  1. Drew71 says:

Anybody wanna discuss the value of plunking?

    Just for fun?

  2. Milo Hamilton says:

    #VoteBarmes.

  3. NMR says:

Is that something the kids are doing on the MTV these days?

  4. Arriba Wilver says:

Maybe Clint should flip flop Marte and Cutch for a day. Just for the hey of it. What could it hurt? Cutch might not get a hit? Maybe he’d start spraying it more.

  5. NMR says:

Cutch would be the best leadoff hitter in the league. I’d love to see this happen.

  6. Tom P. says:

The lineup I liked for the past two days has resulted in runs in 3 of the past 22 innings. If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over again and expecting a different result, I am ready to try something new.

  7. Dom says:

Maybe we should rest Cutch. Maybe he’s tired and maybe him being in the lineup day in and out is the cause for his decline at the end of the past two seasons.

  8. Playoffs by 2012 says:

    TWO LINE THURSDAY!!!

Max “wager” is 100 units on any single line.
All “wagers” must be in multiples of 5 units.
Play as few or as many lines as you’d like.
As always, this is for fun and entertainment purposes.

NEW PLAYERS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME & ENCOURAGED!!!

    Line #1
Total HITS + WALKS by Andrew McCutchen in today’s game
    Line is 1.5

    Line #2
Total HITS + WALKS by Neil Walker in today’s game
    Line is 1.5

Please Note – All games must be considered official games in order for line(s) to be valid. Any postponement, cancellation, or suspension of game(s) will void line(s).

    GOOD LUCK!!!

  9. 21sthebest says:

I don’t think the problem is the batting order. I think the problem is the approach at the plate. For example, in one of the extra innings last night, we watched 4 first pitch fastballs go by. I thought they were all hittable.

  10. Jandy says:

Drew, I’ma come to Florida and Plunk YOU :P

  11. Jandy says:

Just for fun, of course ;)

  12. JohninOshkosh says:

The dance craze sweeping the nation named after former pitcher Eric Plunk ?

  13. Jandy says:

I’ve noticed Cutch is one of the few to jump on those.

  14. Frankie says:

    100 on each Under

  15. pattonbb says:

    Line 1 – 100 OVER
    Line 2 – 100 UNDER

    Thanks Playoffs.

  16. pattonbb says:

Lets just hope there’s no “Bailey still hasn’t allowed a hit today” talk this afternoon.

  17. tdb1977 says:

I’m back! 100 on the under for both lines Playoffs. Thanks in advance

  18. NMR says:

False, named after former quarterback Jim PLUNKett.

  19. JohninOshkosh says:

The women at the office play some channel on XM called “The Bridge.” I hear Cat Stevens like 40 times a day.

That is the definition of insanity right there!

  20. JohninOshkosh says:

    :)

  21. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I hear its a valuable tone setter..

Might need to do it again to get the win..

  22. 21sthebest says:

Hitting .354 when he swings at the first pitch.

  23. Jason81 says:

100 on the OVER for Line 1
100 on the UNDER for Line 2

  24. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

What you (we) think is hittable and what the hitters view as hittable could be 2 different things.

  25. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Line 1: 100 on the Over

Line 2: 100 on the under

  26. Bizrow says:

They are due, 100 nuke nuggets on over for both lines.

    Attention KMart shoppers

Note what Biz bets and be advised ;-)

  27. Bizrow says:

    And thanks, Playoffs

  28. stuart66 says:

Playoffs, 100 for each of the OVERS.

    Thanks,
    Stuart

  29. radio wave says:

At playoffs: I will go 50 on the over for a line one. I will go 50 on the under for line 2. Thank you

  30. Arriba Wilver says:

I think they intellectually know all that. I’m suggesting it to mess with the psyche. As in, “all I have to do is get on base.” Sounds simple, but something needs to change.

  31. JohninOshkosh says:

Is it a blue light special ?

  32. Arriba Wilver says:

Did you see that Jon Stewart changed his mind about him?

  33. stuart66 says:

Yes, and your kids “will grow up just like” you also.

I think Kat is going by some Muslim name now.

I’m Pandora fan myself, and have about 7 “personal” channels. Cat hasn’t appeared on any of them (yet).

Tell your co-workers that they have to wear head coverings if they listen to Cat. Might work.

    Stuart

  34. Jandy says:

    just killed it

  35. bman says:

    @playoffs:

Line 1: 50 on the OVER
Line 2: 50 on the UNDER

  36. Jandy says:

    Hey I noticed! LOL

  37. Jandy says:

as long as it’s not a red light special lol

  38. Bizrow says:

Well, if someone would have bet the opposite of me so far this year, they would be miles ahead.

Maybe not blue light, but red?

  39. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I saw on the morning thread trade talk.

I can’t post the links, for whatever reason (big brother) but anyone interested in that needs to go to ESPN and Pirate Prospects for their depiction of the Pirates needs.

    I like it, I like it alot…

BTW, I’d go to PP first. Much better read. Numbers might make your head explode though.

  40. Joey Mellons says:

100 and over on both lines.
    Lets go Bucs.
    Thanks.

  41. Karen22 says:

    Me, too!

  42. Dom says:

    Go Buccos!

    They’re my favorite baseball team!

    Line #1: 100 OVER!!!
    Line #2: 100 OVER!!!

  43. Jandy says:

either that or whatever supplies the music might just happen to “break”

  44. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Told ya to stick with me dude……JRay is just getting lucky

  45. Karen22 says:

NMR—My son agrees with you. He thinks Cutch should have been leading off for quite awhile now.

  46. John Lease says:

Wait a minute, Barmes got a hit last night and got over .200 And he isn’t starting?

    My world is rocked.

  47. Arriba Wilver says:

Read the morning thread, Ryan. You’re missing the point, and it has nothing to do with what side you’re on in that debate.

  48. Jandy says:

    jinx! lol Biz

  49. Arriba Wilver says:

    bob hasis is incensed.

  50. Karen22 says:

Line 1: 100 – OVER (He just can’t stay this cold, can he?)

    Line 2 – 100 – UNDER (Neil’s just looking bad lately)

  51. Karen22 says:

    OY!!

  52. NMR says:

I’ve been kind of railing on this all year, but I just don’t think this team has been constructed very well.

One of the reasons, at least I believe, they struggle at scoring runs is that their OBP guys – Sanchez, Cutch, Walker, Martin, Tabby/Snider – are also the guys counted on to drive runs in. I think that this, at least in part, explain the team-wide struggle in getting guys home.

  53. Karen22 says:

LOL! It used to be Joni Mitchell! At least I like Cat better.l

  54. Karen22 says:

    Fire Bylsma! :)

  55. NMR says:

Uh oh. Well, if he’s cursed with thinking like me, then I at least hope he’s better looking!

  56. Dom says:

What was his before and after opinion?

  57. Jandy says:

he might like it, Karen LOL

  58. Arriba Wilver says:

    Might?

  59. Jandy says:

nah..as long as he’s not an engineer ;X

  60. JohninOshkosh says:

    Yusuf Islam.

Al McGuire would refer to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as Lew Alcindor when referencing his UCLA days, and refer to him as Kareem when referencing his professional career after the name change. I’ll do the same with Stevens. When referring to his music I will call him Cat Stevens.

Not likely to come up again, though. :)

  61. 21sthebest says:

    Then who bats third?

  62. Jandy says:

throw pucks at Barmes AND Hurdle!

  63. JohninOshkosh says:

I did not see that. Stevens took some odd positions on Rushdie and 9/11, though.

  64. Jandy says:

    Drew

  65. pattonbb says:

I was about to ask how often Yusef Islam’s name gets brought up in your conversations.

    :)

  66. Jandy says:

    marte?

  67. Jandy says:

OK AW, I tried to downplay it…but yeah, he’d beg for more!

  68. cmat0829 says:

100 over for both, or I’m gonna be pissed for like 30 hours.

  69. JohninOshkosh says:

I realized I had cornered myself midway through that post, Patton!

  70. cmat0829 says:

Not to be disagreeable, but what traits do you think make a great leadoff hitter? Cutch is not a good base stealer, so that to me is a big mark in the negative to him being a leadoff hitter. He’d have to start hitting the ball to right field more, take more singles vs. swinging for the long ball, etc.

I’m not saying he’d be a BAD leadoff hitter, just questioning why he’d be the best leadoff hitter in the league.

  71. cmat0829 says:

On the offense… I think the issues are clearly on the shoulders of the PLAYERS.. in year’s past we have villified hitting coaches and bemoaned the lack of Clint Hurdle instruction…. I haven’t heard anything negative about Jay Bell and it is clear to me Clint is involved and knows what the problem is…. as he said yesterday, the chase rate is off the charts and they are not swinging and hitting the pitches that are around the middle of the plate. Pedro is an easy target for this, but let’s not give Neil/Cutch/Jones etc a pass. Clint is quite right, THIS offense has to get it going… trades can happen, but Bucs aren’t gonna win if Cutch/Neil/Jones don’t get it going…..

  72. Drew71 says:

    Bullies.

  73. Arriba Wilver says:

This is close, I think, but probably not gospel: Salman Rushdie, who had been on the Daily Show lots of times, was upset with Stewart for inviting Stevens to that thing he and Colbert had in DC. He told Stewart that Stevens had called for Rushdie’s death (over the Satanic Verses). Stewart (who can be naive) said he didn’t think Stevens did, or at least wasn’t serious. So Stewart called Stevens to find out. Apparently Stevens started by saying he hadn’t really meant that, but the more they talked, Stewart realized he really had been serious, and probably still wanted it. And, I think, Stewart then apologized to Rushdie. (And, as someone mentioned, Stevens’ name hasn’t been Stevens for a long time.)

  74. Jandy says:

that would be Ms. Tina Tugnutts to YOU, sir :P

  75. kr70 says:

among other things, Elvis really needed to get the bunt down yesterday. And I love Jay Bell BUT we need to hit a whole lot better. today is another day.

  76. Jandy says:

LOL…I finally made you smile :)
    Truce, friend.

  77. Big B says:

Agreed. It can be very frusterating at times watching players up and down this lineup taking first pitch strikes, and also pitches on the outside corner (which seems to hapen quite a bit). Then taking hacks at pitches up at the shoulders or in the dirt.

  78. pattonbb says:

I come to the same realization sometimes, but it’s usually a millisecond after I hit “submit”.

  79. Jandy says:

Please, BE DISAGREEABLE, I need some competition ;)

  80. Jandy says:

sounds like a lot of hocus pocus to me!

  81. blazer says:

I hate it when I want to pick the same wagers as Biz….OH well 100 on each line for the over please.

  82. NMR says:

Draws walks at an above average rate, strikes out at a below average rate, line drive batted ball profile, and plus speed.

Your negatives are all true, but Cutch hasn’t ALWAYS been the pull hitter he has seemed to trend toward this year. Change in order could precede a change in attitude, as AW alluded to below.

  83. Arriba Wilver says:

Some people for a long time continued to call Muhammed Ali Cassius Clay, too. I think Frazier used to do it to antagonize him.

  84. Jandy says:

Isn’t Cutch also doing better at stealing bases?

  85. NMR says:

Please, by all means. Accept my apology?

  86. Arriba Wilver says:

    +1

  87. Jandy says:

As long as you accept mine as well.

  88. NMR says:

Ya know, I really don’t know the slightest about that part of the game. Just something I’ve never paid much attention to.

Gonna have to defer to someone else.

  89. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Behold the power of the BIZ wager!!!
    YOU GOT IT!!!

  90. NMR says:

    Of course.

  91. Jandy says:

No freakin way! Say it ain’t so!

besides, I’m just going by what my eyes pick up, not by any fancy numbers.

  92. Bizrow says:

    You’ll be sooorrrryyyyy :-)

  93. theplanisworking says:

100 Hippos, or Hippies on the UNDER for both lines !

  94. Jandy says:

    Deal :)

  95. Arriba Wilver says:

    I think it’s called a fatwa.

  96. Jandy says:

HIPPOSTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was beginning to worry about you. Where the heck have you been?

  97. Arriba Wilver says:

I’m going with Biz, too, but only for 50 each.

50 on the OVER for both lines, please.

  98. cmat0829 says:

he has some steals, yea, but gets awful jumps…watch him vs. marte, ain’t even close. And I’d say Marte is just slightly above average in that department

  99. TCB says:

100 under on both. Homer Bailey can be very good.

  100. cmat0829 says:

ELVIS’ at bat was MADDENING. WTH was he doing trying to bunt it toward the hard charging THIRD BASEMAN, when he is supposed to bunt it to first baseman? If I were manager, I’d have called time out, marched out to the batters box, took the player by the shoulders and pointed to the first base line and say, “THERE IDIOT”.

  101. Jandy says:

    Ok thanks.

  102. NMR says:

I know it should be assumed that any blog article written by a college kid is far more opinion than fact, but I have a hard time giving credibility to some of those severely liberal assumptions made in the “top 10″.

I cannot fathom a world in which the Pittsburgh Pirates could field a championship roster with Giancarlo Stanton making $30m. That is just ridiculous. No team in modern baseball history has won the World Series with a single player taking up more than 20% of the payroll. The Pirates would have to either break that record or come up with another $80m out of Bob Nuttings piggy bank.

And I wholy disagree with his quantity over quality approach to replacing Taillon and Polanco within the system. No player(s) in the entire organization can replace those two.

  103. Jandy says:

    welcome back :)

  104. Milo Hamilton says:

I’ll be happy if we get through today without getting anyone else hurt.

  105. Jandy says:

    +many

  106. cmat0829 says:

Just caught up reading the vacation thread, a few thoughts:

    1) Trading for Stanton…YES, like or not folks, THAT is the type of player that is worth some of the top prospects…he’d play for 3 more years and he is RIGHT NOW the player that we hope Polanco develops into. So, I do think trading Polanco in that deal, plus a pitcher who isn’t Taillon (Glasnow/Kingham), plus Sanchez has some merit. But they don’t get Taillon AND Polanco, sorry.

    2) Other than the obvious hole, right field, other impact deadline moves require some interesting decisions. SS is easy, but hard to find upgrades…. Martin is entrenched at Catcher, Cutch is in CF. I assume most agree that Marte needs to play everyday in LF. So, that leaves:

    3B Alvarez
    2B Walker
    1B Jones/Gaby

I really can’t see a scenario that you don’t keep playing Pedro every day… if they get a solid RH guy who can play vs. tough lefties, so be it, but can’t see them trading for someone and benching Pedro. Now, to be provocative, would they consider perhaps a trade of Taillon & Pedro for Stanton and another piece? hmmmmmm

As to 2B, I do think Walker is scuffling, but he is so much a part of the team cohesion, that would be tough if they acquired, say, Altuve, and benched Walker…. But to take the ‘next step’, hard decisions like that are upon us.

on 1B, I think that one is also easy…if they got a very good ML 1B, then Jones/Gaby ‘be gone’ as Hawk Harrelson would say.

  107. Playoffs by 2012 says:

    YOU GOT IT!!!

  108. cmat0829 says:

    Today’s pitching? Grilli/Melancon/Wilson/Mazarro unavailable.

    Who’s available?

    Welker
    Reid
    Watson
    Morris

Would assume Watson would close, if we need that…. but wow…

  109. Milo Hamilton says:

Anyone taking any Giancarlo Stanton talk seriously obviously haven’t read or heard anything 24/7 has written or said since February. They are maxed out on payroll.

  110. NMR says:

    Excellent, excellent, excellent comment.

Taking the first pitch for a strike is something many good hitters do, but only as a means of waiting on “their” pitch.

I have no problem with taking first pitch strikes. There is a reason they give you three. But you better darn well have the discipline to swing at one that is worth it.

  111. Naterosboro says:

    #VoteInge

  112. NMR says:

To be fair, I’m pretty sure they can fit league minimum without going into the red.

But your comment is excellent advice for ALL trade deadline discussion.

  113. theplanisworking says:

    Out and about earlier,
reading the comments on the morning thread, laffing at the shi**torm that almost erupted again there. Then you wonder why I dont engage anymore? I just throw a comment out, and leave?

This Hippo is way beyond that.

Anyway, how is your day so far?

  114. NMR says:

Cumpton has been coincidentally bumped to a 150 pitch limit.

  115. cmat0829 says:

Stanton makes $570K this year..so they could indeed fit him in 2013. And next year AJ comes off the books, and I think perhaps Wandy, not sure…

  116. Milo Hamilton says:

They can fit Stanton in without going into the red, but that’s a discussion for another day.

  117. theplanisworking says:

    No, that’s Zagurski. ;)

  118. Bizrow says:

Was Cutch hit by another pitch?

  119. cmat0829 says:

wow, what a “kick the dog” inning… Mercer Ks, (inexcusable); Jones Ks (inexcusable); Pedro Ks (maddening).

Jones and Pedro were both trying to hit 600 feet HRs… Jones at least needs to just put bat on ball, we likely get a run. Pedro is Pedro, but Jones, very very bad.

This is a day that Leyland would probably start all the scrubs… people who don’t swing for the fence , but um, we can’t really play Barmes and Inge because they just suck.

  120. Milo Hamilton says:

I’m assuming they left the buses running today.

  121. NMR says:

    yes, full count

  122. Arriba Wilver says:

    Fuggedaboutit.

  123. Milo Hamilton says:

    Yes. It’s 10-9 now.

  124. theplanisworking says:

Sorry for the non-Pirate news here………………

New England Patriots TE Aaron Hernandez fleeing from police after being named suspect in murder of a man. Police seached his home, and rental car the past 2 days.

    Resume Buc thread.

  125. tdb1977 says:

And peace has finally come across the valley know as DK’s blog! The doves are free and sunshines brightly. Now, to just beat the snot out of the Reds today and earn a split.

  126. Patrick(ri) says:

This is really pitiful. Package Pedro, Snider, Mercer and a ML pitcher of talent for a bat! I would even make that deal for the Pawtucket (red sox) shortstop.

  127. cmat0829 says:

So the fumes can hopefully claim Inge, Fort and Barmes for a trip to the DL?

Hate to say it, and HOPE I”M WRONG< but this can get ugly…

  128. Arriba Wilver says:

We have Wandy another year, at least an option to exercise.

  129. Jandy says:

    Woah, that’s not good.

  130. cmat0829 says:

is he in a white bronco?

  131. Jandy says:

I don’t know if I’ll have time to watch tonight. I just hope the bats heat up a bit and SOMEONE steps up with a key hit or play to change the tide in our favor.

  132. Arriba Wilver says:

Is he in a white bronco?

  133. Milo Hamilton says:

UConn actually told this guy to take a hike coming out of high school because he failed so many drug tests. Bad news.

  134. Naterosboro says:

Maybe this was discussed on the morning thread….

But, last night, Jeff Locke had the bases loaded 2wice. Now, I’m not expecting a hit from Jeffrey, but…

WHY DID HE SWING WITH LESS THAN 2 STRIKES?!

I’m sorry, but as soon as Mercer gets on in front of him Hurdle (or someone…ANYONE!) should’ve told him to not take the bat off his shoulder unless he had 2 strikes.

Again, I’m not saying Locke should’ve knocked in a run there, but at least try to draw the walk. Or make him throw you 2 strikes. SHEESH!

Sorry, but that really irked me.

  135. Arriba Wilver says:

I think mine was better because I got the capital “I” in. :-D

  136. tdb1977 says:

Has he officially been named a suspect? Last I heard he hasnt been.

  137. Patrick(ri) says:

The fort throws a mean curve ball.

  138. Milo Hamilton says:

I feel bad for Cumpton today. The rest of them look like their missing their nappie. Gonna get real ugly. Can’t even hit a guy.

  139. Jandy says:

Well, hoping NMR and I exorcised our demons, and we can all move on. It seems peaceful now. He and I agreed to a truce and have exchanged apologies. That is a good sign :)
My day is busy as heck, but I’ve been scrambling to keep up here. Work will prevail here soon tho, as I have monthly billings to get out, and THAT takes precedence over everything else.

Don’t be shy, Hipposter, all is fine in Dejan’s Lunatics’ Asylum :)

  140. Patrick(ri) says:

How about keep Marte & Martin and trade the rest for Votto?

  141. Naterosboro says:

Is it just me, or does it not seem like the Reds are intending to hit our players. I could understand if pitches 1, 2 and 3 go right for our player, but throwing 5 or 6 pitches and then hitting a guy with a 3-2 or 2-2 pitch doesn’t signal intent.

But maybe that’s what they want us to think…

  142. Arriba Wilver says:

Sounds like things have changed. Yesterday he was only a “witness.”

  143. theplanisworking says:

Boston.com says he is named a suspect.

    Now they are backtracking.
So much for accuracy in news reporting.

This Hippo apologizes. I was just going off what they reported earlier……….

  144. Jandy says:

Dress me and give me the ball, I’ll hit someone ;)

  145. Milo Hamilton says:

Doesn’t matter anymore. The benefit of the doubt has long past. But they’ve got other issues today.

  146. Jandy says:

happens all the time Hipposter, no worries.

  147. Arriba Wilver says:

They were asking questions on the radio feed last night why he wasn’t told to not take the bat off his shoulder.

  148. Jason81 says:

He should hire Ray Lewis as his lawyer.

  149. tdb1977 says:

    Yup. No worry hippo :)

  150. 21sthebest says:

I believe Houston trading him now makes it Wandy’s option to exercise.

  151. Patrick(ri) says:

At least with no baserunners, we solve one of our issues.

  152. Arriba Wilver says:

Martha Stewart acquitted! ( just one example)

  153. Naterosboro says:

    It is the 1st inning.

They have been slow starters this year.

Let’s see how it plays out.

  154. 21sthebest says:

I give greater weight to beanballs, especially if they’re at your best player.

    15-10 Reds.

  155. Jandy says:

    Sounds like a plan.

  156. pattonbb says:

    I absolutely agree.

  157. theplanisworking says:

Tina Toughnuts reporting for duty !!! ;)

  158. theplanisworking says:

Tina Toughnuts reporting for duty !!! ;)

  159. tdb1977 says:

I see The Fort threw out Votto trying to steal. What happen, Votto’s pants fall down around his ankles while he was going from first to second?

  160. Patrick(ri) says:

Kudos to Cumpton for hanging in there.

  161. 21sthebest says:

Like the week of the Boston Marathon.

  162. Jandy says:

Ok I’m officially losing it. The game is now, not tonight. Give me a Cap’n n Coke, please

  163. theplanisworking says:

    You call?

  164. Jandy says:

    LOL Yup!

  165. Patrick(ri) says:

He couldn’t handle the Fort’ s slider in the dirt.

  166. Jandy says:

    ZING!

  167. Jandy says:

    LOL yes!

  168. pattonbb says:

He was in a ton of trouble at Florida, but it always was swept under the rug.

  169. Jandy says:

    good example

  170. pattonbb says:

    I can’t stand Votto.

  171. pattonbb says:

Todd Frazier changed his walk-up music from Frank Sinatra to the Sopranos theme for today. Nice move by one of those stinking Reds.

  172. Patrick(ri) says:

I like him, but it is really painful to watch him throw to second.

  173. Arriba Wilver says:

Only way it’s going to stop is if Cutch goes on one of his tears against them. So far they have to think it’s working.

  174. theplanisworking says:

Bob Walk’s announcing makes me want to barf.
    That is all.

  175. Milo Hamilton says:

The Patriots suddenly appear thin at tight end.

  176. pattonbb says:

They just signed one. I think his name is Tebow, or something like that?

  177. Patrick(ri) says:

Gronk has become a practice dummy for local surgeons (just had another job on his forearm).

  178. Jandy says:

    lol

  179. Reading says:

Yeah, how about Crumpton drilling Bruce. The Pirates, since nobody can hit the ball, are on track to lose 3 out of 4 anyway. Ejections, bench-clearing brawl, WTH. Go out in style.

  180. Shame we let that tight end beat us in the playoffs.

  181. Patrick(ri) says:

Seriously, with all these talented young pitchers, we have to go after a talented bat (preferably one who strikes out a reasonable amount and under the age of 35). I miss the sound of bats on a ball.

  182. 21sthebest says:

Steelers got screwed by a virgin.

  183. florida steeler says:

And, Gregg Brown–as soon as the Pirates strike out miserably–he starts talking about all these “wonderful” prospects in the minors. If they are so great, where the hell are they??
This team with Inge, Barmes, Snider, Sanchez either playing or on the bench will begin to fold. The MLB talent is not there. And, Pedro does not play like a #1 choice in the draft.

  184. Bizrow says:

    Thats my understanding as well

  185. Patrick(ri) says:

Searage is really walking the party line in his chat.

  186. Bizrow says:

Is he the tight end from the Burgh area?

  187. Naterosboro says:

See a whole 2nd inning and not a run given up.

    Not a run scored either.

  188. Jandy says:

Our bats have got to wake up.

  189. theplanisworking says:

Like I said early this morning……… they are in Witness Protection.

  190. tdb1977 says:

They have three hits today. What more do you want? Runs? That will take another miracle to take place.

  191. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Yes he has……last I saw he was at about 80+% SB rate.

    Last year was much worse.

  192. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Keep stat to look at his their BA with guys in scoring postion.

Last nights game they were talking about NW’s. He has the best career numbers, but is only batting .200ish this season.

  193. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Aw…Fuggedaboutit in the wake of Tony Soprano’s death.

  194. tdb1977 says:

Now would be a nice time to do something Pedro instead of striking out.

  195. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I agree with that as well. I don’t see how they can afford him.

    Pipe dream

  196. Naterosboro says:

On the 1st attempt, think it was in the top of the 5th, Arroyo had just walked Mercer (after having him 1-2) and then went 1-0 to Locke and then he swung at a 1-0 sinker (that looked like ball 2) and weakly grounds out.

Again, not looking for a bases clearing double in the gap, but knowing the situation and your limitations would be a start.

    AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

  197. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Just not at their head!!!

  198. Jandy says:

Thanks, Ryan, I thought he had improved.

  199. tdb1977 says:

That a boy Pedro! Bringing home McCutchen and Jones standing at third.

  200. Jandy says:

LOL right…at their uhhh….I forget that fancy word for sack?

  201. pattonbb says:

That’s the story from his NFL career that he’ll tell his grand-kids 30 years from now.

    That’s the one story.

  202. Bizrow says:

    PEDRO

  203. Jandy says:

    about time eh? :)

  204. Naterosboro says:

Alright. Let’s see if they can do this 2 times. I know…

    asking a lot.

But I’ve been told it doesn’t take much to move mountains………..

  205. radio wave says:

That’s the type of hitter PA needs to be. A keep the merry-go-round going guy, not just the all or nothing guy.

  206. Jandy says:

    lol

  207. Patrick(ri) says:

    +1

  208. Jandy says:

    Amen radio

  209. tdb1977 says:

Can’t be greedy. Got the one back we gave up in the first. Put them down 1-2-3 and bring the sticks back to the plate.

  210. pattonbb says:

When Garrett Jones hits, good things usually happen.

  211. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Stanton is 1st year Arb eligible next season. He will get a significant upgrade in salary, but they are losing quite a bit of money off the books with the 2 above mentioned names.

And Wandy’s option becomes guaranteed base on performance or player option on trade….Astros do pick up some of the tab on the option.

  212. Naterosboro says:

always imperative to put up a 0 after your team scores.

And with that, leadoff single for Choo.

  213. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Forgot the game started!!!

I hate when work interfers with…..well, anything

  214. Milo Hamilton says:

The available bullpen today has a total of 170 major league games of experience. Tony Watson has 142 of those.

  215. Jandy says:

    skeery!

  216. 21sthebest says:

I believe the trade made it a player option only and nullified the performance clause.

  217. Naterosboro says:

Never mind, missed the Homer Bailey ground out…and ANOTHER THROW OUT FOR THE FORT?!

What is going on here? Pedro Alvarez getting 2 out RBI base hits (in 1-2 counts)…Mike McKenry throwing out base stealers…I guess Inge has the 8th and Barmes will pitch the 9th today then?

  218. tdb1977 says:

Did McKendry throw out Choo trying to steal? Did I miss something?

  219. NMR says:

That’s the one stat that leads me to believe this team will score more runs.

If you look at the Pirates and around the league, team average w/RISP almost always closely follows team batting average. Pretty sure not team in the last three years has been over/under .018 difference, if I remember correctly.

I expect BA and RISP to be between .240-.250 by years end.

  220. tdb1977 says:

Choo’s pants must have been down around his ankles as well. Thats the only explaination there is for the two being thrown out today.

  221. Milo Hamilton says:

Joey Votto always looks as if the world’s crashing down around him.

  222. pattonbb says:

Maybe some more bunting drills should be put on the agenda.

Or better yet, maybe less calls to bunt. I like that one better.

  223. Milo Hamilton says:

Is it even possible to play four games in that band box and not hit one homerun ?

  224. Thundercrack says:

I still don’t understand why Walker isn’t on third right now

  225. NMR says:

Ha, also doesn’t help that the dew is still on the grass for you during a 12:35 EST start.

  226. Patrick(ri) says:

    J. bell was one of the best bunters I ever saw. Why are the Pirates so awful?

  227. Jandy says:

hey, maybe the Fort was watching Martin…and adjusted his throw ;)

  228. Jandy says:

    yup

  229. Jandy says:

    careful what you wish for!

  230. tdb1977 says:

I think the FBI lost where they put the Pirates runs since they put them in the Witness Protection Program. After they scored 6 runs on Sunday against the Dodgers, they figured it is better to keep them safe for a rainy day.

  231. NMR says:

Especially considering that is the one thing this group is marginally good at doing.

  232. Milo Hamilton says:

Yeah, that’s their highest ranking in NL hitting categories – 9th.

  233. Jandy says:

    See? Shoulda beaned Bruce ;)

  234. Jandy says:

    lol

  235. SeanAY says:

I can’t watch the games here, for the most part. I’m relegated to listening to the radio broadcast on XM. So I have to ask…

Is Brandon Cumpton actually kinda-sorta OK? Because it sounds like he’s a ground ball machine over the radio. In fact, since I started listening after the second inning, it doesn’t sound like anything has been struck hard at all.

  236. NMR says:

Which is fairly impressive considering half their games are played at PNC.

  237. SeanAY says:

…in my defense, SiriusXM is like, five minutes behind.

    Crap.

  238. Jandy says:

except the one Bruce just put out.

  239. SeanAY says:

    I blame technology.

  240. Jandy says:

Yeah SeanAY, all I have the the live box feed that comes with this thread

  241. Milo Hamilton says:

But just to show you from whence they came, last year they were 4th.

  242. Jandy says:

Good! Just don’t blame me ;)
(I’m in enough trouble as it is)
    lol

  243. Jandy says:

    aaannd wild pitch by Cumpton

  244. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    What part of FLA?

  245. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

You guys can try, if at a computer, ESPN Gamecast…its OK and what I live by while at “work”

  246. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    No way…I dont believe it

  247. NMR says:

Kinda-sorta OK seems about right. If anything, he probably symbolizes this Front Office strategy.

Find guys with heavy sinkers who don’t give up walks and put a decent defense behind them.

  248. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Ha..

    1. There is no dew this time of year.
    2. There is no grass either.

  249. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

No, just another ex-Gator in trouble.

  250. Jandy says:

Gotta do something about this dead wood. UGH

  251. Milo Hamilton says:

The self proclaimed Great American Ballpark is the 4th easiest to hit home runs out of the 30 MLB stadiums in 2013 (Philly, Milwaukee & Houston are 1,2 &3). PNC is #30.

They should consider themselves lucky to have won 1 of these games.

  252. tdb1977 says:

This is what I use at the office. Get to watch the little boxes move around the bases.

  253. Dom says:

    Cumpton sure is pitching well

  254. Jandy says:

    thank goodness for that

  255. Jandy says:

Sorry, when I see/hear Gronk, I think Jordan Staal. Hockey mentality lol

  256. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Correct 21.

  257. Sisyphus says:

Good leadoff hitters get on base. If a guy has Rod Barajas type speed and an OBP over .400, he’s a good leadoff hitter.

  258. Milo Hamilton says:

    Finally.

  259. Naterosboro says:

    PUMPKIN EATER!

  260. Bizrow says:

    Take that, Homer ;-)

  261. NMR says:

Pretty amazing that he’s at 90 pitches through just five innings with only one walk and three k’s.

  262. theplanisworking says:

Thank Goodness Pedro hit that HR.
The tension of not hitting one this series was getting too much! ;)

  263. SteelAg70 says:

    PEDRO!!!!!

  264. NMR says:

    Thank you. :)

  265. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I think you just hit it….not the sack, but the word.

  266. tdb1977 says:

Finally hit our first home run of this series. Still down 5 in that category.

  267. Patrick(ri) says:

And at an important time vs. a quality pitcher — perhaps there is real hope?

  268. Dom says:

    Pedro!!!

  269. Milo Hamilton says:

    I think Cumpton is through.

  270. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I think the Pirates need to go old school.

Play every game during the day..Pedro might hit 100 HRs

  271. Naterosboro says:

Neil Walker needs a vacation from the batters box right now. Who’s available to DH? When’s James McDonald get off the DL?

  272. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

And Homer Bailey is over 100 pitches thus far.

Cumpton, though I have no visual, seems to be throwing well, minus the Jay Bruce dinger.

  273. pattonbb says:

Daydro works his afternoon magic again.

I think it has something to do with the way the sun shines on his ears tucked into his hat during the daylight hours.

  274. NMR says:

    Watson on for sure.

  275. tdb1977 says:

Serious question. Should Hurdle leave Pedro in the 5 hole in the lineup? That way, you have McCutchen, Jones, and Pedro hitting back to back to back. If those three can take off and go on a tear together, runs could be plentiful. Especially if McCutchen and Jones can get on base ahead of Pedro.

  276. Sisyphus says:

Every time I watch a Pirate hitter take a called strike three with runners on I’m tempted to thrust knitting needles into my eyeballs.

That’s one of the reasons I don’t keep knitting needles around the house.

  277. Milo Hamilton says:

He’s closing today I’d bet. There is no good available choice for this inning. Remember, Morris gave up homers to Votto & Bruce the other night.

  278. Jandy says:

    stored solar power…nice pattonbb ;)

  279. Jandy says:

    I feel lots better ;)

  280. Jandy says:

    ouch

  281. theplanisworking says:

    Welcome back.
    Team needs you.

  282. tdb1977 says:

    They can DFA McDonald.

  283. Jandy says:

Ahh..so busy at work…at least I got my invoicing done.
Work is a four letter word..but ya gotta do it.

  284. Jandy says:

Come on, Phillips, ground into a DP

  285. theplanisworking says:

    So is blog………………. ;)

  286. NMR says:

L-R-L? Seems like a decent time to use a left handed reliever.

  287. Naterosboro says:

    Morris

  288. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Or not

  289. Jandy says:

    SO is fine tyvm

  290. Sisyphus says:

No, it was on his back. That makes four on the arm and one on the back in less than a year.

  291. Jandy says:

I bow to those more knowledgeable than I

  292. Jandy says:

    lol ;)

  293. Naterosboro says:

Yea, but will he be availalbe to DH for Neil in the next series? The Angels I think…or is it Seattle? 1 of the 2 tho.

  294. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I thought the same thing…must’ve gone deep in a lot of counts..

  295. Jandy says:

    YES! Another SO

  296. NMR says:

    Shows what I know.

  297. Milo Hamilton says:

A perfect time if you had two. Their pen today is Morris, Reid, Welker & Watson.

  298. Jandy says:

OK now let’s get the bats swinging productively

  299. NMR says:

No other NL team averages more pitches per AB than the Reds.

I want them. All of them.

  300. Naterosboro says:

Let Welker close this 1 out today (if they get to that chance)…give him a taste of his future before he gets sent back (altho wouldn’t we send this Reid fella out 1st?)….

  301. NMR says:

Do you even bother pinch hitting for Morris?

  302. Naterosboro says:

They’ve scored 2 runs today, Jandy.

    That’s 33% of what they’ve scored in the previous 3 games (1 Mon., 4 Tues, 1 Wed.)…

    baby steps.

  303. theplanisworking says:

I say we adopt the American League strategy and bat him 9th……….. will set the tablt for the top of the order……………… ;)

  304. theplanisworking says:

I say we adopt the American League strategy and bat him 9th……….. will set the tablt for the top of the order……………… ;)

  305. Jandy says:

yes, but…the score is tied. Need some production to back up the pitchers. I guess I’m greedy :)

  306. Milo Hamilton says:

    Absolutely not. :)

  307. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

If the stars all lined up and these guys did what they were supposed to do, it would be Cutch, Pedro, Jones.

But I would. That’s where he needs to be.

  308. Jandy says:

    OMG Morris singles :)

  309. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Nah, that’s too much reading…makes my head hurt

  310. Dom says:

Did Bryan Morris just get a hit?

  311. Jandy says:

that would be wild for sure

  312. pattonbb says:

    so does Marte!

  313. Naterosboro says:

Guess not. Base hit to left.

  314. Jandy says:

    yup!

  315. Jandy says:

    marte too :)

  316. Dom says:

That’s what it says on MLB gameday and I just assumed it was a typo. Thanks for the clarification.

  317. NMR says:

Haha, you win some you lose some.

  318. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Who needs bench help when you have Morris in the BP.

And here, I wanted to question the non-double switch move. Clint knows his people.

  319. pattonbb says:

Why does nobody on this team have a clue how to bunt? This is embarrassing.

  320. Milo Hamilton says:

When is Cutch ever going to come up with a big hit ?

  321. NMR says:

My Lord, Clint Hurdle ladies andd gentlemen…

  322. NMR says:

Why does Clint Hurdle manage like an idiot?

  323. Jandy says:

    Now

  324. Patrick(ri) says:

The stats on our bunting must be beyond belief. Give it up and swing away.

  325. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Well, we found something Jordy does just as well as Barmes….

  326. Bizrow says:

    + 1

  327. Jandy says:

    Walk…he’s on..bases loaded

  328. theplanisworking says:

    Yeah, wild and crazy Hippos……..

  329. Bizrow says:

Well, its up to the Legend now

  330. Jandy says:

    Amen…do it!

  331. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I’ll be honest. I dont like Jones up right now with the bases loaded, I think the outcome will either be great, or a DP…

Leaning towards the latter, hoping for the first thought

  332. pattonbb says:

I don’t have an issue with attempting the sac bunt there, but at least have somebody up there that knows how to put one down.

  333. Jandy says:

Well, guys..i gotta go…this is killing me. Appointment for 3;30. So… am sending all the good vibes I have to the Buccos to pull this one off! Later on everyone, have a great afternoon.

  334. tdb1977 says:

    +1

  335. NMR says:

Exactly where we would’ve ended up if Jordy executes that bunt. No way they give Cutch anything to hit with 1B open.

Clint just handed them an out.

  336. theplanisworking says:

    See ya Mom Teresa.

  337. Jandy says:

    <3 those Hippos ;)
Gotta go, Hipposter. Hopefully catch you later. Tell Brandie I said hey, when you see her.

  338. NMR says:

And of course Dusty puts in a lefty.

    My God. Hurdle’d.

  339. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Love that guys potential, been saying the same thing about him. When Grilli’s contract is up, its his job.

  340. NMR says:

I do. You move the runners over and open up 1B with your best hitter coming to the plate.

Any manager worth a damn is walking Cutch and putting in a lefty to face Jones and Pedro.

    Absolutely awful call by Hurdle.

  341. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Agree.

  342. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    that would be #Hurdle’d

  343. Milo Hamilton says:

This is last night’s game still going on, isn’t it ?

  344. NMR says:

    Infuriating. Absolutely infuriating.

  345. Bizrow says:

    Cmon Pedro?

  346. TJ says:

Hello again everyone; needed to take a mental vacation from sports talk after that total melt down from the Pens. Saw some interesting news today and thought I’d chime in despite this being a Pirates thread

    1. Aaron Hernandez destroys home security system and cell phone — hmmm (I believe Ray Lewis has been called for advice)

    2. Builder Bob gets nearly a 1 million dollar raise in JUNE. Who was it this past off season that turned down NFL teams to stay at PSU and said it wasn’t because of money? What college coach gets that kind of raise in JUNE???

    3. ESPN rumor mill has quotes from our favorite Paper in Ottawa where the writer actually believes the Sens are going to target James Neal this off season and expects the Pens to deal him in an effort to keep Letang. Only way I deal Neal to Ottawa is if Melnyk is booted from the NHL and the Ottawa Sun paper is closed as part of the deal.

    4. Pirates looking a lot like the last couple years; pitching carrying the team early with no offense and once the pitching starts to fail the team falls apart. This isn’t even a horror movie. This is like watching scary movie for the 3rd time.

Ok got that all off my chest.

  347. theplanisworking says:

    Not now !!

  348. pattonbb says:

Wouldn’t say Cutch has been our best hitter in a couple weeks. But I absolutely understand what you’re saying.

Pedro can hit lefties by the way.

  349. Naterosboro says:

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand Alvarez has all 5 RBIs today.

  350. pattonbb says:

Pedro makes Hurdle look pretty smart.

  351. tdb1977 says:

Pedro – a triple away from the cycle! 5-2 good guys!!

  352. Dom says:

    Pedro!

  353. JaxBuc says:

I guess Pedro has made up for that throwing error in the first with all 5 Ribbies.

  354. JHadar says:

Now this is the Pedro Alvarez that we’ve been waiting for.

Let’s just hope this version sticks around awhile.

  355. NMR says:

Just how they draw it up on the chalk board.

Give away outs, put two lefty platoon hitters back-to-back in the order, and pray one puts the bat on the ball.

  356. twentytwo22 says:

Look at that swing! Smooth and easy. He swings lightning. So does Jones and McCutchen, and Marte and Walker. Imagine if they did that more often.

  357. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Pedro? Against a LHP?

its the day game thing, please see my post above

  358. tdb1977 says:

Definitely! Brought his BA up to .223 also today. We need more games like this from Pedro. And that 5 spot might be fitting him quite well today too.

  359. Patrick(ri) says:

Now, now don’t get carried away. (Just kidding . . . Sort of)

  360. pattonbb says:

You sound disappointed that it actually worked. Come on NMR, Pedro just cleared the bases. Smile.

  361. Milo Hamilton says:

Hurdle has to channel his inner LaRussa for these last 9 outs.

  362. Dom says:

Is it just me or does anyone else feel he’s having a good game.

  363. JHadar says:

And a little bit of credit to Morris. Without his hit, the inning ends with Jones striking out.

  364. Patrick(ri) says:

Weird year. How often they play like weak Little Leaguers but pull the game out . . .?

Nothing like a hit with men in scoring position.

  365. Jandy says:

Sneaking a peek in here and I’m thrilled Pedro did it! Gotta go..now keep the lead Buccoes!

  366. Nate83 says:

He has never been gone. He will always be streaky but he still leads the team in RBI with a .220 average. In my opinion in Pedro’s case I don’t think the average matters as much as the run production. If he gets 35 HR’s and 100 RBI his average is really insignificant. Many teams around the league would take that production from their third basemen.

  367. 21sthebest says:

Are you sure we have enough pitchers available?

  368. tdb1977 says:

I’m not arguing with that fact Nate. He will shoulder the load of home runs and RBI’s for this team. He keeps sending guys ahead of him across the plate when he is at bat, then the average won’t matter. Its the times that he looks lost that will hurt the team. They will go as far as he can carry them.

  369. Nate83 says:

Why did Grille pitch in the 4-0 game on Tuesday? It would have been nice to have him today.

Really nice job from Cumpton. Definately hasn’t done anything to hurt himself in the future wether it be with the Pirates or a piece they use in a trade to a team that could use him as a safe backend starter while they rebuild.

  370. Milo Hamilton says:

This is looking like Watson for 2 innings.

  371. NMR says:

Haha, trust me, I was about to have a coronary before those little squares disappeared from the screen. Much, much happier now.

  372. NMR says:

By the way, that was a typo above, right?

“Pedro can hit lefties by the way.”

  373. Karen22 says:

It’s such a gorgeous day today I’ve been outside “playing.” DVR’d the game in case we atone for last night & I can see how later. I like what I’m reading here right now. Paleeeeeeze win this one, Buccos!

  374. NMR says:

Did Choo just bunt with two out and nobody on?

  375. Naterosboro says:

WELKER! Let him close her out! See what kinda stones this kid has…

hopefully they’re not the rolling kind.

    Cuz that’d be weird.

  376. NMR says:

What in the hell is going on out there?

  377. pattonbb says:

What in the hell was that?

  378. Naterosboro says:

    Well….

at least we didn’t break any unwritten rules there…

it was the 2nd out made at 3B…

  379. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Someone please explain why NW was stealing 3B?

  380. Milo Hamilton says:

Oh yeah. 10 homers, right ? Brilliant.

  381. 21sthebest says:

    Because it was there.

  382. NMR says:

First you need someone to explain why Clint bunted the guy hitting .286 but NOT the guy hitting .208.

  383. NMR says:

Gotta extend the inning to get to Xavier Paul.

  384. Milo Hamilton says:

How about Walkie spending 5 minutes rationalizing Walker’s baserunning adventure.

  385. NMR says:

    Oh yeah?

  386. theplanisworking says:

at least he wasnt talking about food……. AGAIN..

  387. Bizrow says:

    I want this one, bad….

  388. JoeyBats says:

    Mr.Inge………….0 fer his last 11.
    .
Anyone have Casey McGhee on speed dial? ;-)
    .
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casey_McGehee

  389. NMR says:

    really, really long distance

  390. pattonbb says:

LOL…no typo, I just lobbed that one at you to see what you’d say. Just trying to be funny.

  391. Iceman says:

Really funny to come in here late and read the complete turn around in conversation. Starts with, “Pedro is terrible let’s throw him away for anyone because he can’t hit” (slightly exaggerated). At the bottom of the feed, i read, “Pedro has all 5 RBIs and is hitting the ball well and hard and is most of the Pirates offense” (again slightly exaggerated).

    Just funny to see.

  392. The Gunner says:

Daydro has had quite a day today. He’s gonna be a star for the Bucs!

  393. Milo Hamilton says:

I’ve been lucky, had to keep it muted most of the day.

  394. 21sthebest says:

Yeah. Ever heard of George Mallory?

  395. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Can’t.

  396. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

That’s every time Iceman, it is amusing.

  397. Milo Hamilton says:

Good thing the Reds don’t play the Pirates every game. That pizza shop would go bankrupt.

  398. Naterosboro says:

Haha! The GABpark Jumbotron just had a headshot of Barmes when Mercer is up!

    #disrespect

  399. Milo Hamilton says:

    #VoteBarmes

  400. theplanisworking says:

    For?

  401. NMR says:

Hahaha, you know, usually I’d pick up on that. Gotta take my blood pressure meds.

  402. Kevin says:

have seen 0 of today’s game.. but its good to see them respond positively to that crushing loss last night.. 1st blown of the year.

  403. Dom says:

What’s going on with the game? Why is there such a long delay?

  404. Patrick(ri) says:

As of a week ago, or so, Pedro, Inge and Walker were all hitting below .200 with RISP. Pedro shows signs of improving, but that is why he gets grief.

  405. theplanisworking says:

    Raise the Jolly Hippo!

We just need to address the LOB situation, and better things will happen!

  406. NMR says:

    huge, huge, huge, huge, huge.

  407. Naterosboro says:

Pedro Alvarez’s WAR is now at 1. He has beaten the Reds.

  408. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I’ll take a split with these guys any day.

Tough, tough ball club there in Cinncy.

    Nice win today.

  409. Dom says:

Oh, someone just told me we won. It still says it is the middle of the 9th on mlb gameday.

  410. NMR says:

That one got an office fist pump. Such a nerd.

  411. lad9 says:

Raise it. Nice comeback from last night. I don’t feel bad about a split at all with this team. California, here we come…..

  412. lad9 says:

    Ya beat me! :)

  413. NMR says:

First time that stat has ever made sense to me.

  414. theplanisworking says:

Well, dont know how many of you will be here tomorrow night for the Angels game.

    In the meantime, have fun!

  415. lad9 says:

It is still “live” on Sirrius. Listening on my phone.

  416. Iceman says:

I”m not saying it isn’t well deserved. It is just funny.

  417. lad9 says:

    You too my friend.

  418. Patrick(ri) says:

    +1

  419. JHadar says:

It’s still early in his career. I don’t expect his average to take off like a rocket, but if he could get it up over .250, all other things being equal, you’re looking at 40-45 hr and a place higher in the order where he’ll see more men aboard.

And his defense, in general, is still improving. He’s in much better shape than his appearance would seem to indicate.

If it wasn’t for the Boras connection and the high hopes for immediate success, I think we’d all be much more impressed with what he’s done so far and maybe have higher hopes for what he’ll do from here on out.

  420. NMR says:

Going into that AB against Cingrani, Alvarez had struck out in 42%(!) of his appearances against lefties this season.

LOVE seeing him step up and bail out his manager and teammates. THAT is the guy this team needs.

  421. Nate83 says:

A split on the road against a team like the Reds with their most reliable starting pitcher being Jeff Locke is a good series. Hopefully they can continue against the Angels and Seattle and then come home for a well deserved rest.

  422. Milo Hamilton says:

Just kidding around. Wouldn’t it be hilarious if we voted him into the All Star Game ?

  423. Milo Hamilton says:

Hats off to Brandon Cumpton. Job well done.

  424. JHadar says:

    Indeed.

FWIW — The Pirates site says Gomez’s next start will be in Pittsburgh.

  425. Thundercrack says:

    Observations:

    - The Reds bullpen is a little better than I thought

    - Neil Walker could use a day off. Maybe 2

  426. Thundercrack says:

Yes Milo. I thought he was going to crumble during the one inning.

  427. NMR says:

    Cole: 2 GS, 12 IP, 3.75 ERA, 10.5 H/9, 2.25 K/9, 0 BB/9

    Cumpton: 2 GS, 10 IP, 3.60 ERA, 10.8 H/9, 7.2 K/9, 1.80 BB/9

  428. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Agree. THAT is the guy the team needs over the entire span of the season.

  429. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Great stat…..

    But, Cumpton doesn’t throw 99

    ha ha

  430. War Horse says:

The Bucs looked like contenders today, even with the errors and poor baserunning. McKenry is getting better at throwing out thieves. The split with Cincy makes us 9-9 for June, which is not bad considering the opposition (Atlanta, Cincy, SFO). Now maybe we can add some wins against weaker teams on the coast and grab onto second place for a while. Pedro, we luv ya.

  431. Karen22 says:

WOOHOO…I get to watch the game later, relaxed, sipping on a nice glass of vino. No fingernail biting. And I won both over/under lines, too, for a change. Nice!

    Cheers!

  432. Tom P. says:

Baseball is a funny game. Most of us wanted a split of the series, and if you took a poll the majority would have said the Pirates needed to won the games started by Liriano and Locke (me included). Well, the Pirates won neither of those games and still got the split. There isn’t much that separates the Reds and Pirates right now, and I can’t figure out if each team is equally good or equally flawed.

  433. NMR says:

Yeah, I’m gonna go out on a limb and predict that Cole will be around for a bit longer.

  434. cmat0829 says:

YEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSS! Cueing my inner Hawk Harrelson… BIG BIG win for this Bucs team that refuses to crumble (it’s not August yet).

A few thoughts (not that you asked):

    1) Wonderful performance by Cumpton. He can go back to Indy now and hopefully the experience puts him in better position to get back to the Bigs, though I think it will be with another team.

    2) Walker looks very tired and uninspired at the plate. I agree he needs a day off, egads, are we really saying we want Barmes at SS and Mercer at 2B on Saturday vs. the LHP?

    3) Don’t look now, but Pedro is up to .220, that isn’t light years away from what Neil is hitting….

    4) Very nice job by Morris and Watson, and good management by Hurdle of a short bullpen.

    5) Bucs need to run bases better, but I have NO issue whatsoever of Neil trying to get to 3rd with 1 out… he is slow, yes, but if you aren’t scoring runs you have to take more risks.

    6) Cingrani is impressive but, um, you really can’t get away with throwing 11 pitches in a row at the same speed and in the same spot, can you? Well, it worked against Joness but Pedro hammered it (as Neverett would say). He is a talented kid, but everyone knows you get Pedro out by throwing slow pitches about 8 inches off the plate.

    7) As much as we can moan about the Bucs this series, they really were very, very close to taking the series and they were in game 1 deep…..

  435. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Safe bet..Cumpton reminds me of Charlie

  436. cmat0829 says:

Predictions for roster move? Cumpton will be sent back, but who comes up? Can’t recall Presley…. seems a mite early to call Gomez back as he can’t likely pitch for a few days anyway…. JayHey?

  437. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Stetson Allie

  438. MadTurk says:

Instead of the bunt he did get a hit.

  439. NMR says:

Jerry Sands would look great in right field. If he could hit.

  440. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Could he really do worse than Snider?

    Probably

  441. cmat0829 says:

he’s on the DL, so won’t be a ‘day at the beach’ for Sands. Thanks to Bob Walk for that quip.

  442. cmat0829 says:

I do think they will bring up a position player, because Welker will stay as the extra reliever…. this is outside the box, but MAYBE Tony Sanchez for a quick cup of coffee?

He can play vs. lefties and let Martin DH to rest the knees… Fort can man the ‘emergency catcher’ fort for a spell and work on his throwing…..

  443. cmat0829 says:

my lineup for Friday, since you all asked:

    Marte LF
    Martin C
    McCutch CF
    Jones DH
    Pedro 3B
    Gaby 1B
    Walker 2B
    Mercer SS
    Snider RF

  444. Nor Cal Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Carry 3 catchers? Doubt it…

  445. John Lease says:

    That was the correct encouragement!
