  5. Game 3, I had a nice little “column” written and then an epic brain cramp happened and I wasn’t about to post that.

A few things need to change tonight

    1) Crosby hasn’t scored a goal in the third period for 22 straight playoff games.
    2) Neal has scored 4 goals in 19 career playoff games, most of those with Malkin.
    3) Malkin has 3 goals this playoff season, Pens need more than assists from him.
    4) Power Play can’t be a momentum killer, 0-for-6 can’t happen
    5) Faceoffs can’t start off like they did in game 3.

    Expected Lineup

    1st: Kunitz – Crosby – Dupuis
    2nd: Iginla – Malkin – Neal
    3rd: Cooke – Sutter – Kennedy
    4th: Glass – Jokinen – Adams
*Morrow is expected to miss tonight’s game due to an unknown injury.

    Defense
    DP1: Orpik – Martin
    DP2: Niskanen – Letang
    DP3: Murray – Eaton

    Goal
    Vokoun
    Fleury

  6. Well, Game 4 is upon us.

Ottawa was extremely lucky to be down only 2 to 1. Yes Anderson stood on his head, but still…

Neal and Dupuis are my key players to tonights game. If they bury pucks, we win.

Another key to tonights game is the coaching of Disco Duck. He simply cannot lose this game tonight with boneheaded moves. The placement of Iginla continues to amaze, and not in a good way.

Looking forward to another tight struggle tonight.
I see a 3-1 victory for the good guys.

And if Bylsma screws around tonight, I will not only volunteer to sit on him, I will help coach the team. ;)

    GO PENS !!!!!!!!

  7. LET’S GO PENS!!!!

  8. Let’ go PENS!

Saw Bowser’s post above regarding Bennett – not a bad move IMO. Like adding Jussi to the line up for his faceoff skill…

Agree that Neal needs to get going…still am in disbelief of the implosion at the end of Game 3, but since I am a fan, that’s ok. Let’s hope (and I do believe) the players are over it.

I said Pens in 6 and really hope it’s more like Pens in 5!

Rangers are toast, so I would like the Pens to have a short series here…

    Let’s go PENS!

Take care all and enjoy the game!

    Randy in RVA.

  9. At the ready out west! LGP!!!

  10. Kenny Albert and Brian Engblom are tonight’s announcers for those of us not fortunate enough to get CBC feed.

  11. Gonchar with gift penalty for interference

  12. Well, thats not a good start!

  13. Ugh-very bad feeling about this.

  14. DK was spot on. Have to get Letang off the PP.

  15. Letang looks horrrrrrrrrrible.

  16. anyone else thinks vokoun should have challenged on that breakaway? he looked deep in net. but maybe thats just me.

  17. Nice job Letang–defensive player of the year–my a$$.

  18. Brandon Sutter is overdue to show up in these playoffs. Maybe this will be the game.

  19. why blaming that on letang? He got dumped in the corner, right?

  20. Nice shift by Malkin line.

  21. Let’s see if they can prevent another short handed goal. Pens on second PP.

  22. Anderson & goalpost stoning us so far.

  23. They are not shooting the puck!

    Very shaky start so far.

  24. Sens, especially Anderson, gaining confidence. Pens not capitalizing on opportunities. Everything shaping up badly this game. Need to get a good bounce.

  25. We need to start lifting the puck, Shoot high this guy and laying all over the ice.

  26. and crosby should have scored that… phillips toe save be dammed.

  27. What was Iginla doing??? Shoot the damn puck!!!!!

  28. This Anderson guy is completely in the zone. Denies the world’s greatest player on a golden opportunity.

  29. If they keep getting these chances, they’ll get one to go in. Anderson has been incredible though so far. Going to take a great game by Vokoun and defense to win.

  30. I said it after last game. I’d rather have Despres in for Niskanen. I stand by that statement.

  31. Pens are working hard. Just a matter of time.

  32. Still waiting for a couple Pens to make more than one tape-to-tape pass on PP. Our passing is atrocious. Every pass needs to be settled before we can do anything with it. And with the Sens rushing the points (how many times have we seen that over the last 3 years and yet failed to have an answer from our coaching staff?) poor passing only exacerbates the problem.

  33. There we go, James Neal!!! Huge goal.

  34. The Real Deal James Neal!

  35. James Neal baby!

  36. Wow a high shot and it goes in.

  37. Finally…. Neal scores

  38. That Neal goal ends 63 minutes and 32 seconds of scoreless hockey for the Penguins. Longest such streak of the year ?

  39. Oy vey!

  40. I sense we’re not going to get the great game from Vokoun they need.

  41. Good job again–Letang–sit his ass on the bench!!!!

  42. Time to scale back ice time for Letang, but Bylsma won’t do that.

  43. Seriously Pens? W. T. F.

  44. Dejan better have his hotel reservations page bookmarked. I can’t help but think there will be a game five in our good neighbour’s capital.

  45. Your best players have to be your best players.

  46. Pens completely dominated that period and are losing. Vokoun and Letang better get their stuff together quickly.

  47. And a Malkin give a way almost made it 3 to 1. Gee will this guy ever learn?

  48. Kunitz, Letang & Crosby all minus 2.

  49. We should have a good feel how this is going to go the rest of night by the first 5 minutes of Period 2. Need to keep skating hard.

  50. After 1 period…………..

Incredibly sloppy play by the Pens. Turnovers, 2 on 1′s, giving up a short-handed goal. Players look hesitant, almost scared at times……….. many poor decisions, cross-ice passes, etc.

They have generated good scoring chances, but Anderson is standing on his head again.

Letang, and Niskanen have been brutal out there. Crosby and Neal have looked good.

Man, this period reminded me of the Islander series all over again. Not a good thing.

Need to eliminate the turnovers, and bury a puck or two.

  51. Oh, dear…another AGITA game!

  52. This team looks lazy and sloppy. No one wants to hit. No one wants to pressure the puck carrier. Just let them skate right in. Letang needs to sit his a$$ until he gets his head out of it. Malkin…bah! Just send him to the locker room. Best person I’ve seen on the ice so far is Lyndon Slewidge.

OshKosh, it sure is good to see you here this evening :)

    • Evening, Jandy.

Changed my avatar for you and Brandie, lol.

You need to get the size 9′s ready………… they are needed !!!

      • Ha! Love the avatar Hipposter.
I’m about ready to get my turbo broom out and fly to Ottawa. Size 9 wides are ready!

    • They’ve been lots if things. Lazy isn’t one if them. 16 first period shots. Puck was in ottawa’s zone majority of the period. They’re working hard, just need to sure up the back end. Crosby is playing like a man possessed right now.

      • no one is hitting a red sweater. Lazy, whatever you want to call or not call it. Get some passion and play like you WANT to advance to the next round. Sid can’t do it all himself, he needs some help.

    • I agree Lyndon Slewidge was pretty good…

  53. And only 8 hits in the first period. They need to pick it up physically, making life to easy for the Senators.

  54. Ottawa’s 2nd goal starts because Kunitz doesn’t get the puck deep and loses it just inside the offensive blue line. Inside Pens zone, Dupuis is too far inside the middle of the ice and can’t race to the boards to get the loose puck and Karlsson sweeps the puck toward the net that Vokoun horribly misplays into a bad round. As puck is bouncing off Vokoun… Letang is standing right next to him with his back turned and looking at Vokoun, thus not a clue in the world from which direction the Senators will be crashing the net.

While that is happening, Turris is charging the net, Crosby is turning up the ice near LW faceoff dot and Kunitz is behind and to the side of Silfverberg, puck comes to him with untied stick, Letang reacts to reach for puck, Kunitz then can’t reach to hook him or anything… Crosby is looking behind seeing the action and then as Vokoun makes a save, Letang bumps into him and Silfverberg… Kunitz out to pasture…. again, doing not and Turris has a straight line to the net with NO ONE on him.

When Turris gets the puck, Niskanen is coming out of the LW corners below the goal line, Kunitz finally tries to do something and Crosby is standing at the top of the defensive zone.

What a wreck of a shift by Kunitz again…..

  55. WWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  56. So Kunitz makes up for it a bit

  57. Thank Kunitz. There’s a finish.

  58. The rarely seen 2 on 0.

  59. There’s your start and they sure love the 5 hole on Anderson

  60. It really seems like the guys are in that “we can offense our way to a win” mindset again. Like the Philly series. And Vouky was sloppy on that 2nd goal too. Poor, poor execution on everything but natural offensive talent (which Anderson is stoning) – not gonna get it done without smarts and effort boys.

  61. 2 on 0. Over-aggressive much? That’ll get em to sit back.

  62. Was karlsonn diving for a call there?

  63. Yes, you can thank me. I rip Kunitz, he scores

  64. WWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO AGAIN !!!!!!!!

  65. no diving call for Michalek.. kinda disappointed. that one looked pretty good.. omg Iginla just finished!

  66. Kunitz goal started with Kunitz knocking down Karlsson.

  67. Keep finishing guys! Let’s go Pens!

  68. THAT’S what I’m talkin about. Keep it up!!! Sens defense looks horrible this game.

  69. Iginla all positioning… bad bad bad rebound by Anderson off Letang shot and easy goal by Iginla

    • huh, not sure how I missed that. Ya that looked easy. Just picking up the garbage and putting it in the net.

  70. Okay, never mind. :)

  71. Here’s what I like, first instead of a dump in they all rush in together, then an off angle shot and people driving the net for the rebound. This is what I have been waiting for.

  72. Anderson actually nearly whiffed on that initial save. About time he made a mistake.

  73. Damn.. Tk couldn’t finish.. atleast Anderson was a bit out of his net on that one to challenge.

  74. How about a roughing call?

  75. Great pressure by JJn BB

  76. Oy!! Who’s in front of Vokoun???

  77. There’s a save by Vokoun. I think.

  78. Vokoun never really had that, wow.
We have NO net front coverage right now

  79. Is it me or was Karlsson just giving Crosby a hug?

  80. Vokoun was on that one

  81. Another scary moment for Vokoun as he turns his head to make sure the shot didn’t go in. Is he really seeing the puck or just getting lucky at this point?

  82. Damn, if Martin’s a forward, I think that pucks in the net.

  83. Kunitz is not on the bench.

  84. Yay! A Vokoun save! (w/ no rebound)

  85. Tanger again

  86. well Milo was right.. next penalty is Ottawas. Was that retaliation for Cowen’s elbow to the face check?

  87. Martin is so tenacious

  88. wow another post… :\

  89. dang that post was our friend

  90. Did I say lucky?

  91. woot no rebound + net coverage for Sarah.

  92. Ah hah free crank shaft to Spezza’s head.

  93. Good thing TV went out high and disrupted the attempt for the defense was no where near him for any help once again.

  94. *hearts* DVR. Gets to rewind and rewatch the penguins goal. couple notes -

    - Kunitz goal on his first shift in the second.
    - Letang shot the shot that Anderson gave up the lil dribbley rebound behind him that Iginla neatly finished.

  95. Let’s bury one or two early in Period 3 and take the mystery out of this one . . . and then hope we get no more PPs the rest of the way.

  96. After 2 periods…………….

Better play offensively that period. Good things tend to happen when you pressure offensively, and shoot the puck. Maybe a light bulb went off here?

Defensively, what a blooming mess! TV is scared……….. because he knows the D in front of him is nowhere to be found. Why are 2 Dmen playing the same Senator? Why are we leaving the crease open and constantly unguarded???

Better play in the defensive zone is absolutely necessary to secure this win.
We are 20 minutes away from a very nice 3-1 series lead.

  97. Offense went into slow gear the last six minutes of that period. Hope Bylsma is not starting the Steeler Prevent the Win defense again. Saw enough of that on Sunday. Cooke, a foolish penalty.

  98. Third period’s gonna be wild…sure hope we (I) survive…

  99. Gotta wonder about Kunitz, last shift was around 7:45 to go in 2nd period and around 8:00 mark, he took a very light check along LW boards and hasn’t been on the ice since.

  100. DB better be pointing some of these points out to these guys.

  101. my 6-2 prediction for a penguins win is still attainable. Just gotta come out and play with some intensity.. desperation style hockey.

  102. Sens will be throwing the kitchen sink at the Pens this period. Hold on!

  103. Good job Cookie

  104. Letang on PP again? Oh boy.

  105. Neal again!

  106. NEAL X2 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  107. Hot damn, did Sid shoot wide on purpose?,!

  108. Wow. Nice goal, but I can’t believe Crosby missed that wide open net. Great puck movement.

  109. Check out the live box score…there s a type o…it had Pittsburgh leading 3 games to none. A good omen…?

  110. And Kuny’s back! Whew.

  111. Does Vouky have some aversion to actually hanging on to the puck?

  112. I think Neal would like that shot back.

  113. Remember, when I said Neal scored only 4 goals in last 19 playoff games…

he’s gunning for more and he’s got 2

  114. DK is right. Jussi doesn’t look right out there. Tentative and a step slow.

  115. Bah thats hard.. could bennett have gotten that one or was he being held up by Turris stick on his hands.

  116. we’re playing with intensity, I like it.

  117. Niskanen continues to prove worthlessness. Too bad, because I thought he played really well most of the season. Complete liability in the playoffs.

  118. Maybe they’ll suspend Niskanen. Might be the only way to get him out of the lineup.

  119. What a play!!!!

  120. DUPER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My 2 keys both scored tonight !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  121. Shorty, shorty, shorty, shorty!

  122. Wow, Gonchar has been a real asset for the Pens this game.

  123. Dupuis!!!!!!!.!!!!!!!!!

  124. SHG goal… thanks to great work by Cooke and Dupuis.

  125. BING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  126. Look out Loretta!!!!

  127. And there’s Crosby’s third period goal…

  128. THIS is the Pens team I’ve been waiting to see. Killer instinct. Beat the weaker team because you’re better than them.

  129. Nother one……The Crosby Show…Beat him like he missed curfew!

  130. Good Lord that was a filthy backhand….

  131. Homeless Frenchie might not see Dejan again until next season,

  132. What a move by Crosby.

Just when there was some concern in the 3rd, Dupuis and Crosby put it away.

    Finish it off Friday!

  133. OMG WHATS THE SCORE!!! xD 6-2. Where’s Patrick now?

  134. IGGY X2 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  135. Amazing…. 1-timer rocket by Iginla

    7-2

  136. Fire Bylsma.

  137. This is as dominating a puck-possession game as I’ve seen the Pens play in a while.

  138. Elvis is heading home for his nighttime peanut butter and banana sandwich and a double bourbon!

  139. this is approaching laugher velocity… gotta keep the pedal down though.. we dont want no leaf-sized collapses.

  140. Three goals in 1:45.

  141. bah nevermind, my DVR is slow. *shakes fist at thunderstorm*.. not even see goal 7 yet.

  142. TK with the feet of fury!

  143. Happy to put a dent in Sens scoring dominance in the 3rd.

  144. Friggin ALfredsson

  145. 7-3 no we. I just wish the Senators would just find their quit already.

  146. Buccos win 1-0

  147. go baby penguins!!! did everyone else hear that? only third team in AHL history to come back down from 0-3 series.

  148. Is game 5 on Friday?

  149. Raise the Jolly Penguin !!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)

  150. Well, that was pretty definitive. #sohappy

  151. Feels good. Pens beat em like they stole from the church collection plate.

  152. yep, very good night for the penguins organization.. we get to go home now and play for the series.

  153. Off to bed…happy dreams tonight :)

  154. End of game thoughts………….

the 3rd period is what happens when you commit to pressuring the other team in the offensive zone, and shoot the puck. Puck normally cant go in unless you shoot it. puck possession was good also………….. dont turn it over, you dont give the other team cahnaces to score.

Great to see Neal and Dupuis have good games. overdue, I think, but hey, I will take them anyday.

One word of caution about this group…………. If they play D like they did tonight, they will need to score 7 goals a game to win. Very sloppy, no presence in front of Vokoun.

But we have a much desired 3 to 1 lead!

  155. another fun stat… Crosby fastest players to 40 playoff goals.

  156. Few thoughts:

    1. Nice to break through Anderson. He had me sweating in the first period.

1a. Nice to put it away early in the 3rd, so I didn’t have to sweat all the way to the end.

    2. Still think Letang needs to sit on the 1st team PP. Iginla and Martin on the points. Per Coach Kovacevic.

    3. Dead horse: Isn’t it funny that Bylsma called that lineup he sent out at the end of game 3 his possession lineup. With Malkin and Letang??

    4. Hopefully win it at home in five. Hopefully in Anderson’s head. He’s their only hope.

    5. Hope Kunitz is ok. Any word?

    6. Vokoun: Looked shaky. Gave up a lot of rebounds. Couldn’t control the puck. Lots of dribblers through him. Couple of posts. Nonetheless, he only let in two when it mattered and you stick with that. Skill or luck, it’s working.

    7. Malkin: What happened to him? He’s skating like he’s putting in no effort. His defense is suspect. His shots are predictable. His passes are being cut off. Can still deke a few guys and cycle for a minute. But not much to his game right now.

    8. Crosby: Never seen him play so good as his is in general these playoffs. His passes are unreal. Yeah, his speed, strength, and hustle are still there like always. But his passing is legendary right now.

    I’ll leave it at that.

  157. oh and all you Letang haters, guess who got the 1st star..

  158. @kevin … true, he did get the first star. I would say it was a paper star … the stat sheet showed four assists. And it also showed he was only a plus 1. How can you be the number one star when you’re a defenseman on the ice for three goals? All three goals. And he was also credited with 1 hit. Only one. And were any of his assists really memorable. Three of them were 2nd assists. And the other was a terrible rebound right to Iginla. Paper star. Just sayin …

  159. From the Morning Thread…

    >> Mostly out of commission today because of the drive, which actually will begin shortly after this very filed is shut down for the night!

Looks like that very filed is indeed shut down for the night.

    No comments field.

    • I blame myself for this.

I sat on their VW Bus, and crushed it.
They now have to drive back in a 1978 Pacer.

I would shut the comments field down too, if I had to ride in one of those………

    • Yeah, count me as another lunatic drifting through the Blog looking for a place to temporarily plop down until DK reopens for business.
So… this is what a hockey thread looks like. Alrighty then. Now I know why that hockey coach’s dog ran away.
