1

  19. JohninOshkosh says:

    Huge game in Manitoba today.

If the Islanders defeat the Jets today then I think: 1, The Rangers will hold off the Jets for the last playoff spot and 2. The Islanders will hold off the Rangers for the 7th spot.

May the force of Neil Young and the Guess Who be with the Jets

I would much rather see the Pens play NYI in the first round. The Rangers are a worry,

Are Kathryn Tappen and Kaherine Heigl the same person?

Oh, and did I mention-the Chicago Blackhawks are a good hockey team.

  20. Milo Hamilton says:

I was worried about you. Just trying to smoke you out. By the way I’m going to the game tonight, think of me while I’m freezing, will ya ?

  21. Bizrow says:

I think I’m gonna pass tonight, still frozen from Opening Day

But due to shrewd negotiations, I control the remote in the living room tonight….

  22. MadTurk says:

    Please do tell

  23. MadTurk says:

So far so good, maybe because it is not the game thread? ehh Pirate game thread.

  24. Milo Hamilton says:

This will be my third game this year. I’ve seen snow on two of them. And that doesn’t count that beautiful 58 degree day I spent in Clearwater in March. Global warming indeed.

  25. Drew71 says:

Yes. I’ll wait for THAT thread to get some things off my chest

  26. BillyBaduka says:

Flyers officially eliminated from playoffs last night! Ahhhh, that’s nice.

Gotta love this quote from Bozo the Clown: “It’s the first time in a long time for Philadelphia, for myself, to be eliminated not by your own doing”

Uhhh, Scott it was by the Flyers own doing. All those games you lost, remember? That’s why you’re out, not the Rangers outburst against Florida. That’s just one game.

And Claude, it’s overdue that you pass the Best Player in the World baton back to Mr. Crosby.

  27. Drew71 says:

    Yes. Pass the baton.

But keep the little twirly skirt and pig tails.

  28. Milo Hamilton says:

If the Pens win today they clinch home ice against everyone except Chicago.

  29. Jandy says:

Glad to see you Drew Dahling. I was concerned. :-*

  30. Thundercrack says:

Went to the Buccos game last night. Also went on Sunday afternoon. Probably the 2 best games of the year. (AJ’s 1 hitter was a good one too…did I just type a drug reference?)

The team looked really, really good.

Btw? Is it ok to talk baseball here or do I wait until the ge thread

  31. TJ says:

I am guessing not everyone is an ESPN insider so I will put this up; its a little bit of information pertaining to Cooke’s return to Ottawa on Monday.

Erik Karlsson may be close to returning from the torn Achilles tendon that has kept him on ice since mid-February, but don’t expect that to have any impact on the way Ottawa Senators fans welcome the man who injured him, Pittsburgh Penguins pest Matt Cooke.

On Monday, Cooke will pay his first visit to Ottawa since his skate sliced through Karlsson’s heel back on Feb. 13. Despite the good news concerning Karlsson’s recovery, at least one group of locals are preparing a decidedly hostile reception.

According to CBC’s Doug Harrison, about 60 members of Sens fan group Red Scarf Union are finalizing plans for a “Matt Cooke Hatefest,” which will include organized chants and the distribution of Western-style “Wanted” posted emblazoned with a picture of Cooke’s face.

“There will be quite a few of us carrying that [poster] around,” one RSU member told CBC. “You can chant and everyone hears that, but if some of our signs can get caught on TV, then the message is clearly seen.”

  32. Brandie says:

Guess you are not “dripping with riches”…oops…oh no…gonna get banned. Perhaps…Shanabanned For the low blow. :-)

  33. DemonDachshund says:

The message that fans Ottawa can’t tell an intentional play from an accident?

Yeah, we’ve figured that out already, thanks guys.

(Is this topic still ok? I know we’ve discussed it a lot… Not sure what the threshhold is.)

  34. Brandie says:

    When, Milo, When…Time for positivity.

  35. No threshold for anything hockey.

  36. Milo Hamilton says:

  37. scapper says:

C’mon! Lay off St. Claude. Those were a stunning 8 periods of hockey when he wore the Best Player crown.

  38. cherokee23 says:

58 being physical! jagr & Chara

  39. Drew71 says:

    That’s good

  40. cherokee23 says:

It’s taken me a long time, but I’m starting to like Tanner Glass. I think he’s been more comfortable, effective and noticeable since the new guys arrived

  41. Milo Hamilton says:

Someone please clean up after Kris Letang please. Yikes.

  42. Brandie says:

    Quite messy indeed.

  43. JohninOshkosh says:

I’m not sure fate will allow a Bruins loss today.

  44. J Walter Weatherman says:

    Pretty weak defense by Letang.

Watching NESN feed on NHL Network. They didn’t show a replay of the Cooke penalty. Looked pretty suspect. Announcers all over Cooke about Pens nomination of him for Masterson award, showing more ignorance. They still haven’t gotten over his hit on Savard a few years ago.

  45. JD says:

Bruins announcer just compared Matt Cooke to Sirhan Sirhan. What a tool.

  46. JohninOshkosh says:

Bruins TV crew just rips the Pittsburgh press on national television.

  47. Brandie says:

The best way for the Pens to show respect is to play em hard.

  48. Milo Hamilton says:

Jack Edwards. Perfect chance for me to compare him to Baghdad Bob from the 1st Gulf War.

  49. J Walter Weatherman says:

    See my post above

  50. cherokee23 says:

I hear ya, but i think if we come out of the first period no worse than 1 down we’ll be OK

  51. JohninOshkosh says:

Dumbest thing I’ve heard on sports telecast all year.

  52. TJ says:

I guess because they just went through the unimaginable the past couple days this TV crew feels they can say what ever they want.

  53. cherokee23 says:

Way to stay classy Boston….especially in the wake of recent events

  54. TJ says:

After what the city of Boston just went through you’d think they would pick their words a little better. Absolutely disgusting to compare a hockey player to Sirhan Sirhan.

  55. JD says:

Good one Milo. He claimed Cooke tried to “assassinate” Savard.

  56. Brandie says:

This would be a moot point if Cooke was banned forever, but he wasn’t. I feel bad for Savard, but the Wayback Machine does not exist, so we cannot change the past. Time to move forward.

  57. J Walter Weatherman says:

Wow, this is getting pretty bad by the refs. Bad enough that the Pens are playing with no energy, but getting iffy calls against them will be too much to overcome.

  58. Milo Hamilton says:

Thank God for the 1st Amendment. But you really can’t just say anything. I really believe in a legal sense he might have just crossed the line.

  59. TJ says:

I didn’t hear Steigerwald or Errey taking shots at Subban the other night; they mentioned the incident once you could hear the fans boo every time he touches the puck. Some people just take things to a level they don’t need to go.

  60. cherokee23 says:

Where u watching to hear the boston crew?

  61. TJ says:

There is only so many teams you can beat without the likes of Crosby, Malkin, Neal, and Martin. Those are go to guys that carry teams at times. And when they don’t you get contributions from other guys; well now our other guys are the go to guys.

  62. J Walter Weatherman says:

Everywhere but Pittsburgh. NESN is on NHL Network

  63. Milo Hamilton says:

No, just going by what everyone said here. It’ll be posted soon enough if it’s as bad as everyone says.

  64. JohninOshkosh says:

(On Masterson Award) “outrageous lack of judgment on part of the Pittsburgh press.”

  65. JohninOshkosh says:

I love city of Boston. Not so much their sports teams.

  66. cherokee23 says:

Horton been looking for fight whole game……Iginla such a pro!

  67. J Walter Weatherman says:

Next time you hear Bob Errey say something stupid, which is often, just be thankful he doesn’t say anything as stupid as comparing Cooke to Sirhan Sirhan.

  68. J Walter Weatherman says:

These refs are something else today

  69. JohninOshkosh says:

I think the Commish should look into this a bit.

BTW-this Edwards guy is awful, putting aside his stupidity for a moment. Might have to do that sync thing Milo does for last 2 periods.

  70. Brandie says:

Is some of this vitriol coming from the fact that Iggy chose the Pens over the,?

  71. MadTurk says:

    Or the officials

  72. cherokee23 says:

    I think so!

  73. MadTurk says:

It will be very hard for the pens to win or even have a real power play today. Bad enough with all the chaos the last few days but the refs are all for Boston today. Seems they want them to win to help lift the city.

  74. Brandie says:

    Sour grapes? Classy!

  75. cherokee23 says:

DK……..What’s your take on the boston announcers? I’m watching the Root feed, so haven’t heard it, but in light of current events, comparing a hockey player to sirhan sirhan seems a bit over the top, and extremely insensitive.

I feel good to get out of 1st down 1-0. I think we’ll see better, more inspired play from the Pens remainder of game.

  76. Brandie says:

Makes hockey look like wrestling…fixed, not good for the sport at all.

  77. Naje says:

Cherokee… check DK’s twitter feed up the page on the right side…he’s very direct about what he thinks…

  78. Jandy says:

  79. Milo Hamilton says:

Edwards just gave a lame apology on twitter and of course played the “bad week” card. This isn’t the first time he’s done this sort of thing. He’s a repeat offender. He’s got serious issues. Maybe he should get some help.

  80. Jandy says:

This is ridiculous. Hopefully something is said in the dressing room so the guys come out with a bit more energy for the second period.

  81. cherokee23 says:

Thanks….I always forget that’s up there!

  82. Milo Hamilton says:

And as far as Boston announcers go, I love listening to Don Orsillo & Jerry Remy. They do an excellent baseball broadcast.

  83. cherokee23 says:

    To DK, an emphatic, Bravo!!!!

  84. Jandy says:

Put him in a straight jacket and have him sit in either goal for the remainder of the game. Azzmunch!

  85. Milo Hamilton says:

The Senators have just hired Jack Edwards for Monday night’s game.

  86. JohninOshkosh says:

    Agreed. Total pros.

  87. cherokee23 says:

People been fired for less than what he said!

  88. cherokee23 says:

  89. JD says:

He just apologized on air. Said his conscience got to him.

  90. Joni says:

I noticed that Jarome ended the fight pretty quickly – perhaps he was aware that Horton was injured?

  91. Milo Hamilton says:

    Wasn’t aware he had one.

  92. Brandie says:

    Tying goal changes everything.

  93. J Walter Weatherman says:

Nice effort in front of the net. Need those grinder goals today.

I agree with Dejan. Edwards apology seemed sincere. Back to the game.

  94. Joni says:

There was a weird pause after he mentioned the NHL having a problem with His comments. My eye that the man apologized due to his own conscience.

  95. Jandy says:

Horton shouldn’t have engaged if he can’t take it

  96. Brandie says:

If so, just shows how much of a professional Iggy is.

  97. cherokee23 says:

What I love about these guys is that when they’re playing their best, it’s like they are all grinders

  98. Jandy says:

Are there any referees at this game today?

  99. Milo Hamilton says:

Having done that sort of thing myself once or twice, he was told.

  100. J Walter Weatherman says:

Vokoun is bailing out the team today. Very uninspired effort by the Pens so far. Lots of bad habits from earlier this season resurfacing.

  101. MadTurk says:

Yes hard to see them when they are wearing Boston sweaters

  102. Jandy says:

Wow.. they called a penalty on Boston

  103. Jandy says:

    True dat!

  104. Jandy says:

Was that not a clean legal check?

  105. Brandie says:

    Hades has frozen over.

  106. Milo Hamilton says:

When you watch some of the better teams play it’s easy to see the advantage the Pens have when everyone is healthy. The Bruins have dominated play but they struggle to score. Same with the Rangers. A lot of toughness, not a lot of touch.

  107. J Walter Weatherman says:

Completely clean hit by Cooke. Typical overreaction by B’s.

  108. J Walter Weatherman says:

Has anyone informed Letang that the game started – over an hour and a half ago?

  109. Brandie says:

    Astute observation.

  110. J Walter Weatherman says:

And his stupid play on the PP leads to a Pens penalty.

  111. Jandy says:

  112. Milo Hamilton says:

While Brendan Sutter is a superior offensive player to Jordan Staal, he’s been very disappointing defensively.

  113. Brandie says:

Constant play will help his game round into form.

  114. Jandy says:

    such a ray of sunshine

  115. Jandy says:

    Our fair weather friend

  116. Joni says:

Letang is trying to do it all on his own. Not working today.

  117. MadTurk says:

    What Drew check in?

  118. Jandy says:

    You know

  119. Jandy says:

  120. cherokee23 says:

Cooke…..looked like a pretty standard hip check to me

  121. Jandy says:

Letang on a bad day is better than a lot of d-men on a good day. That said, time for him to focus.

  122. Bizrow says:

I see some new posters here, welcome,

If you haven’t posted where you are currently residing, please add a reply to this post

    We’re up to 332 locations, I think

  123. Joni says:

    Couldn’t agree more.

  124. Jandy says:

You do a great job keeping up with the lunatics, Biz

  125. Milo Hamilton says:

Brandon Sutter has 5 game winning goals of the 11 he’s scored.

  126. Jandy says:

    Milo? Nahhh he’s cheery.:)

  127. cherokee23 says:

You calling Sutter for the gamewinner…..If i’m not mistaken you’ve called your shots in the past with some success!

  128. Jandy says:

    Marchand is a friggin tool

  129. Jandy says:

  130. J Walter Weatherman says:

Since I was on Letang’s case earlier, I will give him credit on that PP. Nice job to keep the play in the offensive zone.

  131. Jandy says:

Nice play by Tanger to keep puck in play

  132. Milo Hamilton says:

He’s like the power hitter in baseball. He might strikeout a couple times, but then he’ll hit one 450 feet. He’s prone to the spectacular.

  133. cherokee23 says:

ya, what the hell was that!

  134. Milo Hamilton says:

    Tyler Kennedy, annoyingly durable.

  135. Jandy says:

    I <3 u Milo.:)

  136. Jandy says:

    Very magnaminous of you

  137. Milo Hamilton says:

    See above.

  138. Jandy says:

Is there bad blood history with Jussi and Marchand or another Bruin?

  139. J Walter Weatherman says:

Well said, as he hits a HR. I won’t dare compare him to Pedro. That would be too insulting to Letang

  140. Jandy says:

    Any more complaints about Letang?

  141. J Walter Weatherman says:

Again, Vokoun has been huge in this game

  142. Jandy says:

    Player of the game Vokoun

  143. Milo Hamilton says:

Russell Martin is playing 3rd base tonight.

  144. cherokee23 says:

McQuaid got nothing to complainabout after that garbage

  145. Brandie says:

    Durably annoying?

  146. J Walter Weatherman says:

I’ll keep complaining about Letang until he becomes more consistent, but I admit that he’s worth the headaches

  147. Jandy says:

  148. J Walter Weatherman says:

I guess Hurdle is easier to persuade than the Canadian National Team Management

  149. Jandy says:

    Very magnaminous of you

  150. Brandie says:

Dupuis, Glass, and Adams…Gettin it done.

  151. Milo Hamilton says:

The Penguins look like the Red Wings of 5 years ago. That’s the highest compliment I can pay them.

  152. Jandy says:

    Darn straight!

  153. J Walter Weatherman says:

I rest my case with that last play

  154. Jandy says:

I guess we’re not all as perfect as you are.

  155. cherokee23 says:

These last 2 games(Montreal & Boston) have me at the point where I can’t wait for 7 game series hockey. The Cup is far from a guarantee, and I don’t see Chicago or the West play much hockey…..but I don’t see any team in the East that can hang with the Pens thru 3 periods of hockey, let alone 7 games

  156. Joni says:

    Buffalo, NY

  157. cherokee23 says:

    You’re right!

  158. TJ says:

Wow. All I can say is wow. This is turning into a TEAM. Last night I watched Miracle one of my favorite movies. And if it was ever clear that it takes a TEAM to win it was that team but man do the Pens look like a TEAM.

  159. J Walter Weatherman says:

Dejan, no Vokoun in your 3 stars? I thought he was the reason the Pens won this game. Outdone on every stat line, outshot pretty significantly, and really outplayed for most of the first 2 periods. Vokoun was the difference.

  160. Jandy says:

Trust me Chicago is more than capable. They have a great team

  161. MadTurk says:

Nice win and good to see the officials show up as well.
They do look like a team that can win it all.

  162. Naje says:

    Nice one, Milo…

  163. J Walter Weatherman says:

Agree. I’ve watched the Hawks quite a bit. They’re the only team that can match the Pens skill line-for-line. Their goaltending has been playing above their talent, so that may become an issue in the playoffs. Would love to see a Pens-Hawks Finals.

  164. Bizrow says:

  165. Joni says:

    Thank you!

  166. Pucknutz says:

Saw the first period, then had to go do some stuff. Appears the Pens continue to rolll!!

    Shero for MVP! LOL

    GO PENS!
