  1. Milo Hamilton says:

It’s nice that the Pirates are rolling in so much dough that the $1.375 million they wasted on Jonathan Sanchez is just a drop in the bucket.

Let’s open The Window…What’ll ya have? What’ll ya have?
As always this is just for fun and entertainment purposes.

Max “wager” is 100 units on each separate line.
All “wagers” must be divisible by 5.
Play as many lines or as few lines as you’d like.

Please put your replies in this dialogue box, makes it much easier for me to “book-keep” that way.

Total COMBINED HITS by Garrett Jones and Gaby Sanchez in tonight’s game
    Line is 2.5

Anyone can play, and everyone should try!

Thanks to all for playing and good luck!!

  3. theplanisworking says:

    Milo, my Good Man,

You just do not understand the Plan.

Of course, neither do the majority of people………
    or, Hippos…….

  4. Thundercrack says:

Do you really care about the money the spent on Sanchez? Do you think it is significant, will prevent them from acquiring someone else, or could have been added to other money to get someone else?

I don’t really care. As a matter of fact I am kinda glad they are paying him not to pitch.

  5. JRay3 says:

No Snider, no Walker and one of our best remaining pinch-hitters off the bench is throwing tonight. Sure hope this does not catch up to us or we play in one of those 15 or 19 inning marathons from last night.

  6. Ghost says:

I told myself yesterday I’d cut back on the gambling, but what the heck — I’m in.
    100 on the OVER, please.

…And I guess I’m back to drinking again, too.

  7. Ghost says:

“…one of our best remaining pinch-hitters off the bench is throwing tonight.”
    He’s DH’ing for himself.

  8. NMR says:

“Bob Nutting thanks you for protecting his wallet.” – Milo Hamilton

  9. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Who would’ve thought before the season started people would want Snider in the lineup?

Funny things happen when they actually play the game.

  10. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I got a push with last night’s lines. Tonight, another tough one.

let’s go with 100 on the UNDER.

  11. NMR says:

Checked in on the Bucco Blog for the first time this year and wow. This Sawcheck guy writes a TON of stuff each day.

Maybe it would be better for Dejan if we did our Pirate talk there so that all the other sports topics wouldn’t be bothered?

Side note, hope this frees Rob B. up for some occasional column work. Guy’s coverage has been outstanding since the Winter Meetings.

  12. JRay3 says:

Very true indeed…really miss him this series with the Brewers throwing all RHP against the Bucs. Our consistent lineup versus right-handed arms with Snider in the two spot and Walker in the 5 spot hitting on his strong side and Martin in the 7 sport was really doing some damage.

  13. Lad9 says:

Sigh… This has been humbling lately, but I will go with 100 on the over. I now know why I never bet real dinero. Thanks Playoffs. Go Buccos!

  14. NMR says:

We might not be missing him that much if Hurdle would actually play the correct lineup.

Let me guess, Gaby Sanchez is 3 for 7 with a double and two walks against Estrada. Clearly grounds for starting him over Tabata.

  15. Milo Hamilton says:

You guys misunderstand. I’m not concerned in the least bit. They that that & more covered by making sure Gerrit Cole doesn’t become Super 2 no matter what he does in Triple A.

  16. Milo Hamilton says:

Should say – they have that & more covered …

  17. JD says:

    100 over please.

  18. TJ says:

    100 Over please

  19. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Pirates DFA J. Sanchez, call up Bryan Morris….

Can we all quit complaining about this now?

  20. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Milo smile now…..Sanchez has been DFA’d.

  21. Milo Hamilton says:

    Tabata 1-5
    Sanchez 0-3

The current Pirates have a lifetime batting average of .176 against this jabrone.

  22. Evan says:

Playoffs, I havent posted in a while, but I want back in. Give me 100 on the OVER.

  23. JRay3 says:

Time to turn the House of Horrors into the Fun House…with that good afternoon to the window.

Not a really good feeling with Sanchez who is 1-9 in his last two starts versus a RHP…he has not proven his splits wrong yet apparently.

I will go 100 on the UNDER

Thanks Playoffs, and how about a win in Milwaukee tonight we are long overdue. Lets Go Bucs.

  24. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I don’t have a problem with Gabby starting over Tabata, unless he was actually in the OF, that would be a problem.

  25. welcome back…you got it!!!

  26. JRay3 says:

No kidding…its not like its Teddy Higuera or Ben Sheets pitching for them.

  27. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I wouldn’t say that Cole is ready for the call up though.

  28. JRay3 says:

Unfortunately about five appearances and four starts to late. Pirates record in games he has pitched in….1-4. That was a waste.

  29. Thundercrack says:

Now we start complaining about Bryan Morris.

Remember how we got him :-) ?

  30. JaxBuc says:

Please sir, may I have 50 pesos (in honor of the recently departed J.Sanchez) on the OVER?

I see a rally in the late innings against their shaky pen putting The Legend and the remaining Sanchez into the money.

  31. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Question: Outside of Cole, Taillon, Heredia, who is your favorite Pirates Prosect and why?

Mine; Duke Welker for a couple of reasons.
    1. Awesome baseball name
    2. Blazing fastball

  32. Ghost says:

Good tip. Went over for a looksee. Need to do that more often. A Roberto sighting while over there, incidentally.

  33. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

  34. Ghost says:

Forget the glass, give me the damn bottle.

  35. NMR says:

Except that means Garret Jones IS starting in the outfield. Gaby might not be any worse.

  36. NMR says:

Ha, yeah, complete with daily jabs at Dejan.

  37. Frankie says:

    Give 100 on the over

    Thank You

  38. Bizrow says:

    100 on the Over

    Thanks playoffs

  39. Bizrow says:

  40. Bizrow says:

    I’ll drink to that ;-)

TC, you sir are a troublemaker ;-)

  41. JRay3 says:

For me it would be SS Alen Hanson for no other reason than I long for the day that the Pirates actually field a SS that can hit and field the position…(although seems like the fielding part is where he is seeing more struggles.

As for pitcher’s outside those three….find myself rooting for Andy Oliver. Live arm from the left side, rushed to quickly to the majors by Detroit and cast off. Talent is there, like some of those reclamation projects that end up panning out, pull for him to get it together.

  42. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I figured Hanson would be the first one mentioned. To be honest, I have to do a little more reading up on the guy.

  43. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Since you mentioned servicemembers. I would like to take a moment for some of you to read this article.

  44. NMR says:

+1 for Oliver. Love me some lefty reclamation projects.

Similarly, I’m rooting hard for Stolmy Pimentel. Great story.

  45. NMR says:

    Gregory Polanco, without a doubt.

Hard not to get excited about the kid after what we’re hearing from people OUTSIDE the organization this year.

  46. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    True…Swan dive!!

But I’ll take his bat and lack of defense over Tabata’s better defense with lack of offense.

  47. OZ says:

    100 on the over, thx

  48. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I too am interested in Pimentel. Seems to be performing very well so far.

  49. JRay3 says:

Really liked the comparison to Dave Parker made by a scout, if he turns in to the second coming of the Cobra, it will be really fun to watch him play.

  50. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Agree, doing some reading on him. I know the name of course, just not all of the information.

I am a big believer in pitching first, so I’m pretty good on the pitching prospect side.

  51. Cmat0829 says:

100 per favor on the OVER. 2 hits for jones and 1 for Gaby.

  52. Cmat0829 says:

I can’t fault the Pirates at all on jonathan sanchez….was worth a flier and he got the right amount of chances and now he is gone. Not saying the BUCS had enough healthy pitching options to start season just saying I can’t fault the lookers on Sanchez. I have to love the bullpen depth the pirates are building…Morris Wilson look very good.

  53. Just went and looked there myself.
    Good stuff over there.
Gonna have to stop by there MUCH more often.

  54. Thundercrack says:

If Sawchuck knows what’s good for himself, he’ll steer clear of us.

  55. John Lease says:

No, because WHAT WAS THE WAIT FOR?

    And yes, I shouted it.

  56. Thundercrack says:

But I do agree that he does provide some good information on his blog

  57. John Lease says:

Why Sanchez couldn’t have drilled Braun last night, I’ll never know.

Oh, it must have been because that might have been useful.

  58. blazer says:

Add me to the New Mexico list (Albuquerque). I will also take the over for tonight for 100.

  59. Playoffs, let’s see if I can get back on a winning note and take 100 on the UNDER. I hope they get more than that, but Estrada has always baffled these guys, and it is in Milwaukee. Go Bucs!!!

  60. Oh, and Thanks, Playoffs!

  61. radio wave says:

At playoffs: I will take 50 on the over on today’s line.

  62. pattonbb says:

100 make believe units on the OVER, please.

  63. Bizrow says:

Polanco, if I spelled the name right

  64. Pucknutz says:

    100 on the under

  65. KJX says:

    100 OVER

  66. pattonbb says:

There’s some great stuff there. I feel like an idiot for not checking it out before now. Have to include it on the required reading list. Impressed.

  67. Bizrow says:

Thanks, it happens far too much.

Every day I drive to work over hills and dales, the worry today is some concrete truck with a crappy motor, a loaded truck behind it, I’m late, and thinking how can I pass this group that is moving up a hill.

That’s my worry today, completely and totally trivial in the overall scheme of things

Thanks for sharing Ryan and thanks to all for protecting me and mine while I sleep

  68. Bizrow says:

    Welcome blazer

A joke, have you seen Bugs Bunny there?

I know he was looking for that place ;-)

(I know, that dates many of us)

Another member, speak up, say what you think

  69. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

This is the base that I’m stationed at. Didn’t know those guys, but still family.

  70. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

BB just couldn’t follow signs well. When I see Albe, I think the same thing Biz or even when I make a wrong turn, say the same thing.

  71. Jason81 says:

    100 on the UNDER, please.

  72. JRay3 says:

FYI for you out of town Pirates fans, on the Pirates-Brewers game is the free game of the day.

  73. Bizrow says:

    Just get home ;-)

  74. tpbco says:

Looking at the list, I would like to nominate Willie “Pops” Stargell.

Seems incomplete with out him (and Maz), from back in the day when the Pirates WERE the Pirates.

  75. Bizrow says:

    Bugs always found something interesting

    As we all have ;-)

  76. Bob Hasis says:

The same manager who was the root cause of our loss last night (by playing Barmes) is now going for an encore performance – by starting him again.

MacDonald played well on Sunday and earned another shot – but didn’t get it.
Conversely, Barmes played like crap last night was deeply integral to the loss, and there he is again in the lineup.

Classic example why CH cannot manage. He talks real good, but chokes when on stage.

  77. Bizrow says:

He was on the list, then there was a suggestion that anyone in a sports players HOF could be listed with that statement

So we took off a few names, but I asked if The Great One could stay on the list

  78. Bizrow says:

Right now, without a Commodore to check stats, I think, IMO, Clint is 15-11 with some smoke and mirrows

CH is not the problem right now, its starting pitching, some injuries and having to burn up the bullpen

    Just sayin

  79. blazer says:

Thanks for that info. Should just make it home in time for the first pitch!

  80. tpbco says:

That’s fine…list might get too long (this IS Pittsburgh), otherwise.

    Seemed kinda obvious.

Agree on The Great One, spent a lot of time in the right field stands at Forbes Field.

  81. tpbco says:

mirrows…is that a fish you can comb your hair to?

  82. 21sthebest says:

Just heard Hanrahan was activated and also told he’s no longer closing.

  83. tdb1977 says:

100 on the under tonight. Thanks Playoffs!

  84. Bizrow says:

Yes, he has started out very strong

    Kudos to the Trib

  85. Bob Hasis says:

    How are you Mr. Lucky?

  86. Bizrow says:

Me too, some of the best times of my life

Stupid though, did not recognize it

The funky right field screen added the magic to Forbes

I think the Clemente Wall adds some of the same funk to PNC

The discussion was it would respect so many players

    In our minds anyways :-)

  87. Bizrow says:

Speeling is what kept me out of Havard ;-)

    Lets go Bucs

  88. Bob Hasis says:

They simply cannot be serious contenders with a SS like Barmes!

  89. cosmo says:

    100 on the over please

  90. Joey Mellons says:

70 on the over. Got a bad feeling on this one. Come on buccos.

  91. Naje says:

What is the problem with looking at past performance v. a pitcher? That’s what players LOVE to do… they salivate when they know they’ve gotten the better of a matchup. Seriously, every manager has done this for, well, ever. You know the game, but this issue seems to get you wound up. It is the way the game is played.

  92. Naje says:

15-11 against that competition and it’s been done with smoke and mirrors? Really?

  93. MadTurk says:

Excuse me while I interrupt this Pirate thread for an important announcement
24 hours to the Pens Game!!!

  94. Bizrow says:

Yeah, do you have a warm fuzzy feeling with a partial rotation and some of the injuries?

Melancons GP, 10 saves from Grilli

Calculate out to a 162 game season

  95. Bizrow says:

    Cool beans

    Lets go Pens

  96. Karen22 says:

75 on the OVER, please! (C’mon! I’m stuck at 150)!

  97. bman says:

I’ll take 45 on the OVER

  98. MadTurk says:

I think NMR was referring more to the size of the sample then looking at the past performance itself. Not to put words in his mouth. Just my opinion.

  99. Bizrow says:

And the deck for CH includes?

  100. Bob Hasis says:

The aforementioned McDonald would be a start

  101. Bob Spagna says:

Ya know, guys and gals, DK tipped us to him thinking this Sawchik kid is very good, He’s in Mikwaukee, with RB. Heck of an “investment” by a company in an industry that is struggling to survive. This is a terrific forum going on here and sometimes I don’t think it’s appreciated enough. Just one old guy’s thought.

  102. Brandie says:

    Mr. Playoffs,
I would like 100 on the over please. Thanks.

  103. Dadtackular says:

    100 on the over!

  104. cherokee23 says:

    100 over

  105. Naje says:

I understand that, MT, but in baseball parlance 10 at bats is a ton information. Even seeing a pitcher for 6 at bats and maybe three other times when you were on the bench and you got to watch. My point: any experience, even one at bat, is enough to give hitters a lot of information and get them to feel comfortable.

The sample sizes, no matter how small, really help a hitter’s comfort at the plate.

  106. theplanisworking says:

Good Lord, almost forgot to place my “wager”……………… busy hippo today, and we dont move very fast………

Mr. Playoffs, I wonder what, and how much thought goes into your lines? You seem to have a good system, whatever it is.

I can see Jones getting 2 hits, but unfortunately, I cant see Sanchez getting any. He is 1-9 against Estrada career-wise.

So, I will place 100 on the UNDER.

Thank you for the much needed diversion in this Hippo’s life.

  107. theplanisworking says:

Does anyone know how they determine if the roof gets opened or not? Is it determined before the season? Daily based on the weather? Pull numbers out of a hat? What the hippos at the Milwaukee Zoo do?

  108. Jandy says:

If i’m not too late 100 on the over, please

  109. pattonbb says:

    The bats are awake tonight!

  110. theplanisworking says:

    Hi Miss Jandy.

    Greetings from Hippoville.

  111. Arriba Wilver says:

Wehner just said Marte is batting .619 in the first inning. Pretty incredible.

  112. Come on Cutch. Time to Tee off!!

  113. JRay3 says:

Marte starts it off with a single now 14-22 in first, .636…Martin follows up with hit and we are business early.

    Cutch RBI! Keep it coming.

  114. There you go Cutch. Little steps to get that average back up. 1-0 Good Guys. ADD ON!!!

  115. theplanisworking says:

Hopefully this will be the end of Cutch’s slump!

  116. Honestly, there are a few lines I spend a decent amount of time researching and thinking about, but the majority of the time I wing it.
I take a quick glance at the lineup, think for about 20 seconds about the last 4-5 games, and POOF, a line is born!
My old man always said it’s good to serve a purpose.

  117. Jandy says:

TC thrives on trouble…pass the bottle!!!

  118. Window is officially CLOSED!

  119. theplanisworking says:

Well, your lines do make us think most times.

And, really, I have a restaurant the next town down called “Just Wing It”, serving wings and sandwiches near a college. Had to make me chuckle when you used that reference.

    Lets Go Bucs tonight!
    End the Chamber of Horrors!

  120. Jandy says:

  121. MadTurk says:

I agree the hitter should always take away something from every at bat against every pitcher they face and store it for future use. I think the questioning was who to play against a certain pitcher as well. That sample size, for a manager should be larger or as large as possible. They have to weigh the information to make an educated decision. So as a manager they would like the size be larger than 6 or 7 at bats. Also gut feeling can be entered into the equation as well based on the hitter hitting recently and also the pitchers pitching. Numbers don’t always tell the tell on a certain day or current trends

  122. I will do my best to get the stats updated as soon as possible tonight.
Whomever has the most points at the end of the evening will be our APRIL WINNER!

***First Place at the end of APRIL will win:***

Whomever wins can contact me via Twitter at in order to claim their prize.

Thanks as always to all of you. YOU ROCK!!!

  123. MadTurk says:

Well I know what the hippo’s do. Eat and poop a lot no matter id the roof is open or not

  124. This ump is being very consistent and calling the actual strike zone. Good to see for a change.

  125. Milo Hamilton says:

How about we wait for a dead spot for Twitter Tuesday ? Not with the bases loaded. Come on guys.

  126. JRay3 says:

In Arizona it is based on temperature but I can’t recollect the cutoff….they do have a part on team’s website dedicated to roof status. In Miami I read they said roof was only anticipated being open 20% of time something to do with humidity. Milwaukee no clue.

  127. Jandy says:

    Darn, Pedro!

  128. I’ve heard of buffalo wings, any chance they have hippo wings?

  129. Trying to pull and outside pitch and he pops out to second – infield fly rule.

  130. Jandy says:

No no YOU rock, Playoffs :)

  131. Frankie says:

    Agree ..What bad timimg

  132. pattonbb says:

well crap….would’ve been nice to get a couple more.

  133. Jandy says:

  134. Milo Hamilton says:

In all seriousness, might as well just turn it off right now.

  135. Never good to ONLY get one run in that situation. Not in this place. They needed MORE.

  136. Arriba Wilver says:

  137. JRay3 says:

Thanks Brandon Inge look at two right down the middle and than swing at pitch in dirt, when is Walker back?

Really needed more than one there.

  138. theplanisworking says:

    BLASPHEMY !!!!!!!!!

We Hippos are a bit more dignified than that.

  139. Arriba Wilver says:

Yeah, this is going to come back to bite them.

  140. theplanisworking says:

    Most, not all. ;)

  141. Eric Bowser says:

You cannot go to MIL and score just 1 run in that inning.

  142. theplanisworking says:

Thanks. I just get confused when the roof is open/closed on consecutive nights.

  143. theplanisworking says:

Milo, are you calling the “twits” for doing that? ;)

  144. Didn’t they learn from all of the walks last night? Come on James!

  145. Jandy says:

    sheesh JMac, in the dirt???

  146. Just out of curiosity, how did the whole “hippo” thing start?

  147. Jandy says:

    Good job Barmes :)

  148. Nice play from Barmes there. at least got the out he needed to.

  149. SJB says:

Yeah, hell of an at bat there. Really has to feel proud of himself. Maybe he and Pedro can exchange recipes after the game.

  150. Jandy says:

    Beautiful…great support for JMac

  151. Brandie says:

If so, then Hippo, Hippo, Hooray. Sometimes it takes a while ton get your timing down.

  152. Scoop Sanchez!! Nice inning boys! Get some more runs now!

  153. Bob Hasis says:

    I agree

  154. Eric Bowser says:

Not sure if anyone else notices this but it looks to me like McDonald is hiding something with his shoulder. He’s moving his shoulder/arm after some pitches…

  155. Jandy says:

    That’s not good.

  156. Eric Bowser says:

    real nice pick by Sanchez

  157. Jandy says:

Hi my friend Hippo, how are you this evening? :)

  158. theplanisworking says:

    I am 6′ 3″, and weigh over 300 lbs.

I have a bad heart and a very bad left leg, so I move slow and waddle like a Hippo. Look like one also.

    Hence the Hippo references.

But when I am on the dance floor, my friends say I look like an elephant on crack. Nice friends, eh?

  159. Jandy says:

    Whew, just made it!

  160. theplanisworking says:

    Hi, Miss Brandie.

    Any requests tonight? :)

  161. SJB says:

Obviously the plan tonight is to sit on first pitches no matter how big, fat and juicy they look. Lame plan.

  162. Marte almost beat that out.

  163. theplanisworking says:

    Um, I am not !

  164. JohnH says:

My wife is making me watch dance moms. ugh

  165. Jandy says:

Can we suit you up to play for the Steelers????

  166. pattonbb says:

    your next wife won’t

  167. theplanisworking says:

    What on earth is that?

Wait, I dont want to know……

  168. Jandy says:

ewwwwwwwwwwwwww you couldn’t pay me to watch that crap!

  169. SJB says:

    No offense :)

  170. The way he is throwing, he probably isn’t as loose as he wants to be. At times he seems to be overthrowing. We’ll see how it goes.

  171. Jandy says:

    haha great one patton ;)

  172. Sympathies to you John.

  173. SJB says:

If this game goes like most against the Brewers you’ll be thanking her later.

  174. Jandy says:

    hey, how goes it Brandie?

  175. He also seems to be doing this more when a runner is on base at first.

  176. JRay3 says:

Have to throw strikes JMac…too many free passes being dished out. He is severely lacking any command…maybe time to speed up Morton’s rehab.

  177. Two straight walks, and now this is getting dicey. JMac all over the place now in his pitches.

  178. Jandy says:

eh..even the Bucs losing isn’t as bad as Dance Moms…that’s just disgusting

  179. theplanisworking says:

Jandy, if you thought Colon was horrible, well, I would be worse.

Besides, I can see (and hear) it now……….

    Holding,…………. #67 Hippo……….. 10 yard penalty, still 1st down.

Kinda embarrassing, dont you think? ;)

  180. Jandy says:

    Need a DP here

  181. Milo Hamilton says:

I have a feeling you’ll be thanking her before the night is over.

  182. theplanisworking says:

You know, I would say we are snakebitten there, but I really dont want to insult snakes!

  183. Jandy says:

  184. JRay3 says:

Just a joke…two walk both score, not even making them earn it, so frustrating to watch him pitch.

  185. And the two walks score as usual. 2-1 idiots in the lead.

  186. Jandy says:

    double crap!!!

  187. JRay3 says:

    Comedy of errors.

  188. pattonbb says:

    Keystone Cops……incredible….

  189. Pitiful. Now it is a typical game. 3-1 and now it’s time to go.

  190. pattonbb says:

    triple crap

  191. If we find out he is hurt tomorrow, I will say that you called it Eric.

  192. Milo Hamilton says:

    Somebody’s soff.

  193. JRay3 says:

FOUR walks this one on four straight pitches….CH wake up there is a ball game being played here.

  194. JohnH says:

    She is the second one.

  195. Jandy says:

    yeah, what you said!

  196. SJB says:

They should just call it a game and put in Jonathan Sanchez…oh wait.

  197. Jandy says:

Now THAT makes me smile :) :) :)

  198. JohnH says:

Wow the Candy apples crew is visiting the Broadway crew of Mama Mia. Great tour. Hows the game going?

  199. Pucknutz says:

Well, there is a hockey game on – Wild up 1 – 0 on the Hawks end of first.
Backstrom hurt in warm-ups – backup goalie, young kid ain’t played since the end of Jan. Not doin too bad.
Yo go – knock off the Hawks!!
Ya sure – very early LOL

Dance Moms, Hmmm even with my warped mind I might even watch the Buccos, let me get back to you on that. :)

  200. The Gunner says:

JMac”s pitch count thus far is 46 with only 21 strikes. We might get 5 innings out of him if we are lucky.

This guy is a real problem.

  201. JohnH says:

Maybe they should put in Inge as pitcher

  202. SJB says:

Exactly as you’d expect a Pirates/Brewers game to go.

  203. As was stated earlier by AW, this top of the first inning has come back to bite them in the behind. We run up his pitch count and only get one, they do the same to James in the bottom of the second and get three runs. Sucks! Come on offense!

  204. Patrick(ri) says:

When karstens gets ready, and Liriano joins up, I think JMac should be #2 starter for Indianapolis.

  205. theplanisworking says:

    Ok, vote time………………

    which is the worst:

    1) Dance Moms,
    2) this game, or
    3) Our fine announcers talking about cheese and eggs?

In the classic Chicago tradition, vote early and often. 8-)

  206. Milo Hamilton says:

JMac’s getting yelled at by Honey Boo Boo’s mom.

  207. theplanisworking says:

    Cutch 2 fer 2 !

  208. Jandy says:

    Dance Moms, hands down

  209. Pucknutz says:

  210. Jandy says:

    Gaby ties it up!

  211. Eric Bowser says:

    2-run HR for Gaby Sanchez….

  212. Gaby!!!! 3-3 now. Way to crush it the other way, baby!!!

  213. Jandy says:

don’t count these guys out just yet…

  214. JRay3 says:

RBI’s 14 and 15 for Gaby on his 4th HR of year, he is a run producing machine.

  215. Milo Hamilton says:

Who in their right mind would start Gaby Sanchez over Jose Tabata ?

  216. Pucknutz says:

Watch where ya put them hands – ya know what runs downhill don’t cha?

  217. SJB says:

That’s right! We have to wait until JMac makes it official. ;)

  218. JohnH says:

hope she doesnt kick him with her forklift foot

  219. Find your command now JMac, and get guys out. Offense picked you up, now repay them.

  220. SJB says:

Who’s saying anyone in Pirates management is in their right mind?

  221. Patrick(ri) says:

Apples and oranges — bet ya if Snider not hurt, Gabby on bench.

  222. JohnH says:

    why even bother starting anyone

  223. theplanisworking says:

    Just not touching that one!

  224. Jandy says:

    darn straight

  225. Jandy says:

  226. Jandy says:

Grrrr!! Put Barmes over on third base!

  227. Pedro not doing a good job of covering that line tonight. Another just inside that slowly rolls for another double, and just like that we are losing AGAIN. 4-3 and still only one out.

  228. pattonbb says:

and just like that, J-Mac gives up the go ahead run.

  229. SJB says:

Pirates need pitching soon or this season will be in the crapper before Mother’s day.

  230. JohnH says:

i am missing an egg and cheese discussion?

  231. Jandy says:

    These walks MUST stop

  232. Didn’t they learn early from pitching to Estrada. That worked out well for them. Hopefully it works better now.

  233. SJB says:

Time for a JMac wild pitch

  234. Jandy says:

Put Johnny Mac in SS, and move Barmes over the 3rd

  235. theplanisworking says:

  236. Jandy says:

wash your mouth out with cheese! ;)

  237. Milo Hamilton says:

That’s 60 pitches. The bad news is at this rate we’ll only get 5 innings out of him. The good news is we’ll only get 5 innings out of him.

  238. SJB says:

    Cheddar please.

  239. How about Martin and put the Fort behind the plate?

  240. Eric Bowser says:

Smoke & Mirrors: Pirates pitchers entered tonight w/ 9th best ERA in MLB at 3.57 but tied worst in MLB in walks at 101.

  241. Jandy says:

  242. Jandy says:

    I don’t wanna hear the ugly …

  243. theplanisworking says:

Yes…………. it all started with the asking of Grilli what his favorite cheese was. Then they talked about cheese, then Wehner talked about egg and cheese sandwiches………… oy!

  244. Jandy says:

    Eric likes hot stuff!

  245. Eric Bowser says:

    ranked 10th in K’s with 205

  246. JRay3 says:

Well here is some good news….after tonight we only have to play the Brewers 17 more times this season.

  247. Jandy says:

    I can live with that

  248. JRay3 says:

JMac starting to look an awful lot like Sanchez….no idea where the ball is going.

  249. Bob Hasis says:

Correia is 3-1 but we couldn’t afford him, and McClouth is hitting 330, but he couldn’t play here

  250. Jandy says:

    Nah…you’d be more like Max Starks…immovable… :)

  251. Bob Hasis says:

No Jandy, about another 60 feet further to the right

  252. Patrick(ri) says:

I looked up the range factor for our infield — not pretty for SS(3rd from bottom), which may account for some of Pedro’s inability to get to the line. Infield is a problem, thouh Pedro has pretty good stats this year.

  253. JRay3 says:

Hey Clint I think we have all seen enough…JMac does not have it, are we just giving another game away?

  254. Patrick(ri) says:

Is Clint throwing in the towel? Get a new pitcher or go for mercy killing

  255. SJB says:

JMac sucks! I’m done with him and the Pirates should be too.

  256. In the words of the late Harvey Korman…”Gentlemen rest your sphincters!”

This team will take at least one series in Milwaukee this year.
    It’s still only April.
If this team can find a way to go .500 on the road, they will do some real damage.

To quote the late Cleavon Little…”Keep the faith brothers!”

  257. Eric Bowser says:

Once again, Pirates pitchers can’t handle doing their job in Milwaukee.

    This is beyond absurd.

  258. The Gunner says:

Neal Failington surely deserves a contract extension based on your statement, Bob.

Is it me or does this JMac get worse every time he pitches??

  259. JRay3 says:

I will say it again… I miss Kevin Correia, and oh he pitched 8 shutout innings his last time out and has pitched 7 innings or more in each of his five starts.

  260. SJB says:

Yup, still April and just think, they still haven’t played the Padres yet. Good thing April games don’t count. ;)

  261. That’s right, they were gonna go undefeated this year….

  262. The Gunner says:

    JMac is just plain awful

  263. SJB says:

    Dance Moms > Pirates.

  264. Milo Hamilton says:

  265. Bob Hasis says:

I’d rather quote General Patton; whatever he said, always made sense!

  266. Correia in April, May and early June was a darn good pitcher.
Correia in July, August and September was a darn good BP pitcher.

Distance makes the heart grow fonder sometimes.

  267. The Gunner says:

JMac doesn’t have any options left. So based on that, he is here to stay

  268. Just remember, WHAT DOES FRANKIE SAY?

  269. Milo Hamilton says:

    When’s batting practice over ?

  270. Jandy says:

Say what you want about KC, he got wins.

  271. Jandy says:

wash your mouth out with Cheese!

  272. Patrick(ri) says:

Is there some sort of lesson being taught? This is paiful.

  273. SJB says:

Oh stop. Bad baseball is bad baseball. Sugar coating it with “it’s still early” doesn’t make it go down any easier unless you hide a prozac or two in there with it.

  274. theplanisworking says:

    Did you call, Milo? ;)

  275. JRay3 says:

I would certainly take his 3-1 2.23 ERA this April over what I have seen from JMac and Sanchez. Cole could have come up late in year for him if need be.

  276. Patrick(ri) says:

And I gave up Storage Wars for this.

  277. theplanisworking says:

    May I have another?

  278. SJB says:

It feels like a Limburger kinda nite.

  279. No denying that.
I never really had a problem with him.
He really was just as advertised, nothing more and nothing less.

  280. Jandy says:

    that’s why I appreciated him :)

  281. JohnH says:

I think at the end of the year there will be 5 pirates pitchers with better stats

  282. Bob Hasis says:

Does anyone think CH is watching the same game as we are? Or understand baseball as well as we do?

  283. SJB says:

    Storage Wars > Dance Moms

  284. I’m afraid to ask…what should he have done tonight?

  285. JohnH says:

They need Abby yelling at them. Her Studio is in Pittsburgh. She would make one heck of a bobble head

  286. Eric Bowser says:

    WOW monster HR by Martin….

  287. theplanisworking says:

I wont jump on the “smoke and mirrors” bandwagon, but here is one Hippo’s view of the Pirates…………………….

Too many things have to go exactly right for them to win.
Starting pitching has to be lights out.
Bullpen has to be lights out.
    Fielding has to be error-free.
    Hitting has to be huge.
All these things have to go well for the Bucs to win.

    Mistakes can never be afforded.
If any of those areas falter, the Bucs lose.
This team is not good enough to have a breakdown in any one area.

Some other teams can cover their mistakes.
    Not our Pirates.
And THAT is why I just dont have much faith in this team for the long haul.

  288. SJB says:

I think he’s so in love with that insanely large wad of gum he’s gnawing on, he doesn’t realize there is a game being played..or even care.

  289. Jandy says:

Russell Martin…no so washed up after all…Cutch…over his slump :)

  290. Long season and a long way to go.
    A lot can happen.
No one ever won a championship in April.
Just gotta keep it all in perspective.

  291. theplanisworking says:

And I as I type the above, Martin and Cutch go long!!!

    Go Bucs !

  292. Eric Bowser says:

DANG huge HR by CUTCH too

3 for 3… is he heating up

  293. pattonbb says:

I like Correia, but he only pitched into the 7th inning ONE time after May 10th last year. ONE TIME.

Hope he does well this year.

  294. Jandy says:

    I agree Playoffs, he’s limited…very…in his options.

  295. Ermine says:

I think we might have found a catcher.

  296. No wonder DK stays away from here these days ;)

  297. JRay3 says:

Disappointing that we are wasting another solid offensive performance 5 runs in five innings and still trail by a few due to CH napping and poor starting pitching digging another huge hole. JMac should have been removed at 4-3.

Nice to see Martin raking and Cutch getting going.

  298. pattonbb says:

    right on Jandy!

  299. Jandy says:

    Can Russell Martin pitch?

  300. The Gunner says:

JMac will give it all back in the bottom of the 5th

  302. Jandy says:

    shhhh! ;)
    Don’t poke the bear ;X

  303. Bob Hasis says:

If you are afraid to ask, and have to ask, then you shouldn’t. It is all being said just above.
    But I’ll give you a clue;
    Player positioning

  304. Jandy says:

  305. Bob Hasis says:

Kind of my inference a moment ago

  306. Jandy says:

wash YOUR mouth out with cheese!

  307. Milo Hamilton says:

So, how long before those two runs are wiped out ?

  308. Jandy says:

  309. I’ll take 100 on the OVER

  310. Jandy says:

OK….since player bashing is the norm these days, I’ma blast Pedro. Had he stopped two of those drives down the third base line…we might have a tie game.

    There…now I feel better!

  311. Jandy says:

    lol you peckerhead

  312. SJB says:

Gotta be a tough job to sit there helpless, without options, or answers and stare off blindly into space as everything implodes around you. He’s like a super hero…

  313. Jandy says:

    Barmes is fine.

Pitching is already overworked…JMac has to do his time…
    Player positioning…like Pedro?

  314. Milo Hamilton says:

  315. theplanisworking says:

    ::thwap thwap::

  316. Eric Bowser says:

Allow me for a second to dream…

If Marte and Martin can keep their strong hitting in the 1-2 spot AND McCutchen catches fire (which I think he’s hopefully starting tonight), then I like to see a lot of RBI off the bat of McCutchen.

    Marte – Martin – McCutchen – Jones – Sanchez – Walker – Alvarez – Barmes

Just imagine #2 — what this lineup could look like if they had a SS that could hit.

  317. He could have at least pulled them into orbit.

  318. SJB says:

Not if they make a pitching change. I know…sounds stupid, right?

  319. Jandy says:

    3 up and 3 down…

  320. theplanisworking says:

Do you win something for that wager? ;)

  321. Jandy says:

Zactly! Even stopping them gives you a chance to get runners out the next batter up.

  322. Bob Hasis says:

Jandy, he is not quick, he stands flat-footed and hence has no range

  323. JohnH says:

Dance moms is over what did I miss? Kidding

  324. Jandy says:

    scary, huh?

  325. SJB says:

Jeff King would have had at least one of them.

  326. Eric Bowser says:

Yeah, are they really going into next season with Mercer or d’Arnaud as the starter?

  327. Patrick(ri) says:

So far, this team has shown a truly remarkable resilience. I am not sure it can cover all weaknesses, but it does keep you checking in during Storage War commercial breaks.

  328. Jandy says:

while Barmes IS quick and has good range. That’s why I blast Pedro lol

  329. Eric Bowser says:

    nice 5th inning for JMAC.

  330. Jandy says:

    ouch! :P

  331. JRay3 says:

Not being argumentative but a lot of times he was pulled by manager decision and not pitch count. He was pulled about ten or so times at 67-86 pitches.

He just seemed like a guy Clint was happy to get six innings from.

  332. SJB says:

Ah, the mantra of a true Pirates believer. “If, If, If, If…” ;)

  333. JohnH says:

Who are the available shortstops both internally and externally. Gulp Trade for someone. Dont hate me

  334. Milo Hamilton says:

I suspect Hurdle will say that Jeanmar Gomez on a 70 pitch limit tomorrow & the pen already stretched thin are the reason he stuck with McDonald so long.

I’ll remind him that they have days off Thursday & Monday, will need only 4 starters til next weekend, and have fresh arms (Morris, Contreras) joining the ranks.

  335. Jandy says:

That’s what I’m talkin about!! Grrrr!!!!

  336. JohnH says:

    could, should, would

  337. SJB says:

This just in: Hell has frozen over.

  338. Bob Hasis says:

You can’t have a slow runner between #1 and #3 – Walker must bat second

  339. SJB says:

Only once you’ve reached the 7th level of consciousness young Jedi.

  340. Jandy says:

    Can I have Cap’n Morgan’s with that?

  341. Bob Hasis says:

    This sounds fine to me!

  342. SJB says:

How’d you know? That’s what I’m having right now.

  343. Your right. This team is terrible. One or two games does make an entire season.

  344. Jandy says:

Well now, lookit that..Inge on base :)

  345. Milo Hamilton says:

If Tabata doesn’t hit into a DP, he’s going to double switch Marte out.

  346. SJB says:

Logic is banned here. Besides, it’s still April. I told my boss that the other day and he gave me the evil eye.

  347. Patrick(ri) says:

I am back. american Hoggers is insultingly stupid.

  348. Eric Bowser says:

The list of free agents is terrible.

Maybe the Rockies get stupid and offer to deal Troy Tulowitzki for Alen Hansen and a pitcher like Luis Heredia…. one can hope for a miracle.

  349. Jandy says:

    I love that stuff!

  350. JRay3 says:

  351. Jandy says:

    Milo…you darn near jinxed them

  352. pattonbb says:

Did anyone really think Tabata would come through there? Anyone???

  353. Eric Bowser says:

lol… there’s a break for Pirates… need Marte to launch one

  354. Eric Bowser says:

You can’t see me but I DON’T have my hand up.

  355. Jandy says:

    hope but expect..

  356. Jandy says:

that’s cuz yer sittin on ‘em!

  357. Bob Hasis says:

Oh Dear Jandy, they play the left side as though they were in quick sand

  358. Jandy says:

    nice call, eric lol

  359. Milo Hamilton says:

  360. JRay3 says:

How about that it’s a Marte Parte…3 run jimmy jack and Bucs retake lead.

  361. Jandy says:

    That was freakin outta there!

  362. Patrick(ri) says:

This kid isunreal. And he is basically a rookie!

  363. Eric Bowser says:

    terrible pitch… Marte is GREAT

  364. Jandy says:

    aha! There it is :)

  365. JRay3 says:

    I’ll second that

  366. pattonbb says:

    Tie game!!!!!

  367. theplanisworking says:

  368. theplanisworking says:

  369. Jandy says:

OK guys, go back to watching Dance Moms and Storage Wars…go ahead :P

  370. Patrick(ri) says:

If mcDonald wins this game, Clint will get my vote for Mgr of the year.

  371. JohnH says:

I went downstairs to check on the dog. Does this mean I have to stay down there?

  372. Eric Bowser says:

I’ll take credit for that HR by Marte….

  373. pattonbb says:

oops…I tried to cheat us a run…8-7 good guys.

  374. Eric Bowser says:

Yeah… get your leash and stay there…

  375. Jandy says:

Awwww Bob called me Dear :)

  376. JohnH says:

dance moms is over and the wife asked if I wanted to watch storage wars. lol

  377. Jandy says:

That’s what I’m saying…and some nights..Pedro DOES have them…but not tonight when we NEED him to

  378. Patrick(ri) says:

Nope. This is more fun than blasting wild Texas pigs.

  379. Bob Hasis says:

A great break Tabby being called safe. Now is the time for great defense, strong relief and astute managing.

Let’s watch and see if all or any of that happens

  380. JohnH says:

I am wearing a dog collar right now but that is for the bedroom not downstairs

  381. JRay3 says:

Hard to believe that JMac is line for the Win if bullpen can hold this.

  382. pattonbb says:

  383. Milo Hamilton says:

  384. Patrick(ri) says:

Talk about a ss who can hit!

  385. JRay3 says:

Well that lead was short lived, good grief can we get anybody out.

  386. Eric Bowser says:

My GOODNESS, can anyone on the Pirates pitch against this team?!?

  387. Jandy says:

Remember this is a G rated blog ;)

  388. Eric Bowser says:

    I’m SERIOUS… get Melancon to pitch 2 innings (6-7) and Grilli (8-9)…

  389. Jandy says:

    you got it!

  390. annnnnnnnnnnnnnd it’s gone…

  391. theplanisworking says:

What does the G stand for?

  392. Boise Bucco says:

Lol I was just typing that Mazzaro usually only gets into games that the Bucs are losing…guess he felt out of place with a lead

  393. Jandy says:

Well, just don’t count these guys out. They’re fighting.
But I will say, the camera was on JMac and he looks awful…his head is very messed up.
Get the guy some kinda help…

  394. Bob Hasis says:

How in the world did Mazzaro pre-empt our solid bullpen? Oh that’s right, CH called that move

  395. Boise Bucco says:

Seconded. I’d even accept Hughes and some ground balls

  396. pattonbb says:

I look forward to the day that Ryan Braun tries to catch a Gerrit Cole fastball with his ribs.

  397. JohnH says:

It help with my sleep apnea.

  398. Jandy says:

That was as freaky as it gets. And STILL almost got the out.

Darn, I gotta get to bed. 4 am isn’t far away…I need a bit of shut eye.
Now listen, keep the faith,, they need GOOD vibes.

I go to bed knowing they are still in this game….night lunatics!

  399. Milo Hamilton says:

Vin Mazzaro obviously has dinner reservations in Allentown Friday night.

  400. Boise Bucco says:

Just so I know, when everybody found out that Mazarro was coming in for the 6th, did you all get that “well, that lead won’t last” feeling that I got?

Seriously, I don’t know who makes the calls on what pitcher comes in, but that guy sucks at it.

  401. Bob Hasis says:

    Guess not

  402. Eric Bowser says:

    Why not use Morris?

Hurdle’s dependence on veterans is mind numbing…

  403. Bob Hasis says:

    CH is the manager

  404. Boise Bucco says:

Nice to see Morris back up for 10 minutes. He’ll shut down the Brewers and his reward will be another bus ticket to Indy.

  405. Eric Bowser says:

DP by Inge… look at that pitching by Morris to setup Weekes

  406. Boise Bucco says:

Maybe he could just stick to writing out the lineup. I can never get my handwriting to look as good as his with dry-erase, maybe it’s just a talent.

  407. Eric Bowser says:

    whew… Gaby Sanchez!!!

  409. JRay3 says:

Nice work turned in by the newbie Bryan Morris to get out of tough situation. Time for some more bats.

  410. Bob Hasis says:

Inge fielded that ball on the SS side of second; guess it was too far out of Barmes range

  411. NC_Bob says:

Morris will stay and Mazzaro will be sent down (I hope).

  412. JRay3 says:

Cutch rips the ball for his fourth hit of the night….4-4…good to see him get his groove back.

  413. Bob Hasis says:

Now DON’T try and steal Cutch – PLEASE

  414. What if Hurdle gives him the steal sign?

  415. Eric Bowser says:

    I hope you are right.

  416. Bob Hasis says:

    Then he’ll be out

  417. Milo Hamilton says:

    Now he should.

  418. Milo Hamilton says:

Who’s this pitcher ? Looks like he has a future.

  419. JohnH says:

Just a random question. When do they do random drug testing in the majors?

  420. The Gunner says:

Where on earth did Root Sports find this unprofessional Katie O’Malley chick????

  421. Eric Bowser says:

This isn’t baseball…. way too many balls flying out of park.

  422. theplanisworking says:

That Brewer guy, (Bernie Brewer??) is going to have a sore butt after sliding down that chute all the time………..

  423. Milo Hamilton says:

    I believe it’s random.

  424. If only Pedro could hit like Betancort…

  425. Eric Bowser says:

    …his approach sucks

  426. Bob Hasis says:

If only Pedro could hit. PERIOD

  427. There is a lot about his game that needs to be “fixed”

  428. Bob Hasis says:

Now Playoffs, there would have been an opportunity to pinch-hit with Fort and use Martin at third. That would be called managing – you see what I mean

  429. JohnH says:

just wondering if the sudden hitting of certain people happens right after the test.

  430. Eric Bowser says:

Well, OT for Minnesota-Chicago and St.Louis-Los Angeles – so tuning out of Pirates game for a bit. If this series is any indication, I’ll only miss an inning of softball.

  431. JohnH says:

thought It was take your grand daughter to work day for Tek

  432. JD says:

Martin may have equaled Hot Rod’s caught stealings and HR’s from all of last year in just the month of April.

  433. pattonbb says:

    his hat

  434. pattonbb says:

Marte with a hit…..come on Martin!

  435. JohnH says:

Cant believe the Yankees didn’t resign him

  436. You should contact the front office and submit an application.

  437. Boise Bucco says:

    Watson’s about 2 innings late

  438. Bob Hasis says:

Playoff I give you more credit than that, to offer up such a weak reply

  439. Bob Hasis says:

    More astute managing

  440. Milo Hamilton says:

Jean Segura, wasn’t she in Guys & Dolls ?

  441. Sorry, Hurdle told me to write that.

  442. Eric Bowser says:

    Well that was fun.

Chicago and St. Louis win in OT at just about the same time.

    Nice, still in 8th inning…

    Sucks, two on though…

  443. Eric Bowser says:

    yeah… about that

    3-R HR by Rickie Weekes….

    12-8 Brewers…

Real STUPID…. really really STUPID to have Watson (lefty) pitching against RH.

Hurdle’s handling of bullpen cost team game.

  444. Inside, Inside, Inside, then out over the plate, 3-run jack, ballgame, good night for good tonight folks!

  445. Naje says:

You guys just won’t let Hurdle breathe…

How about Pedro Alvarez and his 5 for 35 showing so far this season with RISP? And tonight a popout to 2nd with the bases loaded and one out and a double play with 1st and 2nd and one out.

He’s the lineup’s version of James McDonald. I’m a little more confident that he’ll find his game at some point…JMac? not so sure. But Alvarez draws an awful lot of negative attention to himself with his inability to hit with RISP.

  446. Patrick(ri) says:

Weeks was batting .150 or so when this game started. Thi place is cursed.

  447. Hell Unleashed says:

    That’s elementary my dear Watson.

  448. Boise Bucco says:

So maybe 6th inning Watson doesn’t give up that dinger…

  449. Patrick(ri) says:

Pedro is a mixed blessing, for sure.

  450. pattonbb says:

  451. Boise Bucco says:

Haha man they’re falling apart now

  452. theplanisworking says:

Just came back from watching hockey, and basketball, and reading Dejan’s Wednesday column.

    BOOM! Weeks 3 run hr.

Might be time to check out on demand.
    Or the cartoon network……

  453. Boise Bucco says:

Shut up now they’re stealing bases uncontested? Someone’s cheekbone needs more baseball in it

  454. Patrick(ri) says:

It looks like hughes could use some Indy time. Bad year, so far.

  455. Naje says:

Come on, man… These pitchers have been getting jacked all night. Someone has to make the pitches. Hurdle’s got an extended bullpen and tonight was the 2nd stringer’s night to come through and they didn’t hold up their end.

How about harping on Alvarez and his popout to 2nd with the bases loade… or GIDP with two guys on and one out.

Everybody contributed to this loss…Jones misplaying a ball in the outfield… and did I mention Alvarez? You can’t just run Wilson, Melancon and Grilli out there every night.

  456. The UNDER wins yet again.
