  1. It’s nice that the Pirates are rolling in so much dough that the $1.375 million they wasted on Jonathan Sanchez is just a drop in the bucket.

    • Milo, my Good Man,

You just do not understand the Plan.

Of course, neither do the majority of people………
      or, Hippos…….

    • Do you really care about the money the spent on Sanchez? Do you think it is significant, will prevent them from acquiring someone else, or could have been added to other money to get someone else?

I don’t really care. As a matter of fact I am kinda glad they are paying him not to pitch.

    • “Bob Nutting thanks you for protecting his wallet.” – Milo Hamilton

    • You guys misunderstand. I’m not concerned in the least bit. They that that & more covered by making sure Gerrit Cole doesn’t become Super 2 no matter what he does in Triple A.

    • Milo smile now…..Sanchez has been DFA’d.

Anyone can play, and everyone should try!

Thanks to all for playing and good luck!!

  3. No Snider, no Walker and one of our best remaining pinch-hitters off the bench is throwing tonight. Sure hope this does not catch up to us or we play in one of those 15 or 19 inning marathons from last night.

    • “…one of our best remaining pinch-hitters off the bench is throwing tonight.”
      He’s DH’ing for himself.

    • Who would’ve thought before the season started people would want Snider in the lineup?

Funny things happen when they actually play the game.

      • Very true indeed…really miss him this series with the Brewers throwing all RHP against the Bucs. Our consistent lineup versus right-handed arms with Snider in the two spot and Walker in the 5 spot hitting on his strong side and Martin in the 7 sport was really doing some damage.

        • We might not be missing him that much if Hurdle would actually play the correct lineup.

Let me guess, Gaby Sanchez is 3 for 7 with a double and two walks against Estrada. Clearly grounds for starting him over Tabata.

  4. Checked in on the Bucco Blog for the first time this year and wow. This Sawcheck guy writes a TON of stuff each day.

Maybe it would be better for Dejan if we did our Pirate talk there so that all the other sports topics wouldn’t be bothered?

Side note, hope this frees Rob B. up for some occasional column work. Guy’s coverage has been outstanding since the Winter Meetings.

  5. Pirates DFA J. Sanchez, call up Bryan Morris….

Can we all quit complaining about this now?

  6. Question: Outside of Cole, Taillon, Heredia, who is your favorite Pirates Prosect and why?

Mine; Duke Welker for a couple of reasons.
    1. Awesome baseball name
    2. Blazing fastball

    • For me it would be SS Alen Hanson for no other reason than I long for the day that the Pirates actually field a SS that can hit and field the position…(although seems like the fielding part is where he is seeing more struggles.

As for pitcher’s outside those three….find myself rooting for Andy Oliver. Live arm from the left side, rushed to quickly to the majors by Detroit and cast off. Talent is there, like some of those reclamation projects that end up panning out, pull for him to get it together.

    • Gregory Polanco, without a doubt.

Hard not to get excited about the kid after what we’re hearing from people OUTSIDE the organization this year.

      • Really liked the comparison to Dave Parker made by a scout, if he turns in to the second coming of the Cobra, it will be really fun to watch him play.

      • Agree, doing some reading on him. I know the name of course, just not all of the information.

I am a big believer in pitching first, so I’m pretty good on the pitching prospect side.

  8. I can’t fault the Pirates at all on jonathan sanchez….was worth a flier and he got the right amount of chances and now he is gone. Not saying the BUCS had enough healthy pitching options to start season just saying I can’t fault the lookers on Sanchez. I have to love the bullpen depth the pirates are building…Morris Wilson look very good.

  9. Why Sanchez couldn’t have drilled Braun last night, I’ll never know.

Oh, it must have been because that might have been useful.

  10. Add me to the New Mexico list (Albuquerque). I will also take the over for tonight for 100.

  11. FYI for you out of town Pirates fans, on the Pirates-Brewers game is the free game of the day.

  12. Biz

Looking at the list, I would like to nominate Willie “Pops” Stargell.

Seems incomplete with out him (and Maz), from back in the day when the Pirates WERE the Pirates.

    • He was on the list, then there was a suggestion that anyone in a sports players HOF could be listed with that statement

So we took off a few names, but I asked if The Great One could stay on the list

      • That’s fine…list might get too long (this IS Pittsburgh), otherwise.

        Seemed kinda obvious.

Agree on The Great One, spent a lot of time in the right field stands at Forbes Field.

        • Me too, some of the best times of my life

Stupid though, did not recognize it

The funky right field screen added the magic to Forbes

I think the Clemente Wall adds some of the same funk to PNC

The discussion was it would respect so many players

          In our minds anyways :-)

  13. The same manager who was the root cause of our loss last night (by playing Barmes) is now going for an encore performance – by starting him again.

MacDonald played well on Sunday and earned another shot – but didn’t get it.
Conversely, Barmes played like crap last night was deeply integral to the loss, and there he is again in the lineup.

Classic example why CH cannot manage. He talks real good, but chokes when on stage.

  14. Just heard Hanrahan was activated and also told he’s no longer closing.

  15. NMR….
What is the problem with looking at past performance v. a pitcher? That’s what players LOVE to do… they salivate when they know they’ve gotten the better of a matchup. Seriously, every manager has done this for, well, ever. You know the game, but this issue seems to get you wound up. It is the way the game is played.

    • I think NMR was referring more to the size of the sample then looking at the past performance itself. Not to put words in his mouth. Just my opinion.

      • I understand that, MT, but in baseball parlance 10 at bats is a ton information. Even seeing a pitcher for 6 at bats and maybe three other times when you were on the bench and you got to watch. My point: any experience, even one at bat, is enough to give hitters a lot of information and get them to feel comfortable.

The sample sizes, no matter how small, really help a hitter’s comfort at the plate.

        • I agree the hitter should always take away something from every at bat against every pitcher they face and store it for future use. I think the questioning was who to play against a certain pitcher as well. That sample size, for a manager should be larger or as large as possible. They have to weigh the information to make an educated decision. So as a manager they would like the size be larger than 6 or 7 at bats. Also gut feeling can be entered into the equation as well based on the hitter hitting recently and also the pitchers pitching. Numbers don’t always tell the tell on a certain day or current trends

  16. Excuse me while I interrupt this Pirate thread for an important announcement
24 hours to the Pens Game!!!

  17. Ya know, guys and gals, DK tipped us to him thinking this Sawchik kid is very good, He’s in Mikwaukee, with RB. Heck of an “investment” by a company in an industry that is struggling to survive. This is a terrific forum going on here and sometimes I don’t think it’s appreciated enough. Just one old guy’s thought.

  18. Does anyone know how they determine if the roof gets opened or not? Is it determined before the season? Daily based on the weather? Pull numbers out of a hat? What the hippos at the Milwaukee Zoo do?

    • Well I know what the hippo’s do. Eat and poop a lot no matter id the roof is open or not

    • In Arizona it is based on temperature but I can’t recollect the cutoff….they do have a part on team’s website dedicated to roof status. In Miami I read they said roof was only anticipated being open 20% of time something to do with humidity. Milwaukee no clue.

  19. The bats are awake tonight!

  20. Wehner just said Marte is batting .619 in the first inning. Pretty incredible.

  21. Come on Cutch. Time to Tee off!!

  22. Marte starts it off with a single now 14-22 in first, .636…Martin follows up with hit and we are business early.

    Cutch RBI! Keep it coming.

  23. There you go Cutch. Little steps to get that average back up. 1-0 Good Guys. ADD ON!!!

  24. I will do my best to get the stats updated as soon as possible tonight.
Whomever has the most points at the end of the evening will be our APRIL WINNER!

***First Place at the end of APRIL will win:***

Whomever wins can contact me via Twitter at in order to claim their prize.

Thanks as always to all of you. YOU ROCK!!!

  25. This ump is being very consistent and calling the actual strike zone. Good to see for a change.

  26. How about we wait for a dead spot for Twitter Tuesday ? Not with the bases loaded. Come on guys.

  27. Darn, Pedro!

  28. Trying to pull and outside pitch and he pops out to second – infield fly rule.

  29. well crap….would’ve been nice to get a couple more.

  30. In all seriousness, might as well just turn it off right now.

  31. Never good to ONLY get one run in that situation. Not in this place. They needed MORE.

  32. Thanks Brandon Inge look at two right down the middle and than swing at pitch in dirt, when is Walker back?

Really needed more than one there.

    • Yeah, hell of an at bat there. Really has to feel proud of himself. Maybe he and Pedro can exchange recipes after the game.

  33. Yeah, this is going to come back to bite them.

  34. You cannot go to MIL and score just 1 run in that inning.

  35. Didn’t they learn from all of the walks last night? Come on James!

  36. sheesh JMac, in the dirt???

  37. Good job Barmes :)

  38. Nice play from Barmes there. at least got the out he needed to.

  39. Beautiful…great support for JMac

  40. Scoop Sanchez!! Nice inning boys! Get some more runs now!

  41. Not sure if anyone else notices this but it looks to me like McDonald is hiding something with his shoulder. He’s moving his shoulder/arm after some pitches…

  42. Obviously the plan tonight is to sit on first pitches no matter how big, fat and juicy they look. Lame plan.

  43. Marte almost beat that out.

  44. My wife is making me watch dance moms. ugh

  45. Have to throw strikes JMac…too many free passes being dished out. He is severely lacking any command…maybe time to speed up Morton’s rehab.

  46. Two straight walks, and now this is getting dicey. JMac all over the place now in his pitches.

  47. Need a DP here

  48. You know, I would say we are snakebitten there, but I really dont want to insult snakes!

  49. Just a joke…two walk both score, not even making them earn it, so frustrating to watch him pitch.

  50. And the two walks score as usual. 2-1 idiots in the lead.

  51. Comedy of errors.

  52. Keystone Cops……incredible….

  53. Pitiful. Now it is a typical game. 3-1 and now it’s time to go.

  54. Somebody’s soff.

  55. FOUR walks this one on four straight pitches….CH wake up there is a ball game being played here.

    • JMac”s pitch count thus far is 46 with only 21 strikes. We might get 5 innings out of him if we are lucky.

This guy is a real problem.

  56. They should just call it a game and put in Jonathan Sanchez…oh wait.

  57. Now THAT makes me smile :) :) :)

  58. Wow the Candy apples crew is visiting the Broadway crew of Mama Mia. Great tour. Hows the game going?

  59. As was stated earlier by AW, this top of the first inning has come back to bite them in the behind. We run up his pitch count and only get one, they do the same to James in the bottom of the second and get three runs. Sucks! Come on offense!

  60. When karstens gets ready, and Liriano joins up, I think JMac should be #2 starter for Indianapolis.

    • Correia is 3-1 but we couldn’t afford him, and McClouth is hitting 330, but he couldn’t play here

      • Neal Failington surely deserves a contract extension based on your statement, Bob.

Is it me or does this JMac get worse every time he pitches??

  61. Ok, vote time………………

    which is the worst:

    1) Dance Moms,
    2) this game, or
    3) Our fine announcers talking about cheese and eggs?

In the classic Chicago tradition, vote early and often. 8-)

  62. Cutch 2 fer 2 !

  63. Gaby ties it up!

  64. 2-run HR for Gaby Sanchez….

  65. Gaby!!!! 3-3 now. Way to crush it the other way, baby!!!

  66. RBI’s 14 and 15 for Gaby on his 4th HR of year, he is a run producing machine.

  67. Who in their right mind would start Gaby Sanchez over Jose Tabata ?

  68. Find your command now JMac, and get guys out. Offense picked you up, now repay them.

  69. Grrrr!! Put Barmes over on third base!

  70. Pedro not doing a good job of covering that line tonight. Another just inside that slowly rolls for another double, and just like that we are losing AGAIN. 4-3 and still only one out.

  71. and just like that, J-Mac gives up the go ahead run.

  72. Pirates need pitching soon or this season will be in the crapper before Mother’s day.

  73. These walks MUST stop

  74. Didn’t they learn early from pitching to Estrada. That worked out well for them. Hopefully it works better now.

  75. Time for a JMac wild pitch

  76. That’s 60 pitches. The bad news is at this rate we’ll only get 5 innings out of him. The good news is we’ll only get 5 innings out of him.

  77. Smoke & Mirrors: Pirates pitchers entered tonight w/ 9th best ERA in MLB at 3.57 but tied worst in MLB in walks at 101.

  78. Well here is some good news….after tonight we only have to play the Brewers 17 more times this season.

  79. JMac starting to look an awful lot like Sanchez….no idea where the ball is going.

  80. I looked up the range factor for our infield — not pretty for SS(3rd from bottom), which may account for some of Pedro’s inability to get to the line. Infield is a problem, thouh Pedro has pretty good stats this year.

  81. Hey Clint I think we have all seen enough…JMac does not have it, are we just giving another game away?

  82. Is Clint throwing in the towel? Get a new pitcher or go for mercy killing

  83. JMac sucks! I’m done with him and the Pirates should be too.

  84. In the words of the late Harvey Korman…”Gentlemen rest your sphincters!”

This team will take at least one series in Milwaukee this year.
    It’s still only April.
If this team can find a way to go .500 on the road, they will do some real damage.

To quote the late Cleavon Little…”Keep the faith brothers!”

  85. Once again, Pirates pitchers can’t handle doing their job in Milwaukee.

    This is beyond absurd.

  86. I will say it again… I miss Kevin Correia, and oh he pitched 8 shutout innings his last time out and has pitched 7 innings or more in each of his five starts.

  87. Dance Moms > Pirates.

  88. Just remember, WHAT DOES FRANKIE SAY?

  89. When’s batting practice over ?

  90. Is there some sort of lesson being taught? This is paiful.

  91. And I gave up Storage Wars for this.

  92. Does anyone think CH is watching the same game as we are? Or understand baseball as well as we do?

  93. WOW monster HR by Martin….

  94. I wont jump on the “smoke and mirrors” bandwagon, but here is one Hippo’s view of the Pirates…………………….

Too many things have to go exactly right for them to win.
Starting pitching has to be lights out.
Bullpen has to be lights out.
    Fielding has to be error-free.
    Hitting has to be huge.
All these things have to go well for the Bucs to win.

    Mistakes can never be afforded.
If any of those areas falter, the Bucs lose.
This team is not good enough to have a breakdown in any one area.

Some other teams can cover their mistakes.
    Not our Pirates.
And THAT is why I just dont have much faith in this team for the long haul.

  95. Russell Martin…no so washed up after all…Cutch…over his slump :)

  96. And I as I type the above, Martin and Cutch go long!!!

    Go Bucs !

  97. I think we might have found a catcher.

  98. No wonder DK stays away from here these days ;)

  99. Disappointing that we are wasting another solid offensive performance 5 runs in five innings and still trail by a few due to CH napping and poor starting pitching digging another huge hole. JMac should have been removed at 4-3.

Nice to see Martin raking and Cutch getting going.

  100. Can Russell Martin pitch?

  101. So, how long before those two runs are wiped out ?

  102. OK….since player bashing is the norm these days, I’ma blast Pedro. Had he stopped two of those drives down the third base line…we might have a tie game.

    There…now I feel better!

  103. Allow me for a second to dream…

If Marte and Martin can keep their strong hitting in the 1-2 spot AND McCutchen catches fire (which I think he’s hopefully starting tonight), then I like to see a lot of RBI off the bat of McCutchen.

    Marte – Martin – McCutchen – Jones – Sanchez – Walker – Alvarez – Barmes

Just imagine #2 — what this lineup could look like if they had a SS that could hit.

  104. 3 up and 3 down…

  105. Dance moms is over what did I miss? Kidding

  106. So far, this team has shown a truly remarkable resilience. I am not sure it can cover all weaknesses, but it does keep you checking in during Storage War commercial breaks.

  107. I suspect Hurdle will say that Jeanmar Gomez on a 70 pitch limit tomorrow & the pen already stretched thin are the reason he stuck with McDonald so long.

I’ll remind him that they have days off Thursday & Monday, will need only 4 starters til next weekend, and have fresh arms (Morris, Contreras) joining the ranks.

  108. That’s what I’m talkin about!! Grrrr!!!!

  109. Well now, lookit that..Inge on base :)

  110. If Tabata doesn’t hit into a DP, he’s going to double switch Marte out.

  111. Did anyone really think Tabata would come through there? Anyone???

  112. HOME RUN.

  113. How about that it’s a Marte Parte…3 run jimmy jack and Bucs retake lead.

  114. That was freakin outta there!

  115. This kid isunreal. And he is basically a rookie!

  116. superSTARling!!!!

    Tie game!!!!!

  118. OK guys, go back to watching Dance Moms and Storage Wars…go ahead :P

  119. If mcDonald wins this game, Clint will get my vote for Mgr of the year.

  120. I went downstairs to check on the dog. Does this mean I have to stay down there?

  121. I’ll take credit for that HR by Marte….

  122. oops…I tried to cheat us a run…8-7 good guys.

  123. A great break Tabby being called safe. Now is the time for great defense, strong relief and astute managing.

Let’s watch and see if all or any of that happens

  124. Hard to believe that JMac is line for the Win if bullpen can hold this.

  125. crap…crap…crap….

  126. Hilarious.

  127. Talk about a ss who can hit!

  128. Well that lead was short lived, good grief can we get anybody out.

  129. My GOODNESS, can anyone on the Pirates pitch against this team?!?

  130. I’m SERIOUS… get Melancon to pitch 2 innings (6-7) and Grilli (8-9)…

  131. annnnnnnnnnnnnnd it’s gone…

  132. Lol I was just typing that Mazzaro usually only gets into games that the Bucs are losing…guess he felt out of place with a lead

  133. Well, just don’t count these guys out. They’re fighting.
But I will say, the camera was on JMac and he looks awful…his head is very messed up.
Get the guy some kinda help…

  134. How in the world did Mazzaro pre-empt our solid bullpen? Oh that’s right, CH called that move

  135. I look forward to the day that Ryan Braun tries to catch a Gerrit Cole fastball with his ribs.

  136. That was as freaky as it gets. And STILL almost got the out.

Darn, I gotta get to bed. 4 am isn’t far away…I need a bit of shut eye.
Now listen, keep the faith,, they need GOOD vibes.

I go to bed knowing they are still in this game….night lunatics!

  137. Vin Mazzaro obviously has dinner reservations in Allentown Friday night.

  138. Just so I know, when everybody found out that Mazarro was coming in for the 6th, did you all get that “well, that lead won’t last” feeling that I got?

Seriously, I don’t know who makes the calls on what pitcher comes in, but that guy sucks at it.

  139. Nice to see Morris back up for 10 minutes. He’ll shut down the Brewers and his reward will be another bus ticket to Indy.

  140. DP by Inge… look at that pitching by Morris to setup Weekes

  142. Nice work turned in by the newbie Bryan Morris to get out of tough situation. Time for some more bats.

  143. Cutch rips the ball for his fourth hit of the night….4-4…good to see him get his groove back.

  144. Now DON’T try and steal Cutch – PLEASE

  145. Who’s this pitcher ? Looks like he has a future.

  146. Just a random question. When do they do random drug testing in the majors?

  147. Where on earth did Root Sports find this unprofessional Katie O’Malley chick????

  148. This isn’t baseball…. way too many balls flying out of park.

  149. That Brewer guy, (Bernie Brewer??) is going to have a sore butt after sliding down that chute all the time………..

  150. If only Pedro could hit like Betancort…

  151. Now Playoffs, there would have been an opportunity to pinch-hit with Fort and use Martin at third. That would be called managing – you see what I mean

  152. Well, OT for Minnesota-Chicago and St.Louis-Los Angeles – so tuning out of Pirates game for a bit. If this series is any indication, I’ll only miss an inning of softball.

  153. Martin may have equaled Hot Rod’s caught stealings and HR’s from all of last year in just the month of April.

  154. Marte with a hit…..come on Martin!

  155. Watson’s about 2 innings late

  156. Jean Segura, wasn’t she in Guys & Dolls ?

  157. Well that was fun.

Chicago and St. Louis win in OT at just about the same time.

    Nice, still in 8th inning…

    Sucks, two on though…

    • yeah… about that

      3-R HR by Rickie Weekes….

      12-8 Brewers…

Real STUPID…. really really STUPID to have Watson (lefty) pitching against RH.

Hurdle’s handling of bullpen cost team game.

      • Come on, man… These pitchers have been getting jacked all night. Someone has to make the pitches. Hurdle’s got an extended bullpen and tonight was the 2nd stringer’s night to come through and they didn’t hold up their end.

How about harping on Alvarez and his popout to 2nd with the bases loade… or GIDP with two guys on and one out.

Everybody contributed to this loss…Jones misplaying a ball in the outfield… and did I mention Alvarez? You can’t just run Wilson, Melancon and Grilli out there every night.

  158. Inside, Inside, Inside, then out over the plate, 3-run jack, ballgame, good night for good tonight folks!

  159. You guys just won’t let Hurdle breathe…

How about Pedro Alvarez and his 5 for 35 showing so far this season with RISP? And tonight a popout to 2nd with the bases loaded and one out and a double play with 1st and 2nd and one out.

He’s the lineup’s version of James McDonald. I’m a little more confident that he’ll find his game at some point…JMac? not so sure. But Alvarez draws an awful lot of negative attention to himself with his inability to hit with RISP.

  160. Weeks was batting .150 or so when this game started. Thi place is cursed.

  161. That’s elementary my dear Watson.

  162. Haha man they’re falling apart now

  163. Just came back from watching hockey, and basketball, and reading Dejan’s Wednesday column.

    BOOM! Weeks 3 run hr.

Might be time to check out on demand.
    Or the cartoon network……

  164. Shut up now they’re stealing bases uncontested? Someone’s cheekbone needs more baseball in it

  165. It looks like hughes could use some Indy time. Bad year, so far.

  166. The UNDER wins yet again.
