  1. JAL says:

That’s a Sunday lineup–no Cutch, no Martin, Tony Sanchez at DH

  2. radio wave says:

If I am not mistaken, I believe the high water mark for last season was 16 games above .500. Does anyone know what date that was?

Can it be obtained today? If yes, can it be surpassed in Seattle? Will the Bucs face Hernandez in Seattle?

  3. Dadtackular says:

El Toro is batting 3rd today! Sanchez at DH! Good for both of them. I hope they rake!

  4. Brandie says:

These and other questions will be answered on tonight’s episode of Soap! Oops. Sorry about that. My mind got to wandering.

  6. Matt hoffman says:

Give me 100 on 11 or more please! Thanks

  7. JRay3 says:

Great news to report, AJ Burnett is in OF throwing with Jeff Locke and moving around great, appears the calf injury is behind him. He will be nice addition back into rotation.

  8. JRay3 says:

Good afternoon to the window on what hopes to be Sunday Sweep day.

    50 on 2-4

    Thanks and Let’s Go Bucs!

  9. tdb1977 says:

Can I please have 100 units on the 8 to 10 line. Pedro is going to go off again today and this time it will be 2 times! Feeling good for the sweep.

  10. JohninOshkosh says:

Well, I’m goin’ out west where I belong
Where the days are short and the nights are long
Where they walk and I’ll walk
    They twist and I’ll twist
    They shimmy and I’ll shimmy
    They fly and I’ll fly
Well they’re out there a’havin’ fun
    In that warm California sun.

  11. tdb1977 says:

I see Cole will be starting Friday against the Brewers. That means, he will have pitched 3 times at home, and I will have gotten to see each one of his home starts.

  12. 21sthebest says:

    August 6th.

  13. Bizrow says:

100 on 11 or more, I need to gamble ;-)

    Thanks Playoffs

  14. Karen22 says:

100 on 5-7. Bring out the brooms!!

Best of luck to Tony Sanchez on his MLB debut. May it be a memorable day!

  15. No disrespect, but it seems the Angels are running a Sunday lineup every day due to injuries. Hope they get healthy when we’re out of town.

  16. Brandie says:

Awesome. Thank you for the on the scene reports.

  17. Brandie says:

Gotcha on the no disrespect part, but if you’re the Pirates, you have to make hay while the sun shines.

  18. JohninOshkosh says:

    100 posers on 0-1

Strictly a “wager” to try to make up ground.

  19. Brandie says:

    Mr. Playoffs,

    May I have 50 on 5 to 7? Thanks.

  20. Daquido_Bazzini says:

I am in Anaheim Stadium for Bucco-Angel game!

  21. Jason81 says:

100 units on 5-7 runs, please!

  22. theplanisworking says:

    Bring home a win!!!

    (or you’re fired!) ;)

  23. Dadtackular says:

    100 Sunday Blog $ on 2-4

  24. radio wave says:

At playoffs: I will take 75 on the 5 to 7 runs scored.

  25. Ryan76 says:

New player here….100 on 5-7 runs. Thanks.

  26. Hope you fare better than you did at that Dodger-Buc game early in the season.

  27. theplanisworking says:

Ryan76, if you give us your current city, Biz will add it to the list he keeps of the Lunatics (people) here. It is quite the list.

    Jandy, Biz, how’d I do??? ;)

  28. Brandie says:

    Ya done good, kid!

  29. theplanisworking says:

  30. theplanisworking says:

Lucky, we need a sermon, or blessing, or prayer for the sweep!

Wait, sounds like what I need………….

Hippos dont camp, they naturally just lay around in the wild, so…….. ;)

  33. Brandie says:

What’s up with the double posting?

  34. Brandie says:

    Hippoz just chill!

  35. theplanisworking says:

    Sir Playoffs,

May I have 25 Hippos on the 0-1 line please.
I hope I am wrong, and they score 12!

  42. Barb says:

    Or pull out the RAID.

  43. theplanisworking says:

I dont want to take Jandy’s place……… she does so very well. I am just a humble caretaker.

  44. Brandie says:

60 was 14 years before my time, but I will go along with that with a bit of 1979 thrown in.

  48. Brandie says:

You take care to help create a family atmosphere here. I appreciate the effort of you and Biz.

  49. Lad9 says:

100 on 5-7 runs. Thanks Playoffs. Go Buccos!

  50. theplanisworking says:

No, it says the site is down for downloading.

I will bookmark it so I can go later.

When I was “home” a few weeks ago, I should have stopped at St. Lucy’s and got a blessing of the animals. ;)

  51. Brandie says:

    RAD LAD! How are ya?

  52. Barb says:

    EL TORO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes,

  53. cmat0829 says:

    100 on 5-7 please

  54. JRay3 says:

Pedro in the 3 hole, no problem as he blasts on one section to my right for his 19th HR one in each game of this series and four straight games.

There may not be a player in baseball hotter than him.

  55. cmat0829 says:

Angels GM Jerry DiPoto should be ashamed of how he has spent his owners money. That pitching staff is putrid and pathetic… this is what all that money bought?

Pujols for 10 years post HGH era? Joshy Hamilton even after he was horrible last year and booed at home in the playoffs? Awful.

Huntington ain’t great but I’ll take him over clowns like DiPoto any day.

  56. Brandie says:

    Day-Dro….Get Out The Way-Dro!

  57. Keith says:

Clint is kind of cool when he does stuff like batting Pedro 3 and Mercer 2 (not unprecedented) after they raked yesterday. These guys must like playing for him.

  58. Brandie says:

    See ball, hit ball!

  59. Barb says:

    You go Ground Chuck.

  60. cmat0829 says:

LIKE: Giving Cutch and Martin days off, coupled with the offday in Seattle… almost like getting 3 days off. Very good idea.

LIKE: No Barmes, no Inge. Clint has a place on the roster as a utility infielder and position coach to Jordy…Inge is taking up space. I don’t think he’ll last past the deadline.

LOVE: Being able to slide Marte over to Center and LOSE NOTHING DEFENSIVELY having Cutch on the bench.

DON’T LIKE: Playing Fort at Catcher instead of Sanchez…would’ve been ideal time to get Tony some playing time at C and Fort is a liability back there…..

I was hoping Tony’s callup would be for more than a few days, but now apparent that he’ll go back to Indy once Tabby is ready, most likely for Friday’s game vs. the Brewers.

  61. Barb says:

    Smash Ball!

  62. cmat0829 says:

    Question du jour:

When (if) does Pedro catch Neil Walker in batting average? Getting kinda close, which is amazing.

DK: Guys, come on … … separate yourselves from the newbies.

  63. Brandie says:

On point defense by Jordy Mercer!

  64. cmat0829 says:

They flashed a stat last night that basically for the past month (since May 25) Pedro is batting .298. I think we all know Pedro won’t be a .300 hitter essentially, but that is quietly a nice long stretch of .300 hitting for El Toro.

  65. Bizrow says:

    + 1

  66. Brandie says:

Who’s the guy with the bold print answers on this page? :-)

  67. cmat0829 says:

i think i need a remedial tip on how to create an avatar…..can anyone give me a pointer/

  68. cmat0829 says:

WOW! what a nice atbat and MEMORABLE first hit for Tony Sanchez!!

  69. Great hit Tony. See if you get that ball soon. Too bad it didn’t come off the wall, could have gotten an RBI to boot.

  70. Keith says:

    Woo-hoo! Double in first at-bat.

  71. JRay3 says:

A crew member from Angels staff just got a ladder to retrieve Sanchez double so he coul have it, classy move.

Welcome to the show Tony nice opening impression.

  72. Brandie says:

Go to and set up an account. Instructions are pretty simple.

  73. florida steeler says:

Why is McKenry on this team?? I know that a lot of you like “the Fort” but cmon–the guy hits 210 and can’t throw anyone out. It is time for Neal to bring up guys and let them play. Sanchez should be here working with Martin and catching once or twice a week. He is the future–not McKenry.

  74. Brandie says:

    Hulk Smash Ball!

  75. Reading says:

David Thompson could have jumped up and gotten the Sanchez ball.

  76. Steelag70 says:

Heard that NH said today that Cole may get sent down so they can keep 6 starters stretched, but not for Super 2 status…also that he doesn’t feel the best move would be to put Morton in the pen and keep Cole in the rotation….

  77. florida steeler says:

You are correct. I owned a basketball camp back in the day and David actually took a dollar bill off the top of the backboard for all the campers. He was an unbelievable athlete.

  78. Keith says:

No, the best move would be to activate Sanchez as a reliever again and leave the rotation alone, at least until AJ is back.

  79. florida steeler says:

Disagree but he is our “brilliant” GM.

  80. JohninOshkosh says:

    4. Image will appear in minutes.

You can download an Image or use one already on your computer.

So Easy, I can manage to do it.

  81. cmat0829 says:

I agree with those basic assumptions, in this order…they need to keep 6 viable starters (and with Gomez in the wings they may have 7)… Morton is not ideal bullpen candidate… the only other option would be to use Cole in the pen similar to how the Reds are using Cingrani, but that may not be best for development of Cole.

That said, if Cole keeps pitching well, really hard to see how you’d send him down….

Best thing about this is it should keep all Pirates starters on a short leash… you figure AJ and Wandy have to start… and Locke has been unbelievable… but if anyone falters for a start or two, then Cole back in there……

  82. Steelag70 says:

    Come on Charlie….

  83. cmat0829 says:

You must mean Gomez. That is going to happen, Gomez will start Wednesday in Seattle, most likely replacing Duke Welker on the roster.

I think NH is referring to WHEN AJ and Wandy return…the rotation would be AJ/Wandy/Liriano/Locke/Morton with Cole being the 6th guy. You can either use a 6-man rotation (doubtful with AJ/Wandy probably not liking the extra rest), move one of the starters to the bullpen (none profile as good bullpen types, except possibly for Cole), or send someone down to AAA.

  84. Steelag70 says:

Cole just seems to have that “IT” factor with not just the fans, but the clibhouse as well…can’t see how you can send him down and not make the other guys wonder…

  85. cmat0829 says:

thanks I did it, it isnt showing up yet, but i guess it will eventually.

  86. Steelag70 says:

    Freakin’ Morton….

  87. cmat0829 says:

I guess the other option, which I don’t think is really supportable, is to TRADE one of the starters for some offense at the deadline. You can never have too much pitching, and you are relaying on Locke (until now unproven), Liriano (injury comeback), Morton (TJ comeback), Cole ( rookie) and Gomez (not proven as ML starter yet)…. don’t favor that idea, but again, if you are of the belief that Cole needs to stay in the rotation, then who goes? I assume Morton? and where does he go?

  88. Keith says:

Yes – my bad – Gomez. He shouldn’t start; he should remain our long man, a role at which he excels. (Perhaps he gets some work today?)

  89. JohninOshkosh says:

    Well done. I see it!

  90. cmat0829 says:

Morton is getting a ton of ground balls, which is his game. Defense needs to be very clean behind him and it hasn’t been.

  91. JRay3 says:

Five run inning and barely a ball gets out the infield, unreal.

  92. cmat0829 says:

Pujols looks like he needs a designated runner. Painful to watch him at this point. Such a great player, but man, he must be fighting knee or back problems.

  93. Reading says:

Well, that was a good inning.

  94. cmat0829 says:

He is penciled in to start Wednesday in Seattle… I guess its POSSIBLE he goes today and Cole moves up to start in Seattle, but I doubt it. Welker can give you mop up innings and I think the Bucs want Cole to start in Pittburgh on Friday.

  95. Steelag70 says:

Time to get the bats going…especially against Blanton…

  96. cmat0829 says:

Blanton is not CyYoung, need an answer this inning, at least one run to get back at them.

  97. cmat0829 says:

Prediction, Pedro will be at AllStar week in CitiField… right now it will be in HR derby, but he has a chance to play his way onto the roster also.

  98. tdb1977 says:

Walker should have eatten the ground ball that was hit weakly to 2nd that he came charging in on. Pedro botched the play at 3rd. And Mercer was asleep on getting the ball picked up on the breaking up of the double play. Morton just had bad luck on his side that inning. Hopefully the bats will stay awake and can they can get back into this game today.

  99. 21sthebest says:

I think he has his contract in his back pocket.

  100. Steelag70 says:

Agreed….who is the captain for the NL HR Derby team?

  101. Keith says:

    Is this better, DK?

    DK: Much!

  102. 21sthebest says:

Way to go out on a limb! :-)

  103. Steelag70 says:

Come on GI Jones…it’s time for you to start hitting as well…

  104. cmat0829 says:

lol, i guess the point is 3 weeks ago there is no way he’d be in consideration.

  105. Steelag70 says:

Looks like poor defense is the flavor of the day today…haha.

  106. 21sthebest says:

    Good point.

  107. cmat0829 says:

The Angels look bad on defense, except for Mike Trout. Awful pitching, bad defense, poor team speed…they have earned their 32-42 record. Mike Scoscia won’t last the AllStar break

  108. cmat0829 says:

This is a BIG at bat for Gaby… just a single here and it’s 5-4…please dont swing for a HR Gaby.

  109. Keith says:

Walker trying to stay ahead of Pedro.

  110. Steelag70 says:

Why didn’t Jones score on that one???

  111. cmat0829 says:

Who wins in a footrace? Gaby or Pujols.

  112. Keith says:

That’s certainly a good scenario. I just don’t think Gomez should get comfortable in the rotation, y’know?

  113. Keith says:

Still Pujols. I think Spanky Lavalliere, TODAY, still beats Sanchez.

  114. Brandie says:

Chip away, baby chip away. Here they come!

  115. Steelag70 says:

    Nice recovery Charlie…

  116. Steelag70 says:

  117. cmat0829 says:

Exhibit A of the Angels are in sad shape… Brad Hawpe, yes that Brad Hawpe, is on the 25-man roster. And is Josh Hamilton hurt or just riding pine?

  118. Steelag70 says:

Hambone has a wrist injury, but is not on the DL….but probably should be riding the pine right now anyway….

  119. cmat0829 says:

Right Gomez for now, whomever is ready first AJ or Wandy pushes Gomez back to the pen.

  120. Reading says:

    I believe Hamilton is injured.

  121. florida steeler says:

I thought Gaby was shown in slow motion–yikes !!!!! They have to get to Blanton–he is awful but get McHenry the hell out of the lineup !!!!!

  122. cmat0829 says:

Hurt his wrist flailing and missing pitches ?

  123. florida steeler says:

Nice guys finish last–he has to go.

  124. cmat0829 says:

Fort, Barmes, Inge… nice guys, professional all… but better options are out there (possible exception of Barmes).

  125. cmat0829 says:

Just his 3rd start back from injury, but the eye test seems to indicate Charlie has good stuff to work with…more velocity on the fastball, sharper curves… he needs to TRUST his stuff and not fall behind hitters and walk people… with so much pitch to contact, you can’t afford walking people.

  126. Chuck H says:

Somebody, please get that home plate umpire a pair of glasses. I’m watching on
Gameday and he’s calling pitches in the middle of the box, balls against Morton. Bring
on the home plate camera and do away with the home plate ump. GO, BUCS!!!

  127. Just brutal fielding today.

Oh well, didn’t expect to sweep the Angels anyway.

  128. Reading says:

Announcers say Heredia with the Power is a lefty. Thought he was a righty.

  129. Thundercrack says:

Part of “The Plan” They made him switch

  130. cmat0829 says:

Not real thrilled with the at bats and approaches the past 3 innings on Blanton… they are swinging at ‘his ‘pitches… the offspeed, off the plate junk…. let’s hope the 7th inning is a charm again today…..

  131. cmat0829 says:

which announcers? I didnt hear Neverett/Wehner say that, but wasn’t listening real closely.

  132. Thundercrack says:

By the way Reading, not sure if you heard the GM’s radio show today , but he said that Cole did only have one pitch during his second start.

I think it was you that brought that up the other day. ( and got the finger wag )

  133. Reading says:

  134. Reading says:

I did actually listen to the GM show today (the first time ever). I did bring that up the other day as a snarky retort to comments throughout the week discussing how he overuses his fastball. Friday night he seemed to use a few more pitches. If I threw 101, I may overuse the fastball also. NH says Super 2 has nothing to do with Cole maybe going back at some point. Okay. Controversy averted.

  135. cmat0829 says:

Not a “clean” outing for Charlie, but a very good effort to get into the 6th inning and save innings on the bullpen. Defense could have been cleaner and the WALKS killed him…. a lot to build on and really could have given up 3 runs or so vs. 6.

  136. 21sthebest says:

73% were fastballs Friday night. 80% in each of his previous 2 starts.

  137. Reading says:

I think Blanton has suddenly morphed into Cy Young.

  138. Thundercrack says:

This is the start for Blanton that turns his season around …on his way to the Cy Young

  139. Bizrow says:

Here comes an 8 run 8th

  140. JRay3 says:

Getting to see two Major League debut’s today as there is a Duke Welker sighting on the mound.

Well ine good thing, team especially pen should be fully rested when they resume Tuesday in Seattle.

  141. Bizrow says:

    Maybe not

  142. JRay3 says:

Just realized the Angels have their six runs on just four hits today. That is not an everyday line.

  143. DJ says:

I think Hurdle has been doing a fantastic job, with my only slight complaint being his tendency of wanting to tinker too much with what is working (a la Bylsma). I understand giving Martin the day off after last evening’s game but I am not enamored with his fiddling too much with the everyday players, meaning those who play regardless of lefty or righty pitching. These guys are in great shape and should be able to handle the load. I don’t have the numbers but seems that McCutchen has been given at least 3 days off this year. Would be interested in seeing their record when he’s out of the line-up.

That said, given that he sat today, hope McCutchen was watching video of himself this year versus last. Last year was his first in the majors where he truly made a concerted effort to hit the ball where it was pitched — taking the outside pitch to right center and right with authority — and we all saw the results on his average and homers. He is back to trying to pull the ball too much this year (way too many ground balls to third base) and his numbers tell the tale, including his RBI. He is a much more dangerous hitter when he is stroking the ball from center to the right side.

  144. Reading says:

    Nice job by Welker.

  145. Bizrow says:

    Here is a start

    Good AB, PRNW

  146. DJ says:

And what did I just say about too many grounders by McCutchen to third base?

He swings and misses at a belt high 96 mph pitch and falls one leg over the other because he was trying to pull it . . . terrible sequence by him.

Although Jay Bell wasn’t here last year, he (and Hurdle) need a chat with him, and they should bring the videos.

  147. JRay3 says:

Thought Martin had it…come on Marte!

  148. JohninOshkosh says:

    Cmon Starlin!

  149. tdb1977 says:

    Oh. My. Godness! Tied game!!!

  150. Reading says:

  151. JohninOshkosh says:

    Hell yeah!!!

This game may define the season!

  152. Drew71 says:

Nice time to check back in.

  153. JRay3 says:

    MAGICAL…the battlin’ Buccos!

  154. Brandie says:

Way to come back, gang! The fat lady went home!

  155. Reading says:

Hamilton, Trout, and Pujols. No problem.

  156. Drew71 says:

    Interesting pitching selection

  157. tdb1977 says:

Whole new ball game! Let’s sit them down so Pedro can come in and go all lights out on the Angels!

  158. Karen22 says:

WOW!! Great comeback after an out-of-character Bad News Bears kinda game! Now, let’s DO IT!!

  159. JohninOshkosh says:

Hope all the Pirate fans arn’t sitting in their cars on the 57. lol.

    What a ballgame!

  160. Reading says:

    Flyball? Anyone? Anyone?

  161. tdb1977 says:

Come on Gaby, just place it like Marte did last inning and that will bring in Pedro.

  162. Steelag70 says:

    Come on Snider……

  163. Steelag70 says:

Jepsen is pulling a Rick Vaughn!!

  165. Reading says:

    Nice!! Tack on an E-7!!

  166. Dave G says:

    Travis Snyder: UN-believable

  167. Steelag70 says:

Snider may not be what they had hoped, but I will give him credit…he seems to come up with clutch hits….

  168. Dave G says:

    (Yes, it’s Snider.)

  169. Thundercrack says:

I actually feel a little sorry for Mike Scoscia.

I don’t care what their payroll is , the Angels are a very poor team on defense. Awful fundementals.

  170. JRay3 says:

Lunchbox!!!! Clear the bases Travis Snider, the never say die Pirates. What a game! My wife keeps reminding me we have flight to catch glad the team is obliging.

  171. tdb1977 says:

This is incredible! I cannot believe this.

  172. Lad9 says:

Hey Brandie girl. Back in after a trip to west va for my sons game and look at this! What a comeback!!!

  173. Drew71 says:

    Holy Crap.

    As Radio posted hours ago…

If they win, the Pirates are the Dreaded 16 Games Over Five Hundred.

  174. tdb1977 says:

Hey Biz – that bet you made on the 11 or more line doesnt sound so crazy now, does it?

  175. Lad9 says:

  176. Thundercrack says:

Over .500 and below the belt. We’ve had it all today!

  177. Dom says:

    Go Buccos!

  178. Brandie says:

Good to talk to yinz! Great to see how much fight this team has. I wish they could play all night.

  179. You are the main piece. Don’t leave there.

  180. tdb1977 says:

Thats 7 runs in the last 2 innings. Cutch and Martin are now 4 for 4 since coming in, in the 9th inning.

  181. Karen22 says:

WOOHOO!! I LOST the line today! I’m happy!!

  182. JohninOshkosh says:

JRay: Can you follow the Bucs to Seattle ? :)

  183. Dom says:

    Don’t speak so soon…

  184. tdb1977 says:

    +many many many

  185. Lad9 says:

Same here. I am with about 30 people at a party and the atmosphere is electric. Having a ball!

  186. JohninOshkosh says:

  187. Lad9 says:

The Angels left fielder really schucks!

  188. Naje says:

Wondering what is unsustainable about this type of game and this type of series sweep. Maybe the sloppy defense will be the reason for another epic fail. Or Melancon’s and Grilli’s arms will fall off. Or maybe Russell Martin will start playing like Matt Morris at some time during the season.

  189. Drew71 says:

I used to think you’re as mean as a snake.

    Now I know it.

    So you’re not all bad.

  190. Steelag70 says:

    Why the negativity??

  191. This could be the nail in a fine career for Scocia. At least with the Angels.

  192. Naje says:

Hardly negative… all tongue in cheek.

  193. Steelag70 says:

    Come on Chilli!!

  194. Brandie says:

Awesome. Sounds like you had great day. Glad you got to be with your son!

  195. tdb1977 says:

WTF Grilli! The winning run is at the plate now.

  196. JohninOshkosh says:

    Close. Them. Out. Now.

    Getting nervous here.

  197. Jandy says:

    Yes please do!

  198. tdb1977 says:

Nevermind on the winning run at the plate. Thought I saw it say 10-8

  199. Reading says:

No need to make this interesting. Come on now.

  200. Steelag70 says:

    C’mon Grilli…one more…

  201. Brandie says:

Why, it’s Ms. J, the blogs regular convenience nun.

  202. Steelag70 says:

    Damn Grilli….come on!

  203. Drew71 says:

  205. Reading says:

  207. Jandy says:

Lol thanks I think. Had to pop in. At Walmart and hubby was texting me updates. The Buccos are something else

  208. Steelag70 says:

  209. Keith says:

Unbelievable. But we’ll all forget about it after ONE MORE OUT!!

  210. Drew71 says:

Dejan must have guaranteed the win

  211. Brandie says:

They need to change the blog heading. Can’t count the chickens before they hatch.

  212. Drew71 says:

At least he’s facing an easy out

  213. Dom says:

    Buccos Win!!!

    Buccos Win!!!

    Buccos Win!!!

I never lost faith in them!

  214. JohninOshkosh says:

You guys raise it while I take my blood pressure medication.

  215. Drew71 says:

  216. Keith says:

  217. Reading says:

    Good. Enjoyable afternoon!

  218. Steelag70 says:

What a game!! This one of those other 54 games….

  219. Lad9 says:

Wow. What a great win. But I can’t take another one like that. Raise it!

  220. Jandy says:

    Raise it Baby!

  221. Brandie says:

Good. They needed the good vibes to close it out.

  222. Brandie says:

You know it. When there is no way, you make a/way.

  223. Brandie says:

    Raise it high.

  224. JRay3 says:

Behind seven runs in the 9th and 10th innings the Bucs hold on to earn the sweep beating the Angels 10-9 in 10 and there was noooooo doubt about it.

With the win the Bucs are now a season best 16 above .500 at 46-30 and 5-2 on the nine game road trip. After the off day the Bucs begin a two game set in SeattleTuesday night with Jeff Locke taking the hill.

    Let’s Go Bucs!

Whew, a memorable one for sure!

  225. Jandy says:

Ok. Now to finish my grocery shopping! :)

  226. Dom says:

Youre right. I’m more responsible for the sweep than anyone else is. Including Pedro.

  227. Reading says:

Started pacing in the 10th. Normally reserve that for football.

  228. JohninOshkosh says:

Great job posting all weekend. Thanks much.

  229. Reading says:

This would have been a really bad L had it been an L. But, it wasn’t.

  230. JRay3 says:

    Too funny.

  231. JRay3 says:

    Thanks @JohninOshKosh

  232. Jim S. says:

So, apparently Grilli is due for some regression after all. He picked a great day to have a bad outing. All we needed was for him to get that last out with the lead intact, and he did.

Ground Chuck had a rough outing. Didn’t get any help on defense, and could not consistently find the plate. He’s still getting in spring training mode.

Pedro crushes another HR and another 2b that one hops the wall. He’s locked in.

Walker had a bad error, but some really good at bats today.

Snider with a very nice clutch hit. I think he picked a good night to host a party at his house, since he was a hitting star late.

Marte Partay with a very clutch hit, and great job of taking the extra base.

Russell Martin has a knack for the key hit. Or, two.

I said at the outset of this trip that we needed a split in Cincinnati to go 5-4. Well, we got our split in Cincy and it was almost 3/4 there. But, I was thinking 2/3 in Anaheim, and we just took all 3. No reason not to get a split, at minimum, in Seattle to go 6-3 on the trip. I’d say Seattle is ripe for the 2-game sweep, but King Felix will be one of our opponents. That’s the ’13 Bucs: we face all aces!

46-30 feels awfully good. This is a legitimately good team. I’d like to see some additions made around the edges at the deadline, but no major trades as of now.

    Enjoy, everybody!

  233. Lad9 says:

YEAH!!! Da broom is out. And SWEEP should be The Final Word!

  234. Brandie says:

  235. Brandie says:

Thank you. I am absolutely enjoying this!

  236. twentytwo22 says:

It was Memorial Day all over again!

This game looked like one of those quintessential getaway day half-assed efforts we’ve seen too many times over the years but then it morphed into one of the best wins I can remember. There were some great at-bats there in the last two innings. Just awesome.

You know how good the Pirates bullpen is? They were hesitant to use a guy who is 6’7 and throws 98.

  237. 17 games left before the All-Star Break.

14 are against sub-.500 teams (@SEA, MIL, PHI, @CHC, NYM).

3 are against Oakland at home, where the Pirates are 25-13 (.657).

The Pirates’ combined record against those NL teams is 18-9 (.667). So far the Bucs are 9-3 (.750) against AL teams. They split with the Mariners the last time they met.

Assuming those trends continue, I think it’s reasonable to expect the Pirates to win 8 of those NL games (8-4) and 2 of the AL games (2-3). That’s 10-7 for a 56-37 record going into the All-Star Break. Not too shabby at all.

Again, I think that should be the “line in the sand” for this upcoming set of games. That’s assuming a split with Seattle again and going 1-2 with the A’s when you could just as easily expect to go 3-2 in those games, maybe better.

However, 19 games over .500 with 69 games to go is sitting pretty. I’d be very happy with that.

  238. Jim S. says:

    great post.

  239. Jim S. says:

Sounds very do-able for this team, Clarence.

  240. Thundercrack says:

Does anyone know how hard Heredia was throwing today for West Virginia?

Oh, and nice win for the Bucs

  241. Jim S. says:

Didn’t hear, Thunder. But, I assume he reached close to 95.

  242. Thundercrack says:

Just watched the video replay of Snider’s hit that got by the left fielder.

When Walker scores he turns and motions for Gaby Sanchez to slide into home. But he doesn’t do it very emphatically…and Sanchez came across standing. I couldn’t tell how close the throw really was, but a better throw might have gotten him – especially since he didn’t slide.

    That was a big run

  243. If we would have blown this game, it would have been on the boss. He posted the 10-6 final before the bottom the inning.

This team is even good enough to overcome DK’s predicting genius.

  244. Thundercrack says:

I see my earlier post regarding the Riverhounds was deleted.

    DK: Good. Thanks.

  245. Jim, did you see Tony the Tiger? And how many times has someone asked you that?

Or do people who live closer to there not think about Battle Creek in that aspect? (serious Q)

  246. Milo Hamilton says:

What do you think ? Mike Scioscia fired after that performance ?

  247. You’re the one that gets the scoops. Got one?

He does seem to be in a lull. Too many guys underperforming and hurt.

  248. Daquido_Bazzini says:

    Brought back a win!

It was like the old days….A late comeback win with A LOT of Pittsburgh fans there.

    Great, great game……

  249. tdb1977 says:

    @MLB @AllStarGame @MattHarvey33 @ClaytonKersh22. @Jeff_Locke hands down! If you don’t think so STFD!

  251. Milo Hamilton says:

No scoop. Talking with a friend yesterday morning I said that if the Angels get swept by the Pirates at home that could be the last straw. DiPoto has been looking for a reason to pull the trigger and the way today went down may be it.

  252. Thundercrack says:

No matter if you pay them $20 or $20 million per year, Puljos and Hamilton look old and brittle. Nothing for CJ Wilson either. And those moves point to the owner.

  253. Milo Hamilton says:

You would think Artie would have learned from Gene Autry that you can’t buy a pennant.

  254. Bizrow says:

I did not see any of the cereal stuff. We actually stayed in a town about 10 miles away and drove back/forth for the games. I think the cereal factories are very much top of mind there. It is definitely what they are known for, and people said that if you are near them on a work day you can sometimes smell it. I suppose it depends whether you like the cereal they are making as to whether you enjoy the smell.
