Sunday column: What do Senators have left?

By Dejan Kovacevic | Trib Total Media

OTTAWAThe Sunday column doesn’t quite bury the Senators, but it at least grabs a shovel from the shed.

Here’s our full team coverage.

I’ll call special attention to this Pascal Dupuis centerpiece feature by Kevin Gorman.

We’ll all be headed over — way over, miles over — to Scotiabank Place for both teams’ morning skates today, then report back to you here on the blog.

    Happy Sunday Lunatics!

Guess those border guys let DK & Co. across the border! Looking forward to the game tonight – hope the Pens will keep it up and make it 3-0!

We’ll see if the Sens can kick it up a notch playing at home and if Spezza truly makes an impact – has to be an emotional boost to get one of your best offensive players back, but having not played in so long is mostly likely not in “game shape”. Let’s see how he does after an Orpik hit!

    Let’s go PENS!

    Randy in RVA.

  5. Drew71 says:

Pirates second loss in nine games.

Look out Clint. Foo must be raving.

  6. Drew71 says:

Of COURSE they let em across the border.

    Would YOU search that vehicle?

    Imagine the stink.

    Just wave em on. Fast.

    not ITALY….PA ;-)

  9. Look on the bright side, Drew. The Riverhounds tied the Dutch Lions.

What exactly is the difference between a “Dutch” lion and regular old lion?

  10. Brandie says:

    Crush the Senators!

  11. theplanisworking says:

You dont think the cloud eminating from that vehicle would arouse some suspicions??? ;)

  12. theplanisworking says:

That’s easy. It wears wooden clogs. ;)

  13. Brandie says:

Why, your words alone get 20 Beatnik Coffee House Poetry snaps from me!

  14. theplanisworking says:

    Seconded!!!! ;)

  15. theplanisworking says:

    Hippos cant snap. ;(

  16. Drew71 says:

Another strong seven inning performance by AJ.

He’s been a hard luck pitcher at 3-4, but very good.

ERA 2.57, WHIP 1.10, Batting Average Against .204, averaging 6.3 innings per start, and over 63 innings, 79 SO and 23 BB.

Now that he’s demonstrating that 2012 wasn’t a fluke, I hope the Pirates are quietly whispering in AJ’s ear, how bout one more year?

I know the Yankees $ doesn’t continue after 2013. He’s showing he’s worth the money.

What if he suddenly shows his age? It’s ONLY a one year investment.

Imagine the rotation NEXT season. I have no idea how good Liriano is. But I have a pretty good idea how good Cole will be. Keep AJ at the top and that’s pretty dang solid.

Then other that securing depth, #7 or 8 pitchers, they would not have to consider any unknown risks from the free agent pitching lists.

  17. Brandie says:

OK then, 20 enthusiastic hippo whistles!

  18. Drew71 says:

    Wrong “Dutch”.

They make the chicks pay for their own dinners.

And then expect at least a tie at the end of the night.

  19. theplanisworking says:

Wait a minute………. I thought we were talking about Lions. Now you say Chicks? I am now officially confused……

  20. theplanisworking says:

    Mornin’ Brandie!

I can do the whistlin’ thing!

I am out, may pop in to look at Playoffs line, then back for the Pens game tonight.

    Have a Happy Hippo day!!

  21. Brandie says:

Best wishes and vibes to you!

  22. I think the Riverhounds wear wooden clogs.

  23. Jandy says:

  24. Jandy says:

Good vibes to Brandie & Hipposter! Cooking breakfast.. catch u later!

  25. theplanisworking says:

I just wished Brandie a Happy Hippo day!

I may pop in for Playoffs line, but I will be back tonight for the Pens game!

You have a Happy Hippo day too!

  26. +1

Some “steady” arms in Indy right now. Taillon in AA. Holmes, Heredia and some others on the way. I agree with you. Pitching 7 and 8 deep is necessary and ongoing if we’re ever gonna win.

  33. CWalton_67 says:

Sens will be coming hard today. Expect Neil to goon it up. The question will be can the Pens retain their composure? Who will lead?

Anyone have any idea why Jarome is not playing with Sid? One of the great mysteries of our time.

  34. 21sthebest says:

I like the idea of a one year deal with a one year team option.

  35. Pucknutz says:

    Looking forward to tonights game.
Do the Senators have anything left?? DK is probably correct – not much.
But – I am a little concerned that they may be a bit too fired up playing for the home crowd and start really mugging people. I am talking about nasty dirty hits where someone may get hurt.

They are not going to beat the Pens just playing a little chippy – hasn’t worked yet. If Malkin and Neal can play smart and just skate away the Pens PP will crush them.

Sid has entered a higher dimension and can likely win the rest of the series by himself. Scary, ain’t it !!

My gut feeling is that the Pens are well focused right now and will just play a good solid simple game. Win this one and pretty much put em away.

    GO PENS !!!

  36. Brandie says:

It’s time to vote the Senators OUT!!!.!..!.

  37. Brandie says:

I will catch you on the upswing, Ms. J.

  38. Brandie says:

I expect them to play emotionally, which I equate to sloppy/dirty. This does not equate to playing with passion which incorporates discipline and common sense. The Pens are in their heads as evidenced by Chris Neil who refused to keep it together when his team had chances to show something.

  39. chethejet says:

Pens need to be above the Smiths and Neil’s that the Sens send out for collecting forensic evidence of Malkins shoulder or Crosby’s jaw.

  40. Pucknutz says:

    Emotionally = sloppy/dirty. I like that !!! :)

  41. Brandie says:

Remember, what matters is the fundamentals. Don’t take stupid penalties and pot yourselves in the best position to win the game, not just show up. The Sens are like the runner up to the Prom Queen…Happy to be nominated, but irrelevant.

  42. Brandie says:

Like +1,000,000. Did you give Bizrow your location so he can add it to the list?
