  1. Tons of movement expected today

… recent talk has Canes moving #5 overall for a top 4 defenseman and lower #1 pick.

    • Would love to know, if Pens could offer Niskanen and Pouliot for #5 overall and Victor Rask, could that get a deal done with Carolina.

As you can see below at #5, I have Nichushkin listed. A big power forward that plays LW and style very similar to Malkin… Russian or not, he’s a guy you can’t pass up if you have that 5th pick.

Canes have need for D though.

  2. My top 10 Mock Draft…

    1 Colorado Avalanche – Nathan MacKinnon, C
    2 Florida Panthers – Seth Jones, D
3 Tampa Bay Lightning – Jonathan Drouin, LW
    4 Nashville Predators – Aleksander Barkov, C
5 Carolina Hurricanes – Valery Nichushkin, LW
    6 Calgary Flames – Sean Monahan, C
    7 Edmonton Oilers – Darnell Nurse, D
    8 Buffalo Sabres – Elias Lindholm, C
9 New Jersey Devils – Zachary Fucale, G
    10 Dallas Stars – Bo Horvat, C

  3. Look for potential trades as Pens need to get some draft picks and talent into the system at forward. I expect guys like Niskanen, Kennedy, Glass, and Jeffrey to be available. Maybe even a surprise with Sutter as they have Jokinen to take the 3rd line role but the return for Sutter would have to be legit NHL-ready value.

  4. Columbus has 3 first round picks today and now there’s talk that contract negotiations between Sergei Bobrovsky and Blue Jackets have broken down as the goalie wants over $6 million per season.

Rumors have the goalie on the trade block now… Jackets would be taking a huge gamble to sign a goalie based off of a 48-game season, Vezina Trophy or not.

    • Eric, I’m not a Pens fan, but I talked some with some friends at length about what they would have gotten for Letang. What teams do you think would have been good matchups? I think Edmonton would have been perfect talent-wise, but being how they have difficulty signing players long-term, they’d have to be 100% sure Letang would sign there. Not sure about that. Toronto would certainly have been #1 to me.

      • Edmonton could have offered the 7th overall pick, a defenseman like veteran Ladislav Smid or top end prospect like Oscar Klefbom, and then a NHL forward. The key would have been, just who from their group would have been included.

Oilers have a real nice group with Jordan Eberle, Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Nail Yakupov, Sam Gagner, and Magnus Paajarvi.

Toronto would have had to offer their number one pick and James Van Riemsdyk as a conversation starter, then maybe a young defenseman like Morgan Reilly or Jake Gardiner.

        • I was kind of thinking about Toronto after the Bernier deal that Reimer would have been on the block, and they could have traded Letang for a package built around Reimer and Gardiner. Of course, a deal like that means you buy out Fleury, which I think would have been a good idea as you go with a time-share of Vokoun and Reimer for the coming year. As a non-Pens fan, I really don’t think much of Fleury at all.

          • The amount of hate/dislike for Fleury is understandable with his last four playoff performances but I would never make a move to buy him out or trade him, just to get James Reimer.

One move that I thought could have been a possibility was dealing Fleury to Colorado for the number one overall pick and goaltender Semyon Varlamov.

This season is probably the last for Fleury in Pittsburgh if he fails to perform in the playoffs.

            • Colorado giving us the number 1 overall and a live body for Fleury? Are you out of your mind?

            • Yeah, no way thats happening; thats like trying to get Giancarlo Stanton for Phil Irwin. The rest of the league has noticed that Fleury has been melting down in the playoffs for year as well.
You don’t buy Fleury out just to get Reimer. Its a move to save a good 4 million of cap space. Given the makeup of their team, its similar to the Wings of the years prior to Jimmy Howard. They went cheap in goal because their stars were forwards and the blueline.

  5. Look for Penguins to deal right-winger Tyler Kennedy

Rumors that San Jose is interested… Pens could get back their 2nd round pick (49th overall).

  6. Tyler Kennedy traded to San Jose for 2013 second round pick (50th overall).

Good luck TK in San Jose.

    • Eric… You think this opens up space for a Dupuis return? Hard to imagine the team losing Cooke, Kennedy and Dupuis with only Bennett showing the ability to fill a top 9 spot.

      • I think Dupuis is looking for 3-4 year deal at $4 per and that’s not happening with the Penguins, so he’ll go shopping for a deal and then I’m sure will try to give one last try to get a deal done.

Trading Kennedy should open up 3rd line options for Shero to make adjustments to that line.

I think Pens could go after Minnesota’s Cal Clutterbuck.

        • Interesting you brought up Clutterbuck; I was just looking at him. I can’t see the Pens coming out of this weekend without a veteran wing.

        • If Dupuis is gone; who do you see in the top 2 lines?

Bennett go to the top line or stay on a second line? Joikenen jump to the top 2 lines?

          • until they get someone to bump Jokinen back to third line, yeah.

No idea who they are looking at acquiring for that top 2 line role. Bennett 1st RW or 2nd LW is fine by me.

            • As long as the cap gets over 67M next year (5% raise), the Pens will have no problem with a 3.5 cap hit for 9 AND a 7.25 cap hit for 58 assuming the following:

              - 16 doesnt play into more than 2.5 a year
              - 48 is replaced at or below 2m
              - 44 is replaced at 2.75 or below (or resigns)
              - 47 signs 2nd year for 1.5 or under

the rest of the guys we need to get under contract in 14 (we only have 6 guys right now signed that year not including 58) are going to be entry level defensemen or players making what 27 and 46 make today.

            • That statement on 47 should read second contract. Pens also have compliance buyouts that could be used if there was cap trouble.

  7. Shocker…

    Avs select Nathan MacKinnon, C

  8. In a real surprise, Florida bypasses Seth Jones and drafts Aleksander Barkov

    I really like Barkov.

  9. Lightning draft Jonathan Drouin, LW

  10. Predators need offense but no way did they imagine Seth Jones at #4…. great pick!

  11. Hurricanes – Elias Lindholm, C

  12. No surprise, Flames get Sean Monahan, C

  13. Any chance Iginla comes back?

  14. Forget Cal Clutterbuck

Isles GM Garth Snow traded Nino Niederreiter to Minnesota for Clutterbuck.

Very good deal for both teams.

  15. Oilers draft defenseman Darnell Nurse

  16. There’s a player outside of my top 10 Mock draft

Sabres select Finnish D Rasmus Ristolainen

  17. WOW. Schneider to the Devils.

  18. WOW

Vancouver trades goalie Corey Schneider to New Jersey for the 9th overall pick.

  19. Idiot from the NHL network saying its hard to remember a host team making a splash like this; this early in the draft. Staal trade wasn’t a big one last year?

  20. Vancouver selects forward Bo Horvat

  21. Stars pick Valery Nichushkin…

Just unreal a player of his talent went 10th…

  22. Flyers get big defenseman Samuel Morin

  23. Coyotes select forward Max Domi (son of Tie Domi), not like his dad, he’s a skilled forward.

  24. NY Post’s Larry Brooks is reporting Ulf Samuelsson will be assistant coach with the Rangers.

  25. Calgary uses Pens 1st rd pick (28th) to draft LW Morgan Klimchuk.

  26. Absolutely outstanding value for Montreal to get Zach Fucale (goalie) in the 2nd round. He’s a franchise goalie talent… cannot believe he went this long.

  27. Pens trade picks 50 and 89 for pick 44

    …select goalie Tristan Jarry

  28. Chicago traded forward Michael Frolik to Winnipeg for two draft picks.
