Pittsburgh sports talk with the Trib columnist

On location: Senators 2, Penguins 1, 2 OTs, Game 3

By Dejan Kovacevic | Trib Total Media

OTTAWA — Looking ahead to faceoff …

Game 3: Penguins vs. Ottawa Senators, Stanley Cup playoffs, second round

Series: Penguins, 2-0.

Time: 7:40 p.m.

Site: Scotiabank Place, Ottawa

TV, radio: NBC Sports Network, CBC (Canada), RDS (Quebec), WXDX-FM 105.9

Here is the official live box score.

Here is TribLIVE’s Penguins page. Rob Rossi, Josh Yohe and I are covering.

UPDATE 1:11 p.m.: Some notes from this morning’s skates … Joe Vitale won’t play tonight because he’s unavailable, Dan Bylsma announced, which was striking in and of itself. Bylsma wouldn’t say who will replace him, but Tanner Glass came off the ice with most of the regulars — for a change — and spoke as if he likely will play. … If Glass plays, let that strengthen the growing notion that Jussi Jokinen is hurt. Because he probably is. … Very strong indication that Mark Eaton will replace Deryk Engelland, as I’d expressed hope would happen in the Sunday column.

Some videos I took this morning, beginning with Bylsma …

And Tomas Vokoun, also discussing the crowd factor …

And Daniel Alfredsson, on why the Senators won’t quit …

I’ll be part of WPXI-TV’s pregame show tonight, live at 6:39 p.m.

  1. Brian says:

I’m not sure if he is hurt but he doesn’t play well with less than top notch talent.

  2. theplanisworking says:

    LETS GO PENS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Brandie says:

HIPPOSTER!!!!!!! Getting Ready For The Crosby Show. Bring me a Pudding Pop!!

  4. theplanisworking says:

You goof!!! Hippos dont have Pudding Pops! ;)

I will be back later. Have to do some shoppin’ for the Pond.

Have a groovy Hippo Day, Brandie!

  5. theplanisworking says:

I thought we were playing the Astros?
With those orange unis, they look like the Giants.

  6. theplanisworking says:

Enough to scar me while I shop!

  7. Sarah says:

    Unavailable? WTH does that mean?
    Passport issues maybe?

  8. Sarah says:

And I have been feeling since early Rd 1 that JJ is hurt.
Possibly that knee hit and end of Game 1.

  9. Pucknutz says:

    GO PENS!!

  10. Dave G says:

    Let’s Go Pens!

  11. Officer Mancuso says:

Go Pens! A city and its diaspora takes vicarious pride in your work.

  12. JohninOshkosh says:

05/19/2013 4:00 EDT temperature (Fahrenheit) Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (per Google) 63 degrees

01/27/2013 (Dejan’s visit) Low Temperature (Fahrenheit) Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (per Google) -25 degrees

Difference in temperature in 105 days: 88 degrees!

    How’s that for spring!

  13. Vette60 says:

Interesting info there DK that Jussi may be hurt and Vitale is “unavailable”….

Looking forward to the drop of the puck….got the DVR all fired up and set the bonus record time to the 1 hour mark tonight! Looking forward to a Pens win. As I mentioned in the earlier thread, think the Sens could get a little too emotional and start doing some silly stuff – if that happens, I hope the Pens’ PP will rise the the occasion and crush them!

Is Spezza set to go tonight? Hope the Pens take advantage of that and Orpik or Murray get a nice clean hit on him to let him know that he is now in the 2nd round of the playoffs!

    Let’s go PENS!

    Take care all,
    Randy in RVA.

DK: ‘Unavailable’ is hockey parlance for injured.

  14. Drew71 says:

Pretty good, chippy hockey game going on right now. Tied at 2.

During breaks, all they seem to do is talk about Sid Crosby.

    Seek the Sid.

  15. Brandie says:

Bring me the mustache of Paul MacLean.

  16. BillyBaduka says:

    LET’S GO PENS!!!!

  17. Bizrow says:

    They are wise

    He’s the best

  18. Papa Croz says:

  19. JohninOshkosh says:

    C’mon Rangers!

  20. Eric Bowser says:

We’ve seen how teams with outstanding speed (Leafs/Isles) were able to push the Penguins and Bruins but Senators and Rangers just can’t match it so Pittsburgh and Boston are having an easier time in the second round.

  21. JohninOshkosh says:

Have no idea how those Nokia phones are but love the ad.

Said to elderly woman “Aren’t you a little young to have an iPhone?”

Love these phone wars. Harken back to my high school days when the kids would argue Chevy v Ford.

Put a fork in the Rangers. They’re done.

  22. theplanisworking says:

    Maybe the Rangers are done.

In the first round, the Caps had 2 games to none, and 3 games to two leads.
Lundquist then shut them out 2 games in a row.

Lundquist and Quick are the remaining 2 goalies that can steal a series all by themselves.

Love that phone commercial too. :)

  23. Brandie says:

    Evening Hipposter!

  24. Sarah says:

I think Bos come out of this series. King Henry is great but his boys cannot score….

  25. Vette60 says:

    Thanks DK…

Figured as much…hopefully, Vitale will be available later in the series…think the Pens have the depth to deal with things like this…

    Randy in RVA.

  26. Sarah says:

Hank can’t steal this one, I’m afraid.

  27. Brandie says:

Proves the point about line ups that look great on paper but cannot execute where and when it counts.

  28. Drew71 says:

I used to hear that word a lot when I was single. M

And then again now that I’m married.

  29. Eric Bowser says:

    Expected Pens lineup….

    Kunitz – Crosby – Dupuis
    Neal – Malkin – Iginla
    Cooke – Sutter – Morrow
    Glass – Adams – Kennedy

    Orpik – Martin
    Eaton – Letang
    Murray – Niskanen

  30. Eric Bowser says:

Since Crosby had the hat trick and attention is on Jason Spezza, I’m thinking Malkin has one of those physically dominating games to just show that he’s the most dominant player in the NHL when he’s on top of his game.

  31. theplanisworking says:

    Evening, Brandie! :)

  32. Eric Bowser says:

If this post-season has been any indication, we’ll probably hear of changes about 10 minutes before the game and then they’ll be back to the original expected lineup as the puck drops.

  33. theplanisworking says:

Yeah, Boston is a little tougher than the Caps.
And, Boston wont diasappear like Ovechkin did. ;)

  34. Arriba Wilver says:

Do you think he can, with the shoulder problem?

  35. MadTurk says:

Pens will have their work cut out for them, DK just perdicted a 4 to 2 win. OUCH!!!

  36. Brandie says:

As long as there is the proper mix of physical and common sense…my concern is always dumb penalties because of too much emphasis on the physicality and not enough on the use of hockey intelligence.

  37. Brandie says:

    What’s shakin’ Bacon?

  38. Arriba Wilver says:

    (He’ll never learn)

  39. Sarah says:

I see Bos coming out of this series, perhaps very easily….

  40. MadTurk says:

We may have to buy some duck tape and apply it to him if this continues.

  41. Eric Bowser says:

Yes, I think he can do it. All about the mental toughness to do it.

He’s shown flashes in spurts, hasn’t done it over a full 60 minutes and that’s what should be scary for Senators and remaining playoff teams.

  42. theplanisworking says:

I am a vegetarian, silly. I eat grass.
But the pigs across the way are fun to watch. ;)

  43. Eric Bowser says:

A full 60 minute game without an stupidity would be nice.

  44. JohninOshkosh says:

Anybody know who is announcing ? Kenny Albert ?

  45. Brandie says:

I eat vegetarian as well. :-)

  46. Brandie says:

From your lips to Disco’s ears. (Or is that to the Hockey God’s ears?)

  47. theplanisworking says:

But tonight, we should eat Senators! ;) 8-)

  48. Brandie says:

    Pass the A-1! :-)

  49. JohninOshkosh says:

I’m going on record before the game for accountability,

I would start MAF tonight in goal.

  50. Sarah says:

Spot on Eric. But, when was the last time t,hey did that?

  51. theplanisworking says:

    ……and the Tums. ;)

  52. Sarah says:

DK is our suspicion that JJ was injured at end of Game 1 on target? That was a nasty hit…..

    DK: I think so.

  53. js63 says:

I love Malkin, but if he is the most dominant player in the NHL when he is on top of his game, then he needs to make it a habit to be on top of his game more often.

  54. Sarah says:

Brandie not even sure they’re great on paper…..
They are all about Hank….and winning low scoring games….

  55. js63 says:

If it is Kenny Albert, at least we won’t have to deal with his obvious excitement when the other team (who happens to be from NYC area) does something, such as when we played the Islanders. If the Rangers somehow find their way past the Bruins, Albert will be insufferable.

  56. Sarah says:

    That would require maturity.
    He is not there yet.

  57. js63 says:

Why chance that? He was as bad in goal for 2 games as any playoff goalie I have ever seen. I never saw so many soft, horrific goals in such a short amount of time. I used to love MAF, but his head leaves his body in the playoffs lately. He should only play in case of a Vokoun injury, or in the unlikely event that Vokoun plays at least 2 awful games in a row.

  58. Eric Bowser says:

Pens twitter account has D pairings as

    Orpik – Martin
    Niskanen – Letang
    Murray – Eaton

  59. theplanisworking says:

Well, the series is in Ottawa for the next 2 games. Never underestimate the importance of the final line change.

Much has been made of the Sens not having enough to play with the Pens. I dont know about that, but I do have to question McLeans strategy so far. I fully expected him to disrupt the Pens, especially in the neutral zone, going after players to get them off their game. That hasnt happened so far in this series.

Ottawa has to try something different tonight. I look for relentless forechecking. I look for them to dump the puck and make our D work harder. I look for more physicality on Crosby.

For the Pens, like Eric said above, they have to play 60 minutes of smart hockey. But as we have seen all too often these playoffs, dumb penalties and turnovers come at the worst time. Crosby has been Crosby this series, hopefully he continues his great play.

These 2 game sin Ottawa will show how good Vokoun is. I think he will be a calming influence for the team. I just dont see Fleury returning unless TV implodes. Anderson seems spooked by our O, it will be important to pressure him some more.

I look for a tighter game tonight, mainly because Ottawa is desperate. If they cant win tonight, they are toast.

That said, I see a 3-2 victory tonight. Pens just have too much going for them.

    GO PENS !!!

  60. Brandie says:

    Please Skate Responsibly. :-)

  61. JohninOshkosh says:

Well I could be wrong, js; That’s why I posted it before the game. If I’m wrong, I’m wrong. But if I’m right I don’t want to say it after the fact. But here’s why I think this:

    1. This is a much bigger game for the Sens. The crucial game for the Pens is game 4. If TV looks bad tonight I would not want MAF considered for game 4.

    2. I would rather have MAF get a start to rest TV and to give MAF an opportunity to rebuild his confidence in a lower pressure game. Was not that impressed with TV in game 2. I am not in panic mode by any means but I believe, when his head is right, MAF is the better goalie.

    3. I certainly understand starting TV tonight. But if the plan is to give MAF another chance in the playoffs, and I certainly do not know if that is the plan or not, then tonight seems to be the best night for MAF to test the hot waters again.

  62. And leave in on there through baseball season.

  63. theplanisworking says:

A public servicw announcement from our resident camper ! ;)

  64. theplanisworking says:

Who the heck is Rick Beckam???

  65. JohninOshkosh says:

Announcers are Rick Peckham and former University of Wisconsin Badger Brian Engblom.

  66. MadTurk says:

  67. Milo Hamilton says:

Longtime voice of the Hartford Whalers Rick Peckham.

  68. Brandie says:

Iceburgh says…Only you can prevent stupid penalties.

  69. theplanisworking says:

Didnt know who he was, Milo. Thank you for that.

  70. JohninOshkosh says:

    Whew doggy, what a start!

  71. theplanisworking says:

  72. Barb says:

I agree. Just a great fast start. A lot of scoring chances for the Pens.

  73. Sarah says:

I believe at this point the plan is to use MAF to spell TV. He’s not played this many games in a row for a couple years.

If mgmt really wanted to give MAF another chance, he’d have been in by now.

It’s TVs net til he poops the bed I think.

  74. JohninOshkosh says:

    Penguins power play coming up…

  75. theplanisworking says:

Ottawas arena has to be the brightest in the NHL. The seats are illuminated as much as the ice…………. a rarity in the league.

  76. Eric Bowser says:

Good start for both teams, Pens had 3 good chances but no goals.

    PP time after tv break.

  77. JohninOshkosh says:

Kyle Turris gives TV a cheap snow shower.

  78. Iceman says:

Can someone please tell the tv announcer that Sutter and Neal are not the same person and wear different numbers. Second game in a row that the guy has gotten them mixed up multiple times. It is annoying.

  79. Brandie says:

    Sloppy! Little to no preparation.

  80. Brandie says:

Being a one trick pony does not get you far in the playoffs…definitely a different world.

  81. Milo Hamilton says:

When I first started doing hockey a wise man told me before even learning numbers learn which way each guy shoots, right or left. It eliminates half the players. For example if all you see is a 4 & the guy shoots right you know right away it can’t be Orpik. You should never mix up Neal & Sutter. One shoots left & the other right.

  82. TJ says:

So glad to see Glass back in the lineup. Guess he needs to get on the score sheet some how

  83. Eric Bowser says:

    Tanner Glass….

  84. TJ says:

Wow did Alfy miss a golden chance.

If Glass does anything tonight I hope its drop the gloves at some point

  85. TJ says:

    WTF is Crosby doing

  86. TJ says:

  87. Barb says:

Let’s see if we can score on the PP in the 2nd period.

  88. Eric Bowser says:

Clean sheet of ice for the power play to start the second period, hopefully they’ll skate and pass a little better than they did in first period.

  89. Jandy says:

Lots of nasty hits that first period. Time for someone to give Spezza a nice one. Neil didn’t mind popping Sid in the jaw…

  90. Barb says:

Absolutely. He needs to be put on his wallet.

  91. Jandy says:

Amen, Eric, hubby is tired of me cussing, already

  92. theplanisworking says:

    After one Hippo………… ;)

Very odd first period. No real flow to the game. Both teams had some chances, Pens actually had the better chances.

Without jinxing the team, I now think that the Sens canNOT hang much longer. They just seem to be lacking.

Need to capitalize on this early PP.

  93. TJ says:

These smoking commercials freak me out. I wish you had the option to fast forward if you are not a smoker.

  94. Jandy says:

Amen Hipposter. We had some very good chances, Anderson made some good saves

  95. TJ says:

Pens weathered a storm or a slight drizzle; and still had the better scoring chances. Letang needs to stay out of that crap; seems like the Sens know he’s and easy target to bait into a stupid penalty.

  96. Jandy says:

Yeah kinda makes your stomach flop…ugh

  97. Jandy says:

    Wise man.

  98. Jandy says:

he sure is beating Sid on face offs tho

  99. TJ says:

Just curious; is anyone else curious why Bylsma is not a COY finalist? Seems like a couple Pens were snubbed for finalists.

  100. JohninOshkosh says:

I hate em. Especially watching them with my 6 year old daughter. Scares her…which i guess is the point.

  101. theplanisworking says:

    Jandy!!!! Welcome! :)

  102. Jandy says:

    Hipposter, thank you :)

  103. Jandy says:

which corner is Brandie hiding out in?

  104. theplanisworking says:

She was here earlier………. I think she went back to camping. ;)

  105. theplanisworking says:

    Anytime, Mother Teresa. ;)

  106. Pucknutz says:

Ya they just don’t call it any more!!!

  107. Jandy says:

  108. Brandie says:

Evening, Jandy. Out walking the dog!

  109. Brandie says:

    Boy are my ears burning!

  110. SJB says:

Sorry but 5 on 3 and then 5 on basically 2 1/2 and you still don’t score…your gonna lose. Just gave them all the momentum in the world.

  111. theplanisworking says:

Maybe it was the dog? ;)

  112. Jandy says:

Ahh yes our four legged friends need attention too :)

  113. theplanisworking says:

    PP looked bad there…………..

  114. Jandy says:

yeah what the heck happened to our PP?

  115. Brandie says:

She is smart, but not evil, though I wonder sometimes.

  116. theplanisworking says:

    It went for a walk with Brandie’s dog……….. ;)

  117. Brandie says:

Power play is getting lazy and sloppy. Really, Anderson is not this good.

  118. Sarah says:

I for one am not curious.

  119. Jandy says:

    sure looks like it!

  120. Jandy says:

  121. Sarah says:

Perhaps this is the loose game we were afraid of after Game 1….

  122. Barb says:

Not according to the announcers. They are certainly having a love fest for Anderson. Ugh.

  123. Brandie says:

    Let’s hope not.

  124. SJB says:

DK already working on his “and Anderson was the difference in the win” story for tomorrow. Doesn’t look like the Pens stars are going to be the difference if they can somehow pull out a win tonight. I’m putting my bets on Adams scoring if any Pens do at this point. Sens in rope a dope mode right now but will surely score the 1st of this contest at this rate.

Pens face off percentage in the dumpster in this series and Jokinen not playing?

Pens don’t score on this PP and it’s all the Sens game to lose.

  125. theplanisworking says:

I would say this PP is very important. If we dont score here, it will be trouble. Have to cash in our opportunities.

Brandie, please have your dog give our PP back. ;)

  126. SJB says:

Got Sens taking cheap shots at you and you don’t make them pay then you deserve to be punched in the back of the head IMO.

  127. Jandy says:

We look like a bunch of bumbling idiots

  128. theplanisworking says:

    I resemble that remark…………

  129. Barb says:

  130. SJB says:

Sens will score on the PP

  131. Jandy says:

    dumb penalty by Crankshaft

  132. Sarah says:

Things are breaking down. Another penalty now…

  133. Jandy says:

    nah….not even close!

  134. Barb says:

The Sens are starting to get under their skin. They need to stop it!

  135. theplanisworking says:

    just ask my ex-wife. ;)

  136. Jandy says:

    she don’t know jack ;)

  137. Brandie says:

    Wrestling her right now.

  138. Jandy says:

why did Murray go back to the dressing room?

  139. Barb says:

He blocked a shot and it hit him in the forearm. Hope it isn’t broken.

  140. theplanisworking says:

    “Upper Body Injury”.

Which only narrows it down to 300 injuries………… ;)

  141. theplanisworking says:

    +1 paw……..

  142. Jandy says:

    someone twist his..t..err.. n/m

  143. Iceman says:

Took a shot right off the wrist. Also the reason for taking the penalty. Didn’t seem to be able to grip the stick with both hands.

  144. Brandie says:

    Getting Schmutzy.

  145. Iceman says:

    What was Karleson’s penalty for?

  146. Jandy says:

  147. Jandy says:

    Thanks Iceman…ouchies

  148. Jandy says:

    for being a Senator?

  149. Iceman says:

Kinda what it looked like to me.

  150. Eric Bowser says:

    Karlsson – embellishment (diving)

  151. Jandy says:

but they all do that ;)

  152. SJB says:

Pens not getting any second chances. Not getting bodies to the net. Guys like Morrow, Iginla, Kunitz and Cooke need to get a dirty goal or two.

  153. Jandy says:

    And Crank is back

  154. Jandy says:

  155. Jandy says:

Crank is being too easy on Neil

  156. theplanisworking says:

    TK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  157. Brandie says:

    TK love!!!!!!!!…

  158. Iceman says:

    Seems like a weak call.

  159. Eric Bowser says:

Matt Cooke is having a great playoffs…

    TK shoots…. TK Scores!!!!

  160. Jandy says:

TK with a goal and the Walrus isn’t happy

  161. SJB says:

Alright TK! Knew it wasn’t going to be Sid or Geno

Next game they need to sit Iginla for Jokinen. Sounds stupid…don’t think so.

  162. Iceman says:

TK is deserving every min he gets right now. Wicked shot.

  163. Brandie says:

    Wow!!!!!!!!! Finally!

  164. Jandy says:

Cookie has a ton of hits. And clean ones :)

  165. theplanisworking says:

    throw him a fish…………

  166. Jandy says:

    I don’t think so

  167. Milo Hamilton says:

The Senators are going to pay Tyler Kennedy way too much money this summer.

  168. Jandy says:

  169. Jandy says:

  170. Eric Bowser says:

At even strength, Cooke hasn’t been on the ice for 1 goal against…

  171. Jandy says:

    Bahahahahahaaa! like

  172. Jandy says:

    wow! I hadn’t realized that

  173. theplanisworking says:

If we could get him to stop taking silly penalties, we would be golden

  174. Jandy says:

    Dittos with malkin and neal

  175. theplanisworking says:

    Thank You.

  176. Kevin says:

My plus for the game so far:

+1 to Malkin’s look into the camera after being taken down on a breakaway. Can someone help me figure out what a guy’s gotta do to get a penalty shot?

+1 also to the refs for calling that dive by Karlsson. That guy owns an original copy of the football (soccer) penalty embellishment handbook. Good to see him finally get called on it.

+1 to Craig Anderson. He got pulled last game and the otters stuck with him and he’s been fantastic so far through 2 periods. He is THE only reason the penguins aren’t up 7-0 right now. :D

  177. Kevin says:

Seriously, Bylsma’ decision to bench Kennedy might be one of the best decisions of the playoffs cause he’s been fantastic since.

  178. theplanisworking says:

Well, after 2 periods, I am a confused Hippo.

No flow to this game at all.
Neither team seems to be able to do much.

Late goal by TK looks huge.

I see Ottawa playing ultra-desperate in the 3rd period.
They cannot go down 3-0, if they want to have a chance in this series.

The way both goalies are playing, it may be safe to say goals will be hard to come by………. which of course benefits us.

    GO PENS !!!

  179. Brandie says:

    Fresh legs and fresh perspective.

  180. Brandie says:

I guess this must be the higher gear for the Sens.

  181. Jandy says:

  182. Brandie says:

Indeed! Talk about your higher gear!

  183. theplanisworking says:

Hey you two………… Hippos only have one gear…….. slow. :)

  184. Jandy says:

    sometimes slow is good ;)

  185. theplanisworking says:

In that case, I am great !!!! ;0

  186. Jandy says:

    That’s what I’m talkin’ about ;)

  187. Jandy says:

    wow just wow

  188. Eric Bowser says:

What a save by Vokoun… thankfully that was Neil shooting.

  189. Jandy says:

    and here we go :sigh:

  194. Jandy says:

    Karlsson is extremely frustrated

  195. Jandy says:

and cookie is smilin like a butcher’s dog ;)

  196. theplanisworking says:

Yeah, he can blame Cooke some more……..

  197. Jandy says:

  198. theplanisworking says:

You have to be kidding me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  199. Jandy says:

  200. Jandy says:

    I hate Alfredsson

  201. Jandy says:

How the heck does Alfredsson get in behind you for a SH goal?

  202. mwr says:

That had to be the worst strategy in the history of the game

  203. theplanisworking says:

When you are lazy, very easily.

  204. Eric Bowser says:

You want a reason why I dislike Bylsma… that goal against is why.

  205. Jandy says:

Who should have had Alfredsson, Eric?

  206. mwr says:

They had five offensive guys out there not sure what to do, absolutely stupid coaching

  207. CWalton_67 says:

Exactly what I expected from this team.

  208. theplanisworking says:

    After 3 periods…………………

That goal was a killer. Pens on PP, play a “prevent” defense, and Alfredsson sneaks in untouched for the tying goal. Just unreal.

Now the Pens have to step it up. Have to take the momentum back.

Old rule always applies………….. when you have a team down, and you dont finish them off, bad things happen.

    Time to step it up.

  209. mwr says:

Letang and Malkin should have never been on the ice

  210. SJB says:

Can we all stop the talk about Letang for the Norris already. A great defenseman doesn’t allow a player to go to the net like he did did there. Defenseman of the year my a$$. They lose this game it’s ALL on Letang. He and Karlsson can go get room together for all I care.

  211. J Walter Weatherman says:

I literally can’t think of one good reason why Malkin was on the ice there. I’d like to hear Bylsma’s explanation for that.

  212. mwr says:

Neither Letang or Martin were in position and then Malkin was very lazy and didn’t pick up Alfredson

  213. Matt says:

When Bylsma preaches about a system that keeps the puck in the offensive zone, why does he go to the prevent defense with a man advantage in the closing 1:30?

  214. SJB says:

Letang should have had him. This has nothing to do with Bylsma. This is hockey 101 and Letang failed that class miserably.

  215. J Walter Weatherman says:

Norris often goes to defenseman with best offensive stats. Not saying I agree with that, but that’s way it goes. I think we can all agree that Letang is mediocre defensively.

  216. SJB says:

Don’t blame the forward for not having the first guy in. It’s Letangs job FIRST to pick him up.

  217. mwr says:

The same reason Bylsma never has benched Malkin for one of his 1000 stupid plays or penalties

  218. DJ says:

Totally mixed messages by HC DB cost us that last goal. Team told to play responsibly defensively last 7-8 minutes of game and our one goal will be enough. We get on PP and so who is he sending out? Of course, our top PP line! How about just sending Sid out to take the face-off and have balance of our penalty killers out there (Dupuis, Adams, Cooke)?

  219. J Walter Weatherman says:

Bigger question: if you’re putting a prevent defense on the ice, why is Malkin part of that unit?

  220. J Walter Weatherman says:

  221. mwr says:

Well lets see if this team can bail Bylsma out yet again

  222. SJB says:

It’s a joke of an award, period. It’s supposed to go to the “best defenseman” not the defenseman with the most points. Come out with another award if that’s what they want. Call it the idiot defenseman who can score award, or how about this The Kris Letang Award”.

  223. Jandy says:

  224. J Walter Weatherman says:

Careful SJB. Jandy takes special exception to insults of Letang. He can do no wrong.

  225. SJB says:

At that point they are on the PP and are looking for guys who can force a turnover and maybe get an empty netter, if not score a goal on the PP. At the worst it’s 5 on 5 and the Pens aren’t shorthanded, so why NOT put Malkin out there.

  226. cherokee23 says:

Power play……dump the puck and send 1 forechecker…..that strategy had to come from the bench. The players gotta play, but bylsma the one that put them into passive mode

  227. Dave G says:

    Indescribably stupid.

    Still cant believe it.

How bad do they want this cup?

  228. Matt says:

The Pens only sent 1 player into the Senators zone the entire time with that man advantage. All the rest sat back in a zone prevent porous defense. Agree with you in wondering why he has Malkin playing in that capacity?

  229. SJB says:

“Prevent” This ain’t football. They’ve been playing a solid shutdown defense for most of the last 10 minutes and taking advantage of the Sens press, what’s this 1:30 crap?

  230. DJ says:

Let’s pick it up boys in OT. Vokoun is looking whipped. . . and who wouldn’t? Last few times to his knees it was a good bit before he got to his skates. Let’s do it here and get this one!

  231. SJB says:

    Letang’s an a$$.

  232. Steelag70 says:

The sky is falling, the sky is falling!!!

  233. Jandy says:

no, it’s more about over reaction. sheesh

  234. J Walter Weatherman says:

Wow, Malkin tried to make up for it there.

  235. mwr says:

That is exactly why you dont put Malkin out there. You know the Sens are going to pull the goalie and it will be 5 on 5 so you just put the next line out there and not a mish mash line to go 5 on 5 with 30 seconds left.

  236. Jandy says:

you sound pretty familiar with what an a$$ is

  237. Milo Hamilton says:

How fast can we get Kennedy out there ?

  238. JohninOshkosh says:

I agree. Series over. Cup run over. Just go back to Pittsburgh now and make tee times. Fire the coach and the GM. President Trophy winners Black Hawks should fold it up too. They lost a game.

Oh yeah, Pens haven’t even lost this one yet.

  239. Jandy says:

  240. Jandy says:

  241. Kevin says:

not only did Alfredsson get behind him but there were 2 senators behind malkin on that play… why you have Malkin on the ice at this point I have no idea. If you’re going to play defense for a minute and half on a power play.. I would think you’d put all def out there.

  242. Eric Bowser says:

I’d like to know why Martin and Letang were on, why Crosby was the one coming off before Malkin…

  243. SJB says:

How many of us has see this situation before? One team gets a billion chances to score to start OT and results in nothing, and then the other team get’s their small opportunity and bang, they win. Looking like that now.

  244. Eric Bowser says:

actually, all 5 guys failed and they weren’t exactly placed in good spots.

  245. SJB says:

Iginla needs to score here. If not, lets trade him for Bill Guerin.

  246. Dr Waido says:

    C’mon Pens

  247. Kevin says:

I missed the beginning of OT (was dealing with slight spider problem)… since I been watching it looks like Ottawa has all the momentum. Although Malkin did just generate a good chance.

  248. Milo Hamilton says:

Total combined career playoff overtime goals by Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby – 0.

  249. JohninOshkosh says:

I’ve said it before. I both love and hate playoff overtime hockey.

  250. Jandy says:

well, maybe that can be corrected

  251. Jandy says:

    this is killing me

  252. Kevin says:

son of a.. dupwee hit post D:.. thought that would be the game.

  253. Kevin says:

    so you’re saying they’re due? :D

  254. JohninOshkosh says:

Qualifier is “playoff,” Sid had a famous OT’er in Vancouver. :).

  255. Kevin says:

    getting plenty of chances. :|

  256. Dr Waido says:

Something like that Morrow shot is how this game will end

  257. Kevin says:

Alfredson.. focused or dazed.. hard to tell :\

  258. Dr Waido says:

It’s now WWE match by Sens

  259. Dr Waido says:

    Ouch…that will leave a mark

  260. Jandy says:

    about time someone hits Spezza

  261. Steelag70 says:

Especially when he has been out with a bad back. ;)

  262. Dr Waido says:

    hit him again

  263. Jandy says:

well yeh, the Sens, Neil in particular didn’t have any qualms with hitting sid in the face

  264. Kevin says:

come on pens! we want a mario moment from someone :|

  265. Jandy says:

  266. JohninOshkosh says:

Has any game gone to 2 OT’s in this year’s playoffs ?

  267. Steelag70 says:

  268. JohninOshkosh says:

Any game in the league, I mean.

  269. Jandy says:

  270. Dr Waido says:

    there will be no penalties

  271. Milo Hamilton says:

  272. Jandy says:

Why is Craig Adams on the ice so much all of a sudden? He’s the one should have been on during the last 2 minutes of regulation

  273. Kevin says:

noticed that.. no call on Malkin for the hook.

  274. Dr Waido says:

  275. Kevin says:

    I agree with that sentiment.

  276. Dr Waido says:

talk about a coaching brain fart

  277. Steelag70 says:

    Yes…no 5 OT’s game ala vs the Caps…haha. I go to work early…

  278. JohninOshkosh says:

Thanks. I was too lazy to Google and caught up in the game.

  279. Milo Hamilton says:

Pens haven’t lost a road OT playoff game since 1995 in New Jersey. Neal Broten. Have won 9 straight since.

  280. Kevin says:

Well that one worked that time.. really wish Malkin wouldn’t behind-the-back drop pass in his own zone.

  281. Jandy says:

I just want to smack him lol

  282. JohninOshkosh says:

Me too. Getting tired and blood pressure high at same time! Weird combination.

  283. Dr Waido says:

Sens have blocked a lot of passes this game

  284. theplanisworking says:

    Or I can sit on him……… ;)

  285. Jandy says:

I’m shutting computer, gonna turn this on upstairs. I hope I get some sleep tonight! G’night…go Pens!

  286. JohninOshkosh says:

    I’m glad I’m not a goalie.

    Or a hockey announcer.

    Much respect for both!

  287. theplanisworking says:

This game should already be over by now.
    Very disappointing.

Disco duck lost his feathers tonight.

  288. DJ says:

Sutter needs to go to Gary Roberts’ conditioning school in off season. Being outskated by his older linemates.

  289. Kevin says:

Anyone else feel like the penguins could have won it 5+ times already? (not including the time right before regulation when the penguins decided not to play defense for 1.5 mins)

  290. mwr says:

Not hindsight because I said at the start of the PP but it should have been the third line with Orpik and Martin playing that PP. You knew the Sens would pull the goalie and it would be 5 on 5 and not really a PP so why have your PP unit on the ice???? Very poor decision and lack of strategy by Bylsma.

  291. florida steeler says:

The Sens had two guys open on the play because of laziness by Letang and Malkin. But, once again, Bylsma tries to sit on a lead and it costs him. No rush on the power pay and lazy defense gives up a short handed goal.

  292. SJB says:

Like I said earlier, it’s games like that that usually end up in a loss. For every scoring opportunity not capitalized on, the more your odds for losing go up.

  293. florida steeler says:

    Bylsma’s genius at work–again.

  294. mwr says:

I think both Kunitz and Iginla are having sub par games. Would like to see them trade places and get Iginla with Crosby.

  295. DJ says:

Clearly affecting the older guys more than the younger ones, except Dupuis. Just need Iggy to pick up his puck reaction time a bit, to pretend he is still wearing the “C”.

  296. Kevin says:

meh he lost an edge.. thats not a penalty :|

  297. SJB says:

Awwww, the effing creep got banged up. Scuze me if I don’t feel bad at all for the douche.

  298. Kevin says:

bs.. that guy just jumped on Nisky’s stick.

  299. SJB says:

Here’s the game folks, Pens sh!t the bed on the PP and the Sens will capitalize on theirs.

  300. J Walter Weatherman says:

Tough call. Refs were waiting for something to call on Pens.

  301. SJB says:

Yeah but Bylsma’s an idiot so….

  302. SJB says:

No doubt. Better not to have any PP’s cause you know you’ll get one called on you too if it happens.

  303. Kevin says:

Damn.. oh well get em next game.

  304. J Walter Weatherman says:

Bylsma should get one of the 3 stars for Sens.

  305. theplanisworking says:

This loss was on Disco Duck.

Had a chance to go up 3-0, but now series on.

    PP seemed horrible tonight.

    Oh well, see you Wednesday.

  306. SJB says:

Good going Letang. All on you buddy

  307. Kevin says:

Eaton should have boxed out greening when he lost his stick. He retrieves his stick and Greening crosses the crease and scores.. right?

  308. mwr says:

So now the Senators are back in the series and the older guys will be exhausted from playing and extra 30 miinutes. Way to go Bonehead of a coach…..that has got to be one of the worst strategy moves I have ever seen in all my years watching sports. Cant wait for the tough questions the meek Pittsburgh sports writers will ask about that.

  309. likeabugonarug says:

This is on DB. Playing to not lose on the PP at the end of the 3rd. So what happens? They lose the game. STUPID!

  310. Kevin says:

eh.. we get an extra day.. good and bad. Hopefully penguins have short memories and get good rest.

  311. J Walter Weatherman says:

One last thing. I’d like to see Despres in for Niskanen next game. Niskanen has been absolutely horrible in the playoffs. Good move putting Eaton in for Engelland – leave Eaton in the lineup.

  312. DJ says:

Vokoun was impressive tonight, Hope HC DB doesn’t overthink this and stays with him. Next game is Wednesday so Vokoun will get the extra day, and he will need it.

  313. DJ says:

Agreed. We could use some young legs after this one. How about Vitale (if healthy) or even Bennett for Glass while we are it?

  314. florida steeler says:

A bad effort by the Pens and Bylsma. Niskanen is really bad, Murray is old and slow and Iginla can’t buy a goal. What a give away by Byslma. He always sits on a one goal lead. this could be a devastating loss.

  315. DJ says:

Don’t think sitting on the lead was the problem. We were playing a very responsible defensive game for like the last 7-8 minutes, and looking great at it. In that last PP situation, would have preferred our penalty killers for the last 1:40, or whatever it was.

  316. TJ says:

Both players inserted into the lineup tonight did nothing to help this team. Glass took a dumb penalty in the first; and Eaton was no match on the game winner. No idea why Bylsma decided to insert those 2 into a lineup that had won 4 straight games.

Vokoun looked good tonight but man do I hate how far he gets away from the net when there are players around. Game could have been won man times tonight by the Pens; you just have to put this one on Anderson as he played probably the best game he’s going to play.

  317. TJ says:

Agreed; no idea why you line up with your PP guys when your trying to protect the lead. Absolutely dumb. Malkin and Kunitz in their own world on that tying goal.

  318. SJB says:

When you play an OT game, sometime it’s good to rest a goalie if you have the option, especially an older one like Vokoun. I know people hate to hear it, but if this team is going to win the cup, they will have to get Fleury back in their at some point and Vokoun could use a break after a tough loss that wasn’t his fault to begin with.

  319. SJB says:

Why no blame on Letang? He was the guy who turned his back and forgot about Alfredsson skating right to the net. Letang was the one player with the play in front of him at the time and he’s at least a defenseman (so they say). In order of who effed that one, it should go Letang, Malkin and then Kunitz. Either way, the team for whatever reason decided to have a collective brain fart after playing exceptional defensive hockey for all but that last 30 seconds of the game. How do they even do that? I don’t know.

I’ll be surprised if the Sens don’t capitalize on this and with the next game to even the series.

  320. SJB says:

I thought Eaton played a very good game overall. Just because he was on the ice for the game winner doesn’t take away from his game. I seriously don’t think Engelland would have been a better option.

  321. DJ says:

Don’t disagree we will eventually need Fleury, but with a 3-day break I would not make that move just yet. I did not see any pucks bouncing in tonight on shots from behind our goal. And if Fleury comes in and he is horrible, what then? I say ride Vokoun out. He’ll get plenty of additional rest if we need to turn to Fleury sooner rather than later.

  322. Danch70 says:

How did Eaton lose his stick? I think in one replay t showed a guy ripping it tight out of his hand. Don’t know for sure cause I can’t see it again. But, really, to win the game like that? Shameless.

  323. TJ says:

Kunitz and Malkin both let Alfredsson skate right past them and never looked at him. Kunitz even picked him up at center ice and then pulled off and Alfredsson kept going full speed. No one was looking. Absolutely ridiculous.

  324. TJ says:

I bet ya Engelland doesn’t man handled at the end of the game like Eaton did. But my main question is; why after winning 4 straight games do you put Glass and Eaton into the games? Is Fleury next? Just saying I don’t understand the need to mess with whats been working.

  325. TJ says:

And the Sens should capitalize on this and win game 4. But and this is a very big BUT; you need Andersen to stand on his head again; and you might be playing another man down depending on how bad the Neil injury is. Pens had plenty of chances to score tonight but were just flat out stoned. Just unfortunate that the Pens lose on a goal scored around the net but the goalie is 5 feet away from it.

  326. WVStarship says:

We may have just seen the Pens lose the Stanley Cup tonight. I can’t believe that they (or anyone else) could overcome a loss like that. This was easily the worst loss in franchise history; makes 1993 look tame in comparison. What a downer.

  327. DJ says:

Looks like Martin crossed over to front Karlsson and then appeared to be half-heartedly passing him off to Letang, taking no one himself. Kunitz doing absolutely nothing between Sens’ blue line all the way back to our defensive zone. Malkin just wandering aimlessly between Alfredsson (ahead of him) and another Sens player trailing the play.

  328. DJ says:

Word is that Vitale was not “available” — meaning injured. That explains Glass. Eaton was in because Engelland was below average in Game1 and horrible in Game 2. Personally would have preferred Depres, but we all know HC DB doesn’t trust him as yet, so no need worrying about him getting in.

  329. DJ says:

. . . btw, I have not seen the OT goal again so cannot comment on Eaton specifically on that one (someone commented his stick was grabbed), but I thought he played a pretty solid game tonight.

  330. DJ says:

. . . meant Martin crossed over to front Gonchar, not Karlsson (who was in the box, of course). Brain freeze after you see a play like that one.
