Pittsburgh sports talk with the Trib columnist

Morning Java: No name games here

By Dejan Kovacevic | Trib Total Media

Morning, Lunatics …

>> The Wednesday column advises strong caution toward the Pirates making any major moves at the trading deadline. Far more important than that, the athletes concur.

I predict it won’t take longer than noon, though, before I’m utterly despondent over the number of people reading the column in the context of, as Rob Biertempfel reports, the first loss in 10 games.

Don’t laugh. More than a few will do that.

You’ll also have more than a few who see that it’s about trades, then scan the thing looking for possible names that might be coming, then click away or turn the page.

Don’t laugh. Very much part of the sporting culture. We’re obsessed with trade information, no matter how vapid, no matter the history of a given author or outlet being inaccurate. One sad fact of our business is that, if you want a zillion hits on your file, throw out a name or two or 10. Guaranteed hyper-boost.

Anyway, here’s some of what the manager had to say after the game last night …

>> This was yesterday’s TribLIVE Radio show podcast featuring special guest Jordy Mercer, and below was the video of my midseason awards for the Pirates …

>> Huge day for the Penguins, as it turned out.

First, the Kris Letang deal was done, as expected. Then, at 11:46 p.m., perhaps to avoid ever having someone accuse them of breaking good news at a decent hour of the day, a Pascal Dupuis deal was done, as no one could have reasonably expected, for four years and $15 million. Rob Rossi reports.

If you’re scoring at rinkside, that’s $44 million committed to just nine players for next season, with a cap of $64 million. Per the completely awesome site the team has $4,126,667 left to spend. (That’s accounting for all the guys signed, not just those nine making the $44 million.)

There are serious concerns about this team’s lack of emphasis on youth, as the Monday column laid out, specifically the lack of forwards coming up through the system. That must change.

But in the interim, having the top two lines under wraps is better than not.

>> Oh, the headline opportunities with Big Ben visiting Big Ben, as actually happened yesterday in London. At any rate, sure looks like quite the photo op.

Should be a blast when the real thing happens.

>> Speaking of quarterbacks going abroad, Tino Sunseri has taken the noon balloon to Saskatoon. (Well, actually, the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders are based in Regina, but go with it.) Jerry DiPaola reports.

>> Taking the day off. Back at the ballpark on the Fourth, column on Friday.
