  3. Where is that “Always Yankees/Red Sox” criticism today.

Big city Chicago and glamorous big city LA play the matinee game on the pay channel network while Pittsburgh and Boston get the prime time/good for taverns slot on the good ole venerable free Network.

Says something about hockey demos, doesn’t it ?

  4. Let’s go already drop the PUCK! I hate wishing the weekend time away.

  5. Well, after an eternity, the Pens and Broonz FINALLY will play.

Have been reading many things about this series, some valid, some just way out there, so here is the Simple(ton) Hippo’s thoughts on the series…………

The Chara matchup cannot be overlooked. Normally, you send the #1 dman against the opponents best center……….. but Sid’ line will punish Chara, with both speed and the d-pairings physically beating on him. This of course means Boston may move Chara to face Geno’s line, but that frees Sid’s line. Not an easy decision for Boston.

Disco Duck might want to pair Sid against Chara every opportunity he gets. I know Disco isnt a big fan of adjustments, but sometimes you have to.

I have also read about how great Boston’s D is. Ottawa had the best regular-season defense, and the Pens made short work of it. People keep saying they are of Vokoun’s rebounds……….. that is an issue for most goalies. As long as the Pens clear the crease, it shouldnt be a problem. If they dont, well, of course it might be a problem.

And lastly, the issue of Tuuuuuuuuukkkkkkkaaaaa Rask is upon us. He has had a good playoffs so far………… facing 2 very challenged offensive clubs. Rask has a history of imploding (see 2010 playoffs against Philthy), has a history of angry meltdowns, and most importantly, he isnt a good goalie side-to-side. I remember one of the games against Boston this year, and the Pens scored 2 or 3 quick goals against him by going side-to-side in the offensive zone. Many people have forgotten about that due to the Leafs, and Rangers being his first 2 opponents.

I dont think this series will be easy, but I dont see it as the challenge many do.
I think at the end of the day, the Pens have too much firepower from too many players to be stopped.
I see the Pens winning in 6.
If they can rattle Rask, it may be in 5.

    GO PENS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Well I am not sure i agree with you’re Rask.
IMO he’s been stellar this year.
Doesn’t mean the Pens might not light him up.

    • Pretty good thoughts there plan. Just about the way I see it for the most part.

Really agree with you last paragraph. The Pens are just too deep and have too many guys that want that Cup very much. I don’t think Boston can keep up w/them for too long.
      6, maybe 5 .

      GO PENS !!!

      Drop the puck already !!!!

  6. Go Pens! Go Bucs!

Less than four hours to go. Man I hope everyone sits back occasionally and appreciates what we have in this team. It is loaded with talent. Talent that we probably won’t see together on the Pens in our lifetime. Just The Captain and Geno are more than a city could hope for.

  7. One team shouldn’t be any “rustier” than the other, right?

    Cream rises.

    Pens in 5, maximum 6.

That from a know-nothing-about-hockey, lifetime baseball and football guy.

  8. Panger doing the Hawks game!

    • Shots are like 14-3 for CHI, but LAK up 1-0.
For anyone that thinks average goaltending behind great offense can get it done this time of year.

      • Are you calling out TV, Sarah ?

        • No. As I said before, I’d first have to see how the Pens and TV manage the Bruins heavy forecheck, when rebound control and net front covg has been a weakness thus far.

I do believe that goaltending is A HUGE differentiator this time of year. As we are seeing now in Chi. This game could be 3-1 Hawks right now but thanks to Quick, it isn’t.

The question IMO is whether the Pens offense can make up for any defensive deficiencies they may have.

I do not believe that TV will outplay any G left in the playoffs. But if the Pens O is up to the task, that may not matter.

          • Oh, oh. Milbury not that impressed with TV. That means he will be a wall in the series. :)

DK: Milbury wasn’t impressed with Chara, either, when he gave him away.

          • Good stuff here, as always Sarah. But the Pens beat the B’s all three games this year. I know they say playoff hockey is different, but I don’t necessarily buy that. I think it gives the Pens a lot of confidence especially against the B’s young defense. Boston’s goalie can be had, mentally, and I think the Pens, especially Crosby, are superior at the head games.

I think the Pens will sweep or win in five. I’m also not going to panic if they lose tonight. I listened to the Hawks coverage a lot, and they had a lot of confidence they could beat Detroit, even when they were down 3-1. Pittsburgh is a special team. I think they have that similar inner confidence.

            • Indeed John! It gives me hope!
But we did not beat BO’S by swamping them with goals….I think it was 3-2, 2-1, 2-1…..
              So…defensive battles basically. All 1-goal games….
It shows we CAN do it.

But I don’t see us lighting up the Bs for 4.5 goals a game or whatever our crazy avg is….

Love to be proved wrong! :-D

            • Ya John, my gut is telling me that the Pens are indeed a “special team” – “inner confidence”.

Your points are well taken Sarah, but my gut keeps sayin Cup, Cup, Cup. Hope it is correct!!!

              GO PENS !!!

          • I do believe that goaltending is A HUGE differentiator this time of year

Agree, and just to stir the pot, if TV poops the bed – we still have Mr. Flower sittin on the bench. In spite of his less than stellar play early on – he aint just chopped liver!!!

            • Yep. Guess we’re back to that dead horse lol!
              How long is Vokouns leash?

I think LONG, given they’ve made no attempt to get MAF any reps. Feel like they intend to stick w TV.

          • With all due respect, Sarah, you are concerned about TV and his rebounds?

I would rather take my chances with TV, than see a flopping fish imitation by MAF.

Vokoun’s steady presence will be much better against the Broonz than MAF.

Of the remaining 4 goalies, Quick is obviously the best.
I like TV at #2. He is not spectacular, but he is good. And, since he is not prone to meltdowns and implosions like Rask, I will take my chances with TV.

            • Concerned about his loss of the puck in his pads and skates.
I hadn’t mentioned MAF in that regard. It’s moot, he’s not playing barring injury or implosion by Vokoun.

Not sure what implosions by Rask you’re referring to, but I cannot agree TV is 2nd only to Quick in these playoffs.

  9. T-minus 3 Hours, 10 minutes and counting…..

  10. Jim Cornelison, Rock God!

  11. I absolutely love the Consul parking lot assembly. Quickly becoming one of my favorite things in sport.

  12. LET’S GO PENS!!!!

  13. Pens AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton is fielding the team’s future blue line with Derrick Pouliot, Olli Maatta, Brian Dumoulin, Scott Harrington, Phil Samuelsson, and veteran Joey Mormina.

  14. No idea if this will be official lineup but here is goes

    Pittsburgh Penguins
    Kunitz – Crosby – Dupuis
    Iginla – Malkin – Neal
    Cooke – Sutter – Kennedy
    Morrow – Jokinen – Adams

    Orpik – Martin
    Eaton – Letang
    Murray – Niskanen
    * a lot of talk about Engelland getting some action, I think that would be stupid… hoping.

    Starter Vokoun
    Backup Fleury

    Boston Bruins lineup
    Lucic – Krecji – Horton
    Marchand – Bergeron – Jagr
    Peverley – Kelly – Seguin
    Paille – Campbell – Thornton

    Chara – Seidenberg
    Bartkowski – Boychuk
    Krug – McQuaid
    * Ference isn’t expected to return tonight

    Starter Rask
    Backup Khodobin

  15. Holding my breath waiting for 7:24 – DK and Albi – 11 on the ice!!!

Whats the line on if he has a tie on or not???? LOL

    DK: Ties lose.

  16. By the numbers (playoff)

Goals per game: PIT 4.27 BOS 3.17
Goals against per game: PIT 2.54 BOS 2.33
    PP%: PIT 28.3% – BOS 21.9%
    PK%: PIT 89.7% – BOS 81.1%
Shots per game: PIT 33.1 – BOS 38.2
Shots against per game: PIT 33.4 – BOS 32.6
    Hits: PIT 319 BOS 474
    Blocks: PIT 203 BOS 185
    Faceoffs: PIT 50.1% – BOS 57.5%

  17. Storylines to watch during series

    1) Can Rask handle the offensive pressure he’s about to face against the Penguins
    2) How do Bylsma and Julien handle match ups with Crosby, Malkin, Chara and Bergeron
    3) Iginla’s decision and how does he perform with pressure to succeed
    4) Will we see Malkin and Neal get taken off their game with physical stuff after whistle
    5) Can Jagr step up his game against former team

    • 1 If they get to him early, might be a rout.
2 Matchups may not that big a factor, Pens depth may negate them.
      3 Iggy is a pro.
4 Hopefully they will just skate away.
5 Jagr can still be a force, scares me a bit.

      GO PENS !!

  18. 2 best pre-games in all of hockey…………

    1) Jim Cornelison singing in Chicago
    2) Penguins coming out from the tunnel.

  19. I think Crosby line loves match up against Chara… what a start

  20. …and so it begins.

  21. 1-0 Bruins
Krejci slap shot between Vokoun’s pads slips through into the net as Eaton was sun tanning on the ice.

  22. Unfortunate that the Bruins scored the first goal.

  23. They play for 60 minutes, folks.

  24. Getting good chances, just not hitting their spots on the shots. It would be really nice to see Sutter produce some offense in this series.

  25. Niskanen is really struggling. I continue to believe Despres should be playing in his place.

  26. No way Boston wins this game with 1 goal and Pens able to control the puck in the offensive zone and get that many good scoring chances.

  27. After one period………………

Good solid hockey from both teams that period.
Pens PP looks stale….. they are just standing around, instead of shooting the puck. :(

Pens havent done much to shake Rask……….. I still say going east-west is a key to beating him.
Look at that last series of the period……… Rask looked shaky going side to side, and alsmost let a goal in.

Niskanen may be scared …….. maybe that is the wrong word…… but something isnt right with him.

  28. TV playing as well as he does. To bad the redirect by Martin laying on the ice. But he was trying to block it so some credit there.

  29. A game misconduct is a bit harsh there. Penalty, yes. He got kicked out because he’s Matt Cooke.

  30. That just friggin pissed me off! Grrrr!!!!

  31. I didnt see the whole thing…….. did they give Cooke a 5 minute major???

  32. The interference penalty on Sid was BS, so was the one on Brooksie. Now this. makes me paranoid

  33. PK turning the tide I hope….

  34. I am having a hard time watching this game especially when the officiating is well…..words escape me. Matt Cooke deserved to be penalized but not thrown out of the game.

  35. A caller to a Boston radio show this morning said if Coke were the son of God, he call or would become an atheist.

  36. I love everything about this game except the score.

  37. Lets score on this power play fools.

  38. I cannot believe they haven’t scored. Snakebit.

  39. Malkin is throwing some serious hits here…wow

  40. They are hanging Vokoun out to dry here. Good Lord.

  41. Wasn’t that interference on Marchand on that 2 on 0

  42. Patrice Bergeron muffs the breakaway.

  43. Pens PP is in giving mood, too much standing around and Boston has had some chances while SH.

  44. Matt Cooke hurts this team and Kunitz and Niskanen need to take an early seat on the bench.

  45. What bothers me is the penguins look rusty.. Finding posts or missing the net on shots. Making Rask look way better than he really is. Feel like we just need a lucky bounce just to find the back of the net.

  46. THAT hit is worse than Cookie’s!

  47. Same hit says Regis.

  48. OK now, conspiracy theory?

  49. Ok, now I know the fix is in………..

Marchand only got 2 minutes, no game misconduct for the EXACT same hit!!!

  50. Was really hoping they’d kick out Marchand.

  51. Rather lucky than good for Rask. Penguins just can’t find net.

  52. What do you think the NHL is going to do to Cooke the rest of the series? Is he a goner?

  53. Gonna be a fun third period, boys and girls.

  54. There you go Geno! Although I’d like to see him out there on the PP.

  56. Malkin is really pissed

  57. All this makes for entertaining hockey. Not good signs for the Pens though. Smells a lot like Philly series. This team is better, so hopefully they can tighten up and not let the Bruins get under their skin.

Not sure how much I like the Crosby nudge on Rask. That’s exactly the type of play that fans outside of Pittsburgh point to when they complain about Crosby.

  58. Atleast iginla will finally get to play on top pp. who all else been kicked to the bin besides malkin?

  59. After 2 periods………………

Pens PP is just not working. They have to make Rask move, not just shoot once and let him cover it up.

D needs to step it up also. Vokoun was left to dry multiple times in that period.

I wont even comment on the refs with their calls of Cooke vs. Marchand penalties. Everyone saw it.

I dont know what to make of the end of the period scrum.
It could be a good thing, and fire up the Pens.
It could be a bad thing, as they might lose composure.

This is starting to remind me of the Philthy series last year…………. Broonz are getting under our skins.

    Need to bury some pucks!!!!

  60. Brandie, missed chatting with you. Hope all is going ok for you girl.

  61. For those not watching/following the Bucs……………..

bottom of the 8th, 1st and 3rd, nobody out………………. didnt score.
    2-0 Reds.

  62. Just heard the Malkin and Bergeren received fighting majors.

  63. I’m just not going to complain about officiating.

Sorry but NHL refs are the best hockey refs in the world. They have to deal with players possessing tremendous talent and speed, who are also skilled at staging flops and confusing issues with theatrics . All with inconsistent directives from the league.

I used to ref high school level and that was hard enough. I would also say that the best refs at that level, which would make them the best refs in the state, could not hold a candle to the NHL refs.

  64. We’re 0′fer on the PP again! :(

  65. That’s an even bigger problem than the refs

  66. This game is toast

  67. Unreal. They’re getting all bounces. Pens aren’t. It Happens. Bad play by Eaton though.

  68. Shades of that goal of Lunquists mask….all that grinding by the Bs….
Too bad TV missed that stop behind the net in the dumpin….

  69. How are the Riverhounds doing ?

  70. OK this is just sad now

  71. Cant win if your D isnt around. :(

  72. Boy. They suck

  73. Our hockey team can’t score, our baseball team can’t score, our Offensive Linemen are getting stabbed!!

We got no jobs, we got no money, our pets HEADS ARE FALLIN OFF!!

  74. they are getting their heads handed to them. Getting outplayed the entire game. Bylsma better wake up.

    • Outplayed the ENTIRE game?

      Now, yes. Obviously.

But you and I must have watched a different game for the first two periods.

      • Thanks, Drew, I was gonna say that…

        • Too bad about the third period.

If the game had finished like the first two, Pens looking like the better team but losing 1-0, I’d feel a lot better than I do now.

In fact, if that had happened – Pens lose 1-0 but look solid in defeat – and if I coached them, I’d pull them together after the game and say (with a smile and a relaxed air) “men, you give me that effort, you play like that the rest of the way, and they won’t win another game. Go home and sleep like the champions you showed yourselves to be tonight. Come back in two days and play EXACTLY THE SAME. I have never been more proud of how you played tonight”

But then the stinking third period ruined my Hollywood moment.

          • yeah, they fell apart at the seams. Gotta keep some discipline, even if it means biting your tongue. Hope the message gets thru and next game goes better.

      • Drew, dont make the mistake I made.
        Dont feed the troll.

He stated earlier that Matt Cooke is a “filthy player”, and tried to trash Jandy and I. Jandy is a “blatant homer”, and I cannot be objective………… according to the troll.

All this person does is trash the Pens every time he is on here.

Sorry, but I get tired of his bashing of the Pens, and us.

  75. Simply inexcusable lack of coverage around the net.

  76. Pirates strand two in the bottom of the ninth. Lose 2-0.

  77. What’s going on over here?

  78. Definitely not the senators

  79. Hate to bring it up. Do we go with fleury next game? Penguins seem to have inherited pirates difficulty providing run support. Not that that’s Vokouns problem at all.

    • This is an excellent question.

DK needs to weigh in on this one.

You are right, not Vokoun’s fault at all.

    • This is an excellent question.

DK needs to weigh in on this one.

You are right, not Vokoun’s fault at all.

    • Don’t see any way this is Vokoun’s fault. Stick with him. Fleury would’ve given up 6 goals in this game.

  80. Just curious how many open nets we had where we missed the net, hit post, or failed to elevate. I seem to remember at least 3.

  81. I think Im going to watch a Game of Thrones episode. People seem to score on that.

  82. That’s weird, Crosby arguing a call. What a girl.

  83. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains. Time to do some regrouping. Freakin’ play some dang defense.

  84. Bucs lose 2-0.
    Pens lose 3-0.

Not a good night at all.

  85. what sucks even worse is that we gave friggin RASK a shut out :(

  86. - Pens PP was terrible… sure would be nice to see Iginla out there
    - Bylsma had 2 terrible personnel decisions on 1 PP (no RH shots) and 1st BOS goal
    - Crosby has to stop getting sucked into these post-whistle scrums, whining…
    - Kunitz had 5 scoring chances by my count and didn’t convert…..
    - Niskanen had 4 turnovers by my count and 3 ended up giving BOS scoring chances
    - Letang on that 2nd goal… ugh
    - Bruins owned faceoff circle… 32 for 48…. Pens were horrible there.
    - Chara owned the ice again and didn’t get hit that much
    - Cooke’s penalty was stupid, 2-min for sure… don’t agree with major and misconduct
    - Marchand got away with almost committing Claude Lemieux on Neal.. gets 2-mins, ugh

Only 1 game but Bylsma has to get this team back on track, Milbury is right, they can’t keep having Crosby and Malkin losing their cool and take penalties.

  87. Biggest disappointment for me is that 2 periods into the series the Pens already lost their composure. Sloppy on D the whole game, but just awful in the 3rd after the scraps.

That game was winnable if they just settled down and didn’t lose their heads.
Did vets in the room say anything in between the 2nd and 3rd to get everyone calmed down?
    If so, nobody listened.

  88. And will we see vitale for faceoff help? Pens were abused like 70-30.
That by itself can turn a series…..

  89. Malkin was great. Rask was greater. No worries. Play the way they did in the 1st two periods and they will be fine. 3 posts help. Be cool Sid. Vokoun was ok. 3rd period was a result of being behind. Play smart boys.

  90. Time for Vitale and Jussi — need all hands on deck for face-offs; 67% to 33% won’t cut it.
Waiting for Kunitz to show up again — not sure what nagging injury is but he is missing glorious opportunities.
Although HCDB won’t do it, would swap Depres for Niskanen in heartbeat for Game 2.
Need Sutter to chip in something as he seems to have disappeared, and in off season, need him to attend Gary Roberts’ training camp.
