“Someday, we’ll score for A.J. We’ve just got to be better.”

    – 2B Neil Walker on lack of run support for RHP A.J. Burnett.

That’s the spirit. Do hope “someday” comes soon.

Now, the last Wandy pitched here, his line went:
    3.2IP 6H 7R 7ER 4BB 2K and 3HR . That was no less than…

  2. Jandy says:

    Go Bucs!

The Window is either up way too early or up way to late…I’ll let you decide.
BIG THANK YOU to cmat for posting yesterday’s line for me!!

Max “wager” is 100 units on any single line.
All “wagers” must be in multiples of 5 units.
Play as few or as many lines as you’d like.
As always, this is for fun and entertainment purposes.

What will the Pirates get in today’s game?
    Win (EVEN ODDS)
    Loss (EVEN ODDS)

  7. Drew71 says:

Last night, we saw one of the worst movies I’ve seen in years.

I’m sad to say it was Hangover 3.

    Offensive, stupid, forced, VERY contrived.

Just a money making machine with no redeeming qualities.

Fake Avant Garde. “Edgy” humor is fine for me as long as it’s, you know, funny.

Which gets to its greatest sin. Except for a few laugh out loud sight gags, for very long stretches…

  8. Drew71 says:

    Continuing our StayCation.

Yesterday (thankfully) included more than H3. It was Spa Day, followed by dinner at one of our favorite restaurants overlooking the intercoastal waterway.

Today is the best weather day of the three. High of 89, 0% chance of rain, no clouds, nice breeze. Beach Day.

Evening plans undecided among several options.

PS. We kennelled the dogs for the long weekend. Do we know how to have fun or what?

  9. 21sthebest says:

Mid 60’s and sunny here. We’re having both families over to celebrate the boy’s graduation. You’re more than welcome to join us!

  16. Bizrow says:

    100 on the win, thanks

  17. By all these “we’s” you’re referring to you and Mrs. Drew?

  18. Drew71 says:

    Yes. Thunder wasn’t available.

  19. Joey Mellons says:

    100 on the win.

  20. likeabugonarug says:

    Oh MY!

    Great dancing, Hippo! :-)

  21. Thundercrack says:

“He’s not afraid of the barrel,” Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said.

Nice quote from Clint about Locke

  22. Drew71 says:

    Neither am I.

    Wonderful for fermentation.

  23. Thundercrack says:

I was going to include a comment that referenced you and beer.
    EYE didn’t include it.

We spend too much time together.

  24. Drew71 says:

    Yes we do.

We need to do something about that.

Meet me at the bar and we’ll figure something out.

  25. Thundercrack says:

Sorry Drew. I just invited myself to 21’s house for the graduation party.

  26. Thundercrack says:

I am not a big fan of Carlos Gomez when he taps his helmet as he touches every base during his home run trot.

I hope he doesn’t hit a home run today.
And I hope a Pirate pitcher might send a message that we’re not thrilled with it.

  27. Thundercrack says:

A funny comment on the broadcast yesterday when Gomez was circling the bases.
Bob Walk noticed that he was tapping his helmet 2 times at each base and it was his second homer of the series. He wondered if Gomez only tapped it once the night before during his first home run trot.

Walk then made a comment (along the lines of): “He’s like Paul Revere”

  28. Drew71 says:

Who do you think is his bartender?

  29. Drew71 says:

Most people don’t know the last line of Revere’s famous quote…

    “Three if he’s beaned”

    Except WE get to tap.

  30. 21sthebest says:

    Sounds good. Junior likes cash.

  31. Lad9 says:

100 on a win please sir. Thank you and Go Buccos!

  32. Ermine says:

    100 win

  33. Ermine says:

I wonder if Morris will be called in to face the tapper :-)

  34. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Was it worse than Caddyshack 2?

  35. theplanisworking says:

This is still as hilarious as when I saw it 11 hours ago!

Good Lord Ghost, + 10000000000000000000000000000000000 for finding this.

I just cannot stop laughing every time I see this!

  36. theplanisworking says:

    Sad part is,

    1) I look just like that (save for the purple)
    2) I cant move nearly that well!

  37. Playoffs by 2012 says:

The whole tap thing looks kinda…well…stupid.
But one thing I did notice is that on both home-runs he hit, and both were “no-doubters” off the bat.
He didn’t stand at home plate and admire them, and he ran close to full speed around the bases.

In the end I find it more “offensive” when a guy stands at home plate and admires his work before going into a 60 second fast walk around the bases, than someone who does a slight tap of their helmet when going around second base at close to full speed.

But hey, that’s just my take on it.

  38. JaxBuc says:

Clearly, the stadium in Milwaukee is oddly configured (and i refuse to call it a ballpark), but if we have two guys playing CF and one in LF, does Walker play deep to cover Right?

  39. Jandy says:

Hippo rocks. Ghost, you rock too :)

  40. Jandy says:

100 units for the WIN! Thanks PLayoffs :)

  41. Thundercrack says:

Listening to Greg Brown on the pregame show. They’re talking about the trades last year at the deadline and the change in the ‘chemistry’.

He is saying that what may have upset the players was not Lincoln being traded for Snider. But it may have been the demotion of Correia to the bullpen instead of Bedard.

No mention of the importance of Casey McGehee

  42. Jandy says:

well, then I’m not wasting money to go see it. Still need to see Ironman 3 and I want to see the new Fast and Furious Movie as well

  43. Jandy says:

    Congrats to the graduate :)

  44. Thundercrack says:

I agree that they were no-doubters and I too hate when players admire their homers. (and Gomez didn’t).

But I think it may have been a ‘slight’ tap on the helmet, but it was noticeable. And he seemed to be talking to himself too while he was doing it.

  45. Jandy says:

Grillin dogs and burgers. Beans baking in the oven and macaroni salad ready and waiting. Sis and her hubby coming to join us. Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend. Maybe catch ya’ll later :)

  46. Drew71 says:

Took 90 minutes but we made it to the beach.

She’s scaring off the small children which is good on a crowded weekend.

  47. How is she doing it?

  48. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Good point and very true, TC.
The whole helmet-tapping celebration thing looked dumb, especially in a game where you are down by 4 in the late innings.

I think it also may be a culture thing as well.
From watching a lot of the WBC this year, it seemed that the Latin American players were very big on making loud and flamboyant celebrations.

Perhaps, and I DON’T know this to be fact…only speculating, in Latin American countries making a small gesture like that isn’t seen as showing someone up.
Don’t really know, only speculating here.

In any event, there is a real simple solution to stop him from helmet-tapping.
Don’t leave stuff over the plate for him to hit. :)

  49. Drew71 says:

    Same. Except more offensive.

  50. Playoffs by 2012 says:

An invite would have been nice……..

  51. theplanisworking says:

    Still laughing at this……..

  52. Playoffs by 2012 says:

    I’ll pass as well then.
    Thank you.

  53. Drew71 says:

    Cold stare.

    (Think honeymoon.)

  54. theplanisworking says:

Dont even imagine what beans would do to a Hippo……… ;)

  55. theplanisworking says:

    Mr. Playoffs,

concluding my minimalist weekend, I would like the following…………

    5, a whole 5 units on a WIN.

    Thank You.

  56. Thundercrack says:

It will be interesting to see how the increase in the “flair” from Latin players is or isn’t accepted in the game.

  57. Keith says:

100 on a win today. I also see a win tomorrow vs. Verlander. (Do not bet against Liriano right now.) Now, when A.J. takes on Anibal Sanchez? Yikes.

  58. Drew71 says:

See? She scares off posters, too.

  59. Dadtackular says:

    100 on the loss

  60. cmat0829 says:

    100 on the WIN .

  61. radio wave says:

My heart says win, my head says loss. So I will take 50 on the loss. Hope I am wrong.

  62. Ermine says:

If they get base runners, will the Brewers run at will against McKenry?

  63. Patrick(ri) says:

How do you suppose the Pirate Parrot soap dispenser works?

  64. Drew71 says:

Depends on whether it’s a boy or girl parrot.

  65. Drew71 says:

Now sitting on the outdoor deck of Rusty Bellies at the Sponge Docks overlooking, of course, the water. And an active commercial fishing and sponging dock.

    2:45. Time for dinner.

Wife: Crab cake sandwich with a corn soufflé side, ice tea.

Me: Greek salad, crab bisque, La Fin Du Monde triple golden ale.

Fried hush puppies to start us off.

I hope you’re all enjoying our StayCation.

  66. Ermine says:

Wandy escapes the 2nd. That might be a good sign. Still 1-0 good guys

  67. Last year you cooked yourself. You’re slipping.

  68. twentytwo22 says:

Hitter’s counts one time through the order. This needs to continue

    Marte 2-2
    Walker 3-2
    McCutchen 1-1 SINGLE
    Jones 3-2
    Sanchez 2-0
    Alvarez 3-2
    McKenry WALK
    Mercer 1-2 TRIPLE
    Rodriguez 3-2

  69. Drew71 says:

That’s tomorrow. Firing up the grill and making my own guacamole, potato skins and grilled onions and (hot) peppers.

After dinner today (and tomorrow), our favorite vacation activity.

She takes the couch. I take the overstuffed chair.

So we don’t, you know, touch.

  70. Ermine says:

Pedro gets his first hit off Gallardo, a two run double :-). 4-0 good guys.

  71. Ermine says:

Wandy dodging bullets. Pedro almost gave back the runs he drove in. Still 4-0 after three.

  72. Drew71 says:

    But can he cook?

  73. Bizrow says:

Too much information, thank you ;-)

  74. Drew71 says:

    Our dinner conversation…

    Priscilla: “i LOVE Madonna!”

Me: (quietly stare out at water)

  75. Bizrow says:

Starlin, and I know its early, is looking like the real deal

  76. Ermine says:

Water is a good thing .. lol

  77. JRay3 says:

Certainly he is giving the appearance of a true five tool player…so much fun to watch.

  78. JRay3 says:

Much better start fo him in Milwaukee this go round. Veteran pitchers usually able to make quick adjustments and today he has and is outdueling Gallardo.

  79. Drew71 says:

Wait til I tell our honeymoon stories.

    Oh wait.

    Not much to tell.

  80. Ermine says:

He has definitely passed the eye test so far.

  81. JRay3 says:

Very nice quick turn by Mercer to get the inning ending 6-4-3 DP. Getting a little bit of everything this series, solid pitching, some power from the bats, timely defense, recipe for putting W’s up on the board.

  82. Lad9 says:

Just got in and the first thing I saw was Jordy Mercer starting a tough double play. Looks like a major league SS to me.

  83. Patrick(ri) says:

With the exception of hitting with RISP, this team seems to be hitting on all cylinders. Fun to watch. This may be the year — sure looks like it sonfar.

  84. Drew71 says:

    Dogs are in the kennel.

I wanna drive over, call out their names, make em bark, and run away.

A day and a half in the kennels and the house already smells better.

  85. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Gonna need someone to re-post tomorrow’s lines for me.
I will put them up here sometime either late tonight or early tomorrow morning.
    Thanks in advance!!

  86. Patrick(ri) says:

Got 3beagles spread over me and the couch. What’s a little odor, when you can have that?

  87. Ermine says:

Is four runs going to hold up..I have an uneasy feeling. I hope I’m wrong

  88. Drew71 says:

    Are yours incontinent?

  89. Bizrow says:

Got the same feeling, we’re thinking this one is in the bag, but its only 4-0

  90. Bizrow says:

Dachsys go anywhere, they behave for a while, then surprise you

  91. Well let’s add on then.

  92. Bizrow says:

Not much to tell or not much you remember?? emoticon intended

  93. Bizrow says:

    + 1

But Wandy is dodging raindrops right now

  94. Ermine says:

  95. JRay3 says:

Why was Walker going to cover the base there? Should be out of the inning. Wandy really has to deal here.

  96. Ermine says:

Wehner tried covering for him, but he just cost them three runs.

  97. theplanisworking says:

    You know,

I really dislike the poster child for cheating, Ryan PED Braun.

    Really do.

He smells worse than the dogs. ;)

  98. JRay3 says:

No excuse for Walker’s mishap, did indeed cost the team three runs, thankfully Wandy gets Ramirez to end the fifth.

Going to need to get to Brewers bullpen.

  99. JRay3 says:

Fort bangs lead off double, nice start after letting Brewers back in it, need to respond.

  100. tdb1977 says:

With us playing four against Detriot, when is Verlander scheduled to pitch against us?

  101. Bob Hasis says:

    Tomorrow afternoon

  102. You’re not predicting a no-no are you, Bob?

  103. Bob Hasis says:

    Why does that question arise?

  104. Nice 5-pitch inning for Mazzaro. He’s really come into his own.

  105. Some were predicting it last year against us and he threw a one-hitter and it was a J-Hay hit, if memory serves, which it usually doesn’t.

  106. Bob Hasis says:

I only report on what I see and realize is truth – and our SS today is playing his normally fine game!!

  107. Bob Hasis says:

I will say this; our offense will be challenged by Verlander. I hope they can respond

  108. theplanisworking says:

Which is good, because only one player is allowed to pitch from the mound.

  109. Bob Hasis says:

I am surprised none of our astute observers mentioned where PA was positioned on Braun’s bases loaded at bat.
In crisis situations, aren’t they instructed to guard the line and prevent a double, such as in the very late innings nursing a one-run lead, conceding if necessary a single

  110. JRay3 says:

Bucs record when leading after 6 and 7 innings: 23-1.
Bucs record when leading after 8 innings: 28-0.

Have to feel good when we get to this stage of the game holding a couple run lead.

Nice effort turned in by Mazzaro today holding the Brewers in check over two innings of work and getting Braun in big situation.

  111. Patrick(ri) says:

Whew. Almost up there with the immaculate deflection. Nice to get past Braun! This may be the year.

  112. JRay3 says:

Shouldn’t have come to that if Walker stays put play before…5th inning is little early for late game defensive positioning.

  113. Patrick(ri) says:

    Shocking. A bunt fails.

  114. Bob Hasis says:

But you miss the point – IT DID. Often times the preceding play dictates how the next play is deployed

  115. JRay3 says:

First Mercer can’t get bunt down but bails himself out with two strike hit, now Barmes pops up bunt attempt for an out. Great start to the year but this team does need to improve on its ability to move a runner via bunt when needed.

  116. Patrick(ri) says:

How about a hit with RISP?

  117. JRay3 says:

@ Bob – with all do respect it was the 5th inning, defensive alignment was fine, Braun is one of the top hitters in the game he is going to come through at times and not just against the Pirates.

The opposition does not do that when Cutch is up early in games with run producing opportunity, they pitch to him and hope they make a pitch. Wandy didn’t make the pitch, he did to Segura and the defense let him down.

The team is on a tear right now so I would tend to side with the manager is doing more good than harm in his in game management.

  118. Patrick(ri) says:

The Achilles heel for this team. What would have been the worst outcome of letting Barmes hit? At least we probably would have gotten a man to 3rd.

  119. JRay3 says:

In the good news department the Cubs have come back from down 4-1 to take 5-4 lead on Reds in 10th.

  120. Patrick(ri) says:

Does anybody know how many hits we have had in the last 50 ABs with RISP? The announcers have quit talking about it.

  121. JRay3 says:

Behind ten hits including a two run double by Pedro Alvarez and a league leading 20th save in as many chances for Jason Grilli the Bucs down the Brewers to win their fifth consecutive series 5-4 and there was noooooooooo doubt about it.

With the win the Pirates improve to a season best 12 games above .500 at 31-19, and are now 16-7 in the month of May, 10-3 in last 13. The Bucs head to Detroit to begin four consecutive games with the Tigers with the first two at Comerica Park with Francisco Liriano scheduled to take the mound in the opener.

    Let’s Go Bucs!

  122. Drew71 says:

    well. that was easy

  123. Keith says:

Verlander is the Tigers’ Burnett. Bucs win behind smoking Liriano.

  124. JRay3 says:

    Some other interesting stat tidbits:

After 50 games last season the Pirates were 25-25.
The Bucs did not win their 31st game of the season until June 9th last year.
First series win in Milwaukee since June of last year, just 3rd series win here since ’07.
Pirates now 6-4 versus Brewers this year, what curse? 16-8 versus NL Central.

Reds blow lead lose to Cubs, now need LA to make it two straight over Cards.

  125. Patrick(ri) says:

    Game ball to Mercer.

  126. twentytwo22 says:

6-2 versus Milwaukee this month. Only 9 games left against that team. Only 3 in Milwaukee.

Have to get better at tacking on runs so these games aren’t close at the end so Melancon and Grilli can get a break.

The offense knocks Gallardo out of the game after 4 with a series of good at-bats but then gets 1 run off a bad bullpen.

The at-bat McCutchen had against the rookie reliever deep deep into his second inning was disappointing.

The 8th inning was an atrocity.

The offense does what it takes to win and nothing more.

They’ll see Verlander but not Scherzer against Detroit. They went 3-3 against them last year. The 3 losses were to Verlander and Scherzer. They almost beat Verlander the second time they saw him.

Don’t mail in a loss tomorrow.

  127. Bob Hasis says:

Agreed it was the 5th inning, but when a dangerous hitter is at bat in a critical situation, everything must be considered to minimize any potential damage.

With your premise, tell me why certain teams, against certain batters, have three infielders on one side of the field? My answer is to minimize or eliminate any potential damage.

JRay, it was admitted that Walker made a mistake – Wandy made the pitch.

I am NOT citing CH as much as I am PA unless he was directed to cover more of the hole. However CH must have forgotten that Barmes wasn’t in the game. That is an LOL

  128. likeabugonarug says:

Good thing you aren’t purple. Otherwise, people might think you are related to Barney.

  129. theplanisworking says:

I am going to laugh at this forever. :)

  130. Ghost says:

House of Horrors no more. We can now call Miller Park the Hippo Habitat. A teensy bit surprised not more people here reveling in the Buccos’ series win.But it is a Sunday on a three-day weekend, after all. Myself, I’ve been out all day, and ready to head out again until late night.
As Bill and Ted once exhorted us: “Party on, dudes!”

  131. theplanisworking says:

As you can tell by the hilarious video above, I am very busy dancing celebrating the Bucs win.

My fave……….. the candy bar! ;)

I would be remiss to not give credit to one Mr. Hurdle.
Not saying he is a genius, but his moves this year seem to be working almost all the time.

    Go Bucs !!!!!

Been traveling this weekend to/from a family wedding, but got home and have to comment on another nice series by the new Bucs in which losing the first game in tough fashion (yes, even in the house of horrors!) does not deter this team from the task at hand. There is a sense of maturity about this team. No panic any more. They really do expect to win every game.

I’m glad you noted, JRay, that the Bucs did not win their 31st game last season until 6/9. All I keep hearing on places like MLB Radio is something to the effect of, “The Pirates are playing well, but can we trust it? We are going to withold judgment for now because we’ve seen this act before.” Actually, no, we have not seen this act before. The last 2 years the Bucs did not get off to great starts. In fact, this is one of their best starts ever.

  141. Jim S. says:

And an awful bunt attempt by Barmes screws up a chance at late insurance. I am trying to give Clint the benefit of the doubt because of his glove, but even with a few important hits of late we are never far from disappointment with him at the plate. It bothers me that no one on this team seems to be able to bunt – whether it is the pitchers or our veteran SS.

  142. Jim S. says:

He has done a really nice job of utilizing the bullpen. I still think he needs to use Melancon and Grilli more aggressively when we are tied or occasionally earlier in games. But, even in those instances, he has shown some occasional flexibility – which not many managers do. I can’t really argue with much of what he has done this year. I don’t expect LaRussa. I just want our Manager to not give games away with stupid decisions. He is not doing that. I give him an A- so far, which is great.
